Disney-era Lucasfilm has given me essentially one film I adored (Rogue One, which also has my favorite SW ship and two of my favorite SW characters in Cassian and Jyn). It's also produced two more films that I very much liked (though only one of those still remains high in my estimation tbh), and a bunch of SW material that is not really the SW that plays in my mind, but at least fun and interesting to think about with the very glaring exception of TROS. I never had any investment in Legends, either, so for me the Disney era is not some huge loss.
I say all of this to emphasize that I'm not a kneejerk Disney SW hater. Nevertheless, I'm actually very disappointed with DLF's tendency to emphasize how ground-breaking and diverse and ~challenging some new SW media thing is without doing much to support the people involved or appearing to foresee that a fanbase prone to bigotry, nostalgia, and throwing screaming temper tantrums for decades on end is not going to react well. This is in no way an excuse for those fans, but DLF does not seem to ever predict how SW fans will respond despite their well-documented history of responding really badly to anything that remotely challenges them.
I love SW and I love my personal friends in SW fandom, but there have always been a significant number of vocally hateful and reactionary SW fans who manage to shape the discourse around basically everything in it. This is completely predictable. The fact that DLF seems completely unprepared for this reaction every time they give central roles behind and in front of the camera to women and/or POC, and also appears to do very little to support the actual RL marginalized people they hire when not just cravenly giving in to the worst elements of the SW fanbase (*cough*TROS*cough*) is incredibly frustrating.
Yeah, this is about DLF's poor handling of eminently predictable fan tantrums over The Acolyte which has just culminated in cancelling it after a bare eight episodes, but it's happened so many times at this point. The Acolyte was far from perfect but after how visibly unprepared DLF were for the raging bigotry directed at Kelly Marie Tran, John Boyega, and Daisy Ridley, or how weird people were about Solo, or the misogynoir surrounding the response to Reva in Obi-Wan Kenobi, or or or—they absolutely could and should have known that something like The Acolyte was going to need a lot of higher-level support to have any chance of success. At the very least there's no excuse for being surprised at this point.
And it feels a bit like it, and the actual people involved in it, were never really given a fair shot and the real higher investment is going to be in, like, Baby Yoda 4: Now With More Ewoks.
My friends and I just finished our first run of Jedi: Survivor, which we really, really liked, but there is definitely a tragic white boy protagonist propped up by POC and/or women (many now dead!) aspect to the whole thing that feels essential to its popularity. And it is frustrating and disappointing and all the more so because it's so eminently foreseeable at this point.
#a show centered on morally ambiguous women of color with two moms#who ultimately challenge the fandom's stoic jedi power fantasy ideal ... who could have expected fan outrage???#OH WAIT ANYONE literally anyone could have#anghraine babbles#anghraine rants#star wars#sw fanwank#cw racism#cw misogyny#long post#tv: the acolyte

Takeaways from reflecting on your kick-ass writing, or kick-ass lack of writing, during a year more focused on survival than perhaps any other: The range! I can see my comfort zones and the areas I want to work on as a writer. I got a lot more just-do-it this year, settling into a pretty strong pattern of writing consistently and confidently. Fanfic makes me happy and it makes others happy, so I dedicated a lot of time to it. By staying pretty consistently in one fandom, I was able to try lots of scopes, relationships, styles, and genres.
Most surprising fic you wrote this year: It has to be 1 Rogue Street, the paranormal investigator fic. It started as a joke about sleep paralysis demons and turned rapidly into a 45K horror comedy. I think it’s one of the most interesting, most unique, most enjoyable things I’ve ever written. I had some amazing friends encouraging me throughout the drafting, so even though it didn’t get much attention on ao3, I count it as a cult hit.
How you grew as a writer this year: I got more confident with writing action scenes, a major feature in Hanging the Moon, and horror doing Rogue Street. I didn’t worry too much about repeating myself or recycling ideas, which meant I could explore splinter ideas I might have discarded in the past. I literally grew as a writer by getting a lot of subscribers and friends: knowing that there’s probably someone who’ll read that silly thing I was planning to slap on my works page is so encouraging and empowering. I also did some really fun experiments with narration: Highwater made me a lot more confident taking risks with storytelling. I’m excited to see what comes easily and what new challenges are next!
What’s coming in 2021: I want to wrap up Flying Blind, my Din Djarin-centric series: I’ve been waiting until season two ended and now I need to shuffle some things around to keep it roughly canon-compliant. There’s a collaborative OT3 project I’m still really keen on. I haven’t contributed to the lovely ship of kalluzeb yet, so let’s pencil that in. If I step outside Star Wars, it’ll probably be to dust off that adoribull outline and try to get it out before Dragon Age 4. But having just wrapped my lastest multichap draft, I’m leaving myself open to suggestions at the moment (yes, you can prompt me).
Tagging: @bright-elen @intricatecakes @semisweetshadow and every other writer following me! Lie and say I tagged you!

Harry Potter, John Murphy, Jyn Erso and Rachel Green ^^
Harry Potter
Why I like them: he’s this naive little bean that is only as observant as a lamp and doesn’t deserve the shit he goes through
Why I don’t: i don’t understand his love of dumbledore
Favorite episode (scene if movie): goblet of fire will always be my favorite harry book/movie but i love harry’s character in order of the phoenix. he really starts to own his agency and i’ll never forgive rowling (for a lot of things) for not making him a teacher later in life because when he’s teaching the DA you can tell how happy and in his element he is
Favorite season/movie: goblet of fire
Favorite line: “ There’s no need to call me ‘sir,’ Professor. “ i wish we would’ve got harry’s true sassy nature more in the movies
Favorite outfit: i was a sucker for this one growing up
OTP: harry/cedric
Brotp: harry/luna, harry/ginny, harry/ron (but i also ship all of these…)
Head Canon: HE’S BI
Unpopular opinion: apparently hating harry/hermione is unpopular in this fandom but it’s the only thing i don’t ship pretty much
A wish: cedric was still alive and we could’ve had more interactions, also, i love the idea of slytherin!harry, think about it
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: i mean it’s over so, it doesn’t really matter
5 words to best describe them: loyal, sassy, brave, curious, lucky
My nickname for them: lamp potter, or lamp-boy. it derives from his observance level
John Murphy
Why I like them: he’s sassy and unapologetic about the person he is. that’s not saying he doesn’t feel regret, because i know he does, but he doesn’t apologize for who the earth turned him into, and he was wronged and doesn’t try to play it off as nothing, he lets everyone know he was wronged.
Why I don’t: i mean he did shoot raven so, i’ll always slightly hate him
Favorite episode (scene if movie): i love murphy in the finale of season 3.
Favorite season/movie: season 2 or 4 probably.
Favorite line: “Touch me again and I’ll end you…in a non-criminal way.” and when he told clarke that he would kill her if she touched emori. basically anytime murphy is the voice of reason and calls clarke out on her shit
Favorite outfit: its hard to pick a favorite when they only have like two outfits to their name, lmao
OTP: memori
Brotp: murphy/raven, murphy/bellamy, murphy/wells
Head Canon: HE’S BI
Unpopular opinion: rewatching now, i love season one murphy. don’t @ me
A wish: i want murphy/bellamy to happen at least once. like a drunken kiss or something
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: murphy/raven romantically
5 words to best describe them: determined, resilient, sassy, passionate, funny
My nickname for them: trash man, my garbage son, king trash mouth
Jyn Erso
Why I like them: she goes through such a good development throughout the movie. plus she’s such a badass. (and i loved felicity jones prior to the movie so i knew i’d love her)
Why I don’t: i hate the little rant she goes on after she finds out cassian was going to kill her father. like all the sudden she fucking cares about the rebellion and is shading him? get off your pedestal.
Favorite episode (scene if movie): i love when she’s facing krennic at the end, when she’s getting the signal out
Favorite season/movie: Rogue One….since it’s sadly the only one
Favorite line: “We’ll take the chance. And the next one. and the one after that.”
Favorite outfit: i’m very gay
OTP: jyn/cassian
Brotp: jyn/k2, jyn/bodhi
Head Canon: n/a
Unpopular opinion: i love the ending of rogue one. i don’t think there’s any other way it could’ve ended
A wish: part of me wishes we could’ve gotten a kiss, but i also love that they didn’t because then you can read it as platonic too, it doesn’t have to be a romantic relationship
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: again it’s over so… yeah
5 words to best describe them: determined, survivalist, strong, resilient, stubborn
My nickname for them: n/a
Rachel Green
Why I like them: to be honest i’m not even entirely sure why i love rachel so much, but she was the first character i fell in love when i was little, and i loved her ever since. she’s such a resilient character, when she gets knocked down, she gets right back up
Why I don’t: she can be a little vague and naive at times. also she keeps going back to ross which is annoying
Favorite episode (scene if movie): there’s a lot but the cheesecake episode always sticks out to me. when she and chandler are eating cheesecake off the floor
Favorite season/movie: whenever she moves in with joey. it’s such a fun dynamic
Favorite line: "It’s not that common, it doesn’t happen to every guy, and it is a big deal!”
Favorite outfit: do you mean actual fashion icon rachel green? it’s hard to pick a favorite
OTP: i honestly don’t think i really have one for her. my biggest rachel ship is rachel/chandler but its not otp level
Brotp: rachel/chandler, rachel/monica/phoebe, rachel/joey
Head Canon: Idk
Unpopular opinion: is there any unpopular rachel opinions? other than she’s amazing which for some reason is controversial
A wish: rachel/joey never happened. i hated that storyline. so much
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: again, it’s over so….yeah
5 words to best describe them: ambitious, fashionable, naive, loyal, strong
My nickname for them: n/a
Thank you!

Mash for the TV series one and all the questions and star wars for the salty asks
M*A*S*H
Favourite character: Dr.+Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce, the one and only, and love of my life even though he really shouldn’t be
Funniest character: They’re… all hilarious in their own ways…. I love Hawkeye’s punning, Trapper’s one-liners, Frank’s patheticness, Klinger’s sheer zaniness…. Though Hawkeye and Trapper have had me in tears of laughter the most out of everyone, so I guess them
Best-looking character: None of them are especially handsome/pretty or anything, but I’ll go with pre-mustache BJ. I have yet to see anyone else pull off a pink henley like he did.
3 favourite ships: I don’t romantically ship anyone. I like how Hawkeye and Margaret’s relationship develops, the Radar/Henry father-son dynamic is adorable, and Frank and Margaret did make for some comedy gold even though she deserves sooooo much better than him.
Least favourite character: I honestly love all of the main cast. A lot of the one-off military brass higher-ups were complete assholes, so I guess one of them? I know this is cheating but so there.
Least favourite ship: I don’t see romantic Hawkeye/Trapper or Hawkeye/BJ (sorry 90% of the MASH fandom), so those, even though I love both friendships.
Reason why I watch it: The quality comedy, the zany characters, and the hope and humanity that (usually) persists even in the middle of the most depressing circumstances there could be. The show (and especially Hawkeye) was also one of the main things that helped me get through a pretty rough patch in my life, so, yeah, I’m eternally grateful for Alan Alda’s existence.
Why I started watching it: It would be on TV and my mom would sometimes watch it and I just kinda got sucked in
Aaand Salty Star Wars under the cut, bc this is probably gonna get long
1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?
Reylo. Sorry. But no. I hate that fucker and Rey deserves so much better.
2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?
Most of them, tbh….. I’m really not a shipper.
3. Have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion?
OHHHH YES. Many times.
4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?
I already mentioned my disgust for reylo right
5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?
Not in Star Wars, at least, but that’s because I don’t ship anyone anyway. Except for Han/Leia and Kylo/purgatory. Those I do ship.
6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?
Nope
7. Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now?
The oversaturation of TFA stuff (especially when compared to Rogue One, which was, imo, a FAR superior movie but doesn’t have a third as much fandom recognition) cooled my feelings toward TFA somewhat. I still like it, but in more of a “whatever, it’s alright” sort of way.
8. Have you received anon hate? What about?
Pfft no I’m not that important
9. Most disliked character(s)? Why?
Kylo. Whiny little pissbaby. I don’t like Anakin either, but at least he had REASONS why he was such a tortured little whiner. Kylo doesn’t have any of those backstory sads, he’s just a not-so-little emo fuck with a nonsensical boner for the dark side.
Jabba and Palpatine are also terrible people, and I really do not understand the fandom’s obsession with Hux. He’s so boring. He’s just….. occasionally kinda there.
10. Most disliked arc? Why?
Attack of the Clones is irredeemably terrible in every single way. Sorry. (Not.) Though the Padme+Anakin “““romance”““ is especially cringeworthy.
11. Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?
I don’t see enough love for Qui-Gon Jinn and his fuck-the-council-I-do-what-I-want poncho-wearing fabulousness
12. Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?
I like the ewoks. Fight me.
13. Unpopular opinion about XXX character?
I think I’ve slandered Kylo enough for the time being
14. Unpopular opinion about your fandom?
Can the Rogue One fandom maybe please stop shipping everyone in sight? I like Cassian/Jyn too, but frankly this is getting ridiculous. Also Bodhi. Y’all fuckers need to start showing some more love for him.
15. Unpopular opinion about the manga/show?
God forbid Star Wars ever becomes an anime…..
16. If you could change anything in the show, what would you change?
The entire prequels tbh. Just…. scrap them entirely, rewrite them from scratch so they actually make sense, practical effects > cgi, and hire a halfway competent director.
17. Instead of XYZ happening, I would have made ABC happen…
Instead of Padme dying because “she lost the will to live” (?????) I’d have made her start what eventually becomes the rebellion and die in a way that actually means something and makes sense for her character. And wait a few years for that death so Leia actually CAN remember her like she claims to in RotJ.
18. Does not shipping something ‘popular’ mean you’re in denial and/or biased?
Uh…. what the fuck is this asking…… people can have different opinions and also everyone has biases……..? there is no ~objective shipping truth~ that people must be in denial from…….? what the fuck
19. What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?
Shippers. That goes for any and every fandom.
20. What is the purest ship in the fandom?
I guess Finn/Rey or Finn/Poe is as “““pure”““ as it gets. Have I ever mentioned that I hate tumblr’s obsession with “““purity”““, by the way? Because I do. I fucking despise it.
If we’re talking literal ships, then the Millennium Falcon is the most perfect piece of junk in the entire galaxy.
21. What are your thoughts on crack ships?
I mean, smugglers and drug dealers have to make a living too, though personally I think that captaining a crack ship would be too dangerous.
22. Popular character you hate?
Never mind I guess I’m not done bashing Kylo yet. Also, Yoda’s a reasonably interesting character but god I hate him and his terrible TERRIBLE black-and-white outlook on the world. Most of the Jedi Council is guilty of that, actually. I kinda hate them all.
23. Unpopular character you love?
I think I’ve already mentioned Qui-Gon and Bodhi
24. Would you recommend XXX to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes because for all its flaws Star Wars (the original trilogy at the very least) is a classic and deservedly so. It’s such a great archetypal underdog story with wonderful characters and action and MUSIC, DEAR GOD THE MUSIC, ALL HAIL JOHN WILLIAMS FOREVER AND EVER AMEN
25. How would you end XXX/Would you change the ending of XXX?
I mean, Star Wars as a whole is still ongoing. I’d change quite a few things in TFA, especially the whole Han/Leia (lack of a) thing. That was so unnecessary.
26. Most shippable character?
Han Solo spends his life in various spaceships, so probably him. Luke, Poe, Rey, and Anakin also qualify, as they have plenty of spaceship time.
27. Least shippable character?
Do we ever see Jabba on a ship? I think he’d be too heavy and take up too much space, personally. He should stay on the ground.
#man these got REALLY salty#I still love star wars I promise even if I did tear certain aspects of it to shreds#I answer stuff

Urgh, lost my draft and had to start this again.
So it’s time to do that tag game thing @easkyrah and @winged-defender-of-deltora asked me to do. Thanks friends/mom~~~
relationship status: Single, with my husbands Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson, Tobias Eaton, James T. Kirk, Anthony DiNozzo, also plenty of other fictional characters---you know the drill.
last song listened to: I had to make up an essay and was sleepy, so I chose mY FAVORITE PIECE OF ALL TIME ALSO BY MY HUSBAND, SERGEI RACHMANINOFF. That’s right---Piano Concerto No. 2. Did you know that Sergei was depressed for quite some time after many criticized his previous symphony and he felt lost after his role model, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky passed away? Did you know that he wrote his way out with music, out of the dumps and into the light? Did you know he blew the audience away with this concerto, and showed them all what music is, with its swells and excitement and anger and disappointment and dreams? Sergei is me, I am Sergei---we are such grand dreamers, travelling to a distant world that only exists for ourselves, then coming back down to Earth and attempting to explain it in words---but, this is not possible. The only way to describe the ethereal, captivating magic that is true to us is through music.
last book read: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (cries because for @easkyrah and @winged-defender-of-deltora, it’s also The Great Gatsby because school). We are all Gatsby, reaching out to that distant dream, fingers almost grasping it as we realize dreams never come true, not the way we over-romanticized it with our wild imaginations. Lost Generation and hopelessness feels are strong.
favorite color: Purple, mainly because of the Lakers ever since I was a child, but also because dark purple is aesthetically pleasing to me.
top 3 ships:
Oh.
Oh my.
@easkyrah, @winged-defender-of-deltora, you knew this was coming.
~~~~BEWARE: TIVA RANT ALERT~~~
1)Anthony DiNozzo/Ziva David, Tiva, NCIS.
I marathoned NCIS in the summer of 2009 and began watching it live every Tuesday (that’s right, before I got a DVR and could record stuff) at quite a young age. I remember it distinctly---my favorite episode to this day is that one.
That’s right Tiva shippers.
That one.
Truth or Consequences, Season 7, Episode 1.
“Are you alright, McGee?”
“I’m just glad you’re still alive.”
“You thought...I was dead?”
“Oh...Oh yeah. Huh.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Well...McGee didn’t think you were dead...McGee...”
“Tony. Why are you here?”
“Couldn’t live without you, I guess.”
So I grew up shipping Tiva, majorly. As I grew older, I could see why these characters were so compelling: they are both so amazingly complex and their chemistry is so special that it is impossible not for them to love each other. They choose not to, to obey Rule 12 (which was broken by Bishop with her just simply asking, which made me quite mad, but that is a different subject). But in the end, they chose each other in that orange grove, Ziva so deep in self-hatred, guilt, disgust, and exhaustion, Tony so deep in love, desperation, and need. Ziva is so lost in herself and blinded by the belief that she will never be enough, that she will never do enough good to balance her sins and the blood on her hands; Tony is so loving, patient, kind, and desperate for a woman to stay with him like she has---brought back by a terrorist who kept her in his camp for months, brought back by finding her over and over again (Cobb, the elevator, the post-elevator us, Tali and the opera). Who loves him as she has---someone who understands fatherly issues, someone who understands dead mothers, someone who understands choices that were made to put them on their path they are right now (Tony’s college basketball injury, the fire where he saved the little boy but couldn’t save his sister; Ziva’s choices to please her father, Tali’s death, Ari’s murderous fall, dead from her finger).
They are also defying the stereotypical role: Tony may be the playboy who went to boarding school and loves movies, but there are reasons behind his fears of commitment (Wendy, Paula, Kate, Jeanne---all the women who leave him or die) and unending love for film (his mother). Ziva may look like the badass woman, heartless assassin---but she has such a large heart for NCIS, for Gibbs, for Abby, for McGee, for everyone; for her sister, her mother, her father, her brother, as well as a strong sense of individuality and justice. Her father left her to die in the desert---and yet she forgave him, and loved him. His death broke her. Her brother was a terrorist, and she forced herself to kill him---to protect the innocent (Gibbs).
My point is: Tony and Ziva complement each other so well that over 8 years, they became dependent on the presence of their partner. We’ve seen what happens when one leaves the other: both of them fall into disarray (of course, not with Tali, their daughter).
They’ve done so much for the other---he jeopardized his entire career, and for what? For you.; he went to desert to die for vengeance, no, for love; she went to the desert to die for guilt, penance at what she did to him, to Michael. He was willing to fight for her---he was fighting for you, Ziva; she couldn’t let him in because---the ones who get too close always end up dead. These two have been through everything together and they always come back to each other to strengthen the other, to love the other.
And they deserved SO MUCH BETTER. I really, really don’t like that Ziva didn’t tell Tony about their child----I thought that was very inaccurate of her character. Nevertheless, I wanted to see them happy, not matter what fan theories say. I think Ziva David deserved so much more than just one episode concerning her death, and more than just a few clips to remember her---because she was so much more than just a regular Jewish female character.
But, I am extremely happy that it is finally, finally canon.
“I loved her , Tim.”
“I know you did.”
They are just THE ULTIMATE, PERFECT SHIP.
Anyway. Moving on.
~~~TIVA RANT OVER~~~
2)Sherlock Holmes/Irene Adler, Adlock, A Scandal in Bohemia, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle.
I mean, what can I say? Irene Adler is the only person in the entire Holmes universe who outsmarts him. The dialogue, the choreography in Sherlock, the legendary strong, feminine, sneaky traits of Adler---Sherlock is intrigued by her, and obviously is interested in her, romantic or not.
These two, in my opinion, are as iconic as Watson and Holmes are because of the dynamic and the chemistry between them. I think BBC Sherlock portrayed their relationship the best---the need to impress her, the desire to play this cat-like game, pouncing on each other with each chance. The acting was amazing---Lara Pulver and Benedict Cumberbatch, thank you very much. It’s golden, and I love it.
3)Jyn Erso/Cassian Andor, RebelCaptain, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
I fell in love with these two halfway into the movie, and I still am (as of right now, stuck in a RebelCaptain fanfiction overload). The chemistry between Diego Luna (isn’t he adorable?) and Felicity Jones was on fire (as they soon were---too soon?).
They also have similar childhoods---having to fend for themselves at a very young age, putting walls upon walls up, but only needing a few days with each other to make a connection, to see themselves in each other, and make a choice to trust the other despite their reservations, their anger, their fears.
What other ship has one of them climb up an elevator, shot, to make sure the other is okay? What other ship has an intense scene in an elevator, descending toward their doom (Well...see #1.)? What other ship dies in each other’s arms, turning into Stardust?
“Your father would have been proud of you, Jyn.”
(You could hear me screaming in the movie theatre.)
So there you have it. I don’t have anyone to tag, so, oops. Thanks again for tagging me so I could Tiva rant randomly @easkyrah and @winged-defender-of-deltora!

I am seeing John Wick 2 on Friday and I am so prepared for the Cassian and John feels now, oh my god! I am actually watching the first one as we speak and I can't.... Keanu is my OG husband and he makes me feel all KINDS OF FEELS just by a singular look.
Uhhhhhhh yeah I guess I should be embarrassed by how much I fucking love John Wick but I’m not….aaaanyway I have been looking forward to this since I was accidentally in the John Wick 2 panel at New York comic con (I was posted in Madison Square Garden all day in anticipation of the Walking Dead panel, oops–Common and Keanu were both there and I must say I was weak in the knees), and I got access to an early screening so…sign me tf up!
Cassian & John’s, uh, dynamic was by far my favorite part of the movie, even though I really enjoyed the whole thing because I love bloody, bloody vengeance. Also hot tattooed assassins. I really hope you tell me how you feel about JW2 (also weep with me about my new man ship, because let’s be real, I’ll probably write that fic at some point)!!
#I really love John wick#also common#and obviously Keanu bae#Keanu is at PEAK HOTNESS in this#anon asks#ask lex
