I Heard You’re In Town

“Ian, oh my goodness!” Her voice pierced through the sound of the pub crowd, generally jovial, celebrating the game on TV. Ian felt a pair of arms wrap around him and hug him tightly.

He turned towards her on his stool, dropping his phone onto the walnut bar. “Hey R--”

“Dots, this is Ian, my friend,” she interrupted, her voice a little loud for how close they all stood. “I met him when we were both assigned to Bahir Dar, a year or so ago.” Rachel grinned wide, her eyes brighter than usual. “We both worked in the OR.” Her dark hair was pulled into two loose buns with flyaways that framed her face, a familiar hairstyle of hers, and she wore a white t-shirt and jeans.

Ian looked at Rachel appreciatively, even as he tried to hide his surprise -- and his joy -- at seeing her again. “We did.” A grin spread across his face despite himself, and he felt warm, as if he was out in the Ethiopian sun with her again, stealing rides in the agency’s Jeep and browsing marketplaces during downtime. She’d changed in the last six months, but only a little. She’d lost her tan, and maybe her hair was a little longer. She was more relaxed, too, free of the urgency and strain of their rural medical encampment.

The blonde woman in a dress next to her stuck out her hand. “You must be the Ian,” she said, dodging Rachel as she tried to elbow her in the ribs.

“The Ian?” he asked, intrigued. He took a sip of his beer to hide his pleasure. When they’d both returned to the States after their assignment, they’d fallen out of touch.

“It’s nothing,” Rachel said quickly. “This is Dottie. She’s thinking of working with MSF, too. Has an interview.”

“A humanitarian, are ye? Congratulations,” he nodded to her, “For what position?”

“RN.”

“Ye look unsure.”

“I’m not--”

“I think she’s a bit frightened--” Rachel said, interrupting.

“I’m not!”

“--but like I keep telling her, she’ll do great. My brother is a reference, and you know how MSF fawns over him, she’s a shoo-in.”

“Ah, Dr. Hunter. Denny. How is he?” Ian asked, remembering her brother’s friendliness and his ability to make difficult decisions very quickly. Ian had once been part of the team to execute those decisions as a nurse who assisted in his surgeries.

“Oh, he’s fine. A bit tired. But when is he not?” Rachel laughed.

Ian turned to Dottie, trying hard not to think about how close Rachel stood to his knee and how her eyes sparkled in the pub lights. “How do ye know Denny, Dottie?”

“I--”

“She’s only met him once,” Rachel cut in. “I introduced them.” She turned to the bartender and ordered a round of beer for the three of them.

“And ye think that will get past the powers that be? They’ll let all of ye work together?” Ian clicked his tongue, pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to slip into an easy-going conversation with her, despite their time apart.

“No,” said Rachel, not looking at him as she plopped down on the stool next to him. He swiveled so his body angled away from her. He hadn’t expected to run into her here and felt unprepared. She powered on. “But not only is Denny a reference, he’ll actually be there at the interview.”

“What?” Ian and Dottie asked at the same time.

“Mm-hm,” hummed Rachel, taking a sip of the beer that had been brought to her, as if she had all the time in the world to respond to their surprise. “He’s attending the interview. Well, perhaps not exactly,” she said, reconsidering, “but he might… pop in.”

“What? You’re kidding!” Dottie rounded on Rachel. Clearly, there was a history there that Ian wasn’t aware of, and he watched the pair closely.

“Well,” Rachel hedged, casting about for an explanation. “I thought you guys hit it off really well the last time you saw him, and thought, you know, it might be convenient to…” she trailed off, met Dottie’s eyes, and flinched. “Dottie, you know you liked him! When you met him, the last time he was in town. God, you guys couldn’t keep away from each other.”

Red in the face, Dottie sputtered as if to deny it, but Ian saw her laughing at herself.

“Oh, you don’t?” asked Rachel, knowingly. “It wasn’t you, then, constantly asking me why I think Denny followed you on Instagram? It wasn’t you that asked me why he might’ve liked this post or that, and who, at one point, wanted to know if it would be appropriate to ‘pop in’ to the coffee shop he said he was at when he was working on that paper? Or how to exactly word your text messages to him when you finally got brave enough, hm?” Her voice rang with certainty, nearly shouting now. She exploded into a burst of laughter at Dottie’s horrified face. “You should see yourself, Dots, you’re smitten! Smitten kitten! Isn’t that right, Ian?”

“Rachel, be chill, for Christ’s sake!” Dottie exclaimed.

Rachel turned to him, her face radiant with laughter and the teasing of her friend. “Don’t you think so, Ian?” she asked again when he didn’t answer.

“Well, I…” Ian hesitated, his eyes darting between Dottie’s anguished embarrassment and Rachel’s sparkling hilarity. “I can’t possibly know.”

Rachel sighed, her mood swiftly changing to something wistful. “Denny and Dottie… You guys would be so perfect together. And we’d be sisters!”

“Rachel,” Dottie hissed, though she smiled wide. “Hush, you’re ruining this.”

“So let me get this straight,” Ian said, leaning back on the bar now. Dottie still stood in front of him. “You both flew all the way from North Carolina to New York, just to feign interest in MSF, just so you can hook up with Denny?”

Both the women looked at him with disgust.

“How dare you, I am a nurse that cares--”

“Dottie is very good at what she does--”

“Alright, alright, calm down.” He rolled his eyes at them and switched gears. “So if you were to get in, where would ye want to be assigned?”

“Well,” Dottie said, “it doesn’t really matter to me. But I’m fluent in French so probably somewhere in Northern Africa, like Niger or something.”

“Mm, or Haiti,” he added.

”Wherever they need me, I’d be happy to work.” Dottie grinned, and Ian saw how the blonde hair, pale eyes, and soft features might strike someone like Denny. “I’m not an OR nurse like you guys; I don’t know how you stomach all the blood.”

“I don’t know how you stomach how your patients can still talk to you,” Rachel quipped, eliciting a startled laugh from Ian.

“There’s blood in your work, too,” Ian said to Dottie, happy to have an excuse not to look at Rachel. She was humming quietly beside him. He was attuned to her like he always had been, like something shimmered in the air around her that only he could see.

“Yuck, but not that much.” She made a face before she pulled her phone out of her pocket. “Oh my god!” she gasped, immediately showing the phone to Rachel, who grinned mischievously.

“Yes!”

“What?” asked Ian, feeling a bit dumb.

“Denny,” the women breathed together, their heads bent over Dottie’s phone. Their faces glowed in the light from the screen as they tittered together.

“It buzzed, just now,” Dottie said breathlessly.

Rachel grinned. “That means he was thinking of you!”

“Of course it does, Rachel, don’t be silly, he can’t text me and not be thinking of me.”

“Oh, Dots! You and Denny! It’s really happening!”

“Nothing is happening, Rach, will you quit it?”

“‘Nothing is happening’? You can’t be serious.”

“But what does it mean?”

“What’s it say?” Ian cut in, unable to help himself.

“‘Dottie, I heard you’re in town, I’m in town too,’” Dottie read. She paused. “That’s it.”

“It means he’d like to see you,” replied Ian. “He knows you’re here for your interview.”

“It does? But he doesn’t say that!”

“Er, no.” Ian grimaced. “But Denny’s like that. Awkward, a bit.”

Dottie rounded on Rachel. “Why does your brother have to be so weird?” she nearly wailed. “Rachel, how on earth am I supposed to respond to this?”

Rachel gave an exaggerated shrug. “I don’t know, don’t ask me.”

“He’s your brother!”

“Yeah, but I don’t know how to flirt with him. He’s my brother!”

“You keep pushing us together, and now you won’t help me? Rach!” Dottie looked terrified, Rachel amused.

“Alright, alright.” Ian held up his hands as if he were surrendering. “I’ll help. Gimme.” He made a grabby motion for the phone, and Dottie handed it over.

“Do ye want to respond to this like a booty call or no?” Ian asked, his thumbs poised over the keyboard.

“Booty call?” Dottie asked.

“Well…” He nodded his head toward the front of the bar, where two large windows shone darkly in the night, streetlights were lit, and brake lights at the nearby stop light reflected on the glass. “It’s late. Do ye want to see him tonight?”

Dottie’s eyes flew wide. “No!”

Rachel laughed. Ian loved that sound.

“Aye, okay. Let’s see, then. We’ll be cool and casual.” Dottie and Rachel stood at either shoulder, their heads bent conspiratorially together. “‘What a funny coincidence,’” he narrated as he typed, “‘that we should be in the same city at the same time. What should we do about that, do you think?’”

“Send!” Rachel squealed and Dottie groaned, even as she laughed.

“Fine, fine!” Dottie grabbed the phone and sent the message along without bothering to glance at it. She saw Ian’s surprise and shrugged at him. “Why not?”

Ian laughed. “Glad I’m of some use.”

“You’re of use,” Rachel said, and even in her playful correction, her face was soft and appreciative as she looked at him. She was standing very close to him now, and he nearly backed away with the shock of realizing it.

“What’s this?” Dottie asked, her eyes darting back and forth between them.

“Nothing,” Ian and Rachel said together, but too quickly. They both looked at each other and laughed. Ian felt the strange impulse to embrace her, but he held back, fearing the awkwardness that could so easily spring between them.

“It’s nothing,” Rachel said again, placing a hand on Ian’s arm, the touch so brief he might have imagined it. “C’mon, Dottie, we should go.” She glanced back at Ian. “I’ll be in touch,” she said to him. “See you soon?”

She was still standing close to him, perhaps she had stepped even closer without him realizing it; he could feel the warmth of her, even in the crowded bar. Maybe it was just the beer. “I’ll be here.”

She smiled, and he wanted to kiss her, but before he knew it, she was gone as quickly as she had arrived, tugging an astonished Dottie away by the elbow.

Later that night, when Rachel was tucked into the starchy sheets of her hotel bed, her phone lit up with a notification that made her heart leap: Rachel, I heard you’re in town. I’m in town, too.

Synopsis: With new powers, Thor now living on Earth full time, a wedding to plan, and Natasha and Wanda expecting, a lot is changing for Elly and her large and rather unconventional family. When Elise’s parents try to reestablish connections, Elly questions what being a family actually means.

Chapter 20: The Road to Forgiveness

I organized to meet my mother for lunch a week later. Natasha, Wanda, and Thor came with me. There had been a very long discussion full of a lot of debate about who should come with me. If I’d let them they all would have, but I didn’t want the whole thing to be overwhelmed by them. Part of me had wanted to go alone, but then when it came down to it, I was still scared to be left alone with either of my parents. Besides, we were trying to keep the pregnancies out of the tabloids and if I was going to go out in public, I needed to take Natasha with me so they couldn’t see me.

Wanda came so that she could read my mother’s mind, to see if she was genuine in her attempts to shake off my father and start a new life and relationship with me. While, Thor was coming because he had that ability to both be a calming and relaxing influence, but also intimidating if need be.

We thought we’d grab lunch somewhere with a private dining room that we could just be free to talk without too many prying eyes. Then afterward we’d go shopping for baby clothes and maybe something for ourselves.

We were all well and truly showing now, and I did worry about how mom would take the news that all three of us were pregnant. Natasha wore a short, black maternity dress with knee-length black leggings underneath and a chain belt that sat above the baby bump that’s chain hung down her side. Wanda was in a long, flowing, off-the-shoulder, lace dress in cream with red flowers embroidered on the bust and around the hems. I was in a short black dress with a blue tartan skirt and a pair of black lace tights under it. Thor was in black jeans, a gray v-neck t-shirt, and his favorite red velvet jacket over it. When we suddenly appeared in front of the staff of the restaurant they almost jumped in shock. That shock was quickly replaced with a look of slight awe and definitely attraction as they looked Thor up and down.

Mom was already waiting for us when we were led into the private room. She was with my brother Ian and a small, slight woman around his age that I didn’t recognize but I assumed must be his wife because there were two kids there too - a girl who looked around eight years old and a boy around five.

Mom got to her feet and seemed to move forward like she was going to come and greet me with a hug, before stopping dead and looking me up and down. “Elise! You’re pregnant!”

“I am?” I said, looking down at myself. “Oh wow. I guess I am.”

She gave me that look moms are so good at. The ones that tell you that you’re not as funny as you think you are. To her credit, she didn’t press the issue.

“Congratulations,” she said. “And both of you too?”

Natasha gave a terse nod, while Wanda smiled. “That’s right,” she said.

“Mom, you met Wanda,” I say. “And this is Natasha and Thor.”

Thor offered her his hand. She seemed grateful to take it. “It’s nice to meet you,” you said.

Ian moved forward. “Hey, El,” he said. “This is my wife Rachel.” Despite not having touched either of the people that were related to me, I offered my hand to Rachel. She shook it and trembled a little as she did.

“So nice to meet you. Ian said you were his sister and I didn’t believe him,” she said.

“Well, we’ve not had a lot of contact over the last fifteen or so years,” I said.

“Oh, this is Josh and Hannah,” she said.

“Hello,” I said, though their attention was completely drawn to Thor. They stared up at him with their mouths open.

He crouched down and smiled warmly at them. “Hello, children,” he said. “How are you?”

“I hope you don’t mind us coming along too,” Ian said. “We came to visit mom and then your people set up the lunch…”

“It’s fine,” I assured him. “It’s good to see you. Let’s sit. I’d really like to get off my feet.”

We all sat down, the kids both choosing chairs on either side of Thor. A waiter took our drink orders and left us to decide what we would order.

“How are your kids? You have two right? I read that somewhere,” Rachel asked.

“Yes, we have twins. A boy and a girl. They’re in preschool right now,” I answered. While everyone else seemed to be relaxing a little more, Natasha seemed to be getting more wound up and I was wondering if it was a good idea to bring her. “They’re good.”

Wanda looked at Natasha and Natasha pursed her lips. I was pretty certain that Wanda was telling her off because as the rest of us looked over the menu and Thor spoke with the kids about what they wanted to order Natasha’s face got tenser and tenser until she sagged and let out a huff of breath.

The waiter brought our drinks out and took our orders. I ordered four cheese gnocchi but as soon as the waiter left I regretted it. I wasn’t sure how well I was going to be able to stomach such a heavy dish considering the circumstances. Thankfully Thor ordered four different entrees and three starters, and among them was a salad and bruschetta so if I needed to, I knew I’d be able to swap with him.

“How have things been going, mom?” I asked. “They told me you’ve settled here.”

“Yes,” Mom said. “It’s a big change. Originally I was just going to stay in Ohio with Amanda but then part of me worried that if I did that I’d end up just going back to him. And I wanted to show you I was serious and make it up to you. I missed so much and I know ... I know how I treated you - all of you really - was terrible. Making you think it was okay for him to treat us like that. Making you think that was the only way to have a life. I don’t want to make excuses but it was all I knew either. And now here you are… with this other way. Are you happy?”

I smiled a little and my eyes felt a slight prickle from tears forming. “Yeah, mom. I’m really happy. This is different, you’re right. And sometimes it’s not easy. But while most people see the difference as us all being together as a group rather than just paired off, what’s different to me is I feel safe, loved, and supported. Even during our worst time, I had people who loved and supported me there helping me get through it. I just… never felt that growing up. I was scared all the time and I couldn’t see any way that would ever end, because you kept telling me all the ways I had to act to get a good husband, but a good husband wasn’t a good man, it was a rich one.”

“I know. I’m sorry. I want to try and make it up to you,” mom said. “But I know I can’t. I just hope you’ll let us start from scratch.”

“That’s what I’m hoping for too,” I said.

“Is it true that you’re all married to each other?” Hannah asked.

“That’s right, young one,” Thor said. “In fact for a while, your Aunt was the Queen of Asgard.”

“Woah,” Hannah gasped. “Really? Why not anymore?”

“After we wed I gave up the throne to my sister. She is taking care of things now so I have time to be a husband and father,” Thor explained.

“Are you really all married? I mean… officially?” Mom asked, looking between the three of us.

“As you know, on Earth Elise is legally married to Tony,” Wanda explained. “We did that for a sense of security and to protect the children’s inheritance. But prior to that, we all participated in a ceremony known as bonding on Asgard.”

“Asgard is more forward-thinking than here,” Thor added. “They are all legally my spouses and count as Asgard royalty. They are all princes and princesses there. It is much deeper too. We are connected.”

The starter came out and I pinched one of Thor’s stuffed mushrooms and began to eat it with a piece of warm rye bread that was provided for the table. I definitely wasn’t as tense as I had been when I arrived but even still, the rich buttery stuffing on the mushroom sat like a brick inside me when I swallowed it.

“Can I ask something?” Mom said. “I don’t know if this is offensive or rude but… do you know who the fathers of the children are?”

I sighed and took a sip of my drink, wishing the sweet and acidic juice had the deep burn of alcohol to go with it. “They’re everyone’s mom. Just like I’m going to be mommy to the babies that Wanda and Nat are carrying.”

“No,” she said, a little flustered. “I know, but…”

I shook my head, interrupting her. “Look, I know it’s different, and maybe even hard for you to grasp because you did play favorites. But we don’t. Not with these kids. We do happen to know biology. Part of that was because of medical issues that might have arisen depending on whose biology was involved. But as far as how we act and how we treat the kids, they are loved equally by everyone as their own. Because they are. That is no one’s business but ours. And I want to make it clear, they could biologically have been anyone’s. We aren’t confused friends, mom. They’re my husbands and wives in every sense of the word.”

“Right,” she said. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay,” I said. “I do want you to feel okay around us. But… not if we have to fit some ideal you still have set in your head about how my life should be. It is how it is and if you want to meet the others and even the kids then you just have to be open to that difference.”

“Can we meet the other avengers?” Hannah asked.

“Perhaps someday,” Thor said. “I am sure your cousins would love to meet you too.”

“Thor,” Natasha warned, giving her head a tiny shake.

“Does that mean you’re our uncle?” Hannah asked.

A large smile broke out on Thor’s face. “Why yes it does,” he said.

“I’ve got a safer topic of discussion, and one Rachel and I can reciprocate,” Ian said. “How did you all meet and start seeing each other in the first place?”

“Oh, yes please,” Rachel added. “I would love to hear that.”

I smiled and looked at Natasha. “That we can do,” I said. “But it depends on how far back you want to go. Because it really starts way back in 1929…”

Ian and Rachel

“Mo chridhe,” he said, and breathed for the first time since he’d touched her. Mohawk came next, deep and visceral. I need you . And tagging belatedly, English, the one best suited to apology. “I—I’m sorry.”

She nodded, jerky as a puppet.

“Yes. I—yes.”

He should leave; she was afraid. He knew that. But he knew something else, too. It wasn’t him she was afraid of. Slowly, slowly, he put out a hand to her, the fingers moving without his will, slowly, as though to guddle a trout.

And by an expected miracle, but miracle nonetheless, her hand stole out toward his, trembling. He touched the tips of her fingers, found them cold. His own were warm, he would warm her.… In his mind, he felt the chill of her flesh against his own, noted the nipples hard against the cloth of her dress and felt the small round weight of her breasts, cold in his hands, the press of her thighs, chill and hard against his heat.

He was gripping her hand, drawing her back. And she was coming, boneless, helpless, drawn to his heat.

“Thee must not,” she whispered, barely audible. “We must not.”

It came to him dimly that of course he could not simply draw her to him, sink to the earth, push her garments out of the way, and have her, though every fiber of his being demanded that he do just that. Some faint memory of civilization asserted itself, though, and he grabbed for it. At the same time, with a terrible reluctance, he released her hand.

“No, of course,” he said, in perfect English. “Of course we mustn’t.”

“I—thee—” She swallowed and ran the back of her hand across her lips. Not as though to wipe away his kiss, but in astonishment, he thought. “Does thee know—” She stopped dead, helpless, and stared at him.

“I’m not worried about whether ye love me,” he said, and knew he spoke the truth. “Not now. I’m worried about whether ye might die because ye do.”

“Thee has a cheek! I didn’t say I loved thee.”

He looked at her then, and something moved in his chest. It might have been laughter. It might not.

“A great deal better ye don’t,” he said softly. “I’m no a fool, and neither are you.”

She made an impulsive gesture toward him, and he drew back, just a hair.

“I think ye’d best not touch me, lass,” he said, still staring intently into her eyes, the color of cress under rushing water. “Because if ye do, I’ll take ye, here and now. And then it’s too late for us both, isn’t it?”

Her hand hung in the air, and while he could see her willing it, she could not draw it back.

He turned from her then and went out into the night, his skin so hot that the night air turned to steam as it touched him.

Thank you so much for dropping in! I have a confession, Rachel is one of my least favorite characters….ever. Maybe it’s the way DG writes her, idk. She bothers me to no end. Perhaps it’s her incessant use of the word “friend.” I felt like she was never good enough for Young Ian. In my opinion, she wants to change him too much and I don’t think she understands him, nor do I think she fully respects him, his upbringing or religion(s).

With that being said, I took a step out of my comfort zone to give you this little drabble set in the Mo Chridhe universe. I do hope you enjoy!

“Ian! When did ye get here lad?” Jamie said, pulling his nephew into a hug and thumping him on the back.

“This morning,” he responded, a hand holding the back of his head. “I’m dog tired, Uncle. Do ye have a place I can sneak a quick lie in?”

Jamie looked puzzled but guided Ian back to his office, and pointed to the lumpy, paper-strewn couch. “It’s no much, but it’ll do. Have ye no gone to the house? I ken we’re a noisy lot, but Claire would have kept them quiet long enough for ye to get yer bearings straight.”

Ian laughed and shook his head. “I havena gone over there, no. Mam said to come straight to the paper and find ye, so that’s where I had the cabbie drop me.”

One hand drug down Jamie’s face in exasperation. “Jaysus. O’course yer Mam wouldna give us any warning and have ye come to work immediately.” Bending over, Jamie cleared away a few loose papers at the same time Ian slumped onto the couch, his head resting on a stack of newsprint.

“I’ll be fine, Uncle. Just give me a few minutes to…” Ian’s eyes drooped shut at the same time his words ended.

“Mr. Fraser!” A loud, high-pitched squeal shook Ian from his uneasy slumber.

“Oh!” The girl said a hand clapped over her mouth. “I’m so sorry. I was looking for Mr. Fraser.”

“Uncle Jamie, aye. I heard ye.” They said simultaneously.

“I dinna ken where he is at the moment, but I’m sure ye can find him about.”

“Right. I’m sorry really. I didn’t know anyone else might have been in here, let alone take a nap.”

Ian smiled at her, his bleary eyes starting to focus. The girl that stood before him made his heart skip, and a cold sweat broke out on his palms. He gulped, trying to wet his now dry throat.

“I should…” she pointed to the door.

“Wait!” Ian stumbled off of the couch and caught her wrist. “I didna catch yer name.”

She smiled brightly at him, stuck her hand out and said, “My name is Rachel, Rachel Hunter.”

He grabbed her hand and never wanted to let go. “Nice to meet ye Miss Hunter, my name is Ian Murray.”

The muns’ minds are always busy with new characters so here’s an introduction to the characters you’ll be seeing in our stories or have already come across them.

Lance Emerson

Face claim: Julian McMahon

Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Lance’s childhood was comfortable and filled with privilege. His mother was the COO (chief operator officer) of a corporation, and his father a traveling businessman—both came from well-to-do backgrounds. Lance was the first-born son out of five children and was the clear favorite. Living in a gated community, he attended the most prestigious private schools the country had to offer. Money was never an issue for him or his siblings, but he was well aware that his parents gave him the biggest allowance of them all, and he had more freedom to do whatever he wished. He developed an aggressive and superficially passionate charisma that drew people to him like moths to a flame. This gained him plenty of followers who admired his sharp wit and business perception that he learned from his parents.

Rory Hawthorne

Face claim: Jensen Ackles

The biological brother of Leon, Rory was only five years old when he lost his life. Both boys carried the skin-walker gene, but only one of them would be allowed to embrace it; the other had to die.

Rory's young soul was sent to Purgatory, when he was forced to quickly adapt to a strange, dark world where only the strong survived. After much running and hiding, Rory came across a collective of monsters, lost souls like him. They took him under their wing and taught him how to fight. During this time, Rory was able to adapt to his surroundings and develop his own, unusual powers. The rage he felt toward his own brother had never left him, and thus created malevolent energy within. While his physical body died at the tender age of five, his spiritual body grew into adulthood.

Mason Sawyer

Mason Sawyer was second in command up until the moment Dick Roman met his end by a group of hunters, this sprang Mason forth as the Leviathan’s new Master and leader. He quickly established his dominance over the other Leviathans and began his master plan to convert all humans into livestock for the Leviathans to slaughter and eat.

Number Thirteen is a dhampir, and the biological son of Alan Frog. Rachel was sure that the whisky spices she still felt tingling her tongue were the ones she had stolen from Ian when they had kissed. His taste lingered in her mouth, stimulating her senses and taking her fatigue away, as the fresh summer breeze stirred the day’s heat towards the hills. Her steps were lively again, her feet moving along with his as Ian walked her back home.

They were casual, talking about the distillery, laughing at the contrast between Murtagh’s grumpiness and Jamie’s wide smile. They joked about secretly getting a bed in the warehouse for Ian, one enchanted with spells that would make it disappear with the rising of the sun. Ian nudged her with a cheeky smile and said that this would be the perfect setup. His gaze was intense, and she felt her heart flutter in response to the silent, unuttered words between them.

They were a few blocks from her apartment when through an increasing amount of "accidental" brushes, she found her fingers intertwined with his own.

Her hand seemed small inside his, her fingers too fragile between his long and graceful ones. The way he ran his thumb over her skin required all her self-control to calm her breathing.

There wasn’t enough air.

And just like that, they were standing in front of her door. Rachel debated for a moment whether she should invite him in, but Ian was faster and announced he had to leave. He had to walk Rollo. With all the preparations for the distillery’s event, he’d been running errands all day and his poor dog was waiting for him at home.

They didn’t move, in an infinite moment when the uncertainty of their thundering hearts made them bounce on the balls of their feet. They were standing too close. They were standing too far. It didn’t take long for Ian to eliminate the distance and pull her to him, his teeth instantly capturing her lips between them.

Their kiss was a flame that burned them both. They let it reach deeper and deeper, knowing that it was too early for words to convey their want, their needs of each other. Wishing that their lips were eloquent enough not to allow the doubts and second thoughts prevail.

They spent a long moment just looking at each other when they finally broke their kiss. Basking in the glow of the moment, new colors dancing in their eyes for only them to see.

Rachel traced the side of his face; the strong cheekbone, the soft skin just above his trimmed beard. It was her time to kiss him then, and their lips and tongues spoke a more gentle language, adding new dimensions to the world they’d started creating.

With a final, almost chaste goodnight kiss, he walked away. She saw him fixing his hair in a bun, his t-shirt stretching across his shoulders while doing so, and she smiled, knowing it was her fingers that had messed up his hair. Then, he turned to look at her, and Rachel realized that she hadn’t moved an inch since he left. But Ian just smiled. She smiled back, then turned and climbed the stairs to her apartment.

The moment she hit her bed, her exhaustion and the warmth of Ian’s kisses covered her like a fuzzy blanket smelling of whisky and him.

That Saturday, she slept in.

The morning sunlight caressed the curtains covering Rachel’s windows with timid fingers, as if asking for permission to enter. Its warmth filled the room, and Rachel’s mind grasped a few of the rays, adding them to her dream. She was alone with Ian, walking along a river in the Highlands. It was a cloudy day, and she imagined that a little sunlight might bring out the green in his eyes.

The sun continued its journey in the sky, leaving her smiling in her sleep. When Rachel finally opened her eyes, she half-expected Ian to be next to her. Seeing that she was alone in her room, she tried to fall asleep again, longing to continue the conversation they had in her dream. She closed her eyes and focused on his voice. She tried to bring his eyes in front of her again, but in vain. The dream was gone.

It was well past noon, and her head felt almost as heavy as her feet.

Regretting the absurd amounts of whisky she had consumed the previous night, Rachel checked her phone. For a moment, she panicked, thinking that the previous night was nothing more than her morning walk with Ian by the river. A dream. It took her a moment to realize that Ian hadn’t asked for her number.

For a second, she didn’t breathe.

Then, she inhaled deeply with her eyes closed, and she could almost smell him. The pepper and the cinnamon, and that fruity essence she didn’t have a name for. Everything that was him.

Rachel stayed in bed, going over the details of the previous night. The quiet warehouse, the shared bottle of whisky, the warmth of the glass against her lips moments after it was on his, their first, second, third kiss. Each moment felt special; like he was opening yet another door to let her in. And they were all real.

The day went by in a blur. Having climbed out of bed at 2 pm, there wasn’t much time for Rachel and Denny to finish their weekend to-do list. Denny was excited about the new techniques he was learning at the hospital and Rachel found herself occupied with listening to her brother going on about knee arthroscopy and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Whatever. He was happy and that was enough, even though listening to medical terms for half a day had never been an enjoyable activity for her. After the two of them finished their grocery shopping and cleaned the house, Rachel sank into her bed as tired as the previous night. Only not as blissful.

He had said “See you,” with a mischievous smile before leaving her. And the way he had looked at her just before the night had swallowed him had her almost convinced that he had felt that connection between them too.

But her phone was silent. No missed calls. No messages.

Jamie Fraser had her number. William, too. It wasn’t difficult to get it off of one of them and call her - if he wanted to.

Sunday went by excruciatingly slowly. When Rachel admitted to herself that there was no chance of reading — after holding the book on the same page for almost half an hour — she grabbed her phone and searched for his name on Facebook.

She didn’t have full access to his profile, so there wasn’t much to see there apart from a picture of him and Rollo on a snowy Scottish mountain. With his dark blue hardshell jacket, the beanie and the hood on top of it, she barely recognized him - she wouldn’t, if not for his broad grin. He seemed carefree, happy.

She locked her phone, set it decisively on the coffee table next to her book and looked out the window with her lips pressed into a tight line. A fit of unexplained anger rose up inside of her, making the memory of Ian’s warmth bitter, sharp. Painful.

She wasn’t angry with him. He hadn’t made her any promises. He had kissed her, a night when they were both slightly inebriated. And then, he hadn’t even asked for her number. If he was something, Rachel thought, he was clear and straightforward.

But she was angry at herself, for letting her mind wander into a future vague and unsure. She was never one to run after pink, puffy clouds. She was a sensible type of person, the one who keeps their feet stable on the ground.

Maybe she was too desperate to find something that would bind her to Scotland. Maybe Ian was just a way to convince herself that she hadn’t lost everything after leaving California. That there was something here for her, too.

She checked her phone again. Nothing.

On Monday, Rachel and William would start their first attempt on creating a blend. Jamie thought it a good idea to leave the two of them alone, see what they would come up with. A wee test, he had said. William had rolled his eyes. Rachel had nodded with her lips pressed tight together, searching Fraser’s face for any indication of being genuine or not. He meant it, she had decided.

Rachel entered the building with a smile, carrying two cups of coffee. The smile froze on her lips almost instantly. Ian was there, behind the bar, arranging whisky bottles in a case.

“Morning,” he said softly, his smile quickly piercing the layers of indifference she had carefully constructed.

“Good morning, Rachel.” William’s cheerful voice came from the opposite direction. He was sitting behind the desk with papers scattered all around him.

“Good morning!” Rachel looked at Ian, who hadn’t taken his eyes away from her. When she glanced back at William, she saw that he was walking towards her.

“Let me help you with these,” he said, and took both paper cups from her hands. “Two coffees? Tough morning?” he jested and winked at her.

“I owe you, from the last time,” Rachel explained with a faint blush on her cheeks. “I didn’t know…” she trailed off, looking at Ian apologetically.

“Oh, no worries,” he said with a shrug and moved to lift the case. “I’m leaving anyway,” he added in a slightly more strained voice, the bottles’ weight having an effect on him. “Murtagh is waiting.”

He smiled at her again, and before Rachel could gather her thoughts and say something, he was out of the door.

“See you!”

That stupid see you again. Maybe it was just his way of saying goodbye.

She stood in the middle of the room, staring at the closed door when William grunted behind her. He had returned to the desk and was now looking at the papers with his hand set upon his forehead.

“Can I help?” Rachel asked, trying to think of anything but Ian.

Working would be good. It would be a distraction.

And yet, as Rachel approached the desk, there was nothing in her mind apart from Ian’s smile.

Why look at her like that if their kisses hadn’t meant anything to him?

Maybe she had overreacted about him not calling her, though. It had only been two days, after all.

She helped William with the invoices he had to file and then they focused on the larger task at hand. Neither of them was a master blender — far from it — and the final product of their labour wouldn’t be one to reach the shelves, but it would be judged. They had to take it seriously.

A blend consists of anything from fifteen to fifty single malts. And finding which single whiskies to blend meant that they had to characterize each one of them first. With their notebooks in hand, Rachel and William started the tasting of each of Lallybroch’s fine single malt and grain whiskies. First, they noted the dominant characteristic. Fruity, spicy, nutty, smoky. Then, the more specific odors that danced around them. Apple, pear, cinnamon, black pepper, honey, leather, toffee, vanilla, almond - whatever hit their olfactory receptors was transferred onto the paper in front of them.

Whisky was a challenge for Rachel. It was intriguing and creative. It made her think. What was the essence of each whisky? What characteristics she would keep? How she would accentuate the stronger points? How she would hide the weaknesses?

Each whisky had a character - it didn’t always get along with all the rest. Like people, more or less.

And Rachel found that working with William was fun. Were they a blend, she’d describe it as smooth, easy in the mouth. He was patient with her, always explaining the bits she didn’t know, filling the gaps created by her limited reading and her non-existent experience. He was kind and smart. Just like his father, he made Rachel care for the whisky, for the distillery.

The sun was setting when they locked the door behind them. William invited her to dinner, but Rachel was looking forward to going home, slipping into her pyjamas and relaxing with a book.

She was on her way to do just that, when her phone vibrated inside her pocket.
