in a devastating turn of events, my sister, who (I thought!) knows me better than anyone in the world, has bought me a Hamilton tshirt because she “knows” I’m a “big fan”

The reason I think the song bodes so well for Mufasa is that they got Scar and Mufasa right. I was talking with @doverstar about this and so some of these thoughts are her thoughts

Mufasa, as a character, is the kind of guy who turns everything into a lesson when we meet him as Simba’s father. Even though Simba is apparently his only son. That means he’s got a reflective, old soul when he’s still a just a relatively young King—to be ready to give great fatherly lessons. And obviously we know he got that from his own father.

So in the song, to have him be the kind of guy who goes “You see that tree? Those birds are watching the world unfold!” is perfect. He points out the tree and the birds and their place in the world, their unique perspective, like it’s an exciting thing, the kind of thing any little boy should be excited about—he points it out and starts to wax philosophical the same way other ten year-old boys would point out a superhero or cool animal to their friends.

An old soul, already gleaning lessons out of the world he’s growing up in, and likes talking about them. Like he’s a young dreamer with his head in the clouds. But when Taka sings “No one looks down on me,” Mufasa responds in this patient tone, “They look down on us, brother. Some things you chase but cannot hold.”

He’s not going to let Taka change his mind, even if (from my understanding) he’s relying on Taka as his only friend right now. He’s not insecure. That sounds like the kind of strong-willed kid who could grow up to be as powerful a character as Mufasa.

And then there’s Taka.

In The Lion King, we know Scar wants everything his own way. (That’s what makes him a great foil to Simba, “we’ll-do-it-all-my-way”)

And that’s in the song. “When I am King they will do as they’re told / Those are the laws for my brother cuz I say so /“ He’s entitled, he thinks life should be ordered according to what he says.

But I think the way more interesting part of his characterization in the song is when he sings, “No one looks down on me,” and he sings that right after Mufasa says, “where they (the birds) go can’t be controlled.” Controlled. A no-brainer response, for a songwriter, would be to have the future-villainous-usurper get his feathers ruffled. The low-hanging fruit would be to have Scar respond with something about how he can control the birds because he’s going to be King, the boss, the authority.

But Lin-Manuel Miranda did not go for the low-hanging fruit. He had Scar respond, instead, with something that almost feels off-topic: “No one looks down on me!”

But it’s NOT off-topic if you know who the character, Scar, really is. Scar is all about how he’s perceived by others.

He is insecure. His life is lived hoping that others will give him everything. The throne, the food, the power, yes—but more importantly, he wants them to give him respect, idolization, adoration, and admiration. He does not want to be looked down on. That’s what’s most important to him.

He’s the total opposite of Mufasa in that way, because Mufasa gives his life for others, while Scar hopes others will give him everything.

He doesn’t lash out at Sarabi until she mentions Mufasa—specifically, until she unfavorably compares him to Mufasa. It’s all about not wanting to be looked at as less-than. Instead, the very essence of Scar is selfish narcissism. He wants everyone to treat him like he’s the best there is, like he’s worth giving up everything for.

That’s why at the beginning of the song, he says “When I am king…my brother, you’ll always take my side.” Because he believes that he should be seen as the always-right wonder child. That’s what he wants. Even when he sounds protective of Mufasa, it’s protective by association with himself. It’s sweet, but if you listen, Taka is saying Mufasa’s whole status as his “brother” is dependent on Taka’s decree that that is what he is. So if someone denies that Mufasa is his brother, they’re defying Taka’s little princely will!

Meanwhile Mufasa is all about being a vessel of lesson-sharing and selflessness. So they really got the characters right, at least in that one song. I hope the whole rest of the movie will be like that too.

another thing I will never tire of thinking about is that despite anything anyone on the show says house is inarguably better at relationships than wilson is. his relationship with stacy is batshit crazy but it’s more sustainable than wilson and his wives because they actually know each other. house has all of her tells and she knows he’s insane. when he lets it slip that he stole her psych’s notes she’s appalled but not shocked. it’s a thing they move past, and crazy easily. Wilson’s wives don’t really know him and house knows them better as actual people than wilson does for all his disdain and not actually being the one in relationships with them. Wilson’s one other “friend” we see plays him into donating an organ. oh wait he does have one more other friend and it’s STACY. that’s it. house has regular poker nights with multiple people. when he’s cut off from wilson he’s not actually all alone as he believes he would be he develops other friendships (lucas, Lin Manuel Miranda). yes they’re not as deep but it’s still a stark contrast to wilson who’s never shown to find a house substitute. then we have house’s fellows who all have insane relationships with him crossing professional boundaries. it’s not colleagues it’s a family gathering and we don’t choose our family we’re just stuck with them except house chose all of them and he bred this environment. and Wilson is famously NOT followed by an army of obsessed minions at work he is hanging out with house’s obsessed minions because they’re house’s proxy. do you see what I’m getting at. Wilson’s social life might be rich or whatever but it is superficial with the exception of amber, cuddy (who loses to house), and a constant that is house. house might claim that he doesn’t care about people but he has a wide web of genuinely personal not surface-level relationships. but well in the end. they all lose to wilson too :)

Streamily Signing with Jennifer Paz as Lapis Lazuli and Malachite

Jennifer Paz did a signing through Streamily for fans who bought a signed print. Here are just a few highlights of the stream.

She remembers dressing up as "Bob" for a charity purpose.

She does some line reads that Lapis had in the show.

Lapis was not Jen's first voice over work. She did The Angry Beavers back in the 90s. She's done a lot of ADR work for films. However, Lapis was her first recurring character.

Regarding a fusion between Peridot and Lapis, she didn't think much about that, but she thinks they could work together at a nursery in the barn and being a therapist.

She points out that she can't draw "worth shite" when a fan wanted her to draw on the print, so she just wrote her favorite quote ("I just wanna go home").

Responding to "can you do impressions of other Steven Universe character," she did some callbacks from "The New Crystal Gems," doing "the Garnet" and an Amethyst impression.

In response to someone asking if she auditioned for the role of Amethyst, yes she did audition for Amethyst and recorded the pilot episode for it. They just decided she wasn't the right voice for it. She loves Michaela's take on the character.

She loved the Mary Poppins rendition by Lin Manuel Miranda.

She comments that Steven Universe helped her with her mental health.

She thinks Lapis and Peridot were great as an Odd Couple type.

Her plans for the holidays include in-laws coming in next week and her kid gets to hang out with his grandparents. She loves her in-laws who are coming in from Philly. They love to drink and she's not a drinker.

Someone started a goth band called Cult of Lazuli because of Steven Universe and Lapis. Jen loves this!

She can't commit to saying a favorite song. She agrees that Lapis would secretly listen to Taylor Swift.

She would love Steven Universe to come back but she doesn't know if it will. She'll just say yes, in her opinion it will come back.

Her opinion is that Lapis's water powers are somehow related to Blue Diamond's.

What part of Taylor Swift sent (SENT) him the album do those racist f*cks not understand? I am now fully convinced she is a fan of him and has been since the 2010s, and THAT.IS O.KAY.
