Fandom Year in Review (2022)

It’s the very last day of 2022, and that means it’s time for a little look back at my fandom year in writing (and podficcing, events, etc.) once again! Then I’ll get back to writing before midnight, along with setting some goals and plans for 2023, of course. ;)

I posted 163 new stories to AO3 this year!

(Startlingly, as I had entirely forgotten, I also posted exactly 163 new stories to AO3 in 2021! o.o)

Those 163 stories were for 17 fandoms, 3 of them new for me to be posting for, and 50 ships! (18 of those ships were new.)

I posted a total of 377,979 words to AO3 this year!

I participated in 8 fandom events, with a total of 73 stories! Those events include:

Iruka Winter Bingo 2021-2022 (server event, @the-umino-hours) the Three Sentence Ficathon, over on Dreamwidth (moving to its own community for next year!) @harunosakuraweek @domaystic @badthingshappenbingo, which I will continue working on my board for @kakashiweek @whumptober, for which I wrote only minifics this year NejiHina Week (run by @nejihinata)

Yup. Even I am not immune from getting creative and making RWBY OCs. So I have an OC team made, and I'll share them with you. I'm (somewhat) proud to introduce...

Team AMRY (Armory)

Arthur Dartz

Human male, 17 years old, Average body type

Yang's height (About 5'7")

Pale skin, Blue eyes, Gray hair (Curly)

From Mantle, in the lower district

Wears a tattered, Musketeer-style cloak with the Atlas insignia on the front and back, and a blue-feathered, white hat in his first appearance.

Now wears a much cleaner cloak with the Vacuo insignia on the front and back, but still wears the same feathered cap as before.

He wields a rapier (Victorie) and Main Gauche (Honneur), which can be combined for a sturdier blade, or separated for versatility. Also wields a flintlock rifle (Justice) with a pouch of small dust crystals for reloading.

Prefers working honorably and taking actions that results in the least amount of damage. He has difficulty trusting other after being betrayed by people he thought were his friends. Hates selfishness and people who value Lien over others.

Semblance is "Inspire," which restores the depleted aura of allies he speaks to.

He was accepted into Atlas on recommendations, but lost the documents when he was mugged by his "friends," who were hired by Jacques Schnee to create a vacancy for Weiss to attend.

Mason Vulka

Human male, 18 years old, Stocky body type)

About Weiss' height (About 5'3")

Tanned/Dark skin, Red eyes, Black hair (Curly and burnt)

From Pisci, a small fishing village south of Vacuo

Wears a welding apron and gloves. Bronze prosthetic right arm and leg.

Uses his prosthetic arm (Caminus) as a weapon, as it can shift into different weapons and tools (swords, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, shields, skillets, spatulas, etc.)

Prefers home-made over store-bought. Constantly thinking of new inventions and ideas to improve said inventions. Spends most of his time in Shade Academy at the Forge.

Semblance is "Prometheus," a small flame he can conjure in his left palm. If he pinches his fingers and thumb together, he can create a welding torch.

Abandoned as a child by his mother at the believed order of his father, spent his childhood in a coastal cove until he found Remus wash ashore. He nursed him to life and the two were returned to Pisci by a local Huntsman. Gained his prosthetics from the local blacksmith and worked there until old enough to attend a Huntsman beginner school at 12 years old.

Inspired Hephaestus and Vulcan from Greek and Roman mythology, respectively, and CID from Final Fantasy IV.

Remus Lupin

Faunus male, 19 years old, Thin body type

About Ren's height (About 5'9")

Tanned skin, Green eyes, Blonde hair (Scruffy), Light brown wolf ears and tail.

From Pisci, a small fishing village south of Vacuo

Wears a red tank top with purple accents and cargo pants with various herbs in their own pouches. Has a large chest scar from his left shoulder to his right hip.

Wields a bo staff (Eliá) with a bullet shield on the center. Can contract the shield and split the staff into two smaller combat sticks.

Pacifist at heart, prefers the least violent path and only uses non-lethal force. Wary of other Faunus because of the White Fang, but does not hide his own features. Blindly trusts his best friend Mason.

Semblance is "Savage," which activates after experiencing intense anger and enhances his physical strength and stamina, but numbs his mental faculties, such as rational thought and pain tolerance.

Lived happily in Aka until their mother returned from the White Fang to recruit his brother. In an attempt to stop them, his brother cut him and pushed him into the ocean, leaving him for dead. He was restored to life by Mason.

Inspired by Remus from the ancient Roman folktale of the founding of Rome.

Yasha Tsuki

Human male, 19 years old, Lean body build.

About Adam's height (About 6'3")

Pale skin, Blue eyes, Black hair (Long)

Wears a black robe with purple accents and weighted armor underneath, and an amigasa with containers of medicine and poisons on his head.

From Aka, a small mountain village east of Haven Academy.

Wields a flintlock rifle that can split into dual short katana and a sheath (Kamiyato).

Won't hesitate to use underhanded tactics to achieve victory. Spends an hour every day to meditate and plan in made-up scenarios. Has admitted he's already planned for every Huntsman he's met, including his own team.

Semblance is "Orochi," which projects up to two additional arms and legs made of aura.

Graduated Shade Academy with Team AMRY, but fled from Haven Academy in his third year after he was framed for murdering his best friend Raiden Oga.

Inspired by Orochimaru from the Japanese folktale of The Gallant Jiraiya.

A mí me gusta más que nada por Subaru y Yui y unos cuantos personajes más, pero la historia ya me da igual, no le tengo mucho respeto al tardarse TRES JUEGOS para establecer bien todo el mundo (por esto prefiero Black Wolves Saga) y también porque me gustan algunas escenas dramáticas y finales malos.

Pero sobretodo me quedo por las escenas bonitas con los CDs más actuales y los viejos más con las escenas de mordidas... Que sinceramente dudo que alguien se escuchara las primeras tres sagas de CDs por el "argumento"

No soy realmente fan de los chicos mega crueles, pero sé que hay que sobrevivir a ellos en en juego para Dark Fate y a estos bastardos solo los justifico por ser vampiros, así que aunque me gusta mucho y colaboro bastante con traducciones, tampoco son mi franquicia favorita de Rejet (excepto Subaru, él es mi husbando).

Así que... La saga me gusta principalmente porque Yui es un amor, Subaru es top husbando y los soniditos de mordidas son geniales y tengo más material que con Midnight Jiang Shis y Tsuki Yasha. Eso xD.

Battle of Mt Oe Event - A Battle Between the Mountain and Sea

Yet another event part of the Ootakemaru invasion story and introduces SP Shuten and Hoshiguma Douji. It lasts for over a week, is the same as the Battle of Arakawa event. It also shares some small similarities with the False God event, which means the entire server must work together to clear certain goals ie no slacking! When the event starts, participating in it will be temporarily added as activities that count toward completing your dailies.

It has 4 main parts; Sealand Defense, Oniou Throne Showdown, Ashura Battlefield, and Bloody Skirmish.

Sealand Defense: Can only be done solo and costs 6 sushi/AP to do. Only your highest damage and score for each day matters. The boss format and daily max scores for each day is as follows;

Day 1 has a Netherworld Gate format with 10 stages. Daily max score is 8000.

Days 2-6 has a format like Netherworld Gate but not quite. It is a fight against a boss Ootakemaru, who you cannot do any damage to, and 5 minions. Once the 5 minions have been KO’d, another 5 will spawn until time runs out or you defeat a total of 15 waves of them. Daily max score is 20700.

During days 2-6 the enemies will gradually become tankier. So much so that no one on any of the servers could get the max score on day 6.

Oniou Throne Showdown: Starts on the 7th day of the event, continues until Ootakemaru is defeated, and is the final part of Sealand Defense. Costs 6 sushi/AP and 15 morale to do. You can do this without any morale, but you’ll do less damage. Unlike days 2-6, Ootakemaru can finally receive damage. He has 38tril HP (might be lowered for GL) and the 5 minions with him also have very high HP. The entire server must work together to defeat him and all 5 minions. When his HP reaches 50%, SP Shuten will join you as an ally and also be immediately added to the summon pool. When his HP reaches 10%, players will receive an animated icon frame if they can defeat him within 2 hours. However, if he is not defeated in that 2 hours Ootakemaru will restore his HP by 10%. He must be defeated to unlock the random SSR/SP in the exchange shop.

Bloody Skirmish: For TW&JP it was only active during 15:00-18:00 and 20:00-23:00 ingame time, for GL it will be active during 9:00-12:00 and 20:00-23:00 ingame time. During these times you can donate 15 materials to help strengthen allies, or you can fight the invading enemies (solo only but requires server-wide effort) which costs 2 morale and 6 sushi/AP to do. Donating rewards you with random mitama, evo materials and gold. Fighting gives the same rewards plus event currency. The goal is to clear the strategic goals eg; defeat the invading armies, keep an ally army alive long enough to fight a specific enemy army. There is a chance for participants to receive a random item from a reward box, and the more goals that are completed will increase all players’ damage during Oniou Throne Showdown. Remember to claim said rewards, if you get any, in your mail after a goal has been cleared!

Ashura Battlefield: 4 challenge areas will gradually unlock on the first 1-4 days. Each has 4 difficulties, costs 6-9-12 sushi/stamina and 5 morale to do and can be done solo or co-op. The format is very similar to Regional Oniou while the hardest difficulty is more like a skin dungeon. The hardest difficulty is solo only and can be done once. The higher the difficulty the better the drops are, however, when morale goes below 40 the drops become worse and enemies take less damage. Event currency, gold, evo materials, random mitama/souls and materials can drop from these challenges.

Unlike Tsuki-no-hime or Battle of Arakawa, there are no “stones” or “shells” to farm for Sealand Defense. Instead, there are 7 weapons that can be levelled up (max lv10) with materials from Ashura Battlefield, or be bought in the exchange shop daily with jade. All the weapons have a fixed effect and 2 fixed stats. To gain additional stats they must be levelled up, thankfully if you get garbage stats they can be rerolled. However, rerolling stats requires materials. Multiple shiki cannot be equipped with the same weapon at the same time. Weapon effects and their 2 fixed stats:

Hachimanshinkyuu - 八幡神弓 (bow): Unique Effect. ATK & DEF for all enemies is reduced by 10%. Stats - HP% & SPD

Futsunomitama - 布都御魂 (katana): At the start of every turn sacrifice 15% of current HP to increase ATK by 25% until the end of that turn. Stats - ATK% & Crit

Amenohabakiri - 天羽々斬 (katana): At the end of own turn heal an ally with the lowest current HP by 12% of the equipper’s max HP. Stats - HP% & Increased Healing

Amenonuhoko - 天沼矛 (spear): At end of own turn grant a shield equal to 15% the equipper’s max HP to an ally with lowest current HP. Stats - Increased Healing & SPD

Amenomakakoyumi - 天之麻迦古弓 (bow): Unique Effect. At the start of battle, begin with maximum onibi and ATK for all allies is increased by 40% for 2 rounds. Stats - Crit & Crit DMG

Amenohiboko - 天日槍 (spear): At the end of own turn dispell 1 debuff from all allies. Stats - HP% & RES

Kamutonotsurugi - 神度剣 (katana): At end of own turn, ATK is permanently increased by 4%, can be stacked infinitely. Stats - Crit DMG & Ignore DEF

(Fun fact: all these weapons are named after ones from Japanese mythology, so feel free to do some research on them :D)

Rewards for days 1-6 of Sealand Defense total scores are: 2210 jade, lots of gold, affection items for bio unlocks, regular orochi scales and gold orochi scales, demon souls, various special kekkai/realm cards, 3-5* white daruma, 1 black daruma, 2 blue summon tickets, 1 purple summon ticket, skin tickets, 5* transfer ticket, etc. These rewards are collected via mail ingame when the event ends. You need to get a total score of 40000 to receive all the items.

Most notable rewards in the points exchange are 2 blue summon tickets, 100 jade, 3-5* white daruma, a black daruma, gold orochi scales, random 6* mitama/souls, random SSR/SP, 2 loading screen pics etc. There are materials for upgrading the weapons that can be bought with jade. Also, there are rewards for doing Sealand Defense once a day. The random SSR/SP is only unlocked after Ootakemaru has been defeated.

Ranking rewards for Sealand Defense are;

Top 10 & 100 - animated icon frame, 2-3 blue summon tickets, 500-999 jade, 500-999 gold orochi scales

Top 20% - icon frame, 1-2 blue summon tickets, 100-300 jade, 50-300 gold orochi scales

Top 50% - icon frame, 70-90 jade, 130-150 orochi scales

The possible items you can get from reward boxes for clearing strategic goals in Bloody Skirmishes are;

Basic Reward Box: 3 blue summon tickets, 4* white daruma, 500k gold, 100 gold orochi scales, 50 demon souls,

Medium Reward Box: 5 blue summon tickets, 5* white daruma, 1mil gold, 200 gold orochi scales, 100 demon souls,

Luxurious Reward Box: 10 blue summon tickets, black daruma, 5* white daruma, 2mil gold, 300 gold orochi scales, 200 demon souls,

It makes no difference which of 4 challenge areas you do since they each drop the same rewards. So it’s best to do whichever one has the least annoying enemies.

The first team is for fighting weaker enemy armies led by random shiki (eg Yasha, Jorougumo, Hone Onna), while the other two teams are for fighting enemy armies led by Sealand NPCs or Ootakemaru.

Even though the rewards for clearing strategic goals is not guaranteed for everyone who participates, it’s still worth doing for the sake of increasing everyone’s damage during Oniou Throne Showdown.

Sealand Defense:

Day 1: 3 AOE attackers + 4th attacker/Kiyohime + Oitsuki/Zashiki

Day 2-6: 3 AOE attackers + Maki/YamaUsagi + Oitsuki

Day 2-3 & 5-6: N shiki/Mannendake + Oitsuki/Kaoru/Shiranui + Aoandon + SP Youtou + Orochi/Youkinshi (^ this team requires targeting)

Day 2-6: Takiyasha + 2 Youkinshi + Oitsuki + Aoandon/Kaguya

Day 2-6: 1-2 Ootengu + 1-2 Youkinshi + Oitsuki + Aoandon/Kaguya

Day 6: SP Tamamo + 2 Youkinshi + Oitsuki + Aoandon (^ requires multiple retries in case most of SP Tama’s attacks hit Ootake and not the 5 minions)

As for what weapons to equip your shiki with, use whichever ones that best suit your needs. So if your shiki need more crit, crit dmg or speed then give them weapons that provide those stats. However, you need to keep in mind that multiple shiki can’t be equipped with the same weapon.

Tamamo and SP Iba or any other similar shiki are only recommended for day 1. For day 3, your attackers need 130% crit or 110% crit if using the SP Youtou team. For days 2-6 all your shiki should have a bare minimum of 120 SPD to avoid letting Ootakemaru, or any minions, move before them.

Oniou Throne Showdown

2 AOE attackers (Ryoumen, Menreiki, Takiyasha, etc) + Kiyohime + Oitsuki + Kosode/Shoyou/Sakura

AOE attacker (Ryoumen, Takiyasha, Ootengu) + Kiyohime + Oitsuki + Ushi + Shoyou

3 Chin + 4th Chin/Kiyohime + Sakura

All Minions are KO’d: Shiranui + 2 Shuten + Kujira/Kachou + Ushi

All Minions are KO’d: 2 Iba/Sanbi + Oitsuki + Ushi + Shoyou

10% Phase: Iba/Sanbi + Oitsuki + Ushi + Shoyou + Shiro Douji (or any other shiki with a similiar type shield)

10% Phase: 2 Shuten + Shiranui + Ushi + Shiro Douji (or any other shiki with a similiar type shield)

Oniou Throne Showdown requires the entire server to work together to defeat Ootakemaru. Target order for the minions is; left Sealand youkai > right Sealand youkai > Kani-hime > Kujira > Kainin. Kainin’s confuse can be very annoying, so you must ensure she is constantly frozen. After 24 hours, or more specifically after maintenance, the passive effect that greatly increases their DEF and damage will disappear. Although there is no specific end date for this part of the event, the exchange shop will close 1 week after Oniou Throne Showdown starts (eg; on cn and jp/tw it started on oct 29, shop closes on nov 5).

Until Ootakemaru’s HP reaches 50% the SP Shuten summoning event will not begin and all summoning, including daily 500-day login achievement free pulls, will be temporarily locked. So if you want to summon, you better participate.

When his HP reaches 10%, he becomes capable of completely one-shotting your shiki with both his ST and AOE attacks. Using a shiki with a one-hit damage immunity shield, like Shiro Douji who can be used at any grade, is necessary during this phase. If you have a 6* Kujira then you can use him and Seimei’s shield as an alternative, but you’ll have to constantly turn Kujira’s skills on and off.

Sekiro Case Study: Kanji part 4 - Senpou Temple sugars

This...took a while. And effort. And cursing. A lot of cursing.

1. 阿攻の飴　(akou no ame) - Ako's sugar

The second kanji means “to attack”, same as in 攻撃力 (kougekiryoku), “attack power”. The biggest mistake one could make with the second kanji is to try to understand it literally. Meanings like “flatter”, “corner” or “Africa” are completely irrelevant here. This kanji is actually present in many Buddhist terms, including 阿修羅, asura (the same thing as “shura”), but to understand what it really means we have to learn a little about 仁王　(Niou) or 金剛力士　(kongourikishi). According to Buddhism accounts, those two warriors followed and protected the Buddha throughout his travels. The statues of these protectors are commonly placed in front of Buddhist temples as a way to ward off evil spirits. The first protector, Misshaku Kongou is always depicted with his mouth open as if pronouncing the sound “ah” (阿), which lead to him receiving a nickname 阿形 (agyou, where 形　means “shape”). Just as well, “Ah” or 阿 is the first letter of Sanskrit alphabet, symbolizing rebirth and beginning (it is also the sound of opening the mouth). Agyou himself, as the protector, is a symbol of wrath and violence. Wolf’s stance after taking the sugar and the item's icon are very similar to Agyou’s statues, so I’m pretty sure that’s where the 阿 from the name comes from.

2. 吽護の飴　(ungo no ame) - Ungo's sugar

護 means «protect». Naraen Kongou is the second kongourikishi, who is always depicted with his mouth shut. Consequently, his nickname is 吽形　(ungyou), where 吽 is the last letter of Sanskrit alphabet, symbolising “death” and “end” (and is also the sound of closing the mouth). Ungyou is the symbol of latent wrath and strength. Just as with Agyou, Ungo’s statues bear heavy resemblance to the Wolf’s stance after taking the Ungo’s sugar and this item’s icon.

3. 剛幹の飴 (goukan no ame) - Gokan's sugar

幹　comes from 体幹 (taikan), «posture». 剛 means “strong” and “sturdy”, which seems in line with the sugar itself, but we need to go deeper. I actually think it comes from 金剛夜叉明王 (Kongouyasha myouou), one of the Wisdom Kings, who are wrathful manifestations of Buddhas they swore to protect. Kongouyasha is known as “The Devourer of Demons”. This particular king is a symbol of strength and destruction of foolish human desires. At first, he was nothing but an evil spirit, who devoured humans, becoming an object of their dread. Buddha’s teachings changed his ways, and so he became a guardian deity, a guardian of wisdom Buddha Amoghasiddhi. That’s when he moved on to devouring demons and bad guys, earning his current nickname. During Sengoku era, he was revered as 「戦勝祈願の仏」(sensou kigan no hotoke) – a Buddha to pray to for the victory in battle. The reason I thought of this connection in the first place is the fact that statues of Kongouyasha are eerily similar to the Gokan’s sugar item. Still have no idea where the Wolf’s stance comes from, though.

4. 月隠の飴　(gachiin no ame) - Gachiin's sugar

From here on, things get rather uncertain, because I was unable to pin out exactly where the sugars are coming from with 100% certainty.

隠 doesn’t pose any problems, it means “to hide” or “to conceal”. As for the first kanji, 月(tsuki) means “moon”, or, more specifically “crescent”. One of the deities that have 月in their names is 月天(gatten, sanskr. Candra) also known as 月光　(gakkou, sanskr. Candraprabha). She’s often presented carrying a moon disk and accompanied by her sister 日光 (nikkou, sanskr. Sūryaprabha) who is, in turn, carrying a sun disk.

Another, a bit deeper potential connection is 水月観音 (suigetsukannon, “Gazing at the Moon in the water”), one of the 33 forms of Kannon, a god(dess) of compassion. As for her symbolism, “The imagery is akin to the symbolism of the mirror -- i.e., it represents the emptiness of all phenomena (i.e., life is illusion), for the mirror does not represent reality -- it merely provides a reflection of reality. Thus, the mirror is a metaphor for the unenlightened mind deluded by mere appearances.”

Seems rather fitting.

5. 夜叉戮の飴　(yashariku no ame) - Yashariku's sugar

戮 means 1) “to kill” 2) “to humiliate” 3) or “join together” (e.g. “join forces”). Take your pick. The rest of it is where things get really tough. By themselves, 夜叉 (yasha, sanskr. yaksha) are spirits, in Buddhism, they’re considered to be guardian deities. Now, some speculation. There’s a particular, well, let’s call it a unit of yaksha - 四夜叉 (yon’yasha, literally four yaksha) who protect one of the gates of Rinnouji Temple, 夜叉門 (yashamon).

They adhere to another deity called 青面金剛 (shoumonkongou), who over the course of history became the center of Japanese folk belief called 庚申 (koushin). A prominent symbol of this belief is Three Wise Monkeys (well, four monkeys) – “See no evil” (見ざる, mizaru), “Speak no evil” (言わざる, iwazaru), “Hear no evil” (聞かざる,kikazaru). (and “Do no evil”, しざる – shizaru) Just like the folding screen monkeys. 

The connection between the Yashiraku Sugar and the monkeys/hall of illusion may explain why the sugar is forbidden in the temple in the first place. Maybe some smart person could figure it out. There isn’t all the much resemblance between any of the statues and the sugar icon, sadly. Idk where that comes from.
