I was honestly really disappointed to see how disinterested I Saw The TV Glow was in acknowledging its protagonist’s Blackness in literally any way. to be frank, it really damages the movie in a way that it can’t recover from: Black femininity, Black queerness, and Black transness are not identical to their nonblack counterparts, and writing Owen in such a way that literally nothing about the plot or movie would change if he weren’t Black really hammers home how much the trans experience is not a universal, monolithic one. like, Owen doesn’t have Black friends, the only other Black character in the movie is dead before the second act ends… it’s just really disappointing. especially considering what a bleak place the movie leaves Owen at by the end.
