I'm watching a documentary about a woman's softball team in rural Yucatan (Las Amazonas de Yaxunah) and I think it's a good reminder to me about feminism: the actions we take don't have to be big, world changing, or addressing the worst most oppressive parts of our lives. Anything that brings women freedom, self-worth, empowerment will naturally lead to bigger changes. These women started off just playing with each other in their town, learning to use their bodies and gaining new strengths and skills. Even this small amount of liberation and humanity caused pushback from the men in their community (teasing, berating, distrust, locking women out of the house, one man even left his wife). But they persisted and didn't break from the pressure and that led to a sort of unintentional collective consciousness-raising where, because they felt stronger and more powerful than before, they began to look at other limitations that were placed on women. Since pre-colonial times, women were forbidden from entering the cenote (a freshwater sinkhole pool that villages were built around as a freshwater supply that also had spiritual significance) because, as with so many other cultures across time and space, women with their menstruation were seen as unclean and the men believed they would taint the purity of the cenote. The women on the softball team began to question this restriction and rebelled against hundreds of years of oppression by allowing themselves to swim in the cenote. Then, they continued to push against the boundaries of their lives: after a video someone took of them playing went a little viral, neighboring towns invited them to come play. I don't know how common it was for these women to leave their town, but it certainly was not common for them to travel for themselves, just because they wanted to, to play sports. Even after they achieved international success, playing in tournaments across Mexico and being invited for an exhibition game in the US, the men in Yaxunah still resented them and tried to halt the renovation of the baseball field (which men also use!) because it had a sign that called it the Amazon's field and they felt their authority had been undermined because the women did not go through the town commissary for approval. So they are still fighting against female oppression with every bit of progress that they make. This may not have been their intention when they started the team, but anything women do that defies the roles prescribed for them by men will, by default, become feminist action. Putting in bleachers and bathrooms at your sports field seems like an entirely apolitical project, but because women are leading it and because it will benefit women men will try to obstruct it and women have to work against patriarchal powers in response. They have to create female solidarity, become leaders, cultivate various physical and mental skills- all of which are vital to the feminist cause- in order to do something which at first may seem trivial or not worth the effort in the grand scheme of female liberation. But if there is something care about, even something super niche or small, by centering women and working hard to make it the best it can be you can contribute to the feminist fight and create greater change.
The movie is called Las Amazonas de Yaxunah and I watched it on ESPN+

[ad_1] A Mayan workforce from a small group at the Yucatán Peninsula has led to a sensation via excelling as its athletes play barefoot and put on conventional clothes, breaking boundaries with each and every recreation.Via Adam WilliamsImages via Marian CarrasqueroNov. 17, 2021HONDZONOT, Mexico — Taking part in barefoot and dressed in conventional Mayan clothes referred to as huipiles, the Little Devils softball workforce smashes hits, snags line drives and dashes across the bases within the sweltering warmth of a Yucatán Peninsula jungle the city. The workforce just lately delivered a 22-2 thumping to its combatants, the Pussycats, for any other triumph in a season that has made the Little Devils a countrywide sensation, for no longer best their taste of play but additionally who they're: a gaggle of Indigenous girls from a conventional group that when discouraged girls from pursuing sports activities, which have been noticed because the province of fellows. And the Little Devils now have corporate, the Yaxunah Amazonas, who additionally play shoeless and in conventional apparel and feature helped upend sports activities tradition within the Yucatán.“Right here a lady serves the house and isn't intended to head out and play sports activities, mentioned Fabiola Would possibly Chulim, the workforce captain and supervisor of the Little Devils, identified right here as Las Diablillas, their title in Spanish. “When a lady marries, she’s intended to do chores and attend to her husband and children. We made up our minds a couple of years in the past that’s no longer going to hinder us anymore from taking part in a game when we wish.”4 years in the past, girls within the workforce’s small group, Hondzonot, started taking part in a changed model of baseball within the afternoons. The theory was once to get some workout after finishing family chores, and it grew from there. The Diablillas had no gloves and just a do-it-yourself bat whittled from picket. They performed with a tennis ball. The sport adopted the foundations of baseball, although as in kickball, a runner could be regarded as thrown out if struck with the ball.A girls’s workforce in a close-by the city additionally performed the changed 3-hitter with a tennis ball and challenged the Diablillas to a fit. The ladies of Hondzonot received, gained 1,500 pesos (about $75) and uniforms, and have been assigned a trainer via the native municipality to show them the foundations of softball.Despite the fact that they now had jerseys, the Hondzonot girls most popular to play softball as they'd prior to — barefoot and in huipil clothes, which they make themselves and put on steadily locally. This determination would turn out to be the defining function of the Diablillas, and it helped propel them to status.“We put on the huipil with a large number of delight, and it's one thing that represents us as Mayan girls,” Would possibly Chulim mentioned. “We additionally aren’t acquainted with dressed in footwear, and after we did we simply were given blisters. Why would we put on one thing that makes us uncomfortable?”Because the Diablillas play extra video games, all friendlies as a result of there is not any established softball league for them, within the Mexican states of Quintana Roo and Yucatán, their status within the area grows. Now, only a few years after studying the foundations of softball, they've performed in stadiums prior to 1000's of fanatics. and their faces are on a mural within the within reach lodge the city Playa del Carmen. Ultimate spring President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico invited Would possibly Chulim to seem at certainly one of his day by day information meetings in Mexico Town. The workforce’s stardom has introduced trade in perceptions amongst males within the the city. Whilst individuals of the Diablillas used to request permission for one thing so simple as leaving the house, they now say they really feel extra liberated and empowered.“As we've advanced
at the box, my existence has advanced as smartly,” mentioned Alicia Canul Dzib, who performs 2d base and pitches for the Diablillas. “I used to in point of fact best go away the home to lend a hand my husband with our plants. Now because of softball, I've permission to depart the home, experience myself with pals and seek advice from new cities. It motivates me to stay taking part in and set an instance for my daughter.”The instance set via the Diablillas has made girls at the Yucatán Peninsula — and in the remainder of the rustic — hopeful about extra sources for a game that, regardless of a fourth-place end via the Mexican workforce on the Summer time Olympics in Tokyo, has gained intermittent and restricted improve at a countrywide stage. Despite the fact that for just about a century Mexico has had a national skilled baseball league that from time to time options Primary League Baseball gamers, girls’s softball leagues are presented best at state and municipal ranges. There's hope, then again, that the recognition of the Diablillas and the Amazonas will constitute a “watershed second” for the expansion of the game in Mexico, Abel Fernández, president of the Quintana Roo state baseball affiliation, mentioned in a up to date phone interview.“It’s no longer not unusual for Mayan or Indigenous girls to be considering sports activities of their communities, and the Diablillas are breaking the ones stereotypes,” Fernández mentioned, including that Quintana Roo had just lately created a state softball affiliation. “They’ve generated a large number of consideration, and now we’re seeing a increase in hobby in softball and sports activities amongst girls within the area.”At a up to date observe, the Amazonas, 15 gamers ages 15 to 64, communicated in a mixture of Mayan and Spanish, roared with laughter and tossed the ball across the diamond as one of the crucial their goats bleated from the outfield, the place they have been tied to bushes.Just like the Diablillas, the Amazonas have turn out to be more and more sought as combatants for groups of ladies who put on cleats and standard uniforms. And in July, the Amazonas have been invited to seem at the box of the Yucatán Leones, the pro baseball group based totally in Mérida, the state capital. The workforce captain, Fermina Dzid Dzul, mentioned that since forming 3 years in the past the workforce had fought to vary gender paradigms about sports activities participation in Yaxunah.“After I first began taking part in, the lads in my circle of relatives mentioned jokes and feedback like ‘You’re simply squandering precious time taking part in softball,’” mentioned Alvi Yajaira Diaz Poot, who performs a number of positions for the Amazonas. “Now once I come house from video games they're desperate to know the way the sport went or even carry me one thing to drink.”And whilst the Amazonas and Diablillas know of one another and are conscious about their similarities, nor is pushing for a head-to-head fit to resolve the most efficient Mayan girls’s softball workforce at the Yucatán Peninsula. They perceive their luck and inclusion within the game imply that they have got already each received. . Chac Mool - Popol Vuh.
