Hiii, how are you? I hope you are doing ok! <3 sending love and hugs. I wanted to ask you... i think i remember something about tgcf having live action adaptation. Was that real or was just a dream i had or something? If it's real do you know if we will have it or what happened to the project? Idk if my mind made that up! sorry and thanks :)
Hiii Anon!
No, it's not some mad collective fever dream we all had, they really did film it (6 months of shooting between July 2021 and January 2022). Native title is 吉星高照 (Ji Xing Gao Zhao) English title is Eternal Faith.
If we ever get to see it is another matter, i probably don't need to say the main reason is because it's a danmei adaptation - it'll have a harder time passing the censors than the average cdrama. Since the popularity of other dangais it seems the censors have become stricter in any case. Job one is always going to be passing the censors.
While checking chinese websites and articles I did find several sources of a rumour that the site security punched a girl who was visiting the set. I can't vouch for the reliability of this but anything that can potentially attract criticism can delay a cdrama release further. Other criticisms include the casting of the male leads, how cheap the set design and costuming look, and a cancelled actress who may have to remain uncredited.
So it will need to satisfy the censors in order to be relased, as well as satisfy the general public and tgcf fans to be worth releasing and I'm not sure if it can do it all. If all goes well and it does ever pass censorship, we won't get a release date in advance. I don't know if you've ever experienced waiting for a cdrama release but you will not get much warning when it airs. It will likey drop with a couple days warning in form of internet rumours, or just completely out of the blue.
HAVING SAID THAT - another rumour is that a full costume bl drama like the untamed will be released internationally in Sept 2024, bypassing a Chinese release. It's just a rumour but it does make this webpage very interesting! But please remember everything above and not get too excited just yet 😂.
I'm gonna share some set photos just because 😍
Zhai Xiaowen as Xie Lian
Zhang Linghe as Hua Cheng/San Lang/Crimson Rain Sought Flower
Chang Huasen as Shi Qingxuan/Wind Master & Tian Xuning as He Xuan/Ming Yi/Earth Master
Vin Zheng as Nan Feng & Li Fancheng as Fu Yao (+ bonus Wind Master)
Liu Lingzi as Xuan Ji
Liu Jinyan as Ling Wen & Wang Yueyi as Female Wind Master
Xiao Kaizhong as Feng Xin/Nan Yang & Cai Yao as Mu Qing/Xuan Zhen

Lu Yuxiao as Yushi Hung/Rain Master. She played Shangguan Qian in My Journey to You, but as she was fairly unknown at the time of filming jxgz so there are no photos to be found of her as Rain Master 😩.
Anyway, let's all quietly try to will this into existence with physic powers etc.
Thanks for sending me an ask, have a lovely day anon!

One example of such a title is the popular web novel Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun (2019; originally called Er Ha He Ta De Bai Mao Shi Zun—hereafter, 2ha). (…) The book was later adapted into the TV series Immortality (n.d.; originally called Hao Yi Xing). (…) According to largely unverified rumors, the series was supposedly approved by the Chinese censorship authority in February 2021 and the date of release was then officially announced to be April 15, 2021. However, since then it has been delayed numerous times and as of April 2023, it has yet to be given a release date. The trends in posts discussed in this article additionally demonstrate the value assigned to time invested in carrying out creative activities that contribute to the maintenance of fandom unity as well as protection of the cultivated fandom experience. Despite the current lack of access to their fan object, the participants seem to exhibit characteristics typical of a devoted fandom. Fans strengthen their engagement with the fan object through performing roles of marketers and promoters. In addition, interactions among fans and with competing fandoms allow the participants to further cultivate their loyalty to the fan object. All of these behaviors contribute to uniting the fan community under one collective identity, boosting morale and making the wait for Immortality seem more worthwhile. Wrochna, Agata Ewa. 2023. Cdrama: what I watched 2024
This year I got suuuuper picky and also pretty much stopped watching cdramas. Will this be my last wrap-up post ever? Tune in next year! Normally I keep a running draft review going that I can just post at the end of the year, but this year I forgot - which really signals my waning interest in cdramas generally - so my reviews are kinda vague.
No shade to folks who loved the big popular romance dramas but I completely gave them a pass. As a result, I had a great drama year - nothing under a 4/5 for this viewer!
Best drama this year: Heroes 天行健 (2024). Y'all slept on this one. Watch it now!! Even better than JoL2. Yes, you heard me. Shoutout to @lyxurious for reccing it to me. She has the best taste 💜
Mostly spoiler-free reviews of what I watched in the order I saw them under the cut
Follow Your Heart 颜心讥 4/5 (iQiyi)
(score includes extra credit for LYX bias)
Easy-watching, low-stakes, funny, and sweet. If I'm honest, one of the better plotted dramas that Luo Yunxi has been in. You know him as the beautiful crier, but his rom-com is not to be trifled with. Luo Yunxi is great as Jiang Xin Bai, the face-blind detective, but I was so happy to see Song Yi (Yan Nan Xing) in something where she wasn't playing a helpless girl or demure lady. It's the most enjoyable role I've seen her do apart from RuoRuo in JoL. Her comedy chops are also very solid, and she and Xixi were very cute together. The plot does falter a bit in the last 3/4 and slows down as they focus on the other couples, but then picks up and ends happily. Some great comedy characters - Jiang Xin Bai's mom is hilariously over the top - and fabulous performances by guest actors who play "Yan Nan Xing" when she shape-shifts. Also some good fight scenes! This is one I'd re-watch to de-stress.
Judge Dee's Mystery 大唐狄公案- (4)?/5 (Youku, Netflix)
Overall good, with movie-quality visuals, but I was disappointed by the last two mysteries which were simple and lacked oomf - I think the drama was split into two parts due to the new <40 rule, which would explain the fall off in momentum. As such I'm going to reserve a rating until the second half drops. Some of the individual mysteries - especially the one with Zhang Ruoyun - were fabulous. Acting was great from all the leads - don't believe anyone who tells you Ma Rong was annoying, she was not. The gender swap the writers did for that character totally worked for me. And I absolutely bought Zhou Yiwei as Di Renjie (though tbf I've only seen the Detective Dee movies).
Looking foward to s.2 (or part 2 however you want to count it)
Joy of Life 2 庆余年 4.5/5 (iQiyi)
Lots more people have reviewed or commented on this so I will be brief - I enjoyed the focus on politics and the machinations of the emperor, so this season really worked for me. I also thought Wu Xingjian did a great job as Yan Bing Yun, taking over from XZ. I loved the interactions between Fan Xian and Wang Qinian, adorable. There was one scene where the emperor and Fan Jian were talking/ploting/negotiating and the dialog and acting were so aaagh. so clever. I was kicking my feet and squealing. It is nice when a drama does not assume its audience is stupid. And of course we can't forget the 'power point' Fan Xian and Fan Si Zhe give about treasury bonds. Worst part: Uncle Wu doesn't show up until nearly the end ;_; looking forward to LOTS of Uncle Wu in s.3
Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty 2 To the West 唐朝诡事录·西行 4.5/5 (iQiyi)
Better than season 1 in production quality but particularly in terms of the mysteries themselves. Where s.1 gave us Scooby-gang like "the demon is just a guy in a mask" solutions, the mysteries here have a bit more to them, and plenty of cultural interest as they journey farther into the west, ending up in Dunhuang! Lu Lingfeng and Su Wuming still have unbeatable chemistry, but I feel like LLF got the spotlight a bit more this season. I love them both, but hope my man Wuming doesn't get the short end of the stick again. Let's please not forget who the disciple of Di Renjie and all-around genius is?
S.3 they should head back to Chang'An and maybe??? get back to the original mystery of who is the worst royal in the capital!
Heroes 天行健 5/5 (Tencent, YouTube)
Some of the best and most entertaining storytelling in a cdrama that I've watched. The setting at the very end of the Qing, with the turbulence and uncertainty works perfectly to explore the question of who really is a hero, and for whom. And the fights! There are so many!! sometimes more than one per episode!!!! The characters are well written and well-acted. This drama cements Qin Junjie as one of my favorite actors now (having previously only seen him in Fox Volant). Also one of the few guys who can rock the queue and still be handsome. We follow three groups of characters as they try to find the pieces to a puzzle that will lead them to a treasure. One group is the old guard (royalty, the establishment), one the outsiders of the jianghu, and the third are the rebels - the new China. The stories and character relationships are woven together really well, and the pacing of each episode pushes you forward to the next, always wondering what will happen. I seriously did not think they could keep each episode as interesting as the last but they did - with twists that were surprising, but logical in hindsight. Each 'hero' is trying to find their place in the world and do what they think is best for their people - by following the rules, by breaking them, and by making new rules. It's as much a competition between philosophies as it is between individual groups or individual people. This drama is intelligent, but first of all it's entertaining. It understands exactly what it is and what it's trying to do and is very self-aware. Please please pay special attention to the opening credits because they change...(also kudos to the composer who so ably channeled Enrico Morricone when necessary.)
I Am Nobody 异人之下 4.5/5 (Youku, YouTube)
Though this came out in 2023 I didn't manage to watch it until the end of the summer (2024) and I'm glad I did. Pure fun. Hilarious, great concept and characters, well done all around. It gave me major KO One flashbacks - mostly because of the style of humor and the focus on 'teenagers' - but was completely it's own thing. Great characters with sweet and sometimes heartbreaking backstories. Bao Bao you deserve all the hugs forever 😭.
Highly recommended if you enjoy fun comic book style fights, clever storytelling, and slightly sophomoric humor with lots of heart.
Dramas I dropped:
Not as many this year, since I didn't even try any of the big popular idol dramas. Eternal Brotherhood lost me around the 2/3 mark but I can't explain why! It had a great plot, and I love Yang Xuwen, but maybe I just got distracted? When the second half comes out I'll probably try it again.
Kill Me, Love Me had a spectacularly plot-packed first couple episodes and then they put on the brakes. That kind of uneven pacing, and focus on secondary characters led me to drop around ep 9. Which was sad because I like all the actors and the plot seemed good, but I lost interest.

Danmei Rec Meme!
*Thank you @endless-season for this tag. I know you tagged my main account, but I'll post my answer on my reading blog.
How long have you been into danmei, how did you get into it / what was your first danmei? I actually answered some of this in another post here. Officially I guess I been into danmei for 6 years.
Favourite danmei? Also in the previous post but I can list them here. Mo Dao Zu Shi by MXTX (The start of it all 😍) Scum Villain's Self Saving System by MXTX Cerulean Planet by Chu Tu Captivity by Tui How to Survive as a Villain by Yi Yi Yi Yi The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have To Be in True Love by Tui The Disabled Tyrant's Pet Palm Fish [Transmigration] by Xueshan fei hu Mistakenly Saving the Villain by Feng Yu Nie Kaleidoscope of Death by Xi Zixu Devil Venerable Wants to Know by Qing Se Yu Yi Married Thrice to a Salted Fish by Bikabi The Earth is Online by Mo Chen Huan Mist Unlimited by Wei Feng Ji Xu *Actually this is a new one
Favourite couples / characters? Couples: Of course MXTX couples included Yue Wuhuan x Song Qingshi (Mistakenly Saving the Villain) Jiang Xing x Lin Qingyu (Married Thrice to Salted Fish) Qin Jin x You Huo (Global Examination) Jianing x Jiayun (Cerulean Planet) Ye Qingling x Wu Zhi (Captivity) Xiu x Du Ze (The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have To Be in True Love) Wenren x Yin Hanjiang (Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know) Song Qinglan x Ji Yushi (Mist unlimited) Fu Wendou x Tang Mo (The Earth is Online) Character: Wei Wuxian (MDZS) Shen Qingqiu (svsss) Nero (After the Disabled Tyrant Differentiated into an Omega) *There is probably more that I’m not thinking about in the moment lol
Most recently read danmei? Heaven Official Blessing that I'm reading with a friend. How to Feed an Abyss! Part of a danmei club I joined on discord.* This is very cute so far. MC is baby. I'm also supposed to be reading Dragon Blood and Eternities Unsaid Till You Love Me for another danmei reading club I joined on discord.
Any favourite authors? Basic but I really like MXTX. Also Tui.
Any popular danmei you aren't particularly a fan of? Breaking Through the Clouds or PoYun. Kind of not a fan of cops story ACAB lol I can be easily convinced sometimes tho. I wasn't going to read The Husky and His White Cat Shizun, but friend is, so I decided to try it out.
Anything you've been meaning to read but still haven't? Little Mushroom, Golden Terrance... honestly I have a lot on my tbr 500+ more for the future lol
Choose a random (the weirder and baitier, the better) memorable scene/danmei to describe! My favorite scene I always remember is in How To Survive as Villain, I think it was the confession scene. The main character ask the male lead "Do you like me in a brother way or like to fuck me?"
Are there any particular genres/tropes you enjoy / don't enjoy? Aka - any useful info for people to send you recs ;D? I think I like a lot of tropes, but I can be picky too. (I do like wife chasing crematorium tho) Basically I would say just go for your recommendation. There's a small chance I've read it.
Any recommendations to give? Badly describe them in a few sentences. (Or however you like, your choice.) Cerulean Planet is slime tentacle alien bf. (please read tags and the reviews on novel update). The Disabled Tyrant's Pet Palm Fish [Transmigration] playing as a fish and having to seduce a human.
Tag with #danmeirecmeme for posterity!

And here it is, the list of my fav Iron Widow moments! Enjoy?
As always feel free to discuss with me or share your favorite moments!!
It's below the cut bcs spoilers
- chapter 5, I figured that I could note my fav moments of this book as well XD
- starting on not the best note, I fucking hate Yang Guang, I hate him so much, I want to rip his guts out,
- chapter 8, the fight was so epic!! I love how MC just kinda forgor about the whole dying thing and went with the flow
- and that she killed that motherfucker! I didn't have to tolerate him for too long >:D
- it's honestly quite funny that Qin Zheng was killed by pox (I hope I'm getting the name of the illness right lol, I'm reading this in Polish translation and have 0 knowledge about any medical terminology in English)
- just a note but it's harder for me to keep up with those notes for Iron Widow than for Qian Qiu. I think it's because 1. its pace is faster 2. its chapters are shorter. so anyway
- chapter 10, Wu Zetian just needs to scream 24/7 and I respect it so much
- chapter 12, idk, Li Shimin is kinda cute
- I also like strategist Zhuge but that may be just because he has a fan
- chapter 13, those qi power statistic are so untrustworthy lol. I wouldn't be so happy to have so much higher qi stats than the average if the margin of error is like 17k
- chapter 14, damn, I miss Yizhi...
- chapter 19, oh my god, Yizhi is back!! T^T
- I absolutely love all the tiny historical details in this story. I'm probably missing a lot but those which I can catch are amazing (and satisfying, good to know that I know something about Chinese history after all that learning)
- chapter 20, OMG YIZHI IS BI?? IS THIS FINALLY SOME GOOD BI REP??
- ZETIAN IS ALSO BI?? AM I IN HEAVEN? WHAT'S GOING ON??
- omg Gao Yizhi grabbing Li Shimin's leash is one of the things I need to draw, damn, it paints such a clear picture in my mind
- chapter 21, Sima Yi is just a hater by nature and I start to enjoy it,
- chapter 23, Yizhi screaming "you can't shoot me I'm rich!!!" I love this boy
- chapter 29, god, Yizhi, Shimin and Zetian are sooo cute
- also "one traumatized Xing Tian", that made me laugh out loud
- "usually adding qi of a third person only strengthened the dissonance (...) no one knows why we succeeded" yeah I wonder why, hmmmmmm
- chapter 30, MY BABYGIRL LI SHIMIN GOT CALLED AN ALPHA MALE I'M DYINGGG
- I kinda like Gao Qiu. I know he's probably bad news but damn, he's fun
- also a Wu Zetian fan nr1, seeing his reaction I'm surprised that he didn't ask for an autograph (I forgot that he's sexist af)
- tho, tbh, I think he's more afraid of what he can't control than purely sexist; interesting guy, I want to dissect him,
- I wonder if anything happened between LSM and GYZ during that party at Gao's, hmm,
- chapter 31, OUR THIRD PARTNER YIZHI, AWWW
- chapter 36, I actually think Sima Yi might be one of my fav characters? come on, the guy came to the wedding just because he wanted to support his little dumdums
- chapter 39, YES FUCK AN LUSHAN
- damn I didn't think they'll actually kill him. oh well. he won't be missed. judging by his character, even his son won't miss him
- Yizhi is the wife in this throuple, isn't he /jk
- OMG THE TRIANGLE IS FINISHED, THAT WAS SO CUTE!! WAAH
- chapter 42, I like how Wu Zetian's reaction to something not going well is just "maybe we should burn ourselves alive actually", relatable queen

jwqs update FINAL
finished it 3 days ago (13/9) and all i got to say is that each and everyone of those extras made me sob like mad. as if those last chapters didn't do a well enough job at that T-T
can't believe the princess had a name reveal so late as well, i didn't expect we'd get a backstory so late but i loved it. it had just the right amount of doom to prick a heart deep. maybe in the next life.
loved the fact that we had stories told from the characters' perspectives, it felt climactic and enhanced the impact of qi yan and jingnu's scenes especially.
like. although i knew the suicide was fake i simply could not keep my tears in when i read about the feelings of the one left behind...
the forgetting memories part!!! grgrggrgrr PDL when i get you... how dare you play around like that!!!!!!!! those experiences that shaped who you are, those people dearest to you that made surviving in this cruel world worth it...
i am satisfied with the ending, it was cathartic seeing that lu quan and ding yi got punished for their appalling crimes while at the same time the 2 protagonists got the chance to finally be truly free and happy together.
i've only got the most minor of complaints left. there was some stuff that i was waiting for to be addressed but never were. what happened to the 5 remaining books of the malpractice essays? why did xing jingfu never appear again once he was done with the mourning period? and lastly i know that author clarified what prince 7 and 8's situations were but i still would have liked to see some of that!!!! other than that i just personally don't like how xing jingfu's involvement in the genocide was sorta sweeped under the rug after a while and he wasn't held accountable at all. man.
but then again such is the world, if everything worked perfectly it wouldn't be a realistic story at all, it'd be hard to take it seriously and get invested.
i liked how the only definitive ending we got was for the 2 protagonists while the rest stayed open-ended. it's not hard to imagine how everyone's lives moved on after everything. that's good writing.
anyway i love this novel very much, it may have rewired the entirety of my brain a lil. gonna go check out more of PDL's works now.
i am the no1 li yanru fan, fite me #isupportwomenswrongs
that is all.

Hey sorry to pop in uninvited, but I wanted to ask: how did you read 2ha? I'm on volume 3 of the seven seas translation and just learned that the full translation will be 11 volumes long, and that'll take so many years to come out lmao I don't want to wait. My Chinese is good but not good enough to read 200 chapters of high fantasy 😭 if you have any idea where to find a different translation I'd appreciate it a lot. Thanks!
Hello! No apologies necessary.
So when I got into it a couple years ago there was only the partial fan translation covering most of the first half and then a few chapters of the ending, and a machine translation of the whole thing, which I skimmed. The machine translation is Rough, it’s literally google translated and lightly edited so it is not an ideal translation, but it does get the gist of the story across. The machine translation is probably still floating around somewhere along with copies of the partial fan translation, but since the official seven seas translation is employing the fans who were writing the fan translation to just finish the whole thing, it may be hard to find the unofficial versions now. I can see if I still have a copy of any of them deep in my google docs and I’ll msg you if I find it.
So I have still only read the first third-ish and then the last couple dozen or so chapters and extras, which was as far as the fan translation got (translated by several different fans which made it rather stylistically confusing), and I skimmed parts of the bits in between using the mtl.
We are together in this boat waiting for the full official translation, I had thought it was gonna be done a couple months ago in December but nope, it’s only on like 6 out of 11 rip. One day……
I’m still holding out a desperate hope that at some point the ccp will chill out about BL drama adaptations a bit and mayyyybe we will get to see the drama hao yi xing/immortality. It’s a fucking tragedy that we know the entire thing is filmed and edited and may never see the light of day.
Edit: JOKES I checked before posting and I did find a working link of almost the entire mtl if you want that. It’s missing chapters 20-130 but that should all be covered in what’s available of the official translation. If I find copies of the fan translation for the last few chapters and extras I’ll add those in a reblog or something.

The King's Avatar
Year : 2019 | Country : CN | Nb of episodes: 40
My rate: 6/10
Synopsis :
In the multiplayer online game Glory, Ye Xiu is well known as the textbook-level expert and top-tier player Ye Qiu. Due to a series of circumstances, he was forcefully expelled from his professional team. After leaving the pro-gaming scene, he resides at an Internet Café employed as one of the managers. When Glory launches their tenth server, he throws himself into the game once more—equipped with ten years of gaming experience, memories of the past, and an incomplete, self-made weapon. His journey back to the top begins.
Main cast :
Yang Yang as Ye Qiu/ Ye Xiu
Jiang Shu Ying as Chen Guo
Leon Lai as Bao Rong Xing
Fan Jin Wei as Qiao Yi Fan
My thoughts on this drama :
Yet another E-Sport drama. Honestly this one is not that good. As a fan of video games, I thought it would be much more engaging. I managed to watch till the end with some speedwatch between filler episodes, but all in all, it was a bit disappointing.
A Favorite ?

Re:Immortality or Hao yi xing I vote that they filter the episodes to Taiwan were they will be aired online to the consternation of Mainland China. The original audio can stay lost we don't want to cause problems for the TV crew, but it's the first version pre-first no at the censure board.
Maybe make it seem like it was a hacker! An obssesed fan from the West even!! (we don't want Taiwan to get problems from this son in plan it's the supposed hacker that filters it online).
If the chinese government isn't letting it air, the company won't receive their money from viewers anyway. Be your best petty self. Maybe ten years from now someone will do it.

Every time I see a "Wei Wuxian isn't morally gray!" post I kinda want to interpret it as "He's morally black!" Because the alternative is to believe that so fucking many of you read "Wei Wuxian forced Wen Chao to self-cannibalize his legs" and went "this is a morally white action because I like Wei Wuxian and I don't like Wen Chao and also Wen Chao was mean first" and like literally drive me to despair that I share a fandom with so many people who think that's completely okay because Wen Chao was a bad guy so any level of harm to him is justifiable.

Saw a pic that reminded me of my favorite head-canon-i-forget-isnt-canon for TGCF.
Hua Cheng chose the San Lang form because that's how he wishes he looked when he first met Xie Lian. Like, Xie Lian is 17, a prince, an amazing martial artist, dressed in the finest robes in the kingdom of Xianle which specifically esteems luxe stuff. And fucking Hua Cheng has to meet him as a ratty little bandaged boy who just fell off a building. Way to fuck up the meet cute huh?
So when he gets a second third fourth look ive lost count okay chance to meet his idol he's had 800 years to imagine how he wishes it could have gone. And he ends up having two competing fantasies:
Fantasy 1: the suave mysterious stranger who sweeps Xie Lian off his feet and leaves him wanting more.
Fantasy 2: the sweet good-looking boy next door, about the same age, knowledgeable enough to impress this prince who's strengths are physical and social.
And Hua Cheng, being the extra ghost king he is, decides - ¿porque no los dos? - and enacts BOTH those fantasies.
(Something something not all eggs in one basket?)
And that's why San Lang Looks Like That.

Sometimes I think this is the darkest timeline and then I see the New York Times literally sharing Goncharov fanart
(art is credited to Elena Asofsky, no idea what their Tumblr name is, sorry. Article is here.)
...and I realize that the timeline can always get darker. (but it will never be as dark as the end of Goncharov, wtf was up with that?)

I was going to reblog this just as usual and maybe just share my thoughts in the tags, but…
A potential shounen yuri anime—or should I say shaonian baihe donghua?—may have just come out on Bilibili:
youtube
Its name is Shadows of the Void and it will be free on Bilibili’s YouTube channel while airing, whereafter the rest of it will likely be locked behind a paywall:
youtube
I described it as potential baihe in my donghua and manhua recommendations list because it’s focusing on the eventual close bond between the two female protagonists (a move that was already pretty surprising to me, especially since this is an action sci-fi).
Specifically, I first picked up on those ~vibes~ when watching the character PVs, since one of the main characters’ PV involves her trying to kill her future partner, while said partner’s PV features that character who first tried to kill her now seemingly asking her not to die. 👀
Oh, and they hold hands in the ED!
And if nothing else, it’s still a potential relationship to be read as queer in some way even if you view it as platonic.
*Note: Chinese media faces different levels of censorship on a spectrum, and donghua is perhaps the second-most censored after cdramas when it comes to depictions of queer relationships, but Chinese creators still put in a lot of queer-coding. So for a series like this that isn’t clearly originally meant to be a baihe, the friendship can still 100% be read as queer/romantic if you so wish it. Chinese media isn’t black-and-white in that way. Additionally, this means Chinese media can’t really afford to queer-bait, and there’s a general trend of less fan-service than in anime, so even what feels like fan-service will be toned down, and you can worry less about blatant fetishization or sexualization.
There’s also another series that’s been ongoing for a while now that has baihe vibes, and that is Soulmate Adventure aka Spirit Wind Elegance aka Sunflowers:
youtube
And we’re getting a donghua adaptation (eventually) of an actual baihe novel, called Jing Wei Qi Shang (Clear and Muddy Loss of Love):
youtube
The above two series are historical (with the former probably falling under the wuxia (Chinese martial arts) genre, which involves battles and fights and all that good stuff, so that’s why I also counted them as potentially shounen/shaonian.
I don’t think they’re quite as blatant about targeting a shaonian (young male) audience as Shadows of the Void is, but yeah! They can still definitely count. And I mean, this kind of labelling isn’t clear-cut anyway, especially in China where shaonian or shaonü isn’t the established categories they are in Japan (although Chinese romance stories marketed to young girls are far easier to label as shaonü than all the other donghua out there, which may all feel shaonian in some way).
In general, I find the way women to be portrayed in donghua generally to be easier to stomach than in anime. Now that’s not to say that donghua is perfect about it, but for the most part it just feels like women have more to do, are pretty capable of fighting alongside their male counterparts, and generally rock pretty cool designs that—even when kind of sensual, aren’t made into fan-service quite the same way anime women may be, and there’s a lot less focus on whether these women need a boyfriend or on say, whether their body is considered attractive etc (like as funny as that could be, I remember that being a thing a lot in Naruto Shippuden akdjfksjs).
Examples I can think of include from Scissor Seven; White Cat Legend; You Yao; Fox Spirit Matchmaker; Quan Zhi Gao Shou; Fog Hill of Five Elements; Ling Cage; Yi Ren Zhi Xia; Shaonian Ge Xing; War God System! I’m Counting on You; Blades of the Guardians; and so on.
youtube
youtube
youtube
(Kind of random but the video above is still one of the “hottest” or like, most attractive action sequences/displays of power I’ve ever watched. 😆🙈)
youtube
(This last clip is cut weirdly and has MTL subs but what can you do HNGKSHD. I address why I chose the videos in the next paragraph:)
*Note (again): I did choose clips that feature some form of “badass action” sequences, but many of these women get more spotlight than just a few cool fight scenes, even if they’re not the main main character of their respective series. Still, I chose these clips for a number of reasons, including the fact that it’s actually quite hard to find donghua clips on YouTube (rip), that at least these show them being badass without spoiling much, and that hopefully it also demonstrates my point about their character designs.
Even Xi Yang Yang, a franchise for children, started trending toward less stereotypical depictions of their female characters when the show shifted direction. Every season after Mighty Little Defenders has showcased quite a bit of action, and the female characters get to take part in their own ways—like they’re still feminine, but not useless.
I always admire how they let Mei Yang Yang grow and have her own arcs and also partake in cool battles in a way that felt true to her character, especially since she was first shown in the show to be the initially token female character who boy characters may fawn over, who she herself may think of boys, who hated getting dirty and liked pink and fashion and all stereotypical girly things, and who could come across as shallow or boring. But now she and other female characters like her are way more interesting than they’ve ever been!
Now again, donghua and China are not perfect by any means when it comes to how women are treated, but I still found it to be a bit refreshing in not being as bad. So maybe some shounen anime fans might feel the same way. 🙏
I had a scientific theory I needed to sketch out.
