So admittedly in regards to fics, I stay within my little niche (I’m never made happy by going in the main tags anywhere), so I’m not ~super~ familiar with fanfic trends in this fandom apart from the numbers

Ooh though I can answer in regards to a trend I’ve seen with Caitlin/Cisco fics, since I used to be a pretty strong fan of the ship (and I also mentioned this in the notes of your amazing post where you touch on this):

The way they treat Kamilla is…interesting, and I don’t mean that as a compliment. There’s this general tendency to write her as second-best, as a stepping stone, as a “boring”, “nice” girlfriend who Cisco deserves better than. And that sits so poorly with me. Just because she’s not a meta doesn’t make her boring! And Cisco loves her so, so much! Sure, their writing isn’t perfect, and there are things I would love to flesh out more when I get to writing them in the Morgan AU (because yes, by the way, Kamisco will be endgame there), but…idk.

What really gets me is one fic in which Caitlin said “you deserve better than nice” to Cisco about Kamilla, and then at the end of the fic, Cisco ends up with Caitlin. Like…it feels icky yk? It almost reads of s1 Barry behavior towards Westhawne, and I just…ugh. Extra icky that Kamilla is Asian and Caitlin is white.

(Those two things weren’t the author’s intention, by the way - they do genuinely like Kamilla and have talked about her in a way that does support that. But I question how much if they can have a character say such a thing about her and then have Cisco rush into the arms of the person who said that)

And mind you…I like Caitlin/Cisco! I liked it from the start, and I’m still fond of it (I still have fics of them in my bookmarks because they warm my heart when I think of them). But I don’t interact with the fandom anymore because of shenanigans like this…and I’m not gonna lie, it sucked some of the joy out of the ship in general for me. I only like it in small doses nowadays, and never in a context where Cisco has already met Kamilla.

Omg I saw your moon dominance post and I have to share something 😭

I have a friend whom I went to the same school as, we still talk sometimes but not as much.

She has always been quite a charismatic person, and is a relatively small built, conventionally attractive blonde white girl. Needless to say she is considered quite “soft and feminine” - I only mention race because racism would naturally prevent her being perceived that way.

She also had a similar public outrage at me after I asked her if she brought her present in for the Secret Santa, and she responded by kicking me in the shins and going on a tangent about how her life is really stressful and how I only worry about “school and sleep” 💀

However the interesting part that I vaguely covered at the beginning is that she had mastered the whole sweet innocent teenage facade. She had people, primarily older men in authority, entirely wrapped around her finger. She developed this oddly close relationship relationship with one of our teachers, which never got inappropriate, but he would direct like 80% of his energy to helping her over other students (who were equally if not more needing of help). Similarly her therapist literally UNRETIRED to help her personally 😭 I can think of so many examples of authority figures literally bending over backwards to be of service to her.

race is a genius. jack knows this, crutchie knows this, but jack is more annoyed by it than crutchie. because crutchie is also kind of a genius. it’s not like jack doesn’t admire tech and how much it can do these days, jack just wishes what race did with it wasn’t.. dangerous.

crutchie got race into inventing things when crutchie and jack had come home after their first year of college. race was 17 and crutchie was doing a lot with comp sci and taught race a lot about it that summer while jack looked on and drew out a few fun-looking concepts for robots or AI personalities.

race took both those things and ran. when jack and crutchie were back at school, race was at home, building, buying weird pieces and tools off of websites that nearly crashed his laptop a few times before he’d figured out the proper coding. and when jack and crutchie came home for winter break, race’s first model was waiting in their garage: this strange, humanoid machine with wheels at the bottom of its figure of sharp, aerodynamic edges. one of jack’s drawings come to life.

the next semester, race had improved his model, though it was a little banged up now. and both race and crutchie seemed to know why, and wouldn’t say a word until jack finally pressed them.

“fine. i race ‘em,” race shrugged. “why do you think i was able to buy you those new paints for your birthday? come on.”

this is insane news, because racing is one thing–

“betting? racer, you’re making bets on this? with who? where?” jack demands. crutchie steps between them, as he’s apt to do.

“i’ve been supervising him this whole time,” he both confesses and defends to jack. “i wouldn’t let him do it if it wasn’t safe, jack, and he’s making extra money. he’s racing against guys his own age, it’s nothing dangerous.” (it is illegal though.)

until it is dangerous, and race gets into some deep shit with his tech and the wrong money in even worse hands.

16: What is one of your favorite words or phrases to use in writing?

i really like the word 'prepossessing' as a way to describe beauty! Haven't used it in a while, but it used to be one of my most-used adjectives lmao. i also love a good well-timed 'fuck' for emphasis. Phrases is trickier, but i like to use a 'too (something), not (something enough)' structure when doing character studies - i've been writing a lot of witherward fic lately, and a lot of it feels very same-y bc I tend to fall back on it whenever i'm characterising cassia (my beautiful insecure princess....)

17: What trope is your favourite to write?

IDK if it counts as a trope but 'messy blurring the lines between friendship/romance' is UP THERE for me. i find a way to work it into most of what i write tbh. more concretely, i loooove writing fake dating and friends to lovers. I am a lover at heart!!

33: Which of your fic titles is your favorite?

HMM i take most of my fic titles from songs/poems i like already so this is tricky. 'push notifications on' is probably up there as one of my faves (even if the fic itself isn't) bc it fits nicely with the social media au and it's catchy. for comedy reasons i could also nominate 'for the rain it raineth every day' because i wrote and titled that fic years ago and it came back to haunt me recently when i was in a production of twelfth night + was also writing one of my coursework essays on it and i kept jumping out of my skin whenever i saw that line in the play because i associated it solely with my silly ouran high school host club fanfiction. my actual favourite probably is 'culled a new excuse' though. i love the franny choi poem it's taken from + i think it fits the contents of the fic so well + that fic is one of my favourite things i've ever written (which shouldn't give the title extra points, but, yk. It does!)

36: Have you ever written a fic because you were inspired by a song?

YEAH. see above for the fact i steal most of my fic titles from songs anyway. weirdly most of my 'inspired by song' fics happen to be alex rider ones (i say weirdly because i have multiple hive and witherward playlists) - 'the end's not near' takes its title from a song by the new year but the mood of that fic is specifically inspired by 'inside out' by duster, 'but it's your actions that speak louder' is basically a snippet from what was going to be a songfic (in the very class fanfiction.net sense of inserting lyrics to break up scenes) to i love you so by the walters, 'you know my heart (can't take the break)' takes its title and mood from loverboy by a-wall. outside of alex rider: 'apologies on the intercom' is semi-inspired by last words of a shooting star by mitski, although that's mostly because the snippet of aftg extra content that inspired it kinda lines up with that song in terms of vibe anyway; a lot of my ohshc fics are inspired by the show's score (most explicitly 'menuet of innocence', which is names after one of the show's instrumental pieces); much of my early 2017-18 aftg fic was inspired by whatever musical theatre i was into at the time. now that i look back on it i think the only fandom i write regularly for that hasn't had a fic explicitly influenced by music is HIVE, which is funny since it's my most written-for fandom. i think that's probably because i have enough permanent hive brainrot anyway that my brain tries to make space for other fandoms by saving songs Just For Them lmao.

RAPH - back when I was thinking of giving him a short temper. I don’t think I stayed with that idea. Also his plastron design changed

MIKEY — he’s a silly little guy probably aroace and doesn’t rlly care/know abt gender roles/norms. He’s also a huge romance and drama lover. Such a silly little guy.

DONNIE — was my favorite to design. At first I gave him older sister syndrome for like a minute but then was like nah he’s an older brother he’s not that much older than his brothers either and is just kinda doing his own thing. He’s a huge engineering geek tho, that’s his favorite science f field (other than his super secret special interest that I’m not revealing yet)

MONA LISA — Yeah I actually designed her before Leo. (And Mikey.) Cry about it. who’s Trike? Uhhhh dw Abt it.

SPLINTER — Idk how old he’s gonna be, I just wrote it in the moment. Still kinda working on his design. Not his human design. That was easy. I’m having trouble with the mutant part.

LEO — Yes I did eventually make his design and homestly I love it so much. He’s so blue and gay and gender. Also he cannot stand up straight. Imma have to remember that. there’s just a lil bit hidden cause imma keep it hidden for funsies and spoilers.

APRIL O’NIEL — OMG I LOVE HER SO MUCH. Let’s see: Her dad is African American with like maybe one grandparent immigrated from India or was a descendant of one. Her mom was born and raised in India then moved to the US for some reason (don’t ask me, I haven’t thought of it yet.)

She’s a lesbian, she used to be in softball, she has a nose ring, gets in a new relationship every few months, visits her family in India fairly regularly, usually understimulated or just very hyper but it’s pretty easy for her to get overstimulated. Probably adhd brain. Maybe around 17 or 18.

ohh that is such a tough one omg!!! i love all my children equally (no i don't but. yk) but i think i'd have to say 'the start of an age'!! cleradin is SO PEAK and writing it was so ridiculously fun, and it was also one of the most Alternate aus i've written which is always a good time

10. Is there a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?

mm i would say 'i just may like some explanations' just bc i was not the biggest fan of it but people really liked it which is super great!! but i am a perfectionist so it always felt a little Off to me for some reason

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

hahaha i do not do research for fics. if i hit a wall where i need to look something up/do research/put in extra effort i will simply Rewrite it until i don't. that being said i think the closest answer i can think of in terms of st is just like. research into what did and didn't exist in the 80s/90s bc i was not there and my dad is sick of me asking him bc it makes him feel old LOL
