I have a weirdly fun dream where Yoojin and Yoohyun are mistaken to be the Yoohankim's children. I mean, i can see why; Yoohyun looks and acts like YJH, Yoojin is a menace like KDJ but sassy like HSY and the two brothers share the Han last name.

Cannot quite remember the details (don't we ever) but i think it was a sort of constellation's mission and they only need to watch (?) those two. Uriel was swooning over how brocon Yoohyun was. HSY was groaning when she saw Yoojin fawning over his brother because it reminds her too much of a certain rat bastard. KDJ's reaction is to play dead.

mild novel spoilers ahead but no big story moments or anything just. brief mentions of skills they get later and such

okay so weve got 2 options here, right (well technically theres 6 ways to arrange 3 objects but. if we assume each of them swaps into someone else. theres 2). first one. kdj -> yjh, yjh -> hsy, hsy -> kdj. right off the bat - extremely funny. kdj in yjhs body having the time of his life (i am the protagonist!!), but also adjusts fairly quickly bc like. hes done this before. hsy in kdjs body is a menace. immediately rummaging through his pockets. everyone is unsettled by unreadable normalguy kdj making hsys evil little gremlin expressions. and yjh in hsys body is like. immediately getting bullied because his menacing aura does not work at all in hsys 5 foot frame. kdj-as-yjh is picking him up by the scruff of the neck and all he can do is glare murderously

second arrangement. kdj -> hsy, hsy -> yjh, yjh -> kdj. i think i like this one less but lets see. yjh as kdj is pretty good, i think yjh would be disgruntled no matter who he swaps bodies with but since the 2 of them are on such even footing in the narrative, i think actually spending time in kdjs weak pathetic body would make him lose some respect for him lmfao. like "what have you been doing all this time that your body is in such poor shape. pathetic." hsy as yjh is extremely salty about how op he is. muttering about cliches under her breath. definitely uses her new power to relentlessly bully kdj (omg wait that means hsys body is getting harassed by yjhs body in both scenarios..... what can i say. shes the perfect size to be bothered. the only reason she isnt bothered more in canon is because of her sharp teeth - i stand by this). kdj as hsy is. unremarkable i think. loudly complains about how much shorter he is now just to piss her off. finds an unholy amount of candy in her pockets and publicly shames her about it until she points yjhs sword at him and he shuts up real quick.

honestly i think both of these scenarios have great potential for physical comedy though. they all have such different mannerisms and such different appearances that reshuffling them is always gonna be striking. i need to draw it.....

okay lets talk logistics. do they keep all their skills or do the skills stay with the body? they probably keep them, although it might be more interesting to have like. physical skills like swordfighting and whatnot stay with the body. so if they get stuck like that for a while and end up fighting in each others bodies they kinda have to adapt to the bodies skills and fighting style. could be fun! hmmm that kinda leaves whoevers in kdjs body in the lurch though, since all his skills are mental..... and then kdj has a massive advantage, because surely the bookmark skill gets a boost if hes literally in the body of the person hes copying. so perhaps they keep all their skills - hsys avatar skill in yjhs protagonist body would be pretty op. and yjh has so many skills that he could make anything work - he might end up ripping kdjs body to shreds though lmfao. also im not sure if we get much of kdj using hsy as a bookmark in the novel? i actually dont remember an instance of it, although i can see him wanting to steal predictive plagiarism so it may have happened and i just forgot. but anyway kdj as hsy using bookmark + avatar, and then hsy as yjh also using avatar is an INSANE combo. two man army. and then theres kdjs body there like *struggling to hold up a sword* "i am yoo joonghyuk......" *passes out* LMAO sorry kdj i know youre not that pathetic its just so funny to imagine the protagonists sheer power literally destroying your fragile salaryman body from the inside out.

omg also. if the swap lasts more than a few minutes theyre DEFINITELY getting their weapons and coats back from their bodies. black coat hsy...... wait omg. okay i know kdjs coat is like a high grade magic item that changes size with him. not sure if yjhs is the same but allow me for a moment - yjh-as-hsy trying to look menacing (already failing) but his coat is way too big. its dragging on the floor. the sleeves cover his hands. 😭😭😭😭 its so ridiculous...... other notable combos - white coat hsy (head in hands). hsy-as-yjh gets yjhs coat stolen from her which means the protagonist physique is on full display - she makes a comment about how WoS should have made more use of this kind of fanservice and now she and kdj are arguing. black coat kdj..... i am yoo joonghyuk......

okay i think thats all i got for now. i hope its in character because i really havent read orv in a while..... anyway i think this has a lot of potential so i wanna try drawing it - maybe ill have more thoughts on specific character interactions once i can like,, put personalities to faces lmao

tbh I'm so happy there is no explicit romance in orv (minus the brief stuff that happens with jhw and lhs) and because of that I feel like I've been able to appreciate kdj in such a profound way as a character

like sure i like joongdok and yoohankim but to me at least kdj has this level of asexuality to him that I don't usually associate him with anyone that romantically. And their relationships are still as complex and has such a great depth that they are like THE foundest of families and I can return to the kim dokja company at the end of the day as all of them being my comfort characters. you know that saying like 'i love you so much i'd make the world burn for you'? it's meant to be this dramatic line about how much you love someone (romantically), but kdj's company fully encapsulates this in a platonic way that just isn't cringey or anything like that

they are all so platonic but they love each other to such an unconditional way that they ALL decide to relive through all the scenarios again in the hope of finding kim dokja again. and later, they all help to write and spread a story - stories, the thing the reader loves - again, in hopes of bringing kdj back home. they aren't sure if it'll work, but it is through this love they all have that they don't give up and put their hope in this seemingly impossible method

and this is also what makes them fundamentally different from kdj. unlike kim dokja in the apocalypse, they do not have any sort of proof their methods will work. kdj has twsa - the novel he grew up reading, the novel he fantasized living in, the novel that he's spent 13 years following, learning every nook and cranny and probably even planning out his own way to survive the apocalypse from this lengthy novel. he has some sort of assurance his methods will work, with the amount of time hsy put into describing the settings (remember that twsa was not popular and one of the complaints was that tls123 put too much emphasis on the settings that deterred people from reading it, when really, that too was a way to ensure kdj survived the apocalypse later on). he has had time to reassure himself and plan for it, and probably had yjh case test them all

but kdj's company had no assurance - they did not grow up with a book that confirmed their methods of bringing kdj back would work. they did not have any 'third plans', no 'ressurections', no 'restarts', that kdj had in the apocalypse. all they had was their own hope - something kdj didn't have when he was fifteen sitting in that hospital bed after that failed suicide attempt, feeling like the whole world was against him. Until he searched up those three words on his phone. Those three words that were probably 'Ways of Survival'.

And then he found his hope in twsa. he found his hope in yjh, the protagonist made just for him. he found hope in the story that he believed in for the next thirteen years. the story that got him through high school, the CSATs, the military. his hope was in this tangible book that carried him through the apocalypse.

kdj's company had none of that. they only had their hope in kim dokja - the man they survived the scenarios with. they could only put their hope in their memories of surviving with the man that saved them, even though there was no evidence he lived in their world anymore. they had to put their hope in the fact that they remembered he existed, even though they had to acknowledge that they didn't know everything about him.

sing shong touches upon this idea a lot throughout orv - does something really exist if no one knows about it? or, in a more modern saying, did a fallen tree in a forest really fall if no one heard it? what proves the existence of something? what proves that something truly happened? sing shong seems to make it pretty clear that the existence of something can be represented metaphorically like a 'story', and stories need a 'reader', some sort of spectator that witnesses it, for the 'story' to exist.

for kim dokja, his final sacrifice, where he split into infinite little pieces scattered across the universe, was to ensure that everything existed. that open ending, as tragic as it was, was meant to be comforting. that his sacrifice was supposed to be so existences like you and me, are real. no matter how lonely we may feel throughout our lives, a metaphorical 'kim dokja' is looking at our own stories, spectating our own stories, even living our own lives himself.

and what i hate to say sometimes is that kim dokja is not really a character - he is an idea. he is an idea of some being affirming our lives, that it's real, that what we do from day to day, even something as simple as getting up in the mornings and brushing your teeth, or thumbing through a store catalog, matters. and this is why kim dokja sacrificed himself. for all the stories that may have not 'existed' if no one was watching it.

and it's out of love. this tragic, terrible love for the world, that eats away at yourself until you are nothing. but at least you exist.

Just thought up a Mage And Demon Queen DokJoong AU idea oh no ← has to reread MADQ now :) take some of the AU I've thought up in the spur of trying to sleep at an actually goos schedule (YooHanKim/Doksoo near the end)

Yoo Joonghyuk is an all-rounder hero, currently practicing in the Mage role

Kim Dokja is the Demon King Of Salvation, ruler of the monsters

YJH has been in love with The Demon King Of Salvation since he was 15-17

He doesn't remember much from his youth, most of it is blurry or non existent

But his first meeting with KDJ is very vivid to this day

Extremely powerful, with a fiery glint in his eye that could be mistaken for stars, yet lonely as well. At least until the Demon King looked at him

In which, KDJ just looked at him with some sort of... Sympathy? KDJ's troops asked if there was anything there

Clutching onto his sister with distress, YJH screwed his eyes shut. But, instead of exposing the siblings, KDJ let them go...?

Then, YJH was awfully offended. Was that arrogant bastard pitying him? He internally thanked him, but he still felt resentment

But eventually that resentment drifted away as he became stronger, becoming a famous All-Rounder that could fill any position

All he really wanted to do was meet the Demon King again, as he tried to brush away the crush he had as "admiration"

When he met him again, the only hero to get to him... He was in the form of a 17 year old...?

"Why are you... A child?" He asked, genuinely bemused. The Demon King's reply was, "Why? I thought you would think that those who claimed to have seen my appearance were lying. You know dead ones tell no tales."

Externally, Yoo Joonghyuk was glaring at him. Internally, he was thinking about how terrifying that line would be if he wasn't himself ← actually felt chills when KDJ said that line

"...hhh, fine you caught me. I'm not 17 or whatever." Standing up from his throne, he shifted into a form closely aged to YJH, perhaps a little older. With raven colored wings that reflect the stars, and horns that looked to be soaked with blood.

"Now, Yoo Joonghyuk, the all-rounder hero of the kingdom named 'Starstream'," he strided towards him, YJH couldn't help but gulp as he saw the Demon King lick his teeth. "Give me a taste of the hatred I've gained from your race. With. your. sword. ...Or wand."

YJH felt bloodlust coming from KDJ, and shivered involuntarily. "Why aren't you moving, Joonghyuk-ah?" The floor was gaining more and more cracks as the Demon King sped up.

YJH hoped he had masked his flinch when the other had called him so informally, "...I-"

"you know, It's your duty...To. Slay. Me." Punctuating each line, he was inches away from cutting off Yoo Joonghyuk's head... Until...

"I love you..." YJH blurted out, trying to act cool even while his mind was SCREAMING at him, Why'd he have to go and say that?!

When YJH didn't feel his head cut off, he cracked an eye open to see the Demon King's face. He looked very scrambled, his eyebrows furrowed sadly, and his eyes blown wide with his mouth open wide

He then realized that... KDJ had this look during the whole time he was about to slash him, just with a smile masking it.

"...eh?" Was the only noise that came out of the Demon King as he tried to search YJH's eyes, looking for any fallacy. "...are you joking with me right now?"

"...You're serious." He straightened up, moving his sword down at his side. YJH only nodded.

The Demon King just stared him down. Until he called his guard, "Heewon!!" And had her send YJH back to the temple. (By killing him)

YJH kept coming back though and KDJ was always super flustered when he showed up. But never tried to kill him? He always made Jung Heewon kill him or someone else

Yoo Joonghyuk is the reincarnation of Han Sooyoung, and Kim Dokja sees a LOT of similarities between them

Han Sooyoung was Kim Dokja's first love, though he realized too late

She was human, and he, a half monster. They were forbidden but, Han Sooyoung never cared.

She wrote him stories about heros and he loved it. It distracted him from how the human village would abuse him.

...eventually, HSY became a pwerful mage and... She murdered the entire village. Making him the Demon King through her love for him and making him immortal.

Their final moments were like this:

HSY was chuckling through coughs of blood as she was held by the newly formed Demon King, KDJ, in the rain

"You... Why did you do this?!" Kim Dokja half shouted through a sob. "I... I didn't... I didn't need this, Sooyoung!"

"No... You did, Dokja. Your useless ass would have put up with this treatment until the day you died. Now, you have the power to fight back like you've always wanted." HSY stared at him with clouded eyes.

"Not like this!" KDJ's head lowered covering his eyes with his hair. "How am I... How am I supposed to live without you...? Forever...?"

Hsy lifted her arm gently to brush away Kim Dokja's hair and cradle his cheek, he leaned into the blood soaked hand, with tears falling.

"...I'll reincarnate," Kim Dokja just stared at her, trying to comprehend her nonsense in her final moments, "I'll reincarnate as a hero and find you."

Kim Dokja furrowed his brows, "...You'd have to kill me."

She just shook her head, "I'll change the story, and redeem you in the eyes of the people."

Han Sooyoung laughed, "Just like those stories I wrote when I was younger, when we were younger. You always loved those stories didn't you?"

He slowly nodded. "...I did."

She hummed, and lifted her other hand to his cheek, bringing him closer.

"...I love you." She whispered into his lips as she kissed him. Letting him taste the fruit of her love, the blood of those who abused him.

She went limp in his arms, just as the thunder from the rain made a loud crack. "...Sooyoung...!!!"

Ever since then, Kim Dokja was always wary of love. Especially human love. Specifically, love for him.

Those who did, did insane things.

God I love pain. And HSY reincarnates as YJH. WHERES THE FANFIC??? Wait is it even YooHanKim if YJH is the reincarnate of HSY? Is half of YooHanKim just selfcest in this case? Selfcest is fun so why not

KDJ was going into a HUGE bout of depression once and to distract himself he decided to read about the recent heros (for nostalgia) and he stumbled upon Yoo Joonghyuk's story. It intrigued him

He kept reading and listening to the stories and rumors about YJH until be basically knew what his deal was

When KDJ saw YJH when he was 15-17, it reminded him of HSY and himself so he let them go.

Funny how this turned out NOT to be a Mage And Demon Queen AU... Seems like it was just inspiration but it's fine. Now how to tag this monster of a post

decided to open my old "yjh gets turned into a cat" wip and. yeah i was definitely onto something

honestly the characterization in this is pretty rough - i think i made yjh too much of a tsundere and kdj too..... well-adjusted? so let's play in the space shall we

light spoilers??? no in-depth discussion of any specific events but it's sort of a character study so. y'know

part of the cathyuk appeal to me is like. he already basically shows affection like a cat. he seems standoffish but he just doesn't communicate in the same way..... he doesn't know how to show affection...... and then of course the rest of the appeal is. tortured loner op protagonist trapped in a fluffy and cute and sleepy little body. not exactly dramatic and brooding with those tiny little legs huh? and toe beans, no less? and part of that is also the vulnerability of it - it's not like he can really protect himself from the kind of threats they expect to be facing. there's appeal in forcing the guy who always tries to do everything himself to take a break, but. well. that role isn't exactly filled by yjh anymore, is it?

and in fact, if we assign kdj to take care of cathyuk (which was my original plan bc i think this was before i started thinking about yoohankim 24/7. reformed joongdok shippers represent ‼️‼️) then that could be an interesting exploration of the way kdj already views yjh as someone who needs to be protected/taken care of (because of The Guilt). forcing them to confront the unbalanced nature of their relationship..... via cat transformation......

okay but. we must not forget han sooyoung. hmmm yoohan interactions are so difficult for me cause we don't really see much of them interacting together outside of 1863 or like. the epilogue. oh and that one time they scammed anna croft LOL. hmmmmm and like. on one hand. i think it's really fun if hsy understands cat body language better than anyone else and can now read yjh in ways even kdj can't. but also, as cat coded as hsy is, she doesn't seem like she would really like cats? well actually. those two ideas can coexist. and that kind of does apply to their relationship already - she understands him well enough (well, at least him as a character) but just doesn't really get along with him.

anyway. idk if this can fit together in a satisfying way or anything - i might revisit it at some point but i doubt it. having one character get turned into an animal as a catalyst for slowburn is one of my favourite highly-specific-and-yet-every-fandom-seems-to-have-it fanfic tropes (along with accidental baby acquisition and getting stuck in a small space together. put those guys in a ridiculous situation!!!!) so that's probably why i wanted to try it with jd originally. it's definitely fun but i can't really get anything to stick beyond the basic concept - sometimes you just have to imagine The Character as a disgruntled cat getting scooped up off the floor and bombarded with kissies. for your mental health. you understand

i am SO distressed right now what the fuckkkkk. i read a BUNCH of orv to pass time on a long plane ride and i think that was maybe not one of my best ideas……….. screaming sobbing punching the wall dramatically i hate this book so much

i’m right before they all group regress and Fuck. What The Fuck. i finally know what 51/49 means and can i go back to not knowing. what the fuck. and then,,,, yjh’s 0th turn???? if i continue to regress will i ever get to meet you again??????? that affecting the other world line??????????? and even before that too, with the oldest dream reveal,, FUCK. like i sort of expected it but it was still so devastating to read. and THEN. the quote that’s like “the oldest dream was the worlds most omniscient yet powerless god” or something. OW. i feel like i’ve been stabbed repeatedly. every time i type out another sentence in this ask i want to sob.

and then,,,,, his companions realizing something’s wrong. han sooyoung being the first to act on this because the kim dokja she knows best is the one that isn’t here. yoo joonghyuk choosing to regress (in both this world and the 0th turn) for that sliver of a chance that he’ll see kdj again. and the fact that kdj doesn’t consider even once that this might happen, that his companions would realize something was different. and this isn’t even something new! in all the times he sacrifices himself, he fails to truly acknowledge how much it affects the ones he cares about. he doesn’t comprehend (or is unwilling to comprehend) how much he is loved. his happily ever after doesn’t even include him, not fully — and i don’t think he believes he’s deserving of that happily ever after, either. he’s a reader. he doesn’t realize that this is his own story, too. goddddd i hate this book SO much (<- lying)

oldest dream & kdj………….. tbh i think that must be so heartbreaking on both sides. kdj seeing his younger self and being so upset because at the end of the day it was him causing suffering for the people he loves most but oldest dream seeing his older self coming to fucking kill him and thinking that it didn’t get any better at all. he can’t even be loved by himself who else would love him then
