the problem with reading comics (superboy (1994)) is that every time i see a post referencing a plot from the comics (superboy (1994)) but it's clear from the post they have not actually read the comic in question (superboy (1994)) or at the least, if they did, they missed some of the biggest and most significant themes in that comic (superboy (1994)), it leaves me sitting here and grumbling to myself because of the very loud voice in my head going "well that actually contradicts the comics (superboy (1994))", but i know that that is not actually a productive thing to say and that i should simply block the post/person and move on. even though i would love for more people to read comics (superboy (1994)). especially before they reference things about those comics (superboy (1994)). that would be cool

I feel like a lot of people miss the larger discussion the show is having about superheroes in relationships, specifically with regular people, and reduce things to a ship war of who is better for Mark and who he should end up with, for whatever reasons you don't like Amber or Eve.

But if you've noticed, especially with episode 3, regular people being in relationships with superheroes generally don't go too well, in this world Kirkman has created. Olga with Red Rush, the man at the support group who was with Green Ghost, even Debbie & Nolan to an extent. Those relationships, and the problems they talk about, are foreshadowing, a preview of what's most likely next for Mark & Amber.

There is an equal possibility that they could work through these issues and have good long relationship (like Superman & Lois), they don't have to end badly. But they will end, sooner or later, and that's where Eve eventually comes in. Kirkman puts Mark & Eve (Superman & Wonder Woman for the comparison) together for a reason. There's a specific thematic purpose behind them, particularly pertaining to the question of "What would you have after 500 years?" As the story goes on and the years pass, this theme becomes clearer. It's just at the moment, the time scope of the show feels very now and present but if they intend to adapt the entire story, it will encompass a very long time. And then, well, it's not too hard to put it together.

Dick. For the canon isn't real square I am Specifically talking about the Tom Taylor Nightwing run. Usually I ignore bad runs but given this one is ongoing (though about to end THANK GOD and get replaced by Dan Watters who i have high hopes for since i adored his Sword of Azrael (2022) run but i digress) so I counted it. Especially since it's so debated if that run is bad or not, for some reason. I'm a 90s Nightwing truther. I love Dick so dearly and tbh recently I've been more enamored with him the more I read his Discowing era, I didn't used to be as big of a Dick stan as I am these days.

Bruce. Honestly where do you even start with Bruce. I want to fist fight him and also patch him up. He got me into comics and superheroes as a whole but I roll my eyes whenever he shows up in a story. He's a bastard and usually not a good father but also complex and should be dissected under a magnifying glass. I love him dearly. He's also just the worst. I think that's why I love him. I'm always a fan of unabashedly Complicated Asshole Bruce who's generally not always the best person, particularly not to the Batfamily and that being the driving force of his relationships with them, especially in shipping.

And for bonus points, Tim. Because know above all else, I'm a Tim Drake kinnie /deg. He's been my number one for a decade and I've yet to uproot him from my brain. He's literally the Worst half the time and I love him for it. And the canon isn't real refers to Tim Drake: Robin because... that sure was a comic. And that's about all I can say about it. Pre-Flashpoint Tim I miss you so dearly. I think it's fun that I want to put him in a blender and drink the juice but also want Nothing Ever to happen to him.

I just got out of deadpool 3, and that movie was everything that the non-mcu, non-Spider-Man movies deserved as a memoriam. And I mean Everything, from Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart's masterful performances as Magneto and Professor X to the dregs of "I'm the fucking Juggernaut, bitch".

That movie was so good I almost forgot how bad X3 was until it reminded me. That movie was so good I got excited to be reminded of Elektra (2005)

Pulptober 2023: From Pulp to Super

Sorry, but. Guys. Today's theme is just too good NOT to talk about the Batman/Green Hornet crossover two-parter.

Context: In the second half of the 1960s, there were two superhero shows on air: Batman, which everyone remembers fondly for the genuinely good quality and camp aesthetics, and The Green Hornet, which was much more down-to-earth, and only run for a season. It's pretty good, too, though personally, I maintain that the Green Hornet should be stuck in time in the 1930s. But that show was set in the same universe as Batman, so, might as well. Reality isn't really working in that universe anyway.

The Green Hornet appeared twice in Batman. One was a short cameo while Batman and Robin were climbing up a building, the other a two-parter crossover, in which Britt Reid and Kato go to Gotham while chasing a criminal who is building his entire empire on selling fake stamps to collectors.

Some of the highlights include:

Stamp collection as an extreme sport

A pretty young lady they need to help whose entire personality is the color pink

A message spelled with the letters in a bowl of alphabet soup

Britt agonizing about having to go up against Batman despite them being ideologically on the same side, meanwhile Kato is just like "Meh, I can beat up anyone, it's not a problem"

Britt and Bruce pretty directly telling each other that they think his costume is stupid, whereas their own costume is the best and coolest thing out there without either of them knowing whom they are talking to

The four heroes almost getting turned into stamps

Kato staying in the hotel while Britt is doing all the investigating. Which, Kato getting sidelined is an eternal problem with the Green Hornet stories, but in this particular case, it reads more like him taking a look at Gotham and going "Yeah, nope, not dealing with this city. Have fun with your stamp collection, Mr. Reid. I'll just stay here in this nice hotel."

It was just a very fun two-parter. It is my favorite Batman episode, obviously.

The relation with today's theme is that the Green Hornet started out as a pulp hero in the 1930s, but by the time we got to the 1960s, he was still there, pretty much unaltered, only that everyone was treating him as a superhero. Idk, personally, I like to use the broadest possible definition for a superhero, so as soon as masks and secret identities are involves, I will call it a superhero. So yeah, the Green Hornet can be read as both.

I gotta be honest. Compared to the many many other teen superheroes we're familiar with...the Miracuclass doesn't really...add up.

Like can you even imagine comparing Ladybug and Chat to the likes of like, Spiderman, or the X men kids, or any of the Robins, or like the Young Justice kids or the Teen Titans??? Any of the many many super hero kids?

Like I'm sorry but if I had to put bets on who would win, it would not be Ladybug and the Miracuclass.

For anyone keeping track (no one), I have started watching the first Avengers film (MCU not the 60s TV show) but only while eating lunch so it's gonna take a while. So far Nick Fury has been assembling the Avengers (the film was initially released in the UK as Avengers Assemble - because of that 60s TV show - but it's not called that on D+ so I'm calling it what the Americans called it, just FYI) even though there's not yet anything for them to avenge as That Suit Guy (j/k I know his name too!!) isn't dead yet, and now they're on THE FUCKING VALIANT FROM DR WHO and I assume we're gonna continue assembling for a while as they're not all there yet.

MEANWHILE Loki (who is neither an alligator nor a woman in this???) is in a SECRET UNDERGROUND LAIR with a bunch of his stans who are... idk something technobabble that involves irridium and anti-protons. He is there looking for the tesseract on behalf of ???? who I know will be revealed 47 films from now as... no, wait, it wasn't, was it? That was just announced on a website or something? So it could be LITERALLY ANYONE. The Avengers (in-progress) also seem to be after that thing, but I have already forgotten why everyone is wanting it, assuming it was mentioned (it probably was).

Thor hasn't shown up yet, but Arrows Hawkeye is working as a Loki Stan and there's Steve Rogers and THE HULK and The Only Woman One, whose power is that she's a Cold War assassin (??) and I think this one is the film where she gets called a cunt (!) and honestly I am not sure which of the men she's getting officially shipped with, I think Arrows Hawkeye though? Fairly sure, as the alternative is that a man and a woman like each other as people but not in a lusty way, which would never happen obviously. (Hey I may ship mostly het* pairings but I don't always like it!)

Based on the Valiant (if u don't know who she is get da hell out of here!) I am guessing that the film ends with Loki dying in Thor's arms romantically but then I remembered that I know it can't because one of Loki got kidnapped from... either the end of this film or the start of the next one or POSSIBLY just from a later film's time-travel bit (???) but like... maybe they've edited this film secretly and I was right after all? But nobody else has watched it on Disney + recently so nobody knows yet? IT COULD HAPPEN.

Not sure what to make of this film so far, a lot's been going on yet also not much has been going on, and the one I like best so far (Suit Guy) is gonna die (NOT EVEN IN THOR'S ARMS ROMANTICALLY) and god Iron Man really hasn't aged well now that we have that one tech billionaire being a twat in public all the time to remind us what such people tend to be like. WHERE IS THOR????

Do you remember each original post you make and intentionally bring them back? I don't have much to say about Magne other than there was an Attempt, but. That time when Twice and Toga got angry with Overhaul for misgendering her was already indicative of what I'm going to get at in a sec, and obviously it was especially relevant because it was a direct show of respect and support from people who very clearly cared about her (and who called her big sis already as it was!!) (×2 imo because Twice was intentionally written to be the readers' insight into the LOV, and the character with whom they were supposed sympathise with the most at/since the beginning, so it's especially important that the first one who spoke up was him), but the story's progression (especially in recent years) is what most assures me that despite a rather poor execution (definitely not the best, but also certainly not the worst) Horikoshi did mean well with her. Okay, obviously I have some body image issues. This is very clear to pretty much everyone who knows me. I have had them since I hit about 10 years old I think? That gives me 15 years of disliking the way I look, for one reason or another. I have tried a lot of things throughout that time to change my perception of myself. And currently, I feel like I am stuck in a weird place that I can't figure out how to escape.

I understand that there are studies now showing that dieting and working out don't actually work long term for most people. I know that getting into that mostly causes things like yo-yo dieting and circular weight gain/loss. I know that being fat is being shown to not actually be unhealthy in the ways it has often been shown as and perceived to be. I know that literally all the media everywhere is blasting me with idealized bodies that pretty much do not exist or only exist through extremely unsustainable/unhealthy means.

I have tried for so long to believe in and promote body neutrality or positivity for myself and other people. I constantly refuse to let myself think about what I see in the mirror or in pictures. I tell myself to get exercise for the physical and mental health benefits, not for my physical appearance. I try to view my body for what it can do and not how it looks. I tell myself to live the life I want to live now, rather than waiting to live it till I have the body I imagine living that life. Without exaggeration, I am fairly certain I think about these things every single day.

And none of it is working.

I actually feel I dislike my appearance now more than I did even a year ago. I feel like I am constantly noticing things about my body that I never did before or new changes to my body, and I am deeply uncomfortable with them. And I want to do something about it, and clearly simply changing my mentality isn't doing anything. I want to diet and exercise. But I also know it likely won't be a permanent change. I am concerned that I would give myself an eating disorder. And I'm also concerned that I would be feeding into diet/exercise culture. I am worried about hurting the people around me who are also fat. I am anxious about the fact that I am not actually that large so I don't want to talk about it with other people because I know it will make people who are larger than I am feel terrible. I don't want to make other people who are gaining weight feel bad for that. But, I hate the way I look.

This is not sustainable. At some point something will break and I think it might end up being my brain. I am worried about how that would end up. The things I do for my brain and my body shouldn't be about how it might affect other people, it should be for me. But I don't want to be bad for the things I do. I want and have wanted for so long to look like a powerbuilder/warrior/dwarf/strongman lifter/crossfit athlete/etc. I want to be big. I want to be visibly strong and powerful. And I am absolutely not. And I know I struggle with commitment and discipline and all of that, but I also know I struggle a lot with how this desire appears to other people.

Really, I think what this is all coming down to is other people's opinions. I dislike the way I look and am told that's bad. I want to change the way I look and I'm told that's bad. I do nothing and get told that's bad. I have to want these things for the right reason, in the right way, and have to talk about it right all the time. And I just can't. I don't like the way I look and I wish I looked like a brick shithouse and everyone else can fucking suck it.
