Notes: A commission for @powertaco to write a Deaths WhiteRose AU. Hope other people enjoy it as much as they do!
Fic:
The capital city of Atlas was a hive of activity as the birthday celebration for the King’s youngest daughter was in full swing and all were excitedly enjoying the festivities. All except for the youngest daughter whose celebration this was in honor of. She sat in the shade of a tent near the front of the tournament grounds watching as the servants set up for the main draw of the day.
Weiss leaned into her hand, letting out a heavy sigh. “Is something wrong, Your Highness?” Klein spoke as he poured tea from a porcelain pot into a matching cup. “Are you not enjoying your birthday celebration?”
“Did anyone even think to ask me if this was something I wanted?” Weiss grumbled as she took the tea, bringing it to her lips she took a deep breath of the black tea before taking a small sip. “Did anyone think to ask if this was how I wanted my 21st birthday to be celebrated?”
Klein was silent nodding as he returned to standing at attention. “Well,” He spoke slowly. “Perhaps you can try and find something to enjoy? Even just something small maybe?” The butler smiled, eyes crinkling with the action.
“Maybe.” Weiss sighed as she set her cup back on the table, watching as the servant continued to put up the tournament brackets. Standing up she moved to look at the finalized brackets. A lot of men had signed up. Of course, they had. After all, this was a chance to show off and earn a favor from the King and Queen. It didn’t make Weiss feel any better about what she was being forced to endure. Not much to enjoy when her birthday was being used as a way to try and find a suitor.
As Weiss dragged her eyes over the names, two suddenly jumped out at her because they were women's names. Ruby and Maria. Maybe this would be a little less of a sausage fest than she originally thought. ‘Interesting. This will be…interesting.’ She thought as she returned to the shade of the tent, collapsing back into the wooden seat. She reached for her tea, watching as people moved back and forth past the opening, putting the finishing touches on the tournament grounds. Erecting the stands where spectators would sit observing the combatants and a stage where the announcements would be made.
Speaking of announcements, as the preparations finished the announcer climbed on the stage and spoke into a cone, voice echoing through the grounds. “Will all combatants please make their way to the tournament grounds!”
“Shall we?” Klein spoke leaning forward, smiling brightly.

Pondering the current fates of RWBY Heroes
Inspired by a RWBY discord I'm part of, we're here to speculate on the fates of various RWBY characters! Spoilers for RWBY up until Volume 9 and related material like the novels, under the readmore.
Teams/Kids/Young Adults:
Team RWBY: Alive, obviously. The show wouldn't be the show without them! On their way to Vacuo.
Team JNPR/JNOR: Pyrrha's dead (RIP), everyone else is alive with Jaune en route to Vacuo alongside Team RWBY.
Team CVFY: Still active per After the Fall and Before the Dawn (Recommended reading. Seriously.)
Team SSSN: Still active in Vacuo per Before the Dawn.
Team CDRL: Nobody cares about them. But if we must. Their last known status was during the Fall of Beacon, Cardin was saved by Ironwood from being killed but beyond that nothing. Frankly, don't care to think about them either.
Team FNKI: According to the writers, they lived through the Fall of Atlas. Currently in Vacuo.
Illia Amitola: Cameoed in Volume 8, probably in Vacuo by now alongside the Belladonnas.
Emerald Sustrai: Defected to the Good side in Volume 8, finally. In Vacuo with the others.
Oscar Pine: Still with the others in Vacuo.
Penny Polendina: Physically deceased, again. Fate unknown and uncertain. Possibility of return not discounted, given she's been revived before. Whether reduced to a soul inside of Winter, or permanently dead, until the official word is given, nothing is impossible for everyone's favorite redhead.
Ciel Soliel: An unknown to the point where the Curious Cat even lampshades it during Volume 9. As Penny's team was disbanded, and her fate is uncertain, we can guess she might've survived the Fall of Atlas and is in Vacuo. Up in the air currently.
!
Adults:
Ozpin: Spirit form in Oscar Pine's head, currently merging with him.
Ironwood (counting him here, he started as one): Dead via Atlas' fall in Volume 8.
Winter Schnee: Active, new Winter Maiden. Yes, the jokes still work.
Schnee Family (Whitley, Willow, Klien): Still alive, in Vacuo.
Glynda Goodwitch: Last time we saw her was After the Fall, and as a shocked cameo circa Volume 8 when Ruby's message reached the world. She was there in illusion form in the JLA/RWBY movie. She may still be in Vale, or may be on the way to Vacuo.
Qrow Branwen: Made it to Vacuo, if the V9 epilogue animatic shown off at RTX 2023 is to be believed. Otherwise, last seen on screen during the Fall of Atlas in Volume 8.
Raven Branwen: Revealed via the Volume 9 epilogue animatic to have helped Team RWBY onward to Vacuo. Unsure as to when THAT happened.
Taiyang Xiao Long: Uncertain if in Vacuo, still in Vale, or on his way. Chances are, probably in or around Vacuo if Raven's there.
Robyn Hill + The Happy Huntresses: Absolutely in Vacuo, if the Volume 9 epilogue animatic is to be believed. Expecting them to help with the refugees too.
Pietro Polendina: Still alive as of Volume 8. Since Amity Arena was shown with the ships in Volume 9, it's assumed he's alive.
Maria Calavera: Presumed still alive as well, same with Pietro.
Ghira and Kali Belladonna: Alive, saw Ruby's message. Current status places them in Mistral helping the Faunus circa Volume 6, though as of V8 they got Ruby's message. Unknown as of now if they went to Atlas first, or Vacuo. Expecting to see them in some capacity.
Theodore: Still headmaster of Shade academy. Active as of Before the Dawn. Will arguably be the most helpful headmaster the heroes have had.
Rumpole: Still vice head of Shade. Active as of Before the Dawn.
Old Man Shopkeep: WILL. NEVER. DIE. But seriously. In Vale as of Volume 8 cameo. Will probably help with food or cameo sometime!
Zwei: Will also never die. With Tai as of Volume 8.
Summer Rose: Condition unknown. Subject still needs to be broached if really dead, or Grimmified.

More Objectively Correct Shipping Opinions: RWBY+ Edition
Members of Team RWBY plus someone else
Ruby
Nuts & Dolts: honestly, the Ruby ship with the most basis in canon. WhiteRose has had a lot of time to cook and hasn't much, whereas every minute these two share seems like it's loaded with affection. I honestly thought it was just too wholesome to be interesting until I heard Taylor McKnee's confession monologue, and the line "I adore you so" broke me.
(as an aside, Frosen Steel combines many of the strengths of Nuts & Dolts and WhiteRose... although I wish it was called Frosted Cinnamon Rolls instead)
Milk & Cereal: in an AU where Yang isn't part of Ruby's life, Pyrrha could easily fill the roll, *and* be shippable. I did a smut oneshot of it once, but I'd like to explore it more thoroughly.
Fallen Petals: ah, my beloved dark rose! I was skeptical until I read Rise from the Ashes and became a believer in Ruby's power to redeem Cinder with kisses.
Strawberry Shortcake: very similar to Fallen Petals, but with more comedic potential between less murdery Neo and Ruby.
Death's White Rose: this one is entirely @powertaco 's fault. Ruby, Weiss, and a somehow young Maria Calavera. It's grown on me.
Red Fox: my wildcard. I typically am dead set against shipping any of RWBY with men, but I started writing Fox trying to flirt with Ruby as a joke and decided they're kind of adorable together.
Weiss
North Pole/Schneekos: I love Weiss and Pyrrha together. They have a lot in common with being women put on pedestals and always expected to be exceptional... and then there's the height difference thing. They're the backbone of Scattered Petals.
White Chocolate: fashionista rich girls who experimented on a dare and liked it? OR committed lesbian Coco seducing the uptight thinks-she's-straight Weiss? Yessssss.
Black Ice: hear me out here. MILF Salem playing a long, strategic game of seduction with Weiss, offering her power to make the world as she believes it should be, and vengeance against her father, only to actually fall for her? Weiss *knowing* what's happening and thinking she can play Salem, until suddenly it's not playing her anymore? Dirty and delicious!
Hailstorm: I was recently put onto this one by a couple of @powertaco 's fics about them, and I'm kinda taken with the Ruby/Weiss/Nora dynamic. It feels like it works best when one of them is damaged and the other two, in a healthy relationship, adopt them.
Blake
Catmeleon: Obviously. My only gripe with Bumbleby is that Ilia is a total sweetheart, and her "I wish you'd looked at me the way you looked at him" line breaks my heart every time.
Black Velvet: I just think they'd be sweet together, and their different perspectives on life as a faunus would be interesting to see interact.
Yang
Baked Alaska: I started writing this out of spite when @etincelleart was getting harassed for drawing it, and realized that, like many things with Neo, it's a lot of fun. The idea that Yang realized Neo was mute and learned sign language *just* so they could banter during fights is adorable.
Greek Fire: I think this one is a fun one to explore precisely because it takes Yang's usual position as the buff, strong protector and lets her be Pyrrha's little spoon. Great for sports AUs.

Ruby Alone
As you all have seen, since prior to the last episode, I’ve been sharing my thoughts and ideas on the theory of V8 concluding with the “death” of RWBY after they fall “off Remnant and into a mysterious Other World”, as alluded to by Oscar.
While I’m still inclined to believe that theory may become possible given what transpired in this recent episode, in reviewing the RWBY V8 Opening, I noticed something interesting about the visuals again which caught my attention.
During the opening, RWBY falling was hinted much earlier in the theme during these shots right here. It’s these two shots of RWBY’s signature weapons falling through negative space which is later followed up by the opening ending with the weapons landing together on the ground.
However, here’s the bit that I think is noteworthy that I didn’t take into account before. Although the weapons of all four main girls were shown falling together through space and landing on the ground, not only is Crescent Rose the last one to hit the ground but it is also the ONLY one shown in the final shot of the opening.
It is also worth noting that the weapons fall in this particular order---first Ember Celica, then Gambal Shroud, then Myrtenaster and final Crescent Rose which ironically spells RWBY backwards.
And going back to my theory about RWBY falling in order....with Yang falling first then this is all starting to make more sense.
Going back to my point---Crescent Rose---Ruby’s weapon is the only weapon that landed on the ground but didn’t fade to darkness like the others. Instead, Crescent Rose is the only one remaining in the snow on what appears to be Remannt. Keeping that in mind, it’s making me start to ponder an alternative to my V8 finale theory.
What if…I’m actually mistaken about the whole RWBY team falling prey to the Other World ?
What if…as an alternative prediction, V8 will end with Ruby as the last man standing and the sole surviving member of her team after the rest “die” to the void?
Thus; V9 becomes Ruby’s story as she deals with the depression of losing her whole team; all obviously culminating with her eventually reuniting with them in the Other World. But before that, it’s mostly just about Ruby. Not RWBY. But just Ruby since RWBY started with just Ruby on her own in Remnant, trying to become a huntress. She only ends up going to Beacon and meeting and forming her own team due to Ozpin’s influence.
So imagine if...after everything she’s been through these last eight seasons, things just go back to how they were before. Ruby is on her own again. No team to lead. No big sister to guide and protect her (although ALPNE is there of course). No “BFFs” or “future-sister-in-law” on the same team to fuel her spark of hope. She no longer has her main friends by her side.
Ruby will be on her own for the first time in a long time and it becomes just her story for the most part of V9 as she does her best to figure out things all while the rest of the cast who survived the fall---Penny, ALPNE and their allies in Vauco and eventually Vale---try to provide her with the emotional support that she needs in place of the one she lost.
For the first time, the story is not about Ruby having to be the spark of hope to support others but…her friends, at least the ones she still have, coming together to support her for once in a time when she can truly need it.
Like I said. It would be the story of Ruby. Not RWBY. Just Ruby. If you get what I mean.
...And now for a squiggly rant...about Ruby:
One general complaint that I’ve heard from the FNDM about Ruby including Little Red Ruby fans like myself is that Ruby has more or less received the shortest end of the stick in terms of development over the past couple of seasons since V4…despite the fact that she is our central main character who is the leader of our core team with her name literally being in the title. Not to mention that Ruby is also the face of the RWBY franchise. When RT isn’t promoting the whole RWBY team together, it’s mainly Ruby to represent RWBY since of all the girls, she is the main one as the main protagonist of RWBY. At least…she’s supposed to be?
To be blunter, I’m just going to call out the fat Heffalump in the room---Ruby Rose, despite being the leader of RWBY---despite being our title character and face of the franchise---the one characters in the show always turn to since she’s THAT important---despite all of that, Ruby has NOT felt like the actual main protagonist of RWBY for several seasons. Since V4 as some fans like to point out.
And after closely observing her story over the last few volumes, I can’t help but agree with these critiques and comments of Ruby’s treatment when it comes to her own writing. Even when the CRWBY showrunners DO attempt to do stuff with her---it all falls...flat especially when you compare Ruby to other characters like Jaune Arc, for example, whose stories and overall development were handled much better. At least in my opinion.
Don’t believe me? Take for example, Ruby’s whole so-called “arc” as a Silver Eyed Warrior. First it was introduced as a new idea for Ruby during the FINALE of V3, then it got abandoned for two whole seasons between V4-V5. Then it got reintroduced back in V6 but was then rushed and dropped yet again for V7 only to be brought up again briefly during V8…kind of?
It’s really telling when you realize that Ruby gained control of her silver eyes despite never truly receiving any actual training from Maria in how to control her powers. Not only that but the showrunners really did Maria Calavera dirty. She was supposed to be the wise old mentor who was a badass in her prime meant to pass down her wisdom to her young eager apprentice who knew nothing of her own unique abilities including its mysterious origins.
Instead Maria didn’t know at all about where her powers originated from until she conveniently met our heroes after the Argus Ltd crash and just happened to be present when they asked Jinn about Oz’s secrets. Instead of being a mentor to Ruby which she was initially propped up to be, Maria ended up being relegated to the Granny Uber Driver of the hero team---no longer the wise experienced ex-huntress whose supposed to be teaching our title character but just a form of transportation who provides the occasional comic relief and support for Pietro Polendina, who she was put to work with…instead of Ruby…her alleged apprentice?
Shoot---despite being a Silver Eyed Warrior, Ruby was never even a person of interest for this volume. Despite the main big bad being in Atlas and despite targeting her in the past, Salem…never goes after Ruby again while she’s in Atlas??? Ruby never even meets Salem? Despite…Salem targeting Ruby back in V4? Despite Salem’s history with capturing Silver Eyes? Despite Salem’s connection to Ruby through her mother???
Ruby is never actively a part of the Salem subplot on Monstra…even though… certain developments left over from previous seasons indicated that she should’ve been?
Instead…we got to watch Yang accost Salem for Summer Rose’s death after SHE is the one to be on the rescue party to save Oscar from Monstro. Even though…Yang has neither been a person of interest to Salem before NOR has the Xiao Long girl been shown to be a close affiliate of Oscar in the past prior to V8 NOR has the Xiao Long girl actually addressed Summer Rose as her mother since V2???
Up until V8, Ruby has always been the character of focus with all things Summer Rose and Salem and yet…we NEVER saw her meet Salem in the flesh period for this season…at all…???
Instead; Ruby spends MOST of this season cooped up at Schnee Manor, completely absent from and even oblivious to some of the more dire PLOT stuff that was happening outside of Schnee Manor (such as YJR going into Monstra to save Oscar before the Aces Ops blew up the whale).
Despite her connection to Oscar who became Salem’s prisoner. Despite her connection to Salem through her mother. Despite being a Silver Eye and a former target of Salem. Despite the Hound and what it turned out to be. Despite the showrunners literally teasing Ruby meeting Salem face to face back in V7---WE NEVER GET TO SEE RUBY MEET SALEM IN THE FLESH AT ALL DURING V8 WHILE SALEM IS IN ATLAS???
Salem targets Oscar which makes perfect sense given his connection to Ozma as his current incarnate. But Salem doesn’t target Ruby? DESPITE HER BEING A TARGET OF HERS IN THE PAST? DESPITE HER BEING A SILVER EYED WARRIOR? DESPITE WHAT THE HOUND REVEALED?
Why didn’t Salem send the Hound after Ruby? That would’ve made more sense, again knowing what the Hound actually was? Instead the Hound was sent after Penny which, in my opinion, felt mighty redundant since Salem already had Watts and Cinder Fall dealing with Penny.
THEY EVEN TEASED THE HOUND TARGETING RUBY BUT IT WAS ALL A FLUKE. RUBY IS COMPLETELY OMITTED FROM THE SALEM SUBPLOT EVEN THOUGH SHE IS THE TITLE CHARACTER AND THE ONLY ONE ON TEAM RWBY WITH A LEGIT CONNECTION TO SALEM AND HAS BEEN A TARGET OF HERS SINCE V4???
I DON’T GET IT!
…BUT… with my mini rant aside, those are just a few of the inconsistencies that I’ve noticed in the writing of RWBY in respect to Ruby Rose.
Overall; the point I’m trying to make here is this: for the sake of sounding like a Negative Nancy, I ask this honest question to the CRWBY Writers. How? How can you fumble this much with your own title character? I’m not saying this to come off disrespectful. I’m saying this as someone who has followed the story of RWBY since the get-go and has closely observed the treatment of its characters; particularly the main ones and particularly the ones that I personally love and Ruby is one of them.
Despite being our main girl, Ruby’s writing hasn’t been the squeakiest, admittedly. As a matter of fact, it’s been quite messy since V4 due to the amount of times the showrunners have introduced ideas for her only to abandon them later on thus creating those problems with consistency I mentioned earlier.
Overall, it’s difficult for me to even say that Ruby is the lead character of RWBY since often times; she doesn’t FEEL like the main protagonist despite the show claiming how important she is meant to be. And this sentiment is due in part to how messy her story is handled compared to other characters of lesser importance.
And it’s a sad thing for me to say as both a viewer and fan of Ruby’s character since Ruby is THE lead main character of RWBY. She’s like the Tony Stark of the RWBY-verse. She’s the one who started it all yet her story is one of the messiest I’ve seen in terms of direction and treatment. At least by my observations since this is just my opinion on the subject matter.
It’s one thing to blunder a bit on your side or even your supporting characters. But to slip up on your lead characters, especially your MAIN one who is the FACE of the show, c’mon CRWBY Writers.
And the events of V8 didn’t help change my opinion. After taking away all the bloat this season had for all the stuff they tried to shove into this one season, I realized that V8 didn’t really do much for Ruby. At least, not as much as I anticipated.
I was hoping that Ruby would’ve been a more focal character for V8 since V7 teased some stuff for her in respect to Salem. Instead, I watched a season where Ruby felt more like a supporting character for Penny Polendina since, in my opinion, Penny received much more focus and better development for V8 while Ruby, our LEAD took backstage to her story.
Because while Ruby was stuck playing supporting character, she was actively left out of subplots that she should’ve been a major part of. Not just because she’s the “protagonist” but because of elements to her story that were developed seasons prior but seemed to have gotten dropped for V8?
Ruby’s treatment for V8, to me, is an example of a “build-up with no payoff”. All that stuff between her and Salem and her mother felt like it ultimately didn’t matter in the end because Ruby didn’t even meet Salem.
Yang, to me, had the development with Salem that Ruby should’ve received.
Shoot---Ruby wasn’t even a thought on Salem’s mind…despite the events V4 and V7???
I just don’t understand.
But like always, this is just how I feel about it. I’m disappointed with how Ruby was done for this season. While I liked the moment she shared with Blake in V8CH8 and Yang in V8CH11...that’s pretty much the ONLY thing I liked about Ruby’s story for this season.
Outside of that, it felt to me like the showrunners didn’t do much with her for V8. In a season of so much happening, the stuff that happened with Ruby on her side of the story didn’t honestly stand out to me compared to what I saw the showrunners do for other characters who aren’t the lead this season.
It’s not like I’m trying to say she didn’t receive any development at all for V8. It’s more like most of what was done with Ruby didn’t quite stand out to me so it ends up feeling like not much was done for her.
To me, Ruby falls into the same category as Nora Valkyrie for this season. Despite the PLOT preaching about them getting big developments, if you rock back and actually analyse the narrative, you’d actually see that not much was done for them despite the PLOT “talking the talk but not walking the walk” y’know what I mean?
And going back to Ruby, that’s disappointing since I wanted more for Ruby. I EXPECTED MORE for Ruby as our title lead but it didn’t happened. Instead it felt like some of the major developments that she should’ve received for this season went to other characters while she in turn took a backseat.
Things didn’t really start kicking up for Rubes until halfway through the season when the 100th episode aired and the Hound appeared. And even then the excitement of that reveal was short-lived since...Ruby was NOT the real target of the Hound. PENNY WAS. The Hound wasn’t sent to antagonize RUBY. It was sent for Penny which to me sort of undermines the reveal.
Some Ruby fans have been wishing for the show to feel more about just Ruby again for quite some time now and it is for this reason why I’m starting to dig this alternative theory of mine with Ruby surviving “The Fall of the Central Zone” alone with the rest of her team lost to the Other World.
While the concept of RWBY being trapped together in another world is still on the table of possibilities, I still wish to toss out this other one too.
I like the idea of a more Ruby-centric season where for the second time in the narrative, she’s separated from her core teammates only this time…it’s in “death” or rather “nonexistence” or “nothingness” since from Ruby’s perspective with her limited knowledge of magic (despite what she does know from Oz and Jinn) and the workings of the world that Ambrosius created, she doesn’t know what truly happened to her team.
The only thing she knows is that she watched her whole team dissipate into nothing before her very eyes and that is the last memory she has of them that haunts her for some time.
Imagine if…V9 will be about Ruby dealing with such a huge loss which could potentially touch more upon how she internalizes death in general tying back into probably flashbacks of her time with her mother before she learnt of her death at a young age.
While I understand we’ve had a storyline with Ruby being separated from her main team before back during V4-V5, however a plot line like this would be different this rounds since unlike before, Ruby at least knew that her team mates were alive. Far away. Separated by distance. But still alive and still a part of Remnant with the hope that she would be reunited with them again.
However this won’t be the case this second time. It would truly be Ruby alone since her team would be gone and no one could provide her with the solace of seeing them again---not even the friends she does still have (although that doesn’t stop some of them from trying to be there for the little red rose who has now lost more than her heart could handle)
I know the off-chance of this theory actually coming to fruition might be scarce. But like many ideas I’ve shared, it’s still worth tossing out since you guys know how this squiggle meister likes to roll.

Ranking RWBY moms, from best to worst:
Summer:
Great mom, complete badass who somehow managed to balance being a huntress and being mom perfectly
Instilled her girls with a love of cookies and deadly weapons at a young age
Didn’t care that Yang wasn’t biologically related to her and love her as much as she did Ruby
It wasn’t really her fault that Salem killed her, and honestly going off on missions probably kept Salem from tracking her down at home, which would have killed Ruby too
Kali
What is this? A living mother? In a fantasy show? And she’s not even evil???
Kali is a great mom
Loves her daughter no matter what
Is supportive of her choices in boys (maybe a little too supportive?)
Allows Blake the freedom she wants and never lets her forget she’s loved
Was named after the goddess of destruction for a reason. You don’t mess with her family. Adam was lucky Yang got to him first
Maria Calavera
More of a grandmother then a mom, but still a great parental figure
She’s the mom of team RWBY and co because as you can see most of them don’t have moms
I don’t think she could cook though. She’d probably make these lethal cookies
But she can kill Grimm!
Would definitely encourage her ‘kids’ to do illegal stuff
She makes Qrow look responsible
She’s definitely got plenty of good life advice and plenty of knowledge
An Ren:
She’s a pretty great mom
Sacrifice herself for Ren (I think)
Honestly we don’t see much of her so I’m just going to leave it at that
Ironically she gets more screen time then Summer Rose but Summer Rose gets more personality
Eh
Ilia’s mom
We don’t know much about her but she obviously really loved her daughter, doing hard and dangerous work to give her a better life
Willow Schnee
I know she’s also an abuse victim, but she kinda abandoned her children to her abusive husband
She made her older daughter basically raise her younger sister, something she wasn’t equipped to do, because she was too busy drowning her sorrows
And she expected Weiss to do the same thing, apparently. “Of course he hates you, you left him with us.” I mean what the frickly frack lady? You are a parent! It’s you’re job to raise your kids and protect them, not your teenage daughter who has enough issues herself.
But she did finally snap out of it in vol 8 and saved Weiss’s life so…not a total deadbeat.
Raven Branwen:
Abandoned her daughter for no good reason
Instead of owning up to it continues to act like she’s got the morally high ground for some reason
Could literally see her daughter at any time but doesn’t
Gets upset when Yang is dismissive of her, like Yang owes her anything
Last seen abandoning Yang again, this time leaving her with a beacon to all things evil, because she doesn’t want to die.
Words can’t really express what a terrible mom Raven is.
Nora’s mom
Somehow even worst then Raven. She left her six-year-old daughter to be eaten by Grimm.
Salem:
Murdered her own kids
Abused her adopted kid
Is probably the worst mother in all of RWBY

AOT characters if they were hunters/huntresses in RWBY
author's note: first of all no one asked for this, but here it is anyway. please let me know your thoughts! i love rwby and aot so much and wanted to combine them in whatever way i could. in my mind this had to be done 💕
characters: eren, armin, mikasa, jean
warnings: implication of violence, talk of monsters and weapons, lots of talk about guns and killing monsters, star rambles
eren jeager
his semblance would be something to do with his emotions.
it would be a lot like yang and adam's, but not the exact same.
the angrier he is the stronger he gets essentially, but the drawback is that he doesn't think through his actions.
basically his character arc would be about trying to control his anger and using it in a productive way instead of trying to win fights with his semblance alone.
either that or he can see the future by a few seconds.
like, he knows what his enemy is going to do before they do.
his weapon would be a small knife, taking inspiration from when he was young and saving mikasa.
he would also carry a rifle that carries an extra knife incase he looses the other one in a battle.
he much prefers to kill grimm up close and person as opposed to from a distance.
naturally, he excels in hand to hand combat.
would be on a team with armin, mikasa, and jean (Team AJEM)
armin arlert
his weapon would be a sniper rifle and staff hybrid, you can't change my mine.
it would also be able to be turned into a trident for stabbing purposes.
i also fully believe that he would be terrified of hte grimm so he would keep them at a distance
his semblence was much harder to figure out than his weapon.
likely, it would be something to do with knowledge.
i'd like to think he can read especially fast, so he's very quick to learn about combat and grimm.
or his semblence would be based on water (he is a water sign and loves the sea).
he would be able to pull water out of the air like katara can in ATLA.
he could use it to slash opponents or to drown them if he had the time.
he would be the team leader, no doubt in my mind.
mikasa ackerman
mikasa's semblence was easy af- preflexes, like maria calavera.
either that or she had insane muscle memory, like someone will teach her a move once and she will never forget how it goes.
her and eren often team up together, with his future vision and her insane muscle memory they are unstoppable as a duo
IDEA, she can move as fast like lightening.
she could zip between grimm super fast, but only in small bursts and not for long periods of time. think a zenitsu-like ability.
her weapon would be dual wielded, like inosuke and they normally do with the ODM gear swords.
she is insanely protective of eren like in the normal canon.
THE SWORDS ALSO HACE PISTOLS ATTACHED, so she can do normal sword things but also shoot grimm from a distance.
jean kirschtein
okay, hear me out here.
his semblance would be based around sparks.
like he could snap his fingers and sparks would set off. If the right kindling is around he can set full on fires.
or another idea i had was that he would be able to freeze opponents, but if he freezes an opponent he can't be the one who kills it.
the second one forces him to work with the rest of the team even when he doesn't want to. more often than not with eren or mikasa.
if he has the first semblance he would have a large ax as a weapon, ya know for choppin wood 🤪
the axe would obviously turn into a sawed off shotgun that shoot huge buckshot at grimm
if he had the second semblance he would have a large claymore-like sword.
he could freeze multiple opponents if he stabs the sword into the ground and focuses.

an AU where Maria Calavera became a professor at Beacon Academy
inspired by @fairylolz2‘s post
I badly wanted an AU where Maria trained Qrow so I immediately latched onto this one LMAO
so some little things in this AU:
Maria would probably about 45ish and above in the AU, just like STRQ’s canon-ish age in comparison to Team RWBY
Because Maria is hiding from those hunting her down and people who know her, she also hid the fact that she’s a Silver-Eyed Warrior. That’s why her remaining eye is brown -- she wears some sort of contact that looks natural
Team STRQ is amazed at Professor Calavera. Not because she’s terrible at teaching a class, but because she has a lot of “cool stories” as a Huntress (more cashew incidents, I guess)
She’s exasperated at Qrow’s idolization of the Grimm Reaper since she feels that she was a failure by retiring as a Huntress to hide from her enemies. At the same time, she sees a part of her in him that still draws her close to the young boy
Apparently, Raven’s bandit manners, unrefined nature and contrasting ideologies rub off of Maria. Raven butt heads with her so often and Maria’s buttons could sometimes be pushed by her. But because of Qrow’s stories, Maria tries to understand and kinda relates to Raven through her own personal conflict of survival vs. nobility / duty
Maria is obviously fond of Summer because of her optimism + the fact that she’s a Silver-Eyed Warrior. I sort of headcanon that SEWs get “good vibes” from one another immediately because they’re so rare and a part of a single clan
Because Qrow (dragging Raven along) often goes to Maria for tips and “stories” (she’s really good at training one person at a time, though), Taiyang figured he could “pilfer” information about Raven from her since a) Summer teases him relentlessly about her and b) Qrow would tattle about his mad crush on Raven anytime if he knew. He trusts Maria in keeping secrets. Maria is both game and not so game at it
Maria uses a different weapon than a scythe because she couldn’t risk anyone recognizing her. Sketches, stolen pics, trading cards and all that jazz captured some details of her weapons that could give her identity away
She’s the goddamn mother figure of STRQ. YOU CAN’T STOP ME
I’m gonna tag future related drawings as The Grimm Reaper is a Teacher (AU) / Professor Calavera (AU) (check out the tags!!!)

With Catlike Tread
Page the First: What Ought We to Do?
Ruby shut the door behind her, pinching her brow with a sigh. “Okay, it’s pretty bad.”
“Did you find them?”
“Yes. Apparently, Qrow got drunk again, and now he and Oscar are being held in jail. That’s not the big issue, though.” Ruby walked over to a chair and slumped into it. “They confiscated the relic.”
Yang blinked. “Sorry, did I hear that right? The Relic of Knowledge--”
“--was mistaken for something that the two ‘vagabonds’ obviously stole from some rich guy, so now it’s in the police chief’s safe and it’s going to be moved to a more secure vault tomorrow. I tried to say it was a family heirloom, but they demanded proof and, well...” Ruby spread her hands. “I got kicked out.”
“Oh, that’s perfect.” Yang leaned against the wall and groaned. “That’s just great, that... what is wrong with the cops in this town?”
“The town’s called Keisatsukuso,” Weiss said dryly. “I’m somehow not surprised in the slightest.”
“What’s the town’s name got to do with anything?”
Blake cleared her throat. “Well... in the original tongue from which the name is derived, it translates--”
Ruby held up a hand. “Look, let’s just get to the point. We need to break out Qrow and Oscar, and we need to get the relic out of the police chief’s hands.” She gave Weiss a look. “I don’t suppose you have enough to bribe them out?”
“Hmm.” Her partner looked through a suitcase. “...Enough to pay bail for the boys, maybe. Not nearly enough to get a priceless artifact back.”
“Maybe you could say it belongs to the Schnees,” Blake suggested.
“I... don’t think that would work,” Ruby said hesitantly. “I saw some pretty foul anti-Schnee graffiti on the side of the police station... it looked a couple weeks old. If they didn’t get rid of that...”
A dry chuckle came from the hall. “So, the old wizard got himself in trouble, eh?”
Yang turned her eyes on the hunched over woman hobbling into the room. “Hey, just because you knew him before he was Ozpin--”
“Let’s not start this up,” Weiss sighed. “Miss Calavera--”
“Call me Maria, please.”
“Miss Calavera,” Weiss repeated firmly, “we need to get Qrow, Oscar, and the relic out of police hands. If you have any suggestions at all, we would be happy to hear them.”
The old woman hummed thoughtfully, a finger tapping on her skull-headed cane. “Yes... somebody to get into a fortified position, retrieve one item, and break out two targets... and the police here are, hmm, well trained and armed. The way I see it, overwhelming force is not going to work, not that you have that anyway. But... if somebody were to slip in and liberate the targets themselves, we might be able to slip away under cover of night.”
Blake shook her head. “You said it yourself, the police are trained and armed. I’ve... been on a few missions like this myself, and I think they’d be ready for any of us.”
“Humans and faunus, yes...” The old woman had an unnerving smile on her face as her goggles focused on Blake. “Have you ever heard the story of the lost village?”
Ruby put her head in her hands. “This is going to be another one of those ‘fairy tales that turn out to be true,’ isn’t it?”
“Well, yes. Don’t blame the wizard for not telling you, it hasn't been relevant before and it could do quite a bit of damage if the story was well known.” The woman hobbled over to the table, pulling a mortar and pestle out of her robes. “There’s quite a number of variants, of course, but the core elements are the same: there was a village that befriended fairies in the local forest, so when they were attacked by raiders they turned to the fairies for help. The fairies let them take traits from the various animals living in the forest, which helped the villagers to survive even after they were scattered.”
“...You’re talking about the faunus,” Blake said, quietly.
“Yes. People who know... part of the story, who see the blessing as a curse, they’ve tried to ‘cure’ faunus before. Burned off their ears, cut off their tails...” The woman shook her head, putting a few herbs in the mortar. “It is best that particular story remain forgotten. Still, for our purposes, it does provide us with a unique opportunity.”
Yang narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean?”
“There’s magic in your young lady’s blood. It’s mostly dormant, but with the right potion...” The woman smirked as she worked her pestle. “Well, the guards won’t be looking for something small and furry.”
For a brief moment, the only sound was ceramic against ceramic as the woman continued to crush together small plants.
“...Are you suggesting we turn Blake into a cat?” Weiss asked, very carefully keeping her voice level.
“Well, I am skilled in enchantments. What with being a hedge witch and all.”
Yang shook her head. “No. No, we’re not letting you put your voodoo on Blake.”
The old woman smiled wryly at her. “Technically, it isn’t voodoo.”
“Whatever! I mean, what, turning her into a cat just to get a doodad? That’s an insane idea.”
“I’m... not comfortable with it myself,” Blake allowed.
“See?”
“...but...”
Yang stared at her incredulously. “What, seriously Blake?”
“I want to know what exactly this would entail before I reject it completely. That’s all. And...” Blake rubbed her arm, not quite looking at her. “I mean... faunus heritage, right...?”
“Faunus... I...” The blonde’s mouth worked for a bit as she tried to figure out a way to say what she was thinking without offending anyone. “...Ruby! Come on, you’re against this, right?”
“I’m sorry, I know this is a serious discussion, but my brain is stuck on ‘Blake as a cat would be adorable.’“
Weiss shrugged. “I mean... you’re not wrong, but that shouldn’t be the primary reason we do this.”
“Oh, obviously. And we’d need Blake’s consent, of course.”
“And already you two have more ethical standards then three quarters of enchanters in fairy tales.” The old woman chuckled wryly. “Don’t worry, it’s certainly not permanent. Three hours, three hours and fifteen minutes... somewhere in that time frame.”
Blake took a breath. “And are there... side effects?”
“Oh my gods,” Yang groaned, “we’re actually considering this.”
“Not at all. Well, as a cat your senses would be altered, of course--balance, scent, vision, all of that--but beyond that, there’s usually only a mild sense of disorientation following the transformation from faunus to cat, and vice versa.”
“Wait.” Yang held up a hand. “What do you mean, usually?”
The old woman hummed thoughtfully. “I’ve never seen it happen myself, but the texts I learned this potion from have mentioned that some faunus come out of the transformation with an additional trait. A tail, claws, it’s not very common.”
Blake turned, pacing around the room. One finger wrapped around her chin, while the other hand rubbed her ear.
Yang took a breath. “Look. There are more mundane, far less heavy body-modifying options. Ruby could zip through the building and take what she wants. Weiss could send a tiny summon in to sneak around. Blake already has the ability to basically ninja anywhere, and I...” She glanced down at herself. “I don’t know, maybe I can seduce the guards or something.”
“I’m doing it.”
Yang’s eyes snapped to Blake. “What?”
“I’ll take the potion. It’s something the police wouldn’t have been trained for, so it’s our best bet to get everything we need.” Blake cleared her throat. “And, if I get caught, somebody could always come in and claim they ‘lost their pet cat.’ Easy extraction.”
“I mean, they’ve seen Ruby and I’m famous,” Weiss mused, “so it would have to be Yang...”
Blake nodded firmly. “Right. So... I’ll take that potion. I mean after we make a plan. Ruby, you’ve got an outline of the building, right?”
“Right, of course.” Ruby stood up, pulling out her scroll. “I wasn’t on the second floor, but that’s where the relic is, I think.”
“It would be best if the rest of us were waiting outside, just in case we needed to help.” Weiss leaned over Ruby’s shoulder. “Patrol around the windows, in case she needs to jump...”
Yang pinched the bridge of her nose. “Okay, we’re actually doing this. Fine.”
She paused.
“And for the record, she is not my young lady, alright? She’s her own young lady. Okay, granny?”
The old woman nodded. “Of course, of course.”

Little Red Headcanons: Ruby the Saviour of Humanity
crystalandbrass asked
“Hey long time no speak so I have two theories on RWBY I want to run by you the first is the lamp, I feel it functions like the old 'Be careful how you word your wish' essentially you have to be spercific with what you ask as Ozpin only asked 'How do I kill Salem?' Djinn obviously said there was no way because Salem is immortal, however if Ozpin asked 'How do I defeat Salem?' Djinn might have given up how to undo Salem's immorttality. What do you think? I will give the 2nd one later”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Squiggles Answers:
@crystalandbrass
Hey Crystal, what’s up? Apologies for the late response but I hope you’ve been doing well in these trying times, fam. To answer your question, that’s an interesting way to look at it. I agree with your point about Jinn answering questions according to their wording but I’d like to add an additional hunch that I think the results are also dependent on the person asking the questions.
During his lifetime with Norman, Ozma asked Jinn how “he” could destroy Salem. Only for Jinn to answer that “he” couldn’t. For me, I took that as Jinn indicating that Ozma wasn’t the one destined to stop Salem once and for all. It doesn’t necessarily mean that destroying Salem isn’t possible. Ozma (and by extension, the Wizards of Light following in his lineage) just wasn’t the one meant to do so. He had his own part to play in this ongoing fight for the fate of humanity.
I’d like to stand by the concept that there is someone in Remnant who destined to stop Salem.
I also believe that the key to stopping Salem for good isn’t through destroying her either. Yes she needs to be stopped, but I don’t think her fate is to die by the hands of her chosen adversary but rather the way the Gods intended for her to die.
It’s for this reason I like the theory that was eluded by Nora in V7CH6 during her conversation with Ruby.
“…We’ve spent so much time worrying about how Ironwood would react to the truth about her; but has any of us considered how we’re even going to beat her if we managed to work past that?”
“Jinn said she can’t be beaten.”
“She told Oz that he couldn’t destroy her.”
“…But…maybe someone else could?”
“…I don’t know.”
A part of me thinks that if someone were to ask Jinn the question of “Who can stop Salem?” then I believe her answer might be a bit more hopeful as she reveals the identity of humanity’s true saviour against the plight of Salem. In the Lost Fable, Jinn did say that in time Salem would’ve ultimately met her adversary. During the events of that episode, us as viewers were led to believe that that person would be Ozma.
However now that I think about it---despite creating Salem and resurrecting the soul of her former beloved, the Brother Gods NEVER really tasked Ozma with stopping Salem. All the God of Light told Ozma to focus on was figuring out a way to unite humanity as a means of recreating the world that they once had---that he once knew. A world where humanity was made whole again with the return of the Gods and their magic to live among the People of Remnant again. Now that I think about it, the God of Light warned Ozma to not pursue Salem as he more desired for him to focus on avoiding the inevitable Judgement Day and the end of the world should he fail in bringing the people together.
From the start, the purpose of Ozma and the Wizards of Light was always to see to humanity’s preservation by uniting them for it is only in harmony shall they be saved and spared the wrath of the Gods should they be summoned back to Second Remnant.
From what I gathered from the Lost Fable, First Remnant was a time when mankind more or less lived in commune with not just each other but also the Brothers. However that changed after Salem rallied all the leaders of the First People of Remnant and turned them against the Gods thus leading to their mass genocide by the God of Darkness.
You can say that from the beginning, Salem has been a figure of conflict--- dividing humanity--- turning them against one another as a means of only fulfilling her own selfish desires.
From the get-go, Salem has been a source of manipulation and division. This was not only evidenced by her turning the People of Remnant against the Gods but her first attempt was done even before that when she dared turn the Brothers against one another after manipulating Darkness into resurrecting Ozma against his brother’s wishes and prior knowledge.
Salem was only cursed because she refused to see the value in human life beyond herself and sadly to say, even after living on Remnant for over thousands of years; she still only views mankind as nothing less to her than mere pawns to achieve her goals. She even came to see her own beloved Ozma as the very same thing---an obstacle against her retaining her sense of freedom.
“…We finally have freedom!”
I know other RWBY fans have pegged Salem to be nothing more than an irredeemable villain and character; however I think the opposite. Ultimately, I think Salem’s fate is to die after finally learning the lesson the God of Light tried to get her to see. Believe it or not, I’m actually an advocate for Salem getting redeemed at some point for the future of RWBY.
While Salem has been shown to be selfish and manipulative, she’s also expressed a softer, more compassionate side to her as well; as evidenced by her love and determination for Ozma and even their children during Ozma’s second lifetime as Diggs.
I’d even go as far as to say that there is a slight, almost parental approach to Salem’s mentor and apprentice relationship with Cinder Fall; if that makes sense. Again, while I understand that Salem is a villain, there are qualities about her that has convinced me that she can be redeemed and ultimately will be saved since that’s how I think her story will end based on elements from the Lost Fable.
I think Salem is the way she is, not so much due to her corruption from her baptism in the Grimm Pools of Darkness but more so as a result of her past and upbringing; being locked away in isolation for so long---having her own freedom stripped away away from her at an adolescent age by the acts of her cruel father.
Going back to your question on the lamp---I think what needs to happen next is either for someone to ask Jinn for the identity of the person destined to bring forth Salem’s end. Or for that person to ask Jinn that question herself.
Since V6, I can’t help but feel like the show is slowly starting to pave the reveal that Ruby Rose will be the one to stop Salem. NOT destroy her or kill her. But more or less guide her back to the light after the former lonely princess had submerged herself in darkness for so long; thus transforming herself into the wicked witch we knew her to be.
I feel like Ruby has the potential of being placed in a similar tricky scenario that Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender faced during his final confrontation with Fire Lord Ozai.
Much like Aang, this squiggle meister believes that Ruby will be the one to stop Salem but she’ll be torn over the thought of actually killing her if she were to discover to possess that kind of power.
I’m not saying I’m expecting Ruby to talk Salem out of being evil.
I’m more in favour of my Little Red Ruby headcanon of Ruby’s silver eyes being a remnant of the God of Light’s Fountain of Light and Creation that was introduced during the events of the Lost Fable. We’ve already met Ozma---the First Wizard of Light tasked by the God of Light and blessed with his power to unite the people of Remnant to avoid its destruction should Judgement Day come.
Now what I need to know is the origins of the Silver Eyes. I want to know who the First Silver Eyed Warrior to walk Remnant was since I believe that their beginning is connected to the Fountain of Life and Creation. Much like the Grimm Pools, the Fountain of Life and Creation once belonged to a God and thus harbours some semblance of his power.
This is how I think Salem is able to command the Creatures of Grimm. It was the God of Darkness who first made the Grimm, correct? Therefore since his pool was connected to him, by baptising herself in said pool that once belonged to a God, Salem gained powers akin to the God of Darkness---at least in respect to the ability to command the Grimm and even create her own Grimm monstrosities.
While the God of Darkness’ Grimm Pools survived the test of time, the Fountain of Life and Creation seemed to have been destroyed during the meteor shower sparked by the God of Darkness destroying part of the moon. Since World of Remnant described man being born from dust; my assumption is that the Silver Eyed Warriors are the remnants of the Fountain.
Therefore, the Silver Eyed Warriors are the living embodiment of the Fountain of Life and Creation. This, by my understanding, is how the Silver Eyed Warriors are connected to the God of Light. Just like the Wizards of Light in Ozma’s lineage, the Silver Eyes possess a portion of Light’s power running through their veins.
In the Lost Fable, it was shown that the God of Light cursed Salem with immortality by dropping her into his Fountain. If the Silver Eyes were ‘born’ from the Fountain then a Silver Eyed Warrior may be the only being that can actually harm Salem or even stop her.
Hence Ruby’s importance as she is currently the last living Silver Eye, according to the main series narrative. I remember reading somewhere about a theory someone had shared about the markings on Salem’s body---the weird blood-coloured scars that resemble veins---someone made theory that those markings may have come from Silver Eyed Warriors that Salem killed in the past.
I actually quite like this theory and I’d like to add my own spin on it.
In V4, Arthur Watts alluded to Salem and her minions dealing with Silver Eyes in the past and this point was confirmed in later iterations such as V6CH7 with Tock and her pawns targeting a young Maria Calavera in her prime and even the Warrior from the Warrior in the Woods tale in the upcoming Fairy Tales From Remnant.
So it’s my understanding that Salem and her pawns have been ruthlessly hunting and killing the Silver Eyes for many generations due to their unique ability to stop the Grimm.
But here’s what I think. What if…Salem’s scars were as a result on an encounter with ONE Silver Eyed Warrior and not as a result of her dealing with many over the years?
Despite hunting their kind for so long, what if…there has only been one Silver Eyed Warrior who has come close to even touching Salem and those scars are the lasting impression that that particular Silver Eye left on Salem as a relic of what that power can actually do to her.
What if… Salem got her scars from Summer Rose?
Even though Salem succeeded in killing Summer (as alluded to in V7CH10), what if…another Summer Rose secret is the revelation of the way to stop Salem---a feat that Summer left in the hands of her daughter.
I know this is only a hunch but I really do like the thought of Summer Rose being the one who inflicted those types of wounds on Salem, revealing the witch’s own fallibility in a sense. It’s not a bad concept but for now it’s just another one for the table of possibilities.
Another Salem-inspired RWBY headcanon of mine is that the Silver Eye power will actually purify Salem of the effects of the Grimm Pools, thus severing her connection to the Grimm. What I find unique about Salem is that she is a being who has been touched by both light and darkness. Light made her immortal while Darkness gave her reign over the Creatures of Grimm.
If my hunch about the silver eyes being a remnant of the Fountain of Life and Creation is correct then Salem being hit with the power of a Silver Eyed Warrior on full blast; as displayed by Ruby Rose during the Fall of Beacon, might be what finally ‘kills’ the Wicked Witch of the West.
For me, I really like the concept of Ruby’s power cleansing Salem of the effects of the Grimm pools that corrupted her for so many years; reverting the immortal woman back to her original ‘lonely princess’ form from the Lost Fable.
Since the Grimm Pools hypothetically granted Salem the power to control the Grimm, then hypothetically the Silver Eyes---a power born from the Fountain of Light and Creation that negates darkness--- could potentially Salem’s connection to the pools thus severing her connection to the Grimm. Therefore Salem will no longer be able to command the Grimm. I think that a huge part of Salem being a threat to humanity stemmed from her sovereignty over the Grimm. She was even described as being their leader by Raven Branwen during V5.
“…I know the Grimm have a leader…”
That being said, if Salem’s power over the Grimm is taken away---if Salem is changed back to her former self then she’ll no longer be that big of a threat anymore because the thing that gave her reign will be gone for good. Salem the Lonely Princess may return but the Salem the Wicked Witch would be gone for good. Therefore---DING! DONG! The Wicked Witch whose ancient presence haunted Remnant for years will finally be dead!
As for the fate of the original Salem, I’m still sticking to my guns on her receiving a redemption arc since according to the Lost Fable, Salem learning the error of her ways is the only way for her to lift her curse; allowing her to finally die peacefully.
The God of Light said just that. In the Lost Fable, the Brother Gods told Salem that the only way for her to reverse her curse is to learn how to value life.
“…When you first came to me, I did pity you. But it is clear now that your selfishness and arrogance have led you astray.”
“What did you do to me?”
“I have made you immortal.”
“Immortal?”
“You cannot die. You cannot be with your beloved.”
“So long as this world turns, you shall walk its face.”
“You must learn the importance of life and death. Only then may you rest.”
That is a lesson that Salem still has to learn and it honestly won’t surprise me if her story wouldn’t officially conclude until she realises the very message the Brother Gods tried to impart on her. That’s my deduction with that.
So to conclude and reiterate my answer to your question---I’d like to think that the final question of the Lamp of Knowledge will definitely be asked by Ruby. Her brief moment with Jinn from the V6 finale where Jinn warned her about summoning her without a question makes me believe that we will get a call-back to this at some point later in the story (hopefully).
Y’know what’s funny? I think in some odd way, Ruby already knows or has somehow figured out the answer to stop Salem herself. A part of me thinks that the one question Ruby both secretly wants and is dreading to have asked of Jinn is “Who can stop Salem?” because in a weird way, I think she already knows in her heart the answer and is fearing its reveal in a sense. Maybe.
In the RWBY Theme ‘Red Like Roses Part II’, there are two lines of the lyrics sung from both Summer and Ruby’s perspectives that makes me think this:
For Summer it was “…I didn’t have a choice. I did what I had to do. I made a sacrifice, but forced a bigger sacrifice on you…”
And for Ruby’s side it was “…I know you didn't plan this. You tried to do what's right. But in the middle of this madness, I'm the one you left to win this fight…”
“…I made a sacrifice, but forced a bigger sacrifice on you…” “…I'm the one you left to win this fight…”
Knowing what I know now in regards to RWBY’s ongoing story, these lines really resonate with me. I know we were told not to take the RWBY themes seriously in respect to the story. However Red Like Roses Part II technically is the first and only RWBY theme where we actually got a sense of Summer Rose as a character.
It’s the closest thing I have right now to knowing anything about her personality outside of the little things that other characters have sparingly said about her over the seasons and in the expanded universe novelizations.
Going off of this alone, I think what I can deduce is that Summer Rose made the choice to go after Salem herself in an attempt to stop her once and for all on her own. However Summer failed in killing Salem but not without leaving a last imprint that might just spark the key to ending the witch’s reign.
And soon, Ruby Rose will basically have to pick up where her mother left off. This is why I like the idea of Summer causing Salem’s scars. I think Summer set out to stop Salem by herself and unlike other Silver Eyed Warriors before her, Summer is the ONLY ONE who came close to actually stopping Salem. Not that she lived long enough to reveal this truth---a truth that will be revealed in time by Jinn (possibly).
And now Ruby, as Summer’s daughter and heir is left to take over where her mother left off and finish the job in a sense. At least that’s my hunch.
Not quite sure if this long response post actually answered your questions Crystal but, like always I hope it does and feel free to please let me know if it does, fam.

Do you think Ozpin still loves Salem? Or do you think it's possible he's given up hope for her and is simply in mourning of the life they had?
I’mglad you asked anon-chan since this is something I’ve pondered about sincethe third episode reveal. In all honesty, yes, I do think Oz still loves Salem. Absolutely.
Somefans have pointed out that the tower where Ozma originally rescued Salem fromresembles BeaconAcademy and I don’t blame them. I thoughtthe same thing too when I first saw it. This would mean that after everythingthat happened, Ozpin returned to the tower where he originally found his loveand turned it into something good. While the Lonely Tower was originally a domainmeant to oppress the young Salem, Ozpin turned into one of the four academiesto train the world’s protectors. A symbol of hope when it was once used torepresent the prison of a lonely maiden.
I’ma fan of the theory where Oz returned to the lonely tower and the room where hediscovered Salem was ultimately transformed into his previous office when he becameheadmaster of Beacon. The tower is a lingering remnant of the place Oz met thelove of his life and he obviously cherished it until Salem destroyed it.
Ithink Oz has mostly kept himself distracted with his task at stopping the Gods’Judgement from happening while keeping humanity at peace. You can say he’sbasically preoccupied himself with his responsibilities so he wouldn’thave to return to that deep dark pit of despair where he’s reminded of the loveand family he’s lost.
Iactually think it’s a bit of everything anon. Deep down Ozpin still very much loves Salemand I’d imagine it’s something he hasn’t gotten over, just pushed to the depthsof his heart so he wouldn’t have to remind himself of that pain. Salem wasn’tjust the love of his life but she was his companion in life, his partner, his wife, the mother of his children and regardless of how things turned out in theend---I’d like to believe that not all of Ozpin’stime with Salem, both before the Brother Gods and afterwards, were bad. There are probably some very fond memories that Oz has cherished of Salem andthe life they shared together.
Theday they first met and fell in love. The first time they held themselves ineach other’s arms. Their first kiss. The first time they consummated theirrelationship and established themselves as lovers. The day they reunited again in theirsecond lifetimes. The night they consummated their bond as husband and wife. The moment Salem told Oz that she was pregnant with their first child. Thebirth of their first child. Watching their first born daughter grow up and thengoing through this sentiment three times more with the birth of his remainingdaughters. The fond memories he shared with Salem as they connected with theirchildren. All of these are examples of the kinds of good memories Oz must stillharbour in his psyche.
Ozpin’sfirstborn daughter---Blueberry Lollipop---looked to be between the ageof 8 to 10 years old and I’d imagined that her sisters were conceivably borntwo to three years apart from her. So we’re looking at at least eight to tenyears Ozpin lived a happy lifestyle with Salem and their children. You don’tforget memories like that very easily. You don’t forget the love you had nomatter how bad things turned.
Onething I’ve been wondering for a while after V6 C3 is what Oz was trying to sayto Salem after their fight when she overpowered him and said “We finally havefreedom” before burning him alive.
Hestarted off saying something to her---his famous last words, only managing an “I…” before Salem cut him off by literally incineratinghim to death.
Thatscene has been bugging me a bit. What was Oz going to say to Salem in that moment? A part of me wants to think that he was either goingto apologize or say “I love you”. I’dlike to think he was trying to say I love you in spite of everything. Thehopeless romantic shipper in me compels me to think that way about my Tragic Lovers pair.
I’dlike to think that Salem still loves Ozpin too or at least the memory of himthat was still the Ozma she fell in love with. But she’s so clouded by her own rage only amplified by the corruption shereceived from the Grimm Pools that any shred of compassion that Salem mightstill have for Ozma/Ozpin was warped into hatred.
Itmakes me wonder now what Ozpin is doing inside the depths of Oscar’s mind rightnow. Like if we were given a visual representation of Ozpin’s inner mindpalace now that he’s locked himself in Oscar’s head, I’d like to think that he’sprobably trapped himself in some kind of endless illusion wherehe keeps reliving all the fond memories of his life with his family---whenthings were happy. When he was happiest.
Idon’t think that Oz is going to just be magically summoned back in a dire timeof need so easily. A part of me would really love to see Oscar deep dive into his own mind to find Ozpin/Ozma again. I don’tknow how he’s going to do it but perhaps Maria Calavera could aid him in sucha feat. I want the CRWBY to take us into the mind of the Man with Two Souls and takeus on an inception-like journey where Oscar is the oneto save Ozpin and get him to come back.
Perhaps…in doing so, he mighteven meet or is assisted by all the other Ozma incarnates eventually comingface to face with the version of Ozpin he was searching for---Headmaster Ozpinor original Ozma? One of those two or both?
Ireally want Oscar to be the one to save Ozpin and talk/smack some sense intohim. Hug him even. But it has to be the farm boy. No one else. I think it canbe a good journey for Oscar to experience as he learns more about the man he isexpected to become and even himself.
Butresuming talk on Oz and Salem, again, yes. Oz still loves Salem but he probablyhasn’t brought himself to think about her in decades, at least until now thathe’s back in his isolation of grief.

Is it just me or did the kids of one of Ozpin's previous incarnations (Dadpin 2.0?) have silver eyes? Could that be one of the other possible reasons why he took such an interest in Summer Rose & Ruby? Not only because those with silver eyes could defeat/kill grimm, but also because they kind of reminded him of one of the families he ended up having?
Okayso I actually had to go back and rewatch this scene and…I think you might beright? It’s really hard to tell because of the lighting in the scene.
I’malready seeing theories buzzing around about this but here’s my 2cents. Okay, Isee where people might be going with this but I actually have two speculationsabout this before I’m quick to jump on this bandwagon too.
Myfirst speculation is the obviously one--- that DadPIN’s children aren’t SilverEyed Warriors like Ruby and their eyes are actually either a grey or grey-brown or warm light brown.I’d like to believe that there is a differentiation between those with silvereyes and those with regular grey eyes that could easily be mistaken for silverat first glance. I did my best to do a colour comparison between these two kidsand Ruby’s eyes. I found two of the warmest close-up screenshot of Ruby I couldpull up---one taken from the Yang V5 Trailer short and the other from V5 C5 to kind of match the lighting of V6 screenshot, where you can get a clear look at her eyes.
I then took a colour swap to see ifthe kids match up with Ruby’s. For the most part, just going off of this, theykind of do but at the same time don’t because Ruby’s eyes appear to be lighterin warmer shots. The boy’s eyes appears to be closer to Ruby’s eye colour in direct sunlight but....I dunno.
Thisis not the best example to show to debunk this theory but…myanalogy is that DadPin’s kids have regular grey eyes or light brown eyes. NotSilver. However, like I said, that’s just one hunch.
Mynext hunch is that one of DadPin’s kids is actually a very young Maria Calaverafrom when she was a little girl.
The little boy is her brother but unlikeMaria, he’s not a Silver Eye but Maria was but she didn’t realize her powersuntil late into her adult years after her father, DadPin 2.0 had passed. Idoubt this is canon or even makes sense but it would be an interesting twist ifOzpin was connected to Maria’s father at one point.
Itcould give Maria a stronger connection to Oscar since…thesoul inside his body used to be attached to Maria’s papito. Although a part ofme thinks that Ozma must’ve connected to DadPin 2.0 when he was an adult andalready had a family rather than Ozma having another family through DadPin 2.0.And do you know what would be even cooler if this is true? If Maria, beingDadPin’s daughter actually knew of the othersoul inside her father’s body since Maria had a secret power that no one knew about.
Like Haley Joel Osment in the Sixth Sense, what if...as a child, Maria could see dead people. Sowhen Maria was a little girl, she saw the other soul inside her father but keptit a secret since her father never told their family about Ozma …until one day,Maria couldn’t see the other soul anymore because by that time, Ozma had fullyfused with DadPin.
Thatcould be interesting. But for now, like many things, it’s just a hunch.

Gelato is the ship between Neo and Roman, but I don't know about Combat Goggles. I think it's Yang x Neptune. Which I ship myself, because of the cool girl/uncool guy dynamic.

I agree with Rosegarden and the between of Blacksun and bumblebee wholeheartedly!

“On the subject of RWBY Ships, I ship Rosegarden (they're just so precious), Renora (been shipping them together since v1), Jaded (their back & forth banter is amusing to watch), & Gelato (Torchwick showing worry for Neo in v3, then fighting Ruby even more ferociously afterward basically made me like the ship even more). I also kinda have a softpot for Illia x Blake (I love how Illia didn't resent Blake for loving someone else & how she was so focused on helping her people no matter what)”
Squiggles Answers:
Thanks for clarifying the ships for me Mojo, Yellow and Nite. Appreciate it. Funnily enough, I thought Roman and Neo’s ship was called Froyo for some reason. Blame it on RWBY Chibi.
RWBY Chibi made me appreciate the Gelato ship. Their relationship dynamic in the Chibi-verse is too cute especially with how eagerly devoted Neo is to Roman. I loved the episode with the red button where Roman ends up falling into a black hole and Neo’s all like “He’s a dum-dum but he’s my dum-dum” before jumping in to join him.
I thought that was adorable. Gelato in the Chibi-verse is win-win in my books.
Ooooh yeah, I forgot that Yang and Neptune had a ship too. If that’s the case then I used to like Combat Goggles as well. Back when Neptune was introduced in V2, ever since the ‘Paint the Town’ episode where Neptune was paired with Yang, I liked how Yang and Neptune looked together.
While they lacked any kind of romantic chemistry, still thought they looked cool. I even did a little fanart of them together once because I thought they looked so cool side by side. Aaah good times.
Combat Goggles was part of Past Squiggles along with the time I considered shipping Lancaster and…begrudgingly Team RWBY with Team CRDL. Now before you thwack me, let me explain.
Back in Volume 1, when I first got into RWBY and was still getting used to the characters, I considered Jaune and Ruby because Jaune was technically the first person to reach out to Ruby and from there, I always liked their rapport as the two leaders of our two main teams.
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to ship them. I was more like, “Well, if things don’t work out for Jaune with Weiss or Pyrhha then Ruby would be my third option.”
At the time, I wasn’t sure if romance was in the cards for these two but for the first volume, I saw Ruby as Jaune’s backup love interest in a sense. But that was since RWBY V1 days. I don’t think about Ruby and Jaune’s relationship like that anymore and you can tell that the main canon series is more or less setting up Jaune and Ruby caring about each other like family. Jaune is the big brother figure in Ruby’s life and was the proxy replacement for Yang during V4 and V5. And Ruby is like a little sister to Jaune. He obviously cares a lot about her but not in way that screams anything beyond platonic and mutual respect. This is only my opinion though. No disrespect for the proud Lancaster shippers.
As for CRDL and RWBY---Again, wayyyy back in V1 when we got our first glimpse of Team CRDL during the ceremony when the teams were being formed by Ozpin, I actually thought CRDL, as the main all boys team would be paired with RWBY.
I thought the series might pull a Winx Club---y’know where the main all girls team would be paired off with the members of the main all male team like how it was with the Fairies of the Winx Club and the Specialists team.
BOY WAS I WRONG! I thought that was going to be the case…up until the episode afterwards where CRDL were revealed to all be a bunch of irredeemable jerks that would bully Jaune and harass poor Velvet for being a Faunus. It’s a stain on my past as a RWBY shipper. One that I can shamelessly admit now. But hey, I was young and still getting into RWBY back when all it had was the one first season. Mistakes were made.
@lookyeekiti and @niteangel496 Damn skippy RoseGarden = love! Joooooooin me brothers and sisters! I honestly have high hopes for Ruby and Oscar’s friendship. Though I’m still unclear if the CRWBY Writers plan on getting romantic with these two younglings, it’s a concept I welcome because, for me, it’s refreshing to see Ruby getting attention from a young boy closer to her age that isn’t just purely companionable; if y’know what I mean.
Oscar was hinted at having a crush on Ruby last volume so I’m really hoping that, even with all the madness to come from this new volume with the journey to Argus, the show still takes the opportunity to highlight this aspect of Oscar’s feelings towards Ruby. If RWBY is an anime then in true anime fashion, I want some deep blushing moments where Ruby smiles or just breathes in Oscar’s direction and his whole face turns into a spotted tomato.
Bonus points if Maria Calavera picks up on Oscar’s crush on Ruby and boldly designates herself as his wing women; playing matchmaker by constantly creating opportunities where Oscar and Ruby can be alone or at least closer to each other. It doesn’t need to be on-the nose since, as I said, there’s a lot to come this season for both Ruby and Oscar’s development. But little hints and nods and gabs would be greatly appreciated.
@niteangel496 Ilia and Blake are cool. Speaking of Illia, I hope she and the Belladonnas keep safe this volume. While I’m still unclear on what the CRWBY Writers’ intentions for Adam’s story are this season---hunt down Blake for revenge or…personally target cutting down the New Faunus Brotherhood since the Belladonnas are a part of it along with Ilia in order to hit Blake where it hurts and draw her out to face him. Whatever they decide to do with Adam, I’m concerned for what it will mean for Ilia’s fate.
But for now, let’s only think of the cute moments with Ilia. Speaking of which, can I just say that I really adore Ilia’s new look. I like how it shows off her freckled tum-tum which I find so cute as its covered in spots. I want somebody to poke the freckled tummy, mainly Sun because he totally would.
