Dog Days Of Summer (2023)
Genre: Youth, Drama
Plot:
In the summer of 2002, South Korea hosts the World Cup and Yi Joon moves in with his aunt and uncle in Daegu. Yi Joon and his new classmates navigate friendship, family, and growing up over the hot summer.
Cast & Crew:
Moon Woo Jin as Kim Yi Joon
Park Seo Kyung as Han Yeo Reum
Supporting cast - Choi Hyun Jin, Kim Ji Sung, Jeong Hee Tae, Heo Dong Won, Kim Kwang Gyu, Kim Ji Won, Go Seong Bo, Lee Joo Won, Jung Yi Rang, Jeon Sok Chan
Director - Jang Min Sik
Screen Writer - Choi Yi Kyung
Music:
The music felt pretty unobtrusive but on closer inspection the backing music was a mix of music of the time (2001-2002) mixed with some nice instrumentals. The featured music includes: 착각의 늪 - 박고테 프로 젝트, 떠나가라 - QOQ, Please Summer! - 인디고(Indigo), 비몽 - 코요태 (KOYOTE), and 백전무패 - 클릭비 (Click-B).
Awards: Best Young Actor (Moon Woo Jin) - KBS Drama Awards 2023
Overall:
This drama special tells the story of Kim Yi Joon, a 14 year old boy in the summer of 2002 who is moving from Anyang to Daegu to live with his aunt and uncle. At first he seems like your standard sullen teen but as the drama special goes on you peel back the layers and find out his story.
As you watch the drama special you feel all of the hurt and pain piling up on this young boy and it’s quite heartbreaking. Watching him go through all the hardships wrung a surprising amount of tears from me. But he is resilient and it’s a wholesome and heartwarming coming of age story of finding your place in the world.
Moon Woo Jin has been in a lot of productions since 2017, most recently Castaway Diva and The Atypical Family but this drama special is one of his first leading roles. He won the young actor award for his performance here and it's not surprising based on his performance. It was nice to see a cast of talented young people given a chance to shine.
As well as Min Jun’s coming of age story, we get a glimpse of classmate Han Yeo Reum’s life. She also moved to Daegu in recent years and has adjusted to life there. At first she’s an adversary but when forced to work together and secrets are shared they form a bond. Like all her classmates she too is struggling through puberty and the hot hot Daegu summer.
Korean dramas love the backdrop of their 2002 world cup to tell a story and I liked the way this drama special incorporated it into the story. Including footage from the various games and how it highlighted that Yi Joon was much more interested in basketball than soccer!
Overall, I thought this was a well done drama special. I enjoyed the coming of age story set in the early 2000s. If you like youth dramas such as Racket Boys or coming of age stories in general this drama special is definitely worth a watch.
Rating: 9/10

i got exactly 1 rebog👍🏻 saying "please do" (thankies smiley face emoji) so here we go
Hyuna is one of the ways to romanize this name right here ->현아
another (less common from my understanding) romanization of this name is Hyeona or Hyeon-a
like most korean given names, this one has two syllables, the first one being 현 (hyeon) and the second being 아 (a)
so the hyun is one whole syllable while the a is its own
and there is a difference in pronunciation between 현 and 휸 (for our purposes i'll differentiate them with hyeon and hyoon respectively)
ㅓ and ㅕ are eo and yeo respectively. eo is sometimes also written like uh or even ə (ex: 허윤진 as Huh Yunjin can also be Heo Yunjin)
that extra stroke on ㅕ just adds a y to the syllable. so ㅓ(eo) becomes ㅕ(yeo),ㅏ(a) becomes ㅑ(ya) and so forth
so yeah her name is Hyeon-ah if you, y'know, pronounce it right
also quickly: 수아 (Su-a), 미지 (Mi-ji), 이반 (I-ban), 틸 (Til), 현아 (Hyeon-ah), 루카 (lu-ka)
also if i hear someone pronouncing Hyuna like you would call africa's most common large carnivore im throttling you into the sun
bout to sit down the entire non korean speaking alnst fandom and give y'all a lesson in korean pronunciation because if i have to hear one more person calling her "hyoo na" im going to walk on glass shards

So guys, I've wanted to do this kind of list since a lot of time ago, of the kdramas that from my point of view are underrated, and I think more people who loves kdramas should give them a chance and watch them, so here is the first part:
1. Hogu's love aka Fool's love.
Ho Goo has a twin sister Ho Gyeong. He has tried to pass the civil service examination, but has failed for 7 years. He also has never dated in his life. One day, he meets Do Hee. She was the most popular girl back in his high school days. She is a member of the national swimming team and has a burning desire to win. She also talks like one of the guys. They spend the night together, but the next morning he finds a baby next next to him and Do Hee is gone. After Ho Goo meets Do Hee again, he becomes involved in a complicated romantic relationship and a dangerous friendship.

2. The tale of nokdu aka Mung bean chronicles (one of my faves).
Jeon Nok Du is a man with extraordinary ambition to experience the big, wide world. With looks, brains, and athletic abilities, he is the epitome of perfection. After being swept up in an incident, he disguises himself as a woman to join a mysterious all-woman community and meets Dong Dong Joo.
Dong Dong Joo is a prickly gisaeng trainee. Along with her fiery personality, she is clumsy, has absolutely no sense of rhythm, and is tone-deaf, which makes all of her peers look after her. However, she is skilled with her hands as she can make anything if given the right tools. Unable to stand injustice, she speaks her mind.
Due to this fact, Jeon Nok Du ends up saving Dong Dong Joo from a dangerous situation. After that, she suddenly becomes Jeon Nok Du’s adopted daughter and he decides to live in the widow village for 1 year.

3. Clean with passion for now.
Jang Sun Gyeol has wealth and good looks but suffers from severe mysophobia. He is obsessed with cleaning and even owns his own cleaning company. However, he meets a carefree and untidy girl named Gil Oh Sol after she enters his company as a new employee.
Oh Sol has worked all sorts of part-time jobs while striving for a full-time job and does not have the luxury to date or be clean. She gave up on being neat after facing the tough reality of the world and is known for always wearing her trademark tracksuit. But she has a bright personality and does not mind getting dirty. With the help of Oh Sol, Sun Gyeol faces his mysophobia and also falls in love with her.

4. Live up to your name aka Deserving of the name.
Heo Im, who is born in a concubine family in Joseon era and has very outstanding medical skill, is frustrated about his career as he fails to climb to higher positions in the government because of his background. By accident, he travels through time to modern Seoul 400 years later and meets modern doctor Yeon Gyung. Thinking that Heo Im is weird, she hopes to get rid of Heo Im but instead, they travel back to Joseon together again.

5. Live On (Just finished one or two weeks ago) if you want to watch a short kdrama, this one it only has 8 episodes.
Live On” is set to be a romance story that follows the lives of Baek Ho Rang (Jung Da Bin), who is at the top of food chain at her high school where being trendy and popular brings higher social status, and Go Eun Taek (Minhyun), a perfectionist who is the head of the broadcasting club. Despite being at the top of the social pyramid, she only has one true friend as she believes she is the center of the universe and looks down on others. Meanwhile, Go Eun Taek is in charge of the school’s broadcasting club and is someone who is sensitive, detail oriented, can sometimes be irritable, and plans everything out perfectly. 6. Dinner Mate.
This drama is about a young woman going through a rough breakup with a longtime boyfriend she’s still in love with, and a young man who’s a serial dater and kind of tired of relationships. They both like to eat out but dislike having to go to nice restaurants alone, and they happen to meet while waiting to be seated at a restaurant, each of them alone. The hostess mistakes them for a couple and offers them a couple special, which prompts them to sit together and end up having dinner together. After their first unexpected meeting, they meet and have dinner together weekly. That’s how they strike up an unusual friendship where they get together just to eat out, and over multiple dinners, they open up to each other about their relationship troubles and grow closer.

7. Oh my venus.
This is a drama about two Childhood friends meet again in their adulthood and find themselves making a bet on a “diet challenge”. The story focuses on their journey of searching for love and health.
Kang Joo Eun meets Kim Yeong Ho, who agrees to be her personal trainer to help her get healthier. As they work on her physical transformation, they both discover they have feelings for each other. As they grow closer, they heal each other's emotional wounds and fall in love.

8. Cheat on me if you can ( Is still on emission, there's only two episodes left).
For her work, best-selling crime author Yeo Joo researches how to make a murder look like an accidental death. Next to her is her younger husband, Woo Sung, who is a family man and works as a divorce lawyer. Woo Sung still thinks he's a sexy, attractive partner, and lives on with his wonderful marriage life. However, lately, Yeo Joo, who would rather be a widow than a divorcee, starts finding some of his behavior suspicious. Could he be cheating on her? Could Woo Sung possibly be enjoying a thrilling affair behind her back? Yeo Joo tells it straight: If he cheats, he will die.

9. The beauty inside (one of my faves).
Han Se Kye is a top actress, also known as a troublemaker, with many rumors around her. To others, her life appears as a mystery, when in fact she is faced with a strange occurrence where she must change into a different body and new identity for one week a month. She encounters Seo Do Jae, a brilliant man who is an executive at an airline company. He seems to have it all: a perfect appearance, knowledge, and a good job; but he has a secret too. He suffers from Prosopagnosia, the inability to recognize faces. However, he manages to hide this from the world, every day he makes an effort to remember people by their personalities.
Seo Do Jae's life begins to change when he meets Han Se Kye. She is the only person whose face he can recognize. But with Han Se Kye's constant disappearance and change how long can she keep her secret?.

The one who bears the most power can protect the least
Moon Embracing the Sun (episodes 1 - 20)
This show was the stepping stone for me in watching period dramas and supernatural themes. I used to fear that the application of historical ideologies might turn me off period dramas, and supernatural themes may come off as awkward and cringe-worthy. However, my concerns quickly disappeared. Moon Embracing the Sun brought to life so many strong female characters and the supernatural themes were all necessary to the plot and delivered well. The characters were complex and dimensional and while the plot is primarily heavy, comic interactions between certain relationships ensured a good balance to allow audiences to breathe. But I think the highlight of the show for me were the younger counterparts of the main characters who were all so captivating to watch and since then, have grown as actress/ors with their own shows.
But this post is not about any of the above (although, I could dedicate a post to the strong female characters because good or evil, they are worth talking about).
Moon Embracing the Sun is, of course, a period drama revolving around a love story and a political war against the backdrop of the Joseon dynasty. But I want to put focus this time on those who are perceived to be the most powerful, despite actually being the most vulnerable.
King Sung-jo (played by Ahn Nae-sung) was a wise king who greatly loved his family. However, despite holding the most powerful position in Joseon, King Sung-joo was powerless when it came to his own family.
From the very first episode, the brother’s king is murdered and wrongfully accused of treason against the king. However, despite King Sung-jo knowing that he wasn’t betrayed by his brother, he was forced to stay silent as his brother’s honour is destroyed and his brother’s lover is tortured and executed. As king, Sung-jo is burdened by the need to protect his throne in order to fulfill his duties to his nation. And with that obligation comes the burden of protecting the Queen Dowager’s dark secret even if it came at a price of his brother’s honour.
12 years later, King Sung-jo did not have the power to intervene with the selection of his son’s future betrothed even when he knew that the selection was manipulated by those who wanted to take control. Only with the power given to him by the Sungkyunkwan scholars was he enabled to be able to control the selections to ensure that only the rightful person would become the Crown Princess. But when the rightful Crown Princess Heo Yeon-woo (Kim Yoo-jung) was dishonourably removed from the palace due to the selfish schemes of the Queen Dowager, King Sung-jo once again turned a blind eye, even when he knew that his feigning of ignorance effectively sacrificed the family who has remained loyal to him and sentenced them to live in disgrace.
The King once again is forced to put his duties to his nation ahead of his desire to protect his son from losing his love, his desire to protect the rightful Crown Princess, and his desire to protect his loyal servants.
But perhaps the most painful from all King Sung-jo lost because of his power, is the loss of his first son, Prince Yang-myung (Lee Tae-ri) . Prince Yang-myung, born first but forever second to his younger half-brother, Lee Hwon, lives to gain his father’s acknowledgment. However, in order for the King to protect his sons and protect Lee Hwon as the future king, King Sung-jo sacrifices his relationship with Yang-myung to ensure stability within the nation he serves.
King Sung-jo protected the dark secrets of his family and made sacrifices until his death because he thought it was the right thing to do to serve his nation.
And King Sung-jo’s powerlessness as the King is reflected onto his successor. As Crown Prince and then King, Lee Hwon (played by Yeo Jin-goo and Kim Soo-hyun) struggles with protecting all those important to him: from his childhood love, the Crown Princess Heo Yeon-woo, his loyal teacher, Scholar Heo Yeom, his brother, Prince Yang-myung, and his new love, Shaman Weol. Instead of holding the power as Crown Prince and King to protect his loved ones, it was they who protected him instead.
The King, believed to hold the most power in the nation, was instead the most powerless and the ones who sacrificed the most as they bear the weight of their crown.
