#random vent post i'll prob delete later but i wanna scream in the tags to get this out of my system#i wish my anxiety wasn't so goddam crippling especially when it comes to my hobbies#hobbies are things i'm supposed to enjoy doing and help me relax but my stupid brain won't stfu no matter what i'm doing#like my current problem is my brain trying to tell me that I'm playing farming sims incorrectly or that i'm a fake writer#like i sunk back into my rune factory addiction and farming sims are supposed to be cozy/relaxation games right?#no I'm constantly stressing myself out that I'm not optimizing my crops correctly or progressing the story fast enough or something stupid#like I have an obsession to make every crop/flower level 10 and making sure I always have an obscene amount of corn#since i'm dumping like an unholy amount of nutrients into my soil so i need the corn to bring it's hp back up#i spend most of my time in game micromanaging my crops to make my fields look nice only to realize the shop closed and i cant buy more seed#then i gotta make sure i'm only taming the 'right' monsters and then all the boss monsters#and lets not forget about murakumo because i plan to have Ares ride that innkeeper but fucking Lucy and Priscilla keep overtaking him#because i have to talk to them every day to buy recipe bread and seeds#so i end up throwing grilled skipjack at murakumo every day to make sure my friendship level is always highest with him#because i tried confessing to him in game yesterday AND HE FUCKING FREINDZONED ME#took 10d8 physic damage from that because it was the day after the firefly festival and i thought we had a moment on the beach murakumo#you were blushing and everything when Ares said you looked impressive#but anyways enough about my farming sim rant because honestly that's just a smokeguard so that i'm not perceived#my real issue lately is that any time i open a word document my imposters syndrome starts beating my brain with a spiked bat#or if i start interacting with anything tigerghost related my chest feels like it's getting torn apart#like for some reason it's become a fucking uphill battle to read other people fics and I don't understand why#i think it's because i'm scared that they're way better than me or that if i read these fics it's going to subconsciously affect my own#and then i'll get called out for plagiarism or something cus that's what kinda happened when I was active in the pokespe fandom#i read someone else's fic and realized that they took several scenes from my fics word for word and just threw in an extra character#i called them out on it and it started all this drama that just tainted my experience with fandom in general#it honestly hurt me so badly i left tumblr and stopped writing for a very long time because it killed my creative drive#it took me literal years to finish my stardew fic because of this like it's supposed to be a hobby i do it for fun right?#but no my brain is fucking stupid and keeps telling me that i'm doing it wrong#there have been so many amazing and creative people in the nicktoons unite fandom and everyone i've talked with so far is really nice#especially izzy and aether like honestly you're both fucking saints for letting me ramble in your dm's all the time#like i love talking with people esp about stuff i'm passionate about (which is usually about the characters in whatever story i'm writing)

You and Percy crossed paths during the trio's mission. You happened to be in the same diner as Ares, embarking on your own quest. Grover sensed your presence, and before you knew it, you became an unexpected addition to the group. Fortunately, Ares treated the group better upon learning that you were a daughter of Aphrodite, as he couldn't mistreat a child of his beloved goddess.
Percy was utterly captivated when he first laid eyes on you. "Who's she?" he asked Grover, his attention completely absorbed by your presence. Grover chuckled at Percy's obliviousness to everything else but you.
Impressing the trio as you slay a monster, you confidently remark, "What? Just because I've just painted my nails doesn't mean I can't defeat this ugly thing."
After you confidently slay the monster, Percy looks at you and exclaims, "I'm gonna marry that girl!" Annabeth rolls her eyes, saying, "Oh boy," while Grover bursts into laughter, leaving you blushing
He'd ALWAYS look at you with a little smirk.
It took Percy a while to muster the courage to ask you out, and when he finally did, he stumbled over his words in a nervous attempt.
"Uh, hey, Y/N," Percy started, scratching the back of his head. "I was thinking, you know, maybe we could, um, grab some... uh, food? Yeah, like a, um, dinner thing?" His cheeks turned a subtle shade of pink as he anxiously awaited your response. You couldn't help but smile at Percy's adorable nervousness. With a teasing glint in your eye, you replied, "Dinner sounds great, Percy. I mean, if you're not too scared to share a meal with me."
You wouldn't even need to use charm on him because, well, he's head over heels for you and would do anything without you even asking.
Percy would be the type to love listening to you talk for hours just to admire you.
On a quiet night, Percy appeared at your cabin door with a small box. He rubbed the back of his neck, a bit awkward, and said, "Hey, brought this for you." Opening the box, you found a delicate necklace with a seashell-shaped pendant, reminiscent of the sea. Percy nervously smiled, "I saw this and thought of you, I don't know... thought you might like it." Your heart melted with his sincerity, and you said softly, "Percy, it's perfect. Thank you so much." He scratched his head, a blush rising on his cheeks. "It was nothing, really." Before you knew it, you hugged him and planted a gentle kiss on his cheek. Your siblings from the Aphrodite cabin, who were not exactly discreetly observing, let out a chorus of "awww" and enchanted smiles.
Deep down, Percy hopes you won't break his heart just for the sake of the Aphrodite kids' ritual.
During a casual conversation with your sisters, you found yourself talking about Percy. The way he smiled, the warmth in his eyes – everything seemed to stand out more vividly. Your sisters, with their knowing smiles, teased you playfully. "Y/N, you're glowing whenever you talk about him!" Blushing, you tried to play it off. "Oh, come on, it's nothing. We're just friends." One of your sisters winked. "Friends or not, there's something in the air when you're around him. Admit it, you like him."
He'd want to protect you from everything, and if you got hurt, Percy would blame himself for days until you assured him it wasn't his fault.
As you and Percy strolled through the camp, a boy from the Ares cabin approached you, nervously asking if you'd like to go out sometime. You exchanged a polite smile, ready to turn him down gently, but Percy surprised you. "Sorry, she's taken," he said, intertwining his fingers with yours. You looked at him with a mixture of surprise and curiosity. The Ares boy seemed taken aback, and you couldn't help but chuckle. "Taken? Percy, are we...?" Percy grinned, giving your hand a gentle squeeze. "Yep, we are. Officially. If you're okay with that, of course." Your heart warmed at his words, and with a playful grin, you replied, "Absolutely, seaweed brain."
Percy LOVES hugging you, so there would be lots and lots of hugs.
You two would be the clingy type, doing everything together.
He'd get suspicious every time a guy approached because, well, you're irresistible, and he definitely wouldn't trust the Hermes boys.
You'd suggest spa nights in Percy's cabin, and he'd gladly agree. Many times, he'd ask you to sleep in the cabin with him.
Movie nights that would end with you falling asleep on his shoulder, and he wouldn't know how to handle it at first, but he'd get used to it, feeling like the luckiest demigod in camp.
Percy trying to make cheesy pick-up lines for you in public and leaving you redder than a tomato.
Let's face it; you'd be THE it couple at the camp.

summary: after getting fitted by you, bucky’s going to try on the custom-made suits he’s bought.  unless he makes his move now, he may not get to see you again, and he can’t let that happen.

Bucky had a bone to pick with Tony, which was usually true but this wasn’t work-related for once.  It wasn’t hard to find him in the same place he’d seen him last— eating his lunch in the kitchen, with Sam nearby chowing down on lo mein with a spring roll.
“Hey lefty, what’s cracking?” Tony greeted, mouth full but talking loudly anyways.  
"I went down to that tailor you recommended—" Bucky began, but Tony was quick to interrupt.
"You went there?  Dude, it's a really nice place, you can just call and she'll come to you instead, way more convenient."
"So now you say 'she'?"
Realization dawned on Tony’s expression.  "Ahh, I get it.  You're not used to a female tailor.  Adds a little spice to getting fitted, huh?" he grinned, elbowing Bucky playfully.
Bucky’s throat felt a little dry when he heard that.  "Don't tell me that's why you use her
"
"Hey now, I'm not a creep, I use her cause she's the best, and those house calls are great for discretion— you know, being a celebrity and all.  The eye candy part is just gravy."
"Gravy candy sounds disgusting," Sam chimed in, missing the point entirely.
"Yeah, well, she mentioned some stuff that sure made you sound like a creep."
"Okay, well, you can't blame me for getting caught staring when I'm surrounded by fucking mirrors.  Makes it hard to be stealthy."
"You could try not staring,” Bucky suggested flatly.
"Is that what you did?"
Tony smirked when Bucky failed to reply immediately.  "Okay, so it's easier said than done,” Bucky admitted with a frown, “but still, I hope these house calls were strictly professional."
“What’s it to you, man?  I think somebody’s jealous,” Tony purred.  
“What?  No, it’s not that,” Bucky denied.
“You love her,” Tony sing-songed, completely ignoring Bucky.  “You looooooove her!”
"You are so immature," Bucky rolled his eyes, even though his heart was racing and he was pretty sure he was blushing.  
"No, it's good for you!  She's a catch, you're all brooding and stuff— maybe she can melt the Winter Soldier's frozen heart, hm?"
Sam laughed heartily.  "Stark, you read too many comic books."
"You're saying you don't wanna see Icy Hot here shoot his shot with my tailor?" Tony asked, turning his attention towards Sam.
Sam pondered that, much to Bucky's dismay.  "Depends.  How hot is she?"
"Mega," Tony smirked confidently.  "Legs for miles, and she wears these skirts that make her ass look—"
"I think I've heard enough," Bucky groaned.  "I'm leaving.  And don't ask when I'm going to see her again," he instructed, interrupting Tony just as he'd opened his mouth to speak, "because I won’t tell you.”
As Bucky left, he could hear Tony calling out into the hall: “But I’d be such a great wingman!”

Truth be told, Bucky had put off mastering the use of his smartphone.  It wasn’t just that new technology made him feel old, but that he knew nobody would be calling or messaging him anyways; if the phone didn’t work, he would spare himself the embarrassment of waiting up for nothing.
But once he knew you were going to call?  Suddenly, he was motivated to figure the sucker out.
A few hours later and now all he had to do was stare at it to make sure he wouldn’t miss you.  Luckily, you didn’t make him wait too long.  He recognized the number and decided to let it ring a few times before picking up, so it would seem like he had other things to do besides talk to you.
“Hello?” Bucky asked when he answered, so it would seem like he had other people calling him besides you.
You introduced yourself so formally that he was a little afraid that all that fun energy between you two would be gone.  Thankfully, once he asked what you were calling about, you were back to being cheery and casual again.
“I was just calling to schedule when I could come by with your new suits!” you explained, sounding chipper.
His fingertips were a little tingly just from hearing you talk, nervousness making him antsy (in a weirdly good way).  “I know you said it’s a one-person operation,” he responded smarmily, “but I figured you would outsource delivery.”
You scoffed, though it sounded more amused than irritated.  “It’s not just delivery, I have to check the fit and make sure everything’s exactly to your liking.”
“Oh, well, I’m free all day tomorrow— and I think you already know my address.”  Was it too forward?  Too obvious?  And why did Bucky spend half the time when he was talking to you second-guessing himself?
“Yes, Stark Tower is a relatively common destination for me.  If he doesn’t mind us using it, Tony has a dressing room with plenty of mirrors so you can get a good look.  But, I’d be happy to just go up to your quarters if that’s easier.”
He was not at all ready for you to see his room.  No way he could clean it enough in the next twelve hours; and even then, lots of the team had made fun of how empty and plain it was, so he knew it would just make you think he was boring.
“I’m sure Tony won’t mind you using his dressing room, but he might mind me using it,” Bucky chuckled.
“Well, if he makes a fuss I’ll be sure to set him straight,” you decided confidently.  Somehow, imagining you cursing out Tony was almost hotter than imagining you doing anything else.  “Be sure to bring down your dress shoes so you get the full look and everything.”
“Uhhh
” he trailed off as he scratched the back of his head, trying to remember if he owned anything other than combat boots.  “Not sure I still have those, to be honest.”
"Okay, you'll need shoes too,” you noted aloud, your voice a little distant; he figured you were writing things down, which was why you sounded distracted.  “What size are you?"
"Thirteen."
"I'll bring a selection tomorrow,” you announced firmly.  “And socks, of course.  And some watches, maybe?  And pocket squares."
"Is that it?" he asked sarcastically.
“Oh right, I’m bringing the ties you picked out, too.  I’ll throw in some alternates in case your original choices don’t match the way you were hoping.”
“You really are full-service,” he chuckled.
“I get that a lot,” you replied, a hint of coyness to your tone.
There it was again; that jealousy.  He hated it because he knew it was wrong, but he couldn’t stop it either.  As much as his mind was completely aware that you were an independent, modern woman capable of handling herself, his heart was equally determined to protect you, and spoil you, and do whatever was necessary to make sure you were safe.  
Worse, his gut was less innocent.  Mine, it demanded, all mine.  Nobody else’s.
He pushed it down and just tried to get through the rest of the call without saying something he’d regret.  You confirmed the date and time with him, and he tried not to be too aggressive when he said he was looking forward to it.  
He hung up his phone and sighed, staring off into space.  Now all that was left to do was wait, and be overwhelmed with anxiety.  Thankfully, he was good at the second thing.

"So, what do you think?" 
I think you look so damn good from every angle.  I think I might spend all my money on suits just to be sure I can see you again.  I think you need somebody to love you the way you deserve.  I think you’d look like an angel waking up in my bed.  
You waved your hand in front of his face for a moment, calling his attention back to reality.  “Helloooo?”
Drawn out of his trance, Bucky finally looked in the menagerie of mirrors surrounding him and admired his reflection, amazed by the perfect fit of his first suit.  The difference in quality between this and something off the rack was beyond apparent.  Most of all, your talent was undeniable.  "I think it's beautiful."
You smiled proudly.  "Of course it is, but do you like how you look in it?"
"Honestly?  I feel a bit
 out of place.  I'm obviously not classy enough for a suit like this."
"Oh, nonsense," you dismissed.  
He frowned, convinced this was all flattery.  "No, seriously, this is
 maybe I should just wear tactical gear to every event."
"Well, you'd still look good, but you're not always a soldier.  Sometimes you're only a man.  And every man should own a fine suit."
It was much too profound of a thing to say while you casually straightened his jacket, only to pop out from behind his reflection to smile at him in the mirror.
“Let’s get the next one on you,” you decided, helping him lose the jacket but having him move into a private dressing room to switch trousers and shirts.  “I put a turtleneck in there instead of just a regular button-up,” you explained through the door as he changed, “in case you wanted to see it that way.”
Once he’d put it on, he stepped back out and you were looking at him so proudly— well, you were looking at your handiwork with pride, really, but he could pretend it was for him and hope actually impress you that much one day.
“I went with a shawl lapel on this one, as opposed to the last one which was notched,” you explained as you traced the line with your finger.  “Spoiler: the next one has a peak lapel.  But enough about that one: what do you think of this one?”
“This looks like something my friend Sam would wear,” Bucky decided as he looked at himself in the cranberry suit and black turtleneck.  The shoes you’d had him try on with this were intricate as well, with subtle stitching in the leather and a shine so immaculate he could almost see a reflection in them.  
“Well, is your friend Sam stylish?” you asked.  
“He would certainly say so,” he smirked.
“I’m inclined to agree, because you—” you gave him a thorough glance up and down, so thorough in fact that he felt a bit exposed under your gaze, “—look marvelous.”
“Not pretentious?” 
“No, no, it works on you,” you assured, “you’ve got the looks for it.”
“And what looks are those?”
“Um
 good?  Good looks?” 
He definitely remembered a time when that seemed like the obvious answer, because he had relied on being good-looking for a lot of things in life, but that felt very far away now.  Maybe it was just that people who didn’t know what he’d done could still think he was good looking, but everyone else saw the evil within beginning to leak out the way that he did.  
But you knew what he’d done, didn’t you?  You had to.  You knew Tony, you were here at the Tower
 unless you were intentionally not up-to-date on current events, you must have heard of the Winter Soldier.
“Don’t act so surprised,” you huffed, “as if it’s a big secret or something.  You’re obviously very attractive.”
Bucky cleared his throat nervously.  “Uh, thanks.”  He wanted to return the compliment, but thought it might be inappropriate or rude somehow.  You broke the silence quickly as you held up two pocket squares in front of him.
“Which of these do you prefer?” you prompted.  He selected the solid gold one, making you smile.  “I knew you’d pick that one.”
“How?”
“I dunno, just fits you,” you shrugged as you folded it and gently placed it in his pocket.  Even through so many layers, your touch on his chest made his heart flutter.  Your fingers brushing over his as you slipped a watch onto his wrist was enough to cause palpitations.
He looked better in this ensemble than he expected.  This version of himself looked much more likely to be invited to parties than any other version.  If only he actually wanted to go to parties.
You put him in the pinstripe suit last, after putting a few pins in the cranberry suit to indicate minor changes you would make later, and stepped back to ponder your work.
"Hm, unbutton those top two buttons for me?" you requested with a raised eyebrow.
I will if you do, he thought to himself, but silently unbuttoned his own shirt anyway.
"I mean, it definitely works like this, but I wanna see you in a tie.  And I've got juuuuust the one," you smiled.  Soon you were approaching him with a red paisley tie, and helping him button up his shirt and tying the tie for him— you explained something about how it was a unique knot he likely couldn't do himself, but he was too lost in having you so close to notice.  It would be so easy to just reach up and grab your waist, pull you into a kiss, finally tell you how bad he wants you.
Well, it would be physically easy, but it would be very scary.  Just imagining it had his heart racing.
“I heard from Tony this morning,” you informed him suddenly, slipping the tie around his neck and popping his collar up for him.
“Really?  Is he in need of a wardrobe update?”
“Yes, but he hasn’t realized that yet so that wasn’t what he called about.”
He laughed a little at the jab, though it also made him a little worried what secret opinions you held about his own style (or lack thereof).
“We talked about you, actually,” you added.
“O-oh,” Bucky stammered, “uh, he’s not exactly my biggest fan.  So whatever he said probably isn’t true.”
“He said that you have a crush on me,” you replied nonchalantly, not even looking up from your work on his tie.
Bucky gulped, and he knew you saw the bob of his Adam’s apple because you were staring right at his neck.
“Like I said, Tony isn’t a very reliable source,” Bucky replied, but his voice cracked in the middle and he cringed internally.
“I’ll write it off as another one of Tony’s off-color jokes then,” you dismissed, perfecting the knot of his tie and stepping back to observe him.  He always felt nervous when you looked at him like that, like he couldn’t hide anything from you.
“What
 what did you say, when he told you that?” Bucky asked nervously.
“I asked him what he was smoking and if I could have some,” you laughed.  “I thought it was totally impossible— and don’t worry, I didn’t tell him that you got hard when I did your inseam.”
Bucky’s throat became dry at the same moment that his palms got clammy.
“I— um, I was just—”
“Oh, it’s fine,” you dismissed quickly, still talking about this all so casually which only made him even more confused, “you’re not the first, it happens.”
“I’m not the first?!” 
“Yeah, if anything you were one of the few who didn’t say something creepy about it, which is always appreciated.  It’s just a bodily reaction, you can’t control it.”
“Did Tony ever say something creepy?” Bucky pressed, his hands involuntarily tightening into fists— another bodily reaction he couldn’t control.
“You know, Tony said you were really worried that he had been inappropriate with me, or even that he and I had a fling or something,” you added as you stepped back, giving him a quizzical look, “and now it’s sort of sounding like he was right.”
“No, no, it’s not that, I just—”
“Was he right about anything else?” you pressed, raising an eyebrow.
“I was being nosy, I’m sorry,” he sighed, “it’s just that
 and I know it’s none of my business, but the idea of him and you
 it isn’t a pleasant mental image.”
You laughed a little, in a way that made him feel kind of small.  “Why not?  You know how he is.  Definitely has a wandering eye
 and occasionally a wandering hand.”
Bucky winced.  “I swear, if he ever put his hands on you, I’ll go find him right now and beat him senseless.”
“What if I wanted him to?”
He nearly saw red, but he knew he had no right to be angry.  You were a grown adult and he had no ownership over you
 he just sort of wished that he did.
“So it’s true then?  You and him
?”
“No, Bucky,” you laughed, “it’s not.  Nothing’s ever happened between us.  I generally don’t get involved with clients like that.”
“Generally?  Is there an exception?”
You chewed your lip, seemingly a little thrown off by his question.  “Uh, I mean, no— I’ve never been involved with a client, no, if that’s what you’re asking.”
“Why would you say ‘generally’ then?”
“Uh, I guess I just
 I wouldn’t want to rule anything out, that’s all.  Never say never.”
And for a moment he almost wondered if you were flirting with him.  Certainly not, with him having come across as both a jealous hot-head and a bumbling dweeb who pops a boner faster than a randy teenager, but just for a second the way you looked at him was
 questionable.
“I mean, who knows,” you continued, “what if, hypothetically, some gorgeous guy walked into my store one night— a sensitive guy, who made me laugh and put up with me rambling about ties for the better part of an hour— and I was supposed to dress him up when all I wanted to do was undress him?”
Your finger started to trail down his chest lightly, tickling his skin through the dress shirt. 
“I wouldn’t want to think he was off-limits just because he’s a customer
 right?” you asked quietly, looking up at him and biting your lip.
He was afraid to make the wrong move, but he really really hoped this was flirting.
“I don’t think anyone would object to being dressed or undressed by you,” Bucky responded, hoping he could stay neutral until he was sure what you were talking about.
You chewed your lip, looking away as if you were thinking about something. 
"I know I certainly haven't.  And wouldn't," he added, feeling the need to say something.
You nodded, placing his tie inside his jacket and seeming happy with your work.
“You know, the fit looks great," you announced, "but I’m a little worried that one of the measurements was wrong.  Mind if I do your inseam again?”
His throat was dry all of a sudden, but he responded quickly anyways.  "Uh, go ahead

You looked up at him as you started to sink to your knees, very slowly.  That little move looked real good in the mirror behind you.  “Last time I did this, there was something getting in the way, made it difficult to know if I was doing it right

"M-my apologies," he whispered.
"Oh no, I'm not complaining," you purred as you slowly began to run your fingers up the side of his leg, keeping searing eye contact until his knees felt a little weak.
When your hand reached the top of his inner thigh, the back of it brushed against his balls and he shivered.  Delicately, and so excruciatingly slowly, your hand moved higher and gently rubbed his erection through the fabric.

(y/N) looked around stunned and extremely surprised.
"So? How was that for a 'magic trick'?"
(y/N)'s gaze returned to face him. "Y-you.. How?"
The sorcerer just hummed. "Who knows?"
"This... Must be a dream then..", he sighed disappointed, a tinge of sadness in his voice, "That's a bummer.. I really like you."
Now it was Solomon's turn to blush.
"I- I understand the confusion, but- mph?!"
With that his lips pressed onto Solomon's.
The sorcerer froze, while (y/N)'s mouth opened a little, slipping his tongue through Solomon's mouth. He tasted like sweet liquor, further entrancing the sorcerer in a passionate kiss.
Solomon got over his shock quickly as his hands found the other's waist, pulling him towards himself. When (y/N) sighed into the kiss, hands burying into his white locks, excitement shot through his spine.

no, don’t misunderstand the situation, yaoyorozu was one of the sweetest, loveliest and most intelligent girls you’ve ever met.
but also one of the richest.
see, the thing is that you were not born in a “i have it all” family type of environment. you lived well, yes. but it’s for sure that your family did struggle way too many times in their way of spending money.
that’s why when you got into UA tears couldn’t stop falling through your face, you were finally able to do something about that. you always wanted to become the greatest hero, you thought that being able to rescue people from danger was the most selfless thing to do, you were familiar with that, so ever since you were little that was your goal. and besides that, you wanted to help you family so they wouldn’t have to worry about it anymore.
also because of that your friendship with uraraka was a great one. you understood what was like to face little things that the others didn’t, and you suddenly became close that you almost considered her a sister.
she was the most important friend to you, well, along with other person.
your eyes started itching, currently at the common room table where you and your friends were having dinner.
kaminari was on the sofa among with bakugou and mina, but it was easy to hear them. so that comment took everyone’s attention, even shouto’s.

you always admired the way she was because of her origin, not in a bad way but you were obviously impressed, and if you were honest with yourself, sometimes it made you feel small.
but until now you never thought about this new insecurity, one that came up with the fact that todoroki and momo would actually look great together.
you tried to take those thoughts away, but your dear classmates were not helping at all.
the rambling of momo being a super match to shouto was getting louder and louder every second to you.

if anybody could hear the conversation, they would actually say that he was being rude, but you knew him he was just expressing his feelings, weird way tho.
“is it about the money? believe me, yaoyorozu is an incredible girl but you don’t have to compare yourself because how different she is to you in terms of money” your eyes were widened.
why was he talking so much all of a sudden?
“you don’t understand todo...”
“i know what it feels to mad, and seeing you this way it just does it to me over and over again. because everyone has their own opinion on perfect, but to me, you are that definition”
your heart froze at that last thing, his expression was so serious that if you weren’t listening carefully you would have thought that he was mad at you for any other reason. but that’s why you liked him so miches, deep down you understood shouto more than anyone else”
so you didn’t know any other answer that hug him in gratitude.
he was shocked, he never received some kind of display of pure love affection before.
but something in the way you did made him feel better. almost as if your hugs were some magical potion to the answer of everything he needed.
he felt so warm with you between his arms that he didn’t mind staying like this for a couple more minutes.
“wanna go out sometime?” your typical you started coming back again.
the confident and smart girl he learned to care about.
a soft smile crossed his face.
“anytime you want”
and so you thought, you did not have anything to worry about anymore.

Forget the world
I really really hope everyones okay at the moment. The world is truly fucking shit, but sending all my love, and it is okay to feel completely done at this point (I do hence why I wrote this instead of meeting my deadlines :/)

A third lockdown in the UK. More than 1000 deaths in a day. US capitol riots highlighting just how stark the white privilege is. The worlds a scary place and sometimes it gets too much. It’s good to be informed, to be politically and socially active, fighting the good fight
 right? Well yes, but we are humans.
Humans are more complex than that. We ruminate we feel and we empathise. None of these issues have directly affected you, but that doesn't mean these things don’t hurt you - even a little. Bit by bit, a person can so easily get chipped away until there’s not a lot of fight left.
These daily 5 o’clock briefing, the prime minister in all his stupid oafish idiocy invading your living rooms with his persistent if oh so incorrect chat of ‘how well the UK has handled this crisis’. Then going on to spout more and more bad news. It was like a scheduled form of torture that Brits just had to through. And it just got a lot.
What didn’t help at all to you, was the fact your boyfriend was leaving for work again. You’d barely had him for two weeks before he was being whisked away in his private jet again. And even that time, it wasn’t really couple quality time
 not by a long shot. Because of the complicated and ever-changing laws in the UK, you had both moved into his parents' house rather than being stuck just the two of you over Christmas. Don’t get the wrong impression, you lovvvveeeeeddddd his family - it was crazy, chaotic and infuriating in the best way.
That, however, didn’t get away from the fact you missed him. You missed lying in till the afternoon. You missed having breakfast for dinner after cooking it up in your skimpy pyjamas. You missed silence - of the two of you just coexisting. You missed your Tom.
SO fair to say you were not feeling particularly over-enthused on this overcast Tuesday morning. Somehow sensing this while you were still asleep, Tom chose not to wake you and instead crept out the room to go golfing with his brothers and dad for the last time before he left. Having woke up a couple of hours ago, you made the executive decision to just stay there - just feeling like the energy it’d take up to move was too torturous to expend. When Tom and the boys got back then, they immediately recounted the whole experience to Nikki - Harry showing off at his particularly good round - before Tom naturally started searching for you. His mum, being almost psychic, instantly noticed and just shook her head over Harry’s droning voice as she pointed upstairs. And with a thankful nod, he snuck away - if anything grateful for the escape.
“Love
. Love?” Tom hesitantly crept into the room, your body facing away and still wrapped like a burrito in the duvet. You rolled over and gave him a small smile, to which he grinned at and immediately leapt on to the bed. Land directly on your stomach. With force. You let out an ‘ooof’ as his not so petite body knocked all the air out of you, making you groan and recoil to your side as he laughed pitifully at you. “I missed you” He just grinned, worming his way from lying horizontally across you until he was lying completely on top of you his chin resting on your chest bone as he smiled at you. “And you thought you’d jump on me to show that?” “I couldn’t help it you just looked so peaceful” You quirked your head, not seeing his point. “And your not allowed to look like that without me!” He huffed, finally rolling off you as you giggled at his stupidity. “But seriously you good? Its 12 and you’ve not moved yet.” “Mhmm just
 just.” “You're just just?” He teased, now leaning up on his elbow as he smiled down at you. “Exactly. I just can’t deal with today.” You sighed as you spoke, looking up to him with eyes as if asking him to help. It made his jokey and teasing demeanour take a serious turn, his eyebrows furrowing as he really inspected your face - as if trying to the find the answer written in small print under your nose. He whispered a ‘what do you mean’ asking you to go on. “I don’t know 
it’s just lockdown and America and

I’m just self-pitying really.” “No” Tom stated rather adamantly, as he sat up and then pulled you up by the arms earning yet another groan from you as he interrupted your cocoon of warmth. “You're allowed to feel shitty because it is all actually very shitty indeed.” You rolled your eyes at that, even if you did agree because you didn’t want to be the mopey desperate girlfriend who can’t handle when he goes away. “Y/n/n I’m serious. The news and everything
 it’s a lot and you're allowed to feel like you can’t comprehend whats going on.” In response you just nodded, averting your eyes away from his because, for no real reason at that moment, his eye contact seemed to be forcing you to cry. But the boy did not let up. Instead, he crawled up to you, his legs sandwiching yours as he kneeled in front of you. “And
 I’m going to miss you a lot when I go.” Tom gently pushed your chin up so his locked eyeline with your watery ones that instantly started to overflow. Tom murmured an ‘oh love’ as he threw his arms around you, letting you cry into his shoulder - most probably ruining his new fancy golf shirt.
You stayed like that for some time, him gently hushing you and stroking the back of your messy bed head. Until you’d finally calmed into little hiccups and Tom arched back. He cupped his hands around your cheeks, his thumbs brushing away your tear tracks. “Let's have a just us day huh? We can
 forget the world.” “Forget the world?” Your laugh was a little wet and sad sounding but it was music to Tom’s ears and only spurred him on more. “Yeh! Fuck the world. It’s just you and me and we can do whatever you want!” “You’re stupid” you just giggled, trying to hide your face because he had you blushing like a lovestruck teen
 which was exactly how he made you feel. “I know! So come on what should we do
 movie or something isn’t right because you still can think about- I got it!” He leapt off you and started looking around the room, first pulling the chair out from its position in the corner and then whipping the duvet cover off your legs. “TOM! what-“ “We are building a fort!” And his stupid grin said it all. It took next to no convincing before you were running downstairs with him, ransacking the sitting room of all blankets (earning you some comically quizzical gazes from his Dad and Sam) before running back up.
This stupid stupid boy that you had to pleasure of calling your boyfriend had you revert to a seven-year-old as the two of you attempted to construct this fort. Attempted being the keyword, it kept collapsing when one of you accidentally stubbed your toe on the chair holding all the structural integrity of your creation (*Tom). However, after a ridiculous amount of attempts you were adding the piste de resistance - aka fairy lights - to the interior while Tom set up a game of Harry Potter monopoly on the next floor you’d made.
And that’s how you burned the day away; laughing whilst getting overly competitive at your Harry Potter knowledge; ordering pizza that you forced Harry to delivery to the entrance of your fort from the front door (you even managed to make Harry knock on the makeshift blanket door, which had the two of you cracking up no end); generally just being stupid together. Before you knew it, the time had ticked to half eleven and the both of you knew it was time to bed down for the night. With a sigh, signifying the beginning of the end of Tom’s last day in the UK, you went to crawl out of the fort - expect your boyfriend had other plans. Rather, he yanked you back towards him so you almost fell into his front and then proceeded to roll you both, so now you were lying flat on the ground while he leaned above you. “You

 are not going anywhere.” You hummed at him about to ask why, before being rudely interrupted as he pressed his lips against yours. You didn't fight it though, immediately relaxing into it and wrapping your legs round his waist to pull him impossibly closer. After a few moments, you broke the kiss staring up at him with the softest eyes. “Sorry I just had to stop you from ruining the moment.” He jibed, and again you went to scowl but were cut off by his soft lips on yours once again. Tom only pulled away when both of your lungs had started to burn a little, needing to come up for air. With a whisper telling you not to move, Tom bolted out the fort. You could hear him scurrying around in the room - to be honest, it sounded like he was ransacking it- before the big light was flicked off and he crawled back in in the darkness.
This time you’d learned your lesson, waiting patiently until he spoke first. “I got a surprise
 it was uh- supposed to be for when I was already away but I think now works too” You couldn’t see his face through the darkness, but what you knew, either way, was the excitement that’d be on his face - he loved revealing stuff like this to you because he is, as previously mentioned a child. And then he flicked the switch and the interior of the tent was illuminated by a pattern of stars, projecting upwards and swirling around on the blanket roof. The sight had you audible gasping, this time the dim light it gave meaning Tom could see your eyes widen in delight. “Tom its-“ “Not as beautiful as you.”
Hell, you knew how fucking corny this was. And how if any of your mates ever recounted the story you’d be recoiling is dismay at the cliche-ness of it. But at that moment you swore your heart could burst, looking between the twinkling projections and Tom’s dimly glowing features - the blue light bouncing off his cheekbones and making him look just even more divine. “We are sleeping here tonight because I just don’t want this moment to end” You whispered making Tom chuckle as he lay back down next to you, letting you curl into his side and resting your head on his chest - so you were watching the swirling walls whilst listening to his heartbeat. “This fort
 will always be ours.” He spoke lowly, reaching for your hands and entwining his fingers with yours slowly. “I’m going to mis-“ “Shhhhh” He blocked you from finishing the phrase, pressing a kiss to the top of your head before continuing. “ Don’t forget we’re forgetting the world yeh? It’s just you and me.” “Just you and me isn’t half bad.” You whispered, using your thumb to draw little meaningless patterns on the top of his palm. “No
 not half bad at all.” His voice was so quiet, so calming he barely even used his voice - rather just breathing the words out as he squeezed you into his chest. You knew he was trying to make you fall asleep. This is what he always did, a kiss to the head, his voice barely existing, him squeezing you just a little tighter. But you didn’t want to. Because that meant that he’d leave when you woke.
You desperately tried to fight the waves of relaxation, trying to pay attention to each little swirl and tinkle of the projector but it was hypnotic, and that coupled with the steady beat of his heart had you soon losing the battle. Tom could tell you were fighting, Tom could always tell. So he gently shifted his arm under you baggy t-shirt, allowing Tom to trace little circles on your bare skin. That was enough to have force your eyes to become deadweights as they locked shut.
“I got you
I’ll still be here when you wake up” You hummed, pressing yourself into his side a little more. “‘hankyou for

” Tom grinned, knowing you weren’t going to make it to the end of the sentence. But that didn’t matter. At that moment, the only thing in the world that matters was having you in his arms.

You and TimothĂ©e had been dating for a little over three months. The best three months of your life. You hated describing your relationship as “perfect”, but you really felt like it was. You sat up on your knees and gripped his cock that was now red, swollen, and begging for a release. You lined him up at your entrance and slowly sunk down onto him.

You could see beads of sweat begin to form on Timmy’s forehead. His jaw was clenched and his hips began to buck up into yours causing your head to fly backwards and screams of pleasure to leave your mouth.
“Oh fuck. Timmy, baby, I’m so close.”
“Shit me too. Wh-where should I
?” he spoke in a lowered tone, trying to maintain his composure.
“Inside of me, inside of me,” you mentally praised yourself for remembering to take your pill.
Before long, Timothée was spilling his load inside you. The warmth of his orgasm spurred you on to your own.
Exhausted, you collapsed beside him, the only sounds in the room were those of the two of you catching your breath.
When your heart beat had slowed, you turned your head to gaze at him only to find he was already looking at you.

“That was

You let out a loud laugh, leaning over to kiss him.
“Maybe later,” you replied, “...and then I can teach you some other things.” You gave him a wink as you stood up to go shower, his eyes following your every step as you heard an “I love you” come from over your shoulder.

Written in the Stars

Summary: Bly and Aayla were stargazing after a brutal battle while longing for the war to end

Laying on top of the soft, emerald grass, Bly rested his head on top of his arms and focused on the night sky, which was encrusted with sparkling stars and an illuminating sapphire moon.
Two, four, six, eight, he muttered to himself, pointing his finger slightly towards the horizon. The clone commander of the 327th Battalion wondered the exact number of stars that he's gazing at this moment.
With only the crickets chirping in his surroundings and the rest of his men asleep in their tents, Bly thanked the Maker that he gets to spend his alone time counting all the stars in the sky, since he hardly had the privilege to do so.
Though he wished that his Jedi General was laying beside him, instead of resting after a long day at the battlefield, with bodies of his dead brothers and sisters laying cold on the ground and an orchestra of blasters and explosions deafening Bly, who was an unwilling actor in this play, along with his troops.
It was his duty to fight for freedom and justice so that one day, the people of the Galactic Republic will live in peace and prosperity. And yet, Bly finds himself doubting whether the war was worth the lives that were lost during the brutal battle.
Moments ago, Aayla was leading him and his troops to fight against the Separatist invasion on Reza, which was a planet known for exporting corn. The prairie land, with a barren grassland and a small town nearby, was engulfed in flames along with the sea of cornfields.
With the screams of the civilians that were caught in between, Bly could never forgive himself for watching as a child got shot by the battle droids and not being able to save him from the Grim Reaper.
But Aayla, on the other hand, had it worse. As a Jedi, she not only sensed their emotion but absorbed the pain that the villagers had to suffer. It got to the point that a fellow Jedi Knight, Eva Bella Young, suffered a seizure from the intense emotion.
He pines as he glanced at the mesmerizing painting that the Maker has blessed him in the sky. He has travelled from planet to planet and yet, he took the beauty of the universe for granted. 
Growing up in Kamino, the only thing that Bly was taught was to fight until you die. Nothing more, nothing less. It wasn't until he was assigned to Aayla that he learned to appreciate everything before it was gone forever in his life. His brothers, his sisters, his best friends, and Aayla.
Like the blue moon, he finds her attractive. With blue skin and luscious lips, Bly was struck by her looks, and his feeling for her was more intense when he saw how she treated his brothers and sisters, especially Ahri.
Whenever Bly wanted to speak to Aayla alone, his vod’ika, Ahri, would always be asking her stupid questions, like how to find a book in the library or how to strike a conversation with a woman she met at the bar.
He envies them for trying to steal her attention from time to time, but he knows that jealousy would do no good except poisoning his own heart. He knows that having a sense of entitlement is not the way to have around a woman like Aayla. But yet, he watches most romance movies that his batchmate, Ares recommended to him and he noticed that the characters were constantly pining for each other’s love, ignoring the people around them.
He thought those couples in the movies were selfish and had little chemistry with each other. From what Odd Eye told him, relationships take years to build and seconds to crumble. The thought of losing Aayla in the war scares him as if he has enough of seeing his own troops dying and suffering in pain.
“Bly?” he heard a familiar voice calling him. “Are you alright?” 
The commander turned around and saw Aayla standing behind him, her Jedi robes wrapped with her cloak. Bly glanced at her with awe as her beauty shone underneath the blue moon. Her eyes sparkled as her gentle smile warms his heart, making him unsure of his words towards her. “Can’t sleep?”
“Not really,” she answered honestly as she sat beside him, turning his cheeks deep red. “I’ve been thinking about the battle today. It was horrifying to see the villagers suffer in the middle of the battle.”
“Yeah, it was awful,” Bly let out a sorrowful sigh. “They don’t deserve to be caught in the middle of the battle.”
“Unfortunately, that is the cost of the war. It’s always the good ones that had to die first, and all because we want peace in the galaxy.”
Bly hates to agree with that statement that Aayla but she has a point, even if it hurts him personally. "People don't seem to understand what we have to go through, and yet, here we are."
"That is true, though people have a point about the war. All it does is take lives after lives until there are no more to take. Even the ones that survived aren't the same anymore."
That also rings true to him. Bly himself had gone through so many battles. Day by day, he wished that the Reaper would visit him instead of his brothers and sisters. He felt sick to the stomach whenever he had to list down every clone trooper who perished in his report. They may be engineered to kill droids but deep down, those men and women have feelings as well. All those wishes that they made within themselves, were never accomplished.
“Aayla,” he stuttered. “Do you ever wish that you could turn back time and save everyone you loved from dying?”
“Sometimes I do,” Aayla admitted. “I sometimes wished that I could save my friends from death, but in the end, there was nothing we could do except to mourn for them and move on with our lives. It’s not good if you often dwell with your own grief.”
“I see, but do you always blame yourself for watching them die without being able to do anything at all?”
Through the Force, the Twi’lek Jedi sensed turmoil within Bly. His questions about wanting to save his brothers and sisters alarmed her, though, not in a severe manner. She understood the weight he had to carry as the commander of the 327th Battalion. As a Jedi General and peacekeeper, she felt the same burden as well, even without training in leading an army. 
“Bly, if something is bothering you, you can always talk to me,” she assured him, brushing her hand with his, much to his surprise.
“I’m alright, general,” he cleared his throat and sat up straight, letting go of her soft palms. “It’s just
.”
“You don’t have to say it if you don’t feel comfortable about it.”
“No, general,” he shook his head. “You’ve made a good point about moving on.”
Aayla shifted her gaze towards the sky, which were painted with the stars and galaxy by the Makers. She was thankful that she was wide awake in the gloomy night to see the wonders of the universe. With the war raging in the galaxy, Aayla felt like a youngling who was counting stars until she decided to go to bed.
She remembered a time when there was only peace in the galaxy. A time when the only thing she was sad was when an elderly Jedi Master became one with the Force. A time when children were running around in the hallways of the Jedi Temple instead of leading an army of soldiers. 
Aayla wonders if suffering and pain was worth it to achieve peace in the galaxy. She heard a million times that the war would end someday, but that someday doesn’t seem to come any faster as it goes on and on, claiming lives after lives. But for now, she just wants to enjoy the everlasting sight that is laying beside her, counting every star in the sky. “So, how many of them did you manage to count?”
“I’m sorry, what?” Bly asked, clueless. 
“The stars, silly,” she chuckled. “How many stars did you manage to count?”
The clone commander blushed, feeling like an idiot for not paying enough attention to her. “Well, I counted around a thousand stars in the sky.”
“Really?” her eyes widened. “That’s amazing. I’m impressed with your mathematics skills.”
“To be honest with you, Aayla, I was only guessing. I didn’t get to count past 20 stars, actually.”
“Well, it’s still impressive, though,” she shrugged. “At least it’s better than not counting at all.”
Bly beamed, tightening his lips. “H-hey Aayla, can I ask you something?”
“Of course, Bly. What is it that you want to ask me about?”
“What kind of advice would you give yourself if you could go back to the past?” he wondered, glancing deeply at her eyes. 
“Well, that is a good question,” she said, moving her eyelids upwards, thinking what kind of answer would she give to him. “My only advice to my younger self is to not be overly attached with everyone you loved, as it is unhealthy and it leads to obsession.”
He nodded at her statement. “Did you have an unhealthy attachment with someone before?”
“I used to have intense emotion with my friend Kit, but he doesn't feel the same way for me. So I had to let him go and respect his feelings towards me.”
Bly couldn't help seeing green whenever he saw Aayla and Kit Fisto interacting with each other. Then again, he also felt the same way when Ahri stole her attention away from him. He knows that he doesn't own Aayla, but he felt that he should stop being jealous towards everyone who talks to her, especially his vod'ika, Ahri.
“Are you and Kit still friends?”
“We are,” she nodded. “He is my best friend and I won’t have it any other way.”
“That’s good to hear,” he gleamed. “It’s no good getting your lustrous feelings in the way of friendship anyways. Imagine what it does to your friendship with Kit.”
“Yes, there would be horrible consequences,” she answered, taking a deep breath of the fresh air in her surroundings. “Has that ever happened to you before, Bly?”
He has to be completely honest with Aayla, especially when it comes to his feelings towards and resentment towards Ahri. “My sister and I have been close with each other since the Battle of Geonosis. And then one day, when we were assigned to one of the most beautiful Jedi General, who is also smart and cautious during wartime.”
Aayla could only blush as she knew what Bly was telling her, and who is the particular person that he was referring to.
“And guess what, my feelings towards the general grew as we fought with each other, side-by-side, and we even began to understand each other as well. So imagine my surprise when I found out that my sister also has feelings for the general as well. I didn’t take it well and I ended up lashing out at her.”
He paused for a moment, before he decided to continue his story towards her. “She ended up crying and retreated to her quarters. I felt terrible. She was my closest sister in the 327th Battalion and I made her cry. I guess envy and possessiveness has grown inside my heart without realizing it, but that doesn’t excuse my behaviour towards her.”
“Later, I knocked on her barrack and I apologize for making her feel this way. She forgave me, but I still felt bad for making her miserable, so we talked and talked for hours, and we strengthened our friendship, without letting our pride and ego get in the way.”
Aayla looked at him in a proud manner, placing her hand on his shoulder. “I’m glad that you and Ahri worked on the issue between the both of you. Bly, I understand that you love me very much but sometimes, we can’t be too attached to each other. Otherwise, our relationship would lead to obsession, which is unhealthy for the both of us.”
“I know, Aayla, and I’m ashamed for thinking this way,” he frowned, avoiding her glance. “I just wished that we’re both allowed to be open about our love towards each other. I’m just sick and tired of keeping this a secret.”
“I know,” she caressed his face as she leaned her forehead onto his. “But as long as we have each other, then you have nothing to worry about.”
Bly wrapped his arms around her waist as he felt his heart pounding gently, his eyes closed. Their love may be forbidden and scandalous towards everyone, but he and Aayla surrendered their fate to the Maker of the galaxy. After all, their love story is written in the stars for their children and their grandchildren to read someday.

The Buy In
Chapter 7: Just One Night

Bucky waited nervously for Tony to show up, forcing himself not to pace but unable to stop tapping his fingers against his knee as he sat on the couch and ignored the show he’d put on the television. In the past few hours he’d come to terms with the difficult realization that he was going to have to go to his handlers and recuse himself from this assignment. Having already made the decision to protect Tony from the raid, he couldn’t trust himself to not tamper with the investigation further, which would violate everything he believed in. Removing himself would set the investigation back for months, maybe even longer – which he couldn’t bring himself to feel bad about – but he couldn’t go through the motions for a mission he didn’t believe in. That was the whole reason he’d gotten out of the Army all those years ago. He knew he’d probably get busted down to traffic cop for his trouble, but it was the right thing to do.
All of which meant that Bucky had given himself permission to not be on duty during this dinner – he wasn’t going to try to glean more information about Tony’s operations or ask any probing questions so he couldn't make the conflict of interest any worse. Instead, Bucky could be nervous about the real matter at hand, which was that he was about to go on a date with a guy that Bucky liked way more than he should.
Not that it could go anywhere, Bucky told himself. He was still a cop, and Tony was still a crime lord, and he’d been lying to the man for months now. In any event, once he recused himself from the case, he would have to disappear from Stark’s life and reach completely; if he was being honest with himself, the smartest thing to do for his career would be to start looking for a new position outside of New York City right now, but he shied away from that thought for reasons he didn't want to think about too deeply.
But all of that was for future Bucky to worry about. For now, he was about to go out to dinner with a man who had been a runner up in People Magazine’s Sexiest Man of the Year contest multiple years in a row and who still made it onto the list of New York’s most eligible bachelors despite his “alleged” criminal ties. A man who liked chocolate chip cookies and fed bits of chicken to stray cats when he thought no one was looking.
Bucky blew out a breath and realized that he hadn’t brushed his teeth, so he got up and was headed for the bathroom when the buzz of his phone against the coffee table made him jump.
Here! The message came from an unknown number, but it had to be Tony. Bucky quickly swished some mouthwash and grabbed his wallet as he stepped into his shoes.
As soon as he got into the car he realized he had been so busy having a third-of-life crisis that he hadn’t even thought about where to go for dinner. “Hey,” he managed, feeling all of the excruciating awkwardness of a first date. Tony was dressed a lot like he had been earlier, with a suit coat over a plain shirt, but tonight it was black on black with a gleam of silver at Tony’s wrist. Bucky did his best not to stare but judging from the way the corner of Tony’s mouth was curling up, he probably failed.
“Hey, yourself, Blue Eyes,” Tony said. He gave Bucky an appreciative glance, lingering on his freshly shaven face, before he pulled away from the curb, which went a long way towards making Bucky feel less awkward. “You like Italian?”
“What’s not to like?” Bucky said philosophically.
“Good man,” Tony said. “My mother was Italian, so when I say this place has the best Italian food in the city, I know what I’m talking about." The drive went by quickly despite city traffic; Bucky asked about his mother’s family and in return got a ton of entertaining stories about Tony’s summers on his mother’s estate, including getting locked outside naked when a girl’s parents came home unexpectedly early. Soon enough they drove past a restaurant with people waiting outside, and Tony pulled around into the alley behind the restaurant that had at least four NO PARKING signs posted with a varying number of exclamation points and underlining. When Tony saw Bucky looking at one, he shrugged. “I don’t count,” he said, which Bucky could believe. They went in the back door of the restaurant and were immediately greeted by a smiling waiter, who escorted them to a private room where a table was set for two. The table was dwarfed by the space; this was clearly a room meant for a wedding or birthday party, but Tony must have reserved it just for them. The waiter took their drink orders (“Your usual, Mr. Stark?”) and as he left pulled a heavy curtain across the entrance to the room and the noise of the rest from the restaurant was muted. The lighting in the room was dim, the table was small, and the intimate feeling was exacerbated by the candle on the table.
Bucky started to say something about it, then realized he probably shouldn’t call attention to how romantic everything looked for the sake of his own sanity. He grabbed his menu and studied it, aware that Tony, having probably already memorized the menu, was studying him from across the table. “Are you going to judge me based on what I order?” he asked, meeting Tony’s eyes from over the top of the menu.
“Yes.”
“So it’s a test.” Bucky narrowed his eyes at Tony, as if trying to read his thoughts. After a moment, he folded his menu. “What do you recommend?”
Tony’s smile was blinding. “The eggplant rollatini with the tartufo for dessert.”
“Sounds delicious.” The waiter came back for their orders, bringing with him a bottle of wine that was so old its label was brittle and peeling away from the glass. He poured Tony a small amount, who tasted it and gave his approval, and then poured them both glasses. Bucky promised himself he would stop at the one glass – getting drunk tonight would be so stupid – but after he tasted the wine his conviction wavered. Whatever type of wine this was, even Bucky could taste that it was the Ferrari of booze. How often was he going to be wined and dined like this, after all? A bottle had what, like two glasses of wine apiece? He would be fine.
“So,” Tony said after the waiter left, crossing his arms and resting his elbows on the table. His eyes glinted with amusement. “Let’s talk about your five-year plan.”
Trying to smother a smile, Bucky crossed his arms as well. “Let’s talk about where you think your organization is going to be in five years, and I can tell you how I think I’ll fit into that plan.”
“Uh-huh,” Tony said skeptically. Then he sat up straight, cleared his throat and became what Bucky could only call Corporate Tony, face serious and tone strictly professional. “Well, I think this organization is best described as embarking on a period of rapid expansion while simultaneously consolidating the gains that we’ve made in the past few years. In many of our key industries we are working on horizontal and vertical integration in order to capitalize on economies of scale. Proceeds are invested back into the capital base and workforce, with the remainder being banked against future shortfalls. At the most recent shareholder meeting, members voted to waive the first quarter’s dividends in order to acquire assets for novel business ventures, putting us in a strong position for next year despite moderate economic headwinds.”
As Tony spoke, Bucky’s eyebrows climbed higher and higher. “Impressive,” he said. “You came up with that on the fly?”
“Well, I’ve been spinning bullshit to board members since I was old enough to vote, so I’ve had a lot of practice,” Tony said dryly, taking a sip of wine.
“Do you really have shareholders?”
“Yep. So many shareholders, for so many different businesses.”
“Is that-” Bucky was about to ask if the shareholder thing was related to the mysterious buy-in, but he reminded himself that he wasn’t working tonight. “Never mind. Well, the truth is, I don’t know where I’ll be in five years. The past few months have made me rethink a lot of things, and I’m trying to figure out my next step.”
“Oh?” Tony leaned forward again, gaze intent. “Want to talk about it?”
Bucky had self-preservation enough to know that talking about his crisis of conscience with the reason for that crisis was a bad idea. “Not just yet,” Bucky said. “I think
I think I need to figure out what I want, first.”
“Yeah, that’s usually a good first step.” Tony opened his mouth like he wanted to say something, but he closed it and took a sip of wine. “What would you like to talk about instead?”
The conversation paused as the server brought out an appetizer (“Courtesy of the Chef, he’s trying a new recipe”), the service amazingly fast given the crowd that Bucky knew was on the other side of the curtain. Guess that was one of the perks of dining with the Tony Stark.
“Do you still have time to invent?” Bucky asked when they were alone again, scooping some of the appetizer onto his plate. Looked like calamari. “Like robots and stuff?”
Bucky could tell that he’d caught Tony by surprise with the question. “Someone’s been looking me up on the internet,” Tony accused with a smile, pointing his fork at Bucky.
If Bucky was a lesser man, he would have blushed – googling Tony Stark on his phone before going to sleep had become a guilty habit, from the early articles about him when his parents were alive to his college exploits to the frequent scandals of his twenties. Between all those, however, were periodic articles in scholarly journals attributed to “T.E. Stark” and more substantial think pieces in popular science magazines. “I like knowing who I’m working for,” Bucky said defensively, feeling the back of his neck get hot.
“Uh-huh. I do still tinker in my spare time, what I have of it,” Tony said. “Right now I’m working mostly in artificial intelligence. I have one, his name is JARVIS, that I’ve been tinkering with since college. I think machine learning algorithms are fascinating.”
“I read up about some AI initiatives when I was in the Army,” Bucky said. “For targeting and whatnot.” He had read even more about it once he became a cop, and he wasn’t at all enthused with the projects he’d heard about. “What do you do with it? Him,” he corrected.
“JARVIS helps me with work,” Tony said vaguely, fidgeting with his silverware before spearing a piece of calamari. “I got into AI when Stark Industries got awarded a cybersecurity contract. I kind of ran with it after we fulfilled the contract and JARVIS was the result."
Bucky almost dropped his fork when he got hit with a startling suspicion. Helps me with work. Was Tony’s mysterious accountant, that no one had ever seen or spoken to, that was able to hide his money from every regulatory body in the US government, an AI? The implications were staggering, not just for the case but for the tech industry as a whole. Bucky covered for his stunned silence by eating, washing down the food he was barely tasting with expensive wine. The irony was not lost on him that he just had the biggest scoop of the operation so far, hours after he’d decided that he was quitting the case.
“So how about you? What do you do in your free time?” Tony asked, topping off their glasses.
Bucky stared at him across the table, brain blanking. It took so long for his brain to shift gears from thinking about JARVIS to trying to think of what he did in his spare time that Tony started to give him a funny look. “Uh, nothing special,” Bucky said after a minute. Googling his boss certainly wasn’t a hobby, after all. “After spending so much time in military cafeterias, I’ve been trying to get better at cooking. I work out, it’s a good release. Read. Visit museums when I can. One of my friends is trying to get me into indy games, but we can't play often.”
“That sounds nice. Gotta maintain that work-life balance, right?” Tony said. “Smart.” There was a soft chime and Tony pulled his phone out of his pocket. Bucky tensed; he’d forgotten about the raid until he saw Tony’s phone, having turned off his own ringer so that his notifications wouldn’t drive him crazy. He watched Tony’s face warily, wondering if the chime was related to the raid. Surely there would be a phone call, though? From his lawyer, or his security at the garage? But whatever the notification was, Tony just scanned it briefly and put his phone back in his pocket. “Sorry,” he apologized. “The boss is always on the job.”
“It’s fine,” Bucky said, smiling faintly, but the rhythm of the evening had been thrown off; thankfully their food came out and Tony got them back on track by asking about Bucky’s time in the Army, which got him on a roll of telling funny stories about the stupid things he’d seen as a sergeant. Turns out Rhodes, Tony’s right hand man, had been in the Air Force and Tony threatened to get him on the phone to defend himself against Bucky’s digs against the “chair force.” Before he knew it, dessert had come and gone, the bottle of wine was empty and their glasses had been replaced with tiny cups of espresso.  The sound on the other side of the curtain to the rest of the restaurant had died down considerably, and the check had been dropped off so subtly that Bucky hadn’t even noticed it until Tony picked it up and put a healthy stack of bills in it.
“Want to go for a walk?” Bucky said impulsively, not quite ready for the date that shouldn’t be a date to end.
“Can’t,” Tony said regretfully. “No long walks for me anymore, not in the city at least.”
“Right.” Given the number of enemies Tony had, it was risky enough for him to be out without more protection than just Bucky without parading himself up and down sidewalks. “Guess its time to go home, then.”
“I could take you home, yes.” Tony said slowly, lining up the silverware in what Bucky realized was a show of nerves. After a moment he pushed them aside and met Bucky’s eyes across the table. “Or
”
Bucky’s heart leapt. “Or?”
“Or we could do something that we shouldn’t.”
Bucky’s breath caught in his lungs. There was a hopeful and hungry look in Tony’s eyes that made Bucky flush hot and then cold. It would be such a mad, bad idea to go to bed with Tony Stark; if he got caught, he’d go down in NYPD as the casebook example for how to fuck up an undercover assignment. On the other hand, tomorrow he would be requesting reassignment and would never see Tony again, so there would be just this one night. He could have that, right? Just one night for himself, this one selfish thing he could have before he left for good?
“Okay,” Bucky said. His heart was racing and he suspected if he didn’t have his hands wrapped around his empty espresso cup they would be shaking. “Tony, would you like to have another drink with me at my place?”
“I’d love to,” Tony said with a smile.

It was always a good thing to get out of the house, especially to a place that felt like some kind of home. The tension at the ranch was starting to become too much and Cat just needed a little air to breathe. She was still attempting to wrap her mind around the idea that Raf didn’t hate her or find her completely out of her mind for her stunt a few weeks ago. The alcohol took the fall for that kiss which was fine with her so long as she didn’t have to be reminded of that moment for the rest of her life. Not that Lance was helping any as the two took a break at his temporary house, Cat lying against the couch letting her mind wander as Terminator 2 played. 
“Think I should start making some kind of dinner for us?” Cat asked hand feeling the kernels of the now empty bowl of popcorn. 
“Was under the impression we were doing pizza,” Lance said, eyes never leaving the television, “Thought your boyfriend Rafael was bringing some?”
Cat rolled her eyes, Kill me, “Yeah when he was planning on coming over,” she sat up, setting the bowl on the coffee table, “he canceled, remember.”
Lance took a sip from the beer bottle in his hand, a smile playing on his lips, “Not good boyfriend material if he cancels like that.”
“Would you stop with that?”
“Just looking out for you is all,” Lance laughed as a throw pillow came for his face, “That boy may think he’s perfection but-.”
“He’s still human and therefore impossible to be perfect,” Cat finished, tone laced with mockery. “I know that,” she scoffed, “but that stuff would only really matter if he was interested in me. He’s fine with our relationship as is so therefore I am too.”
Lance laughed, spitting up a little of his drink, “And I’m set to win the lotto.” Cat narrowed her eyes, mouth ready to argue when the sound of a bike overtook the sounds of gunfire from the movie. Lance let out a sigh, “I sure hope that kid slowed down to park in the garage this time.”
“Wes? Slowing down?” Cat smiled, “The day he does you better buy a lotto ticket.” 
She opened the front door, hearing the clattering of a shelf falling, “How in the hell does he manage to hit the same damn shelf every time?”
Cat looked up at Lance, raising a brow, “Maybe you should move it Old Man.”
“I have,” he let out a breath, “Come on let’s go get him.” The two walked into the garage, watching as Wes pulled off the helmet, shaking out his hair, “I thought you were a pro on that thing?”
“I am,” Wes answered looking at the fallen shelf and its contents, “It jumped out at me.”
“Uh-huh, sure Wes,” Cat laughed, eyes assessing him, widening in horror, “Oh my god!”
The two men looked up at her change in pitch, “What?”
“Wes-. You-. How-. Wes- You’re-.” He lifted an arm looking down his body, meeting her eyes as he pointed to the dark stain on his shirt, “Are you? Is that blood?!” 
He gave a shrug, Lance moving to take a closer look, “Probably.”
“Probably. Wes! You are literally bleeding!”
Lance gave a small shake of his head, “Yeah, but that doesn’t matter right now. What does matter is-.”
“Is I took down that big ol’ YES sign,” Wes finished triumphantly.
Cat’s shoulders sagged, “Let me guess you’re homemade explosives?” Wes nodded, Lance pushing him towards the house. “Wes,” she glanced up to the mountain watching as the black smoke rose, heart falling as she placed a smile on her face, “Good job taking that eyesore down.” It's not that she didn’t want to see that Hollywood wannabe gone but it did mean John would be in an even more sour mood. Never a danger to herself, but it didn’t make for very pleasant conversation either given her friendships. 
If Wes noticed anything a miss with her, he didn’t get much of a chance to voice it, “What I was going to say was that we need more of an actual dinner,” Lance continued, ushering his two children inside.
“You want to go and get pizza,” Cat asked.
“I’m going to get pizza while you clean him up,” Lance picked up his canvas jacket and car keys gesturing to Wes, “Now before you say anything you can stitch him up just fine. I’ve shown you how and seen you do it.” 
“But-.”
“If you mess up I’ll just open them and do it myself,” Lance lowered his voice, eyes watching as Wes took out the first aid kit, laying the towel out on the couch, “‘Sides I think you should talk to him. He’s holding something in and he ain’t going to talk to me about it.”
Cat exhaled through her nose, nodding, shutting the door behind Lance, gathering a bowl of warm water and some rags. “You think it's a good or bad thing that you know exactly what to do when you come over after your injuries?” Cat joked, sitting next to Wes on the couch tossing the dirtied shirt to the side.
“Depends on who you ask really,” Wes paused the movie before he moved, giving Cat a better look at the wound. It wasn’t as deep as the amount of blood would indicate but still was a few inches long moving along his right ribs. Cat set the bowl in his lap, gentle in her movements as she cleaned the blood away, “Might be some shrapnel still.”
“I’ll pick out what I can,” he flinched, letting out a yelp, making Cat jump. Wes laughed, “Don’t do that,” she chastised, lightly hitting his arm, “You know you’re just gonna give me a heart attack one of these days.”
“You were being too serious,” Cat picked up the tweezers spotting the small glimmer of metal.
“Cause I’m concentrating,” Cat pulled back grabbing the bottle of alcohol, “This is gonna sting.” Wes sat still as she brought the soaked cloth to the open wound, “I’m still not one hundred percent used to this kind of first aid.”
“Here I thought you were certified.”
“Yeah for the basics,” she snorted, “Other than that it had to be left to the real medical staff.” She gave a small smile, “Only thing I can really claim competency in is healing the mind.” Wes grew silent, turning his head away from her as she gathered the needle and thread, Cat’s smile fading, “You know you don’t have to keep it all in. Suffering alone isn’t a good thing.”
“You let Raf do it,” he countered, lifting his arm to rest on the back of the sofa.
“Don’t think I wouldn’t or won’t get on his case too,” she winced as the needle pierced his skin, pausing to take in Wes. He stayed still through it, calming the shaking wanting to start in her hands, “And if we’re being honest I let you get away with a lot more than him.” He gave a smirk, “So the YES sign,” the smirk evaporating quickly, “You and John still-.”
“Don’t,” he said quickly, “I’m not talking about that.”
So much for Lance’s belief, Cat nodded, “Okay. We don’t have too.” Silence fell as she worked on the stitches, slower than was necessary, but she didn’t want to make a mistake forcing Wes to have to go through the process again. She was nearing the last two needed when Wes shifted, “Careful, I don’t want to hurt you on accident.”
“You ever think about us?”
“Like what we’ll do after this whole thing is over,” she gave pause, pursing her lips, “Or do you mean that night?” Cat glanced up at his face, unreadable, “Because I thought we were never going to talk about it.”
“Guess it does play into it,” he mused, “But no. I mean us as in you and me. Together.”
Oh, Cat concentrated on the last stitch picking her words carefully, “Why does that matter to you all of a sudden? Did it get real bad with John this time?”
“Humor me,” he answered, ignoring her question.
Cat let out a sigh, wiping at the now closed wound, “Guess I’d be lying if I said it never crossed my mind.”
“Had ample opportunity to act on it,” he tilted his head, eyes following as she put everything away.
“I said it crossed my mind,” she gave a smirk, “not that it was anything more serious than that.” Cat got up from the sofa quickly hiding the small blush that was coming to her cheeks, grabbing a new shirt for Wes, tossing it his way, “I don’t think we’d work out in the long run in a romantic way.”
He pulled the shirt on, careful of the stitches on his ribs, “What makes you say that?” 
His face took on a hurt expression, hands looking for something to mess with, shoulders slumped over. Her face softened, lightly touching his shoulder as she sat next to him, “I say that because you deserve better than me.” The corners of Cat’s lips turned upward into a quick smile as she watched his mouth start to open in protest, “Let me explain what I mean before you start trying to correct me.”
His golden eyes glanced her way before giving a quick nod, Cat settled herself more going over her thought process. “Don’t get me wrong Wes, we’d be happy, on top of the world, and so in love that people would get cavities just being in proximity,” she grabbed his hand, “But that love isn’t sustainable, not for either of us. When you love someone like that, you have to feel like there’s a balance in all aspects.” 
“I feel like you do sometimes,” Wes said softly.
“And there it is, sometimes. Wes it has to be all the time. You and I don't have balance where it’s most important.” Cat paused, “We both are very giving in nature and in turn will take whatever is given back to us because we need to feel some kind of connection. We would have too much of that and we need people that will tell us when to stop.” She turned his face towards hers, “Wes I can’t ever really say no to you and that’s not what you need in a long term partner. Sure from a friend it's okay but not when it comes to life long commitment. Does that make sense?”
Wes gave a shrug, “A little.”
“In essence you need someone that will challenge you, make you see life a little differently so you can grow into it the way you were meant to. I’m more of a support while you figure that out, I can try but I know I won’t be the best at it, not in the way that you need.” Cat looked down to his hand in hers, continuing, “I’m also not someone you deserve because there are some things about you that I could never fully and truly understand. I can empathize with so many things Wes, but there are some life experiences that I can only sympathize with and you need and deserve someone that can.”
“Someone like, John,” Cat nodded, “It doesn’t feel the same with him, not like how you love me.”
“No two loves are going to feel the same, Wes,” she countered, “I love both you, Raf, and Lance the same amount and I’ll tell you now each one feels different. Lance is protective, stable, and parental like my own dad. That feeling of being noticed when you’re lost from your parents at a busy mall, you trust them because they have kind eyes and stay until your parents come back for you. Raf is structure, helpful, and,” All consuming, “consistent. Like testing to see if a video game has fall damage and then the relief when you find out that it doesn’t because you now know the parachute is going to open each time just before you hit the ground. It also feels like light that someone left behind just for you.”
“You though,” Cat looked up into his eyes, “that love feels soft, warm, hopeful, and like peace, our own little treehouse overlooking the field behind a house. It's hard to describe just right but it's something you come back to because there's a sense of safety in it that can only come from that one place. That’s what it feels like for me to love you.” She smiled, “I bet if you really look at all the people that you love and care for you’ll find that each one feels different in some way and that’s okay. That’s kind of how it's supposed to be.”
“How do you know which one’s the right one?” Wes looked at her expectantly as Cat searched for the feelings that had her marrying Theo. Searching for the right word that would convey the unique feeling into something that could resonate with Wes. Some way that would be easy to understand and simplify the complexity.
“You’ll feel
.some kind of
.whole.” 
“Whole,” he repeated.
“Yeah, whole,” she smiled as his face showed signs of disbelief and confusion, “Every person that you love and loves you in return contributes to this puzzle that is you, but there will be spaces open for that one person that will complete the whole thing. That can be yourself, a friend, or a romantic partner. Once they’re there, you won’t really feel like there are any open spaces left, you’ll feel whole.”
“You think people can find it again if they lose it?” Wes asked eyes flicking down for a millisecond to the leather bracelet Cat moved to cover up on instinct at the question. 
Her fingers playing with the metal circle, “I want to believe so. That answer though is up to you at that point.”
Wes let out a huff sitting back in the chair, eyes turned upward at the ceiling, “Not really meant to be simple is it,” Cat stayed silent, watching him, “This is why feelings are the worst.”
“Well we have them and we can’t really put them back,” Cat laughed, “Just give it some time Wes. You’ll figure it all out in the end, just have to remember to not run away this time.”
“Nah, couldn’t do that to you Catnip,” he turned smirking, “Pretty sure you’d follow me and drag me back.”
She shook her head, “Not what I meant, Wes. You’re right, but not what I meant.” Wes waved her words off, Cat exhaling slowly, “Well I think that’s enough therapy for the night.” Cat stood moving to the table holding stacks of tapes and dvds, “Music or movie while we wait for dinner?”
“Movie? You pick though.”
“Your suffering Brooks,” Cat mumbled, looking through settling on The Goonies. “Here this one shouldn’t be so bad.”
He glanced at the summary on the back of the case, “A bunch of kids go treasure hunting?”
“Yeah,” she answered, loading the movie, “So many quotable parts about that movie! Trust me you’ll have a good time.” Wes shook his head settling into the couch more as Cat took her place laying her head in his lap. His fingers started to run through her hair as the car chase began in the movie, “Wes, you may forget your worth and what you deserve, but I never will,” she looked up to his face, “So I’ll remind you until it sticks in that big brain of yours.”

i was thinking of the comedic possibilites that @charlesbeckendorf brought up so heres some clareyna content
the funny thing is - reyna was late. fundamentally, she did not get along with the concept of being late to things, but since she’d just finished traveling across half the planet via shadow travel, fought a giant, and helped finish a war she figured she was allowed to take her time a bit when it came to packing up and heading home. 
what piper had said about camp half blood having it’s doors open if she wanted a break...reyna was thinking about it. she loved new rome and with her history she didn’t know what living in simple peace might be like. while camp half blood wasn’t the mortal world, it was far less strict than the legion. besides, she’d had to deal with the majority of the people who put her in the position of praetor try to toss her aside when octavian promised blood.
reyna wasn’t sure what it would be like returning to new rome. so maybe she was dragging her feet a bit. she was walking through the camps to meet the waiting romans when she ran into clarisse. 
during the battle reyna had seen clarisse fight, she was truly very talented with her spear and. well, piper’s conversation had reyna’s brain turning. in the light and day away from a battle, clarisse was still as beautiful as she had been taking down monsters. she felt she could maybe be excused for tripping into a beautiful girl. 
“hey,” clarisse said, helping reyna back onto her feet. reyna brushed her hand against clarisse’s arms and swallowed at the feeling of hard muscle. “you okay there?”
reyna nodded, smiling up at clarisse, “oh of course, thank you so much for helping me back up.”
clarisse blinked at her, “uh yeah, no problem. aren’t the romans clearing out right now?”
“oh yeah, but they can wait a bit,” reyna said, taking another step closer to clarisse. “what’s your name? i’m reyna.”
“uh, i’m clarisse. you’re the leader of the romans, right? i don’t think they can leave without you.”
“well, i think they can wait a bit longer, so clarisse i saw you destroy that cyclops a few days ago. really impressive stuff, i could’ve mistaken you for a roman.” reyna reached out for clarisse’s hand, and threaded their fingers together. 
that, apparently, was the right thing to say because clariess lights up. “oh yeah! hedge was telling me about how you took no prisoners and shit when you were in puerto rico with the hunters and the amazons...and he told me about how you wore topical shirts for half the trip.” then, clarisse pauses as if she’s thinking about something very seriously. 
clarisse started to smile back at her, “well daughter of ares and everything. i’m kinda good at wars. really though, the whole athena parthenos thing is way more impressive.”
"i had help from nico and coach hedge though," reyna admits.
reyna’s never needed the spotlight, but she can’t say she doesn’t appreciate it right now. “it was cool i guess, coach hedge and nico were great.”
“so, um. tropical shirts for both you and death boy,”“ clarisse is blushing now and reyna thinks this is one of the popular media things she misses out on when running an army. but, she’s willing to run with it blindfolded for as long as she can to see where it goes. 
“yeah,” reyna says with a wink. clarisse blinks wildly at that. “it really grew on me, i’m thinking about getting one that wasn’t stolen from a tourist trap.”
clarisse smiles slowly, “cute.”
reyna titls her head and smiles back, squeezing clarisse’s hand. “you think so?”
well,” clarisse says. “you’re beautiful, actually. but, you probably know that.” 
oh. reyna’s never quite known what people said when they talked about butterflies in their stomachs but, clarisse’s smile and honest expression when she calls her beautiful? reyna suddenly understands what the big deal about liking someone is. “not as handsome as you,” reyna tells clarisse, it’s the easiest thing in the world to say because it’s true. 
clarisse bites her lip and nods, “can i iris message you when you head back to your fancy roman city? it’s a big distance and all, but i do have a fancy flying chariot i can visit in.”
“yeah,” reyna says softly. “i’d like that a lot.”
clarisse starts to lean down and reyna feels hot because she thinks clarisse is going to-
“reyna!” comes frank’s voice, all the way over by the tree on the hill. “what are you doing? you’re like half an hour late. you're never late.”
reyna takes a deep breath and summons up all the patience she’s had to learn from being a praetor and shouts back at the top of her lungs, “frank zhang give me two minutes!”
frank makes some sort of hand gesture, maybe a thumbs up, before disapearring back below the hill. reyna sighs and turns back to clarisse, who’s let go of her hand. the taller girl looks a little awkward and reyna frowns at that, awkward doesn’t fit clarisee quite right. 
she leans up on her toes and kisses clarisse’s cheek gently, “don’t forget to iris message me, okay? i don’t know how to send them myself yet.”
clarisse’s hand lifts up to tuch her cheek and she looks at reyna with such a soft look in her eyes and reyna feels like her bodies on fire. “yeah,” clarisse says. “you better be waiting by the line.”
reyna smiles at her again and then she goes to rejoin the rest of the legion, but before she runs off to make sure they haven’t tried to mutiny again she gives clarisse a long slow look over and winks. clarisse stutters after her and reyna thinks that this is maybe the best way this could’ve all ended. maybe she'll try to be late more often.

Do you have any headcanons of Chris recovering from the Labyrinth? Was a Clarisse there when he woke up? How did he react to his friends being dead?
In the decade he’d suffered at camp, Dionysus had never actually been inside his own cabin. He had been close to his sons, but didn’t offer them preferential treatment. And they were teenage boys, they didn’t need their dad hanging out in their room. 
Dionysus couldn’t pretend that he was a normal father, even if he was around for his sons more than the other gods were. 
Today, though, he feared he had to try. 
He knocked on the door, but there was no answer. That was to be expected. His son was deep in grief. He opened the door, and found his son curled up on his bed, purple curtains drawn shut, so the only light in the room what what streamed in from the open door. 
“Get out!” Pollux yelled at him, his voice heavy with grief. He threw an empty wine bottle at Dionysus. He didn’t know where his seventeen-year-old son had gotten it, but he couldn’t begrudge him for turning to it now. It wasn’t a healthy habit, but Castor and Lee had just died. Dionysus had seen a lot in three thousand years, but he had never lost a brother and a partner in one day. 
“Please, I want to help you.” Dionysus said. 
“Well you can’t. No one can.” Pollux pulled his knees into his chest and started to cry again. Dionysus ignored his pleas for solitude and walked into the cabin. He sat on his bed and pulled his son into a hug. To his surprise, his son embraced him and hugged him tighter as he cried. 
After a few minutes, his son looked at him. “If you really want to help, you need to show the kids here that the gods do care.” He said. “We were just decimated, and none of you were there to help.” 
“What should I do?” Dionysus said. 
“Heal Chris,” he said. 
“You want me to heal him?” Dionysus asked. “After what he did?” 
Pollux nodded. “He’s still my friend. Prove to us, to me, that the gods care and that they can be forgiving.” Pollux said. “He deserves a second chance.” 
“Would you say the same thing about Luke Castilian? He was your friend too.” 
Pollux shook his head. “Chris didn’t get Castor and Lee killed. He never finished his mission in the Labyrinth. He didn’t help do this.” 
Dionysus nodded. “Consider it done.”

Clarisse ran to the Big House when Will told her that Dionysus had agreed to heal Chris. 
She opened the door to the infirmary. Dionysus was gone, but Chiron was looking over him. 
“Dionysus healed him,” Chiron said, “but it may still take some time for him to wake up.” 
Clarisse didn’t say anything. She just pulled over a chair and assumed her spot at his bedside. 
Two hours later, Chris opened his eyes. He tried to sit up, but Chiron moved quickly to assist him. Chris grumbled something, but his voice was hoarse and dry. “Here,” Chiron said, offering him a spoon-full of nectar, followed by a cup of water with a bendy straw. 
“What happened?” He asked finally. “Am I at ... camp?” He looked over to Clarisse, who was looking at him like he had returned from the dead. Clarisse? He hadn’t seen her in months. Not since he left .... But she looked a lot older than he remembered. A lot stronger too. 
Chiron nodded. “You were in the Labyrinth. Some memories of it may return in the next few days. You’ve been sick for quite some time.” 
“How long?” 
“It’s been almost a year since we found you.” Chiron said. Chris gasped and leaned back against the pillows, his head reeling. “Easy, easy,” Chiron said, “you’re still healing. I’ll explain everything soon.”Chiron looked at Clarisse. “In the mean time, you may want to start with thanking Miss. la Rue here for taking care of you. You owe her your life.” 
Clarisse stood up from her chair. “He can keep it,” she said. “I’ve seen it, and i’m not impressed.”  She stormed out of the room, suddenly overwhelmed with an anger she didn’t even know she was harboring. 
Chiron shook his head. “She’ll come around. Don’t worry,” he told Chris. “Now, you should keep resting. In a few hours, perhaps you’ll be strong enough to manage a bath.”

Chiron found Clarisse in his office. She was sitting on his couch, sobbing. He had seen her like this a number of times over the last year. He tried not to think of the campers as his children, it always made things harder, but it was hard to not develop a parental affection for the year-round campers. Her, Annabeth, the Stoll’s ... they were closer to him than most campers. 
“What’s wrong, dear?” He asked her. “I thought you’d be happier.”
“I thought I would be. I don’t ...” she hesitated. “I don’t know. I think it’s just ...”
“It must be overwhelming,” Chiron said, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. 
She nodded and tried to force herself to stop crying, but it didn’t work. 
Chiron walked over to the mini-fridge in the office and pulled out a water bottle. He handed it to her, and she took it thankfully. “Would you like to talk about it?” Clarisse shook her head, which Chiron expect from her. “Alright. Feel free to stay in here until you feel better.” She nodded. 
“Thanks.” 
“Of course,” he said. “And Clarisse,” she looked up at him, “everything will be okay. I know how much you care for him.” She blushed as Chiron left the room.

Clarisse put down her book when she heard a knock at the Ares cabin door. She opened it and saw Chris, standing there sheepishly. She almost closed the door on them, but he held up his hand. 
“Clarisse, please let me in. I want to apologize!” He said. 
She opened the door for him and let him in. She hadn’t seen him in a day, not since he’d woken up. He was still very thin, but there was more color in his cheeks. His hair wasn’t the shiny black use to be, but the matted parts had been cut out. He smiled at her when she let him in, and his smiled was the same as it had always been. It was nice to see him smile again. She was almost tempted to smile back at him. 
He stepped into the cabin. “Chiron told me what you did for me. And what happened to me. And about the battle, and I ...” he paused. “’I’m sorry’ and ‘thank you’ don’t really cover what I feel.” He admitted. 
She crossed her arms and stepped closer to him. “Well, do your best.”
He looked at the ground. “I’m so fucking sorry. For leaving you and camp. For putting you through that. For being on the side that --” his words faltered. “Pollux came to see me,” he said, “and he seemed pretty devastated.” He took a deep breath. “But he said he forgave me. So I figured, if he could forgive me, then maybe ...” 
Clarisse wanted to yell at him. To tell him that she didn’t forgive him and that she never would. But those were all lies. She had forgiven him when she found him in Arizona. 
She pushed down her impulse to lie to him, to hurt him, and instead she hugged him. He hugged her back, holding on tightly. It didn’t take long for Clarisse to realize he was crying, and soon she was crying, which she couldn’t believe. She so rarely even wanted to cry, now she had cried twice in two days. 
When he realized she was crying he started to laugh. “Wow, I must have been in pretty dire straits if I made you cry.” 
She pushed him away. “Shut up,” she said, heading towards the Ares Cabin bathroom for some toilet paper. She blew her nose and came back with some for him. 
“Thanks,” he said. He was looking at her like he didn’t recognize her - a look she had become use to. 
“Everything okay?” She asked. 
“Yeah,” he said, breaking his gaze. “I just haven’t seen you in so long. You look different.” She frowned, her ears getting red. “No, like, a good different.” 
She smiled. “Thanks, I think.” 
Chris rubbed the back of his neck. “Anyway, Pollux and Beckendorf invited me to the strawberry fields to catch me up on what I missed, if you’d like to come. I figured you’d be the best one to tell me all the embarrassing stuff I did the last three months.” 
She smiled and nodded. “Trust me, I’ve got plenty to share.” She took his hand and led him out of the cabin.

Rainbow
A solangelo fic, based of the song Rainbow by Kesha, the fic is partly just the lyrics, 
Word Count: 1,540
Nico walked through the camp the sunlight warming his body scaring away any remains of the shadows that still tried to overtake him years after the war with Gaea. He walked into the armory and grabbed a bow, then turned to walk to the archery range. Though he usually didn't fight bows he had been challenged by a young draught of Apollo. The ten-year-old girl was already there standing with her hands crossed over her body. 
"Ready Nico?" She asked with a smirk, though she was a child compared to Nico, she was one hell of an archer. She had long blond hair that hung down her back in twin french braids. She had light brown eyes and freckles all over her face. Though she looked like a daughter of Apollo she had the temper of the Ares children. 
"Whenever you are, Alice," Nico said walking over to the target beside the girl. He spread his feet apart with his toes pointing parallel with the target. He turned his head at the target and drew in a breath. Alice did the same through she stood was facing Nico holding her handcrafted left-handed bow carefully. They both notched an arrow and pulled back. The drawn string was tight with tension. Nico let go of his first, it landed in the red around the bullseye. Alice waited for a few beats then let hers fly. It landed almost directly in the middle. They continued until their quivers were empty. 
"Good try," Alice said turning towards Nico with a too-large smile. 
"Thanks..." Nico said, Alice had challenged him and had said if she won she would be able to put one of Apollos curses on him though it could only last for 24 hours. Nico should have said no but was weak to her puppy eyes. "So what's my punishment?" Alice smiled darkly and began to recite something in Ancient Greek. Nico frowned realizing that it wasn't one he had heard before. It sounded like the singing curse but different. That one caused the victim to only be able to sing anything they wanted to say. It was at that moment that Nico remembered Alice was somehow connected to the goddess Veritas. 
Nico felt Alice's magic settle into him as she finished the curse. Nico gave Alice a question look not wanting to risk saying anything. 
"It's a truth signing curse!" She said smiling brightly at him. "For the next 24 hours, you will only be able to sing and tell the truth. Well, I got to get back to my cabin, bye!" Alice said running off towards her cabin. Nico's pulse started racing as the memory of Eros forcing him to reveal his feelings rose to the top of his mind. It wasn't Alice's fault, Nico thought, she didn't know what happened. Nico sucked in a breath and began to run to his cabin. With truth spells, you could either stay silent unless someone asked a direct question that had no room for interpretation, if that happened then Nico would have no choice but to sing the truth. 
Nico made It back into his cabin and slammed the door closed and went to sit in the back of his cabin, If he couldn't hear their questions then he couldn't answer them.

Nico was woken up by a knock at his door. He looked around the room in a panic then realized he was in the Hades cabin. The light from the moon shined in through the windows and Nico could hear the distant sound of people singing at the campfire. The cabins were quiet though meaning that Nico could hear the person on the other side of the door. 
"You okay Nico? I know that Alice put a course on you but it shouldn't have hurt," Nico decided to ignore parts of the question and answer the part about it hurting. No, it didn't cause physical pain. 
"I'm fine will, you can leave," Nico said in a sing-song voice. He didn't want Will to leave but he said that Will had the capability to leave, which Will did. 
"Singing curse? Or something else" Will asked softly through the still-closed door. 
"Singing and truth," Nico said before he could stop himself. Will went quiet outside, a few minutes pasted as Will realized what that meant. Will had helped Nico through his nightmares all the time so when they started dating it was only a matter of time before Will would learn about the incident with Eros. When he had he called Nico brave and told him how much he loved him. 
"Do you want me to come in or leave?" Will asked softly not moving from his spot at the steps into the Hades cabin. 
"Please don't leave," Nico said cringing at the sound of his voice. It wasn't like Nico had a bad voice, he just wasn't used to singing. Will had said that his voice sounded like an angel's. Nico blushed at the memories. Will walked into the cabin and over to Nico and slid onto the floor where he was sitting. Nico's face was clogged with dozens of emotions and memories that swirled in his head and eyes. Nico had been thinking deeply for half an hour before Will spook again. 
"Do you want to talk about something?" Will asked. Nico felt everything he had been thinking surge forward into a song. I wrote a song in 10 seconds all because of one question. Impressive work Alice. Before he could stop himself he started singing.
"I used to live in the darkness
Dress in black, act so heartless
But now I see that colors are everything
Got kaleidoscopes in my hairdo
Got back the stars in my eyes, too
Yeah, now I see the magic inside of me," 
Will had wrapped his arms around Nico as the magic tore through the son of Hades. Nico smiled softly as he continued.
"Yeah, maybe my head's fucked up
But I'm falling right back in love with being alive
Dreaming in light, light, lights
This kitty cat lost his mind
Been looking for a star-sent sign that I'll be alright
Look to the skies."
Nico straightened up and closed his eyes as he felt life wash around him. He closed his eyes concentrating only on the lyrics not wanting the magic to make him call himself a cat again.  
"I've found a rainbow, rainbow, baby
Trust me, I know, life is scary
But just put those colors on, boy
Come and play along with me tonight."
Nico squeezed his boyfriend's hand and looked into his bright blue eyes and smiled. 
"I'd forgot how to daydream
So consumed with the wrong things
But in the dark, I realized this life is short
And deep down, I'm still a child
Playful eyes, wide and wild
I can't lose hope, what's left of my heart's still made of gold.
And I know that I'm still fucked up."
Tears had started to slip down Nico's face, and just as Nico was about to continue singing Will brook in and continued the song for him. 
"But aren't we all, my love?
Darling, our scars make us who we are, are
So when the winds are howling strong
And you think you can't go on, hold tight, sweetheart."
Nico felt his cheeks heat up as Will wiped away the tear streaks and smiled at him. His smile outshined Apollo himself. 
"You'll find a rainbow, rainbow, baby
Trust me, I know life is scary
But just put those colors on, boy
Come and play along with me tonight."
Will wasn't the best singer in the Apollo cabin or in camp but Nico would not have had anyone else. Will was sweet and had helped Nico in every way possible after the war. Nico didn't feel the urge to sing, but one to stay quiet and listen to his boyfriend who was still smiling warmly at him. 
"You gotta learn to let go, put the past behind you
Trust me, I know, the ghosts will try to find you
But just put those colors on, boy
Come and paint the world with me tonight."
Nico smiled at his boyfriend who had stopped singing and started lovingly at him. Nico then wrapped his arms around Will's shoulders as the taller male wrapped his around Nico's waist then they pulled each other into a soft kiss. Will could still taste the salt on Nico's lips as he smiled into the kiss. Nico pulled away smiling as he continued singing.
"I found a rainbow, rainbow, baby
Trust me, I know life is scary
But just put those colors on, boy."
Will draped his arms around Nico's waist as he interfered for the second time.
"You gotta learn to let go, put the past behind you
Trust me, I know, the ghosts will try to find you
But just put those colors on, boy

Nico pulled Will into a hug placing his head on the son of Apollos shirt as he softly finished the song.

Animal Magnetism - Ch.1
Edward Cullen was not a normal teenager; of that I was certain. But knowing that did nothing to stop the pull I felt towards him. And if what he was saying was any indication, he felt some strange pull towards me, too. It was like we were magnets struggling against hope to stay apart. I only wondered what would happen when we inevitably collided.

I sat up in bed and looked around my new-old room, the white comforter bunched up around my waist. Once upon a time, this had been my nursery. Of course the walls, painted a light lilac color, were dark in the dingy grey light streaming through the window. No surprise, it was raining outside.
I had been in this city for all of two days and already more rain had fallen than I had seen in my entire time down in Phoenix. Rain wasn't a bad thing in small, reasonable doses. But nonstop it was suffocating. I just had to remind myself to take deep breaths and everything would be fine. I closed my eyes and let the cool air fill my lungs before I forcefully blew it back out.
"Bella, honey, you have to come down soon or you'll be late for school!" Renee's voice drifted in through my locked bedroom door and I flopped back down against my pillow, and threw my arm over my eyes in an attempt to ignore her. "Bella, get up."
I forced a cough just loud enough for her to hear me through the door. "I'm not feeling too well. I think the climate here doesn't really agree with me. Maybe I should just move back to Phoenix. You and Dad are more than welcome to stay here, though."
Renee was silent for a moment and I could just imagine her guilty expression. She knew how I felt about this move and for the past few days, I had been playing heavily on her guilty conscience. It wasn't my normal go-to, but I figured if there was a chance it might work, then it was worth trying.
Suddenly, my door swung open – I guessed Charlie had a key to every door in this house laying around somewhere – and Renee was standing there, her expression no longer guilty; now she was annoyed.
"Get out of bed right now," Renee exclaimed, standing there in the doorway. I could feel my eyes widen in surprise as she yelled at me. "I have spent the past sixteen years of my life alone and I am just trying to fix some of my biggest mistakes. I am sorry that you had to leave your friends behind, but I am tired of doing everything by myself. The least you can do – really, honestly, the bare minimum – is get up and get dressed for school!"
I didn't think it was particularly fair of her to imply that she had been working alone all this time. She had my help, and we were always such a good team.
"I am happy that you and Dad are back together," I said in a very small voice. "But Forks? Why couldn't Dad move in with us? Mom, don't you miss the sun?"
God, I missed the sun.
"Bella, I am sorry that we had to uproot you from Phoenix, but your father has an established career here. He's the Police Chief, for God's sake! He couldn't just walk away from that and start over somewhere else. He needs to be here." Renee's voice softened as she spoke and tenderness filled her eyes as she sat on the edge of my bed. "And we need to be here with him. I'm sorry, honey, but you're going to school here."
"Maybe you need to be here with him, but I don't," I grumbled. Renee's face tightened and some of the tenderness left her as she guessed what my next statement would be. "Why can't I just stay with one of my friends? Madison already offered, and I'll come back for vacations

Renee stood from the bed, bringing my grumbling to an abrupt halt. The annoyance re-entered her expression. "If you aren't out of that bed and getting ready for school in five minutes, Isabella Swan, I swear you will regret it."
Less than an hour later, I found myself in the front seat of Renee's car, my arms crossed over my chest as I glared out at the school in front of me. I didn't understand why there were so many buildings when there were only a couple hundred students in attendance, all of whom seemed to be crowded under the awning right outside my window gawking at me.
"Oh, Bella, stop pouting," Renee pleaded, but I rolled my eyes and stepped out of the car without responding and slammed the door behind me as I hitched my bag more firmly over my shoulder and trudged through the rain towards the office, praying I wouldn't slip and fall.
I managed to reach the building without humiliating myself and, trying my hardest to ignore the curious looks I was getting from my new peers, pulled open the door to the office and walked up to the front desk. The receptionist, a portly woman with a stiff red bob was on the phone and signaled for me to wait a minute, so I stood there patiently, drumming my fingers on the desk in front of me. I looked around, trying to gain my bearings and immediately regretted it as I locked eyes with more than one curious student milling around under the cover of the large awning that extended from the office towards the small courtyard; I supposed if not for my arrival, it would have been your typical morning here.
I started to turn away in avoidance of all this unwanted attention, but something caught my eye and held my attention outside of the office. There were five
 people – students, I guessed, though I would have thought that impossible were it not for the book bags each of them was carrying – standing in the far corner, closest to edge of the awning. They all stood out from the rest of students around them.
Their skin was pale, paler than anyone else's in this sunless hell-hole. They were all devastatingly beautiful and I let my eyes wander over each of them. The first one my gaze was drawn to was huge, a giant of a man. He looked more like a professional football player than a student. His curly hair was a dark brown. I'd never thought the word beautiful could possibly apply to a man so large and brawny, but he certainly was.
Standing next to him in a clearly possessive fashion was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. Her thick blond hair cascaded down her shoulders, curling inward at the ends. She stood only an inch or so shorter than her football player counterpart. One word came to mind as I studied her: confidence. She was the type of woman who knew how gorgeous she was, and owned it.
Next was a tall blond-haired man. He was muscular, but nowhere near as built as the first guy, and taller. He looked like the most reserved of the group, eyes angled downward, sort of like he was nervous, but it seemed every muscle in his boy was tense, anticipating. Something about him just screamed danger, like at any given minute he may spring into action and lay waste to us all. He, of all his companions, seemed to want least to be here.
Next to him was a cute miniature person. Her hair was black as midnight, cropped short; it just reached her collarbone and spiked out in every direction. Out of all of them, she looked most comfortable standing there as she turned her head to speak to the blond boy, her lips moving so quickly I was sure I wouldn't have caught a word she'd said if I were standing right next to her. The boy she spoke to didn't even glance at her, but shook his head in response to whatever she said and I got the impression that he was rather bothered by her words. She watched him for a moment before turning to walk away from the group, her gait smooth and graceful and every bit the way a ballerina might move across a stage, until she suddenly froze, her gaze going blank as she stared ahead of her.
The blond boy moved quickly to her and placed a hand beneath her elbow to steer her back toward the group as the other couple continued to stare away from her, looking totally uninterested in whatever was going on with their friend. None of the other students milling around seemed to notice anything that these five were doing and they seemed to like it that way.
It seemed that whatever had happened was over already. Her lips were moving quickly again. None of her companions were looking at her, but I had the distinct impression they were all listening carefully. Confused, I turned to the fifth member of the strange group, surprised when my eyes met his dark ones. His bronze hair was disheveled, almost falling into his eyes, but it was too short to obscure them. He was tall and lanky, just barely taller than the blond boy, and much thinner, but it seemed to me that he was still very strong, just less obviously so than the other two boys. His tan sweater hugged his chest and biceps, straining just enough to hint at the musculature beneath. I forced my eyes back up to study his face more closely and was struck by the realization that he was absolutely stunning. All of the five were startlingly beautiful, but this boy's good looks far surpassed the rest. Even the perfect blond girl was less stunning than he.
Suddenly, I realized that the eyes of each and every one of them were on me and I blushed, and dropped my gaze to the floor as I turned quickly to look at the receptionist, who had just hung up the phone.
"Can I help you, dear?" she asked, looking at me expectantly. I cleared my throat, still embarrassed to be caught staring, and nodded.
"Yes. I'm new here. I just need to get my schedule," I said softly.
"Ah. You must be Isabella Swan," the receptionist said. She picked up a piece of paper on her desk and studied it briefly.
"Bella. Yes," I said, trying to reign in the flash of annoyance at the sound of my full name.
"Bella Swan," she corrected herself, holding the paper out to me. "Here you go. This is your class scheduled and a map of the school. You should be able to find your way around, but if you need help, I'm sure any of your peers would be thrilled to show you around. I hope you have a good first day here at Forks High."
I took the paper from her with a murmured thanks and a forced smile before I turned around. I immediately noticed that the mysterious group was still there, but only two of them were looking at me still: the beautiful boy with the bronze hair and the small, waif-like girl.
She looked apprehensive as she watched me push the door open and the boy looked frustrated, confused
 and a bit pained. Though they looked casual, and all were staring off in different directions, I did notice that each of his companions had moved, surrounding him almost protectively. The two muscular boys were on either side of him, their backs to me, and the blond girl was standing directly in front of him, angled sideways with her shoulder almost touching his chest. Only the small pixie-like creature who was also watching me hadn't moved from where she stood behind him. It almost looked like they were blocking him in, not protecting him, I realized. Protecting everyone else? From him? But that didn't make any sense. He was just a boy. What could he possibly do?
I furrowed my eyebrows and forced myself to look away and almost ran right into an eager-looking boy with blond, spiky hair who was grinning down at me.
"Oh
 hi," I said, wondering why this boy was standing so near me.
"I'm Mike Newton. Are you new here?" he asked, sticking his hand in the limited space between our bodies as if for a handshake.
"Yes," I said tersely, and just barely managed to avoid rolling my eyes. Of course I was new here. There were maybe four hundred students here across all four grades. Everyone probably already knew each other and, if they weren't personal acquaintances they had to at least know of each other. "I'm Bella."
As reluctant as I was to make a place for myself here, I couldn't bring myself to be outright mean to anyone. I sighed and looked down at my schedule. English with Mr. Mason in building three. At least I wasn't starting out with a terrible class.
"Can I help you find your first class?" Mike offered.
I stared at him for half a second, tempted to refuse – something in his eagerness made me uneasy and even if I wasn't after making friends here, I had a feeling I wouldn't want to encourage him. I did not, however, feel much like wandering, lost, in search of building three. It wasn't a large school – nothing here was large except for the expansive forest and water on either edge of town – and I could read a map as well as the average person, but it seemed overall easier to accept this one small offer of assistance.
"Sure," I said, making myself smile at him, a quick upward turn of my lips before I handed him my schedule. "Thanks."
"No problem!" My new companion said cheerfully, taking the paper from me. "Okay, so building three is over this way!"
Frowning, I tried to listen to him as he rambled endlessly, but I couldn't concentrate, frustrated as I was with myself. How was it that I had managed to get myself stuck with a guy who was basically an over-eager puppy dog leading me through the gloom of drizzle and soaking grass. Something told me I wasn't going to find it very easy to avoid him as he turned his head to beam at me, still speaking, telling me about his own schedule. We had Government, Biology II, and Gym together, apparently.
"I could swing by after American History," Mike offered as he opened the door to a building with a large numeric three painted in the corner. "Walk you to Government so you don't get lost."
"Oh, that's okay. I think I can find it. You don't need to go to the trouble," I said, but his smile never faltered as he stopped in front of a classroom. Looking past him, I saw that the room number matched what was on my schedule, and the walls were plastered with literary quotes. It eased my worries, the familiarity of it all. Even here in small town, middle of rainy nowhere, an English class was still an English class.
"No worries!" Mike said, already backing away. I realized he was probably going to be late to his own class if he didn't hurry, else he likely would have stuck around. "I'll meet you outside."
Before I could speak again, tell him I really didn't think it was necessary, he turned and moved through the light trickle of students who hadn't yet made it to class. I huffed out a breath and walked into class just as the second bell rang. Every single eye turned to me, then, all twelve – could classes here really be that small? – students, and the teacher.
"You must be Isabella," said the teacher, a tall, thin man with a rapidly receding hairline. The nameplate on his desk identified him as Mr. Mason.
"Bella," I said softly, but nodded. He handed me a class syllabus, and smiled at me, trying to make me feel comfortable, probably, but I could see the curiosity in his gaze. Here I was Chief Swan's mysterious daughter, not just any new student. Although, I couldn't imagine Forks High regularly saw many new students.
When he ushered me to an empty desk in the back of the class without making me introduce myself, I felt the knot of anxiety, heavy in the pit of my stomach, loosen exponentially. Safe for an hour.
I studied the syllabus as Mr. Mason called the class's attention to him and started to recap the last lesson: Bronte, Shakespeare, Faulkner, Chaucer
 I had already read some of the titles listed and didn't see anything I wasn't already familiar with, at least on a basic level. The knot loosened a bit more. Maybe
 just maybe it wouldn't be so bad.
When the bell rang and everyone began gathering their books, I took my time, flattening my slightly rumpled class schedule and comparing it to the small, blurry school map I hadn't had much time to study. Mike said he would meet me outside, but I didn't want to rely on anyone overmuch. I walked slowly to the door, trailing behind the last couple of students.
"You're Isabella, right? Chief Swan's daughter?"
Looking up, I saw yet another helpful face, and almost grimaced. Two boys trying to help the poor distressed damsel in one hour? Maybe everyone here was just that friendly, I thought doubtfully.
"Bella," I corrected.
"Bella," he repeated, almost obediently. "I'm Eric. Eric Yorkie. Can I help you find your next class?"
"Um
" He looked nice enough – glasses, skin problems, hair nearly as dark as the girl with the spiky hair and graceful gait I had seen earlier. His limbs were long, too long for his body, as if he were still growing in quick, sporadic bursts, and he had a cheerful, helpful smile. He looked nothing like Mike Newton who was almost Nordic with his blond hair, blue eyes, and boyish features, but something in his smile reminded me of my first tour guide. "I don't want to put you out, but you could point me in the right direction, I guess."
He took my schedule from my hands, the paper slipping through my fingers quickly as he drank in the words. Maybe it was just my imagination, but he looked almost disappointed when he said that he was headed toward building four, but would be happy to show me the way to building six.
"Hey, Bella!"
Turning, I saw Mike rushing toward us. I tried to keep my face neutral when I saw the annoyed, almost dismayed look on Eric's face when he saw Mike, but dread coursed through me.
"Hi," I said when he caught up.
"What's up, Mike?" Eric sounded almost dejected and I wondered if he thought Mike might have some sort of moronic claim on me now.
"Hey, man," Mike said in a way that made me think that, while they may not be particularly close, these two boys were friends. He turned to me quickly, flashing that smile that only made me want to run away. "What's up, Bella? I thought we were walking to Government together."
"Oh, yeah, well
 Eric was just pointing the way," I said, internally cringing at the awkward moment.
"We have English together," Eric said, almost boasting, immediately cheered by my less than enthusiastic reception of Mike.
"Building four is the other way," Mike reminded Eric, who glared at him.
Oh yeah, these two were definitely some type of friends
 perhaps friendly rivals
 if Mike knew Eric's schedule well enough to be able to helpfully point out that he, Mike, could help me out much more conveniently.
I was at a loss for what to say as they continued to stare at each other. So, instead of saying anything, I just turned in the direction Eric had started to lead me, and walked away.
"Bye, Bella!" Eric called. "I'll see you at lunch!"
Frowning, my back to him, I nodded. I heard Mike rushing to catch up to me, and found myself tuning him out as he started talking the moment he fell into step with me.
"Anyway, Eric's nice and all, but he's kind of weird, if you know what I mean," Mike was saying as he led me into our Government class.
I had never been so eager to meet my teacher. I all but ran from Mike's side and up to the sturdy desk in the front of the room to collect my syllabus from Mr. Jefferson. Once again, I wasn't forced to introduce myself to the class, though Mr. Jefferson did loudly suggest I get someone's notes so that I would be caught up for the test on Thursday. Immediately, Mike waved at me.
Once again, the only open desk was in the back of the classroom, several seats away from Mike Newton. With a sigh of relief, I angled my body away from him and began to doodle on my syllabus. When the bell rang at the end of the period, I was shocked – I had hardly noticed the passage of time, but my mindless art had shifted from mere doodles to a shockingly detailed, breathtakingly handsome face. I was no artist, really, not like Renee who made a living teaching, critiquing and occasionally creating art, but there was no mistaking the strong jaw, the messy hair, the intense gaze staring up at me.
Flustered, I hid the page away and shoved it to the bottom of my bookbag as I hurried to the door. How had I managed to draw him in such detail? I hadn't spoken to him, hadn't even seen him up close, but I knew, somehow, that down to the slight cleft of the chin, I had gotten every detail of the beautiful, bronze-haired boy I had seen for the briefest moment this morning.
This time, when Mike led me the short distance from building four to building five for my Trigonometry class, I was grateful for his incessant talking. It allowed me to ponder how, exactly, I had drawn him so clearly, and why. Mike left me at the door to the classroom, looking slightly put out. Apparently, he had noticed that I wasn't paying attention to him. Feeling guilty, I smiled and thanked him for showing me the way. He perked up immediately and brushed off my thanks with a promise to see me at lunch.
"I'm headed back to building one, so I won't be able to walk you to Spanish," he said apologetically. "But it's in building seven, right on the other side of the Government building."
"Thanks, Mike," I said again, waving as I headed into my class. "See you."
Mr. Varner, the Trigonometry teacher, was not as kind as the rest of my teachers. He made me wait next to his desk until everyone arrived, then had me introduce myself to the class. Only once I had stammered my name did he show me to an empty desk, again in the back of the room.
I slid shakily into the chair and rested my overheated face in my shaky palms.
"Hey
 Bella?" I lifted my face to see the girl next to me smiling at me not unkindly. She had wildly curly brown hair and the most obviously fake spray tan I had ever seen. Her teeth were straight, and bright white. "Don't worry. Varner's sadistic. He made us all go around the room and introduce ourselves on the first day. As if we don't already know each other."
I smiled tentatively. She looked like she wanted to say something else, but Mr. Varner called on her to solve a problem on the board. She frowned, and then gave me a look that clearly said, See? Sadist, and walked confidently to the front of the class.
The knot in the pit of my stomach had tightened and about doubled in size, it felt, and had me trembling all over, but when my friendly neighbor smiled at me as she headed back to her seat, I took a deep breath and forced myself to calm down. It was just high school. No big deal.
She turned to me as soon as the bell rang. "I'm Jessica Stanley," she said as we both shoved our books in our bags. "What's your next class?"
"Spanish," I said without consulting my schedule. I had it memorized by now. "Building seven with Mrs. Goff."
"Hey, me too. We can walk together," Jessica offered.
This, at least, wasn't as uncomfortable as walking next to Mike or Eric. At least it was less likely that Jessica might try to make a pass at me. She talked incessantly as we walked, and so quickly that I almost didn't catch everything she said.
"Mike was talking about you nonstop in American History earlier," Jessica said so nonchalantly that it was clearly anything but an off-the-cuff remark. "I swear Lee wanted to strangle him."
Jessica liked Mike. It was obvious in the way she forced a nervous chuckle and rolled her eyes, then watched carefully for my reaction. Hopeful, like she wanted me to reassure her that I didn't have any interest in Mike. Wary, like she was worried I would start raving about the boy she wanted.
I just frowned and shook my head. "Boys."
"Boys," she agreed, rolling her eyes.
Spanish was uneventful. Mrs. Goff didn't make me introduce myself, just handed me a class syllabus like all my other teachers, and assured me that she would answer any questions I had. I sat, once again in the back of the room, and wiled away the hour doodling. This time, when the hour was up, my doodles were nothing but messy lines outlining the page.
"You should sit with me at lunch," Jessica offered. "I can introduce you to all my friends."
It could have been just my imagination, but when she said 'introduce you' it almost sounded like 'show you off.' Still, I accepted her offer and followed her to the cafeteria, where we stood in line to get our food.
As we walked through the crowded cafeteria with our trays, I noticed them again: the five strikingly attractive people I had seen through the window while I'd been getting my schedule. We were going to walk right past their table. Though I couldn't help but feel somewhat giddy at the idea of being so near him, I tried not to look at any of them; I'd been caught watching them once already, I didn't need it to happen again. Even trying my hardest to stare straight ahead I saw, unmistakably, how he stiffened when we walked past. The boy with the bronze hair sat ramrod straight in his seat, his hands clenched into fists on the table in front of him. When he turned his head, ever so slowly, to glare at me with intense unadulterated hatred, all four of his companions looked at me as well. His eyes were pitch black and surrounded by dark circles, his lips set in a hard scowl.
I froze in my tracks, terror coursing through every inch of my body, before a sudden wave of determination washed over me. I had to get the hell away from them, from him. I was still terrified, but I rushed to catch up with Jessica, who hadn't noticed me pause, and was still talking about the Girls' Choice dance later in the year, and how she thought she might ask Mike to go with her.
When we stopped at a nearly full table near the middle of the room, Jessica smiled brightly and gestured for me to sit next to her.
"Hey, guys! This is Bella!" she announced, excitement dripping in her voice. It was clear she thought it was some sort of accomplishment that she was the one to bring me to the table. She ran through introductions so quickly that I wouldn't have been able to keep up even if I hadn't just had the life scared out of me.
Several minutes later, when the table was full of female chatter, I worked up the courage to look over my shoulder. He was still glaring at me. None of his friends were looking at me, but the big one had an arm slung over the younger one's shoulder in a way that would have looked casually affectionate if not for the way he was watching me. I had the distinct impression that the big one was putting in great effort to hold his friend in place.
I looked away and concentrated on playing with my food rather than eating it. Suddenly, I wasn't hungry. A while later, when I guessed the bell was about to ring to signal the end of lunch, I turned to Jessica in what I hoped was a casual manner.
"Who are they?" I asked, pointing over my shoulder without looking.
"Who?" Jessica asked, looking over my shoulder, but it was clear from the tone of her voice that she had already guessed whom I was talking about. She smiled wryly and leaned in close to me, lowering her voice to a hushed whisper. "Oh, those are the Cullens."
"The Cullens?" I asked.
"Yeah, they're Dr. Cullen's adopted kids," she said. "They're all related. I mean, sort of. The two blonds? They're twins, Jasper and Rosalie Hale. I think the doctor and his wife only adopted them a few years ago, not long before they moved here. The brunettes are Emmett and Alice Cullen. They're brother and sister. Technically, they're Dr. Cullen's niece and nephew, but his brother and sister and their spouses died like five or six years ago, I think? And he legally adopted them, so they're his kids, too."
"Oh." I frowned. That was only four. There were definitely five of them. I didn't want to ask, though, and show too much interest.
"Yeah," she shrugged. "They're kind of weird, honestly. Like, perfectly polite and all, I guess, but weird."
"Weird how?" I asked. I wanted to ask if coal-black eyes and unprovoked murderous glares were the norm for that group, but she had said they were always polite and the way he had looked at me was anything but.
"They keep to themselves a lot," she explained. "I don't think any of them have any friends except for each other. And they're all together."
She gave me a significant look, like I was supposed to think something of that. When I didn't react, she went on. "Rosalie's with Emmett, the big burly guy. And Alice – the little one? – is with Jasper, who always looks at least a little bit in pain. It's weird, right? That they all live together, and they're all dating?"
"I mean, if they're not actually related, I don't see why it's anyone's business," I said with a shrug, but I couldn't help but wonder why she hadn't said anything about the fifth one – the boy with so much hate in his eyes.
"Huh, I wonder where Edward went," she whispered then, and I watched her face as she scanned her gaze across the cafeteria. "He's Emmett and Alice's cousin, another one of Dr. Cullen's nephew-sons. He's totally gorgeous, but for some reason, he won't date anyone. Not even Lauren, and she tried really hard to get him to notice her when they first transferred here."
She lowered her voice and leaned in even closer so that she was all but breathing the words in my ear, obviously not wanting her friend, Lauren to overhear. I glanced around the table, trying to remember which one was Lauren. My gaze fell on the blond girl across the table talking to one of the boys a table over, a flirtatious smile on her pretty face.
"Hey, Bella!" someone said happily and I heard a quick scrape as someone pulled a chair out to sit in the empty seat on Jessica's other side.
"Hey, Mike!" Jessica exclaimed, leaning away from me and towards him. I looked up and nodded at him, happy to let Jessica attempt to distract him.
When I was sure neither Jessica nor Mike was looking at me, I risked one last glance over my shoulder. Sure enough, there were only four now, sitting at the table. The one who had looked like he hated me – Edward – was no longer there. The little one, Alice, turned her head suddenly to stare at me, and her sharp gaze went blank and unfocused again. Her boyfriend leaned close to her and wrapped an arm around her as he continued to look around the room as if nothing was out of the norm. Suddenly, her eyes came into focus again, and she beamed at me before turning to speak to her table quickly. Then, she got up and all but danced out of the room. After a brief pause in which all three of them looked slightly stunned, Jasper followed her.
When the lunch bell rang a few seconds later, I followed Mike to Biology, where Mr. Banner pointed me to the only empty table in the room. Mike came to sit next to me. A little annoyed, I turned to him with one raised eyebrow.
"Do you sit here?" I asked. Mike wasn't so bad, really, if you had someone to share his attention. It just seemed like being one-on-one with him might begin to wear on me.
"Nah, I sit over there by Tyler," Mike said, gesturing toward an empty seat a few tables away, next to a tall, lean, good-looking boy with short brown hair. "But maybe Cullen will switch with me."
My heart stopped. "Who?"
"Edward Cullen. This is his spot. He's the only one smart enough to do all the labs on his own, so Mr. Banner has always let him sit alone." Mike looked around the room as if expecting Edward Cullen to suddenly appear. "I wonder where he is. He was in American History this morning."
"Maybe he's just running late," I said weakly.
Maybe he's avoiding me, said a small, scared, sad voice in my head.
"Maybe," Mike allowed. But when the second bell rang and Mr. Banner told Mike to go back to his own seat, Edward Cullen still hadn't arrived. I was relieved – I didn't particularly want to spend an entire hour mere inches from a boy who seemed to hate me on sight.
Gym last period was horrible. It was Mike's last class of the day as well, so he walked me there, talking excitedly about getting to play basketball today. Apparently, Monday was basketball day at Forks High.
"You can be on my team," Mike reassured me, sensing my trepidation.
"Trust me, you don't want that," I told him, but he wouldn't take no for an answer. Fifteen minutes later, I had been delegated to the sidelines after accidentally hitting three people – one of them Mike – in the head with the basketball.
"Wow, Bella," Mike said, still rubbing the back of his head as we walked towards the parking lot after Gym. "No offense, but you really can't play basketball."
"I really can't do anything involving coordination or physicality," I said weakly, hitching my bag higher on my shoulder and twirling the adjustable strap between my fingers absently as I scanned the parking lot for Renee's car. "And I did warn you that you didn't want me on your team."
"Hey, it's no big deal. And don't worry, I'll still be on your team," Mike said as he stood next to me under the awning. "Do you need a ride home? I usually ride with Lee, but I'm sure he'd be happy to make an extra stop."
I shook my head immediately. Aside from finding it odd and a bit rude to offer to have his friend drive me home without consulting him, I also didn't want to give Mike any reason to think I might like him. Honestly, I didn't really dislike him; he seemed like he might not be the worst friend to have. He was certainly kind enough to take the literal hit of having me for a teammate. I just didn't see myself liking him the way that I thought he might want me to like him.
"My mom will be here soon," I said.
"Okay!" Mike said brightly. "But, hey. If you get tired of having your mom drive you around, you know where to find me."
"Thanks, Mike," I said, stepping up to the curb when I saw Renee pull into the lot. "I'll see you tomorrow."
I thought I heard him respond, but I had already pulled the hood of my jacket up against the slight drizzle and all I could really make out was the taptaptap of water against the slick material.

Bakugou wanted to be the ïżŒnumber one hero, and he had the quirk to be it. He knew he had the ability to achieve his dream, which cursed him with a egotistic personality, that made anyone who met him dislike of him. He would actively voice how he thought he was better then everybody he met until he met you.
You and him had a lot in common, you shared the same dream, had the same determination, and ïżŒyou both were overconfident because of your quirks.
You had a quirk that made you the most powerful healer in the entire ïżŒcountry, you had the abilitys to heal broken bones, mend all wounds, buff people’s quirks, and bring people back from the dead if they only been dead for one minute but you had yet to perfect itïżŒ, you also had powers that only effected you.
With your quirk it made you the definition of the perfect human, body wise, as you were stronger, faster, and more durable along with having a regenerative healing factor that made any damage you took heal almost instantly.ïżŒ
People always questioned why you were in the hero course instead of support which always made you ïżŒïżŒrespondïżŒ that you wanted to redefine what it took to be the number one hero and wouldn’t let anyone tell you different.
You were a late edition to class 1-A so you had to be introduced to the class which all of your classmates were nice to you and was happy to have you, it got to a part where one of your classmates asked you what your quirk was and you told them, they all seemed impressed, all except Bakugou.
“What kind of quirk is that?” He asked. You could tell that he wasn’t asking in a curious way but in a more judgmental wayïżŒïżŒ.
“The kind that’ll save your life one day.” You responded not bothering to look at him.
“You should be in the nurses office with recovery girl not here with someone who has real power.” He said smugly, you glanced over to him and little explosions dancing through his fingertips. He thought he was big and powerful just because he has a flashy quirk.
Your new fellow classmates looked to you to see what you would doïżŒïżŒïżŒ. You stood taller and smirked walked over to his desk.
“Real power doesn’t come from how much you can hurt or destroy something. It comes from how much good you can do with it, as I can heal the wounds of the most hopeless while all you can do is destroy. But for what I say is not up to you or me it’s up the people we save
 or hurt.” You finished your monologue.
The class stared at you in stunned silence as Bakugou got beet red which made him glare daggers at you. Your classmates were amazed that he didn’t have anything to say as you smiled a sickly sweetïżŒïżŒïżŒ smile at him, but in the back of your mind you help but to think he looked kinda cute when he blushed
Aizawa returned quickly after that and told everyone to take their seat which you all did but as you were passing by Bakugou to take your seat you leaned down next to him and whispered something.
“I’m going to be the number one hero, so you might as well acceptïżŒïżŒ it now.” You could hear him gritting his teeth as you walked away.ïżŒ
From then it startedïżŒ a rivalry between the two of you as you both competed against each other over almost everything. From who was faster, to who was smarter, to little pettyïżŒïżŒ things like who can get done their food faster. But as your rivalry continued you both found yourself caring for each other, even if the care you usual gave was more passive aggressive then anything.
But it came the day that USJ attack happened, where you were all split up from each other, well split up in teams as you looked to Bakugou as he shot a explosion into a enemy face. You saw a other enemy rushing towards him which caused you to try and reach out with your hand to touch him.
“Bakugou, let me buff you!” You shouted to him but he just glared at you and blasted his self farther away from you.
“I don’t need your help, unremarkable!” You huffed angrily, at the unflattering nickname he gave you after first meeting you.
He only did it to get under your skin but it still angered you to hear it especially since you were just trying to make the probability you both surviving more likely.ïżŒïżŒïżŒ
You gave up trying to help him and decided to focus on yourself instead as a guy with a fire quirk came at you. You dodged out of the way but was still burned as he sweeped his arm towards you.
Your quirk instantly healed up your wound. You glared at the guy as he smirked in response.
“You shouldn’t play with fire, little hero.” He said laughing. You balled your fists up and charged him. He begin to shoot fire at you but this did not deter you as you slammed into him, knocking him to the ground. The guy hit his head on the way down so he was out cold.
You stood up as your healing factor healed away all the burns and scars. You were about to be proud of your achievement until you felt hands pushing you.
“Look out!” You heard Bakugou shouted as you fell to ground, you looked up just in time to see a big hulking figureïżŒ lift him up and stab him. Your widen in shock from what you just saw, Bakugou risked his life to save you, but all you can do is just stare as the villain drop him on the ground and turned his attention to you.
He slowly started marching towards you, but you were frozen in uncertainty. This was the first time in your life that you didn’t think you could handle what was put before you. You wanted to run and go get help but you couldn’t bring yourself to do so as you would have to leave Bakugou behind and refuse to do so, not after what he did for you.
You got up and as you did the ïżŒïżŒïżŒvillain begin to run at you. Your mind raced for a idea until you saw there was shrapnel on the ground from Bakugou fighting just a moment ago. A idea popped into your head as the bad guy started to approach, you looked to Bakugou and saw that he was bleeding out so you would have to hurry.
When the villain was close enough you took a running start and launched yourself at him, wrapping your legs around his neck, then proceeded toïżŒ spinning behind him ïżŒïżŒïżŒïżŒïżŒand grabbing some the shrapnel off the ground before stabbing pressure points in his back that you remembered learning not to long ago.
You stabbed the last place as the villain pulled your legs from around his neck. He fell paralyzedïżŒ instantly which made reactivelyïżŒ jump off of him and land on your feet. You didn’t bother checking if the guy was out or not as you rushed over to Bakugou.
When you got to him you could see a pile of blood sitting underneath him, and that he was not conscious. He was unreasonably pale as you checked his pulse to find that there none.ïżŒïżŒïżŒ
Your eyes swelled with tears because you failed to save him. You sobbed and hugged his lifeless body, not knowing what to do next. How could you go back to the class and tell them that country’sïżŒïżŒ most powerful healer failed to save their classmate, how could you live your life knowing that you never told him how even though you both were rivalsïżŒ ïżŒïżŒïżŒthat you considered him a good friend.ïżŒ
You cried into his shoulder not wanting to be bothered by the world when you felt something shift under you. You opened your tear filled eyes andïżŒ saw confused red eyes staring back at your own.
“Your alive!” You said as more tears flowed down your face.
“Of course I’m alive, and why ar-“ you cut him off by tightly hugging him, like you were afraid you were going to lose him again.
“Don’t ever do that again.” You sobbed squeezing him tighter. You could feel him freeze before eventually ïżŒwrapping his arms around you.
ïżŒïżŒYou two stayed like that for awhile with him comforting you, you never thought he could be so caring but you didn’t care as long as he was here alive with you.
“I was so afraid that you were gone and that I wouldn’t be able to tell you that I really love and appreciate you, Bakugou.“ You said as your tears finally stopped. He didn’t respond which made you worry that you had just messed up. You glanced at him and tried to turn your head away but lightly cupped your cheek so you couldn’t and kissed you.
You instinctively kissed back as he held onto you and passionatelyïżŒ kiss you. It felt as if a weight had been lifted off of the two of you as all the pent up tension was finally let go after all this time.ïżŒïżŒïżŒïżŒ
Bakugou broke off the kiss and looked deeply in your eyes as he wiped away so dirt off you face.
â€œïżŒI’m not saying that this is the only why I treated you this way but I’ve kinda always liked you ever since we first met, and didn’t know how to tell you.” You could tell that it was hard for him to say that but it made you smile. He saw this and instantly got red faced in anger and embarrassment.
“Hey cut that out before I changed my mind about telling you that.” You just smiled more and kissed his once again.
“Thank you Bakugou, For saving me and feeling the same way as I do.” You said meaningfully. A small grin itched it’s way on to his face.ïżŒ
“Did you really think I would let one of the only people I can stand with die, let alone the person I love.” You smiled once more and hugged him again, greatful to have him here with you.
You both eventually ïżŒgot up and found your classmates, fought some villains, and was saved by All Might, but as most of your classmates walked out of that incident feeling fearful or joyful, you were just ïżŒhappy to have your rival and new found boyfriend back.ïżŒ

Prompt #24: Unctuous
Aeryn hovered at the edge of the Haillenarte’s party as much as she dared. She and her colleagues had been introduced to half the nobles of Ishgard by Lord Edmont, and she had socialized and had even danced with her hosts. Thank the gods Lord Francel had cut in on the last one, before that Dzemael fellow who looked like he wanted to use the time to ask questions.
She had managed to lose herself in the crowd since, but now the musicians were spinning up a new dance, and as much as she wanted to simply listen and enjoy the music, that would not last the moment someone caught her standing alone and silent.
A light breeze tickled her ear, and she glanced behind her, to see that one of the servants had opened the tall window-like doors leading to a balcony. Without much more thought, she slipped out into the chill night air, thankful the soft, green gown she wore was made as much for warmth as style.
She leaned on the balcony railing, closing her eyes as the wind played with the loose ends of her overly-styled hair. The conversations and laughter became a background murmur, though the strings and piano of the musicians came through quietly but clear, at last.
“Ah, the honored guest of House Fortemps. Enjoying yourself this evening?” An unfamiliar voice asked.
Aeryn stiffened and opened her eyes, looking to her left. An elezen man in the formal white and blue robes of the Heavens Ward strolled across the balcony towards her. He had tan skin and tan hair, a scar across his right cheek, and he smiled at her with pale-painted lips, but his eyes--
She wanted to fight, or run, or both. Even without the Blessing, this man was obviously a threat of some kind.
Aeryn supposed he ought to, if he was part of the Archibishop’s personal guard. She fought down the nervous bile rising in her throat, smiling and offering him a curtsy. “It’s been lovely,” she said. She had to get back inside.
The man offered an exaggerated bow. “Ser Charibert de Leusignac, at your service.”
“Aeryn Striker,” she offered in return, then cursed herself; of course he knew who she was.
“So I hear,” he replied, looking her up and down, as any soldier would a potential opponent. “Enjoying your first noble party? Must be quite different from what you’re used to.”
On the surface, his tone was smooth, almost pandering, but there was an undercurrent she didn’t like. “I’ve been to plenty of such affairs in Ul’dah and Gridania,” she replied, trying to keep her own tone even and cool. “The main difference, really, is the weather.”
He laughed, a bit too loudly, somewhat hollow. “Ah, but your first here in Ishgard, of course! Especially considering your background.”
She felt herself stiffen. “I’m sorry?”
He smirked. “I used to be part of the Inquisition, you know, before garnering the attention of His Holiness. You gave a few of my old colleagues quite the adventure, some time back. Cleared the Haillenarte boy’s name, and uncovered a heretic in our very ranks. Impressive work, milady.”
Aeryn realized she had straightened into an almost defensive stance as he spoke, and tried to make herself relax. She had nothing to say to him--those words were all technically true, so she simply nodded.
Gods, she could almost use Alphinaud right now; while he could be obnoxious about it, he was so much better at this sort of thing than herself.
Her silence seemed to work in her favor, however; Charibert’s smile almost faltered when he realized he wasn’t getting a verbal response. “In light of such a magnificent performance, I simply had to learn more of our unexpected savior. I’d be a poor guardian for the Archbishop if I did not, especially when I heard you would be staying in our fair city, a guest of your friends in Fortemps.”
She did not like the way he said their name.
“Imagine my surprise when I learned you are, in fact, a native of Coerthas! Come home after all these years, raised from simple peasant girl to hero of the realm! Well--that part, I suppose, is up for debate in some corners.”
Aeryn let out a deep breath. He paused, still offering that affected smile. “I was very young when I left Coerthas,” she said, tone clipped. “I remember little of that time; not even which House, if any, my village had any fealty to.”
“Of course, of course,” Charibert replied, waving a dismissive hand. “And I say it not to disparage, mind; I myself, come from humble stock.”
She raised a brow.
“‘Tis true! I was an orphan of the Brume, once upon a time, until my magical talents were discovered and my place in the Supreme Sacred Tribunal of Halonic Inquisitory Doctrine secured.”
“...Congratulations,” Aeryn offered. She was rewarded with a briefly perplexed look from the man. “I should rejoin my friends, now that I’ve had some air.”
As she turned to go, he reached out and snagged her hand. “Of course; pray don’t let me keep you, though I have enjoyed the conversation, Warrior of Light,” he said, sweeping low again to not quite brush his lips across the back of her hand, in what seemed to her a mocking emulation of courtly manner.
She snatched her hand away, holding it close, as if burned. She could feel her face heat--gods, why did she have to blush so damned easily?---And stammered a farewell as she turned and hurried back into the Haillenarte’s ballroom.
Aeryn could feel those pale eyes on her back as she tried to wend her way through the crowd and break that line of sight. Not for the first time, she wondered if coming to Ishgard had really been the best idea--but then, where else could they go?
“Ah, Aeryn, there you ar--Is everything all right?” Haurchefant asked as she finally found where he was keeping an eye on young Lord Emmanellain.
She was still holding her hand close to her chest; it needed a wash, to get the oily feel of Charibert’s skin off, to perhaps stop the sensation of burning; she almost felt as if she were back in the Bowl of Embers, for some odd reason.
“Are we to a point where we can be excused yet?” She asked, speaking quickly.
Haurchefant chuckled, relaxing with no immediate threat in his own sight. “I believe so, particularly if we use my dear little brother’s indiscretion to our advantage.”
The young man in question only made a confused noise, already far more inebriated than he ought to be by this point in the evening.
Aeryn nodded, and assisted Haurchefant in quietly escorting Emmanellain out of the party and back to their own manor.
She did not feel those eyes off of her until the Fortemps guard closed the door behind them.
