Namjoon X Yoongi - Roadtrip

When Namjoon's long term boyfriend breaks up with him, he says, “I don’t know who I am with you anymore.”

Namjoon reacts by yelling, “Go find yourself or whatever then!” He’s devastated - he thought this relationship was his forever, he was picking out a ring for god’s sake! Not knowing what to do with himself now, he decides to take his own advice and goes on a road trip.

He goes alone because all his friends are also his ex's friends and he doesn’t need that right now. But apparently the universe does not want him to be alone, because just outside the city, he picks up a hitchhiker.

Yoongi is freshly disowned by his parents for "making life choices they don’t agree with" and he, just like Namjoon, has close to no idea what to do next. So when Namjoon asks, "Where to?" Yoongi grins and asks back,

"Where are you going?" 

Namjoon shrugs. "Wherever this road leads." 

Yoongi laughs. "sounds like a plan!"

The plan is that Yoongi will stay in the next town they find, but they get to talking on the way, find out each others' reasons for being here and that they have a very similar taste in music and so when they do find a town, Yoongi just... doesn’t leave.

They walk around together and Namjoon doesn’t know if they’re thinking the same things and he knows it’s a bad idea but yoongi is interesting and having some company would actually be nice, so in the evening, after dinner, when they’re standing by the car and yoongi is shuffling his feet, knowing he should leave but not wanting to, that’s when Namjoon asks.

"Come with me," he says, "if- if you want to."

Yoongi looks up at him and smiles. "I'd be happy to."

This is them checking into a hotel - Yoongi suggests they pretend to be on their honeymoon to get discounts and advantages and they laugh their asses off about it while falling in love.

day 2 of scrunkly week baby !!! still kinda late but im trying my best.

for day 2, the theme is summer! gotta love summer. i went with both the prompts sandy shores and crashing waves + road trip of our lives!! the two go so well together, i cant help it

An arm raises to shield the sun. No matter how strong the individual, the sun will always prove to be quite the formidable foe. And for Paper Cut, the blistering heat is more than enough reason to stay indoors.

“Joe, I love you, but asking me to go out in this weather is no different to asking me to willingly jump into a volcano.”

He complains, yet his feet find their way outdoors, towards their agreed meeting spot. He says hi to any familiar faces on the street - either they were his patients or are Joe’s friends (or both even). Paper Cut has lamented the fact that his networking skills could use some work and he wishes he hadn’t; because it was sort of the reason why he’s stuck in this predicament.

Joe proposed to him that the summer is a perfect time to make new friends and that he’ll make some arrangements to help his lover out. Paper Cut, ever the people-pleaser that he was, couldn’t say no to him or his wide smile at the time. Pretty privilege is a curse, he realized.

All that thinking makes the trip to their meeting spot feel short at least.

“Babe! So. Guess what?”

Joe exclaims the moment Paper Cut enters the scene, which is Joe leaning on the hood of some car. Paper Cut squints. If he has to be honest, he is not in the mood for guessing games. But he’ll spare some of his annoyance to answer a simple question… with another question, since Joe definitely couldn’t hide that car in any way.

“Whose car did you steal?”

Joe is quick to defend himself, most likely a habit sprung from his gangster living. Paper Cut doesn’t actually mind his lifestyle (he finds it quite attractive at times even) but it doesn’t prevent Joe from wanting to prove himself a good guy any less. 

He jokes but the heat gets to him so he sounds somewhat stoic. In that moment, he wishes the sun could just melt him down into a puddle of guilt.

“Hey hey hey, I rented it, alright? And for the whole weekend too.”

But more importantly.

“T-The whole weekend?”

He isn’t super shocked that Joe can afford it - he has his sources of income - but rather, the fact that this arrangement of his is gonna span the whole weekend. He’s already preparing to say goodbye to his free time.

As much as he enjoys spending time with Joe, Paper Cut is an introvert first and foremost. Time to himself is as precious, if not more, than gold. But Joe… oh God, he loves him too much to say no to this.

Calm down, Paper Cut. It’s just a weekend out. It’s harmless. On the contrary, more sunlight is good for your health! You’re a “doctor”, you have to set a good example for your patients.

“Fuck yeah! Just the two of us, on a road trip of our lives…”

Did he say just the two of us?

Paper Cut finally perks up for the first time that day. Maybe there is hope for this socially awkward little doctor.

“Well, at first I did want to set us up with some friends of mine from Sunset District but then I thought… we haven’t really gone anywhere far, just the two of us yet.”

Paper Cut can tell Joe is trying his best to not point out that the former thinks that the lesser the company, the better… but he appreciates his effort. Even if Joe is basically enabling his boyfriend to stay in his comfort zone.

Well, this whole trip is supposed to be a comforting thing, right? Paper Cut tries to justify the situation to himself.

“I like how you had to add ‘far’ in your little excuse.”

Paper Cut can’t help but tease his adorable boyfriend. Especially since he often reacts as he does at the moment: small smile and the corner of his eyes crinkled, with a touch of deep brown on his cheeks. He scratches the back of his head bashfully.

“Okay, yeah, we go on bike dates around here all the time but this! Is a whole-ass car!”

He proudly slaps the hood of the car but not without stealing a quick glance at it, in case he accidentally damages it somehow (he did not, thankfully). Paper Cut chuckles when he can’t find it in him to argue with the proclamation. It is, indeed, a whole-ass car. It’s more convenient for a road trip to wherever the hell Joe is planning on taking him.

Seriously, how can he say no to this?

“I just have one question.”

“I’m not worried about that. I’m existing without an ID so I have no place to judge you for that.”

If there’s anything Paper Cut loves more than Joe, it’s questions. The latter has always loved his curious nature but this time around, he comes prepared.

“Yes, I know how to drive, no, I don’t have a license.”

Or so Joe thought.

“Fair point.”

Joe pouts to himself. Paper Cut has his unpredictable moments it seems.

Paper Cut adjusts his glasses.

“Why didn’t you just buy a car? Don’t you have the money for it?”

A look of clarity crosses Joe’s features. There’s a reason why Paper Cut is the brains of this two-man operation called a romantic relationship.

“...I didn’t think of that.”

Paper Cut can’t help but reach up to kiss his idiot boyfriend.

“Ocean Beach is such a stupid name for a beach. Like yeah, duh, I sure hope it does.”

For an introvert, Paper Cut quite easily starts the 10th conversation in the last two hours alone. The heat is still getting to him and he can’t bring himself to willingly fall asleep. Not to mention that he can’t stop singing along to the songs on the radio anyway.

“Couldn’t they have named it something pretty like, oh I don’t know, Sunset Beach? Sunset District is right there.”

Paper Cut leans back in his seat and sighs dramatically, cursing the fates that gave naming authority to people as creative as a food stain. Joe only offers a small laugh at this reaction.

“Of course you’d complain about beach names, Mr. Writer.”

He simply says, eyes laser-focused on the road to Paper Cut’s relief. The latter blabbers on, appointing himself as the main contributor of entertainment, radio be damned.

“But you agree, right?”

Asking Joe questions which answers he doesn’t even care for proves time and time again to be an effective way of providing such entertainment.

“Yeah. They should’ve named it after me. Joe Beach.”

Paper Cut pretends to gag.

“Full offense but that’s worse.”

The car is filled with boisterous laughter once more that day and the couple have a feeling that it would be far from the last time it would ensue again.

“Okay, I’ll take back half of what I said. This place is beautiful.”

Water laps at Paper Cut’s ankles. It calms his earlier nerves, from the rush to check in to the hotel Joe somehow booked in advance (Joe’s attempts at romance are one thing that Paper Cuts are not too curious about; he’d rather wallow in their mysterious nature). The view subdues his disappointment of not being able to catch the sunset. The stars carry a mystical aura of their own. Paper Cut knew this in theory, as he is a writer, but the real deal will always be indescribable, nor can it be replicated by visual artists.

“Only half?”

Joe bursts Paper Cut’s bubble of thought but he does not take offense. Paper Cut scoffs as his lover finally stands beside him.

“The place is pretty but that doesn’t make the name itself pretty too.”

Joe lets loose a laugh that’s free of any worries. A truly unbridled expression of joy, and Paper Cut finds himself completely enamored. A fond gaze turns towards Joe. Paper Cut feels his heart fill up with so much love. He feels as if he could burst, not unlike the stars above when they eventually transform into supernovas.

“You’re prettier.”

Paper Cut has to admit, he has no urge to roll his eyes at such a corny line. He doesn’t fight the blood rushing to his cheeks either.

“Shut it, will you?”

Paper Cut’s argument grows weak with the loving look that Joe gives him. No amused giggles, no profound sarcasm, only affection. In a way, Paper Cut’s wish is granted. All is silent and still, save for the tiny waves caressing their feet.

Even as they walk back to their car for the weekend, they say nothing. There simply is nothing to be said. When you’re under a blanket of stars, they do the talking for you. But gifts? Gifts are self-made efforts still.

And Joe knows what kind of gift to end the Saturday night with.

Freetown, Sierra Leone is the sound of people speaking Krio on the streetside, the sound of “Aw di bodi,” “Tel God tenki,” and “Ameen,” flowing into the hot, humid air. Freetown is the sound of kids running around in their uniforms, or the ones selling the fresh fruits on the top of their heads. The sound of mothers rocking their babies, wrapped in cloth across their breasts, to sleep. The sound of cars honking because there is only one stoplight in the entire city. The sound of the large pot outside boiling Aunty’s okra soup. Freetown is also the sound of my grandma telling me “Osh ya,” when I fell off my bike outside our townhouse in Southern California at the age of six. The sound of Arabic as my parents do Isha'a prayer in the other room. It’s also the sound of my dad playing “Desolation Road” by Bob Dylan on his laptop for me to hear. The sound of my mother on the phone with her sister as the Real Housewives of Atlanta plays on our living room TV. For my parents, Freetown is the sound of love and loss, memories and war, family and freedom.

In Devonte Hynes’s, more frequently known as Blood Orange, album Freetown Sound (2016), critics attempted to figure out what made his album encapsulate the sound of a city on the Atlantic coast of West Africa. For it’s not just any city. My dad used to tell me stories when I was younger about the significance of Freetown. It’s the capital of Sierra Leone, yes, but it is also a major port city that played a crucial role during the transatlantic slave trade. He would recount that the “free” represented the formally enslaved and liberated Black people who settled there during the 18th century. When Blood Orange’s album dropped, Western music publications did not care for the sounds of the city as they were drawn more to the idea of West African grooves. Publications, like Pitchfork, focused on his incorporation of Sierra Leonean Krio (Pitchfork only refers to it as “a particular African dialect”), gravitated to the moments of funk, and were troubled by the ones that lacked drums and bass.

I was personally troubled by how Pitchfork refers to his album as a “deconstruction” of West African style. Specifically, it was said by interviewer Marcus J. Moore who is, without doubt, cultivated and acclaimed in his work on Black contemporary music in the US. Still, I wasn’t quite sure what Moore meant until he asked immediately after why Blood Orange chose to deconstruct the alleged West African element, wondering if the removal of drums and bass was deliberate. According to Mark Abel’s  Groove: An Aesthetic of Measured Time, it is a common argument that “‘groove,’ has its origins in West African music, in particular, in the drumming which is a central element of the music of that part of the world” (Abel 61). The assumption that “groove” is a defining element of West African sound is one that music critic and academic Marcus J. Moore carries, but one that Mark Abel rejects in his chapter “Is Groove African?”. 

We must ask ourselves if Blood Orange’s lack of groove is a deconstruction of West African sound, a displacement from the Freetown sound, or rather, pointing us to another way of understanding West African musical elements. With 80s-inspired pop-synth songs such as “Better Than Me” featuring Carly Rae Jepsen (you know, the Canadian pop star who sang “Call Me Maybe”) and “Best to You” featuring Empress Of, we get a feminine layered voice that underlines ballads of jealousy and heartbreak. Where can we locate the “Africaness” to the album from pop songs like these without identifying groove? 

To answer those questions, let’s turn to the music video for “Better Than Me.” It was hard for me to grasp (truthfully, it’s still hard for me to point or lock down) the tempo and rhythm of the song. Listening to the song from a traditional, Western understanding of time, the timing feels off–clapping your hands or moving your head in a consistent, equal repeating manner proves impossible. The melody and rhythm flees, but then pause and come back to us. The music video visualizes the unevenness of the song through choreography and motion. Mark Abel writes “Temporal regularity can be explained by the needs of the dancers or by the evenness of physical activities such as walking” (88). Abel further explains how African music exists outside a Western time measurement system, and we can see this arise in Blood Orange’s song as well as the album as a whole.

Blood Orange and the ensemble dancers perform a modern dance routine as the song “Better Than Me” plays through the music video. Modern dance is characterized as a style of dance that rebels against formality, engages with improvisational techniques, and disconnects movement from time to free up space and possibility (Cunningham). There are even points in the video where the natural movements of the dancers slowed down through editing, negotiating a different temporal relation to the music. 

The song is an example of how Blood Orange is not necessarily deconstructing West African elements through a play with time and space or a lack of percussion in favor of pop synths. Rather, he places his music outside of Western standards and measures of music. For critics, it is a deconstruction because the album embodies a dismissal of structure. The sounds of Freetown, the sounds of West Africa, lie in the album's ability to reimagine a new kind of temporality. Freetown Sound is a rupture and collage. Freetown is the sound of breaking and imagining. Freetown is the sound of a hazy dream you can’t quite recall or see. The sound of hope buried within the darkness.

Queer pop fans reveal their top 10 songs of 2024 so far

The team at Popchops has revealed which songs queer listeners are loving at the halfway point of 2024. 

For the more fiscally minded, the start of July will mean sorting out their tax returns. 

However, for the more poptastic among us, it’s time to get very different paperwork in order: our favourite tracks of the year so far. 

Music lovers in the LGBTQIA+ community need more than one end-of-year Spotify Wrapped, they need pop queens ranked, and they need it now. 

Lucky for us, the team at Popchops has been able to collate the most listened to songs from queer pop lovers so far. 

Popchops is a DJ team that puts on parties across Australia with a very lively online community of almost 2,000 members. 

This group is predominantly queer and each month Popchops’ own Brad Elias put together a monthly chart of their most loved tracks.

He explains that he started to chart to better represent what the community was listening to. 

“I feel like the ARIA charts don’t accurately reflect the engaged pop music community who often do appreciate our Australian artists or the celebrated artists of pop music like Charli XCX, Kylie and Carly Rae Jepsen who no longer feel the same amount of love with the rise of Spotify,” he said. 

The Top 10

To mark the halfway point of 2024, Brad collated the list of the top 10 most loved tracks by members of Popchops exclusively for QNews. 

10. Taylor Swift ft Post Malone – Fortnight

Despite dominating the world with her Eras tour and the charts with her new album, Taylor didn’t quite have the same impact with Popchops listeners.

The song did go no.1 in Australia and the inclusion of Post Malone ensures there’s a token male artist in the list. 

9. Charli XCX – 360

It’s quite telling that a song that only reached no.66 on the ARIA charts is so high among listeners of Popchops.

Quite clearly, her queer fans will support her as much as she supports them. 

8. Beyonce – Texas Hold ‘Em

If you’ve opened Instagram at any point in 2024 you no doubt heard this song. Beyonce went country with this lead single and reached no.2 in Australia.

7. Dua Lipa – Illusion

Although it still charted well at no.21 in Australia, this is more notable for the music video.

Filmed at a famous Barcelona pool, it was the same location as Kylie’s clip for Slow and certainly took some inspiration from our pop princess. 

6. Charli XCX – Von Dutch

There are a few things certain in life: death, taxes, and “the gays” loving Charli XCX.The longtime ally has always acknowledged this love, famously saying “Generally, the queer community just has, like, better taste.”

The song reached no.15 on the Australian Dance Chart.

5. Sabrina Carpenter – Espresso

One of the biggest songs of the year was always going to appear on this list.

The track has been a global hit and reached no.1 in many countries including Australia. 

4. Ariana Grande – we can’t be friends (wait for your love)

The second single from her album Eternal Sunshine was another commercial success.

Reaching no.2 in Australia, the song will remind many of Robyn’s Call Your Girlfriend and Dancing on My Own. 

3. Dua Lipa – Houdini

Despite being released at the end of 2023, Popchops listeners are still listening to this in droves more than six months later.

It was a worldwide hit and reached no.7 on the ARIA charts. 

2. Dua Lipa – Training Season

The British singer’s second single from her album Radical Optimism is a move away from her previous disco sound.

With ABBA influences, it reached no.12 on the Aussie charts.

1. Ariana Grande – yes, and?

The lead single from Ariana’s seventh album is the most popular song of the year so far with Popchops listeners.

The Max Martin-produced track has been likened to Madonna’s groundbreaking track Vogue. It reached no.2 on Australia’s ARIA charts. 

Who just missed out?

The highest Australian on the list was Delta Goodrem who just missed the cut in 11th place. with Hearts on the Run. 

Queer artist and rising star Chappell Roan finished 13th with Good Luck, Babe! 

While our very own artists Sia and Kylie Minogue came in at no.18 with their single Dance Alone.

Hello! Hold me like water hold me like a knife is definitely on my mind 24/7 rent free, so I have the need to tell you that Never Love an Anchor by The Crane Wives reminds me sooo much of your keyleth

Just listened to that song for the first time and Wow!! I’ll be honest I got a little teary-eyed listening, there’s something so rich about the singer’s tone. There was one part where it was like you could hear her voice breaking and man that really got me, very gutting and beautiful.

And yes, deeply self-loathing is where my reading of Keyleth lives. (Please excuse me as I once again go on a much too long deep dive into my many Keyleth feelings, this just inspired me so much.) For me, I do see her as holding back from love for many reasons and that fear of being too much is definitely up there. Honestly I was reminded a lot listening to this song of Too Much by Carly Rae Jepsen, which may be my favorite song and is definitely a song I tend to project onto characters a lot. There’s something so compelling and relatable about that (false) belief that you have to create distance because the power of your emotion is too much, you have to protect yourself and the people you love from the enormity of it.

Keyleth especially is so big. She’s so powerful and so important and so much and on the one hand she’s not allowed to dedicate all that she is to one person because of her responsibility to the world, and on the other I do think she’s scared to because of what it might mean if she loses it. I think an easy misreading, and something I’m not so fond of in tlovm, is that there’s some element of will-they won’t-they or an issue of timing before they actually start their relationship. I think in the campaign that they are ‘together’ in a weird undefined way from that first kiss (they certainly act like it), but that she can’t bring herself to define it or to look at it directly because of how big it really is to her. (And Vax’s patience with her while she works through that just kills me every time.)

I also especially love that bridge where it goes from being all these big heavy things to all these small tasks that the singer never did for the other person. It’s so true that when you think too much conceptually, you lose out on the true beauty of what things are. And I think Keyleth, especially at the beginning of things with Vax, doesn’t know how to perform the act of love on a granular scale and lets that scare her off. I think it’s so important that she learns to stop being amorphously afraid of her claws and realize that she can actually tie someone shoes and that’s enough. And when I write her I really love getting her there.

So thank you for sharing this great rec! I’m trying to expand my music taste always and this song was so good. And thank you for indulging my brief spiral.

#Uncool500 - the big list (part 1)

Remember the #Uncool50 music biography I did in October and November? A lot of other people did it as well, and contest sponsor @nonoxcol@twitter.com has compiled a full #Uncool500 from our nominations.

Each nomination was worth 10 points, but we could each nominate four singles for 11 points, and one song for 12 points. ("Since yesterday" was my 12-pointer, the 11s went to "Constant craving", "You oughta know", "The middle", "Bulletproof".)

Ties are broken in a lot of ways. It's all inspired by "This is Uncool", a handbook of great singles from the last quarter of the 20th century. Anything in that book gravitated to the top of the tie; anything from this century followed, and songs from the 20th century and not in the book came further down.

@nonoxcol decided to use the "split vote quotient", acts that had a lot of songs nominated once or twice went ahead of acts with just the one big hit. Where a player had nominated the same act three or more times, the singles they'd nominated got relegated to the bottom of the tie - this happened to Duran Duran a lot.

Finally, @nonoxcol used editorial discretion to freshen up the 20 points section - 55 of about 350 singles were selected to represent decades other than the 1980s, and genres other than indie-rock. As I feared in my index post provocation, the largest minority on Music Twitter tends to be male, pale, and - if not stale - then certainly stuffy.

your eyes struggle to stay open and focused on the television in front of you. it plays some sort of dramatic film that you haven’t been paying attention to. but it’s not like you remember any of the other plots of the previous films from awhile ago anyway. you were simply trying to stay awake, waiting for your boyfriend to come home. but with the given hour, you easily start to doze off, your body disregarding the cup of coffee you took 2 hours ago.

your head snaps up and meets kun’s gaze. he’s at the door way removing his black blazer, hanging it on one of the hooks by the entrance. you look at him in awe as he unbuttons a few buttons of his white dress shirt. for a demon, he looks incredibly angelic, even in the dim lighting. his hair is red with messy waves, his glasses are resting on the tip of his nose and his yellow eyes seem more tired than usual. he removes his shoes and walks over to you, planting a kiss on your forehead.

“did you sleep alright today?” you stay silent for a bit, eliciting a laugh from him (which shows off a bit of his cute fangs) and continues before you can even object. “don’t you dare lie. it’s so easy to tell.”

“stop making fun of me,” you pout, crossing your arms and turning away. his heart wavers, you’re too adorable for him to handle.

“no, no. i just think that it’s cute that you stay up for me.” he smiles, turning to you again, tucking a stand of heir behind your ear lovingly. “as much as i should be scolding you… i can’t help but be flattered that you do this for me. i know its been kinda hard that we can’t see each other as much as we’d and it’s a bit annoying that hell is nocturnal but at least i have something to look forward to when my day ends.”

he runs his thumb over your burning cheek as you take your finger to push up the bridge of his glasses which were threatening to fall off. “anyway, dearest one, let’s get to bed. i’m not gonna let you fall asleep on the couch like last time,” he starts to lift you off bridal style. “will you come with, though?” you ask, resting your head in the crook of his neck, starting to doze off again. “duh. going to bed is a group activity, you dummy.” he snickers as you flick one of the small horns on his forehead in retaliation, too lazy to argue.

reaching the master’s room, he sets you gently on the bed, watching as you settle in the blankets. he moves to the other side, setting his glasses on the nightstand, then climbing in as well. “i’ll change later. i’ve waited the entire day for this.”

you lift up the other side of the blanket and welcome him in. on instinct the both of you easily attach to each other. your head nuzzled in his neck, and his cheek resting on you’re forehead. he sighs in content.

“oh, have i told you that i love you today?”

“you said it earlier, before you left.”

“well, i’m saying it again. i love you so, so, much and i want things to be like this forever.”

you pause for a moment, eyes now wide open. you look up at him. “you’re getting sappy so suddenly again, what’s wrong?“

“no, no, it’s fine. there’s just a lot on my mind, that’s all.” he sighs, the mood slowly shifting.

“you know you can tell me, right? you don’t have to, but it might make you feel better? promise.”

he looks at you and takes a deep breath, taking his hands and cupping your cheeks, making you look straight into his golden irises.

”like i said, i love you. i really do. but you’re a human and i’m a demon. other demons will try to have a go at you, angels will try to come ‘save you’ from me, and humans will see you as a victim.” he pauses for a bit before continuing. “but i don’t care about any of that. i love you, and that's all that matters. i will forever move heaven, hell and earth to keep us together.” he speaks softly and slowly, a tone that assures you completely despite the initial fear.

“but please,” he shushes you, placing your head back gently on his shoulder, beginning to stroke your hair. ”i don’t want any of us to worry about that. right now it’s time for bed, you haven’t slept at all and i’ve had a busy day.”

“mhm, alright. i love you lots, beb.” you place a sleepy kiss on his lips as he smiles into it.

“goodnight lovely, i love you too. so, so much,” he whispers as you both fall into a deep slumber.
