I love the "Ryou pining for an oblivious Yugi" brand of Heartshipping a lot, but I think it’s time for me to write my personal favorite spin:
"Space cadet Ryou beginning to realize he likes Yugi and is unsure of how to proceed with those feelings, while Yugi has been EMBARRASSINGLY PINING FOR HIM EVER SINCE HE TRANSFERRED IN AND HAS BEEN DESPERATELY WAITING FOR HIM TO NOTICE"

Since Pegasus didn't die in the anime at the end of Duelist Kingdom, I like to think the Doma arc was that universe's way of telling him he still needed to pay up.

Since you are watching the show, I wished to tell you some adorable information about the Zexal Manga- in the zexal manga while Yuma is shown to still stim / do stim like behavior and jump around, Astral is ALSO prone to movement based fidgeting and stimming, specifically when excited he will put his hands together and fidget around with his fingers.
Stim Friends !
WAHHH OH THATS SO CUTE!!! 🥺 STIM FRIENDS REAL AND SO TRUE!!! i definitely wanna read the zexal manga sometime after i finish the series (still need to chew through more of the 5ds manga too....i rly enjoy the spinoff mangas theyre so fun) so i am EXCITED to see this in person!!

do you recommend yugioh? i saw a screencap of the guy who's like "no more white wine spritzers before bed" or something and it kinda made me want to watch the show. but some shows (cough naruto cough) are like. i wouldnt recommend this to anybody even though i liked it. i'd tell them to watch specific episodes or fights but forget the whole show yk
oh boy. would i recommend it........ hmm. definitely i would recommend looking up an episode list/guide and skipping filler if you do decide to watch it. but for the rest.... depends on what you are looking for in a show!!
first, do not let my blog fool you. yugioh is about playing a card game. all conflict is solved with card games. all of it. every once in a while someone throws a punch or they have to escape a burning building, but usually somehow these events will also involve card games. somehow. there is ancient dark magic, but it doesn't come up nearly as much as just playing a card game. there are compelling characters and friendships, but most of their shonen-style friendship bonds are forged through the card game. you need to accept this in order to enjoy the series.
(the first few volumes of the manga use a variety of games and challenges instead of focusing on the main card game. the chapters are mostly episodic with a few longer arcs, and the focus is on yugi's friendships. also the ghost possessing him sets at least two people on fire. if you're dubious of the card game aspect but interested in getting to know the main cast, this might be up your alley.)
for the anime, a lot of the zanier lines you see in screen caps are from the english dub, which has nostalgic "call the rice ball a donut" and "give this character a ridiculous accent for no reason" vibes. sometimes the dub is genuinely funny. sometimes it's annoying. if you want an entertaining and over-the-top old school-ish anime, you might enjoy the dub.
the original Japanese is slightly more serious. for example, in the dub, Yugi does a magical girl transformation every time he uses the puzzle. this doesn't happen in the original. there's fewer bizarre ad-libbed lines (like the wine spritzer joke). in some ways it makes the show less fun? but also some of the zanier situations get a little more fun if, for example, the buzzsaws set to chop off your legs if you lose a card game aren't edited out. it is still VERY firmly a show about playing card games, but it takes itself more seriously.
honestly, if i did a rewatch, i'd probably watch the dub for duelist kingdom (the first arc) for the nostalgia and then switch to the japanese for the rest. my recollection is that post duelist kingdom is when the weird voice acting choices started to get grating, and also bizarre editing choices got worse (like changing buzzsaws to.... glowing disks that send you to the shadow realm. or something)
OR you can try YuGiOh the Abridges series, which is housed entirely on youtube and leans fully into how ridiculous YGO is as a concept. I've only seen a few rando episodes of it, but it's very well-loved. (also a warning that apparently it's very "of its time" so there might be some jokes that.... would not be acceptable in 2024.)

@ygoc-week DAY 2
YU-GI-OH! 5D’s — RAIN ORICHALCUM
FAMILY. Oh, there is nothing quite like sharing blood with Dartz Orichalcum.
I worked off an Atlantis AU in which Dartz had two children: Rain and Ranue. This was before the Spirit World existed, so monster and humans shared the Earth. Dartz despises monsters because they killed his father, Ironheart. Rain makes buddies with a monster (Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon), they fuse, aaand Rain is immediately outcast from Atlantis society by Dartz. Gotta keep the YGO trend of all the fathers of the year!! (She gets revenge by making him a prisoner in his own body but that’s a story for ANOTHER TIME)
Rain has a sister that is more like a clone because she was created by Rain splitting into her human and monster halves when the Spirit World came into existence. She’s named Rahlin(the one in the artwork wearing the suit)! They act as warm and close as if they were born sisters and care deeply for one another. Older bro Ranue is an inspiration to them both as he kept on supporting them even after her outcasting. He’s a super sweet boi who loves cooking and inventing using Orichalcos. Rahlin in particular takes after his science interests whereas Rain more aspires to be as kind and forgiving as him
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course, with this being 5D’s, all the Signers become like a found family for Rain 💜 older bros Yusei, Jack, and Crow, lil Luna and Leo as the younger sibs, Aki as sis and fellow scarred psychic (and both of them being in love with uh… men that get them judged for it 😭) Jack is both who she fights with most AND the family member she is closest to lmao. They go through rough patches and at one point all lose their marks because of infighting!! But then they get them back plus the fun manga versions of the Signer Dragons :3c
Crimson Dragon, who is a speaking character in the series, actually is a good dad despite how cryptic he can be—he very much cares for his chosen children a lot and wants to see them all heal and succeed!
(Header artwork is a comm by yura, handle in the alt text! Else are screencaps and picrews :D)

Good news for everyone who, like me, sometimes misses the horror vibe of the early manga!

IT'S FULLY BACK OH GOD OH SHIT WHAT THE FUCK
This is another thing that makes way more sense in the manga (there’s just a ventriloquist with a dummy pretending to speak for Kaiba) but honestly anime Ghost Kaiba shouting “Shut up! I am dead!” is so iconic that I still prefer it anyway

i’d screencap every single time a yoshida-composed yugioh used this line but i dont have the energy to skim thru the bullshit to find it each time but i guarantee you it happens in each iteration of yugioh he’s laid his unoriginal hands on.

Well, I actually wanna talk about the yugioh manga for a moment since I finished reading it yesterday. Literally yesterday. I cried and everything.
My history with the YGO manga is as follows:
- Read the season!0 portion of the manga at least 2-3 times. I also own Vol 1
- Reblogged a lot of manga caps of Joey through the years
- Found out tidbits through tumblr such as 1. Kaiba not being in the millenium world arc (this is when DSOD was being promoted as following from the manga and not the anime so that’s when I officially finally heard that he wasn’t in that potion of the manga) 2. Kaiba being the one to save Joey??? HELLO. (canon) 3. doujinshi based off things that actually happened (there was like, a Tendershipping doujinshi or something where you see Thief King kill a bunch of people in a bar, just a lot of random stuff... which actually happened in the manga and I never knew lmao)
I never got around to the manga for various reasons I wont get into, but I get to everything eventually. But here’s a conclusion I came to before I ever read the manga and had only seen snippets of it posted on tumblr over the span of 10 years
THE ANIME HATED JOEY
And it was further proved as I actually read the manga.
Like... He’s given so much love in the manga, by the man himself, his creator. But the anime staff were like “eyyy we don’t like this kid. lets make him weak af, humiliate him and just fuck him over, eyyy”
I already knew he lost every fight scene he was in in the anime. I knew that already. Those being:
Joey vs Kaiba: Getting thrown to the ground by Kaiba super easily
Joey vs... Bandit Keiths lil gang... Trudge and Ghost or something: Trudge punching him in the stomach and knocking him out
Joey vs Bandit Keith - where every punch Keith expertly dodged
Joey vs Kemo/Sawatari - not that he knocked Joey out but Mai knocks him out in the anime instead of it being Joey
Joey vs Ghouls - again, Joey gets in one punch before they knock him out
The LITERAL REVERSE of all this happens in the manga. The REVERSE. And like, Joey was always winning fights in the early non-Duelist manga, but it didn’t change as soon as dueling was introduced.
He just continuously gets beat up in the anime, pretty much giving off the impression Joey is all talk. And there’s prob more I’m forgetting. I knew of all these before going into the Duelist manga, as I said, through screencaps. There was very little new I learned. But there was a few. One example I really didn’t know was that Joey was never put in a dog outfit and humiliated. Heck, even in season!0, they constantly had girls rejecting him.
The anime was just... going through the hoops to change a lot of key things about him. Both animes. Like I said, I knew a lot of this going in, but when you read the manga in one big chunk, it can get to you when you’re a Joey fan, and just see how... freaking special he is as a character.
I honestly didn’t think I’d make a post. I finished the manga last night, and then Mr. Takahashi died, so here I am, but now I wish I’d made notes. I’m just tryna remember this off the top of my head now.
Like... I can deal with changes. 100% yes Kaiba’s entrance into Duelist Kingdom throwing men out of a helicopter and then later with Croquets head in a briefcase while sitting in a chair holding a gun was one of the best things I’ve ever seen, and the anime did not do Kaiba justice there... but he at least wasn’t made to look entirely different. He dodged Kemo’s gun attack and flipped him over. ...It was something... at least.
Joey didn’t get that. It was never ending disrespect.
I felt the love from Kazuki when it came to Joey.

Tag guide + Info!
Note:
If you are an adult do NOT add explicit or NSFW tags to my posts. All but a few characters in YGO are minors. It makes me extremely uncomfortable and you will be blocked.
Info:
None of these scans are mine, I use manga4life to read the manga! This blog is mostly just a place for me to archive pages I really like so I can find them easier. So far i've read through DM, and I'm reading through ygo: r currently.
Contents:
Character Tagging!
Season 0 Manga (The first 8 volumes of the manga): All posts are tagged as 's0 manga'.
DM: Screencaps will be tagged by arc, not according to specific volume (the source I use makes it difficult to discern the exact volume) i.e. Duelist Kingdom, Dungeon Dice Monsters, Battle City, Millennium World.
YGO: R: All posts will be tagged as 'ygo: r'.
Duel Art (Official Yugioh Artbook): All posts are tagged as Duel Art and as the character that appears in the art.
Each character will be tagged with their Japanese name, how they appear in the manga.
•Yami will be used to describe the Pharoah when he's in Yugi's body and Atem will describe him when he takes his real form.
•Bakura will describe the spirit of the Millennium Ring when he is in Ryou's body. Ryou will describe un-possed Bakura.
•Jonouchi will just be tagged as Jo because I always forget where the u goes >_<
Duels
If you're looking for a panel from a specific duel, search for 'character' vs 'character' (for example, yami vs kaiba)
Other
I may use this blog to sometimes post non manga- but yugioh related posts. If I do this it'll be tagged as not manga.
I will update this if I find other distinctions that need to be made!
Requests:
If you remember a specific panel, and are having trouble finding it, or if you'd just like to see it on this blog, send me a description of what's going on in the panel and I will try to find it for you!
