👸🏾 BLOG + BOOKSTAGRAM TOUR 👸🏾 Thrilled today to be part of the @tbrbeyondtours blog + bookstagram tour for THE BLACK QUEEN by @brownboywriting, which released yesterday from @delacortepress! I'm coming at you today with my... 🌹 Top 5 Reasons to Read THE BLACK QUEEN! 1. Small-town secrets and lies, and examination of how they reverberate through generations “Hate does something to you if you hold onto it for too long. It can turn you into the very thing you’ve been taught to loathe. ... All of it poisoned me. ... That night in my mother’s car changed everything. Made me realize how we’ve both suffered and been affected by the sins and expectations of our parents.” (p. 384-385) 2. Exploration of racism in the Deep South “Separate but equal is still as Southern as iced tea.” (p. 15) 3. Exploration of grief, what it means to lose someone as a teenager/young adult “Nothing sounds good enough to say in front of who knows how many people at tonight’s game. Nothing I’ve scribbled down so far feels like me. Or her, for that matter. “This is why teenagers shouldn’t have to eulogize our friends. We’re supposed to have more time to get this right.” (p. 284) 4. Real talk about how white people respond to accusations of racism, whether systemic or individual, overt or unintentional “Why is it that every time a white person gets called out about their mistreatment of us, they flip the script by accusing *us* of ruining *their* lives by having the nerve to not sit back and take it?” (p. 250) 5. Discussion (geared towards the white reader) of what it means to be actively anti-racist “Learn. Listen. Don’t make your guilt the emotional baggage of others to deal with. It’s not their job to hold our hands and make us feel better.” 🌹 And there you have it! I'll put the synopsis in the comments here for you, and check out my blog post at Book-Keeping (link in bio) for more content plus a link to the full tour schedules! Thanks so much to the publisher and author for the eARC. 👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾 #theblackqueen #theblackqueen👸🏿 #theblackqueen👸🏾 #jumataemill #yathrillers #yathriller #yathrillerbook #yathrillerbooks #blogtour #bookstagramtour #bookkeepingblog https://www.instagram.com/p/CoIdVb_u-fm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Universal Linkr: books2read.com/Awaken1
~*~
A cryptic puzzle. A family secret. A deadly betrayal.
When her dad dies during a trip to Romania, Kat Barrett blames herself for their failed relationship. She's racked with guilt, haunted by strange dreams about the crash that killed him, and she’d do anything to have him back.
Then a package arrives. It’s from her dad and contains a list of clues — one of his classic scavenger hunts. Desperate for answers, she follows the clues to Bucharest and meets Maksim, a local with a dark past who offers to help. Kat doesn't trust him, but when she hits a dead end, she’s left with no other choice.
As they work together, decode the clues and trying (unsuccessfully) not to fall for each other, the scavenger hunt reveals a deadly secret the dreams have been pointing to, something Maksim’s old crime ring has been hiding all along, and Kat has walked into their trap. None Shall Sleep
BOOK REVIEW
Title: None Shall Sleep Author: Ellie Marney Rating: 5 / 5
None Shall Sleep is a gripping psychological thriller set in 1982. University student, Emma Lewis, is recruited by the FBI alongside Travis Bell to interview convicted juvenile killers. Their priority is to gather information on cold cases but are soon embroiled in an active case to catch a serial killer.
Time is running out and their best chances to solve it lie with incarcerated serial killer, nineteen year old, Simon Gutmunsson. Determined to retrieve answers, Emma attempts to interview the fiendishly alluring Simon unaware of how dangerous he can truly be.
This book made me a fan of psychological thrillers and was captivated from start to finish. The unconventional methods used to work the case were interesting and the characters working the operation felt so real and relatable. I thoroughly enjoyed the teen Mulder and Scully vibes from Emma and Bell, juxtaposed with the Silence of the Lambs atmosphere with Emma and Simon. The interactions between the latter pair built to something with an engagingly unpredictable dynamic. Yet even in the manipulative presence of ice angel-like genius Simon, Emma was no pushover. It was enjoyable to read her pov as a sharp, unrelenting fighter of a protagonist. Very much looking forward to the next instalment and I would definitely give this book a re-read.

Is it on your TBR? 🤎📖 Thank you to @epicreads for sending me a copy of the book. . . . s u m m a r y : Senior year at Ellingham Academy for Stevie Bell isn’t going well. Her boyfriend, David, is studying in London. Her friends are obsessed with college applications. With the cold case of the century solved, Stevie is adrift. There is nothing to distract her from the questions pinging around her brain—questions about college, love, and life in general. Relief comes when David invites Stevie and her friends to join him for study abroad, and his new friend Izzy introduces her to a double-murder cold case. In 1995, nine friends from Cambridge University went to a country house and played a drunken game of hide-and-seek. Two were found in the woodshed the next day, murdered with an ax. The case was assumed to be a burglary gone wrong, but one of the remaining seven saw something she can’t explain. This was no break-in. Someone’s lying about what happened in the woodshed. Seven suspects. Two murders. One killer still playing a deadly game. . . . h a s h t a g s : #NineLiars #MaureenJohnson #Epicreads #mysterybooks #yathriller #youngadultbooks #yabooks #booksbooksbooks #alwaysreading #flatlaystyle #bookishflatlay #bookphoto #bookphotographer #readersofinsta https://www.instagram.com/p/CnPkFkeutDV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Stevie Bell is back to solve a murder in Nine Liars by Maureen Johnson. "Senior year at Ellingham - Stevie is adrift. Her boyfriend, David, is in London. Her friends are concentrating on college applications. She's just solved a big case and now there's nothing to distract her. David invites her and her friends to London to do a two-week study abroad. Shortly after they arrive, David's friend, Izzy, tells them about a double-murder from 1995 that her aunt knew about. Nine friends went out to a country estate for the weekend, but only seven came back. Was it a burglary gone wrong? Or is someone still lying? " This story spends a lot of time in Stevie's head. She's worried about life, love and future. Her hoodie choices are interesting and hilarious. It's nice to be in a different location like London and to visit a creepy mansion in the countryside. Johnson makes the Nine a group you want to hang out with (but not too long - too much for me) There are secrets and more deaths. You never know until the reveal who the killer is. There were a couple of clues at the beginning so if you pay attention you might catch something. This can be read as a stand-alone. There are references to previous books but not much is given away if you haven't read them. Not a fan of the very end. Stevie deserves better. A nice YA crime fiction story from Johnson. Fans of the Truly Devious books will enjoy this one. #nineliars #maureenjohnson #trulydevious #ya #youngadultfiction #youngadult #yathriller #harpercollins #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #readinglife #bookphotography #bookcommunity #bookblogger #sodacityreads #suspensebook #bookhaul #literarycrimefiction #homelibrary #thrillerbooks #domesticthriller #crimefiction #thriller #characterdrivenbooks #mysterythriller #bookrecs #katherinetegenbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CmWZsPCLwxG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Blog Tour + #Review: LIVE YOUR BEST LIE by Jessie Weaver (w/ #giveaway)!
Tumblr media
Welcome to Book-Keeping and my stop on the Rockstar Book Tours blog tour for the YA mystery novel from debut author Jessie Weaver, Live Your Best Lie! I’ve got all the details, my review, and a giveaway below, so let’s get started!
About the Book
Tumblr media
title: Live Your Best Lie (Volume I) (Like Me Block You) author: Jessie Weaver publisher: Melissa de la Cruz Studio release date: 24 January 2023
Sometimes the prettiest Instagram feeds mask the darkest, and bloodiest, secrets. Social media influencer Summer Cartwright leads a very charmed life: millions of followers, the hottest designer and vintage clothes at her fingertips, a newly minted book deal, the coolest friends, and, until recently, the hottest boyfriend at her über-elite prep school. Every moment of her life has been carefully planned and cultivated to complement her “imperfectly perfect” social media persona. She is truly #LivingHerBestLife. But when Summer goes missing during her annual Halloween party and then an unscheduled post appears on her feed stating that she’ll be dead within the next five minutes, those closest to Summer know something isn’t quite right―or on-brand. Grace, Summer’s camera-shy best friend; Adam, Summer’s gamer ex-boyfriend; Laney, Summer’s moody camp roommate; and Cora, an influencer wannabe, all decide to investigate. And when they come upon Summer’s lifeless body, they soon realize that no filter is strong enough to mask the lies we tell ourselves. Told in multiple POVs interspersed with social media posts and flashbacks, Live Your Best Lie has twists and turns that will keep readers turning the page and no one will be able to guess the ending.

My 5-Star Review
Live Your Best Lie is the second book released by the newest Disney-Hyperion imprint, Melissa de la Cruz Studio, and is Jessie Weaver’s debut novel. This YA mystery explores the flip side to the pretty and perfect Instagram feeds of influencers -- the sometimes dark side that most of us never see. I really like how Jessie tells the story, using multiple POVs for our four main suspects, social media posts for our dead influencer victim, and flashbacks to slowly reveal to us exactly what happened. I am an avid reader of mysteries and thrillers, but I admit I did not see the ending coming! I had an idea, as I got towards the end of the book, of what I thought happened, but I was definitely not correct. That is a huge plus in my book, when an author can surprise me on who the murderer is!
I have to say, I think this would be an awesome book for a teen/YA book club to choose, as there is so much in here that would be great fodder for discussion. I don’t want to lay out exactly what those discussion points would be or else I’d give away too much, but suffice it to say that I want to talk to anyone and everyone who’s read it now to talk it all through! So if you pick this one up, please do let me know your thoughts, and let’s discuss everything that’s going on in this book.
Highly recommend Live Your Best Lie for any fan of YA mysteries, as well as anyone interested in explorations of influencer culture and/or social media’s impact on today’s teens.
Rating: 5 stars!
**Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for purposes of this blog tour. This review is voluntary on my pat and reflects my honest rating and review of the book.

One of us is lying
BOOK REVIEW
Title: One of us is lying Author: Karen M. McManus Rating: 4 / 5
A geek. A jock. A criminal. A princess. An Outsider.
Five students walk into detention but only four leave. Simon, creator of an app notorious for spreading high school gossip, dies 24-hours before he could post secrets of the other four students online. Investigators conclude it's no accident. All become suspects with secrets to keep. What matters is how far they'll go to protect them as the murder mystery unravels in small town Bayview.
This was an outstanding YA thriller that put a spotlight on the unrealistic expectations and pressures faced by youth. Particularly in a fast paced environment heavily influenced by media in general. It really bought the feelings of a claustrophobic small town bubble to life through the view points of the four student suspects. Tying in the dangers that such elements can create was also an interesting message.
I really loved the characters in this story and their growth. Despite their differences, the accusations they were facing motivated them to support each other which was wholesome. And even though the romance was a side element I was so invested in it. Such a satisfying read and I'm definitely looking forward to more.
