Kinuyo Tanaka in The Life of Oharu (Kenji Mizoguchi, 1952)
Cast: Kinuyo Tanaka, Tsukie Matsuura, Ichiro Sugai, Toshiro Mifune, Toshiaki Konoe, Kiyoko Tsuji, Hisako Yamane, Jukichi Uno, Eitaro Shindo, Akira Oizumi, Kyoko Kusajima, Masao Shimizu, Daisuke Kato. Screenplay: Kenji Mizoguchi, Yoshikata Yoda, based on a novel by Saikaku Ihara. Cinematography: Yoshimi Hirano. Production design: Hiroshi Mizutani. Film editing: Toshio Goto. Music: Ichiro Saito.
Oharu (Kinuyo Tanaka) is by turns a lover, a concubine, a courtesan, a servant, a wife, a prostitute, and a nun, which in the 17th-century Japan of Kenji Mizoguchi's film is almost everything a woman could possibly be. But Tanaka's great performance individualizes Ohara, keeping her from just being a representative figure, a stand-in for Woman. Over the course of the film, Oharu suffers almost every indignity that could be inflicted on her: At the court in Kyoto where she is a lady in waiting, she falls in love with a page, Katsunosuke (Toshiro Mifune), but when their affair is discovered, she and her parents are expelled and he is beheaded. One day a courtier for a powerful feudal lord comes to the village where they are exiled: The lord is in need of an heir, and his wife is barren. Oharu fits his rather exacting specifications to the letter, so she is brought to his palace where she bears him a son, but she's not allowed to nurse the child and is expelled from the household by his jealous wife. She goes to work as a courtesan to pay off the debts incurred by her greedy father (Ichiro Sugai), takes a job as maid to a woman who suspects her of sleeping with her husband, marries a man who is killed by robbers, and becomes a Buddhist nun but is expelled from the temple for supposedly seducing a man who was actually trying to rape her. Years pass and she loses her beauty and now walks the streets to earn money to survive, but she is subjected to scorn and mockery as a "goblin cat" by a man leading a group of young pilgrims. Hope dawns when she is summoned to meet her son, who has succeeded his father as lord, but it turns out that the officials in the court really want to cover up the fact that their lord's mother has been a prostitute, so she runs away after only a brief and distant glimpse of him. At the end she wanders the streets as an itinerant nun receiving alms in exchange for prayers -- her prostitution is now spiritual rather than physical. It's easy to take a synopsis like this and dismiss the story as "lachrymose as a soap opera," and "a reverse Horatio Alger adventure," as a particularly obtuse New York Times review did when The Life of Oharu was first released in the United States in 1964. It is neither of those things, of course. Even the Times reviewer was struck by Tanaka's performance, Mizoguchi's direction, and Yoshimi Hirano's cinematography, without understanding how or why these elevate the story into art. The story comes from a 17th-century novel by Saikaku Ihara, The Life of an Amorous Woman, a work far more erotic and picaresque than the melancholy screenplay Mizoguchi and co-screenwriter Yoshikata Yoda derived from it. The Life of Oharu is unremittingly grim -- it put me in mind of the novels of Thomas Hardy, whose characters suffer more than seems absolutely necessary for the author to make his point about the workings of fate. But the film is not about suffering; it's about strength, and women's strength in particular.

[Saena goes to Ananta’s house to look for the moon. ]
The Senate decided: Do you have any questions now? How can I find anything here? !
[With the room on the right covered in sweat and blood, he arrives in time to find Duma dead of pneumonia. She held his head and looked at him and his limp body as tears streamed down her face.
If: A thousand steps…? [Bring her head close to his and pet her until she calms down. Her eyes filled with tears. ]
The Senate decided: You’ll have to wait for me. What would I do without you? Who am I without you? (Two young men are watching him, smiling.)
Consider this: Unity; [Sana turns to them. ]
Inosuke looked into her eyes and thought: In four hours? ! What does it say?
Consider this: Not you…
Canada: Tokito’s partner? ! [Looks at your real name with interest, then turns away. ]
The Senate decided: Don't tell him. (wait) Who? Tokyo;
Inosuke thought: to leave
Consider this: I have to fight -
[Cena shrugs and raises his hands above his head as if to speak. ]
The Senate decided: [Turns and runs out of the room. The girls giggled as he entered the Infinity Castle. ] Tokito. Tokyo.
[First, you have to escape the castle. ]
The Senate decided: My name is Nat. April Brad Kirkus. But… there’s more. 【Looks like you heard something. It smells like blood. damn you He looked around the garden and saw Guozhibu and Zhu. Guozhi had turned into a monster, and the two little assassins fell to their deaths. Her dark hair was dyed pink and the sight of it made her smile. Yoshimi started laughing as he turned to Kakuchibo. Cena gets angry and runs at them, dropping his stuff. ]
[Saneya breaks down, Yoshimi looks at Sen as blood drips onto his kimono. Oh, now he knew he shouldn't hurt them. ION doesn’t allow them. Sanami wakes up and talks about Genia while Sena looks at her dead brother. ]
On the back, a picture: Go, God! Please, my brothers! Please!
GOMEI approaches him quietly until GENYA is satisfied.
clothes: Enjoy Nasukawa River. Look up. [They all turn to you. He was still looking at his brother's body. Even if there’s blood everywhere, he doesn’t care].
On topic: Greetings, Sī Akali Aloo! [Sena finally turns towards them, faceless but eyes open. for ions. Sanemi had a chance to respond, but Giomi put a hand on his shoulder. It’s not a choice. He can't do that. He didn't understand. Who speaks it? No; who doesn’t love MUICHIRO? Oh my god, what happened? He looked down at his hands and his old friend. there are a lot of them. To Sanem’s surprise, the top four left. ]
[Cena doesn’t kill him, but that doesn’t save him from going berserk when he finds out Muse has survived. Still distraught and excited, he drew his sword and dismissed the men. But instead of attacking, he placed the Hirano Katana on the right side of his chest and began to use it on his body. In his mind, he committed seppuku and in theory he stabbed her to death. Sanami then appears, grabs her sword and screams.

Japanese radio interview (1998)
* SOME REVISIONS TO SPELLING/GRAMMAR/WORDING *
Reporter:  I know that this is a very short visit in Japan. Have you done anything while  in Tokyo? Faye: Yes, I went shopping on the first two days. I bought  clothes and shoes. Reporter: The title of your new album is "Sing and Play". Did you enjoy the recording and do you like this title? Faye: Not really. There were so many things that happened during the recording. But basically I enjoyed it. Reporter: How long did it take to make this album? Faye: About a year from the preparation to the release. Reporter: I think one year is a long time to make an album. Faye: I wanted to spend more time on the album. I think I need more time to relax and a lot of space to make an album. Reporter: I see. Here we will listen to Faye's song from the new album.
[FACE is played]
Reporter: I like this song very much. Her voice is really impressive. In this album, you wrote 4 songs. I think your own songs sound different from the other songs by other composers. Did you count on the balance of your songs and other songs? Faye: No. Every composer has their own sense so it's natural that every song sounds different. I didn't count on it.
Reporter: Did you want to write more yourself? Faye: Of course I want to write more songs by myself in every album but I can't write many songs at one time. It takes me so much time to write a song so I don't think I can make an album with just all the songs written by me. Reporter: I think you've tried something new in your songs over what exists currently in Chinese pop. Do you see and hear the new movement in the music industry? Faye: Not especially. When I find what I like, I want to make a good song like it. Reporter: What kind of music do you listen to? Faye: Well, I worked with the Cocteau Twins and they wrote me three songs. There have been a lot of artists I've been influenced by. The very first singer was Teresa Teng, who introduced me to popular music. R&B, rock, Sinead O'Conner, The Cranberries and singers in Mainland China who aren't so known.
Reporter: I know you've had some trouble with the media because you speak very frank. What do you think of the media in Japan?
Faye: I don't think they are rude. They are very polite and I think they are nice.
Reporter: Does that mean the media in other countries aren't polite?
Faye: Yes, especially in Hong Kong. I've been in Hong Kong  for a long time and I've had some trouble with them. Because they don't respect the artists. They are interested in the artists' private life too much and I don't like it. So I've had some trouble with them.
Reporter: I see. Now we're going to listen to another song from "Sing and Play". I heard you dedicated this song to your child. Has your view of life changed after having a baby?
Faye: Having a baby was one of the most important experiences for me but I don't think my view of life has changed that much.  Whether you are single, you are married, or you have a baby, it's very important to be independent. I don't think it's good to rely on someone else or something else. If I rely on my daughter, I can't anticipate anything at all.
Reporter: Even though she has a baby, her style is perfect. It's incredible. This song is full of love for her daughter. Let's listen to it.
[TONG is played]
Reporter: We can hear the baby's voice. Is it your daughter's voice?
Faye: Yes
Reporter: Wow, she sounds very cute. What did she say in the end of the song?
Faye: She said bye-bye and I kissed her.
Reporter: Really cute! In fact, her daughter is here, too. She looks very cute and I envy her.  In Japan, there are many fans who expect you to be in movies  but you seem to have a love for music more than the movies, don't you?
Faye: I have confidence in singing but I don't think I can act well.
Reporter: People who have seen the movie don't think so. I like you as an actress and I think Quentin Tarantino does too. Is there any possibility that you'll be in a Hollywood movie?
Faye: I don't think of such a thing. I don't have a talent for acting and I'm not equal to the task.
Reporter: Well, then, how about concerts in Japan? Do you have any plans for them?
Faye: I'm planning to hold one in March next year.
Reporter: Wow. Lots of fans are looking forward to it. Thank you so much for coming.
Faye: Thank you.
The DJ said Faye can speak English but she wanted to speak Mandarin during the interview because she wanted to accurately express what she was saying.
