Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama is a contemporary Japanese artist known for her extensive use of polka dots. She primarily works in sculpture and installation, while also being active in painting, performance and video art. Kusama studied at the Kyoto City University of Arts, and has won many awards, including Person of Cultural Merit and the Asahi Prize.

Out of Kusama's portfolio I find her polka dots pumpkins the most appealing, the colour palette is striking and the scale of the dots are effective in creating an illusion of depth.

Out of all her work her pumpkins are also the most relevant to my project. I discovered Kusama after I had already made a pumpkin out of clay, and decided I wanted to paint the vegetable in a similar fashion. My pumpkin is significantly smaller and has way less dots than hers, the colours are also slightly different. However I was inspired by Yayoi Kusama's whimsical creations.
