Hey Lazy, I’ve been struggling with self love/acceptance lately. I give myself a hard time for being overweight, for overeating, for spending time on mindless entertainment, for not getting to bed at at night and up in the morning when I “should,” tor not spending more time on formal spiritual practice and study. My heroes are Mister Rogers and Thich Nhat Hanh. I know being this hard on myself isn’t good for me. So why can’t I stop, and for that matter HOW?
Focus on how you feel. Shift attention from your mind to the feeling of your body.
Being overweight, over eating, enjoying mindless entertainment, going to bed late and waking late, all of this is fine if you have a clear head and heart and feel like a million bucks. But I suspect you don’t feel so good and that’s why you are asking how to change it all.
Judging yourself doesn’t improve how you are feeling. It adds to the feelings of dis-ease. And it makes it even harder to change your ways because such negative self-judgment is discouraging.
For example, I was going for a 40 minute run daily up until a few weeks ago. I got so busy that I have only had the chance to run a couple of times and even then I couldn’t manage a full 40 minutes.
But today since I finally have time, I’m going to go for a run. And if my body allows it, I’ll go for 40 minutes. But if I have to stop at 20 or 30 minutes that is fine.
Where is my motivation coming from? If I were priding myself on being active and running daily then I might be discouraged that I’ve done so little running. If I were proud of how long I could run before, I might feel negative about having to run for shorter times. Or maybe I was happy with some physical appearance changes my body went through and now I’m back to square one.
None of that matters. I run because I pay attention to how my body feels. After I run, I feel fantastic for the next 24 hours. And over time, it has great health benefits. But just feeling good, sweating it out and gulping some fresh water, and using my energy just to replenish it again, all of these are things for which my body feels grateful.
So when it comes to changing your lifestyle, it can’t happen by thinking. It happens by feeling.
Feel your body—how is your energy, how is your baseline mood, how do you feel after you over eat? Feel your mind—is there clarity, is there inspiration, is there curiosity and creativity?
Remember that changing your lifestyle is about what you do every day. It doesn’t matter so much how amazing those things are—meditating for five minutes or five hours daily. So long as it is daily, it is a part of you.
So start small, like planting seeds. I’ve gotten to know you pretty well over the years and so I know your path and practice are the real deal. You will find that throughout life there are plateaus and places in which you will get stuck. You will also discover the methods that will break you out of those stagnations.
Here are my recommendations:
Do some daily cardio. In my experience at least, cardio results in elevated mood and mental clarity beginning from day one. I was surprised when I found this to be better than weight training and even yoga in that respect.
Sit for a daily five minute meditation. After that, feel free to meditate for longer or do other practices. But always do the five minutes. Because you have had an established practice before, five minutes may seem like peanuts and you may try longer like a half hour. But then tomorrow you may not feel like doing a half hour and then doing five minutes might feel disappointing by comparison. So just hold yourself accountable for five minutes daily and count anything on top of that as bonus.
Make simple diet changes. I am not a dietician or a nutritionist. Despite being a doctor, I can’t tell you what the perfect diet is and everyone is also different. Try drinking more water and less sodas if that’s what you’ve been doing. Try reducing the portions of your meals or reducing the snacks. I know some people who swear by intermittent fasting. Or keep the same volume but introduce more non-processed foods. Whole veggies and such instead of things that have been creamed, puréed, baked, etc.
Wake up earlier. If you start waking up earlier, you’ll be wanting to go to bed earlier. You can’t get out of bed by thinking. You won’t be able to convince yourself either. When your alarm goes off, don’t ask yourself if you feel like getting out of bed. Leap out of bed before you can start resisting. And whatever you do, do not reach for your phone. No phones allowed while in bed.
I understand that some of these suggestions are harder to follow through with than others. But think of this like standing next to an ice cold swimming pool on a summer day. You dip a toe in and it feels so cold and there is an intense inner resistance to jumping in. The longer you linger at the edge, the more resistance builds up inside you. In the end, you can’t think your way into jumping in. You have to toss all of your thoughts aside and just fucking leap.
