to nobody's surprise, tgcf is maybe my favorite of the three series. and like. so many good things. i love xie lian and all of his beautiful bullshit. but like. g-d damn it (pun intended) the conversation about devotion and what it can mean/manifest as. xie lian circa age 17's devotion is respect and joy. hua cheng's devotion is persistence and love. qi rong's devotion is obsession and self-justification. xie lian's two retainers (forgot names. mu and feng?)'s devotion, to begin with, is their literal job (altho there's obv more to it). the heavens treat devotion like currency. the people treat devotion as subservience, but also, importantly, as an exchange. the way devotion can change depending on the extent and nature of what the devotee expects to get in exchange for their devotion. hua cheng and qi rong are foils in exactly this way- qi rong expects xie lian will do what he wants if he is devoted, while hua cheng wants xie lian's attention, but does not demand payment for his devotion. the fucking half-eaten steamed bun, yall.

elaboration below bc i have thoughts.

qi rong believes he is justified committing violence in xie lian's name because he assumes, if he thinks it's fine, so will xie lian. qi rong is devoted because, with xie lian on his side, he has power and safety from retribution. he gives xie lian devotion, xie lian gives him subservience. hua cheng believes he is justified in committing violence in xie lian's name with no regard to xie lian's judgement on the matter. he honestly probably assumes xie lian won't be ok with it half the time. hua cheng is devoted because... well. i dont know yet? but from what i can tell, 2 books in, the point of hua cheng's devotion is entirely based around xie lian's happiness and well being. hua cheng is selfish, for sure, and he wants xie lian's attention and love. but he wants to give just as much as he wants. hua cheng gives him subservience, xie lian gives him devotion.

qi rong and hua cheng both want xie lian to act a certain way. but... taking inspiration from someone else's words on this site, qi rong treats xie lian like a pet, and hua cheng treats him like treasured wildlife. alternately, qi rong wants xie lian to give him everything, hua cheng wants xie lian to keep living and give him everything he's willing to give. and that's why we like hua cheng, and qi rong is creepy and annoying.

Hi. Here is my atrocity. Plus some very unneeded detailing without the actual detail.

Baptisia, on the right, symbolizes protection and is a butterfly host plant (butterfly amulet reference kind of). Violet, on the left, symbolizes faithfulness and modesty. Sunflower seeds, at the bottom, symbolizes good luck and loyalty. Specifically in the seed form since Xiao is kind of going incognito. The Qingxin flower is just there as a nod to your writing unless my memory failed me again, in which case I'll just put it as a nod to his character detail. Also I am not a digital artist so it looks terrible and the composition is like that because I thought of the flowers after I drew Finch! Xiao and could not be bothered to redraw him so I dotted them around him. How do I know I'm not great at drawing? I spent 11 hours on this very simple concept and managed to add very little detail.

sometimes I randomly think about the time a girl posted in this girls only Facebook group I’m in telling everyone how she broke up with her boyfriend and he lied saying that he lost the spare key she gave him, only to then break into her apartment when she wasn’t home and steal the cat they’d adopted while they were together, but then he denied having done this and she didn’t really have proof that he took the cat since he wouldn’t let her come into his place and look for it. And then another girl saw this post and knew her ex-boyfriend, and she was like “girl. I used to hook up with your mans back in xxxx and I still have his number. If you want, I’ll hit him up and get him to invite me back to his place and see if your cat’s there.” And the OP was like “bet.”

So this woman hit up homie dog, asked him out for drinks, went home with him, slept with him, and then woke up in the middle of the night and TOOK THE CAT. Like she had only said that she would confirm if the cat was there but then she took it upon herself to steal this woman’s cat back. Like she full on Trojan horsed this man and then hit up homegirl like “I got the goods. Where you wanna meet.” And then the two of them posted a photo of them together with the cat to the group.

And I just think women supporting women is so beautiful.
