SAY YES TO HEAVEN // L Lawliet x Reader

The day marked as a cloudy Wednesday in England. The air was mildly harsh and cold, the wind blowing my bangs back as I looked up to the sky with a smile on my face. My heart throbbed in a feeling I couldn't explain. It was more than just euphoria. I was feeling nervous, excited, happy— all the emotions were mixing inside me, but I was mostly happy, and I became overwhelmed that I didn't notice I dropped a single tear.

"Why are you crying [Y/N]? Don't!!"

"I suppose it's normal for someone to cry before getting married. Am I right [Y/N]?" Mello asked as he held my other arm. I softly nodded and chuckled before looking at the time. I soon told the three of them that we should be heading to the said location already. I certainly didn't want to be late for my own wedding, even if it's just a minute.

Matt and Mello were bickering at each other as they held either sides of my arm. Near was walking in front of me, silent as usual. I only smiled while observing them. I found it cute that I was being accompanied by these little successors who kept on joking and making me smile along the way. As we left Wammy's House, we took a hidden route that would lead us to an English garden that is also owned by Mr. Wammy.

By the time we've reached the garden, I told them to halt for a moment as I wanted to fix the creases on my dress first. I wore a simple yet elegant looking one. And I also needed to make sure I still looked nice.. at least for L's eyes.

"Guys, I need a mirror."

The three of them looked at each other before shrugging and looking at me. "None of us have one."

I puffed my cheeks, frantically fixing every imperfections I could see in myself. I gently touched my hair just to make sure that it was still styled and untangled. I lost count of how many times I asked them about how I looked— I couldn't help it.

"You look magnificent [Y/N]. Don't worry."

"Wow.. he actually talks." Matt playfully whispered to my ear. I lightly elbowed him before thanking Near who was slightly smiling at me. We had stayed on the entrance for a moment until we heard something coming from the structure on the back of the garden. It was faint, but I knew it was the sound of the piano.

My feet decided before my brain and I found myself already walking ahead of them towards the structure. The heavenly tune which was growing more and more loud had already ascended my soul to the heavens. It felt as if I was in paradise, add the scenery I was currently stepping foot on for more visuals. The flowers swayed to the rhythm of the wind, with few petals lying on the ground and leaves raining down on me.

My heart throbbed in euphoria, causing a smile to form on my lips the moment I stepped inside the opened vintage structure. The place almost resembled a Cathedral with it being so huge on the inside, the only source of light was the pale rays of the sun that barely made it through the heavy clouds above. Even the ventilation was natural as we were relying on the frigid wind that seeped through openings high up above and on the sides, including the opening that I just entered on. Shadows were playing on the walls and some amount of dusts were on every corner. And despite it being an opened construction, the melody of the piano still somehow managed to echo, giving it a rich surround sound.

My three companions soon catched up to me, walking behind me, holding me a little as I wandered deeper until the image of the man who was playing the piano became clearer to my vision. His back was facing us as he let his slender fingers continue creating the heavenly tune that was the only thing we could hear. He was wearing a suit, I could tell, and even if I had only seen the back I knew damn well that he looked good in it.

But to be honest, in my eyes, he'd certainly look good with anything.

Even without clothes—

Shush! What was I thinking? That would have to wait...

Say yes to heaven...

I stepped closer and closer, and then I realized that my little companions were no longer accompanying me at al—- but instead, they had ran up to L, placing a crown of flowers with different hues which I had no idea where it came from above his head. Mello held another flower crown, and the three hastily ran back to me.

Say yes to me...

I kneeled down to match their heights, with Mello soon placing the flower crown above my head. I smiled and blushed, murmuring a thank you.

I've got my eye on you...

L gave me a brief glance, a soft smile on his face. My heart thumped loudly as I got closer to the center. And there I was, standing beside the grand piano he was using as the music ended.

I've got my eye on you...

He closed his eyes as if savoring the moment of playing the last notes. Dumbfounded, I stared at his beauty, all the overwhelming emotions mixing inside me, causing me to slightly tremble.

L stood up from his seat, his hunched figure walking closer to me until we were facing each other. He looked down to me with the softest gaze, and even though his smile was only small, I could tell he was just as happy as I was. I covered my mouth, smiling, with tears also threatening to fall from the corners of my eyes.

Mr. Wammy stepped and halted in front of us. I beamed as I looked at him, and then back to L. His eyes gleamed even under the dull light, filled with glee that I almost cried at the spot.

Well, every bride really does cry on her wedding day..

All that small and huge bumps in the journey of our relationship is what made us what we are right now. It helped us grow stronger, made us realize that there's nothing like a perfect relationship, but there is a beautiful one. The scars in our relationship is what made it even more beautiful. Our wedding felt like some sort of achievement— not only because I could confirm I was the luckiest woman in the world for being the world's greatest detective's lover, but also because that day was our trophy. After all the hardships we went through, we still ended up there— we still won.

And isn't it beautiful to think that in the end, even after all the difficulties we've encountered that led us to almost giving up, we still win?

We're still winning.

And I was glad that I never gave up on him, because God knows how much I love him, even though sometimes he's unbothered, offensive, and seemed not to give a fuck about me at all.

"Don't cry. You'll ruin your make-up." L whispered. I chuckled, about to rub my eyes, but I realized that I was wearing mascara so I only looked up and smiled.

"I'm just happy. I mean.. y-you're finally going to be my husband. Oh my God, look! I can't even say it without smiling like an idiot."

"My idiot, that is." L put his hands on my shoulders and glanced at Mr. Wammy. "Let's get going with the ceremony already, then. I can't wait for this girl to be my wife already."

I looked down and smiled so wide my face could've had deformed. I then looked at him as Mr. Wammy formally started the short ceremony. The little successors' gazes were all on us, and I heard them whispering stuffs that only made me grin.

To be honest, I didn't even prepare any vows. I just needed to say what I really felt like saying at the time. Even though not always, the truth will turn out to be more beautiful— no sugarcoating or anything, but just the plain truth.

"Promise is overrated. We can't always keep our promises, can we? The word try is more appropriate, I suppose. Perhaps I might not be able to keep my word for eternity, and it's not that I intend to break that, but I will try to keep it from breaking. I know the road ahead of us won't always be full of glee because that's just how life works, but I'm willing to go through it all as long as you're with me. I know we can overcome anything and still win in the end, and even after the end. I.. I sincerely love you, not only as your soon-to-be-wife, but as your closest friend and your family."

L's smile surprisingly grew wider. And of course, he wasn't gonna let himself get beaten by me. He also didn't prepare any vows as I could tell.

"You are right. We made it this far despite of how many times we had argued, even over the pettiest things. There will be more, I assure, but I can endure your whining and complaining. In fact, I'm already prone to it."

I laughed.

"I hope to make it with you until the end. Come what may, but I won't leave you. I've surprisingly become highly attached to you, that I want you to be with me until I had enough of your presence. I adore you a lot, [Y/N]."

He took my hand and slipped a ring on my finger. I did the same to him, still trembling, my vision already obscured. I must've had looked like a mess by the time because I couldn't stop crying.

He kissed the back of my hand, staring at me.

"Very well. You are now pronounced man and wife. You two may kiss."

L unexpectedly wrapped his arms around my waist, whispering, "If I do it wrong, tell me. I'll do it again until it feels right."

I merely nodded. I didn't even know what felt right or wrong— I never kissed anyone in the lips for my entire life. But I had always wondered how his lips would feel. His lips that probably tasted like strawberries and coffee—

The feeling I imagined became tangible as he pressed his lips against mine. I closed my eyes and wrapped my arm around his neck, not knowing whether I should kiss back or not. I was kinda shy— but I eventually kissed him back.

We pulled away, and after some time of silence and just staring at each other, I heard Matt screaming in glee.

"YESSS! The list of successors are going to increase!"

"What do you mean—"

"Hey!" I blushed and shook my head before looking at L. "Well.. we're not planning that yet, aren't we?"

"Now that you mention, we haven't really seriously talked about it yet, have we? Anytime is fine with me. And when you're ready, of course."

"I'm ready, but at the same time I'm not. Weird, right?" I chuckled. "But thinking about mini-Ls running around and.. Oh!" I squealed, bashfully looking away.

"My [Y/N] seems more shy today. Although, I do like the sound of that. But not just mini-mes, little versions of you too. Let's see.." He mumbled, thinking about something. "Does five children sound good to you?"

"Five..?!"

"They said the more the merrier."

"Sounds fine to me.. Good, actually.. Hehe.."

My face felt so hot. Because for the love of law, I couldn't stop thinking about the process of making children!

Snap out of it, [Y/N]!

Ugh, but I didn't.

"Another five successors? Wow. This is gonna be challenging." Mello grinned.

"Actually, I don't intend to make our children as my successors. I would like them to be raised normally. Wouldn't you agree with me, [Y/N]?"

"Oh, yes!"

"Good. But anyway, we'll talk more about it later. I do remember that we're still going to do some things, right Watari?"

"Yes. We should head out now." The old man replied. We exited the structure and onto the garden where we took a lot of photos. Most of them included the successors just trolling around and being mischievous to L and I. There were some romantic photos though, where you can find L doing all the things I never thought he'd do. It was heartwarming that my cheeks hurt so bad after all that smiling. It felt like they were almost being torned. But it was such an amazing day!

The photoshoot ended before five, and we decided that it was way too early for us to head back. And I guess you could call it L's day-off that day.

We couldn't really watch a proper sunset since the sky was shrouded with clouds. But it's alright, the weather was fine and so was the scenery. It even felt better because my loved ones were there.

L and I were sitting on a bench, his arm put over my shoulder. We were watching his successors have fun in the garden. I smiled at the thought of our future children doing the same thing.

Soon.

It began to grow dark. L stood up, motioning me to do the same thing. I did what I was told and the next thing I knew was that I was being carried in bridal style. That was... unexpected. I hooked my arms around his neck, and he leaned his face closer to mine until our lips were pressed.

I closed my eyes as I squirmed a little. As I kissed him back, he left me shocked when he started nibbling my lower lip, gentle at first, but it soon turned rough, his lips moving in a way that indicated he needed more, if possible.

I had seen couples making out both in real life and movies, so I only copied them and did what I thought was good, opening my mouth just a little, and L dominantly invaded it with his tongue. I shut my eyes tighter and gripped his collar as he moved his tongue against mine, back and forth and in circular motions.

He slowly put my legs down, making me stand up without even breaking the kiss. He wrapped his arms around my waist, his hands soon travelling up to caress my right cheek. My legs felt like jelly and I moaned in the kiss. After that, we pulled away to catch out breaths.

I looked at him, our bodies pressed against each other's. His lips looked swollen from the kiss— and there was this enigmatic, predator-like look in his eyes.

It was ghost-quiet. And.. I didn't moan that loud, did I?

And, where in the world did L learn how to kiss like that?

He was setting me in the mood. I didn't like it. Not when we were still at the garden.. I thought it had to wait until we were completely alone! Why did he do it there?!

"L, is this really you? I mean.. how did you learn to do that? I thought you were inexperienced when it comes to kissing. That was honestly, err, intense."

"To tell the truth I've been watching people do that. I suppose I learned by watching."

I flushed and cleared my throat. "Well.. You are the world's greatest detective after all. There's not a thing that you can't learn."

"You are right." He snickered. "And given my title and judging from your actions, you are horny by now, aren't you?"

"WHAT?! N-No way!"

"No need to deny it. After all, I am too."

Before I could even reply, he snatched my moment. "I could take you here right now. If you don't mind?"

"L— what are you talking about? I do mind! We're in public, for heaven's sake. You should at least control your hormones.. Hmp."

"Sorry. I just got in the mood."

"Yes, and you infected me with that mood. Now we're both in the mood. It's your fault."

I looked to the side and saw the successors looking at the both of us in utter silence. And they weren't blinking too.

"Oh! Hi— how long have you all been standing there...?"

"Long enough to see you two doing that adult stuff. Watari told us to call you since it's getting dark and we should head back.. But—"

"But you two were busy.. so we just waited."

I mentally facepalmed. I elbowed L in the stomach with a scowl.

"So, you saw the whole thing?"

"Yes. Even though I wasn't completely focusing on it, unlike these two." Near replied.

"Oh dear. This is your fault, L."

"You said that for the second time already. I know. I'm only sorry that you have to see a sight. Although, why did you continue watching it?"

"It's his fault!" Mello pointed to Matt, who looked as if he was betrayed.

"Psh! I was curious. I needed to get some answers. Why do couples moan when they kiss? It's a bit annoying, especially when they start to look like they're being possessed by the eye-rolling thing. Is it really that good when you taste another person's saliva? What benefit will it do you?"

"I suggest you not think too much about it." L replied.

"Totally right... Err, we should be going home now! Come on, let's go."

"Alright. I can't wait to get home anyways." He gave me a knowing look, licking his lips. I blushed and hit his arm. This pervert!

The three walked ahead of us in awkward silence. L and I followed, our arms hooked together, ready to go home as a newly wedded couple.

I have had a vision of you, travelling to the planet Belsavis. There, a new darkness is festering, one that may grow to rival the other ancient things that dwell there. In my vision, you enter this darkness, and vanish. When you return, the darkness has lifted, and the alliance has been strengthened.

My vision tells me that you should begin your search in the Tomb. More than that, I cannot say.

Quest Objectives and Conversation Tree:

OBJECTIVE: Search for the source of the darkness on Belsavis

(Upon arriving on Belsavis, travel to the Tomb and enter an instanced area in the Cells of the Lords of the Infinite. Fight your way through a few Primordial Beasts to reach a sealed doorway and Cyra Kallig standing in front of it, lightsaber drawn)

OBJECTIVE: Speak to Cyra Kallig

Cyra Kallig: Why have you come here? Fool, you shall fall as all those before you have fallen! Cyra Kallig: Wait... there is something... different about you. You are not here to stop me, are you?

[Option 1 “I’m here to stop the Darkness”]

Commander: I am here to put an end to the darkness. Whether that means to stop you, well, that depends. Cyra Kallig: Ah, I see... one of those, then... well, I’m terribly sorry to disappoint, but I am not the source.

[Option 2 “You’re a Sith?”]

Commander (Force-Sensitive): I can sense the darkness within you, Sith. Commander (Non Force-Sensitive): I would know robes and a lightsaber like that anywhere. You’re Sith, aren’t you? Cyra Kallig: Congratulations! What, do you expect some sort of prize? Cyra Kallig: Of course I’m Sith. But I am not the source of the darkness that you seek.

[Option 3 “I just want to talk”]

Commander: Of course not, I just wanted to have a talk. Cyra Kallig: As if I would believe that. You wouldn’t come out all this way just to talk to a Sith you’ve never met before, would you? Cyra Kallig: You’re investigating the darkkness here, aren’t you? Well, sorry to disappoint, but it isn’t me.

Cyra Kallig: I’m here for the same reason as you-- seeking after the source of this darkness. Cyra Kallig: If I know anything about the Dark Side-- and I know quite a lot-- then I would say that this feeling is almost certainly comign from an artefact. A powerful one. Cyra Kallig: Why it’s only just now created a disturbance, I cannot say. Perhaps the turmoil and conflict in the galaxy is resonating with it and has woken it from its slumber. Cyra Kallig: Regardless, I wish to access this artefact. And if you do as well, I don’t see why we can’t cooperate. Cyra Kallig: I’ve studied this vault and meditated on this matter, and I believe that the artefact is within this sealed chamber. It seems that the only way to open it is with a key of sorts. Cyra Kallig: Within this vault, there are various other fragments-- alone insignificant, but when placed within the sealed door, I believe that they will resonate with the artefact inside and cause it to open. Cyra Kallig: If you find these fragments and bring them to me, then we can reach the artefact inside.

[Option 1 “Why should I trust you?”]

Commander: And why exactly should I trust what you say? How do I know you won’t turn on me? Cyra Kallig: Oh, I very well might. But you want to unearth this artefact, as do I, so it’s best we just cooperate. We can figure out the fine details later.

[Option 2 “I’ll find these fragments.”]

Commander: I will return once I’ve found your artefact fragments. Cyra Kallig: Good, and I hope you do hurry.

[Option 3 “Why can’t you do it?”]

Commander: Why am I the one who has to do the grunt work? Why can’t you find these fragments yourself? Cyra Kallig: I could find them myself, of course-- but if I were to do that, there’s no chance that I’ll let you share in my discoveries, and you wouldn’t want to be left out, would you?

Cyra Kallig: The artefact fragments will probably be scattered throughout this vault. I doubt that they’ve been taken, but if you can’t find all of them, perhaps killing a few of the vault’s denizens might help with your focus.

OBJECTIVE: Locate Artefact Fragments (4) Bonus: Defeat Vault Guardian Beasts and Droids (15)

(The artefact fragments will be in clickable places around the vault, they’re set within carvings. A number of Guardian Beasts and Droids can also be found, and they’ll drop credits and junk loot. Once you’ve found all four fragments, the objective will update)

OBJECTIVE: Return to Cyra Kallig

Cyra Kallig: You’ve found them! Oh, how wonderful, now, hand them over to me and I’ll unseal this vault.

Commander: [Gives artefacts]

[Cyra Kallig places the artefacts in the door. It begins to glow, and opens up. Within the vault is a Rakata Mind Prison, suspended in the middle of the chamber.]

Cyra Kallig: I’ve seen these before... they can trap a person’s consciousness inside of them... but this one, it’s strange. Not like the others. Cyra Kallig: It feels... empty. Like an endless void, but one that spreads out, consuming all...

[Cyra Kallig approaches the Mind Prison]

Cyra Kallig: Whoever, or whatever, was trapped here... is no longer the same as they once were... now, simply a fountain of dark power... Cyra Kallig: [maniacal laughter] Cyra Kallig: Such power that it will drive mad anyone that comes near it, should they not have the strength to resist! This is amazing!

[Cyra Kallig turns to face the Commander]

Cyra Kallig: You... you’ve come here for this artefact as well... I will not allow you to have it!

[She draws her weapon]

OBJECTIVE: Defeat Cyra Kallig

(Cyra Kallig is an elite enemy and uses a variety of melee and Force attacks typical of the Sith Assassin, with both a stun and knockback ability. At 75, 50, and 25% HP, she will stealth out and summon a pair of Illusions, both Strong difficulty, who you must defeat before she will re-appear.)

OBJECTIVE: Speak to Cyra Kallig

Cyra Kallig: I cannot believe it-- you’ve beaten me! I was right, there truly is something special about you... The artefact is yours, I suppose... even I can admit when I’ve lost.

[Option 1 (LS) [Destroy the Artefact]]

Commander: I won’t keep it. It must be destroyed. (The commander strikes the artefact, destroying it)

[Option 2 [Seal the Artefact away]]

Commander: No, it’s dangerous. I’ll leave it here in this vault, and destroy the key fragments. (The commander backs away from the artefact)

[Option 3 (DS) [Take the Artefact]]

Commander: Yes, it is mine... It’ll look nice in my collection, don’t you think? (The commander takes the artefact)

Cyra Kallig: You’re far more powerful than I could have imagined... You can resist its pull. But then... I suppose I’ve always been a little mad myself anyway. Cyra Kallig: [chuckles ruefully] I suppose you’ll just leave me to my fate then... now that you’ve beaten me down, broken me, mortally wounded me... Cyra Kallig: Typical. Just when I think I’ve finally attained power, everything is lost...

[Option 1 (LS) “Let me heal your wounds.”]

Commander: No, everything isn’t lost. Let me help you. (Heals her wounds) Cyra Kallig: What... you... but why would you do this? Now you’ve made me indebted to you!

[Option 2 (DS) [Say Nothing]]

Cyra Kallig: I suppose all of this seeking after power was bound to catch up with me... Eventually, I would have to find a foe that I couldn’t beat... [dies] [[ QUEST END: Cyra Kallig is killed and cannot be recruited ]]

[Option 3 (DS+) “You were always weak.”[Kill her]]

Commander: Killing you wasn’t even a challenge. (The commander deals a killing blow to Cyra Kallig. Cyra crumbles to the ground and dies.) [[ QUEST END: Cyra Kallig is killed and cannot be recruited ]]

(If Option 1 is chosen, conversation continues as follows)

Cyra Kallig: I suppose I should give some grand speech about how I owe you my life now, and will follow you to the ends of the galaxy or something along those lines... that’s what you’re used to, isn’t it? (She gets up) Cyra Kallig: But I’d say that, since it was you who wounded me in the first place, and you who then healed me, that it cancels it out-- so truly, I don’t owe you anything at all! Cyra Kallig: Still, though... if you came here seeking this artefact, there’s a good chance you’ll find other sources of power in the future, so I suppose it couldn’t hurt to aid you. Perhaps someday I’ll be able to take them as my own. Cyra Kallig: Or-- who knows, perhaps if I fight beside you long enough, I’ll discover how to defeat you! [Laughter, but more genuine than before] Cyra Kallig: At any rate, I am more than willing to work with you on your future endeavours. If you ever wish for my assistance, I’ll be leaving for Yavin Four shortly, so you may find me there.

[Option 1: “You should join the Alliance”]

Commander: I am the commander of an Alliance fighting the Eternal Empire. Your power and skills could be useful. If you’re interested, come to Odessen. Cyra Kallig: An alliance... fighting the Eternal Empire... how fascinating. Quite the monumental task, isn’t it? Well then, perhaps I could be persuaded to help, provided I have sufficient opportunity for mayhem. Cyra Kallig: No-- I’m certain that with my help, your alliance will wade to victory through the blood of your enemies! I shall join you. Cyra Kallig: Farewell, Commander. I will gather my things and join you and your Alliance on Odessen. [[ QUEST END: Cyra Kallig is recruited into the Alliance. She can be found in the Force Enclave and is now available as a follower. ]]

[Option 2: “I’ll keep that in mind”]

Commander: Thank you for your offer. I have no need of you right now, but I will certainly remember this. Cyra Kallig: Yes, yes, of course-- but be aware. Should you take too long to show up, my mind might have changed. [[ QUEST END: Cyra Kallig is not recruited into the Alliance, but should you wish to recruit her at a later time, she can be found in the Temple Ruins on Yavin 4 and can be recruited there. ]]

[Option 3: “I would never seek your help.”]

Commander: I do not wish to have someone like you within my alliance-- go where you wish, I don’t want to speak with you again. Cyra Kallig: Suit yourself. She will also drop “Cyra Kallig’s Maddening Lightsaber,” a unique weapon with a special purple-indigo crystal “Cyra Kallig’s Lightsaber Crystal” and a dark-side haze tuning “Cyra Kallig’s Lightsaber tuning”. Ah yes, yet another character that deserves more attention from me (even though she’d one of my mains? i’m weird), thanks for the asks!

6. Do they consider laws flexible, or immovable?

It’s... complicated. On one hand, Airistan is very particular about following laws, rules, and orders, she follows them and makes sure everyone else does, even if they complain too much. On the other hand, she would like to change some of the Republic laws for her personal goals (like removing corruption among politicians and military officers, dealing with incompetence in the army, spending more resources on war than on everything else, etc), so I guess flexible?

27. What causes them to feel dread?

Complete and total defeat. Knowing that everything she does is worthless. That every sacrifice she made (and forced others to make) was for nothing. That she has been a monster for a lost cause. Airistan wouldn’t admit this easily, but this is what she’s afraid of the most.

40. How sensitive are they to their own flaws?

To many’s surprises, Airistan is capable of recognizing some (if not most) of her flaws, but her reaction to this depends on what kind of flaws is it. If this is a flaw in her combat technique, she simply works on it to become a more competent fighter. The same goes for strategy, with a few exceptions. When it comes to personality flaws, Airistan prefers to ignore them, sincerely believing these are actually her strengths, but deep inside she knows it’s a lie. For example, she’s aware that she’s too harsh on people that follow her, willing to risk too much to win, and, to be honest, Airistan isn’t proud of letting so many people die and she knows this is not the right thing, but still keeps on doing this. She has this attitude of Garza: ‘We are heartless so the citizens of the Republic dont have to’, and this is sincere.

B. What inspired you to create them?

Oh, that’s easy: at that moment I finished JK story twice on LS Knight and wanted to try on DS. That’s how Airistan 1.0 was created, and I did the story in, like, 2 or 3 days (it was a double xp event). That version was slightly different from the one I have now - Airistan 1.0 didn’t have the ‘I respect a well-grilled hot-dog more than the Jedi’ attitude from the beginning, she was less loyal to the Republic, her parents’ backstory was nonexistent (and she looked a bit differently, but that’s irrelevant). But what wasn’t different, that’s her not being a completely dark sided maniacal killer and her rage worsening after being possessed by Vitiate.

This is an apology/continuation? for/of “The blood on your hands” so I’m tagging @murder-schmurder @pistachiolan

Summary: Henrik is dead and now Chase is alone, or is he?

Based off a ghost au nobody wanted, I made awhile ago. i got lazy toward the end and just copied the ending of that thing.

Waning: Death, Drinking

Chase always hated funerals. Not just because someone died. It’s the layers of makeup covering the clear hole in a person's head, the peaceful expression, the slight bit of blush they put on the person's cheeks, and all the little things people do to make a dead person seem alive, that make him hate them.

Another reason Chase hates funerals is everyone's pitying looks and meaningless words. The way everyone slightly turns to look at him when the pastor asks if anyone wants to say anything.

“Is everything okay?” No everything is not okay, that's why people are crying. “We’ll move on eventually, it’s what he’d want us to do.” He’s dead, he can’t want anything.

The worst thing about funerals is looking into the coffin and seeing a man you’ve spent your entire life with. The man who stole your heart and will now be buried with it.

He asks for a moment alone and everyone leaves without question, because that’s what you do when someone asks to be alone with a dead body.

“So this is it.” Who is he talking to, it’s not like the body can hear him. “The last time I’ll see you, Henrik.”

The hair raises on the on the back of his neck and he gets that feeling in the back of his mind that he’s being watched.

“I thought I asked to be alone,” he said then turned around to find no one there.

He scratches the back of his neck and looks back down into the coffin. There’s a few things in the coffin, old books, a bottle of liquor, a stethoscope. What’s he gonna do with that? Check a ghosts heart beat?

“I know you were never a religious person but I hope if there’s an afterlife you end up in the good one not the bad one.” It sounded stupid, but he didn’t have anything else to say.

That’s a lie and everyone who’s lost anyone knows it. There’s a million questions, and jokes, and stories, he wants to ask and tell, but now they’d just fall on deaf ears.

Again that feelings of being watched returned and his shoulder felt cold, like the air conditioner suddenly turned on. As far as he knew this church didn’t have an air conditioner and he was still alone.

As soon as he turned around the cold feeling disappeared. He looked around the room for anything that could’ve caused it, a hole in the ceiling, a partly opened window, but there was nothing.

Still that feeling persisted and it kept him on edge.

Before he had much time to think, the funeral was ver, Henrik was shoved into the ground and Chase was driving himself home.

It’s odd, he thought he’d feel more devastated, guess the whole shock and sadness wore off after he first found out about the accident. Now he just felt a numb hole in his heart.

That numb hole seemed to grow bigger each day, as well as the number of odd occurrences.

When I say odd occurrences I don’t mean losing your keys or forgetting where you placed something, I mean finding your laundry that you haven’t done in a month, clean and folded on your bed and finding breakfast made for you after you get up.

Like any normal person, Chase was weirded out and disturbed, but as time went on he just chopped it up to him starting to lose his memories. Maybe he should see a doctor. How common is Alzheimer's at his age?

The weird occurrences didn’t distract him from the ever growing hole, nor did it stop all the what ifs Chase had floating around his head.

He’d had feelings for the doctor for a long time, everyone, except for him and the doc, have probably known for a long time. What if he’d realized sooner? Maybe if they’d been together, these what ifs wouldn’t hurt so much.

Or maybe they’d be worse, with what ifs about a life together flooding his head instead.

God, he’s what ifing his what ifs.

The what ifs overpower his rational thoughts and he does something he’s not too proud of. After years of staying sober and not binge drinking, he chugs a bottle of vodka until he passes out.

But before he passes out he stumbles into the kitchen, his mind in a blur, unable to think about what he’s doing. He has a knife in his hand now. When did he grab it, who knows?

He aims the knife over his chest and then he feels like he’s been slapped across the face… darkness.

Is this what dying feels like? Just an endless darkness? Wait that can’t be right.

He awakens on his kitchen floor, his back feeling like he’d slept on rocks and his head ten times worse. Chase wanted to just lie there on the floor, but his headache wasn’t getting any better so he forced himself up.

On the counter he found a glass of water and a pill that he didn’t remember setting out, which made sense considering how much he drank, but knowing himself he wouldn’t be smart enough to do that. Still he took it a went to lie down on the couch and wait for his hangover to pass.

Three weeks after Chase binge drank and he still has no idea how, when, and why he stabbed a knife into the wall. Said knife is still stuck in the wall and is jammed against something and Chase doesn’t want to damage his wall or call a professional.

Along with that, he also forgot multiple times, to book a therapist appointment and yet he still had one booked. Maybe he should look into memory loss.

He goes over to the fridge to make a morning snack when he finds a sticky note on it.

It reads: “Remember to make a trip to the store.”

It’s not all that weird, Chase leaves notes for himself all the time, but that's not what bothers him.

The handwriting. It’s not his. The sloppy yet professional look. The little loops on the Ls and Is. It’s impossible.

Yet here the sticky note is, written in Henrik’s hand, a note reminding him to eat. He’s reminded of old times when Henrik would text and call him everyday to make sure he eats, well not really old days but they feel like such a long time ago.

A thought comes to him. It’s a silly thought, but he doesn’t have any better ideas or anything better to do.

That night he steals an Ouija board from Marvin. He’s senn what Marvin can do so it’s to too farfeched that he might be able to contact the dead with this thing, is it?

With everything set up he begins. He carefully sets his hands on the little triangle piece and almost has a heart attack when it moves.

H-E-L-L-O C-H-A-S-E it spells out.

It’s impossible. Maybe he’s just going insane.

He chokes back a sob that forced its way up his throat.

H-E-N-R-I-K ? it’s a long shot, but…

The piece moves over the yes.

He pulls his hands back and whips a tear from his face. For a split second he can see a figure in front of him.

“Henrik!” he says out loud, reaching for him. He can’t feel him but the air is slightly colder in that area.

He sobs as he slowly puts his hand back on the triangle piece.

It moves again.

I-V-E M-I-S-S-E-D Y-O-U V-E-R-Y M-U-C-H

Chase uses his free hand to muffle another sob. He shuts his eyes.

“So have I.”

A feels something cold press against his cheek.

He still can’t see the doctor, but he can tell where he is.

A tear is whipped off his face.

“I’m not leaving you again.” He hears Henrik say out loud.

“Where have you been?” Chase squeaks.

“I’ve been standing right in front of you.”

I’m curious on what you think balancing would actually mean. I always get get caught up on the light = good and dark = evil dichotomy. George Lucas has said you need both for the Force, but that kinda rubs me wrong way if Light and Dark are good and evil. I don’t know it’s like saying evil is necessary. I guess that why I think the Dark isn’t necessarily evil, but of darker feelings/emotions that those with evil intent like to use. -Wanderingspacedragon

Alright, so this grew into a longish meta that ended up exceeding the confines of GFFA and touching upon real world philosophy. But, I guess this is what Lucas asked for when he first came up with the force. So here goes nothin'.

Master Carl-Gus Jungobi's wisdoms

First of all, reaching to LF themselves, Brian Young defines light as the suppression of ego and dark as its amplification. So far so good. However, from jungist perspective (and a nice intruduction to how C. G. Jung fits into GFFA as well as mythology in general done by crash course can be found here) any juxtaposition like day-night, sun-moon, angel-demon, heaven-hell also quicksilver and sulphur but that's a different level of symbolism are all metaphors of conscious and unconscious. Conscious mind is a socialized, clear and immersed in the norms of the community while the unconscious is individual, animalistic and shapeless - and imo, that's rather simple to reconcile with what Young wrote on twitter. Existing only on the level of consciousness always puts the community before the individual whereas being guided only by our unconscious reduces the outside world to the level of tools to satisfy our needs. Because of that, Jung points out that unconscious has been throughout the ages identified as evil (this is why those needs had to be repressed in the first place, hence producing the shadow archetype in the unconscious), which leads us to some really intriguing topics.

Because the question of nature, cause, purpose and possible necessity of evil is nothing short of one of the most important questions of any religion and moral philosophy - and it seems well into 8th millennium we're nowhere closer to a definite answer. The statement good and evil are abstract concepts tends to cause very negative reactions, because it appears like denial of their reality, but I think it's misunderstanding of what an abstraction is. When I say numbers are abstract concepts, the matter seems clear - there is no independently existing number two, yet it exists in the sense of quantity - but no one seems to protest that I don't believe in maths or sth. There's an anecdote about Einstein's student years where he compared good and evil not to binary opposites, but rather to temperature. We simplify the issue to the point of warm and cold, but is there some absolute border between them? What is the polar opposite of -1°C, +1° or +30°? There exists an absolute zero, at which all atom movement ceases, but is there an absolute plus? But even though there is no physical impossibility of life in too hot surroundings, like there is in the case of absolute zero, yet we earthlings feel extreme warmth isn't that good either, don't we? And then there's a matter of subjective experience - someone living in Siberia has different ideas of warm and cold than someone living in the rainforest - but it doesn't change the fact that objectively speaking 20°C is warmer than 9°C and both of these people will recognize it. So regardless of whether it was Einstein who made this comparison, I think it's a pretty good metaphor.

Leaving philosophy and coming back to psychology, the basic point that Jung makes about conscious and unconscious is that individualized, integrated self needs them both in order to lead a creative, meaningful life. Either of them alone limits the person, the unconscious to the purely biological life, fulfillment of one's wants, but conscious to the self repeating sustenance. Arguably, life on the purely conscious level (in pure light, so to speak) is a safer, better choice - but it results in changelessness, in mindless recreation. Yes, it's not as selfishly destructive as that of pure unconscious, but it's an unproductive as life of Adam and Eve in Eden, arid like Tatooine and Jakku and, at worst, dogmatic like the prequel jedi. Both conscious and unconscious are infertile when kept strictly separated, hence the ever present symbols of female and male - and marriage as a metaphor of integration. Now, the important point is that the integration has to be on conditions, so to speak, of the conscious - but unconscious has to be accepted for what it is, it can't be forced to become overall conscious, only this way the shapeless mass of our imagination can keep its vital powers.

Using the jungist metaphor, the general story we hitherto got in SW presents itself as follows: we start off in strict consciousness repressing the unconscious (jedi fighting siths in every form) - and so it finally got itself a psychotic flooding of the psyche with the unconscious content (a nigredo, blackening, using alchemical terminology Jung studied) in form of Anakin’s fall into his shadow persona of Darth Vader and republic becoming the empire. Jung would venture as far as to say that a psychotic episode is necessary to the growth, though I would argue that's mostly because he lived in very repressive times. Regardless, the first flooding of the unconscious is almost always depicted as violent and terrifying, with one of the most visual metaphors being a total eclipse when the moon blanks out the sun completely.

Thus, the originals are basically the painstaking process of the psyche overcoming the psychotic episode and consciousness regaining control. One might argue that the individuation process is actually completed on the individual level - Luke appears to have accepted Darth Anakin for what he is, and thus integrated his own shadow as well - which is why old EU would have Leia accept her father too, eventually, and for some the sequels are straight up redundant rehash of the originals. Far from thinking the bottom line wasn't that DLF want to make money, the apparent narration fits pretty well with the idea of re-repression: the shadow isn't integrated, ex-imperials are banished and the Skywalkers accept Anakin only by rejecting Vader - and so nigredo repeats itself, and will continue to repeat until the shadow is integrated. Additionally, it can be argued that Luke committed a mistake of thinking the individuation is a static goal and as such refused to reenter the spontaneous life (refusal to rebuild the jedi until it was really necessary). This is a frequent temptation and if it rings a bell with a difference between a buddha and a bodhisattva, bingo - buddha was considered by Jung one of the metaphors of the integrated self.

Which brings us to our current holy marriage and where they left off at the end of tlj. Viewing Rey and Ben as avatars of light (conscious, communitarian, idealistic) and dark (unconscious, individual, emotional) makes much more sense than when we view them as plain good vs. evil. Now, while no one seems to have any problems grasping the problem with Ben's actions (integration on unconsciousness’ condition is simply another nigredo), from a psychoanalytic viewpoint Rey isn't that much more in the right. She isn't willing to integrate the shadowy unconscious, only wants the unconscious to become conscious, if not downright negates the existence of the shadow (yeah, she’ll cross the galaxy to help Ben turn - only she never asked if he even wants to turn). So while most reylos want to see her as determined to wait for Ben and an/is as having given up on him completely, I would say her current state is closest to Luke's then my father is truly dead in RotJ. She isn't determined to save him in as much as do the right thing and it's likelier to mean sparing him. That being said, she needs to undergo her own violent nigredo if she is to accept him the way Luke accepted Vader by the time he threw away the ls.

An interesting side reflection occured to me while writing this answer and thinking of how abstract ideas of good and evil get framed by different moral philosophies and religions (to get something straight: I analyze religions from a purely social/cultural sciences pov, so I'm not evaluating them in any way - and regardless, Jung saw all religions are basically metaphors of individuation. I'm also not arguing what is Lucas's preferred interpretation of the force - I'm just discussing the discourse within the trilogies). So I think the force has always had strong vibes of some form of divinity ever since it was first discussed by Obi-Wan and then by Yoda. However, it appears to me the conceptualization of it, as well as its two sides, has altered throughout the subsequent trilogies, counting OT, PT, ST.

In the originals the vibes are definitely closest to East Asia’s religions/moral philosophies, with main connotations being dao and yin-yang. There isn't much talk of force having a will of its own but rather being a general flow of reality that one can be attuned to or not - Luke's compassion for Vader isn't shown as qualitatively more correct, more of what the force wants, than Yoda's and Obi-Wan's condemnation. The prequels are much more Mediterranean/Middle East in tone, with Anakin's fall being framed as a greek tragedy but also force being shown as having a much more concrete will, definite plan for the galaxy and directly interfering in the history. This constitutes what Mircea Eliade considers the crucial feature of judeo-christian-islamic tradition: God has a will similar to human and a linear plan for humanity. And because of that I'd say the prequels are very First Testament in tone. There's absolutely no way to prove that destruction of the jedi, including the youngling massacre, wasn't a part of Anakin's purpose in bringing balance to the force - and when we look at the First Testament then we get passages like the flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, egyptian plagues (including death of the first borns!) or the Book of Job. None of this disproves God's benevolence, but destruction is a frequent part of God's plan.

In contrast the sequels (and Disney era in general) got very close to the New Testament and christian theology. Light and dark are no longer equal elements of the universe, just as God and satan aren't equal opponents, there would be no evil if Lucifer hasn't rebelled, force is its light side and dark an aberration, so to speak. Rey and Kylo Ben are framed as equally powerful, but the force prefers her because of her allegiance to the light. The downsides are that trusting the force and keeping up hope (faith and hope being two of the three theological virtues) are themes brought up ad nauseam and the public plot is infuriatingly predictable - angels are going to win no matter how numerous and technologically advanced the halls of hell get. There is no Battle of Evermore in christianity, there's only the Last Judgment, so the only interesting battlefield is each individual soul. The upside is Prodigal Sons, Lost Sheep and Adulterous Women galore - as well as despair understood as loss of faith in God's mercy and possibility of one's salvation as one of the sins capable of forfeiting the soul.

But anyway, the bottom line of this prolonged rambling (what can I say, I could deliberate on the dichotomies of the force for ages) is that light and dark side symbolise conscious and unconscious and the balance means integration of the self. It definitely fits into the jungist reading and would give this trilogy a narrative value.

Though obviously, this topic wouldn't be so interesting if there was a definite answer.

Adrien glanced around the corner of the locker room, feeling his heart skip a beat when he laid eyes on Marinette chatting casually with Rose. She was so nice and friendly with everyone, and he wished more than anything that she’d be that friendly with him. Imagining being alone with her made his palms sweaty, but he longed for each chance to hear her speak even two words to him. He could spend his whole life getting lost in those brilliant blue eyes, and he adored the way they lit up when she took charge of a situation. She wasn’t their class president for nothing.

“Dude, just talk to her. Marinette is really nice,” Nino advised in his ear, causing him to jump. Adrien shushed him, grabbing his wrist and pulling him back out into the courtyard.

“I’m working on it, okay? I just don’t know what to say when I get up to her. I get nervous,” He said, rubbing the back of his neck.

“Seriously? Mr. Hot Teen Model of the Year gets nervous around pretty girls?” Nino cocked a skeptical brow.

“Around this particular beautiful, smart, creative, talented-ow!” Nino punched his arm before he could get too lost. “Yes. Even I get nervous. I’ve never exactly done this stuff before, ya know.”

“Just be yourself, bro. I bet she’ll be into you.”

“You think?” Adrien’s eyebrows raised hopefully.

“I’m your best bud, Adrien. If anyone knows how awesome you are, it’s me,” Nino said pointedly, gesturing to his chest with his thumb.

“Okay. I’m going in. Wish me luck,” He gulped, squaring his shoulders in a show of mock-confidence as he strutted back into the locker room.

Marinette hummed cheerfully to herself as she loaded her books into her backpack. A backpack she had made herself, he might add. She was so talented.

“Hey, Marinette,” He started, clasping his hands behind his back politely.

She turned to face him, a dazzling smile warming her features. “Hey, Adrien! What’s up?”

“I, uh, well, I was wondering if you…got the new Ultimate Mecha Strike yet?” Her blue eyes trained on him so casually made his palms sweat, and he lost a bit of his nerve.

“Oh, yeah! My dad and I have been playing all week. It’s a lot of fun,” She said, and Adrien tucked his hands in his pockets to hide how they shook.

“Maybe we could play together sometime?” He offered with a surprisingly smooth voice.

“Sure! When are you free? I know you’re usually pretty busy.”

“Oh, uh, yeah. I have fencing practice after school today, but I could come over when it’s done,” He said, shifting his weight to his heels.

“Sounds good,” She replied, shutting her locker and slinging her bag over her shoulders. “See you then.”

Adrien watched her go with a dreamy smile, still entranced by the friendliness of her tone. He was going to hang out at her house after school. Suddenly, his face paled, and he realized just what he’d agreed to causing his heart to erupt in his chest. This afternoon he’d be alone with Marinette; alone in her room sitting only inches apart…

What if their hands brushed again when they went to pick up their controllers? What if she noticed how sweaty his hands were? What if he stared too long? Or blurted out how amazing he thought she was?

Adrien shook himself and took a deep breath. Everything would be fine. Nino was right about Marinette being super nice, and on the other hand, she had seemed eager to hang out with him too. He supposed that he was just going to have to do his best to impress her if he ever hoped to be more than just a friend.

2020 Hyundai Elantra

Rental cars are so great- it’s like getting to sidestep your daily driver for a car mistress, or car gigolo. Not that I have any desire to do such a thing, as I’m in a perfectly healthy relationship with an older Volkswagen. But she needed a few days off, and with this virus business I didn’t wanna Uber, so a rental it would have to be. Wanting to save money to put towards the Jetta’s possible costly maintenance, I first checked Turo, which was crazy cheap, but all they had available were a bunch of 2012 Fiat 500s. Fun fact- when my Honda got stolen in 2012 I tried to rent a car from a company through my insurance- all they had available was a then brand new Fiat 500, but they couldn’t let me rent it they said, because it kept breaking down on them. Back in 2012. So no thanks on the same car eight year later. I moved on to Enterprise, and I decided to go with the lowest-priced deal possible, which promised a Mitsubishi Mirage or similar. I’m furloughed at the moment, so this thing would just have to get me home from and then back to my mechanic’s. I could deal with an economy car just for that.

The plan was to meet the rental agent at the repair shop where I was leaving my car, sign some stuff, and then take off in the Mirage or similar. Wanting to socially isolate as much as possible, I decided to wait in my car until the rental agent and the employee who was driving them back to their office both showed up. First, I saw a brand new Hyundai Elantra with out of state plates and a barcode on the windshield pull into a spot. I figured that was the shuttle back, so I got out of my car, figuring my rental was right behind the Hyundai. And sure enough, moments later a Chevy Sonic pulled up. A Sonic is similar to a Mirage, right? I immediately noticed that the Sonic was absolutely filthy and kinda dented up, which, whatever, I’m renting from the bottom shelf, but also that the driver was an elderly man with no face mask. Huh. Well, okay. “Is that mine?” I cheerfully asked the man, who looked back at me completely bewildered. “No” he said gruffly, and then started taking some boxes out of his back seat. Oh man, should I have upgraded to Compact or Standard? Could Economy really be this bad? But just then- “Excuse me, sir?”, I heard from the direction of the Hyundai, “I’m with Enterprise! We have your car right over here!” It turns out they upgraded me two full vehicle classes- score! So the Elantra was mine, the rental agent’s shuttle was a Chrysler Pacifica that rolled up a few minutes later, and that dirty Sonic was a parts delivery guy. Oops.

Even though I have a perfectly valid credit card and a perfectly legitimate checking account, when I signed the Enterprise agent’s iPad iFelt like Preston in Blank Check pulling off one of his many bullshit “Mr. Macintosh” transactions. Like, handing over a piece of plastic and scribbling incoherently with my finger on a tablet screen = unlimited access to a brand new motor vehicle? Whaaaat? But it seriously was that easy! Plus, COVID-19 precautions meant my agent just straight up left the keys in the ignition with the car running- one less point of contagion. He was super nice though, and wiped down everything before leaving the car to me. Of course, I pretended that we were both criminals and he was cleaning his fingerprints off a getaway car before handing it over to me for disposal. I also kept thinking about the rental car scene in the awesome buddy-comedy My Fellow Americans in which a little Hyundai is used as a punchline-

Jesus, what was it with abusing rental cars in 80′s and 90′s comedies? The poor things got less than no respect.

Insane that twenty-four years later, the two brands really aren’t a whole lot different anymore. Side by side, my brand new Elantra and a Lexus IS don’t even look particularly dissimilar from one another, save for the latter one’s more pronounced gaping O face. Even with a more staid design, the Hyundai certainly doesn’t at all appear notably goofier or cheaper in comparison.

Once inside, the Elantra seemed like a nice enough place. I went to grab a CD out of the Jetta (Yes, like a grandpa I still listen to compact discs in the car, don’t judge) and then realized upon closer inspection that the Elantra didn’t even have a CD slot. Since I couldn’t understand the deal with the satellite radio- it seemed to me like the previous renter had only activated five stations, and they were all Catholic talk radio stations- I just defaulted to my favorite local FM channel. Whenever I’ve been given a rental car in the past, I compulsively have to see how loud the volume on the stereo will go before it starts hurting my ears. And I’m happy to report that the Elantra was capable of boosting “High” by The Cure to an acceptably window-shaking volume. With that important business out of the way, I could see what else was up with this car. It had a sportshift kinda gear box, I guess Hyundai’s is called SHIFTRONIC®.

I messed around with it, it seemed responsive. Downshifts really did slow the car considerably, and upshifts seemed to make it go faster, but I don’t know, my foot was also on the gas, so maybe it was just a placebo effect? Either way, I’m a big fan of manumatics- it’s always good to look down and see the little S and the plus/minus. It’s a welcome bonus touch, like when a deli sandwich comes with a pickle. Even if you’re never going to want or use that pickle, it’s just nice someone made the effort.

Next, I needed to push this “Drive Mode” button and see what that did. Sadly, hitting it did not cause toothpicks to dispense from the sun visor and “Nightcall” by Kavinsky to boom over the sound system, lame. But, instead, it pulled up this dope TRON-esque graphic of the Elantra on the touch screen-

I just love it when digital renderings of cars appear on their dash screens. Second only to visual equalizers, they’re my favorite completely unnecessary yet supremely cool thing that a display can offer me. The fun cartoon in the Elantra explained that I had the choice of three modes- Smart, Normal and Sport. The Catholic talk radio renter had been driving it in Normal, no surprise there. I was on the highway at this point, so I decided to get crazy and punch it into Sport. And believe it or not, it made a huge difference! I once drove a Mini Cooper S with a manual, and while Elantra Sport Mode certainly wasn’t that vivacious, it was much, much more fun than Elantra Normal or Elantra Smart. Okay, full disclosure- I didn’t even bother to check out Elantra Smart- I spent too many years driving a Prius to care to see what the “nerd setting” felt like- I can imagine vividly, thanks.

It wasn’t until I arrived home that I even bothered to see what the key situation was. Like I said, they were theoretically in it, as the engine was on, but not until pulling up near my house did I think to make sure that they were actually in the car. They were though, dangling from an ignition cylinder the way car keys are supposed to. I myself hate proximity fobs, push starts and such- they make me feel too disconnected. I have too many years of the muscle memory of my fingers gripping a physical car key, turning it, and feeling the vibration of the engine starting to ever get used to anything else. To me, that sensation also turns a key in my brain, and once that’s turned, it is like “Okay, we’re operating a car now, pay attention”. Without that ritual, I can’t focus on my driving quite the same way. I would imagine it would be similarly disorienting if suddenly all cigarettes just came magically lit right out of the pack, long time smokers would say “What the hell? I enjoy the act of flicking my Zippo, that’s part of the whole thing!” You know? Lucky for me, the Hyundai had keys-keys, albeit surprisingly budget looking ones-

My friend’s mom had a 2004 Elantra that he’d borrow and I’m fairly certain the keys for that thing looked almost identical. A quick Google search proved me right.

C’mon Hyundai! This thing was a two-thousand and twenty! And it wasn’t even the base model. Not even a switchblade? Or a buttons-built-into-the-top-of-the-key type deal? Nope. Key and separate fob, 1995 style. Oh well. Since I’m on furlough at the moment, I didn’t really have anywhere I needed to go, so I just left the Hyundai to sit until the Jetta was ready. When I got word that the VW was all put back together, I headed back into the countryside in the Elantra.

Enhance! It’s hard to tell, but that’s a genuine Passat W8 all-wheel-drive wagon in front of me.

When I got closer, I noticed that it was full of yard work equipment, and getting pretty beat looking. Sitting behind it at a red light, I noticed the two young guys in it were rocking out to music. It was warm out that day, so since we both had our windows down I could immediately recognize Kid Rock’s “Cowboy” slapping through the Passat’s Monsoon speakers. The two guys nodded along with it enthusiastically for a few moments before starting to laugh and changing tracks on either a mix CD or a Spotify playlist or whatever. Ohhhh, they were rocking out to it ironically. The plot thickened. If it was a mix CD, were they driving a borrowed car and laughing at someone’s taste, as my friends and I did when we commandeered a dad’s Lincoln LS and found “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins deep within the trunk mounted CD changer? Or were they a couple of Gen Zs cycling archaeologically through a Woodstock ‘99 playlist on a streaming device of some sort? I’ll never know. Anyway, bawitda-back to my story about the Elantra. I had to put a bank-busting $3.12 worth of gas into it so that it would have a full tank before dumping the keys into my mechanic’s after hours slot and happily reclaiming the Jetta. Not that there was anything wrong with the Elantra- as has been stated endlessly elsewhere, it’s truly amazing how far Hyundai has come over the last twenty or so years. I guess the rental company wasn’t as enthusiastic about the little car’s innovations or maybe they were just used to them, as I got a call from my mechanic a few days later telling me it still hadn’t been picked up. I called the rental people who assured me they would be coming to grab it, they had just been busy. Since my mechanic has plenty of land, and since my credit card had stopped being charged, I left the situation at that. I’ve heard nothing further, so for all I know the car either got collected or it’s still just sitting out there in the fields, now in use as the nicest chicken coop in all of the Amish Country. If that’s the case, those chickens are in for a real treat! Hopefully they’ll have more luck figuring out the satellite radio than I did.

Causing Chaos: Chapter 11- Gods of LS

Summary: Fakehaus screws up the Fake AH Crew’s heist plan; Gavin and Ryan are separated from the rest of the crew in their escape. Gavin takes Ryan back to he and Meg’s apartment. When they get there, Meg gets to tell Ryan that she’s gonna work on helping him to get his man. He says she really doesn’t have to, but she suggests that maybe he and Gavin should cause trouble in the city for their crew. Ryan likes the sound of that idea.

This was it, it was time for a final showdown. Ryan was feeling a lot more confident in himself after Gavin admitted he liked him back. Now, he felt like he could take on the world. It was definitely within his capabilities to take on and bring Fakehaus down, he could do it with ease. If he let his god-side out, it could only take any hour. But, he knew that he couldn’t show is god abilities to people who didn’t know he was actually the god of death.

Sonntag and Willems raised and pointed their guns at Gavin and Ryan. “We still want to know how you two escaped,” Sonntag demanded. Gavin began giggling in response.

“What’s so funny? the hell are you laughing about!?”

Gavin placed a hand over his mouth as he continued to giggle. “We have out ways,” he snickered. Ryan gave a sly smirk underneath his mask, in response.

“Well, if you two were planning on trying to escape, we can’t let you leave here alive,” Willems threatened. After hearing that, Gavin’s giggle turned into a loud laughter. “What is so goddamn funny now!?”

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, but that’s preposterous!” Gavin continued to laugh.

Willem’s eyes narrowed, “And, why’s that?”

“Because, we’re all immortal,” Gavin answered, trying to catch his breath. Ryan tilted his head, surprised that Gavin would openly reveal that.

“We��ll just see about that,” Willems scoffed as he aimed his gun at Gavin and fired.

“Woah!!” Gavin yelped as he bent backwards to avoid the bullets. Both Willems and Sonntag began firing. Gavin and Ryan rushed to go hide behind one of the crates in the room.

Once they were behind a crate, Willems and Sonntag shot at the crate they were hiding behind. Ryan gentle tapped Gavin in the shoulder. “Why’d you reveal that we are immortal?” he asked.

Gavin shrugged, “Well, it’s true, isn’t it?”

“I mean, yes. But, I’m just surprised you revealed that.”

“I didn’t think you’d think it was that big of a deal.”

“I don’t care that you said that, but I remember Geoff said something about not revealing our mythological ties.”

“I didn’t say who we were, I just said we were immortal,” he explained.

“True.”

Willems and Sonntag kept on shooting. “COME OUT, COME OUT!” Willems shouted.

“YOU CAN’T HIDE FOREVR! THOSE CRATES ARE GOING TO GIVE EVENTUALLY!” Sonntag yelled.

Gavin sighed. “He’s right. Wooden crates are very destructible.”

“So, they are,” Ryan commented in agreement.

“We need to figure out how to get out of this.” Ryan raised his hand up as he was about to give a response. “And you already promised we wouldn’t use your death-god/reaper smoke, or whatever, so you can’t go back on that.”

Ryan shook his head. “Oh no, no, no. I wasn’t going to suggest that. I was actually going to suggest that we fight back.”

“And how do you suggest we do that? I don’t exactly see any,” Ryan interrupted him by snapping his fingers and waving his hand over the ground, making their weapons appear. “Right, you can do that. But I thought you were surprised that I revealed out immortality to them.”

“it’s not like they’re seeing me us any of my abilities,” Ryan replied with a wink.

One of the bullets being shot at them went through the crate. “Guess it’s time to go,” Gavin announced as he grabbed his golden gun and began shooting over the crate. Ryan grabbed his AK-47 and began shooting as well.

“DA FUCK?! WE TOOK OFF ANY WEAPONS YOU HAD ON YOU AND KEPT THAT GOLDEN GUN IN A SEPARATE ROOM! HOW THE FUCK DID YOU GET THOSE?!” Willems screamed.

“WE, HAVE, OUR, WAYS!” Ryan yelled back as he kept shooting.

There was a complete shootout happening, Fakehaus versus Ryan and Gavin. Bullets were flying, but not hitting. Gavin glanced over to Ryan as he was shooting. “Rye, why aren’t we hitting them?” he asked in concern.

“Not their time to die. Waiting for them to run out of bullets,” Ryan answered curtly.

“Can’t you make it their time to die?”

“I gave that job to Mica. I let fate decide when it’s time for someone to die.”

As they all continued to shoot, Sonntag adjusted himself. As he shifted, a bullet barely missed him, grazing his jacket. “GAH!” he yelped in shock.

Willems saw that that bullet had come from Gavin’s gun, and shot at Gavin. He hit Gavin in the shoulder. “AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!” Gavin screamed in pain. He sunk back down.

“Gavin!” Ryan exclaimed. He leant down to cradle him.

“Ha! So much for immortality!” Willems chastised.

Ryan began to shake. “It’s okay, Rye-bread. I’ll be fine,” Gavin assured him.

Ryan nodded and gently placed him back on the ground and stood up. His eyes began to glow a bright, icy blue; he was going to show them what happens when you anger a god. Willems and Sonntag began aiming at Ryan, but all bullets evaporated as they made contact.

“WE’RE SHOOTING YOU! WHY AREN’T YOU GOING DOWN!?” Sonntag yelled.

“I’ve let you guys have your fun, but playtime’s over,” Ryan announced. He spread his arms apart, are all of the bullets turned into ash.

Fakehaus’ guns stopped firing. “Da hell?” Willems asked as he pulled is clip out. He poured noting but ash out of it. “DA HELL?!” Ryan strode over to them. “How are your eyes doing that?” Willems asked as a noticed Ryan’s glowing eyes.

“Don’t worry, James. I punched him down once, so I can just do it again,” Sonntag informed Willems. He ran up and swung to punch the Vagabond again.

Ryan caught his fist before it hit and shook his head. “Tsk, tsk. That’s not gonna work, this time.” Then he grabbed Sonntag by the neck and lifted him into the air. Sonntag’s eyes blew up as he noticed the glowing eyes “WHICH ONE OF YOU SHOT MY GOLDEN BOY!?” Ryan demanded in his booming god-voice. Sonntag began shaking in fear. “WELL!!!” Sonntag shook as he pointed at Willems. Ryan, satisfied with his answer, threw Sonntag across the room.

Ryan began his march towards Willems. Since he could no longer use his gun, Willems took a running charge at him. When he was close enough, Ryan grabbed him and shoved him to the ground. Ryan then crouched to hold Willems down. Then, he reached into Willem’s chest to grab his soul. Willems’s eyes widened in far and pain. “James Willems,”

“It’s not his time, yet,” Mica’s voice rang out in Ryan’s head.

“It appears that it’s not your time to die yet,” Ryan announced. He brushed Willems’s soul with his finger as he removed his hand from his chest. “But, when it finally is your time to go, you’ve already been assigned to be a grim reaper in your afterlife. Consider yourself lucky,” Ryan stood up and stepped away, his eyes fading back to normal.

“What… was that?” Willems wheezed out. “Sorry… I killed your boyfriend,” Sonntag crawled over to Willems.

“Not quite dead yet!” Gavin shouted from across the room. “Just bleeding. And in a lot of pain.”

“Now, I’m sure Fakehaus has had a lot of fun messing around in the big leagues. I’m sure Kingpin could use you guys as allies or something. But, you best never forget, this is the Fake AH Crew’s city,” Ryan demanded.

Willems nodded and continued coughing. Sonntag looked at Willems, confused. He looked back at Ryan. “What did you to him?” he asked.

Ryan rolled his eyes. “Since you clearly weren’t listening, I’ll just say I gave him a job and gave him a taste of what’s to come.”

“What… what are you?” Willems coughed.

“I higher being. Mortals have considered themselves blessed to interact directly with some such as my one of my siblings or I.”

“Vaga, can you hurry this up. I’m still bleeding over here,” Gavin called out.

“A higher being? Who the hell do you think you are?!” Sonntag demanded.

“Me? The Fake AH Crew?” Ryan began to ask. His eyes began to glow, again. “We’re the Gods of LS.”

SOLVE THIS CRIME- Dan and Phil play: ‘Layton's Mystery Journey!’

Which I think is very cute, has great banter, cooperation, a sassy Dan, a flirty Phil, with no space between them and is definitely worth a re-watch.

I don't know how they actually feel about Johnlock. They've both referenced it before but have been kind of vague on their stance. Personally I love the show but don't ship them. Part One: [ Here ] Genre: Angst, romance, fluff. Word Count: 1055 Starship: LS!Arcann x Author (Alliance Volunteer)

It’s been a few months since I resigned from the Alliance. I rented an apartment cheap enough in Corellia, but the cost of living here is outrageous! I think I can lay low as the cities are rebuilt and repopulated, but I’m not sure I can last much longer. Can’t work because of this pregnancy… shucks, but that’s the rules here. I’ve also been so frugal in my spending and honestly, it’s starting to feel quite lonely...

I do admit I haven’t been in the best shape and condition for this child… I haven’t even checked with a doctor, but I noticed that it’s already quite big for just the start of the second trimester. Bigger than other pregnant women. Could there be something wrong with it...?

Gah, that’s it, I’m going to use my last savings to get it checked!

“The twins are developing well, but you should consider an improved diet and sleep pattern.”

Wh-twins?! Whoa! Okay, okay, the situation keep on changing so quick I can’t quite adapt just yet. The doctor gave me a recipe of supplements to redeem. Just enough credits for it here, but damn, I had to walk back home. You two don’t mind a little exercise won’t you? Mother’s good children!

Truthfully, having twins excites me. Thinking back that I haven’t been taking care of them makes me despise myself. I shouldn’t be too depressed… but how do I get healthier with a non-existent budget? Thinking too much can cause stress, and that’s bad for pregnancy. I wish there’s someone who can help. I miss the people of the Alliance!

Our memories together kept on replaying in my mind as I lay on this lounger. I know he must be really upset with me. I don’t think I deserve his forgiveness. He has always been so attentive and devoted to me, and this is how I repay him. I just… don’t want to be a burden to him! His life doesn’t have to focus on me and raising kids, no way.

My back hurts and I’m starting to feel drowsy… yawn… must be this medicine...

Hrmm… why do I feel like someone’s stroking my belly--gasp! Arcann?!

“But how--”

My heart feels like jumping out of my chest. Uh oh. He looks less than pleased. “This is what you’ve been doing?”

I can’t speak a word… I’m scared.

“Why? Why did you do this?”

“I… I just... don’t want to get in your way…” He shook his head angrily. Please don’t be mad at me--I’m so scared and tired. “How can you say that when you’re already half of my life?”

I’m so sorry… He handed me a drink and helped me up. Now I feel twice as bad. I can’t look into his eyes, and he’s still maintaining that disappointed silence. He walked towards the window.

“How did you find me?”

It took him awhile to answer my question. “The Force works in mysterious ways. I followed its will, but, more accurately...” He turned around, his face looking better now, I think h-he’s not as upset anymore? “I can sense my own flesh and blood.”

Ahh… I should have known. I even dared to assume that you might not be looking for me at all. Sigh. What was I thinking, just disappearing without notice, not even asking for his opinion and probably… probably breaking his heart? I’m so stupid! “I’m… I’m sorry…”

“Save it.”

Please, those words hurts.

“Just one question... Do I even mean something to you? Do you love me, still?”

“I do! I love you very much… but that’s two questions, again.”

Oops. He… is not amused. Oh! I got pulled into his embrace. Sigh, how I hungered for your touch, Arcann… I miss you so much.

“That’s--that’s why it’s so agonizing without your presence. Don’t do this again, understand? Don’t leave me, never again…”

I reached out to kiss him, but he wasn’t into it, so I stopped… I know, I messed up big time, I don’t deserve to be with him after all he’s done for me. I stepped back, distancing myself from the man I love. But uhh… my belly is suddenly hurting.

“What’s wrong?!”

“No, I’m fine. I--” Oh… It… hurts so much--is-is that blood?! Help… the sight of blood is weakening me. The pain quickly becomes unbearable--my feet disappeared and everything… is black?

“--she wasn’t quite healthy, and this is likely caused by a stressful event or doing a heavy duty action.”

Ahh… the lights are so bright. Did I just pass out? Room looks like a hospital ward, and that voice must be a doctor. Sigh… I feel so miserable... What a terrible Mother!

I see Arcann opening the door, surprised at seeing me awake.

“Please tell me there’s nothing wrong with the babies!”

“Don’t worry, they’re fine. I… didn’t know we’re having twins.”

I can’t help but to cry. I feel both relieved on knowing my babies are safe, and a strong hatred for myself because of my recklessness. My children paid the price…! “Forgive me. I shouldn’t have acted that way towards you.” No. Not your fault but mine! His rough fingers wiped away my tears.

“Don’t cry… We’re going home, to Zakuul,” Sob… huh? Zakuul? He then displayed a smile that I’ve longed to see, and kissed my hairline, with his hand rubbing my belly. “We’ll raise them together.”

Ahh… those words are like flowing water to my heart. But what about… “Don’t you have your duty to the Alliance? I don’t want--”

“Who says I can’t do them both? Don’t you remember what I said? I want to care for you and I’m never leaving your side no matter what happens. I want to see my children grow with a Father’s love… unlike me. Let me love them, and let me love you...”

Oh, Arcann… I feel my blood rushing through my veins, and your words made me weak as hell. Warm tears resumed its course on my cheeks. Sigh... I just wanna be with you and stop anchoring myself with all these doubt. “I’m sorry…”

“I forgive you. Let’s put this past us and move forward, shall we?”

Yes! I nodded and reached out for his lips again. It’s been too long without kissing him. I love you so much…!

Boy this is a good one & I don't know what to do Next! I went with the Lizard insurance even though they are Snakes and don't want to pay for any Claims! It started in 2010 with my truck, I took it to where they told me and they only paid for cosmetic damage even though there was a lot more including my steering was so bad I had to stop driving it. I wanted to take it to a shop that I had my truck lowered which because of we're I lived and the shop was I couldn't drive it, 65 miles. I had AAA tow it to my new house and from there after 2 years of not driving my truck they agreed to have it towed 7 miles to the shop. Well I told the claims adjuster what was wrong, he told me I needed to write a list and drop it off at the shop so I just got my Chopper back from the shop and went down to where my truck was a wrote a list of what I thought was wrong. Here is where the first of my troubles started, on the way home I am riding on the freeway and a truck to the right of me had a blow out and a Giant tire flew right in front of me, I couldn't do anything other than to run it over. It happened so fast, I hit it and made a brown spot in my shorts, jk. I then noticed smoke coming from my Chopper, it was Bad so I pulled over and noticed that my tail light was knocked off and caused some damage and the bold that holds my tail light on came off and rubbed on my new Avon 250 tire and Melted the side wall. I was able to ride home and once I saw all the damage I knew it was a problem. I called the Lizard and made a claim. The claims adjuster called me and said he will be out that Saturday, so saturday came and I never heard from him, I had his number and left a message, so this went on until Thursday and I called the lizard again and they transferred me to the AH boss and I left him a voicemail. Well I didn't hear from him as a few more days went by so Called back and got his boss's boss. The next day I got a nasty voicemail from the claims adjuster bitching at me. I called customer service and told them he went off on me and they can hear my voicemail too but no one listened to me. So I was told to call his boss, I said then I don't want this claims adjuster to come out, I don't want to speak to him or have anything to do with him. They were so sorry and said they totally understand and later that day the big boss called and I told him I hadn't heard from the adjuster other than a nasty voicemail and I want someone else to come out and not him. The boss said I understand and he will take care of it. So two days later the rude claims adjuster showed up at my house to take care of the claim, I was shocked it was the AHole I didn't want to come out but his bosses boss told him he better get out there and take care of this. Well once he was there, he wasn't as nice as he had been and couldn't be more rude than he was. I told him what had happened and the Damage, all he said was Prove it, Prove it, Over and over with everything I showed him. It caused major damage to my shocks and front forks, he laughed and said they are designed to roll over things and that it couldn't happen from hitting a tire in the road, well it can because that's exactly what happened. He was such a AHole I said, why did you even come out, did you just come here to be a @ss Hole or what!! He didn't say a word and just left. They paid out just a little for damages to the paint, tail light and the tire. The tired was new and cost 500 but they paid me 100 bucks for it. Mean while my truck is at the shop still to get looked over for the damage and they didn't pay a dime and the worst part was when I got the truck back from being towed, I started after the tow truck drive let it down and it sounded funny, then I smelt burning plastic so I opened the hood and my entire air intake system was gone!!! The burning was th vacuum hoses laying on the headers. I called the shop where my truck was and they said they are not sure what's going on but to call back. Well they are no longer in business and I lost all that so I called and opened a claim, now they are investigating me over this. So I have damage from 2010 that has never been fixed, my bike isn't right and someone had stolen my Volant cold air intake that's not being taken care of. What do I do? This is BS, I don't deserve this from my insurance Company and for them to treat me like they have, not pay out the claims. I needed my truck smoged Dec 31st so because all the parts to have it smogged weren't there I couldn't have it down and I have a ton of late fees with the DMV in California. Auto Insurance?

Why cant we have insurance on Auto Repairs. Where we pay a co-pay (like health insurance) or deductible and the auto shops are regulated by the insurance companies. We would pay more for cars that need more repair. Wouldnt it make automakers more interested in making a better car?

Due to an illness/ disability in our family, despite having health insurance, we still owe thousands in medical bills. Those that would not work with us turned them into collection. They now show on our credit report. Despite being insured for both our auto insurance and our home insurance for 20+ year with the same insurance company, we got a notice saying our auto insurance had gone up hundreds of dollars per year based on a credit report they obtained. We have never had an accident, ticket, etc. and the amount automatically comes out of our checking each month. Plus, last year, prior to this, they switched us to a preferred group within the company and gave us a discount when we threatened to switch. How can I find out which insurance companies base your insurance rates on your credit report and or score? Will they tell you outright? This is the first I have ever known that our company did this and was wondering if all of them do it, or do you just know about it when you get a notice like we did? I get their reasoning but it seems like such a rip off when so many are in our boat- insured but with insurance that is starting to pay less and less and cost more. Plus, they have our checking account and if we were not to pay, they wouldn't be responsible for us if we had an accident anyway. Seems like a double whammy to me. Can anyone help?""

So, my 2010 Sentra (Brand New less than 6K miles) was rearended. It's been hell dealing with the other guy's insurance company- never return calls, no followup, etc..... My car is back looking great except for minor details (issue with the trunk) which I hope to work out with the shop. They are giving me a low ball offer on diminished value and I live in a state that grants diminished value Here are my questions: 1) Is there a simple calculator that can be used to calculate diminshed value? Insurance on a car lease?

My insurance guy gave me below basic coverage on a lease which requires something like 100,000/300,000/100,000 but he did basic full coverage(something cheaper like 10/20/10) In the contract it states i must have 100/300/100 as the requirement but the insurance guy who does insurance for a lot of people says lower coverage should work. I just added it on and it's fine, so the insurance (progressive) sent me a letter saying I have to pay extra for adding a 3rd vehicle but nothing about the coverage amount. THINKS to Think

THINKS to Think is a new Wednesday feature for the reimagined Bad at Sports.

Who better to inspire imagination than Dr. Seuss? Oh, the THINKS you can Think! is classic Seuss. I discovered it last Christmas when my brother gave a copy to his friend’s son–and quickly bought one for myself.

The book’s title popped into my head after a B@S meeting when I volunteered to take on Wednesday as the weekly slot for “think pieces.” Happily for readers and myself, Keeley Haftner and Meg Santisi signed up to join me in writing and recruiting for THINKS to Think.

Our new series opens with my conversation with Luis Sahagún. Together we think about the forms and colors, characters and legends of the imaginary world embodied in his current show.

A conversation with Lise McKean

LM: You’ve talked about your background and its influence on your work in interviews and artistic statements. Could you talk about what comes to mind about your own story as we’re sitting here in the gallery surrounded by your recent work?

LS: A lot of times when I write a statement about my work, I say I use art to connect with my family. But what does that really mean? For example, what does that say about my relationship with my dad? When I was at the residency in Roswell, I decided to use art, objects, and visual culture to find an intersection or way to connect with him in a way I hadn’t done before through art.

I started paying attention to the objects at our house that he had collected. I had taken pictures of them before I went to Roswell. They’re little objects—cows and horses are next to the Statue of Liberty next to a Native American statue next to a dream catcher. He takes a lot of time curating the objects, placing them around the house. I was interested in that gesture.

They’re more than objects. They connect to his past life in Mexico. They had a lot of land in Mexico and raised cows. The objects carried memories of a life from his past. I thought by understanding that gesture, I could find a moment or way of connecting with my dad.

Hunch [and friends]

LM: Can you talk about the thinking and feeling that went into your exploration of his objects?

LS: I was interested in the gesture. For instance, my dad’s Facebook profile. He started posting photos of objects from his collection. Most specifically, the panther. His profile showed a panther. Then his friend created the image of super colorful panther that has my dad’s face imposed on it.

He grew up on the farm and never went to school. He learned to read and write as an adult. My mom went to school up to third grade. My mom is infatuated with fish.

LM: Did she grow up near the ocean?

LS: Yes, she grew up by the Pacific Ocean. Everything is fish—glass fish, metal fish, ceramic fish. She has fish tank in the bathroom. She doesn’t even know why. She pinned a stuff Nemo to the bathroom wall. It took me a while to realize that my parents’ relationship to their collections is as innocent and playful as a child’s.

The Child of Two Bloods

LM: Did this realization come for being away from home and the distance created by being at Roswell?

LS: Yes. And being at a distance, I also realized that our home was an embodiment of Mexico. But everything outside of our home was different. They were two completely different worlds.

LM: What do your parents say when you try to talk to your parents about their objects in the house? Do they see their objects as collections?

LS: My dad is a storyteller. He tells stories about being a farmer. I know that they’re his memories. My dad’s mom will tell me more specific things. The objects are tools to remember their past lives. My mom doesn’t talk about herself.

LM: So these objects carry memory. Do they embody feelings of loss and longing? Of feeling homesick?

LS: The memories are of the past. It’s not idealized. It’s the past. My parents are both retired. They could go back to live in Mexico. But their life now is here. My mom doesn’t want to leave her kids and grandkids. I see the homesickness in her mom. My parents’ world in Mexico is in the past. They left it behind. But when the phone call comes with news that another cousin died, they cry as if they saw the cousin just yesterday. Another part of them is gone. It’s a new beginning here. A whole new family origin is here. My nieces and sisters won’t go to Mexico.

The Lonely Moon Rides High

LM: With those ideas floating in your mind, can you tell me about how the work is about mythologies of a new place—the new tale of family origin here in the US?

LS: I knew I wanted to make the work more representational and to understand my dad. When I was a kid and wanted to play with my friends, my dad made me work in the garden. He wanted me to know how to grow food. He thought every man should be able to grow food to feed his family. In graduate school and seeing the moon all the time as I lay in bed. I had the leisure to lay and look at it. I started falling in love again with nature. On top of that wonder and reconnection with nature, I went to Roswell.

LM: That forced to farming work as a kid pushed you away from nature. But now you’re coming to a new appreciation of nature—and of father.

LS: That’s a good connection. My dad is a farmer and Roswell is a farming community. Here in Chicago, you’re cut off from nature. You’re in the shadow of skyscrapers. Living in DeKalb and Roswell I could see the sunset, the moon, the stars. Seeing the moon in DeKalb sparked a desire to get wonder back in my life.

LM: It thought it was very dry in Roswell. How can they farm there?

LS: They have to use a lot of water to grow crops in Roswell. It’s sad to see.

LM: What did you propose for the Roswell residency?

LS: In graduate school I focused on materials and materialism. I wanted to be in a community and put this interest in materialism into coherent body of work.

LM: Most people who have heard of Roswell think of UFOs and aliens.

LS: Yes. There’s an alien museum in Roswell [International UFO Museum and Research Center]. About 50,000 people live there. The museum is on a strip with stores selling alien objects. The McDonalds looks like alien spaceship. The museum feels like DIY place. It feels ridiculous to day but I was intrigued by the people who really believe. There’s a sign that says, “If you came to Roswell for the truth, call” and it gives a number.

Roswell has a week-long aliens [UFO] festival. They bring in people to give talks. There’s a movie about a man who believes without a doubt that he was abducted by aliens. I’m fascinated about being so lost in something—to blindly believe in something other people find completely ridiculous.

LM: Were people evangelical about their belief in aliens and UFOs?

LS: That man in the movie wanted to talk to others about his experience of alien abduction. Most people in the audience already were believers. They were interested in learning about aliens and he had answers for them.

LM: I’ve been thinking about Dr. Seuss lately. Works of yours such as Hunch and The Rise of a New King seem almost Seussian. Or even alien-like. Did being in Roswell, with images of aliens as part of your visual field, and meeting believers in aliens come to affect your visual vocabulary?

LS: I can’t say no. At the same time, I wasn’t thinking about aliens. I knew what I was making were fish, but I didn’t want them to look like fish. I was more after an emotion. I was exploring how I could use the material of concrete to play with textures, context, and create a feeling. The fact that the fish are cyclopic or one-eyed is really important. My mom has been really sick for past the 10 years and at one point she almost died. She has a heart condition and after going under anesthesia she lost one of her eyes. It caused her a lot of suffering. When I was making them, I didn’t know why these fish have one eye.

Don

LM: We’ve talked about some of the ideas and feelings underneath your work. Let’s turn to their materiality. They’re substantial objects, yet not forms typically associated with concrete. I’m thinking of concrete and cement as a material that’s poured into rectilinear forms, for example sidewalks and cinder blocks. Your concrete forms in this show aren’t at all rectilinear. They’re almost amorphous, and seem to retain the fluidity of concrete, that is, they suggest the mutable form that concrete takes before it solidifies.

What other works in this show are made with concrete?

LS: In addition to Hunch and Rise of a New King (joint compound, drywall and concrete), the other works in this show with concrete and other materials are Baby, Don, The Clouds Spirit, and A Lost Conversation with an Old Angel. The angel is my grandma.

When I was in grad school, I liked exploring my own resourcefulness. That led me down the concrete path. I remember a grad school professor saying that plaster is a poor man’s marble. I’m using concrete as a poor man’s clay. I love concrete’s gray color. I used it in this way because I have this weird thing in my studio that I like to build relationships with my objects. I build relationship with what the material can and cannot do. I want to make sure I build with materials without asking them to do too much. It makes sense. Concrete has its own alchemy: combine water and powder and it becomes very moldable and dries fast. I don’t feel like I’m asking the concrete to do anything it can’t do.

A Lost Conversation with an Old Angel

LM: Does your familiarity with concrete come from working with it on construction jobs?

LS: Yes, I’ve poured concrete. I wasn’t a skilled laborer. You know the Ozinga trucks? I pushed wheel barrows filled with cement to build interior floors for restaurants and other interiors.

LM: Moving and pouring concrete is demanding physical work. It sounds like you earned your understanding of the properties of concrete through hard labor. Does the Spanish word bracero in the title of your show refer to your experience of working as an unskilled laborer?

LS: Bracero means working class. For example, a bracero can be a concrete worker, farmworker, or steelworker. Mexicans were brought to Chicago Heights to work in the steel mills in the 1940s through the Bracero Project. They came over a period of time. My grandfathers on my mom’s and dad’s sides were brought by the Bracero Project.

LM: So the word bracero is personal beyond your own work experience. It also relates to how your family got to Chicago Heights.

LS: In grad school I was part of a history project that was trying to find and document the stories of Braceros still living in the U.S. The project reminded me that my own family was Bracero.

LM: So Bracero is about your family history, your experience as a bracero, and bringing both of those strands into your art practice. Are there other strands?

LS: That’s right. My interest in materials, Bracero connections on both sides of my family, and my work in construction.

LM: Let’s look at specific works now, starting with The Words of Silent Ancestors? This scale of this work is mural-like. Its panels and overall horizontal length evoke east Asian screen paintings. What led you to that format? And what about those visceral materials in the lower part? And do you have anything more to say about the panther image?

The Words of Silent Ancestors

LS: At the time I was making this work I was moving between working in studio and writing the mythology. The story and characters were important to me to tell. I attempted to do it with poetry. That’s a panther-ish figure. I realized I made the panther character different in each work. But the all the panthers have two common and distinguishing features. They are saber-toothed and have pointy ears. It’s the same with the fish. It’s the same with fish character but each one looks different. If I was talking about same character, it would never look the same:

LM: That idea for your panther and fish characters reminds me of the figure in mythology and folktales of the shape-shifter. It appears in many different cultures. A scholar named Stith Thompson created the Motif-Index of Folk-literature. It’s fascinating to see how motifs appear in far flung places.

LS: In The Words of Silent Ancestors I wanted to create a painting that functioned as a painting. By that I mean it’s a window to another world. I wanted to make it appropriate to another world so I used simple, one-point perspective. It’s not too logical. It could be sunset or sunrise. The light and colors don’t have to make sense. In my world these things don’t t have to make sense.

LM You’re making a world that has its own approach to making sense—one that’s not governed by logical and visual conventions.

LS: Exactly. And this was a fun project. The idea of one eye appears in different ways. Some of my stories treat the moon as a one eye. The panther’s eye is the moon looking at us in the “concrete world.”

LM: I like the way concrete is both literal and metaphorical at the same time in your work. By making images with concrete, you make your imaginary world concrete for viewers. I’d like to hear more about what’s going on in The Words of Silent Ancestors.

LS: The panther has its mouth open. The long form projecting from the upper to the lower panel is the panther’s lower lip. The panther’s breath is the arcing form coming down on the left. Its one eye is like full moon. There’s abstraction in foreground. The wave is cresting. I use stucco to give it dimensionality.

LM: What is in stucco.

LS: It’s made from soil and fibers. Stucco is a new material for me to work with. In Roswell stucco is a very common building material.

LM: How did you apply the stucco to make the waves?

LS: It’s a combination of stucco, silicone caulk, resin, foam, and acrylic. I dyed the stucco blue, and painted parts of it.

LM: What’s going on with the palette? It’s a distinctive range and combination of colors.

LS: I don’t want to get too art history but I took from Frank Stella the idea that all color is arbitrary. I just line up my buckets and start painting. I know what colors I buy but when I approach the canvas I just start. It’s intuitive. If I don’t like it, I repaint to change the color.

LM: I ask because I’ve spent time in artists’ studios where they are very precise and particular about color. They have color tests and samples pinned up on the wall. I guess some painters are more colorists than others.

LS: I’m not a colorist. I use it for feeling and depth.

LM: Can you say something about the forms in the painting’s upper left?

LS: It’s a mountain cave. I used gesso instead of white. The painting is on cement board, a material typically used for attaching bathroom and kitchen tile. It’s more resistant to moisture than drywall. Each panel weighs about 20 pounds and I made a u-channel to attach them in the gallery.

LM : When we were having lunch before the interview, you mentioned the upcoming performance you’re planning for your Bolt Residency. The Words of Silent Ancestors could be an excellent backdrop for the dance you described.

LS: I was thinking about that too in restaurant.

LM: They Had Young Hearts, but Large Halos is the piece you chose for the gallery window. Its large circular form makes frames a view into the gallery and the entire show. It’s like a smaller window placed inside a larger one. It looks like it’s made of 2 by 4s.

LS: It’s the last piece I made for this show.

LM: The 2 x 4s bring to mind the construction work of braceros.

LS: I used to build wood trusses for homes. They’re sold pre-made and used for the top of buildings and floors. I worked at company called Best Homes building trusses. It was the worst job of my life.

LM: What made it so bad?

LS: It was such hard work. You had to work outside in rain shine. The trusses are built on huge conveyor belts that move from inside to outside, where they’re loaded on trucks. The workers have to hammer by hand. The pieces of wood are squeezed together as they’re moved along the conveyor belt. The workers have to hammer them together and then put clamps on them.

I worked there during the summer during college. When I went back to my dorm room in the fall I wrote down the name of the company to remind me to study so I wouldn’t have to work there after college. The work was so painful. You wake up in the night with a fever. When a new person came we would place bets on whether they would quit before lunch. OSHA finally shut the company down company because of violations.

LM: So bracero is the tough and repetitive work of lifting, carrying, pounding. Of working in heat, rain, and cold. Work that’s physically painful and wears out your body.

LS: Yes, and to survive that kind of work you have to be very creative. You have to figure out how to move trusses with hammer to reduce the effort and strain.

LM: For braceros, necessity is mother of invention. They need to minimize the toll of work on the body.

LS: I’ve seen braceros who are super-creative. There are videos online of albanil the work of coating bricks and cinderblocks with cement, paint or whitewash that show amazing, labor-saving techniques.

LM: In this interview we’ve talked about the work in this show you made during your Roswell residency. Right now you have a Bolt residency with the Chicago Artists Coalition. Can you give a preview of what’s coming next?

LS: I’m creating a fictional ritual that involves sculpture, sound, and dance. The idea came from my creation mythology that combines many stories into one. Instead of continuing to develop the mythology, I want to continue to tell the same story over and over in different forms. I want to tell a similar story with dance. The show will be on July 21 at the Bolt space.
