𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 ೄྀ࿐ ˊˎ- (Part 1)
Hey guys! I am Mahi and welcome to my first blog. Today is the last day of 2022 and this season of our show will be over now. So, why not a 2022 wrap-up? I mean, Spotify does it, so why not me? So, here is my recap of the year. (This post has been inspired by an Instagram post by @inastudious on Ig)
So, we are going to: celebrate the past, set intentions for the next year and create new systems.
CELEBRATE THE PAST
What did I do this year that I am proud of? What did I learn? How I felt?
Level 1: What I did
Found the best of friends and teachers
I found the best of friends this year. My last year of high school and forever friends. I have to give them that they handled me at my absolute worst and still love me when I just burnt down their forest. I know what I did and how I am. So, for them, I am going to be better because they deserve the best. I love them so so much. They are people my 11-year-old had been dreaming to be friends with. Shout out to Tanisha, Vanshika, Charu, Yashaswini, Shreya D, Harshita, Nistha, Riya K, Riya M, and Priyanka. You guys are amazing and I hope we still meet up when we go to college. My teachers were downright amazing. Couldn't ask for more. I have never seen such dedication in anyone ever.
2. Hiking Trip
This year in June, I went on a hiking trip in the foggy hills of Nagaland, India. The most relaxing experience even though we walked for like 6 hours to reach our destination. We stayed in a small hotel. It was a totally different experience. In between, I felt like giving up, but then I did the whole trek just for 2 cups of noodles that we got at the hotel. It was quite wet there. I kept falling down. But it's okay. It was unique and something I will surely do again!!
3. Escape Room
So, on my birthday this year, I planned to do an escape room with my cousins. Honestly, never again. Not that it was bad or anything- I genuinely feel that I am not good at this kinda stuff. Like, I feel that if I'll be getting murdered, then I'll just cry. No kidding. I'll cry all the way until the murderer decides to leave me alone. By the way, most of the escape room was done by Shakul (the one on the left). Ananya (the one on the right) helped. I just tried to act like Sherlock. Making simple things complex. lol. Anyways, it was fun. And I am happy that I tried it.
Level 2: What I learnt
Honestly, I learnt a lot this year. This year was a learning year only. So, here are the top three things that I learnt.
1. Never date anyone from the same school
Yes. Never date any person who goes to the same school or any institution where you see each other's faces every day. I know, it's fun at first. But then, it gets awkward when you guys break up. So, like, not good.
2. Speak now and get over it
This year, I confessed to a guy. He said no. But yk what good for me. I moved on very quickly. Like, it took me one Taylor Swift song to get over him. So, it was really cool. Just say it man, and get over it.
3. Don't let internet influence you
The Internet is a fucked up place, man. Don't digest everything that you see. I mean, it influences our habits like anything. I would see pretty lip balms and I'll search for them on Amazon. Damn. I don't need lip balms rn, but this marketing makes me think that I need that particular lip balm. This is one example. There are many others.
Level 3: What I felt
youtube
This song was basically what I felt throughout the year (Thank you, Taylor Swift). I was happy and sad. I was happy that I found such good friends and experienced the best of memories. But I am kinda sad that this is ending. Well, that's how life works, ig.

Health is on the ballot in November
I’ve seen the gurney from both sides now (with apologies to Joni Mitchell)
In the early eighties, I studied Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University. A beloved teacher of mine often joked, "If you ever get diagnosed with cancer, don't call your doctor, call your travel agent." That line always got a laugh. Then, I was diagnosed with cancer.
Thirty years later, as I was being wheeled into the operating room, my wonderful surgeon, Joanie Hope, leaned over the gurney and reassured me, "I'm going to take good care of you."
"I know you will," I replied.
That’s what medicine is supposed to be about. A trusting relationship between patient and provider. At no point should the grinding stress of financial ruin be layered on top of the hard work of not dying.
In my practice, I've often told patients, "I can't dictate what you can afford, but this is what you need." When I was a student, I didn't realize the significant impact cost would have on deciding which tests and procedures, even routine ones, to order. Like many in the medical field, my primary desire was to assist people in line with my training.
If nothing else, COVID-19 has shown that our healthcare providers are exceptional, with nurses donning garbage bags, refrigerator trucks filled with bodies, and a sense of building the plane while flying it. They have indeed risen to the occasion.
It also revealed a couple of glaring flaws. Not everyone has access to care, despite the Affordable Care Act, and it is unbelievably expensive when compared to the rest of the world
The United States held the unfortunate record for the highest number of Covid cases and deaths globally.
May 2021
COVID hit us hard. But did it hit hard enough to convince us to take some strong medicine?
Even though the US spends more, a lot more, on healthcare than any other country, we are not a nation of healthy people.
I cannot go through the whole "Medicine according to Marx " lecture here. For now, I will borrow the words of Yashaswini Singh, a Healthcare economist at Johns Hopkins University.
"There has been a longstanding tension between medicine as a profession and healthcare as a business. The key concern has always been that business obligations to shareholders might not align with physicians' obligations to patients"
Healthcare expenditures, measured as a percentage of GDP (the total value of goods and services produced annually), have risen from 5% in 1960 to 17.3% in 2022, according to Vankar. While I am not an economist, this represents a significant sum of money, predominantly managed by private equity funds, hedge fund managers, and pharmacy benefit managers. One might wonder, what could possibly go wrong?
Financial crisis of 2008-2009
HEALTH CARE ACCESS
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, also known as the ACA or Obamacare, has made strides in addressing the issue of access to health insurance for those who cannot afford it. The strategy includes expanding Medicaid—a move adopted by most but not all states—establishing a marketplace for individual health insurance, and offering subsidies to reduce the cost of policies. The uninsured rate decreased from 17.8% in 2010 to 8% in 2022, according to Tolbert, marking a significant benefit for the insurance industry.
The Families First Coronavirus Response Act, enacted during the Trump administration, mandated continuous Medicaid enrollment throughout the COVID-19 public health emergency. Upon its expiration at the end of March 2023, an estimated 25 million individuals, including a significant number of children, were disenrolled from health coverage, according to KFF.
Under the Biden administration, the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act have extended ACA subsidies until 2025, offering an average annual saving of $800 to 13 million people. (Dept. of Health and Social Services)
MAGA and Republican members of congress
Currently, the campaign is light on details, but it's known that in the summer of 2017, Congressional Republicans attempted unsuccessfully to dismantle Obamacare. This time around, Trump isn't focusing on repeal and replace rhetoric, but he claims to know how to fix our healthcare problems-because of course he does.
Project 2025 is an initiative developed by the conservative Heritage Foundation, aimed at influencing a new, like-minded President. Despite Trump's denial of any knowledge of this play book, many of the over 400 scholars and experts involved in Project 2025 have ties to his administration. The healthcare aspects focus predominantly on contentious cultural issues such as abortion, gender-affirming care, and fetal tissue research. It also proposes extensive changes to agencies like Health & Human Services, National Institutes of Health, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Further details will be covered in my upcoming issue on reproductive health.
In March of this year, the budget proposed by the Republican Study Committee in the House of Representatives, if enacted, would have cut $4.5 trillion from the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Additionally, it would have removed certain protections for consumers, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. (White House briefing 3/26/2024)
Biden/Harris
The Biden administration has primarily concentrated on managing the costs of prescription drugs such as insulin for Medicare recipients. While this approach may be beneficial in the short term and on a superficial level, it does not address the core issue. To effectively tackle the problem, the administration might need to heed the counsel of Republican Teddy Roosevelt to "speak softly and carry a big stick." The negative impact of banks being "too big to fail" is well-known, but the consequences are far more severe when hospital chains reach such a magnitude. This principle also extends to medical appliance manufacturers, Big Pharma, and hospitals that claim non-profit status.
During her tenure as California's Attorney General, Harris was an active opponent of healthcare consolidation for seven years. It is anticipated that she will seek methods to restrict private equity ownership of healthcare facilities, prioritizing public health over shareholder interests.
During her 2020 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, Senator Harris endorsed a "Medicare for all" plan among several proposals. Subsequently, she has aligned with the Biden Administration's strategy to expand upon Affordable Care Act. The progressive members of the caucus are expected to persist in their strong advocacy for a single-payer option.
My Take:
It has been seven years, six months and twenty-one days since I was wheeled into that operating room and had that exchange with my doctor/friend Joanie Hope, and to date I have no evidence of disease. I am lucky. I know that.
I believe everyone deserves equal access to quality care and expertise. That's why I pay attention to what political candidates promise, but I place greater importance on their actions. Health is on the ballot.

#740 BOOM-BOOM Bumrah is unstoppable in WI as he becomes just 3rd Indian bowler to grab hat-trick in test matches; Vihari’s maiden century and Ishant Sharma’s maiden test fifty are other highlights; Yashaswini bags gold in 10m Air Pistol in ISSF Shooting world cup ; Nadal outclasses Chung to setup 4th round clash with Cilic; Zverev, Monfils and Osaka win; Rublev shocks Kyrgios; Aguero continues to impress in EPL as Mancity win again; Liverpool continue to lead EPL; Barcelona held again in La Liga and more..:-)
WI needed early wickets and they got it straight away. Holder got one to straighten and Pant played across the line to be castled. Vihari and Jadeja took India past 300 which was the first target to please Virat Kohli. Cornwall dismissed Jadeja soon after for 16. India 302-6. Cornwall could have had Vihari too but was dropped at slip. He played flawless post that to reach his maiden test hundred. The whole India team stood to applause. He and Ishant had a stunning 112 run stand which took the gas of WI. Ishant scored his maiden test fifty as well. India were eventually dismissed for 416. Holder grabbed his 6th 5-fer. He also became 23rd WI player to grab 100 test wickets. WI left a lot of balls alone early on against Indian pacers. Campbell though had to play at a Bumrah beauty which pitched on middle and moved away. WI 9-1. Bumrah went on a roll as he dismissed Bravo, Brooks and Chase of consecutive deliveries to become just 3rd Indian bowler in test history to claim a test hattrick after Harbhajan and Irfan Pathan. WI 13-4. He was unplayable. He was swing away and in at pace which was troubling WI batsmen no end He had numbers of 3.4-1.3-4 post hat-trick. Speaking of rhythmic numbers !!! He later dismissed Braithwaite to grab his 2nd 5 fer in 5 days. WI 22-5. Hetmyer got a bit of luck as Kohli dropped him off SHami. He and Holder had a 45 run stand before Shami castled Hetmyer. In closing stages of play Bumrah dismissed WI captain . WI 78-7 and ended day’s play at 87-7. India could well win the match by 3rd day. Bumrah’s spell looked like 6-20 in 9 overs. Pretty sensational bowling.
In US open, Wozniacki and Ostapenko lost in straight sets against Andreescu and Ahn. Mertens, Bencic, Georges and Townsend reached 4th round with ease. Nadal easily beat Chung in straight sets to setup 4th round clash with Cilic who beat Isner in 4 tough sets. Nadal didn’t even face a break point which was a brilliant achievement. Zverev was up 5-2 against Beden before losing first set in tiebreaker. He regained composure to beat him in 4 sets to set up 4th round clash with Schwartzman. Winner of that match could potentially face Nadal or Cilic in QF. Kyrgios who has been overhyped by media was beaten in straight sets by Rublev. Rublev would meet Berretini in 4th round. Monfils beatn Shapovalov in 5 set thriller. He would Face Andujar in 4th round. Winner of this match would face winner of Rublev vs Berretini match. Great chance for players to make a slam final.
In EPL, City continued their good run as they thrashed Brighton 4-0 thanks to 2 goals by their star player Aguero. Liverpool continued their clean slate run in EPL as they won 4 of 4 matches to be top of leaderboard. ManU were held to 1-1 draw by Southampton. Chelsea were held to 2-2 draw by Sheff Utd. In La Liga, Barcelona were held to 2-2 draw by Osasuna. They have had poor start to La Liga with just 5 points form 3 games and are in 7th position currently.
Yashaswini bags gold in 10m Air Pistol in ISSF Shooting world cup and with it also wins Olympic quota place. Indian shooters are flying high which is good to see prior to Tokyo Olympics scheduled next year.
