"but when i am in heaven i will remember your mouth, and when you roast down in hell i think you will remember mine" is such a beautiful line but it's made even better by the fact that it's said by a vengeful ghost named after an eminem song haunting the brain of a lobotomized lesbian nun

I haven't read these books at all, but your art is so fun and cute that I like seeing your comics a lot regardless. Fantastic Silly Little Guy energy.
Thank you for enjoying my silly little guys and my comics B*)
#ask#non mdzs#Do I tag sockpuppet wangxian? maybe not.#Truly; Thank you. The ability to draw silly little guys is one that has brought me a lot of joy!#I started this project as a way to get into the habit of drawing so I could learn.#Knowing that my comics are enjoyable even for those who 'don't go here' really is a high complement for me.#This ask is also doubly funny because I also have not read these books. I have only enjoyed them as a show/audio drama.#There was also an artist who did a recap of another book by the authour who had not seen the series and boy it was good.#that was @tempo-takoyaki if you're curious!#Long and short of it all: I think art and comics are a really wonderful media to engage with. Everyone should draw comics#Question asker has a comic too: Lovespells has really cute art and it's on my to read list now B*)

Can I be honest here,
I find highly ironic that people will harass new fans just because "ew you don't know all the 400 books and 200+ short stories, you're new and ignorant, ew", then will proceed to correct them and
*drum roll*
They are wrong or hold incomplete knowledge themselves.
#where is that graph showing 'how much you know ' and 'how secure ypu are about your knowledge '#literally a good chunk of the fans here#someone should inform these people that books are meant to be read and that listening to podcasts is not the perfect way to get all the info#especially if you follow those big guys who literally read the wiki#ironically enough those who are really human libraries of the lore are actually chill and understanding

i dont do a lot of book recs on here (i think ive done one before?) but the Henry Rios books by Michael Nava are so criminally underrated!
They're these mystery novels from the 1980s-1990s about a gay, Latino lawyer (Henry Rios, our protagonist/narrator) solving mysteries--usually while trying to prove his client's innocence. He's a long-suffering idealist written as this kind of hard-boiled detective.
This is actually something the whole series tackles, subverts, and deconstructs in a really interesting way! Instead of being this stoic detective, the archetype gets broken down in a lot of really fascinating and human ways earnestly discussing love, grief, intergenerational trauma, racism, homophobia, illness/disability, toxic masculinity, and substance abuse.
What I love is that these books realize that the hard-boiled detective is stuck in a point of hurt and trauma, and so the Henry Rios series makes a big deal out of fighting tooth and nail to GET BETTER--whatever it takes to improve yourself and your surroundings. While the books maintain a lot of the dark and morose vibe of the original genre (especially given the looming, perpetual grief of AIDS-era queer lit), they always come back to a death match against apathy. It's really moving stuff, especially as the books take this approach to Henry's recovery from alcoholism.
if you're interested in queer history, the books are in touch with queer legal/political history during the HIV/AIDS crisis. The first few books have been rewritten/published as well since Michael Nava's retirement, so I think a comparative reading could be really interesting. For the record, Nava was a civil rights lawyer, so this is all done REALLY well (not to mention the legal drama is engaging, theatrical, petty, gutting, and sometimes hilarious).
if you're interested in detective fiction, they're brilliant deconstructions of the genre. instead of taking the depressed alcoholic white guy with repressed desire for male companionship at face value, the series considers a gay Latino man struggling with machismo, racism and homophobia, intersectional identity, and processing/recovering from grief, childhood trauma, alcoholism, and Catholicism.
Stylistically, the books are smart, poetic, introspective, dark, and witty. There's a lot of suffering, but there are also a lot of intense moments of joy and catharsis that feel really earned.
Also, if you read the rewrites. uh. there's a lot of smut! Happy retirement, Mr. Nava!
#henry rios#michael nava#these books are so earnestly philosophical about morality and law that i feel a bit bad lumping them in with other serials#but regardless as a guy who did actual academic research on the dave brandstetter books read these instead#the conversation with addiction is so heartfelt and meaningful#on a more personal note henry is sort of everything to me#his type is inaccessible white twinks he feels the need to fix. and then he has a whole character arc where he GETS OVER THAT#hes a billie holiday fan. hes a baseball guy. hes great with kids. hes butch. hes a switch if you ask nicely. hes still a little catholic#hes memorized so much poetry. hes theatrical and petty as hell in the courtroom. i feel terrible for him. i need him biblically.#also#shout out thom rivera for doing a really nice job with the audiobooks! they kind of made the whole thing for me#book recs#seamus rambles#god if i end up doing my masters thesis on these i think someone should just take me out. i need to stop being on brand

the training montage in crossroads re-ignited a headcanon i had of geralt waking up and doing gymnastics, performing kickflips and mid-air spins around on a fencepost outside an hour before sunrise to ‘limber up,’ and bleary-eyed dandelion wrapping himself up in a blanket to be like "heyyy... what the hell are you doing 💖"
#if you're wondering what kind of moves he's doing he's standing on a fencepost and doing your typical flexibility stretches#but alternating between reps of stretches with kickflips from one post to the other#like ciri training in kaer morhen#i'm not going to lie witchers are cool but fandom ruined them a bit for me and now crossroads has given me that childlike wonder back#because fandom heard 'physical ability and stamina' and did you know what with it#but the agility and precision of witchers remain so underrated. as part of the deconstruction of the superhuman trope#geralt doesnt really show off as much in the books and does cool stuff only when needed but#like when (mentioned) he hit the rat in the darkness with his thrown fork... as a party trick#and killing renfri's men in the market at blaviken... and killing the scoia'tael on thanedd#and RUNNING ALONG THE BRIDGE on the battle of the bridge#and the nilfgaardians were amazed and they WERE AMAZED AS THEY DIED!!!!!!!!#and killing rience's mercenaries who didn't know who they were fighting so they were like hey what the fuck... what the fuck#i'm literally back to witcher 101 basics here. nothing interesting to contribute but like a little boy i am just smiling and saying#'dude geralt of rivia is soooo cool he can like fight a bunch of guys with his sword'#half of me wants to seek deeper themes and half of me is just like YOOO GERALT SO COOL !!#listen... there is a time to plant a time to reap#a time to analyze and a time to geek#i should probably just watch a bunch of ballet or best of gymnastics comps and i'll find what i'm looking for#also sorry CROSSROADS OF RAVENS SPOILERS artamon dying was a hilarious moment i know it was like oooh this will have consequences#but it was nice to have the evil antagonist get merked in the sme chapter as he's fucking introduced#and not even by mature experienced geralt but by some literal eighteen year-old who he tried pulling a fast one on#1) i was happy that sapkowski didn't drag it out terribly. this was humorous and refreshing after in season of storms#2) geralt almost riding off but having a feeling to go back... listen i know it's so cliche and it's giving lady of the lake chapter 4#where he eavesdrops in the caves under castle zubarran and just happens to hear stefan skellen reveal that vilgefortz was in castle stygga#but it also was satisfying to me because after reading the hussite trilogy#where reynevan (stupid and young man; like geralt here) DOES NOT LEARN after several. SEVERAL lessons#i was honestly worried for a second that we were going to get a reynevan moment. but no. because this is geralt and not reynevan#and seeing geralt develop critical thinking skills in real time was not only satisfying but a bit funny#and yes nostalgiabaiting me#like omggggg yesss his detective skills yesss that's so geralt of him

A Scarlet Pimpernel conundrum that lives rent free in my brain:
According to Sally Dugan, Orczy continued to write Pimpernel books mostly because her publishers kept asking for them and they were paying her bills (I call it Conan Doyle syndrome)
Dugan says that Orczy couldn't keep using Marguerite as the protagonist because convention demanded that she stay at home as a good little wife (boo!)
In her search for other potential POV characters, Orczy usually used one of the innocents that Percy is going to rescue, but matching them all in frequency is, unusually, recurring villain Chauvelin
(Quick aside to mention that the members of the League are usually out as POV characters because they know too much, note that when they are given the POV, they tend to be chafing against Percy refusing to share the details of his current plan with them. Percy is almost entirely out as a POV character because he's a trickster type hero and having access to his thoughts would kill the tension. That's also the reason why having the villain as a main POV character works; the question is never IF Percy will win, but HOW, so we must know all the difficulties in his way but not how he intends to overcome them.)
Once Chauvelin becomes a POV character he is immediately written much more sympathetically, from his very first scene in Elusive where he is shown to be vulnerable (threatened by Robespierre), cool (doesn't care about the threat) and admirable (his motivation is contrasted positively with Robespierre's). From this book onward, he has stopped taking snuff (trauma lol), stopped cackling evilly, and the hand-rubbing has gone from a diabolical gesture to a sign of his excessive nerves. He is shown to be increasingly traumatized by Percy's almost superhuman luck and skill, he is constantly exhausted and almost hysterical with nerve-strain, and he is continually contrasted as a true believer in the cause against his power-hungry, selfish, stupid colleagues. In Elusive especially he is heavily paralleling Marguerite. What I'm asking is, did Orczy miss her female protagonist so much she started writing Chauvelin the same way???
#The Scarlet Pimpernel#Baroness Orczy#On the one hand I should not be attempting to write meta having read only some of the books in the series#On the other hand if I have to sit on these questions alone much longer I will explode#Unfortunately Sally Dugan does not have all the answers though her book is very worth reading#Armand Chauvelin#Don't get me wrong he's still an evil little rat man - just a more sympathetic evil little rat man#Btw feel free to chime in I really want to know what thoughts you guys have

2024 reads / storygraph
The West Passage
medieval fantasy set in a giant crumbling palace of traditions with forgotten origin, ruled by giant eldritch Ladies
when winter weather comes in the middle of summer, and a beast below the palace begins to rise, two teens from Grey who have suddenly gained a lot of responsibilities set out on separate journeys to the other towers to find a way to stop it, and meet all sorts of strange people and creatures along the way
world where pronouns/names are based on people’s roles
tons of cool medieval-style chapter illustrations by the author
#the west passage#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#ooooh this is really interesting!!!#it’s like. you take those weird medieval illustrations and add some eldritch horrors and some alice-in-wonderland weirdness#and turn it into a strange fable-like adventure#it took me a little to get into it - I wasn’t sure about the writing style or characters initially- but it grew on me!#There’s very little detail about the world in the beginning but once I got a bit more into it and was like oh there’s just#weird and quirky little guys scattered all over this.#I was having trouble envisioning things and looked up the author half way through to find his art for it!#(I listened to the audiobook so was unaware there are also illustrations in the book) - that definitely refined my understanding of the vib#I didn’t actually have a look at all the chapter illustrations in the book til after and oh my god - obsessed#There’s so many of them and they’re perfect. I also enjoy the chapter titles.#And I think it’s one of those books that (for me) could teeter on the edge of like or dislike depending on surface level elements#and it went in the right direction 👍#there’s a tiny bit of romance (or: a relationship that has a romantic element) but not very much. and it is queer#also the worldbuilding kinda reminded me of keys to the kingdom (vaguely)#but like if the House was less populated and ur just following a random denizen who knows nothing travelling around. i should reread kttk#I know it means Ladies like Saints. but also every time my mind reads it as *sleasey man voice* ladiesss#oh also moment of appreciation for kuri huang cover art too

They'll turn me in your arms, lady, into an esk and adder, But hold me fast, and fear me not, I am your husband dear. They'll turn me to a bear sae grim, and then a lion bold, But hold me fast, and fear me not, I am your own true love.
The Perilous Gard (1974) by Elizabeth Marie Pope
#the perilous gard#ballad of tam lin#made an edit for my favorite tam lin retelling!#i was obsessed with this book as a kid <3#fun fact this also is one of the books that cc plagarized back in the day lmao#not that that really matters what matters is ive made a little image and now you all have to look at it <3#but speaking of plagiarism#credit to the artists who made these illustrations are given in the alt text#the ink drawings are illustrations from my childhood copy of the book#anyway if you guys enjoy tam lin and somehow haven't read this yet you should check it out!

The Hobbit or Bilbo Baggins's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad, Not At All Fun Steppe Vacation
#this one has layers#reading the hobbit is truly an experience if you've only watched the movies when they first came out#It really feels like Tolkien is making fun of Bilbo's worst vacation ever (I'm only at half of it I haven't been hit with the feelings yet#give me time)#when Gandalf just fucking leaves after the Eagles and Tolkien writes#'The dwarves groaned and looked most distressed and Bilbo wept'#I fucking lost it. Died of laughter in the middle of the night in my room.#Bilbo truly is Mental Breakdown Georg#I would have cried to. Jesus. Somebody give him ten pipe-weeds cigarettes and a gin tonic.#He should have been at club (=at home reading his books with a cup of tea)#rip Tolkien you would have loved posts about torturing your characters (I do not know enough about Tolkien to support this claim)#I love this book so much Bilbo is admittedly a pretty average guy man grown adult and then he has to survive goblins and fly on#giant eagles back and if the guy that had repeatedly saved my ass from death told me 'Well gotta go now. Too-da-loo!' I would have cried as#well. Bilbo may be a character of a fantasy novel but he does not know that. Trying to see things from his perspective for a moment instead#of the external perspective of Tolkien playing the witty narrator truly is devastating.#I love Bilbo Baggins so much. I love the Hobbit so much.#Leaving home always comes at a cost. Rotting inside your house also comes at a cost.#You're going to be uncomfortable and unhappy and desperate and regretting your decision at some point whichever option you choose.#I have history with travels and running away from places. It's a restleness. I also hate being uncomfortable which doesn't pair up well#with feeling an itch whenever you're at home too long. I get you Bilbo Baggins.#bilbo baggins#the hobbit#the hobbit book

One really annoying argument ppl keep bringing up when someone complains about lore in Veilguard not making sense considering the other games is "Lol that game (da:o, most often) came out 15 years ago, it's fine if they want to change stuff!" but like... girlies, I don't think it's Origin's fault that Veilguard took 10 years to make and decided not to use what was already established.
#and once again like. I Do Not see retcons as inherently bad. You just have to ask what they are in service of#I actually did like the retcons about the Qun and trans people in Inquisition#but the '3 elves per clan' rule also from DA:I was an insanely crafted argument to demonize the Dalish (even more)#so when people say stuff like 'it's kinda weird that the Crows are treated as heroes now when we knew them as slavers'#I don't think you... get to simply say 'lol it's fine to change stuff!' because it's an immersion breaking and confusing change#moreover it really flattens them as a faction#we could have seen how the new members dealt with that aspect of the organization and reckoned with what it means that they are in it at al#instead of realizing this is the criticism's goal you're... telling us to headcanon it away#or read between the lines in a book that should not be Literally Required Reading to keep up with a game that cost 70 dollars?#you guys are not serious people. to put it mildly#Games#DA:TV

personal rant
#it's not that i don't want my best friend to be happy but i just think that she needs to forget about this guy#she met him on some dating app they went on three dates and from the things she's told me since then it sounds like he's trying#to let her down gently and she's just really not getting it#and i'm over here also trying to not hurt her feelings and call her dumb for chasing this guy that doesn't sound like he's that interested#anymore based off of the things that she's said he's said#anyway.... im also a little annoyed that for YEARS i've talked about kpop and some nerdy fantasy series and stuff and she doesnt care at al#but then she starts talking to this guy and is immediately adopting his interests such as the same nerdy fantasy series#and also any time i have ever told her 'you should read/watch this bc i think youll like it' she wont go near it#and me telling her she would like it and should read/watch it actually makes her want to do it less#BUT now she's like listening to an audiobook of that series and just admitted to me that the reason she bought and read#and then of course really enjoyed this other book is because he mentioned it before#like seriously....#i don't know it annoys me because i feel like any time she gets into a guy she starts adopting his interests#she did this with one of her exes and that's when she got super into video games#i don't know#because she was also telling me what she liked about this book that she just read (which i've also read) and I'm like actually that kinda#sounds like she would probably like this other series too but i know if i recommend it she probably won't read it because i told her to

personally I think that as long as we are doing this historical boat media we should have some stuff about the Athenian navy in the Peloponnesian War. this post doesn't have any particular point I just think it's an interesting period
#this book I'm reading about it translates all the Greek - like - titles and roles into English ones#'petty officers' is one that is particularly throwing me off. like yes I suppose that is the best English designation for these guys#but it reads as so. specific. like ok what is their NATO rank number?#actually this post does have a point it's that I wanted to make a post about the Paralus but I haven't finished reading about her#I'll let you know when I have. you'll hear about it#really this should be on the other blog with all the classics stuff. I foresaw this sort of thing when I decided to make a sideblog

Idk what it is that makes me fixate so hard on one specific thing for years at a time, but I need it to chill out 😭 DnDads has been my only long-term media interest for like 1 and 1/2 years now, and it’s BORING to only like one thing ever lol I’m BORED!!! I need other things to be interested in, but I struggle with getting into new stuff (other than video games) sooo bad :(
That said, if you have DnD podcast recs that have interesting characters……… GIMME 👀 Also where the early episodes aren’t a nightmare to listen to 🙏 I have never listened to any other DnD podcasts, and I think it’s mostly bc the earlier seasons are always poor audio quality or like 3 hours long 😭 I’m also good with any type of narrative podcast. I just want compelling characters and platonic/familial dynamics pls. Stuff I can write sad shit about!! But also not TOO sad the whole time… maybe a little bit silly idk
So far, ones I’ve written down to listen to are Cast Party and Friends at the Table? I don’t know anything about either of them, though so? Also I keep seeing my mutuals posting Oxventure and Woe.Begone (although the latter isn’t a DnD podcast.. I think?) sooooo let me know your thoughts. And recommendations! Send me your propaganda! Tell me about your blorbos
#the only podcasts I’ve really listened to are dndads and tma#but not the new tma one or whatever it’s called#I don’t really remember anything about it and was never into the fandom anyway#it was interesting ig but just not for me#I listened to it on 2x speed 😭#I’ve also listened to a bit of wtnv and it was fun#but I also just wasn’t super invested. I like the concept a lot though hehe#anyway pls give me podcast recs. you guys can probably assume my favorite types of characters/relationships#I’m easy to read lol#tv show and book series recs are also appreciated#but idk I feel like there are probably a lot of podcasts and audio dramas I’m missing out on#and I drive 45 mins - 1 hour pretty often so it’s nice to have something I can listen to instead of sitting down with#also my last super long-term media interest was fucking danganronpa 😭#which I exclusively fixated on and talked about ad nauseum for like 4 years so. so yeah#chalcy stuff#tma#danganronpa#<- remembered I should probably tag things that aren’t what I usually post lol sorry#hopefully the other stuff doesn’t need tags
