So, Our Flag Means Death, unexpected workplace romcom chock-a-block with anachronistic 18th century fun, piracy on the high seas, gay and trans and otherwise genderweird and queer characters, not to mention neurodivergent and disabled ones, is over for at least another year. You’re aching for something of a similar flavour to fill the gap — especially if, like many of us, the finale has left you disappointed and eager to watch a show with a bit more care for its queer audiences.

… more (relatively) light-hearted queer comedy!

The most obvious example I can start with is, of course, What We Do In The Shadows. While its fifth season was weak, its sixth season was in my opinion its best ever — a spin-off of the Taika Waititi-directed (and starring) mockumentary film of the same name, WWDITS is a fun-filled, ridiculous and deeply silly show starring a variety of incompetent and bumbling and blood-thirsty vampires and their various friends, enemies, and companions. It’s constantly and continuously queer, with the majority of the cast of characters being openly bisexual, and one of them being gay and having an emotive coming-out arc with his family.

WWDITS follows the adventures of Guillermo de la Cruz, fat and gay and badass and so fucking pretty, the familiar to a vampire named Nandor the Relentless, a big himbo ex-warrior plagued by insecurity and ready to enter in power struggles with anybody from a fellow warrior to a household appliance, and the rest of Nandor’s household — Laszlo Cravensworth (once an English aristocrat, still a dandy, charming, slutty, and well-spoken — and often tinkering with experiments or DIY), Nadja of Antipaxos (once an impoverished member of a Mediterranean village, dramatic, intelligent, sharp-witted, and wry — and often getting involved in various misadventures), and Colin Robinson (an “emotional vampire” who feeds by boring those about him, dull, mundane, and painfully cringe at all times in the best of ways). As a mockumentary, its tone is silly and light-hearted, but it’s not without its emotional stakes, and there’s so many references to other pop culture vampires. 

The BBC’s sitcom, Ghosts, is a great sitcom to go for if you’re in the mood for more of a neurodivergent found family vibe, with sumptuous costumes and a complex and intriguing cast who have a lot of wonderful moments with each other. The show follows Alison and Mike, who inherit a manor house and find when they start to refurbish it that it’s full to the brim with silly, ridiculous, and unrelentingly friendly — not to mention antagonistic — ghosts. Ghosts, like Our Flag Means Death claimed to be prior to its S2 finale, is a tremendously loving and kind show — it spends a lot of its time building up flawed characters and encouraging them to change and grow, giving you time as a viewer to love them.

The show is not as continuously or constantly queer as WWDITS, but it does have elements of queerness dotted around the main cast, particularly in the character of the Captain, the ghost of a WW1 soldier who was never deployed abroad, but spent his time in service yearning for the intimate company of a fellow soldier.

Want something a little weirder, a little kookier? Crave a bit more of the BDSM flavouring around Our Flag, more whips, more leather, more latex, more kink? You might like to try Bonding — this show features a woman who begins moonlighting as a dominatrix and then employs her gay BFF as her assistant. It suffers from the tendency shows like this have to sideline Pete a bit as the gay BFF, with some of his characterisation being squandered to prop up the less interesting protagonist, but it’s really funny and honestly super heartfelt. 

And if you want really weird, really kooky, and unabashedly and delightfully and wonderfully queer, there is always The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo, which is a gorgeously funny and loving gay comedy that you can watch online!

Apart from those above, you might like to try Special (a sitcom exploring the romantic and sexual misadventures of a deeply selfish and flawed character a la Stede Bonnet, this one a young gay man with cerebral palsy), Schitt’s Creek (a sitcom about a posh family falling on hard times and featuring several queer characters, particularly the bisexual David Rose, played by Dan Levy), and Grace and Frankie (a show about two ageing women who are best friends, and whose husbands leave them to start a romance with one another).

You’ve watched Our Flag Means Death and you’re craving more of the spectacular and incredibly skilled cast. 

If you want more of Nathan Foad (Lucius Spriggs) particularly, you’re in luck — last year, Foad wrote and served as executive producer on a show loosely inspired by his early life as a weird boy growing up gay in Nottinghamshire, Newark, Newark. It’s very silly, funny, full to the brim with love, and also deeply silly and willing to get in touch with the cringe side of life. It’s only three episodes, but starring the unparalleled Morgana Robinson as the harried mother of Leslie, the closeted-but-not sixteen-year-old who is trying desperately to lead the tragic gay life he’s seen on TV, it really makes the most of that limited runtime, and it’s so fucking good. Nathan Foad even has a cameo in it as a freaky and overfamiliar employee at the bowling alley. 

He has a cameo in another great show, too — Bloods is an incredible sitcom about two NHS paramedics working in an ambulance together. It’s rapid-paced, it’s messy, it’s horrible and hilarious, and it stars Jane Horrocks as Wendy across from Our Flag’s Samson Kayo (Oluwande) as Maleek. The two are chalk and cheese in the front seat of their ambulance together, and Kayo is so incredible in the lead role balancing Maleek’s own desire to appear as cool and tough whilst also being vulnerable and having his own insecurities, especially because Wendy challenges him on so many points. Wendy is great as well, the two an exercise in contrasts, but Kayo and Horrocks are spectacular among an equally spectacular cast — you get to see so many different dynamics at the depot and in other settings, amongst other NHS staff, and the show is non-stop with the punches and the punchlines. If you really enjoy how well-balanced and how fitting the soundtrack to Our Flag is, you’ll love the music and its pacing in Bloods. Foad’s cameo in this is as Wendy’s neurotic and kind of a fuck-up son, and he’s so messy.

If you want more of Joel Fry (Frenchie), he stars in the first few seasons of Plebs — this is a goofy comedy set in Ancient Rome, and it’s not dissimilar to The Inbetweeners in its tone and content. Some of the jokes are funny, sometimes. I don’t recommend it because it really gives Joel Fry his full acting chops — but he’s hot and he’s funny and he’s cute in this, and even if you’re not super passionate about the show, if you like Frenchie, you probably will like Stylax too. 

Joel Fry and Con O’Neill (Izzy Hands) also both play characters in season 2 of Ordinary Lies, which is an anthology series, so you don’t need to watch season 1. The premise of the show each season is that the narrative jumps between characters in a workplace and explores the ramifications of the small lies they tell themselves and each other. While O’Neill’s role is a more typical set of lies that concerns adultery (or not), Fry’s involves vigilanteism and attempts at superheroism, and the plot is quite fun. This show is obviously a drama, and is tragically heterosexual on many points, but for all that, has its good and intriguing elements too. 

But what about Con O’Neill doing what he’s good at — playing wet, pathetic men? Very wet, very pathetic men? In Happy Valley, O’Neill plays a gloriously wet and pathetic man named Neil Ackroyd, who enters into a relationship with the protagonist, Catherine Cawood’s, sister, Clare. Clare is an alcoholic in recovery, as is Neil, and they have a really sweet and mutually supportive relationship — Neil’s particularly gorgeous in the most recent series, where he really dotes on Catherine’s grandson, Ryan, and he and Clare play a great duo. Neil is introduced in the beginning of season 2. 

The premise of the series is that Catherine Cawood, a police officer in Yorkshire, is attempting to solve crimes while at the same time her grandson, Ryan, is curious about and desires to make contact with his father, whom he has never met. Ryan’s mother was raped by his father and died by suicide after Ryan’s birth, whereon Catherine raised him alongside her sister. Happy Valley is a cop show, and Catherine Cawood is really funny as a character. She’s a deeply conservative and cruel, reactionary woman who constantly engages in police brutality whilst trampling over people’s rights — she believes that people are born evil and bad, effectively, and while she often talks about the effects poverty have on people’s outlooks, lifestyles, and actions, she can’t quite make that connection with her beliefs. As a cop show, it’s really interesting because it’s very pro-cop and tries to be on Catherine’s side for much of her crueller actions, but at the same time is so starkly blunt about the awful shit she does that it doesn’t exactly make you put faith in cops no matter the intent. Clare Cawood, and then Neil, are naturally far more critical of Catherine’s perspective. 

But if you really loved Izzy at his best in S2, if you love Izzy full of love whilst also being precise and cold and calculated in the defence of his family, if you love him beautiful and wonderful and unabashedly queer, you’ll undoubtedly adore Val, who appears in Uncle as the transfem and gorgeous dad of Gwen. Uncle isn’t a great TV show, it’s an example of one of those shows where they give a deeply dull cishet white dude who feels insecure a show where he sort of masturbates about how much he sucks and how he’s unlovable, but really, isn’t it on the people around him to love him anyway?

But Val is great. She’s so much fun, she’s funny and sharp and full of quips, she’s flirtatious, she’s hot, and she has some tremendous gender stuff going on as well as some gorgeous costuming throughout. If you like Uncle’s humour, watch all the episodes — if you don’t, just skip everything that doesn’t have Val in it. Val is where the good stuff is.

Taika Waititi appears far more in great movies than he does TV shows, although he’s also one of the producers on Reservation Dogs, which is excellent — it’s a native-led and starring comedy series, and it rocks. Most of the time when Waititi does TV, it’s in cameos. 

Apart from the cameo he makes in the What We Do In The Shadows TV show, I mentioned in the sitcom section, Taika Waititi also appears in the Flight of the Conchords TV series, starring the band members of the band of the same name. Rhys Darby also appears in every episode as Jemaine and Bret’s fictional manager, Murray Hewitt, and Murray is such a fun, bizarre character — and with a wholly different facial hair situation than you might have imagined for him before.

Pickings are slim for a good pirate show, or indeed, any good show with nautical flavours to it — scenes at sea are high budget and hard to shoot, and as was evident with much of Our Flag Means Death’s second season at the hands of HBO Max, many studios do not want to proffer the budget for such things. 

Let’s start with the best of recommendations — a show that’s unapologetically queer, anti-imperialist, anti-establishment, and full to the absolute brim with pirates, historical and fictional. Interested in Mary Read, Anne Bonny, Calico Jack, Benjamin Hornigold, Israel Hands, or of course, the inimitable Edward ‘Blackbeard’ Teach, real historical pirates who are portrayed and played with in the course of Our Flag Means Death, and want to see a very different take on them? Enjoy lesbians constantly scheming to kill each other, torture each other, and generally make one another miserable (sexual)? Read Treasure Island, perhaps, and ever wonder what came before?

Black Sails has all of the above and more — while it is very queer and anti-establishment, I will say that it’s far more similar in tone to Game of Thrones than to OFMD. The comedy bits are hilarious in part because the stakes are so high, but Black Sails is firmly a drama, and a gritty, violent one at that. It lacks the escapism present in OFMD — there is constant and continuous sexual violence, brutal gore and brutality, racism, classism, deep misogyny and homophobia from the society around the characters. The characters on offer are varied and complex, flawed, and interesting, but your mileage may vary with how much you vibe with them. 

Making use of some of Starz’ old set pieces for Black Sails, including some of their ships, the new One Piece live-action reboot — an adaptation of the anime of the same name (itself an adaptation of the manga) — is a fast-paced, fantastical, and colourful new release. If what you loved about Our Flag was its playful relationship with real-life piracy and chronistic details, its flexibility with “reality” and its eagerness to play around with tropes and expectations, with its creation of found family through a ragtag and varied mix of individuals. What it isn’t, unfortunately, is textually or explicitly queer, let alone as unabashedly queer as Our Flag and Black Sails are respectively.

If you’d rather have queer sailors at any cost than having ones that aren’t explicitly queer, there is, of course, season 1 of The Terror. Based off of Dan Simmons’ magical horror reimagining of the real events of the lost ships in the Arctic, the HMS Terror and HMS Erebus, the first season of this anthology horror series is itself a deeply anti-imperial story following the events of two British ships that become stranded on the ice whilst attempting to discover the North-West Passage, and in so doing poison themselves and the land and people around them. Stuck in place in a cold and unfamiliar environment that does not have sufficient resources to sustain them — and in any case, an environment and resources that as invaders of, they do not know how to live in relationship with — they are hunted by an Inuit spirit, a representation of and manifestation of the imbalance they’ve caused by their mere presence. 

The Terror has a few more explicitly gay dynamics in the book than in the TV show, but the show does feature an unstable, cannibalistic bastard of a man whose favourite hobbies are identity theft, violence, and emotional manipulation — and he’s gay. Representation win! 

As you might imagine from that description, The Terror is not a cheerful, happy show — it’s deeply violence and very at home with hopelessness, but has some fascinating exploration of British imperialism, whiteness, class dynamics, queer men on ships, and chilling horror. 

And it’s not a TV show, but I would be remiss if I did not mention and recommend Taika Waititi’s favourite romance movie — Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003, dir. Peter Weir). Based off of Patrick O’Brien’s long-running Aubreyad, starting with Master and Commander, this film is about Captain Jack Aubrey and his duet partner and best friend (wink wink) Stephen Maturin, the ship’s surgeon. It’s a gorgeous film and while of course not explicit, it’s pretty fucking gay — although unlike the other pieces I’ve mentioned, as Napoleonic-era fanfiction about British navymen, it’s not nearly as critical of British imperialism as one might like, with the majority of the criticism coming from Maturin, and might leave a poor taste in the mouth compared to pieces more critical of the British imperial evil. 

… more queer period dramas and historical shows!

Let’s start with a historical drama — Gentleman Jack, starring Suranne Jones, is set in the early 1800s and is an biographical look at the life of the cryptic diarist and all around delightfully butch lesbian dirtbag, Anne Lister. Apart from the obviously intriguing concept, the show has some sumptuous costuming and set designs, and there are so many different characters and dynamics throughout. I’m always a sucker for an epistolary piece, and as it’s based off of Lister’s diaries, this show has a lot of epistle work throughout. 

If you’re a sucker for lesbians in period dramas, though, you might just like Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries — the eponymous Phryne Fisher is not the lesbian in question. She’s a flapper and private detective in 1920s Melbourne, complete with a little golden gun, and is very hetero — but her best friend, a doctor named Mac (short Elizabeth MacMillan), is gay, and she’s so much fun. Where Phryne is really high-energy and excitable, constantly jumping from idea to idea, Mac is a lot chiller and more smooth, and she’s so suave and so much fun. Miss Fisher is a fun show — alas, a cop show, but it’s a lot more light-hearted, and it does a lot of playful stuff with the period and particularly with costuming details and things like cars, weapons, and various inventions.

If you’re open to a miniseries that’s a lot dirtier and nastier than much of the above, have I got the recommendation for you: A Very English Scandal. Starring a relatively innocent and easily manipulated Ben Whishaw across from the deliciously greasy and depraved Hugh Grant, this is a dramatisation of the Thorpe Affair — a political scandal in the UK in the late 1970s — and it’s so fun and so sexy. If whilst watching Our Flag you’ve been giggling and kicking your feet whenever the more fucked up shit goes on in intimate ways, you will almost certainly delight in this one.

You might have heard of NBC’s Hannibal, which is a gay take on the dynamic between Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham, but the same creator, Bryan Fuller, also did Pushing Daisies, which is a gorgeous 2-season show that was cancelled long before it ought have been. It explores intimacy at a necessary distance, and has some wonderful queer themes throughout, and stars Lee Pace. 

The new TV adaptation of Anne Rice’s books, Interview with the Vampire, is glorious — it’s openly and unabashedly gay, it’s so full to the brim with depth, and unlike other shows I can mention, it really doesn’t try to shy away from the cruelty of abuses in intimate relationships, or try to shift the blame for abuse entirely onto the back of the victim in a last-minute attempt to foster more sympathy for the abuser. Interview goes so deep into the loneliness and isolation of being separated from society’s mores and expectations, of how that isolation leaves you at much more risk of leverage and abuse by intimate partners, of the brittleness of found family under heavy pressure, and alongside all of that, like… 

It’s a vampire show! It’s sexy! It’s full of blood and horror and misery and grief — the grief of being alive when you should be dead, and at the same time, being halfway dead when you seem to be alive. It’s funny and it’s dark and it’s just full to the brim with poetry, has some honestly gorgeous dialogue, and on top of all that, it’s well-paced, beautifully costumed, and tremendously shot and scored. Watch!

Basically Jk was on live, and the live ended but all of a sudden, he came back on live and Jimin started commenting saying “I’m awake”. Ya’ll can’t convince that this wasn’t about the media coverage Jimin got in India and China about Hybe treatment over his album. A mutual of mine lives in India told me that media coverage were comparing Seven and Jimin’s album treatment and it’s like it was making Hybe look bad. I know ya’ll don’t want us to talk about this but I’m not buying any Jikook interactions. The last time Jimin commented on JK’s live, he told him to reduce the drinking on his live and Jk told him rudely to mind his business or something like that. Jimin just said okay, “Jk can do whatever he wants because he’s a grown man”. Jk then proceeded to make an instagram live with Tae and they started flirting. I remember Jimin receiving hate for that. A lot of Trashkookers started mocking him. And that was the last time Jimin had commented on his lives. Jimin likes Jk as his brother because he said Jk reminds him of his brother but I don’t think Jimin a very mature, smart guy can settle for someone so disrespectful and childish like Jk (that’s very disrespectful of people that think so low of him). Jk is very disrespectful that the members have also talked about it. Im glad his true colors are starting to show. We all know that Jimin is a very private guy that’s why to this day no one knows where he stays, He hasn’t been in any relationship scandal and yet Jk has been caught multiple times although the company denies (you can’t convince me that Jk didn’t have anything with the tattoo artist because those pictures of him back hugging her were so intimate but anyway that’ll be a conversation for another day). Jimin is very private that’s why he always does his lives from Hybe not his home. Why would a private and respectful guy like Jimin be flaunting his “gay” lover (Jk) everywhere. To the point of flirting with him when millions of their fans are watching. They know what the audience wants. I refused to be a shipper because I’m not easily manipulated. The way Jk is doing back to back lives lately trying to create a no boundary relationship between him and his fans is also a manipulative and calculated move. Now the whole fandom sees Jk as their best friend. I see some armies also saying that “This guy loves us so much that he even lets us see him almost naked in his bedroom”. I can’t stop but feel pity for them. Jk always said that they have to ask the company before doing lives because there has to be someone supervising, but he comes on lives like “rebel” telling us that what will the company do? Hybe knows that bts might not come back as a group and we all know that allegedly, three members haven’t signed the contract. Hybe wants Jk to be their pop boy and their next money making machine, what other way to do that if the fans and the Pop boy don’t have a Bff relationship? Now you can’t say nothing about Jk and don’t get death threats from armys. I saw someone making a whole ass video on TikTok wishing death to solos that attack Jk. Hybe also knows that this whole criticism Jk is getting is mainly because of LC, and to prove the fans wrong, we have to get Jikook interactions and many more are to come. Now whenever you try to criticize Hybe and Jk armies will say that but Jikook are besties they even flirt on live. Anyways these are all my opinions and thoughts. Ya’ll can celebrate Jikook interactions as you should but I’m not gonna do that. Jimin has always been happy, he’s been taking private trips and dinners with his friends. He was even in Jeju a few weeks back and Jk was busy chilling with Woonga. It’s not Jk that makes him happy. We all don’t know how truly he’s feeling because him being private, we’ll never know. No one in their right mind would be happy with all the things that have been going around. He worked days and nights for his album and a song that was just handed to Jk just comes all in the name of breaking all his records. I know he’s not happy about the situation and other members aren’t too.

And if we go according to your damage control theory then why would jimin comment so enthusiastically? If hybe is doing something against jimin then why would jimin be an active participant in that? It doesn't make sense for jimin to comment if it's gonna harm him. You think jimin is that naive? Jimin was the one who commented and the comments didn't looked forced at all. OK, after yesterday’s episode, watching the SK8 community react, and giving myself some time to get my thoughts together, I think I’ve come to a conclusion in my head about Renga mainly, and SK8 as a whole.

I agree with the community. I think SK8 is a canonically LGBTQ+ show. There are enough scenes to blatantly show this. I know sports anime’s tend to queerbait a lot and make relationships seem more intimate with men than other shows, but still. Even by sports anime standards, SK8 does seem to take it a bit further than just “see what you want”. There are canonically queer characters we follow, and the shots/visuals of some character dynamics are intrinsically queer coded. So with that I can agree.

As for Renga . . . I can somewhat agree/disagree with the community. And while their reunion scene has gay implications, I can’t say I am 100% on board with what I see a lot of the community celebrating. The overall message of what I’ve been seeing is “It’s a confession. You don’t have to explicitly kiss or say I love you to be in love and confess. If this was a man and a woman, you would’ve eaten that up as romantic.”

Yeah, I def agree with that overall as a statement. Langa, at the very least, came out on the show. And the way he describes his heart racing with Reki, that he loved snowboarding because he loved his dad, and he loves skating cuz he loves Reki, he’s at least part of the canon queerness of SK8. But Reki, IMO, from what I’ve seen, hasn’t given me a big inclination that he’s pan/bi/gay or whatever he is. We know he likes girls because he’s expressed it in the show, but I haven’t seen any inclination for boys.

And yeah, I’m a big Renga shipper, but I don’t just want to project onto the show my wishes, or see what I want to see by doing mental gymnastics. I really want to look at it and say to myself “Is this character queer coded?” Him blushing because Langa showered him with praise isn’t the same. Lots of people, especially people with low self-esteem (as Reki had been going through) get embarrassed when thrown compliments. I do see potential for Reki to be a “gay” character, but at the moment, I feel myself flashing back on Killua and Gon from HxH.

Not to get crazy into that but Killua is a canonically gay character in HxH, and it’s heavily done in such a manner that he doesn’t even have to explicitly say it for the audience to know. Togashi did a great job with him. And while I ship Killugon, and Gon has the capacity to be a “gay” character, I was never given any blatant implication that he harbors any romantic feelings for Killua. Gon’s love for Killua is just love. I’m not even sure if Gon can experience romantic love, but that’s a whole other can of worms.

My POINT is that while it isn’t necessary for Langa and Reki to kiss or say the words “I like you” for the audience to feel if they do or not, I don’t want to KEEP settling for this narrative in gay media. In a world where it is soooo hard to find explicitly gay canon confirming stories, I think it is necessary to get more confirmation. At least until gay content is so normalized and accessible. It’s super important IMO at the beginning to start pushing for the explicit proof. No wiggle room for people to take away LGBTQ+ voices for their stories, for people to dismiss “gay” characters, to downplay our stories and say “they’re just friends, you’re just pushing shipping” to people who consume this stuff. It sucks to even have this debate anymore when a story is clearly ours.

So, while IDK if I’d say SK8 is queerbaiting, I def feel a certain kinda way with being satisfied with stories being told with implied confirmation instead of visual or verbal. I don’t want to settle for crumbs anymore or the bare minimum. It’s 2021, even a lot of children’s animated shows are finding a way to kiss and say I love you or even going so far as to say “I’m gay.” I’m not going to shit on SK8 for that, because it is a good queer coded show with some canonically LGBTQ+ characters/scenes.

But I won’t lie if I say that I just wish they would push it farther if that’s the narrative they want. There are so few anime out there for gay people with explicit confirmation that isn’t fetishized. You can probably count on both hands the amount of anime that does that (GL is different, rn I’m talking about BL). So I’m not completely with the community on this. Until there are a lot more stories for LGBTQ+ where you don’t have to question if this character/relationship is canonically gay or not, I’m not gonna be completely satisfied with saying “I want to skate with you forever” essentially.

IDK that’s just my take on it.

TL;DR: I appreciate that Renga seems at the very least semi-canon, but I’m not happy with series not taking the plunge and showing us explicit canon gay confirmation, when we live in a world where so few things in media (at least with anime) exist. It just seems like a half-celebration in my heart, at least.

What are your personal opinion about queerbaiting in anime/manga? Sorry for the random ask...It's just that most of my otps are of 2 male anime/manga characters that describes as bff/ rivals/ enemies that don't have any romantic relationships.....Even after I watched/read BL anime/manga, I still ship more of them that canonly are not a couple....Is that weird?

First of all, it's fandom! Be weird, that's practically what it's for! But I think this is pretty common actually. I know I certainly relate to it.

(I apologize in advance for how little anime I'm going to specifically mention here; Moriarty the Patriot is really my biggest foray back into the genre after a like 8-10 year break from being an otaku. I'm still catching up lol.)

I define queerbaiting (and I think this IS the definition) as a situation where the creators of a piece of fiction have realized that their media is appealing to queer people, and have decided to capitalize on that interest without any intention of actually letting a queer story happen. So, Destiel for example is 100% queerbaiting: (many of) the writers dragged that out very intentionally while also being disdainful of and seemingly grossed out by their queer audience. They just wanted to see how much money they could milk from it.

On the far opposite side is something like Our Flag Means Death, which is like a love letter to queer audiences and has queer people on the creative team and is just generally a joy.

In between, you have things like Good Omens or Hannibal, that maybe weren't setting out to be queer stories, but embraced the love from that community and allowed that element to grow within the series. The anecdotal story about Hannibal; that Bryan Fuller as a gay man was actually setting out to explore straight male friendships that he didn't feel like he could entirely access himself, only to have the chemistry between the leads shift the story, is something I really love (regardless of whether it's entirely true.) THAT is the kind of romance story-telling I want to see; something organic played out between writers and actors and audience. A living thing, rather than a set-in-stone script.

So, bringing that back to anime/manga, and using the series I'm most obsessed with, I think SherLiam is a bit of that. They've been very clearly fitting into romance tropes right from the get-go, but I also would not be surprised at all if our Senseis were responding to positive feedback from fans as they keep letting it get gayer and gayer. Though I have zero expectations of the words "I love you" or of an on-page kiss (and frankly I like what we have gotten better), nothing about it feels like a loveless manipulative money-grab. It feels like, "we like this, the fans like this, so we're gonna let it be as much a romance as it can be within the confines of the magazine it's published in."

In a more general way though, I totally agree with shipping not-quite canon couples above couples in things that are strictly romances, whether straight or gay. If you're watching a romantic movie or reading a BL manga, the ending is a foregone conclusion. You know they're gonna get together. And quite often sex is brought in very early.

Personally, I prefer a genuine will they/won't they. I like not knowing. And I like a couple to get really deeply emotionally intimate before sex factors in. So slowburns and things that never really become canon, or become canon right at the end, really work for me. There's always fanfiction if things aren't resolved the way we want, and in the meantime I can enjoy seeing a pair truly get to know each other in a way that most couples who only get an hour and a half of screentime or a few episodes just don't. I'll take 100 chapters of pining with no resolution over a couple hopping in bed after 45 minutes on screen.

Man, I get this ask a lot (not that I mind).

It's kinda hard to point to just one thing as "proof" because Cockles is a culmination of so many things. It is years and years of puzzle pieces all coming together. Just looking at one bit will not show you the whole picture-- and that's what the antis love to try and do. Every time a new piece of Cockles drops, they go "That doesn't prove anything!" like just recently, with Misha telling us that he used to stay the night at Jensen's in Vancouver. If that was the only time he had ever mentioned interacting with Jensen beyond the show ... yeah, it wouldn't prove a damn thing; but piece that together with all the other tid bits that he and Jensen have said, done, admitted to or let slip, and suddenly we're looking at a mound of evidence that implies much more than a buddy crashing on his friend's couch for a night.

But, if you're really looking for just one moment that-- to me, screams Cockles louder than anything else, I guess it would be this photo:

... this is not how two friends pose. I of course have seen girls hug chest to chest with their faces squished together as they smile for the camera, but this doesn't seem to be like that. It's not some cheesy moment that screams "BFF Forever!" It's oddly intimate. It's sweet and soft, and I can practically see the image moving once the shot had been taken-- Jensen smiling at the photo, approving it before lowering his phone, and then he turns his head, looks into Misha's eyes and kisses him again, because the kisses he got before they took the photo just weren't enough.

Even with this one image being so telling though-- it was preceded by a panel at JIB that was very, very gay, and I can't say that that isn't coloring my judgement of this moment just a bit. This photo was taken after straddle-gate and Jensen's following boner, after "You know what I haven't told you today? That I love you", and after Jared came out to break up the madness, only to have Jensen become a grumpy-gus because of the unwanted addition.

This photo looks like the two ran off to be alone the first second JIB was over-- and they found some empty loading dock where they could talk and hold one another and kiss without anyone swooping in to stop them ... and then, for some blessed reason, Jensen decided to share a little bit of the intimacy with us.

It is the most Cocklesy moment ever, but really-- it's only so much so because of all the other Cockles moments that came before it.

I just hope that there will be even more like it, and that the guys will continue to get more and more comfortable with sharing their love with us.

I believe Jensen and Misha are okay and are together. Social media likes and comments don't mean anything. I mean it's not like Jensen or Misha used to comment on each other's posts before. Jensen didn't even wish Dee Happy Mother's Day this year, does that mean they are not together anymore? Nope. He has other best friends he has known for over 20 years like Jason Manns, Steve Carlson etc that he doesn't wish happy birthday, does that mean they are not friends anymore.

Please let's not put value on social media likes. I don't even follow my own family on sm and I don't always like or comment on my bf's or bff's posts on sm. So it doesn't mean anything.

As for the Gish Panel, I have talked about it before, the time Jensen was slotted to attend the panel, he was meant to answer fan questions. I honestly believe they decided to not do it at that time because they knew the questions would be about Destiel and not their new projects. If you watched that panel, Misha knew that Jensen's album was out as I pointed out. He was just trying to promote the album and soldier boy. He knew Jensen had also buffed out. It was all to promote Jensen. Anything else you hear is trolls and antis just being loud. Also don't forget Jensen called him "babe".

I think this will probably the last time I talk about this, because it's like an endless loop but here it goes.

The reason why it's weird to me, is because of two things: it's a very heteronormative debate & because of Jungkook's relationship with the other members of BTS.

I hang out way too much with gay men, gay people in general (once, my mom actually told me "you will never get a boyfriend with friends like that"; maybe she was right, can't find a heterosexual man when I don't hang out with them often), and at least here where I'm from, gay men acting like Jimin or JK act with BTS members wouldn't be weird at all, even if they're a couple. It's completely normal for gay men even those in relationships, to be like that with their friends here. I've been with gay men who offered blow jobs to both straight and gay men at parties. They're just unhinged. From what I know, European gays are even worse. Knowing Korean dating culture tho, and how possessiveness and jealousy is kind of a big deal and is expected of a partner, I thought gay men there probably live by those dating rules of their culture, and not the ones from the western gays, you know? Eventually, in late 2019, seeing how Jimin and JK act, and trying to see their actions and relationships from the perspective of them being a couple, I assumed gay Korean guys just act like gay guys all over the world and maybe the heterosexual dating "rules" in Korea don't apply in the community.

Now, the perilla leaf debate, all I've seen about it is from heterosexual couples 🤷‍♀️ it looks like a dating rule heteros would invent. I would like to know how Korean gay men in relationships feel about it. I mean, gay men that we know for sure are gay.

I've said before how I thought (and still think) that the comparisons between jikook and hetero Korean couples are useless and don't really make a point at all, because of how different gay men behave to straight people in relationships. I doubt you'll see Son Yejin or Hyuna sitting on another man's BAWLS or you'd see Hyunbin or Dawn say "X girl is mine". Maybe they would say the same about someone of their same sex, because there would be not even suspicion of intent there, since they are straight. But I'm not sure they would do or say stuff like that about the opposite sex.

If Jungkook is or ever was in a relationship with a girl, his interactions with BTS would not be questionable at all. Actually, most male idols can be in straight relationships and still do exaggerated fanservice with their bandmates because their girlfriends know that's just their bros 💪👊

And the argument that "it's their culture"; Jungkook clearly stated that he doesn't mind if his partner is pouring beer or soup for their friend because "that's our culture" he said, perilla isn't really what he, at least, considers cultural customs. It actually reminded me of Mijoo because that happened in September 2019, right.. in November 2019 they filmed winter package and this happened:

Jimin backhugged Jin and Jin said "not in lover's mode" and Jimin stepped away and just posed next to him.

So, one would argue that backhugs are their culture and it's okay for friends and blah blah blah, but even with cultural customs everybody has a different opinion on those. For Jungkook, hugging Mijoo like that was allegedly a friendly thing, as it is for him to hug BTS like that too. For Jin, it was a romantic pose. In the perilla debate, JK thinks it's romantic and Jin thinks it's not.

I also wonder if it's one of those things that if there wasn't a debate around it, would he have an opinion at all. As we've seen recently, Jungkook is very much into k-dramas and internet slang/culture. Has he really thought about it or it's just one of those things he's seen from the outside looking "intimate" and has decided, without experiencing it himself, that it wouldn't be okay?

Or maybe it's just that whatever relationship he has with Jimin is not exclusive or anything like that, so none of them have reasons to actually act exclusive or expect exclusivity from each other. His relationship with Jimin as we see it, and as we see them interact with the other members, especially Jungkook for me, does not look like the type of relationship of a guy who cares about perilla leaves.

If he was talking about people outside of BTS, I guess it's proof, or at least for me it's enough proof that the rules that apply in the outside BTS world, they don't apply with the members. But that could also be the case even for jikook's suspicious interactions: maybe those interactions are not suspicious at all in the inside context of BTS.

Coincidentally, a few days ago I saw a tweet (maybe some of you have seen it too, it was retweeted by a big jikook account) where a guy reacting to jikook videos said something like this: if they weren't in a group or if they weren't kpop idols and they were just regular people, and he was seeing them act like that in the "real world", he would be absolutely conviced that they're a couple. That's something I've said a lot in the past, too. IF the circumstances were different, it would be a no-brainer.

The line between friendship and romantic relationship in groups of lgbtq people sometimes is very thin, and if you don't know the dynamics of the group, you'd think friends are dating each other all the time. But if JK definitely draws a lines at perilla leaves, with it he's clearly making a distinction between a friend and a romantic partner, it tells me that he does make a difference between them, and then to me the most coherent thing would be that he draws a line at other bigger stuff too, but frankly, I don't see it. I used to see it for a while in 2018-2019 but it's not there anymore.

Generally speaking, the things that make them stand out right now to me is the time they spend together and that Jimin still pretends to kiss him, and sometimes the way they speak to each other. But aside from that, I don't see much difference. Even less when it comes to skinship.

(Of course, to know that they live together would make all the difference in the world, and in 2020 it did. Even if they barely interacted on camera, or interacted in ways that weren't "obvious", the living situation said a lot. But that changed too, so..)

It's already been two years of this and I've talked about it with my friends when it happened, but during MOTS ONE concert, Jimin cried and JK went to him and squeezed/massaged his neck and I thought that was sooo 🅱️oyfriend and such a caring, intimate, affectionate gesture. The whole thing. I really thought it was a big, meaningful gesture and for some reason, I personally put a lot of meaning into the way JK caressed Jimin's nape that time. Fastforward some weeks later, and JK does exactly the same to Jin here, and Jin wasn't crying or anything. And since then it has happened with Taehyung too that I remember.

And also, you'd think that Taehyung thinking like that about the perilla leaf, or what he answered on weverse today, he would be more mindful or have more "decorum" in the way he interacts with people in relationships, but he has none of that when he interacts with Jimin or with Jungkook. Even asking JK to cook for him and being all over him in the kitchen hugging him and whatnot (I'm using this example since you know, the topic is food).

So, if Jungkook is exclusive in his way of treating Jimin vs how he treats other BTS members, it's definitely not there where I can see it. I've been saying that for the longest time tho, and anyone knows that because I've always been clear about it, I didn't really need the perilla discussion to think this. It just added more context and reasons for me to think that at least when it comes to BTS, I don't see what his answer to the perilla leaf debate would indicate.

So, in conclusion; to me, the Jungkook that I see in a BTS context, what I see of his relationship with Jimin, and the way he interacts with the other members and the little I've seen of him talking with other people, I don't see a partner that would care about perilla leaves. Or at least not a partner to Jimin.

On the other hand, Jimin's position on the perilla leaf debate makes complete sense with the way he is on camera with JK and with the other members. I think I've said before that, even if Jimin feels like JK skinship with the others it's too much, he wouldn't actually try to stop him or change him, and the way he said "you've helped my friend with their leaves, now help me with mine, wouldn't that make it okay?" it fits. It's cohessive also with how, in several ocassions Jimin has asked JK to treat him as nicely as he was treating some other people. Like in Malta when Jin dropped a piece of meat and JK said it's okay, you did great. Jimin dropped meat too after that and he wanted JK to tell him it was okay too. Or when he wondered why JK was like that around minwoo but not around him. He didn't mean that JK should be a different way with minwoo, Jimin just wanted the same treatment from JK. There have been times too, recent moments, when Taehyung and JK are doing something and Jimin "gets in the middle", and whoooo suddenly it's a vminkook moment, and a couple of times from what I remember that Taehyung touched JK and Jimin inmediately touched JK, too. At first I thought it was coincidence, even if it has happened more than once, but I don't think it was a coincidence anymore. Same thing when he asked JK to do a drawing of him like he did for Hobi.

Maybe, possibly, probably the whole thing speaks to their lives and relationships outside of BTS more than within BTS. At least that's the only way it would make sense to me. I guess the only way for Jungkook's answer would be cohessive for me, it would be to see them how they are with their friends in real life; but that will never happen, so I will probably always belong to the "if they weren't idols..." group of people.

Matteo/Jonas: I think Jonas is very similar to Gio but like he is german you know.... The germans are just a little more low key about things but like we saw Jonas step up when Matteo was telling him how David’s silence was making him feel. Jonas was like “what’s his number? Let me call homeboy I aint having this shit? You got his address? Give me that too just incase I need to pull up” hahahaha 😂😂😂 but like I said Matteo was so head over heels but Jonas just saw matteo as his bff and nothing more but he has mad love for matteo that's his boy.

Gio/Marti: Here is the weird thing when I tell you no one loves their Isak more then Gio loves Marti I mean that shit. Gio loves Marti to his core. Like he would throw hands for marti, he’d like have Marti’s back even if marti was in the wrong. If marti needed a friend to wingman him at the gay club. Gio would be there no questions asked. But its not a romantic thing I just think Gio is just a loyal mother fucker and what every Jonas should aim to be for their Isak. My man is loyal to the soil. It’s pretty admirable.

The Good, The Bad, and the Dirty: Spop season 5

I’ve stopped screaming, and I took the time to rewatch season 5 with my little brother. So, here are my thoughts:

The Good

Horde Prime - The cult™ : I really dig the aesthetics, that combo of religious fanatics + fascism hit good. The crew did a good job at portraying Horde Prime as the ultimate villain of the show. He was engaging to watch and his ideology was pretty clear. The way they played with the hive mind concept was really fun, and it was Horde Prime’s biggest strength. He was also a very good manipulator, successfully playing with Glimmer and Adora. He was unsuccessful with Catra because she had already hit her lowest point.

Entrapta: honestly, she was the most hilarious character this season. Not only was she engaging to watch and listen to, I felt really connected to her this season. The fight with Mermista hit really good and it hurt, but you could see her trying her best. I love how open she is and how accepting of everyone and everything. I’m glad we got to see so much of her this season.

Scorpia: baby, she only deserves good things in life. When she got mind control, you could see how fucking powerful she is, but luckily for us, we got to see her shine independently before that. Her interactions with Swift Wind, Perfuma, and Double Trouble made her shine. She’s smart, talented, and without an evil bone in her body. I’m happy she can move on from Catra and find love and friendship. (I hope she reconnects with Lonnie, Rogelio and Kyle in the future too)

Mermista: babe, you were always mood. She has been consistently funny, her get ups and plans are so entertaining to watch, but also: her relationship with Sea Hawk is great! They are definitely made for each other. I’m sad she was mine controlled for the other half of the season, but I’m happy we got to see a lot of her before. (Also she burned someone’s ship OMG GANGSTER SUIT)

Sea Hawk: happy to see him back. He was funny as always, and I’m happy he got his moment with Mermista at the end. 

Perfuma: “ADORA, WHAT DO YOU HAVE THERE?” “A TANK” “NO!” Her relationship with Scorpia is so good! I wish we could’ve seen more.

Netossa: I was one of those who was sad to know the 2 canon lesbians of the show were just background characters. I am so incredibly happy to see her shine this season! SHE SAID MY WIFE. She is the queen of the roasts and I stan.

Spinnerella: Dude, I didn’t know you were this powerful what the fuck. Also, your wife is super cute and she draws like Noelle.

Emotional Support Cat: Bro, I love Melog’s design. I think it was a really clever way to have Catra express her feelings and process them out loud for the audience by giving Catra a supernatural cat.

New She-ra design: I see the subtle reference to Bow, Glimmer and Catra in the design. Honestly, Adora looks 100% more badass.

Not Hordak: I really wish he had picked a name from himself. Aside from Entrapta, this might be the other hilarious character of the season. He goes through his individualization process in a healthier way than Hordak and showcases that the clones can be different from Horde Prime and rehabilitated. I wonder how he will feel about Hordak? But we got no epilogue so idk I guess.

Darla: I can’t believe they named the ship, but I love it.

The Best Friends Squad: I swear to god, when Bow, then Glimmer and then Catra interrupted Adora’s train of thought, I knew we were going to have a great dynamic. The way their characters play of each other is hilarious. Bow, who usually has the only braincell, is cautious and a total dad; Adora is the dumb jock with the heart of gold that gets herself into trouble; Glimmer is the chaotic enchantress with no patience; and finally Catra who’s got all her walls up, but gets shit done. I want a show of them together going on misions and almost dying in the process, thank you.

Catra Redemption: You wanted it, and here you have it! I was cheering for Catra this whole season while proclaiming I’d die for her (which I had only reserved for Scopia previously). Though things may be a little rushed, Catra takes her time to process things, and goes back and forth a couple of times. She deflects, lies, and runs away, but in the end she opens up and rushes back.

In general, the season was packed with content. I was never bored through any episodes and I honestly laughed outloud while watching it alone and later with my brother. There were moments when we paused the episode to discuss what had just happened or to process new information. This makes me feel even more weird about the bland season 2/3 division.

The Bad

Okay so, let me make this clear: I will never attack a ship or anyone who supports it. In this blog we multiship like adults and respect other people’s OTPs.

That being said, while this season was long and packed with content, it also felt rushed when it came to the relationships of the main cast

Glimmer - Catra: The prison episodes had barely any interactions between both of them. I wish they’ve had had more time to talk and to connect. There were Glitra moments that make me feel happy, and my brother was for a moment convinced that they could be canon. They are foils of each other after season 4. The conversation they had, where they realize they had a lot of things in common could’ve been a catalyst for both of them to grow and heal. However, Catra has her change of heart really soon and saves Glimmer, which prevents any deep interactions between them in the future. Aside from the jokes, Catra must be with Adora, and Glimmer must be with Bow, so everything else gets dropped.

Glimmer - Adora: The conflict between them after Angela’s “death” was one of the main plot points of last season. When they reunite again, their issues are solved in a couple of minutes and then brushed off. They really don’t have big interactions after that, which feels completely OOC and empty.

Glimmer - Bow: I wasn’t the only one who felt the sharp turn of their relationship. In previous seasons, it was really platonic, but as soon as they see each other again you know they are going to end up together. The camera zoomed on them, Bow was always holding her protectively, the way they looked at each other change. Since Glimmer is not allowed to have intimate moments with anyone else, it kinda dulls everything up. Don’t get me wrong, I love some best friends to lovers, but in this case it felt rushed for me. If I pinpoint the moment things turned romantic for them, it’s the first time they interact in person this season. It didn’t feel organic (contrast with a ship like Korrasami, where you can point at the moment Asami realized she had feelings for Korra, and then later when Korra’s attitude towards Asami changes after the time skip).

Adora - Catra: Honey, we all knew this was going to be end game, and I love the fact that Catra is dealing with her feelings and Adora acknowledges that. However, after the end of season 3, I’d have expected things to progress a little slower. Catra did put some resistance with the chip scene, but even afterwards, what would’ve been better paced with more episodes, was condensed in a few. Don’t get me wrong. I love that Catra redemption, but I’d have loved a better pacing.

BTW for anyone interested: I ship Glitradora, so any of the 3 ships ending up canon were good for me, and I liked Bow/Glimmer, just preferred them as bffs.

There’s a list of characters that barely show up that could’ve had more screentime:

Huntara: barely appears at all. She’s seen fighting, but there are no references to her or a storyline with her.

Lonnie, Rogelio and Kyle: briefly shown. The gay couple of the century have adopted the baby demon and are now the best dads in the desert. Lonnie is their braincell.

Double Trouble: at least they had a scene and lines, but I feel like they could’ve been more involved after they were discovered by Scopria, especially since they escaped with Sea Hawk and Perfuma.

The Star Siblings: idk man, they were part of a whole episode and then faded into the background. It was a glorified cameo for an episode where Glimmer and Bow fight.

Glimmer’s Aunt: sorry but I was asking “where the hell is she?” until she finally showed up late. She barely had any purpose.

The Dirty

Hey, guys, girls, and nonbinary pals, can we sit down and talk about redemptions?

IDK about you, but just because a show is aimed at kids you shouldn’t “redeem” all the villains. This trend bothers me specially when it touches on abuse or totalitarian leaders.

Shadow Weaver was an abuser until the end. She shouldn’t have had a heroic sacrifice, and her “I’m proud of you” line was bitter for me. I’ve said before I was raised in an abusive household and I don’t think it’s healthy to tell children that you can change your abuser or that you can expect them to change without therapy. I’m glad Shadow Weaver died, but I wish her death wasn’t in any way shape or form considered a “redemption”. A heroic act of sacrifice doesn’t erase all the pain she cause and the years of trauma Catra and Adora have had to endure.

Hordak. HEY HEY ETRAPDAK SHIPPERS DON’T COME FOR ME! I was weirded up by the ship until I realized Etrapta is in her late 20s. I’m happy they found each other but I think it’d be better if Hordak had to redeem himself through a life of service to Etheria. He can't erase the horrible things he has done, but with the help of Entrapta and others, he could give back to the community he ruined. Since we don’t have an epilogue, we just see him reuniting with Entrapta at the end and that’s it.

ALSO SOMEONE GIVE MICAH A HAIR TIE. My man, you are not in a hostile island anymore, go rock a dad bun or a dad ponytail!

Summary: Saying no leads Charlotte to a friendship she has never imagined.

A/N: I’m trying to force myself to write. Maybe this will light a fire under my ass…. Or my muse’s. She’s a bit flakey.

Chapter 3

Charlie sat on one of her plush couches with her nose in a manuscript.  She had been living and working in Massachusetts for a solid year.  Her new job kept her plenty busy, but she had managed to find a friend in another book editor named Eddie.  He loved to joke that he was the worst gay BFF ever because he wasn’t a flamboyant person and he had no fashion sense to speak of.  Charlie had joked that he was the straightest gay man she had ever met.

She had made other friends, too.  Chris had introduced her to his sisters and she and Shanna had become fast friends.  She was most responsible for getting Charlie out of the house.  Lisa visited at least once a week and they would sit and talk about Charlie’s job and the books they were interested in while drinking tea.  

Chris had recently taken a couple of jobs that filmed in and around the Boston area, so he was home a lot nowadays.  They spent their time together seeing the sites, playing tourist, and hanging out at each others’ houses.  Chris loved to tell her stories about growing up in the area.  She particularly loved the story of him waking up the morning after prom on the neighbor’s front lawn.  

Their friendship was going strong.  They had had sex only a grand total of six times so far in the last year.  Chris had been off filming in various locations around the world the first part of the year she’d lived there, so making good on their plans had been pushed aside for a few months.  The first time they’d been intimate had been extremely awkward, neither of them quite sure of what the other was ok with.  Both of them were used to being the one to take charge in the bedroom.  Eventually, she had finally relented and let him take the lead.

“Ow!  You’re on my hair.” Charlie said.

“Oh, damn!  I’m sorry.” Chris apologized, shifting his weight.  She giggled and he rolled his eyes. “I swear, I’m much better at this usually.”

“Maybe we shouldn’t have skipped the foreplay.”

“You were the one that jumped me!”

“Oh!  That is not how it AH!” He had shoved into her and the sudden invasion had startled her. “Well, that wasn’t very nice.”

“Sure felt nice.” Charlie snorted.  Chris started pumping his hips and Charlie moved hers around, trying to find her own rhythm. “Mac, stop moving so much.  You’re throwing me off.”

“You’re throwing me off!”

“I’m on top, here.  You gonna let me do my thing?”

“Why are you on top, again?”

“Did you want to be on top?” She blushed and shook her head. “I’m literally buried balls deep in you and that made you blush?”

“Would you get on with it?”

“Do you want to stop?”

“No.”

“Tell you what, you let me do my thing and if it needs some adjustments, tell me.  This will go a lot smoother.”

He had been right.  The next few times had been a little smoother.  She started to get more vocal about what she wanted and liked.  He was more than happy to oblige.  By the sixth time, just a week ago, she had gotten braver.  

Chris and Charlie sat on his couch watching a rerun of I Love Lucy.  Dodger, Chris’ dog, was dozing between the couch and the coffee table.  Charlie looked over at Chris and admired the way his biceps looked in the slightly-too-small T-shirt he wore.  He didn’t notice her stare, so she took more time to admire his smooth cheek.  The part in Boston had required him to be clean-shaven and she was admiring his strong jawline that had been hidden by his beard.

“Ok, creeper.” Chris said, turning his head to look at her. “What are you staring at?” Charlie didn’t answer.  She moved across the couch and straddled him. “Oh, hi.”

“Hi.” She leaned forward and began gently biting and sucking on his neck.  They had both agreed that kissing was too “relationship-y,” so they used their lips for other things. 

“I like the direction this is headed.” He quipped as she reached her hands under his shirt, sliding it up as her fingers raked through his chest hair.

She shook her head at the memories of last week.  Returning her attention back to her manuscript, it was only a few seconds later that her phone dinged.  She grabbed it off the end table and looked at the text from Chris.

The chat bubble from him read, “You home?”

She quickly typed out an answer. “Where else would I be?”

“Be over in a few.”

Fifteen minutes later, Chris walked in through the garage door.  She had given him a key to her house so he could water her plants when she’d had to fly back to Omaha to be there for Amanda when her first round of IVF had ended with a miscarriage. “Ho, ho, ho!”

“Who are you calling a ho?” Charlie called out from the library.

“You do know you have a bunch of other rooms in this house, right?” He joked, striding into the room.

“None of them are as exciting as this one.”

“That’s because it’s the second week of December and you don’t have a tree.”

“I told you.  I don’t have any decorations.”

“I thought you were going to buy some.”

“I haven’t yet.”

“All right,” He marched over and snatched the manuscript away.  Setting it on the desk, he blocked her from getting to it. “Get your coat, Mac.  We’re going shopping.” “Chris….”

“No friend of mine is going to be a Scrooge two years in a row.  I’m not having that.”

“I’m not a Scrooge.  I like Christmas.”

“Says the woman who doesn’t even have a tree.”

“I was going to get one.”

“When?  Christmas Eve next year?”

“No.  New Years Day three years from now.  I’m sure I’ll get a great deal.”

Chris rolled his eyes. “Look, you can come willingly or I can fireman carry you out of here, but either way, we’re going Christmas shopping.” 

She leveled a glare at him, but he wasn’t budging.  Finally, she huffed and strode past him. “You’re driving.”

Chris watched Charlie balance on the chair to put the star on the top of the tree.  They had spent the last two hours putting up her fake tree, decorating it, and arguing about whether or not she needed her front yard decorated.  He had snuck some outdoor lights into the purchase with the intent of putting them up.

“Mandy would say you need them.” Chris threw out.

“And Mandy would pay someone to put them up.” Charlie shot back.

“I’ll call Scott to help us put them up.  You can pay us in beer.”

“Who’s us?  I’m not putting them up.  This is the extent of my decorating.”

Chris rolled his eyes. “Fine, Scott and I will put them up.”

“Why are you so insistent on Christmas decorations?”

“Because I love Christmas!”

“Clearly.”

“Come on, Mac.  You used to tell me that Christmases with your aunt were special to you.”

“They were.  But she’s gone now and I live a couple thousand miles away from where I grew up.”

Chris sighed. “Why does that mean you can’t celebrate Christmas anymore?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Well, you do realize that you’re more than welcome to join the festivities with my family.  Ma has been threatening to replace me with you anyway.”

“She has not.”

“She definitely has.  We got into an argument last week and she threw that at me.”

Charlie laughed. “I highly doubt that I would live up to her eldest son.”

“Nope.  You’d surpass me.”

“Shut up.  I wouldn’t.”

He chuckled. “Seriously, Mac.  Come celebrate with me and mine.” She started to protest, but he cut her off. “I will bug the shit out of you until you say yes.  And I’ll have my sisters, mother, and brother cover the hours I can’t.”

“I swear to god, you’ve been talking with Mandy about how to force me into things.”

“Uh, yeah.”

“Wait, you have?  For real?”

“Yeah!”

“How have you been talking to her?”

Chris shrugged. “Email.”

“Email?  And how did you get her email?”

“I stole it off your computer.”

“Chris!”

“What?”

“You can’t just go through my stuff like that!”

“I didn’t.  I swear!  You went to the bathroom and you left your email to her up.  I wrote it down.”

“Why?”  

“I needed some advice.”

“On what?”

“Nunya.”

“Chris!”

“Ok!  I needed advice on what to buy you for Christmas.”

“Are you being serious right now?”

“Yeah.”

“This Christmas?”

“Yeah.”

“God!  Now I’m going to have to get you something.”

Chris placed his hand over his heart in mock shock. “You didn’t get me anything?”  

“What did you get me?”

“I’m not telling!”

“Does Mandy know?”

“Of course she does and no, she won’t tell you.  She swore.  Can we stop with the third degree now?”

“She can’t swear to you.  I’m her best friend.  Her loyalty is to me.”

“You spend too much time with your nose in fiction.”

“Says the guy who plays a hundred year old soldier hopped up on steroids.”

“Hey!”

Charlie laughed. “Don’t worry, Cap.  I’m not even a fan.”

Chris suddenly grabbed her around the waist and hauled her off the chair.  She let out a surprised yelp and he laughed as he dropped her down on the couch.  Before she could stand up, he jumped on top of her and straddled her hips. “That was mean.”

“Which part?” She teased. “When I called Cap an old druggie or when I said I’m not a fan?”

“Both.” “Gonna punish me for it?”

“Maybe.”

“Tis the season for forgiveness, though.”

“Is it?” He poked her in the side and she bucked under him.

“Chris!” He laughed and poked her on her other side.  She bucked again and growled about how much she hated being tickled.  He, of course, knew this and began poking and tickling wherever he got an opening.  She slapped at his hands and tried to push him off, but he was too strong. “Chris, stop!” To her surprise, he actually did.  

He was holding her wrists above her head with one of his hands, but he stopped tickling her with the other.  They both laid there, breathing heavily.  They were both very aware of each other’s bodies pressed together, their faces mere centimeters apart.  Suddenly he closed the gap between them and captured her lips with his.  The kiss was chaste.  No tongues were used, but it felt like an electrical current was running through them.  When he pulled back, she stared up at him in shock.  It lasted for all of a second before she grabbed the back of his head and pulled him back down to her.

Chris moaned into her lips as his jean glad hips ground into her.  She wrapped her legs around his waist, urging him on.  He released her arms and she reached for the hem of his shirt and ripped it off quickly.  He moved his lips to her neck while his fingers traced up her ribs, pushing the shirt up above her breasts.  A small sigh escaped her lips as his hands each gripped the mounds of flesh, his thumbs lightly tracing her nipples.

Charlie raked her nails down his back, forcing a low growl from Chris.  His mouth began a torturously slow trek down her body while her hands gripped his hair.  Somewhere in the room, she could swear she heard her phone ring.  Chris didn’t seem to hear it, so she concentrated on his fingers undoing her jeans.  The ringing stopped as he finished opening the zipper and she raised her hips to help him remove her jeans.  He began tracing circular patterns on one of her inner thighs while his teeth nipped at her other thigh.  

The ringing started again, but they both ignored it as he dipped one finger under her panties to trace her folds.  She let out a groan, needing more contact from him.  He chuckled and lightly bit down on her thigh.  The ringing stopped and Chris’s finger pushed into her.  He quickly added a second finger, pumping them in and out of her.  When he knew she was about to explode, Chris stopped his ministrations and pulled away.  He brought his fingers to his lips, but stopped when Charlie’s phone rang again.

She growled and sat up. “I don’t even know where it is.”

Chris wasn’t going to let her go, though.  She managed to stand up only to have him grab her by the waist and pull her back down.  He easily maneuvered her around to have her bent over the arm of the couch.  Quickly yanking down his pants and rolling on a condom, they ignored the ringing again as he shoved into her.  They both began grunting and growling obscenities as he fucked her over the arm of the couch.  Without any kind of hesitation, Chris slapped one globe of her ass to see what kind of reaction she had.  She gripped the arm of the couch tighter and let out a moan.  He did it again to her other cheek with an almost identical response.

“Fuck!” Chris groaned. “You feel so good.”

“Harder, Chris.” Charlie begged.

“Happy to oblige.” He began pistoning in and out of her, their flesh making wet slapping sounds.  Her phone began to ring again. “I’m so close.”

“Chris!” Charlie’s head whipped back, flipping her hair down her back.  He watched it spill around her shoulders as she rode out her orgasm.  Something about the way it moved made him lose control.  His thrusts stuttered as he came, pulling her against him and twitching his hips as he came down from his own high.

They collapsed down to the couch and Charlie wiped the sweat from her forehead. “Sorry.” Chris said suddenly.

“For what?” She asked, genuinely confused. “For kissing you.  I know we agreed to no kissing, but I couldn’t help myself.”

Charlie shrugged. “I’ll let it slide this time.”

“Are we sticking with that rule?”

“I mean…. Kissing is so intimate.”

“And fucking isn’t?”

“Not like kissing is.  Kissing is…. Romantic.  We’re not romantic.” Charlie’s phone started ringing again. “What?!” She got up and located her phone, answering it without even looking to see who was calling her. “This had better be…. Oh.  Hey!  Mandy, slow down.  What are you saying?” Charlie glanced at Chris watching her intently. “Oh no!  Oh, Mandy, I’m so sorry.  Of course I will!  I need to make some arrangements and I’ll call you back.  Ok.  I promise.  Love you, too.” She hung up and immediately started gathering her clothes.

“What’s wrong?”

“The last round of IVF finally worked and she was pregnant.  She went in for her second scan, but there was no heartbeat.”

“Oh fuck!”

“I need to pack and call my boss.”

“I’ll help.” Chris grabbed his pants and shirt, quickly tossing them on. “I’ll pack for you while you go call your boss.”

“Thank you!”

Chris stood off in a corner and waited for Charlie at baggage claim.  She had been back in Nebraska for the last week comforting Mandy.  He had talked to her once during that week and that conversation had been brief.  She had shot him a text yesterday asking if he would be able to pick her up from the airport.

Finally, he spotted her messy red hair up in a high ponytail.  She looked like she hadn’t slept all week.  Charlie finally saw him and she smiled a tired smile.  He opened his arms and she walked right into them.  They stood there for a long time, content to give and take comfort to each other.  Finally, Charlie released him and looked up.  She had tears starting to dry on her cheeks.

“That fun, huh?” Chris asked, wrapping his arm around her shoulders.

“We spent pretty much the entire time in her bed just crying.” Charlie said, grabbing the handle on her rolling carry-on. 

“How’s Roger?”

“He’s a mess, but he’s staying strong for her.  I found him crying in the laundry room once.”

“Man!  That’s rough.”

“I didn’t want to leave, but I had to get back to work.  Hey, thanks for coming to get me.” “No problem.  I do need to get back to set, though.”

“Right!  I completely forgot that you have a job.” She cracked a smile at him and he shook his head.

“Hey, wanna come see how a movie gets made?”

“You want to take me to a movie set?”

“Yeah!  You up for it?”

“Feed me on the way?”

“I’ll take you straight to craft services.  You’ll love it.”

A little while later, as they rode in silence away from the airport, Chris noticed that Charlie seemed like she was far away from the here and now.  He reached over and squeezed her hand, but she only gave him a tight smile and went back to staring out the window.  Finally, he couldn’t take the heaviness that had settled into the car.

“Hey.” He said gently. “You ok?”

“I, uh…. I don’t know.” Charlie glanced at him as she fiddled with her fingernails.

“Wanna talk about it?”

“Not yet.”

“Ok.  You sure you wanna come to set with me?”

“Yes.” She sighed. “I need a distraction.”

Two weeks went by before Chris couldn’t take the weirdness anymore.  Charlie had been even more in her head than she normally was.  She’d been working on reading a book for the whole two weeks when it usually took her no more than two days to read one.  Lisa had mentioned to Chris that Charlie had been quiet on their tea dates as well and she was worried about her.  He finally decided that enough was enough and he invited her and his mother over to his house for dinner one night.  He and Lisa had cooked a small meal for them and as they were sitting on the couch after dinner, he broached the subject with her.

“Mac, please talk to us.” Chris said. “You haven’t been yourself since you got back.”

Charlie took a long drink from her wine as she stared sightlessly at the TV. “I know.”

“What’s wrong, sweetie?” Lisa asked.

“Nothing’s wrong besides my best friend in the entire world can’t have kids.” Charlie sighed. “The doctor told her she should stop wasting her money because she has a hostile womb, so it’s never going to happen for her.”

“Shit.” Chris said.

“The one thing she’s wanted since she was a child is to have a family and she can’t.”

“There’s always adoption or surrogacy….” 

Chris noticed Charlie flinch slightly at that last word. “What?”

Charlie closed her eyes and pulled her legs tighter under her. “Mandy asked me to be her surrogate.”

“Whoa.”

“Yeah.”

“What did you say?” Lisa asked.

“That I needed to think about it.”

“I can see why you’ve been so distracted the last couple of weeks.” “She said that she and Roger had talked about it before the last IVF round since the first two hadn’t worked and they both agreed that they would ask me if it came to it.  They even decided to make it easier for me.  They would move here to Concord.  Mandy said she would find another job out here and Roger said he could work remotely until he finds an office.  Apparently his firm wants to open an East Coast branch and Boston has been tossed around as a potential place for the new office.  If he volunteers to move, he’s pretty sure that he could convince them to choose Boston.” 

Chris blew out a breath and said, “What, uh…. What does that mean for you?  What would you have to do?”

“They showed me these pamphlets and some articles they found on the web.  They’re in my desk in the library.”

“Have you made a decision?” Lisa asked.

“No.” Charlie got up and began to pace. “When I think of saying no to her…. It terrifies me.  I worry that it would crush her for her best friend to say no to something this huge.  I don’t think she would stop being my friend, but it would definitely affect us in some negative way that I don’t even want to fathom.”

“How does it make you feel when you think of saying yes?”

“Terrified.  When I think of saying yes, it’s scary to know, but not know what I would be going through.  You know?  I know it’s selfish to think like that, but it’s a lot.  Like, a lot.”

“I don’t think Mandy would ask you to do something she doesn’t think you could handle.”

“What’s it like…. Being pregnant?”

“Well, every experience is different.  When I was pregnant with Carly, I was sick the first trimester and then everything after was a breeze until she was born.  With Chris, I was sick the whole nine months and uncomfortable and always hungry.” Lisa stood up and stopped Charlie from pacing. “Charlie, this isn’t a decision anyone can make for you.  I wish I could take the burden from you, but I can’t.  Only you know what’s best for you.”

“Did she give you a deadline?” Chris asked.

Charlie shook her head. “She said to take as much time as I needed.”

“Well, that’s good.  That eases the pressure some.” Lisa squeezed Charlie’s hands. “I’ve got to head home.  Charlie, please don’t hesitate to call me with any questions you have.  Or even if you just need to talk to someone.”

“I will.  Thank you so much, Lisa.” Charlie hugged the older woman tightly and walked her to the front door with Chris.  After the door closed, she turned to Chris. “Can I stay here tonight?”

“Of course!” Chris said. “You want me to make up a guest room?”

Charlie shook her head. “No.  Can we just watch a movie and fall asleep on the couch?”

“Sure.  I’ll grab you a shirt and I think you left some shorts here to change into.”

“Thanks.” Charlie sighed and walked into the living room while Chris ran down the hallway.  She wanted to take the night off from thinking about THE QUESTION and falling asleep watching a dumb movie with Chris like they usually did with their nights in sounded like the perfect solution.

Why do you believe jerklie is fake? As in depth as you can please. She’s the one factor I don’t feel confident in. I believe Gaylor, that toe is bs, that Kaylor was real at some point. Where I lose faith is that Karlie and Josh aren’t together. As ridiculous as the wedding was, sometimes they look happy together. Could be they’re just really good gay bff’s.

Sorry it took me awhile to answer, but I didn't want to just write some half-assed response and I have been busy...

To be totally honest, I don't actually know know, so I'll start by saying that. But everything about their interactions scream disgenuine to me, especially prior to the engagement. The biggest thing for me is just "gut", but that's a pretty weak argument that leaves a lot of holes, so I don't expect to convince anyone based on that. Look, I'm fully aware that my answers here are fuel for the anti's, because they're just not sound arguments, and moreso just based off observations and personal inferences. So take it all with a grain of salt.

The thing with these two, is that their interactions leave me the same way that "Shawmila" does. Feeling weird and icky and sad. I'll also say that I know exactly what you mean, because while I don't think they're a real couple, it seems like they're better at playing the game now. But anyway, a few reasons immediately come to mind.

1. She didn't really seem to acknowledge him for a long portion of their relationship. I understand being private, I really do. But if your answer to a question about Grace Kelly is asking where your prince charming is, all while you're in an actual long term relationship, is that really an appropriate reaction?  I of course understand making jokes, but that would be kind of hurtful, wouldn't it? And I don't need to mention that the guy happens to be rich, which is kind of a factor in the prince charming fantasy 🙄. Or when you get extremely awkward about being asked how to land a guy when you're so busy being a supermodel, and you avoid it by passing if off to the other girls, more than likely because you cant relate to the question whatsoever (and really could just answer in general terms without getting into your own "specifics")... It's just not typical of someone in such a long term relationship, whether or not you're private about it, whether or not you've got superb PR training. Then there's a lack of being publicly involved with him other than in random pap photos (see below), and also promoting a bunch of his investments.

2. The pap pictures. iirc, there was a post where you could see that she walked to his hotel and then they started their stroll for the paps, which is super odd behavior for a real couple. Why aren't you together to begin with, it's just weird to me. They never even put in effort to seem like a real couple in their early pictures, they just existed in one space at the same time. She was trying to build her brand and create a public association, but I think it's safe to say he was trying to do the same.

He was never pictured in her family gatherings or more personal/intimate events. If he was willing to be a public figure (why do you need pap photos and an entertainment based manager if you don't want to be involved in that world?), he was willing to be linked to her, and willing to be photographed with her, I don't know why you would draw the line at privacy.

And, it's weird how they seem(ed) to post pictures that have been chosen from an over-used batch of stock images, rather than natural, non professional/casual event pictures of the two of them.

3. Then they took their previous strategies and started amping it up during, and prior to, the engagement era. The pap photos increased, suddenly they were pictured being "intimate" and kissing (ew), there were more frequent mentions, she actually started acknowledging him, it was all amped up. Yes, one could argue that by becoming more serious, they decided to make their relationship more serious and bring it into the spotlight. But they had already been together for several years, so I don't understand why that would make a difference, unless they were just super casual for years and just using the relationship for public relations ? That still stinks a bit to me.

4. Included in this increased effort was a very quick engagement, and then a half assed wedding. To me, it seems natural that if you're not rushing to get engaged, you wouldn't rush to tie the knot. You would give your damn designer more time than a rush order for 3 weeks, would you not ? And why was that such a short timeline ? Why even go through with the first one if you're planning on waiting for a bigger one later ? I mean, why?? It just doesn't add up. Clearly there was some kind of deadline happening behind scenes, even if you think they're real, something was going on there. I also personally believe that it wasn't supposed to leak out that day, and we probably would have seen a different unfolding of events had things gone differently. The latergram wedding video at least showed there was more than what we had originally seen, but I also find it strange that the photos from that day have been the same.

4. Despite this increase in effort and the "wedding", the fact still remains: there's no chemistry. I'm sorry, but there isn't. That's not a reach. It's not wishful thinking. I'm not being rude. They just don't have chemistry. Those kissing photos ? It looks awkward and uncomfortable. That tells me something is up. I know it's mostly photos, but I still don't see genuine connection. It's just not there. This is the biggest factor to why I personally don't think they're real, whatsoever. There's one photo of them in particular where it's just so glaringly obvious they have no feelings toward each other and just can't possibly be each other's type. But maybe that's presumptuous of me. I hate stereotyping and making judgments, so I won't say it, but I'm sure you can pick up what I'm laying down.

I know that doesn't answer your question, because you want to know why I still think they are fake, despite Karlie's sudden acting chops and they're commitment to the stunt.

But I have a few other things to add.

For one thing, Karlie's public persona shifted around the time of the engagement. She used to be very friendly with other models, she had lots of friends in Taylor's crowd, she posted more genuine moments of having fun, etc, and more recently, a lot of that side of her has gone dark. When she posts something about friends, it's usually another client of Scooter's, or someone with whom she has a business relationship. I believe this is because her friends didn't want to partake in the farce, and don't want to be associated with that nastiness. It's a natural progression for a model to stop walking in shows when their career amps up, but it seems like her entire approach to her career and business has shifted around the same time. I think she's focusing on being more of an influencial figure in the media, rather than a model per se. I do think these things are connected. I think she finds a level of comfort and connection to the industry by being associated with that crew.

On that note, is it possible that they're like a fake fake couple, as in legitimately pretending to everyone that they're together even though everyone knows they aren't, and they sleep in separate bedrooms and it's all just convenience and there's no sex but there's an open door policy for both parties to just do what they want in their own free time and probably have side relationships? Sure. But if that's the case, then I would think Karlie wouldn't be in her own long term relationship with Taylor.

I do think it's possible that they are actually friends. In fact, I think this is very likely, as she doesn't look like she wants to die when she's pictured with him. She seems comfortable enough traveling with him and doing these stunts, so something in her has shifted to give her the ability to switch codes so well. Of course we don't want to think that, but I think she's probably just bit the bullet and decided to make it easier on herself.

So where does that leave us ? Obviously there's a lot about this situation that we know nothing about. The guy is a crook, we can all agree on that. Sadly, in Hollywood/wealthy land, being a shady fuck doesn't have quite the same reaction that it does in the real world. Money talks, connections talk, and so does that yacht money. Why is Karlie a willing player in this game ? Has she realized that the Trump association clearly doesn't cause as many issues as we may have assumed back in 2016? Has she chosen to continue this sherade because it's done wonders for their goal of erasing Kaylor connections? Has she chosen the path of least resistance because it's been a long few years and she's too tired to fight anymore? Has she decided she doesn't have the ability to reach the desired heights of her career with just her own hard work and merit ? Is she actually just not a good person and totally fine with rolling around in corrupt money and laughing straight to the bank ? *This one hurts*, but has she lost a big part of her life and has thus decided she no longer has anything to lose, so why the fuck not ? I don't know. All these things run through my mind, and I wish we had some form of an answer, but sadly don't think we will anytime soon.

I really don't know, anon. I read through my answers here and realize I'm not actually so convinced myself, anymore. Of the four things I said yesterday I was so sure of, this one is the one I'm least sure of, though I would think if they were "real" it would be more of the platonic scenario I described above, and not an actual loving relationship. Karlie is a loose cannon. We don't have brilliant lyrics to analyze and look to for answers. We don't have a history of patterns to look at, to try and find holes in the narrative. It's just a different game here.

Now, if the entire plan all along has been to erase the Kaylor connection, to even make us Kaylors doubt, then they've done a brilliant job of that. Because it's glaringly obvious that she's losing our support and faith.

I'm sorry that I can't give you more than that.
