whoever said “write drunk, edit sober” has never felt the raw power + exhilaration of cutting down a 17k chapter after two XL margaritas

Do you ever get scared to write a sequel or follow up to any of your stories? If so, how do you get past that apprehension?
One of my old one shots got semi popular and I've been getting some comments asking for a follow up, but all the ideas I've had for it have a massively different vibe than the original story. I don't want to dissapoint anyone and am now stuck in an overthinking spiral where I hate everything I try to write
Oh yes, all the time. I don't think I've ever written a sequel where I haven't disappointed someone. It's the nature of writing sequels - someone will inevitably envision what happens next in the series, and will be disappointed no matter what plot you choose to move forward with.
I've had very popular stories where I've written sequels and seen snarky comments about being disappointed about the direction in the bookmarks, etc. People really sometimes can't get over the fact that the sequel wasn't exactly what they were imagining, even though the fact that authors return to their original stories and continue them is such a gift in and of itself!
My advice is to write the sequel the way YOU envision it. Any attempt to write for a certain audience or subset of comments will result in you fighting your own instincts as the writer. I get around this by starting off sequels with a very firm author's note, indicating that this sequel might have a different tone (cough, ASOH) and to manage your expectations as the reader accordingly.
The reality is, with enough time between any two stories, the new sequel will always be different. You've grown as a writer in between, the readers have consumed other stories, and world events have happened. Even two chapters in a story, spread out enough, will have wildly different vibes.
What matters most is that you the author feel good about how you're proceeding. I can feel a plot click in my head when I know I'm going in the right direction, and learning to look for that click -- even when it isn't what we expect or what readers want -- is so important so that you don't hate what you're writing and abandon the fic entirely.

Don't want to pressure you (pls don't feel pressured)
I just wanted to ask if/when the next fic of the a room full of coral series is dropping?
No worries anon, thank you for being considerate! My plan is to finish up eye in the sky and then dive into the ASOH sequel. I think there should only be about 3-4 chapters left in that fic, tbh. I think I'd have it done already if I hadn't been in such a depressed funk the last few weeks. So, tl;dr: yes, very soon! Just need to tackle this other WIP first and get it done.

Hey, I don't know if you have answered this yet, but is there going to be a sequel to asoh? :D
Yes! As soon as I work up the nerve to write it. It’s going to be much darker than ASOH and people are probably going to hate me but 🤷‍♀️
