inwardly he knows it's true and he doesn't want it to be true because it feels like giving something up. matt loves love, so he stays in denial for a really long time because he's scared and he's a hopeless romantic and he wants to know what it's like to fall in love with your soulmate over and over again.

and, honestly, that's what mike is, to matt. his soulmate. they're so meant to be it's almost sickening, and not even in a romantic sense, at first, just in the my-life-wouldn't-be-this-good-without-you-in-it type of way, the way you can spend days of your time together and never get tired of the other person.

so like. yeah. he tells himself he can't be aromantic because of mike, but he doesn't love mike in the way mike loves him and in the way he wants so badly to be able to love mike back. they break up, eventually, and it fucking sucks because matt can't explain what's wrong, can't pin down what makes him feel a little bit sick when mike gets too drunk and is even more touchy and sweet than he is on the regular.

he's taken the shitty online tests and read every article and blog he can find and matt has always been good at running and hiding from the truth, it's really no trouble to keep doing it with this, same as anything, and it's not healthy but he can't bring himself to care enough to stop lying to everyone, including himself, for years, until mike is back in vancouver and he's drunk and matt is so fucking scared, still, again, but he's fought for enough bravery that he comes out to mike the next day in a whisper, when mike is still a bit dizzy from the hangover and the time travel and he hasn't left matt's side since they'd both woken up, stumbling out of the same bed several hours apart.

mike listens and makes both of them tea (chamomile) and lets matt bury his face in his shoulder when matt starts crying, because he hasn't said the words out loud before, not even when he was alone, and it's overwhelming and he's glad to tell the truth even though it still kind of hurts, knowing he can't have what he so desperately wanted for years. but he's aromantic and he learns to love that part of himself even if it changes everything and being honest doesn't have to mean giving everything he cares for up.
