as someone who only ever played the ds version of spore, is there a limit to how many parts you can have on a creature, or is it more of a "you're only allowed x amount of limbs/decorations per space" type deal. or is there just. no limit whatsoever
on pc spore, the hard limit is 255 parts. limbs start freaking out once you add a certain amount or size of limbs or feet/hands, but the maximum amount of feet i've found are accepted by the game is 40. usually less. after this, you get some polygon vomit
if you add even more it can even do this. the limbs and spine will cease animating as the game just barely tries to hold it together
typically you're limited by the in-game complexity meter for sharing and vanilla gameplay, but there's a fair amount of mods that completely disable the complexity meter and leave that entirely up to you as the player. animated parts [mouths, etc] take up more complexity on the creature while decoration parts [knurls, etc] are more lenient.
that being said, spore is held together with scotch tape and dreams but it sure as hell will keep itself that way for as long as physically possible within the game's engine. it has no reason within normal gameplay to be able to handle creatures this complex, but it's still built to take it Just In Case

The fact you put the year spore released in your blog title made me realize I’m only older than spore by a matter of months

idk if you answered this before, but what kind of version of spore do you use for modding it? a ripped version, through steam, or EA? i want to try it myself :)
steam, but GOG is usually considered the best version for modding. not that steam is bad mind you, it's fine now, but the folks in smc usually recommend GOG.
absolutely do not use a pirated or cracked version of spore for mods, btw. piracy is cool as fuck, but mods are famously unstable on cracked [and out of date] versions of spore.

Happy pride, everyone! I made a joke about my embroidery and now I've made it reality.
Want to use this as an icon? Consider tossing me, an unemployed trans person, a kofi donation! I'm still looking for a job and in the meantime any support at all really helps me to keep stitching projects.

Who are you?
There's actually two of us! @ejsuperstar and @user-without-a-cool-acronym!
(EJ): I'm a fanartist who really likes Heroforge! I enjoy making characters from fandoms I'm in it! My tag for my posts is #ej posts
(User): I‘m mostly just a fandom blog who likes making their own and others‘ Blorbos in heroforge<3 My posts are tagged #user posts
Why do this?
Well @making-you-in-spore mentioned how they were surprised no one did this yet, and we both were like "we should do that", so we've teamed up to bring you even more Heroforges!
Can I request a Heroforge?
As of rn: Sure! It might take a bit to get to them, but requests are open rn!
#the making you ecosystem#not spore#GREAT news for heroheads#go follow them#this is our first collaborative friend too

i have created a sideblog where i will archive information and guides hosted solely on the SMC discord, with admin sneaky_zucchini's blessing:
@resporeces
not only will this archive SMC discord messages, but also guides and resources i myself have made.
this page will host a large amount of spore-related guides and easy links to them. this of course is a large project, so it may take a while to get through all of it.
regarding the last ask, i am currently concepting a separate sidepage on my blog where i will be hosting a myriad of publicly available spore resources that are provided in the SMC discord! not only will it include modding but it will include a lot of other guides and resources related to spore, such as creature creation and animation guides.
i get a lot of questions about modding/spore-related resources, so i'll be happy to compile a public collection of resources for people to look through.

do you have any advice for someone wanting to get into the spore modding scene for the first time? i loge the character editor in spore and im so fascinated by the stuff i see people make with it when its modded. thanks for your time, happy pride and have a lovely day :]
check out my pinned! there's info for beginners there, though some of it is outdated due to the October2024 certificate update for spore.
lots of things have been happening in the spore modding community lately - davoonline being overrun with spam bots and undergoing maintenance, the spore certificate update, etc. lots of the "status quo" of spore modding has been turned on its head, so if you're not in the know of all of it i recommend either waiting it out for an updated info page, or [as much as i hate saying this] checking out the SMC discord's #info-and-faq channel. i've compiled a few resources below for things you might want to check out when you first start modding spore.
spore modAPI launcher kit [required for all modern mods]
if the launcher fails to update, follow these steps:
linked download in the message above
paranoid has a list of mod recommendations here. lots of these are not listed on my pinned.
here is the SMC spore mod browser [be patient, it's a large website and takes a while to load]
i have a sort of end goal of making as much information from the SMC discord public as i possibly can. if i can gather enough permissions from the people within the server who put together this information, i will work on an informational series of posts that are publicly available for everyone that wants to mod spore.
