After the USAF canceled the YF-12 interceptor, the two remaining planes were loaned to NASA to support various test programs. One such program, known as COLDWALL, supported by NASA's Langley Research Center, consisted of a stainless steel tube equipped with thermocouples and pressure sensors. The cameras used to film launches of the AIM-47s were retained, while the folding ventral fin was replaced by a smaller unit fitted with sensors. A special insulating coating covered the tube, which was chilled with liquid nitrogen. At Mach 3, the insulation could be pyrotechnically blown away from the tube, instantly exposing it to the thermal environment.

The first YF-12, tail number 935, became the workhorse of the program with 146 flights between Dec. 11 1969 and Nov. 7 1979, while the second YF-12A, 936, made 62 flights before it was lost in a non-fatal crash on Jun. 24 1971. The plane was replaced by SR-71A 61-7951, given a bogus tail number 06937 and called the YF-12C to disguise the still-secret Blackbird.

On November 7, 1979, Col. Jim Sullivan and Col. Richard Uppstrom delivered the only surviving YF-12A aircraft, 60-6935, to the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, Ohio. The aircraft has been on permanent display in the museum's Research and Development Gallery ever since. The YF-12 flew from test flight in 1965 when my father Richard “Butch” Sheffield was test flighting the SR 71 at Edward’s until 1979.
That’s 33 years!
Interesting because the RSO was the Museum Director!
Yes, he is listed on the official list as a VIP who flew the YF-12. Here is the list if somebody says they flew the SR 71 or any Blackbird check here. sr71.us/Supp_BBook_Pg1…
I just wonder how he convinced them to give him a ride in a Blackbird. Or it could’ve been the other way around. I don’t know the full story but I sure would like to know.
It was a very smooth move, and I’m sure gave him plenty to talk about his flight as he was the longest museum Director in history.
We know who Jim Sullivan is he is the SR-71 pilot who flew the 972 to London in 1974 along with RSO Noel Widdifield I saw Noel at the last reunion. I did read that this was the first and only time that Sullivan flew a YF12. I don’t think it was much different than the SR 71 in the cockpit that is.
The YF 12 held three air-to-air missiles in its bay instead of cameras.

A mockup of would have been the operational F-12B:
Tumblr media
The data collected during the flight test program allowed Lockheed's engineers to remodel the forward fuselage and nose, adding a partial chine to the radome and better fairing the infrared search-and-track sensors. These changes would have meant the F-12B could dispense with the folding ventral fin of the YF-12, though the fins under the engine nacelles would remain.

Legendary Lockheed designer Kelly Johnson's sole documented ride in a Blackbird was in the AT-12 trainer, the Titanium Goose.

60 years ago Lockheed engineer &  Skunk Works manager Clarence “Kelly” Johnson developed the single seat A-12 “Oxcart” version of USAF/CIA triple-sonic reconnaissance aircraft. The Bulova Accutron Astronaut tuning fork wrist watch was choosen to be worn on the outside of the CIA pilots pressure suit in the harsh cockpit environment of the A12 “Cygnus” spyplane. 20 years ago, the SR-71 Blackbird version made its final flight after 35 years of duty. This 1964 Accutron Astronaut GMT watch sits on a Jacoby Bender Champion steel mesh bracelet. In December 2019, this vintage model of steel mesh bracelet was re-issued by Forstnerbands. Addiction is a disease of isolation (this is where the enemy loves us to be). What Addiction is not: It is not a lack of willpower It is not a lack of moral character. At its core, addiction isn’t just a social problem or a moral problem or a criminal problem. It’s a brain problem whose behaviors manifest in all these other areas. Many behaviors driven by addiction are real problems and sometimes criminal acts. But the disease is about brains, not drugs. It’s about underlying neurology, not outward actions.” Addictions and compulsions are destructive behaviors that an individual acquires as a method of coping with the pressures of life. Some addictions have genetic components and are passed down through biological families. Alcohol and drug addictions are examples of genetic conditions. Addictions can be linked to survival reactions in response to family trauma.’ ‘Sex addictions and eating disorders can have roots in emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. Addictions such as overwork, gambling, overspending, smoking, and compulsive exercise appear to be the result of bad habits. Most addictive behaviors are maladaptive responses to unresolved trauma.’ Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Such experiences inevitably leave traces on minds, emotions, and even in biology. Sadly, trauma sufferers frequently pass on their stress to their partners and children. In The Body Keeps the Score, renowned trauma expert Bessel van der Kolk describes the effects of traumatic stress, revealing how it literally rearranges the brain’s wiring—specifically areas dedicated to pleasure, engagement, control, and trust.
