- Thermal clothes and wool clothes. Like, thermal undershirts meant for people who go in the snow lol. But wool is the best for thermal regulation. I bought a bunch of used wool sweaters for cheap and they saved my life. No more having 7 layers of cotton and polyester if I can have 2/3 layers of wool and whatever thermal insulator is in that weird shirt!
- Working out! The year I did strength training at least a couple times a week, I felt MUCH less cold, it was unreal. I'd be out in a t-shirt while people wore jackets. It felt like the world had just been turned upside down. It was crazy
- Glycerine cream. This is still a bad sensory experience, I hate hate hate having cream on. But just applying it before going out and before going to bed on my hands prevents them from bleeding all winter long.
- Sun exposure / vit D supplements. I'm not really sure which of these truly help, and in countries that get like no sunlight during winter or people stuck inside an office during all sunlight hours only the supplement might be an option. Last year I tried to keep my face and arms (and legs when I wasn't freezing) under full sun exposure for at least 15 mins a day whenever I was able to, bc in the past I had low vit D in my blood exams. The days I was unable to I took a supplement (not always, when I remembered to). Idk if it was the fact that I was going out taking in some sun or actually a vitamin deficiency, but my mood has been much better last year.
(if you take supplements, of course, do not abuse them. Too much vit D is toxic. There are very strong weekly supplements for people with severe deficiencies and regular daily ones. If you're unsure, do some blood work/check in with your doc!!)

"How to Salvage a Whole Foods Delivery Screwup" There's a LOT that goes into successful opossum care, so when Whole Foods delivers regular loaded with allergens & bad ju ju for me vs. Vegan Carrot Cake, well I can't just give the kiddos the mistake as is. So, I deconstruct the cake by removing the icing, blending in moringa leaf powder, calcium, and vit D (unsure about the amt of Vit K needed, but will check to be sure moringa has it, which it should), then reconstruct the cake with healthier icing to offset the excess phosphorous. Not exactly an ideal situation, but hey, there may be good nutrients in the carrots, raisins, and walnuts for the kids & although the raccoon who lives on the property would love nothing more than to have me just toss this out in the yard, that's no good for my coonie friend who will get only a little of this. Even reconstructed, this is insanely high in sugar, so they'll be getting mini desserts all week. Don't forget, raisins are toxic for dogs, so do your research before giving your best friend your leftovers. Please make sure they're safe! Yep, it's a weird, research filled life when you're responsible for the welfare of wildlife. You can't just go out & by possum chow. Too many do this for all the wrong reasons at the animal's expense. At least some places require a license to do this. Now if only the regulators were wildlife protectors vs. exploiters it would help, but while many claim to care, very few actually do. I wish I could save them all, but gotta settle on saving who I can. There are really evil people in charge, esp in 3rd world state FL. When anyone starts to care, you know where to find me to learn what it's going to take to build a better future. In the meantime, just doing the best I can with what I've got, & part of that actually is getting food delivered & fixing the mistakes to ensure there's less poison pumped into the air we breathe. With tragedy, eg covid-19, comes opportunity to build back better for those of us spared & given another chance to get things right. If you’ve ever wanted the run down on vitamin D for horses, you are in luck! Today we will be talking all about vitamin D and what it can do for your equine pal. First of all, let’s talk about what vitamin D really is and how it’s available for your horse.
Humans absorb vitamin D through sunlight and supplementation, and it’s the same for horses. Horses have two different forms of vitamin D that they can absorb, either D2 or D3. Vitamin D2 is found in plants while vitamin D3 is synthesized in the skin by exposure to sunlight. We’ll talk more about which form of vitamin D is better for your horse shortly.
But here’s the deal. Vitamin D is in fact a hormone, and your horse will always have enough vitamin D assuming there is plenty of access to sunlight. Without ample sunlight, it is recommended that you supplement vitamin D for your horse. If you don’t, your horse could experience vitamin D deficiency, which can cause bones not to calcify normally. It can even result in rickets in young horses and a metabolic disease known as osteomalacia in adults. 
Which is Better Vit D or Vit d3?
To understand which is better for your horse, vitamin D2 or vitamin D3, it’s important to understand what each of these hormones does and how they occur in nature. Firstly, D3 occurs in animals and D2 occurs in plants. Both forms of vitamins are absorbed in the small intestines of your horse, where they ultimately work to increase calcium absorption, phosphorus absorption, and magnesium absorption. This results in an increase of the releasing of calcium from the bones and a resorption of calcium into the kidney. 
But which one is better? According to theory, most scientists say that D3 is several times more potent as a source of vitamin D than D2. That means your horse needs a lot of exposure to sunlight. Either that, or your horse needs even more D2 to make up for the lack of D3. This can be achieved through eating hays which have been dried in the sun and from supplements. 
What Does Vitamin D Do for a Horse?
Vitamin D does a lot for horses, just like it does a lot for people. When your horse is exposed to sunshine, vitamin D3 works to increase its calcium blood levels. Just like how humans thrive on vitamin E for the upkeep of our bones, joints, and muscles, so too do horses. They use vitamin D to have proper muscle functions and enough calcium for healthy bones and joints.
Is Vitamin D Really Necessary?
Vitamin D is absolutely necessary for your horse. It’s critical that every horse has optimal levels of vitamin D to maintain proper health. Without vitamin D, your horse could experience a deficiency, and this can result in a whole lot of nasty problems for the animal, including a reduction in appetite, slow growth, the demineralization of bones, easily fractured bones, possible deformities, and often poor muscle contraction. 
Basically, your horse needs vitamin D to survive and thrive. Because vitamin D plays such an important role with the health of bones and joints, it would be preposterous to neglect such an important hormone.
It’s also important to understand when your horse is not getting enough vitamin D. If your horse is stabled quite frequently, if they are stabled during the day and only let outside at night, if they are bathed too frequently, or if you live in a place with very little sunshine, your horse could develop a deficiency. It’s also common in the winter that horses sometimes lack the Vitamin D they require.
How Much Vitamin D to Give a Horse?
It is generally recommended that the average horse has 6.6 IU of vitamin D per kilogram of their body weight each and every day. That equals roughly 3,300 IU per day for a horse that weighs 500 kilograms (1,100 lbs.). Keep in mind that if your horse is outside for between 5 to 8 hours a day in the sun without some kind of outerwear and not coated in bug spray, the necessary requirements for vitamin D will be fulfilled. 
You should also keep in mind that in hay, there is virtually no vitamin D. If you live in a place without sun or if your horse is unable to get the appropriate amount of this vitamin, it’s absolutely critical that you provide supplementations through proper feed or healthy supplements.
Vitamin D Toxicity in Horses
Believe it or not, vitamin D can be toxic for horses. This does not include sunshine. Horses absolutely cannot overdose on vitamin D3 when they are exposed to the sun. The serious danger comes when the horse is given too much vitamin D through supplements. The first outward signs of vitamin D toxicity, also known as vitamin D toxicosis are decreased appetite, weight loss, depression, and limb stiffness. 
There was one study in which young ponies who were fed 14,000 IU of vitamin D per kilogram of their body weight on a daily basis were afflicted with acute toxicity and serious calcification of the kidney, lungs, heart, and other organs – and the toxicity occurred within just ten days.
This is a pretty horrendous thing to happen, so make sure you never let your horse overdose on vitamin D supplements. Chronic toxicity involves calcification of the kidneys, severe weight loss, and rarefication of bone. This will generally occur when 3,500 IU of vitamin D per kilogram of body weight are ingested daily. Do keep in mind that tolerable doses vary depending on a few different factors, such as the intake of calcium and other nutrients that effect calcium metabolism. These include phosphorus, protein, vitamin A, and magnesium.
The good news here is that vitamin D toxicity is incredibly rare. Considering a horse needs upwards of 3,000 IU of vitamin D to get sick and the recommended dose is 6.6, you would have to try very hard to poison your horse.

In all seriousness, YES YOU CAN and it’s bad. Don’t do it. There are two kinds of vitamins: water soluble and fat soluble. Water soluble (like C, B) you just pee out the excess. Fat soluble (like A, D, E, K) can build up and cause problems. Too much Vit D can mess with calcium absorption.
I’d recommend getting your levels tested before you supplement, then getting them tested while you supplement to figure out how much you really need to be taking. Even at 40,000IU/week my levels were the lowest end of normal. Most people don’t need nearly that much.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but what's your new vitamin D regime? I'm interested myself because I barely get any sunlight as is because I'm always working and I always feel so much better and like my actual self when I spend a lot of time in the sun.
Well, I’m taking supplements daily. I’m very deficient/stupidly low in the D (take that in all the ways, because it’s true, ha!), so they had me on 50,000IU once a week for three months, but that wasn’t sustaining a higher Vit D content in my body.
So basically the doc told me to take between 5,000 and 10,000IU/ a day to keep the levels up, then they’ll retest. I’ve literally only been doing 10,000IU a day since Saturday (I’m just going to do 70,000 a week because I’m that low) and I already feel better. Sleep has been better. Mood has improved. I’m hurting less. I take it in the mornings, though, and with food. It metabolizes better. 
Also, if you plan to start supplementing, take D3, not D2. D2, as I’ve read, is not as efficient, and D3 is the D your body makes naturally, and studies are beginning to show that D3 is just all around better at everything.
Eventually, I plan to incorporate more sun exposure time when I can. I’ve very pale, so I usually cover up, wear tons of sunscreen and stay out of the sun as much as possible… thus my problems. But the idea is to sit outside with bare arms and legs for 15-30 minutes at high noon, but any sun time is better than none. NO SUNSCREEN. I know, skin cancer and all that, but it shouldn’t be long enough to cause a burn unless you are very, very pale. You can also use a tanning bed.
