43. Undone (Gen, 386)

“Ah, girl, there you are! I believe you are the most qualified person to consult for the nature of my current experiment.”

Nenio had made herself at home at a table in the corner of the Defender’s Heart. Ariadne had to stop to get their bearings for a few reasons - one, it was unusual not to see Daeran and the Storyteller occupying this particular corner, their favored chairs stored away somewhere else for the evening, and two, the set up they were currently privy to would not have been out of place back home in their father’s laboratory.

“Girl? What happened to Ariadne?” She asked, deciding to leave the most obvious questions alone for a moment. Like what Nenio was doing with five different types of alcohol that close to an open flame.

“Yes, yes, Ariadne. Old habits die hard, I’m sorry.” Nenio’s voice was distant, though thankfully not in the way it had been when she’d been undone in Areshkagal’s realm. This was the distance of distraction, most of her focus riveted on the bottles in front of her. “Anyways, I have decided to rely on your expertise here.”

“Alchemy?”

“Booze.”

“Oh.” Ariadne tried not to let their disappointment show. They might not act like it, but they were a bit of a genius, after all! Instead, they followed up with, “Is this a repeat of the experiment where you got drunk?”

“Which one? Oh, no, not right now. Right now I am testing the theory that mixing certain types will increase the combustibility. Which two do you recommend?”

So it was alchemy after all! Visibly brightening, Ariadne surveyed her results. On one hand, there was a combination that was sure to leave an impression…but considering Gemyl already didn’t seem to like them, perhaps blowing up half his tavern wasn’t the way to go about getting into his good graces.

“Mix the elven absinthe with the firewater from the Five Kings Mountains.” Was it just them, or was there an indignant gasp from Daeran’s general direction?

Nenio nodded, mixing the two liquids together as assuredly as they’d just said that. A flame rose from the mixture, crackling cheerfully, embers dancing in a hypnotizing pattern.

“Hm…it is lacking the explosion I was hoping for,” Nenio said, then sighed, “But I have to admit it is pretty.”

"Lass!" A calloused hand clapped her heartily on the shoulder. "My new friends here tell me you have a trick for making the swill they serve here more palatable."

From behind the bar, Gemyl Hawkes gave the big man a dour look. Ulbrig ignored it.

Zephis looked up from her mug of beer. Behind Ulbrig, a boisterous table of crusaders were laughing and cheering each other so raucously that their drink slopped from their tankards. One of them, more sober than his fellows, caught her eye and hoisted his glass in a toast.

Wordlessly, Zephis lifted her hand and placed it, palm down, just above Ulbrig's mug. Then it was just a simple bit of kinesis, as easy as exhaling, and the pale liquid in the glass stilled as it cooled.

"Remarkable," Ulbrig said, turning his mug this way and that. Instead of returning to his table, he joined her, hoisting himself onto the barstool next to her. "You ought to be careful with that, though. A party trick like that could get you killed in Sarkoris."

A chill raced through Zephis' blood, and unbidden, ice crystals crawled up her arms, climbing over her exposed tattoos. Too late, she remembered who she was talking to.

"Are we going to have a problem?" she asked quietly, knuckles tight around her own mug.

"No reason we should," he replied, jovial enough. "Our traditions may be the wisdom of our ancestors, but we don't follow them blindly."

As if to prove it, he took a long pull from the mug she'd just magicked before continuing. 

"What you do, it's like no magic I've ever seen. You've proven yourself to no gods. But you fight with the strength of your arms, and you tire with them, too, just as any warrior would. Maybe that's all that's needed in the battle against these oglins and fey."

Zephis relaxed, the ice melting away. Still, she couldn't help but correct him. "Demons."

Ulbrig drained his mug. "Whatever."

In her own mug, Zephis hid her smile.

I love this minor interaction you can have in the very beginning of the game if you play as a dhampir.

For one, this is where my headcanon for Iona’s flask of blood comes from. She keeps the flask that Gemyl gave her for the entire crusade, tied to her thigh to keep it warm (well, as warm as her half-dead body can manage), and full of whatever non-demon blood she can get her hands on.

But also, in the chaos of the demon invasion and the city burning around them, Iona had a moment of comfort with that drink. Even in her most hedonistic and self-indulgent days of recent past, blood was a flavor she enjoyed all too rarely. Particularly elf blood, which is her favorite. So she got to have a moment of warmth and happiness even as the world descended into chaos around her.

Keeping that flask for the duration of the crusade was a constant reminder of that happy moment, and a promise of a return to normalcy.
