hello hello hello!
can i please ask for your general thoughts on horses and other creatures of that nature. like as many thoughts as you have
thank you, you are wonderful! (also no pressure to answer this! I just felt like sending it!)
OH MY GOD YES. I'm just gonna let my mind wander so sorry if this turns out to be obscenely long
Ok so I did horse riding/training for several years when I was younger (western style, like cowgirl/cowboy stuff, in a small town) but haven't been able to get back to it since I started college and transed my gender so most of my horse thoughts are contained within MISSING THEM TERRIBLY and I hope I can be around them again soon because they are seriously so good for my mental health. Anyway.
I absolutely love horses. The thing about working with them is that you aren't trying to control them necessarily, you're trying to communicate with them. The way I was taught was about showing them that everyone's happier when the two of you are cooperating rather than fighting, which of course goes both ways. You have to listen to the horse just as much as the horse has to listen to you. It's teamwork! And that includes learning a lot about their body language and the way they communicate with each other. It's hard to use horse body language in a human body, so there's a lot of work you have to do with the way you carry yourself and use the energy of your body to get your point across. I had a whole paragraph here about exactly how to tell a horse to start moving from a standstill as an example, but I figured it was a little beside the point so let me know if you want more detail on that!
Horses are really fascinating to me partly because of the communication that happens between them and humans but of course also just for what they are-- they're big, they're social, they're super intelligent (and dumb as rocks at the same time), they've got so much personality, they're incredibly sensitive but can also be incredibly tough. They may or may not know where their feet are. They're constantly talking to each other. They spook at the same wheelbarrow in the yard every time they pass it. They can always find their way home. They could kick you while you're braiding their tail but they don't. They fall asleep standing up. They puff themselves up so you can't make the saddle too tight. They eat apples off the tree and play with giant toys if given the opportunity and munch on your clothes. They're stinky and dirty and full of love!
If anybody ever wants to ask me anything about horses or just talk about them you're totally welcome to. I don't profess to be an expert and a lot of training stuff is very relative but I'm autistic about these animals and again I'm missing them lately so it's fun!

"My head's been wet with the midnight dew
I've been down on bended knee
Talkin' to the Man from Galilee
He spoke to me in the voice so sweet
I thought I heard the shuffle of angel's feet
He called my name and my heart stood still
When he said,
'John, go do my will!'"
