You probably have heard by now that DC has killed DC Zoom, DC Ink and Vertigo imprints to consolidate publishing and replace imprints with separate age categories - DC Young Adult and DC Middle Grade being apparently just name changes for Ink and Zoom respectively, with Black Label remaining as their adult-oriented line and DC Universe being the main line still.

Some of things it means:

NO BOOK IS BEING CANCELLED

All Sandman Universe titles will continue under DC Black Label line. The Dreaming, House of Whispers, Books of Magic and Lucifer will keep going, just not under Vertigo label.

Creator-owned titles will be assigned to specific age groups but will also continue.

DC ink and Zoom books that have already been solicited will be published, other titles have been restructured to specific age group.

DC Middle Grade will still publishBatman: Overdrive, Batman Tales: Once Upon a Crime, Diana: Princess of the Amazins and Green Lantern: Legacy in 2020 and will publish Superman Smashes the Klan in future

Now, another matter entirely is what it means for Vertigo books. Black Label is a good initiative even if so far it has produced BatPenis and Republican Superman. However, the line was advertised as “ biggest creators and biggest characters” for adult-oriented stories. This is not what Vertigo was. Vertigo was always a publisher who was not afraid of taking risks and pushing the envelope, it changed comics in ways we still feel and changed them for the better. Books like Sandman, Hellblazer, Lucifer, Transmetropolitan, Fables, Shade the Changing Man are among the greatest titles of American comics and left a huge mark on the millions of fans and creators. Black Label is right now criticized for being too Batman-centric for its own good.

It is an end of an era but not one we didn’t see coming. The writing was on the wall since DC fired Karen Beger and took classic Vertigo characters like John Constantine and Swamp Thing and forced them back into the main DC line as a part of New 52. Vertigo never recovered from that hit. Ironically I suspect now Young Animal books will fall under Black Label. Including Doom Patrol, one of titles DC took away from Vertigo in the first place.

New titles and new details on upcoming titles from DC's Young Adult and Middle Grade

The offerings were revealed at the American Library Association (ALA)'s annual convention. During the "Book Buzz" panel Saturday in Washington, D.C., the publisher outlined their 2020-2021 releases for these two age groups.

DC has stressed that these are standalone stories, and not part of "DC's ongoing comic book continuity".

DC Announces YA/MG imprints DC Ink & DC Zoom

DC Ink: For Young Adult readers  

DC Zoom: For Middle Grade Readers

DC Entertainment revealed two new original graphic novel publishing imprints today, DC Ink focused on young adult (YA) readers, and DC Zoom focused on middle grade (MG) readers. Both imprints will feature a world class line-up of authors who have established YA and MG fan bases. These authors will bring their storytelling expertise to a DC Universe filled with iconic characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and many more. The first titles from DC Ink and DC Zoom will be released in Fall 2018.

“Superheroes are more popular than ever so it only makes sense to bring these DC characters to an entirely new generation of young readers,” stated Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment and president of Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “The first comic books created decades ago were for kids, and as the business evolved and matured, it became more focused on adult readers. DC Ink and DC Zoom present an exciting new opportunity to grow our publishing business and ensure beloved stories built around iconic characters like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are endeared as part of the fabric of childhood for years to come.”

The first titles from DC Ink include HARLEY QUINN: BREAKING GLASS by Mariko Tamaki (SUPERGIRL: BEING SUPER) with art by Steve Pugh, and MERA by Danielle Paige (DOROTHY MUST DIE series). The first title to hit shelves from DC Zoom will be DC SUPER HERO GIRLS: SEARCH FOR ATLANTIS from writer Shea Fontana and artist Yancey Labat. All three titles will go on sale in Fall 2018, with many more titles from DC Ink and DC Zoom set to follow in 2019.

First Looks at On-Sale Dates, Synopses, and Covers for Spring 2020 Titles Revealed

During today’s Book Buzz panel at the American Library Association’s (ALA) annual convention in Washington D.C., DC announced plans to expand its Books for Young Readers program with an extensive new graphic novel slate geared toward young adults and middle grade readers. The new titles revealed today are scheduled to debut from 2020 through 2021 and feature stories starring Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and more of DC’s most iconic characters, written and illustrated by some of the biggest names in the young adult (YA) and middle grade publishing space.

As standalone stories, DC’s YA and middle grade graphic novels are not part of DC’s ongoing comic book continuity and completely accessible to new fans. DC’s YA titles feature thought-provoking stories for readers ages 13 and up that focus on everyday aspirations, struggles, and triumphs. DC’s middle grade graphic novels are geared toward readers ages 8-12 and tell stories focused on friends, family, and growing up.

DC also announced on-sale dates and gave panel attendees a first look at covers and synopses for several middle grade and YA titles debuting in spring 2020. 30) When they filmed the big fire scenes for the Season 2 premiere and the post-Super Bowl episode, they filmed for three nights, an hour and a half outside of L.A. They used a fake name for the series on signs so crew members could find the set but no fans would.

31) The cast has known about the fire and how Jack died for a year and a half now. The code word for talking about it amongst the cast was “The Marble.”

32) Metz barely had enough money to pay for gas to get her to the audition for Kate. When she officially booked the role, she only had 81 cents left in her bank account.

33) And finally, Metz has an email from Fogelman’s producing partner framed on her wall at home. It reads, “Just curious, who got [the part of] Kate?” It stands as a reminder of a moment that changed her life dramatically.

Easton, who remains the only artist in history to have top five records on five major Billboard charts, will perform the iconic role of ‘Dorothy Brock’ in this new production of 42nd Street, the dazzling and romantic homage to the world of musical theatre.

The role of ‘Julian Marsh’ will be performed by Tom Lister, who played ‘Carl King’ in Emmerdale for 8 years and has recently been starring as ‘Wild Bill Hickok’ in the UK Tour of Calamity Jane. Clare Halse, hho most recently appeared in the acclaimed production of Gypsy as ‘Marjorie May’ at the Savoy Theatre, will play ‘Peggy Sawyer’.

42nd Street is at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane from Monday 20th March 2017, with a press night on Tuesday 4th April 2017 at 7:00pm. The production will be directed by the show’s co-author Mark Bramble (whose other hit shows include Barnum, Treasure Island, The Three Musketeers The Grand Tour) and director of many award-winning previous productions of 42nd Street on Broadway and around the world.
