Background

Johan was born to Marie Lisbet Suiderkloof and Anton Martinus Suiderkloof as part of a pair of twins. His family was a group of goudstoft farmers (Goudstoft- literally, "Golden dust"- being a sour-tasting plant whose leaves produce gold tinted smoke when burnt and induces a minor psychoactive response in the minds of whomever inhales said fumes. Often used to create cigarettes), and his six older brothers each turned out to be bioworkers specializing in flora whose job it was to ensure that the Goudstoft plants grew as well as possible and year round, giving the Suiderkloof family an advantage in trade of the plant and indirectly contributing to an agricultural revolution.

His parents were both of mixed descent, with the majority of their bloodlines coming from Chenyi to the north, the original Vosch settlers in Ost-Rietland, and a multitude of others including Ostian, Naveja, and possibly even a bit of Somaj. Although they are officially classified as simply being of mixed descent, people with similar ancestry to them are incredibly common in the Rietland Republics, and over the centuries have even developed their own culture that borrows from their various lineages along with elements unique to them. As a result, many contemporary political groups (specifically those of this kind of mixed descent) are actually pushing for legislature to have people like them be defined as a separate and distinct ethnic group.

For a long time it was believed that Johan and his sister- Aletta Mariaan Suiderkloof- would turn out to be nieheksen (a Vosch word describing people without magic. Not an insult) just like their parents.

However, as he grew older, Johan began to develop a sort of sixth sense regarding any kind of metal, to the point where if he told his mother that a part she was buying was faulty or of an alloy that wouldn't survive the work they needed it fot, she'd trust his intuition over the words of a qualified expert any day. The people of rural Zuurveldt being as superstitious as they are, his family and their workers assumed it was the spirits' gift to him, given that he had no magic to provide a 'natural' explanation.

When he was twelve, he watched a runaway harvester barrelling down on his brother, knowing he would surely be shredded into a fine red mist if it caught him, and without hesitating reached out and crushed the machine, stopping it in its tracks.

He was taken to be tested at the boarding school he and his sister attended later that year, and he clocked in as an order five metalworker. Aletta, however, never developed magic.

When he was sixteen, Rostov invaded the Rietland republics yet again, sparking the Fourth Frontier war. Despite their parents begging them not to go since they still remembered the previous conflict, he and his sister were young and of enlistment age, so they and their brothers left home to fight for their country, heads full of propaganda and lies about the glory of war.

The war was brutal, as such things tend to be, and as a way of coping with the stress he took to smoking goudstoft to help calm his nerves. Most of their brothers didn't make it back, and two of them died fighting the infamous Artyom Maxim, a Rostovan general and the highest ranking matterworker- hell, the highest rank mage outright- to ever be recorded. (Matterworkers are the most powerful caste of mage-, with direct control of all matter down to a subatomic level)

During the war, the twins were stationed at a borderwatch base with the Angeheimish 107th volunteer corps, which was where Johan met Maire.

After their tour of the warfront had ended, Johan and Aletta returned home, directed to the city of Doringpoort by letters from their family claiming that the farm had been sold and that they had moved that way to start a new business.

They would see the city, but they would never arrive.

While they were still on the train several miles from the city, general Artyom Maxim would stand trial for warcrimes within the Doringpoort human rights court, and although no one in-universe knows exactly what he did, as outside observers we can piece together what happened.

A bright flash, a deafening roar, and a rolling earthquake tailed by hurricane-force winds.

By the time people could rush to the cabin window, the city sat in ruins, and above it bloomed a smoke cloud in the shape of a mushroom, easily large enough to be seen for miles around. This event, later called the Doringpoort bombing, is the only case of a nuclear detonation in this world's history. Maxim had split the atom.

When the shockwave hit the train and derailed it, Johan's magic kicked in, deflecting a stray piece of debris flung from the city that would've impaled him, before the impact itself knocked him out. He awoke to a head splitting migraine, nausea, confusion, and the sight of his sister dead on the ground, impaled by the very debris he had deflected as a mere reflex.

For five years, no one would hear from or about Johan. It was assumed that he had also died to this strange ailment that seemed to afflict all survivors of the bombing.

Until one day he turned up in Zuidpunkt, setting up shop and advertising himself as a private investigator, where he would quickly Garner a reputation as the man you went to if you wanted an investigation done that the Stadwag were unwilling to. He was still cordial with everyone from his old unit, joking around, openly talking about the condition he now had and how difficult having a barely functional immune system or ability to naturally heal injuries made his life, although he would pointedly avoid any questions about where he had been for the past half a decade, simply saying that he had been travelling.

The only clues to his hidden past being the pendant of unidentifiable make that he seemed to always be wearing, and that he now ranked lower as a mage than he had in his youth.

Physical Appearance

Johan is tall, just about eye level with Sasha, with a weaselly appearance. Although it's quite difficult to see when he's wearing a trenchcoat (as he usually does), his body is extremely emaciated as a result of his medical condition, and since he can't naturally heal his own injuries anymore he's usually got a bandage wrapped around some or other part of his body until he can go to get it healed.

He has light but tanned skin and long ginger hair that he constantly complains about but rather keeps tied back instead of getting cut.

His eyes are green, and although he is no longer powerful enough for the same effect to occur anymore, his eyes used to turn grey whenever he used his magic. (Although, when adrenaline bolsters his magic it will still sometimes change)

Johan has a scar on his shoulder from getting shot in the war. He also has a suspiciously rune scaped scar on his chest that occasionally pokes out from his shirt.

Personality

Johan has a good sense of humour, however Rietlander humour has a tendency to come across as mean spirited or rude to foreigners, so he makes a conscious effort to suppress his desire to crack jokes.

He is methodical and logical, preferring to piece together as much information as possible before reaching conclusions, and will often keep his opinions to himself until such a time as they can either be proven irrefutably correct or serve a purpose in being revealed. This makes him someone that people will listen to whenever he advises against something or gives his two cents on a subject.

Johan abides by the old Vosch adage: 'En boer maakt en plann' [A farmer makes a plan], which essentially means that no matter how bad or bleak a situation is, as long as you have something, anything, on hand and something between your ears, you can find a way to make it work. Granted, this is meant to apply to farmers needing to come up with creative solutions to unexpected problems, however he likes to apply it to his own life as well.

He has an incredibly high tolerance of discomfort and mental strain, owing to the soul-grinding experience of being near constantly sick or injured due to his condition, and as a result tends to also be a beacon of patience and silent endurance.

Although he's only 23, he's often misconstrued as being significantly older than he actually is, to the point where people on the street or in shops who are clearly older than him refer to him as 'Uncle' (In the Vosch language, 'Uncle', 'Aunt' and variations thereof can be used as a slightly less formal variant of 'Sir', 'Miss', 'Missus', etc.). This isn't helped by the fact that he acts and occasionally feels like an old man

Having been raised in a former Vosch colony, he subscribes to their idea that how a person looks, presents, or chooses to live their life doesn't matter as long as they have something to contribute to society in some way, and also believes that everyone deserves a fair chance to provide that contribution and be fairly compensated for it.

Johan obsesses over profiling, and arguably enjoys the act of gathering information and constructing a psychological profile and history of various people he meets. However he only uses publicly available information to do this, and will only begin to sift through personal information if it's for a job. He's also very quick to back off if he feels that he's overstepping boundaries.

His problem is that he has a tendency to get stuck in his own head, either obsessing and worrying over a case to the point that Anastasia has to remind him to eat, or escalating his own anger by running back small arguments over and over again in his head, or by beating himself up over unavoidable and usually inconsequential mistakes.

He firmly believes that since he's dying anyway, it doesn't matter what happens to him (one of the reasons why he has no problem tracking down cults and hunting demons), and has stated on multiple occasions that where other people have things worth living for, he has things he'd gladly die for. He recognises that the cigarettes he smokes so readily aren't healthy for him, recognises that he likely has developed a kind of dependency on them, but he also feels that he's only got another six months left, so he'll enjoy the few vices he has.

Weapon of Choice

Johan has a pair of ornately made six-shot revolvers. When he and his sister came of age, they were each given a gun (as is tradition in rural Zuurveldt. Also a necessity given that there's no law to protect people out in the Fynbos).

In honour of her memory, he now uses her revolver as well.

Relation to the rest of the team

Sasha: He sees a disturbing amount of himself in her. How he was before the world happened, and despite his seemingly constant fights with her, he's also trying to make sure that she won't repeat his mistakes.

Anastasia: Officially, he's just her employer. Unofficially, she's like a sister to him.

Hans: Originally Hans was just his client, however their shared experience of living on a frontier and working as enforcers of the law in different ways became something for them to bond over as they were forced to work together for longer. Even though there were some nasty kinks that arose in their relationship, Johan was the first person that Hans trusted enough to tell his whole story to.

Maire: Johan's relationship with Maire is quite complex. Originally they started out as acquaintances who met often because of how regularly he had to get her to fix even the most minor of his wounds, and eventually became close friends. Johan acknowledges that there may have eventually been a spark of something more between them (although in what sense, he doesn't know), however he simply doesn't have the lifespan remaining for such a thing to develop.

BIOGRAFIA

Enquanto crescia, Lee Yohan sentia na pele as dificuldades do mundo. Sua mãe, uma mulher solteira e abandonada pelo marido, tinha que sustentar seus dois filhos pequenos e trabalhar para prover qualidade de vida dentro de casa. Os seus maiores desafios eram criar os seus filhos para serem homens dignos e fazê-los terem uma boa índole para que pudessem ter uma vida diferente. E Yohan, o filho mais novo viu seu sofrimento crescer a cada dia enquanto definhava porque é isso o que acontece quando não se pode deixar de trabalhar.

Aos olhos de Yohan, seu pai não prestava, a mãe era sua rainha, o irmão mais velho era uma espécie de herói por não sentir toda a raiva que estava sendo acumulada por anos dentro do seu corpo. Yohan tinha raiva do mundo, raiva por não ser privilegiado e muito menos ter sido coroado com uma inteligência a ser destacada. No entanto, tudo o que tinha era a sua vontade de mudar de vida. Por isso, quando a oportunidade surgiu, Yohan fez de tudo para conseguir, mostrando o único talento que usava para despejar a sua irritabilidade: os jogos online.

Quando tinha mais ou menos 15 anos, um amigo recomendou para descontar a sua raiva que Yohan aprendesse a jogar jogos fps, ou seja, de tiro. O vício surgiu assim que ele percebeu uma habilidade em concentração, audição e entendimento de jogo. Depois de dois anos, ele começou a fazer streaming de suas partidas com amigos e em pouco tempo já tinha um canal bem sucedido e uma proposta para jogar profissionalmente em um time que estava se formando.

Yohan não podia ser a linha trêmula no desenho perfeito. Recusava-se a ser a imperfeição em meio ao que fora meticulosamente construído. Não havia espaço para um erro; e erros, fossem quais fossem, deveriam ser sempre corrigidos, eliminados.

No entanto, ainda tremia diante do pecado de sentir.

Dos seus primeiros anos de infância até o início de sua vida adulta, Yohan viveu em Weinheim, na Alemanha, junto à mãe e sua irmã mais velha. A fuga da metrópole sempre havia sido um sonho da mãe, que preferia a vida calma e tranquila em meio à natureza. O pai de Yohan era o completo oposto e, mesmo mantendo-se casado com a mulher, continuou morando e trabalhando na capital coreana, onde criava sozinho o filho mais velho do casal — o futuro herdeiro da empresa de arquitetura da família e de todo o prestígio que vinha junto a isso. Yohan pouco ressentiu o pai ou o irmão, apesar de, desde muito novo, tentar compreender aquela dinâmica familiar. Via-os em datas comemorativas, quando iam todos para Seul. O pai nunca os havia visitado na Alemanha.

Durante sua adolescência, estudou em um internato em Heidelberg, uma cidade maior e próxima de onde havia se criado. Já tinha seu futuro decidido e recebia o apoio da mãe: iria estudar na Universidade de Heidelberg, focando seus estudos em História da Arte, tanto europeia quanto do leste asiático. Desde pequeno, sempre demonstrou interesse por todo tipo de arte: música, pintura, literatura, dança. Estudou um pouco de cada, tendo professores particulares renomados, mas mostrava uma aptidão e um amor maior pela pintura. As paredes da grande casa da família eram decoradas com seus quadros, sempre perfeitos. Os anos de internato foram, de certa forma, conturbados, e ele os passou com certa apatia. Não se encaixava com a maioria dos jovens, mas sempre preferiu sua própria companhia. Ingressou na faculdade da maneira que havia planejado, e tudo parecia um sonho.

Continuava sendo o garoto introspectivo e perfeccionista de sempre, mas os estudos eram sua paixão, e havia encontrado algumas poucas pessoas que compartilhavam de seus interesses. No entanto, ainda em seu segundo ano ali, tudo mudou. A pressão imposta pelo pai levou o irmão mais velho de Yohan a cometer suicídio. Agora, havia uma vaga aberta para o novo herdeiro do legado dos Jung... e Yohan foi o escolhido para preenchê-la.

Não negava que se sentia atraído pela arquitetura. Em parte, por um desejo de conectar-se com o pai distante, com a família à qual ele queria pertencer, com o irmão que sentia falta. Também porque havia arte naquilo. As catedrais alemãs sempre lhe encheram o coração de admiração. Então, Yohan aceitou, convencido de que faria tudo pela memória de seu irmão, ignorando a centelha de um anseio egoísta de agradar o pai.

Assim, aos 21 anos, retornou ao país natal que lhe era completamente estranho. Não demorou para iniciar suas aulas na Universidade Nacional de Seul, no curso de arquitetura. Sendo sempre perfeccionista e absurdamente dedicado a tudo que se propunha, não encontrou grandes dificuldades. Contudo, o estresse que os estudos lhe traziam e a pressão do pai, que já havia o colocado em diversos projetos na empresa, fizeram com que Yohan precisasse recorrer a soluções mais... imediatas.

Algumas pílulas o ajudavam a manter-se acordado e alerta quando a data final de um projeto ou de um trabalho começava a ameaçá-lo. Outras o acalmavam, entorpeciam e o ajudavam a finalmente dormir quando o sono passava a ser um desconhecido. Nessa rotina, pouco tempo lhe sobrava para deixar-se sentir.

Desde que havia se mudado para o país, morava em um apartamento pequeno perto da faculdade. Mas a arquitetura cinza dos prédios da cidade o deixavam ainda mais deprimido e, encontrando nisso a desculpa perfeita, convenceu o pai a comprar-lhe um apartamento mais afastado, onde poderia trabalhar com tranquilidade e segurança. Não contava para ele que, também, buscava distância do homem e de suas cobranças. Assim, conseguiu seu canto no Acropolis Complex.

2. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project

for current wips, i'm most excited about tsl and sitwyltme; they're both fairly plot-centric, so that'll give me a chance to exercise those muscles, and also, tsl is what i've been planning for literally nine months now, and more or less counts as a culmination of all of my ongoing research for the setting, while sitwyltme is personally cathartic. for future projects, i'm working on a fem!tiesanjiao pre-canon fic, which i'm very excited about, half comedy, half sincere exploration of character issues, and i have a fun little tdj concept knocking about my head, where post-explosion, yohan goes into a coma and his spirit anchors itself to gaon, so gaon has to carry out his plans while being pestered accompanied by his boss' spirit, and also occasionally being possessed about it.

7. What do you think are the characteristics of your personal writing style? Would others agree?

i think my writing characteristics are 1. being very verbose, and 2. realism. i really enjoy descriptive writing, and i have a hard time writing things not grounded in reality (in the sense of societal reactions/characterisation; i still write scif/supernatural/fantasy-esque settings, which aren't necessarily "realistic"). i personally like this about my writing, but i can fully imagine there's people out there that are ticked off by these tendencies of mine. "verbose" can easily be interpreted as "can't shut the fuck up" and "realism" isn't a far step from being seen as "pessimism".

10. How would you describe your writing process?

there's two processes, which often intertwine. the first is that i come up with a concept while busy with something, and then spend the next one to ten business days vibrating with a Need To Write until i manage to bang out the concept and toss it onto ao3. the other processes is coming up with a concept while talking to a friend, collaboratively losing our minds over it, helping me solidify my thoughts, and then i spend the next one to ten business days vibrating with the Need To Write until i finish it.

yeah my writing is on ao3 under the user OnyxSphinx (it's linked in my bio as well). sometimes i also toss half-finished, lapselock snippets of fics into my writing tag on here, but they're not really worth mentioning.

18. Do any of your stories have alternative versions? (plotlines that you abandoned, AUs of your own work, different characterisations?) Tell us about them.

uhhhhhh i'm trying to think. i think the only one i can remember is the gotham longfic i wrote ages ago. originally i had plans for it to be fairly complicated, but 1. i lost the drive to work on it, and 2. somehow i lost (never wrote down???) my notes for what exactly i wanted, so when i went back to it a couple years after i abandoned it to rework it, it wound up pretty different from the concepts that i could still manage to remember.

Lee Yohan é um jovem de beleza cativante, com feições delicadas que lembram fantasiosas nuvens de algodão doce. Desde muito novo ele se destacava por sua meiguice e bom coração, além de ser admirado por aqueles que cruzavam o seu caminho. Embora a timidez o acompanhasse seja lá para onde fosse, alguns diziam que era reconfortante estar ao seu lado.

Yohan passou a infância dividido entre Seul e uma das vilas em Jeju onde seus avós paternos moravam. Devido a essas mudanças frequentes, sua vida social era bastante limitada e ele tinha poucas oportunidades de fazer novas amizades. Essa situação dificultava sua adaptação em cada lugar que morava, mas sempre encontrava conforto na presença de sua família.

Porém, por trás do doce sorriso coreano, se escondia uma dor profunda. Sua infância foi marcada pelo abandono da matriarca, que deixou a família após inúmeras brigas e traições com o marido. Mas o pior estava por vir: quando Lee entrou na pré-adolescência, fugiu de casa em busca de sua mãe em Seul, apenas para descobrir que ela havia formado uma nova família com outro homem, e não só isso, tinha um bebê. Foi um choque ver a mulher que o trouxe ao mundo, tão parecida consigo e que um dia lhe disse amar tanto, seguir em frente com a vida sem olhar para trás, deixando-o abandonado.

Após retornar para casa com a autoestima abalada, como esperado, foi recebido pelo pai com um tapa no rosto e palavras estranhas de consolo depois de contar o que havia acontecido. Infelizmente, as coisas não melhoraram desde então. O patriarca mergulhou em uma espiral de depressão e alcoolismo devido aos últimos anos problemáticos vividos com sua agora ex-esposa, e quem mais sofreu as consequências foi o próprio filho que teve de lidar com um ambiente cada vez mais instável e tóxico.

Entre tantos conflitos, houve aquele que foi considerado o estopim para a já fragilizada situação do jovem. Além de possuir uma aparência semelhante à da mãe, o que parecia causar repulsa no pai, Yohan ainda foi pego beijando alguém do mesmo gênero. Para o homem, isso era uma grande desonra e uma prova da “falta de masculinidade” do filho, intensificando ainda mais os conflitos na relação entre eles.

Seu irmão mais velho, assim como ele, sofria com essa situação e um dia tomou a decisão de partir, deixando o menino sozinho e sem nenhum suporte emocional. Com apenas sua própria coragem e determinação, o menor dos Lee precisou encontrar forças dentro de si mesmo para poder continuar.

Conforme crescia, seus problemas diminuíram um pouco, exceto pelos comentários homofóbicos que o patriarca lançava ocasionalmente. O jovem que crescia aprendeu a lidar com essas situações, disfarçando a orientação sexual e romântica com pequenas mentiras indolores, ao seu ponto de vista. Embora não estivesse vivendo a vida que realmente almejava, ele acreditava que era preferível a ter que enfrentar um inferno diário dentro de casa.

Ainda que nem tudo fosse perfeito, nem tudo era sofrimento. Ele conseguiu se formar no Ensino Médio, mas ainda estava indeciso sobre qual carreira seguir, pois era um amante das artes e expressões, o que seria difícil em um ambiente tão conservador e repressivo como o de sua casa. Por isso, decidiu se alistar no serviço militar, onde se esforçou muito, apesar de não ter o mínimo de interesse naquilo. No entanto, teve que reprimir ainda mais seus desejos, já que, se descoberto, certamente seria visto como uma desonra e, na pior das hipóteses, expulso do exército. E a última coisa que queria era se afundar ainda mais naquele abismo.

A vida do coreano parecia monótona e sem escolhas próprias, como se estivesse preso em uma gaiola que se apertava cada vez mais. Ele sentia como se fosse um pássaro sem liberdade para bater suas asas. Mas algo dentro dele o inquietava e o motivava a buscar por uma vida mais significativa. Então, quando conheceu seu único amigo no exército, que o incentivou a morar no exterior com ele, Yohan viu uma oportunidade de escapar daquela vida limitada. Assim, agarrou essa chance e deixou para trás aquilo que o aprisionava, prontamente embarcando em uma nova aventura no exterior.

Durante os seis meses vividos nos Estados Unidos, experimentou uma agitação que nunca havia provado antes. Mesmo com a introspecção sendo sua fiel companheira, ele teve a oportunidade de socializar com pessoas incríveis e viver experiências libertadoras. Foi uma época de descobertas, em que ele pôde explorar sua paixão pela dança e desenvolver suas habilidades na área. Nem o idioma que poderia ter sido uma barreira, o limitou de aproveitar ao máximo em um país totalmente diferente do seu.

Por mais que o apreço da nova vida fosse realizado pela ambientação ocidental, não poderia viver ali para sempre, quiçá da maneira libertina. Decidido a tomar as rédeas do presente a partir de então, Lee retornou ao país de origem. Depois de encontrar um apartamento compartilhado em Yongsan, ele imediatamente procurou nightclubs e cursos de dança profissionalizantes, eventualmente, se reencontrando no “Hompa By Le Queen”. Para sua infelicidade, a boate acabou fechando, porém, não demorou para que encontrasse um emprego que o substituísse.

Após alguns anos longe, teve que voltar à vila de Jeju, onde tantas memórias dolorosas o atormentaram. O motivo era o estado de saúde de seu pai, e como sempre, o coração bondoso e empático do rapaz o levou a atender as necessidades do patriarca, já que seu irmão mais velho não dera notícias desde sua súbita partida. Para sua surpresa, ele foi recebido com um grande arrependimento: o patriarca Lee não apenas chorou ao vê-lo novamente, como também implorou por perdão pelos seus atos prejudiciais. Cedeu, após muito refletir, pois o peso da mágoa em seu coração havia desaparecido, permitindo desfrutar dos últimos meses de vida felizes com o seu progenitor.

Com a intenção de recomeçar, mais uma vez, acreditando estar liberto de todos os problemas dali, Yon partiu para um lugar novo e inexplorado, juntamente de seu amigo de infância Minjae, na ilha de Ulleung. Novas pessoas, novos lugares… Lá, ele experimentou coisas que jamais imaginou ter a chance de vivenciar, como encontrar um novo refúgio burlesco que se tornou seu segundo lar, onde nasceu Rosy, e enfrentar uma abordagem policial injusta que, com o tempo, acabou se tornando uma história engraçada para contar. Porém, o mais significativo de tudo foi que, ali, o Lee finalmente encontrou alguém especial que aqueceu seu coração há tanto tempo intocado. Tudo começou com uma chuva mágica de pétalas de hibisco, em um lugar que jamais imaginaria ser tão significativo em sua vida.

Foram quase dois anos experimentando uma linha tênue entre a calmaria e a agitação franco-coreana, até a chegada do mês de Maio de 2023. Após uma noite específica e apocalíptica em parceria com Conrad, Yohan viu-se forçado a se esconder devido às consequências de suas ações incitadas pelo estrangeiro. O que haviam feito foi de certa forma grave e o desespero maior ainda ao descobrir que poderia ser fichado pela polícia, dessa vez, de verdade, o apavorou. Com a proposta nipônica, o dançarino foi induzido a se mudar para Altalune, abandonando tudo o que havia construído na vila, incluindo amizades muito queridas, para começar uma nova fase, pela milésima vez, motivado, sobretudo, pelo medo de ser pego.

O encanto pelo arquipélago foi grandioso aos olhos do coreano que, assim que botou os pés em uma das ilhas, ao descobrir que talvez não tivesse o privilégio de atuar na área artística como dançarino, a sua paixão, se alarmou. Todavia, o destino parecia estar ao seu lado, e a vaga de instrutor de dança em um dos estabelecimentos mais falados de Cordelia surgiu como se caísse do céu.

Será que finalmente teria um final feliz como nos filmes do Studio Ghibli?
