No page break used… that’s the point. This isn’t even every school. It doesn’t take into account grocery stores, movie theaters, workplaces, public parks, malls, hair salons, bowling alleys, concerts, dance halls, nightclubs, yoga studios, places of worship, fucking “Independence” Day parades…. The list is endless. We are a sad, inept, violent nation incapable and unwilling to protect even our most vulnerable citizens.
Takes a long time to scroll thru the list and unless laws are changed, the list will get longer.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ "Jidenna Presents Debut Album at L.A.
"Jidenna: The Classic Man With a (Semi-Secret) Plan". "Jidenna: Why is US singer such a big deal in Nigeria?". "Jidenna's 'The Chief' Is a Genre-Hopping Debut Album".
^ Caramanica, Jon (February 15, 2017).
Ī chopped and screwed version of " Classic Man" featured in the Academy Award winning 2016 film Moonlight. Jidenna guest starred on Insecure in the episodes "Thirsty as Fuck," and "Shady as Fuck," which aired in November 2016. He performed "Long Live the Chief" and "Little Bit More" with a full band on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah in October 2016. Season 1 episode 5, "Just to Get a Rep", opens with Jidenna performing "Long Live the Chief" at the fictitious Harlem's Paradise. In September 2016, Jidenna was featured in an episode of the Netflix original series Luke Cage. Jidenna describes his look as "heavily inspired by the Harlem Renaissance with hints of traditional West African design," and a "marriage of European and African aesthetics." Jidenna currently resides in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. However, he would not adopt his signature dandy style until the death of his father in 2010. Over the years, the singer developed his personal style in college, where he learned about the power of fashion from his psychology professor Philip Zimbardo. Jidenna stated that his major influences include KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane, as well as the Nigerian Highlife music genre. In 2019 Jidenna released his second album, 85 to Africa. The lead singles "Sufi Woman" and "Tribe" were released on July 26, 2019, and will appear on his second studio album 85 to Africa. The album cover pays homage to Boz Scaggs' Middle Man album. On February 17, 2017, Jidenna released The Chief, his first studio album. In June 2016 he released the single "Chief Don't Run". The society, reminiscent of the social aid and pleasure clubs of New Orleans, is an international collective of entrepreneurs, activists, educators, scientists, and artists who host soirees, dinner parties, and demonstrations. Jidenna is a founding member of Fear & Fancy, a social club that began in California in 2006. Jidenna also received an award for best new artist at the 2015 Soul Train Music Awards in November. In June of the same year, Jidenna performed the song with Monáe at the BET Awards. His song "Classic Man" was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 58th Grammy Awards. On March 31, 2015, the second single from the EP was released – " Yoga" by Janelle Monáe and Jidenna. The song was in heavy rotation throughout the United States, and debuted at number 49 on Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. In February 2015, Jidenna released his first official single, called " Classic Man" featuring GianArthur. Beauty, Deep Cotton and Janelle Monáe herself, and then began recording a five-song compilation of its label's first extended play (EP), titled The Eephus. He has collaborated with a number of artists that are signed to this label including Roman GianArthur, St. Jidenna is signed to Janelle Monáe's Wondaland Records label and distributed through Epic Records. In 2008, after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity from Stanford University, he pursued his music career while working full-time as a teacher, moving between Los Angeles, Oakland, Brooklyn and Atlanta, before signing a deal with recording artist Janelle Monáe's Wondaland Records. Jidenna released his first album with Black Spadez as their final project at Milton Academy, where Jidenna graduated in 2003. In high school he became a co-founder of the rap group Black Spadez, and began producing, arranging and writing. In 1995, the family moved to Norwood, Massachusetts, and then to Milton, Massachusetts, in 2000. When Jidenna was six years old, the family moved back to the United States. Jidenna grew up partially in Nigeria, where his father was working as a professor of computer science at Enugu State University. Jidenna Theodore Mobisson was born on May 4, 1985, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, to Tama Mobisson, an accountant, and Oliver Mobisson, a Nigerian Igbo academic.

Los Angeles, CA
Los Angeles, CA, is known for people who value healthy living. A yoga studio is everywhere; so, if you move to LA, you'll probably change your unhealthy habits because of the environment that encourages you to live. This place is the home of the people that encourages something new and healthy. Their mindset is typical to the entire West Coast. People love to try and to talk about something new. I have a friend who was an immigrant to Los Angeles. She told me that she changed when she moved in because of the trend. In LA, it's a trend to try on anything new and go on anything healthy. When you move to this city, you'll be encouraged to live healthily.
Apartment Corp
If you're interested in Investment Visa & EB5 Program, Apartment Corp has broken down the simplified application process following the five steps. The first step is the initial meeting, followed by the pre-qualification with the attorney. The third is the application process that usually takes 60-90 days for the E2 visa and about 8 months to get an EB5 visa. The next step is the transfer of funds. The USCIS requires the transfer of funds in escrow before the visa approval. If unable to secure a visa, the fund will be refunded. The last step is establishing and guiding you to your new business. The business orientation consists of extensive training from the staff members and on how to manage and operate the business successfully. If you're interested in the investment Visa & EB5 program, call 323-456-2500.
California blackouts are Public Utilities Commission’s fault, grid operator says
California’s power grid operator delivered a blistering rebuke Monday to the state’s Public Utilities Commission, blaming the agency for rotating power outages — the first since the 2001 energy crisis — and warning of bigger blackouts to come. In their first public comments since the blackouts began Friday evening, officials at the California Independent System Operator described a “perfect storm” of conditions that caused demand to exceed available supply: scorching temperatures in California and across the western United States, diminished output from renewable sources and fossil-fueled power plants affected by the weather, and in some cases plants going offline unexpectedly when electricity was needed most. Read more here.
From the Los Angeles Times, I read that according to the operator, the California blackouts are the faults of the Public Utilities Commission. The power grid operator made a blistering rebuke to the Public utility Commission last Monday, blaming the agency for the power outrages. The official from the California Independent System Operator called the power outrage a perfect storm that caused the demand to exceed the supply. According to the official, the state could have been prepared if the agency ordered the companies to line up a sufficient power supply. Because of the high demand, there may be power interruptions to balance supply and demand.
Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, CA
Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, CA, is an excellent gateway to the cosmos. The visitors can explore the exhibits, enjoy the live shows, and be awe with the spectacular views of the Hollywood sign in LA. You can see anything around through the use of the telescope. Before the pandemic struck, we visited the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, CA, and we had a great day. There's a free WIFI service, and there are no-smoking areas. I like this because all forms of smoking, even e-cigarettes and vaping, are prohibited. If you're going to visit the observatory, make sure to check their website for information since the pandemic, some business hours are affected and closed.

Suzanne Doucet - New Age Box Set 1982-84 SNIPS (darkentriesrecords)
We are honored to release a 5-LP Vinyl Box Set from one of the key figures of New Age music, Suzanne Doucet from her incredible run of cassette only albums from 1982-84. Suzanne was born in Tuebingen, Germany where as a three year old, Doucet discovered her innate artistic gifts. Instinctively, she was always drawing, playing music, singing, and writing. By the age of 18, Suzanne was an established pop star in Germany with several #1 hits. She also made her mark as a composer, actress, TV moderator, director, engineer, and producer. At age 25. she took a sabbatical from the music business to go on a spiritual odyssey. In 1970 she released a triple album of field recordings and mind-expanding psychedelia under the name Zweistein. For the next ten years, she developed her own style of New Age music while exploring many areas of metaphysics and spiritual practices, including astrology, music therapy, tarot, yoga and the Kabbalah.
In 1979, Doucet launched a record label in West Germany named Isis, after the Egyptian goddess of feminine divinity. She formed the duo New Age with her musical partner Christian Bühner, and released the 1982 cassette album ‘Transformation’, which was inspired by a visit to Findhorn, Scottland. Suzanne and Christian recorded acoustic sounds such as waterdrops and vocals using sophisticated sound manipulation devices and muli-track recording techniques. The only electronic instruments used were the Jupiter 8 and the Roland TR-808 drum machine. The next year the duo began work on the follow-up ‘Transmission’, which released on cassette in 1983. After this release, Bühner and Doucet moved to Los Angeles, hoping to find more kindred spirits in the burgeoning New Age scene there. Doucet met Tajalli (William Wichman) whom with she would collaborate with on the 1984 cassette ‘Brilliance’. That same year Doucet married Video Artist and Yoga instructor James Bell. Together they recorded two albums, ‘Reflecting Light Vol. 1’ and ‘Reflecting Light Vol. 2’, using a Roland JX-3P, TR-909 and a Steinway Grand Piano. Both cassettes had mirrored covers, a reference to the Zweistein jacket 14 years prior.
For the first time Suzanne’s cassette music is available on vinyl, in a limited run of 300 box sets. Each is stamped with a rainbow foil of the goddess Isis and includes an 8-page full color magazine designed by Eloise Leigh with liner notes, photos and reflections by Suzanne. We also have a small amount of stand alone albums available housed in jackets using the original cassette artwork. All albums have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Doucet's career placed her at the forefront of blossoming New Age Music movement. "People all over the world become more and more inner directed", she says, "New Age Music is the music of the new millennium. We are all pioneers, our work is on the vibrational level, which is the essence of all being. Our inner environment and the outer environment are co-dependent. This is the reason why music is so important for our lives. Whatever I can do to bring consciousness expanding music to as many people as possible, I'll do... and I'll devote my total being to whatever I am doing!"

#charlestonhomes #homerenovation Life is a constant renovation! Some of you may not know that I was a very successful Realtor in Central Florida for many years! In fact, I hung my license with Coldwell Banker in Winter Park, and it’s what enabled me to eventually open up my yoga studios. My passion for all things real estate actually started while living in Los Angeles, California. I was looking to purchase a condo in West Hollywood right before the 9-11 attack. Fast forward through a series of some life changing events, I was able to help 100’s of buyers and sellers successfully fulfill their real estate dreams. Personally I enjoyed buying and renovating homes, as well as investing & managing my own rentals. It was my real estate career that afforded me the ability to open my yoga studios, which led to traveling the world to lead yoga trainings. So now 15 years later, I am married, yoga studios sold, and I find myself coming full circle with real estate in Charleston, South Carolina. Nate and I are renovating our own home on James Island, of course l am still teaching tons of yoga, AND excited to now hang my SC real estate license with @iop_residential … So if you are thinking of buying or selling a home in the Charleston area, or know someone that is… don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] I am looking forward to creating new real estate adventures in Charleston! #tymihoward #charlestonrealtor #charlestonrealestate #manifestmiracles #benderhomes #bendertribe #jamesislandsc #homerenovations (at Charleston, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZNVVQyl5bK/?utm_medium=tumblr

Beyer Blinder Belle Announce Groundbreaking of Gallery 64, Mixed-Use Multifamily Development And Future Home of Rubell Museum on Historic Site
The renovation, adaptive reuse, and redevelopment of the historic, former Randall Junior High School and site will create a vibrant arts campus with a contemporary art museum and Gallery 64, a new 12-story apartment building.

September 21, 2021 (Washington, DC) — Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners (BBB) announce the design and groundbreaking of Gallery 64, a new 12-story residential building providing 492 units of housing. Gallery 64 will anchor the renovation and redevelopment of the historic 2.7-acre Randall Junior High School site located at 65 Eye Street, SW, in Washington, DC, with the existing former school buildings transformed into the Rubell Museum DC, a world-class contemporary art museum. National real estate firm Lowe is the developer along with joint venture partner on the project, Mitsui Fudosan America.
Constructed in 1906, with two significant wings added in 1927, the Randall Junior High School historically served African American public-school students in southwest Washington, DC until its closing in 1978. The Rubell Museum will fill the central building and east wing of the school buildings which will be preserved and repurposed, presenting internationally renowned contemporary paintings, sculptures, photography, and installations.
A dynamic glass addition at the east wing will create an inviting museum entry, with a bookstore, café, and an outdoor dining terrace that enriches street activity along Eye Street. The West Randall building will provide approximately 18,000 SF of creative workspace aimed at variety of potential tenants including nonprofits, cultural institutions, technology incubators, and coworking businesses. The concept design for the redevelopment of the historic Randall School has received unanimous approval from the Historic Preservation Review Board and from the Advisory Neighborhood Commission. With Gallery 64 sited north of the historic buildings, the redevelopment will result in over 500,000 SF of usable space.
rendering courtesy Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners
Gallery 64’s apartment residences are configured as studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units of which 98 are designated affordable. Nineteen two-level, townhouse-style residences activate the street with increased pedestrian connectivity and visual interest. Amenities include rooftop gathering spaces with fire pits, grilling stations, and outdoor kitchens; a dog walk; and a resort-style pool. Indoor communal areas include a spacious lounge with fireplace, game room, fitness center, a maker space, and a sound studio.
Gallery 64 is designed to LEED Gold standards, and the renovation of the historic school buildings will comply with LEED Silver guidelines. Gallery 64 and the overall campus redevelopment are anticipated to be completed by year-end 2022. Project visuals can be accessed here.
The 20-story infill residential tower includes ground-floor and cellar retail space, 121 rental units on the second through twentieth floors, and amenities including a landscaped rooftop terrace, private rear yard terraces, fitness and yoga rooms, resident lounge space, children’s playroom, general and bicycle storage, communal laundry, and pet wash. Located within the Borough Hall Skyscraper Historic District, the development was approved by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The project’s foundation was completed in March, and the superstructure was completed in late summer 2021.
The unit interiors will boast a clean modern palette with oversized windows. The building’s distinctive design pays subtle homage to the area’s historic architecture with its verticality, rhythmic dark facade, including a polished black granite base, profiled Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) piers, bronze-tone metal detailing and charcoal-grey colored window frames.

Наслов: Meet the Customers We’re Featuring at the WordPress.com Growth Summit, Линк: https://ift.tt/37OVlug , Садржај:
Last summer, as the world adjusted to pandemic life, Jessica Petrie knew that she had to make changes to how she ran her studio, Yoga Next Door.
She quickly figured out how to stream her classes from her studio in the beautiful woods of Maine, and adapted her business model to offer video learning and online payment. While looking forward to a return to in-real-life classes and retreats, she refused to be set back by the pandemic, and found a way to allow her students to continue their yoga practice from the safety of their homes.
We are always learning from customers like Jessica — or Steven Gaither, Wali Pitt, and Tolly Carr of HBCU Gameday. The trio doubled down on understanding their growing audience, while staying focused on their important coverage of sports and culture at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Their expert use of SEO tools has helped them increase site traffic along the way.
They are not alone: many WordPress.com creators have grown their audiences while publishing on social and cultural movements around the world, signaling their resilience, adaptability, and impact in challenging times.
We are proud to feature Jessica Petrie, HBCU Gameday, and other inspiring customers at the second Official WordPress.com Growth Summit, on Tuesday, August 17 (Wednesday, August 18, for Asia-Pacific timezones). You can still buy your ticket and learn from these incredible customers:
Muslim Girl
Amani al-Khatahtbeh started a website, Muslim Girl, and a movement. Whether highlighting prominent Muslim women in the Olympics or in the media, or diving into issues like human trafficking and marriage in modern Islam culture, Amani has created a platform focused on raising awareness, amplifying young voices, and fostering open dialogue. Beyond this, Amani is building a community around the diverse identities of Muslim women in the West — on #MuslimWomensDay (heading into its sixth year next March) and every day.
CalMatters
CEO Neil Chase and VP of Product Strategy Kim Fox will talk about their nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom, CalMatters, with our own Kinsey Wilson, the head of Newspack (the open-source publishing and revenue-generating platform for news organizations.) CalMatters not only covers policy and politics in California; they also help empower emerging publishers with their digital platforms. We’ll learn how they started, how they sustain their operation, and what they see ahead in digital news.
Zaloa Languages
Anja Spilker is the founder of Mexico-based company Zaloa Languages, which offers online language learning with native teachers to an international audience. Anja is that rare and powerful combination of founder, CEO, and influencer. She’s equally adept at sharing her life behind the scenes as she is in shifting her business model, significantly increasing revenue, and creating a compelling brand with a sophisticated ecommerce approach. Listening to her tell the story of Zaloa Languages will be a masterclass on its own.
HBCU Gameday
With HBCU Gameday, Steven J. Gaither spotted an underrepresented niche in the vast sports media landscape. He teamed up with experienced journalist Tolly Carr and digital technologist and video producer Wali Pitt to create a publication with an important focus on HBCU sports stories of culture and substance.  They’re hands-on in understanding how their audience finds them, all while adopting new formats (video!) seamlessly.
Workprint
David Nitzche is a master of short-form storytelling, and he’s making a business out of it. We’ll learn how he weaves trailers, music videos, and creative for Apple, Marvel, National Geographic, Red Bull, Netflix, Google, and more. David will also talk about how he’s evolved his career from freelance editor to launching his own post-production studio, Workprint, in Los Angeles in the middle of the pandemic.
Yoga Next Door
If the story of how Jessica borrowed her son’s GoPro camera to quickly experiment with offering her classes by online video doesn’t inspire you, Yoga Next Door’s return to real-life retreats will. But you just may learn most from Jessica’s  on-the-fly business savvy, including how she set up a digital library for customers while continuing to share her mindfulness and yoga expertise willingly. (So willingly that she’ll offer attendees a mid-Summit yoga and mindfulness session.)
STATURE
Which of Nick Engvall’s ventures can you learn most from? We found him via Sneaker History, the podcast he launched with and for fellow sneakerheads, drawing on his own content-creating background with brands like StockX and Finish Line. But we’ll also explore his creative agency STATURE, his hands-on thought leadership for podcasters and creators, his advocacy of WordPress, and how he finds time for it all!
If we have time, that is. Because all of these speakers have many stories to tell and ideas to share, and we have a packed Summit agenda that also includes sessions with our own talented Happiness Engineers, who will lead workshops on blogging, podcasting, building an audience, and SEO.
We hope you’ll join us at the Summit this week — and just as importantly, we hope you’ll keep working on your thing, too. We’d love to feature you someday soon.

Kelly Marie Tran thought she'd quit acting — then The Last Jedi put her dream into hyperdrive
— Entertainment Weekly
Tumblr media
You have this dream. You want to be an actor. But that possibility seems far, far away. You have talent, but zero connections. You love movies, and TV, and comedy. They’re a part of you. So you want to be a part of them.
You go for it.
You leave everything you know and move to where they craft movies and TV. To make ends meet, you take jobs you wouldn’t mind losing if a better gig comes along. Years go by. You book a few small roles. But you’re tired. And you’re worried. It’s not happening.
Then one day, after all that grueling work, a miracle happens. You get your break.
It’s big one. Almost too much to believe.
You get the lead in a Star Wars movie.
It happened for Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Hayden Christensen, and Daisy Ridley. With The Last Jedi, it has happened again for Kelly Marie Tran.
The 28-year-old San Diego native landed the role of Rose Tico, a problem-solving Resistance mechanic, just about a year after she was ready to give up chasing that dream forever.
“There was absolutely a moment,” Tran tells EW. “When I turned 25, I had been at it for some years and I was struggling to pay my bills. I was tired. I had been working [my day job] 40-plus hours a week, plus sometimes I’d have two auditions in the day and then I would write a sketch or do improv at night, or rehearse for the next auditions the next day. So, my days, I would get up at 5 a.m. and then I wouldn’t be home until 11:00 p.m. The days were like that for years.”
“I remember thinking, ‘This could be my life forever,’” she says. “Like, I could just never make it. I could work this hard for the next 20 years of my life and still be struggling.”
This was her twin suns moment. Think of Luke Skywalker standing in the Tatooine desert and staring off at something much bigger and more wondrous than anything else he knows.
There may be struggle ahead. But also great adventure.
Do or do not, there is no ‘try.’
Tran definitely heeded the wise words of Yoda.
“There are so few times in life where you are passionate about anything,” she says. “And I think that if you can find that, you should just hold on to it and protect it at all costs and just follow it, because it’s so rare.”
During her years in Los Angeles, Tran trained at the improv groups iO West, Second City, and Upright Citizens Brigade, and did guest spots on shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live! while writing and starring in digital shorts. Her biggest hit was the 2013 web series Ladies Like Us, an awkward-fest about a group off oddball friends in an epic struggle against everyday life.
Auditioning for Star Wars felt like a longshot. But the first round went well, then the second. Then came a long run of callbacks. The more real it became, the more unreal it seemed.
Tryouts don’t pay the rent, however. During this time, she was punching a clock for a company called Syndicatebleu, a temp agency and recruitment firm.
“I worked in an office. I was like an assistant. So, I would just answer phone calls, coordinate events,” Tran says. “It was a great day job. I worked with amazing people, but obviously whenever you are doing something that’s not your dream, you kind of feel like, ‘Oh, I’m on this grind.’”
Finally, writer-director Rian Johnson scheduled another meet-up, right in the middle of her regular 9 to 5.
Undercover Operative
In her first official Star Wars performance, she had to keep playing the role of Kelly Marie Tran, office assistant.
“The day I found out, Rian was like, ‘Oh we want you in this movie,’ I had just left work on my lunch break to go to this meeting,” she recalls. “Afterward, he told me that I couldn’t tell anyone, so I went back to work and answered phones and answered emails, like nothing happened. It was the most bizarre experience. Inside I was like, Ugh! Crazy!”
Then came the announcement. Then came the production. Then came a whole cascade of happy-happy, joy-joy that struggling actors are unaccustomed to dealing with. “I still just sort of live my life the way that I was before,” she says. “I don’t know when I will feel that it’s different. Definitely, when I saw the action figures, I was like, ‘This is insane,’ but it still hasn’t sunk in or registered on me.”
One thing that has registered for this daughter of Vietnamese immigrants is the significance of being the first Asian-American woman to land a lead a Star Wars movie. “Growing up I watched a lot of [pop culture] and didn’t really get to see a lot of people that looked like me,” she says. “I think that I’m really lucky to be this person, and I get to be part of this franchise. I hope that it is a move in a better direction.”
Despite being a Star Wars hero, she can’t shake this stubborn feeling she’s being punked.
“I still don’t really believe it’s real,” Tran says. “Like when I’m driving past the place I used to work, or when I’m driving past the comedy studio where I used to take photos in exchange for classes, or when I’m driving past the yoga studio I used to clean on the weekends. It’s not that far removed from me yet. I get very sentimental over things like that.”
That’s the bizarre thing about dreams. When they come true, you can still feel like you’re dreaming.

Are Fitness Buffs Going Back to the Gym? – The New York Times
Tumblr media
The 5:30 a.m. alarm to hit the spin class. The interminable waits for the ab-crunch machine. The masses of sweating bodies huffing and puffing just feet away, followed by the hurried shower and the wet-haired hustle to the office before the boss arrives.
America’s gym habit always involved its share of hassle and expense. And then came the pandemic.
So what now? As the world reopens — or at least, we hope it does — a wounded health club industry is banking on pent-up demand to drive a gym renaissance. Will this happen? Or will workout warriors, after a year exploring virtual and outdoor alternatives, come to see their old gyms as fitness anachronisms, like a Richard Simmons “Disco Sweat” workout VHS from the Clinton years?
Consider Henry Lihn, 40, a tech entrepreneur in Manhattan. Before the pandemic, he would hit an Equinox gym in SoHo or Greenwich Village at least four mornings a week to lift weights, box or do yoga.
He wouldn’t dream of it now. “The gym is a raging dumpster fire of Covid bacteria and hamster wheels,” Mr. Lihn said. “I’m never going back.”
Instead, Mr. Lihn has adopted a socially-distanced outdoor regimen: he bikes the West Side Highway twice a day, plays tennis on public courts in Brooklyn, and does chin-ups on walk-signal cross bars. The wind in his face, the sun on his cheeks, he is hooked. A few weeks ago, he canceled his gym membership.
The uncertainties around the Delta variant have not encouraged some former group exercisers. “I have zero interest in going back to the yoga studio,” said Heidi Kim, 33, a tech consultant in Los Angeles, which recently reinstated mandatory masks for indoor public spaces. “Of the many things I want to do indoors, sweating with strangers is not high on the list.”
Instead Ms. Kim now stays in shape with outdoor distance runs and muscle toning courses on the fitness site, the Sculpt Society.
Others have come to believe that they no longer need to pay as much as $200 or higher per month to exercise when they could invest in a few pieces of home equipment and get the same results.
“Working out at home with Beachbody on Demand and free workouts from Instagram influencers have worked really well for me,” said Danielle DeBoe Harper, 44, a creative director for a home fixtures company in Cleveland. “So for now, at least, my budget priorities no longer include a line item for a gym membership.”
Plus, there is the added convenience of not having to spend time traveling back and forth to the gym, changing into workout clothes and then showering — which can take as much time as the workout itself.
Others have found that the sense of community and socializing they found in a fitness club can be easily replicated outside it.
After his Equinox branch closed, Harry Santa-Olalla, 34, an auctioneer who lives in the Dumbo neighborhood of Brooklyn, formed a fitness pod last summer to sweat through hill sprints and burpees with a few friends, including the “Games of Thrones” actor Kit Harington.
Working out in this tight-knit crew, they were able to motivate each other and help keep each other grounded in a difficult time.“Two more guys joined today,” Mr. Santa-Olalla said. “They’re coming along to a barbecue I’m hosting tomorrow on my roof. That would have never happened in a gym.”
That sense of camaraderie can also be found at home, with group spinning classes on Peloton and personal trainers on Zoom.
“From the first day I owned the Peloton, I rode every day for 4 months straight,” said Amy Lin, 32, an elementary schoolteacher in Calgary, Alberta, who ditched her pricey gym and personal trainer for a Peloton group called Lonely Bikes Club.
In a year filled with isolation, fear and, in her case, grief (her husband died last year of a non-Covid related illness), her new routine gave her a sense of belonging. “Because of this fancy bike that goes nowhere,” Ms. Lin said, “I have somehow kept going on.”
Another pandemic fitness hack — the Zoom personal trainer — has retained its appeal, even after gyms reopened. “People love it,” said Michael Gabryszewski, 26, a personal trainer in Rhinebeck, N.Y. “It eliminates the commute, which is a big barrier to fitness. So instead of doing one session a week, you can do four or five, because it doesn’t take too much time out of your schedule.”
Virtual gyms and trainers appear to have staying power. According to a recent McKinsey & Company survey, 70 percent of people who used online fitness programs during the pandemic plan to stick with them long-term.
Gearing Back Up
All of this may seem ominous for the future of gyms, which have been a fixture in American culture at least since John Travolta was wearing short shorts and grinding in aerobics classes in the 1983 movie, “Perfect.”
Some 22 percent of the nation’s fitness facilities closed permanently during the pandemic, according to IHRSA, the Global Health & Fitness Association, with 1.5 million industry employees losing their jobs since the beginning of the pandemic.
“Being shut down for six months was clearly a very dark time,” said Todd Magazine, the chief executive of Blink Fitness, a national chain of affordable health clubs that endured furloughs and layoffs. “We’re predominantly a brick and mortar business.”
But there are reasons for optimism, too. Plenty of Lycra-clad sweat obsessives seem to be hearing the siren call of the StairMaster once again.
As Covid restrictions have eased in some regions, gym traffic is back to more than 80 percent of the pre-lockdown levels of January 2020, according to a recent survey by Jefferies, the financial services company (it’s worth noting that gym membership reached record levels in 2019, according to the IHRSA).
A rebound is evident at Blink Fitness, where sign-ups last month, normally slow season for gyms, equaled those of January 2020, usually a frenzied month for gym-goers trying to make good on New Year’s resolutions, according to the company.
Gold’s Gym International, which filed for bankruptcy in 2020, was recently acquired by RSG Group, a German fitness company, for $100 million. The 24 Hour Fitness chain, which closed 100 clubs and filed for Chapter 11, emerged from bankruptcy last December following a restructuring.
Business is booming at some smaller gyms, as well. “Our numbers were stronger this past quarter than they ever were,” said Jenny Liu, the president of Dogpound, a high-end boutique gym focused on one-on-one training with locations in TriBeCa and West Hollywood.
For some fitness freaks, there is a larger reason to return to a gym: it’s the kind of thing people didn’t even used to think about doing before the pandemic.
This past July, Sarah Goldsmith, 36, a communications associate for a public affairs firm in Washington D.C., returned to her rigorous pre-Covid gym routine: almost every day, usually starting around 5:15 a.m.
“I’ve been sore almost every day since,” Ms. Goldsmith said. “For me, that is a big part of feeling normal again.”

Venice V Hotel commemorates regional art, browse and skate culture
By Kamala Kirk
Proper Hospitality just recently revealed the opening of Venice V Hotel in Los Angeles’ renowned Venice Beach Community.
Venice V Hotel is a brand-new shop home from Proper Hospitality that just recently opened its doors in Venice Beach. Proper Hospitality styles, brand names and runs high-end way of life hospitality experiences under its Proper, Avalon, and Hotel June brand names. Led by the visionaries behind The Kor Group, the business handles Proper branded hotels in Santa Monica, San Francisco and Austin, to name a few.
“Venice V is an irreplaceable landmark on legendary Venice Beach,” stated Brian De Lowe, co-founder and president of Proper Hospitality. “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with the Lambert family to bring their lifelong vision to reality. As we continue to expand the Proper and Hotel June brands, Venice V Hotel represents a growing part of Proper Hospitality’s business – the management of inspiring independent, third-party owned hotels that have a shared ethos with the other properties in our portfolio.”
Envisioned as a meeting place for the imaginative wanderer these days, Venice V Hotel draws its motivation from the city’s famous skate park, browse scene and unequaled culture for a genuine regional experience. Located off Westminster Avenue on the Venice Beach Boardwalk, the beachfront home is embeded in a 1915 landmark structure that was formerly called The Waldorf, which was a previous home to Hollywood icons such as Charlie Chaplin and Clara Bow.
“The present-day Venice V embraces the building’s historic foundation, with a dedication to preserving many of its special original period details including exposed interior riveted steel beams, a central grand staircase, and a carefully restored elevator with etched bronze doors, mahogany and brass interior,” stated hotel supervisor Leah Edwards. “Unique details are around every corner, from the curated local art in every guest room to the striking lobby mural of Venice visionary Abbot Kinney, constructed entirely of more than 4,000 skateboard wheels.”
Proper Hospitality worked carefully with regional style and architecture partner, Relativity Architects, to bring the vision for Venice V to life. Each of the hotel’s spaces, suites, penthouses and roof cottages provide stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The ocean view and ocean front cottages have personal entryways, domestic conveniences and sensational Venice Beach and Boardwalk views.
No 2 spaces are alike, and all of the spaces include exposed brick from the initial structure and the reconditioned elevator is the earliest West of the Mississippi. Modern touches consist of custom-made LED lighting and flatscreens offering Apple TELEVISION. The previous basement theater has actually been changed into a versatile tech-friendly area for group conferences, personal screenings and celebratory events.
“The V is a nod to the eclectic range of the Venice story, with no two rooms, suites or spacious bungalows alike,” Edwards stated. “Three distinct, design-driven room themes offer interiors inspired by beach bohemians; cozy, creativity-inducing artist studios; and skate/surf culture. The spacious rooms and suites range from 200 to 560 square feet and feature stunning Pacific Ocean views, open floor plans, hardwood floors and walk-in showers. In every space, original details from the historic building were preserved while weaving in elevated touches like oversized noise-canceling windows, platform beds, imported linens and Aesop bath amenities.”
The hotel is likewise pet-friendly and its diverse shows consists of beach yoga and running groups, browse and skate lessons, curated picnics, assisted bike and art mural trips, and more. Offerings display Proper Hospitality’s dedication to offer visitors and residents with improving experiences, commemorating and engaging with the culture of the surrounding area.
“We have partnered with Great White Venice to offer an in-room dining experience for our guests,” Edwards stated. “In your room you will see a card with the Great White logo and on the back there is a QR code that will take you to their app/menu. We are also walking distance to a multitude of dining options on Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Main Street and the surrounding Venice Boardwalk area.”
For those looking for health and relaxation throughout their stay, Venice V Hotel provides in-room medical spa services offered by Soothe, a popular mobile health company. The hotel is likewise presently using complimentary yoga on the beach at 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays, and beach cruisers and skateboards are offered for visitors to utilize.
“The Venice V is in the heart of Venice, located right on the iconic boardwalk where you experience all walks of life and spectacular views of the Pacific,” Edwards stated. “We are also very cognizant that were are a reflection of our city and want to give back as much as possible. Our Dogtown rooms display skateboards from the Garage Board Shop, an organization based in LA that focuses on education-based programs for at-risk youth, with part of the proceeds going directly back to the organization. 10% or our pet fee is donated to the Best Friends Animal Society; and Proper Hospitality’s charitable initiative, Proper Giving, has turned its focus toward helping to bring support, resources and energy toward lowering rates of homelessness in our Proper cities.”
