after watching low君's video about Jiao Liqiao, i really am amused by the thought of an imperial harem AU 😆 (also i cried when 《若梦》 started playing; Zhou Shen is unstoppable, and i genuinely do like JLQ as a character a Lot)
Di Feisheng as 皇后 empress
Li Xiangyi as 贵妃 imperial consort
Fang Duobing as ??? (也许小孩子不属于这种地方.......)
i feel like it'd work well too since Wang Herun played Wei Yingluo's daughter in Yanxi Palace: Princess Adventures~ a court setting suits her well~
anyway, i really have no plot for this. best case scenario, she finally meets someone who sees her for her worth, and her husbands get together with each other ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

my go to reccommendation is the story of yanxi palace (the full version on youtube, NOT princess adventures or whatever, the sequel on netflix) did you watch/enjoy it?
That's been on my list forever! I'll hopefully get around to it because I've heard nothing but good things. Thanks for the rec!

maybe??? One of my fav things in cdramas is that you aren't just told a character is a 'quirky genius' and they spit out a bunch of technical jargon, you get to see long narratives of scheming. Though of course there are plenty of fun martial arts adventure tales, lots of other stories where people win with brains over brawn.👏
Story of Yanxi Palace is an elite example. MY GIRL, MY ONE AND ONLY. Started from the bottom and ends at the top.
The Story of Minglan has a brilliant girl who quietly bides her time but slowly learns and uses her wits to get revenge and as much power as a concubine's noble daughter can have in that historical time period. 👌 👌
The Long Ballad is a Coming of Age story of where a young woman uses her wits and skills to surmount odds and amass power in a time of bloody sucession politics and war. Though she makes many mistakes along the way due to her youth, she is canonically industrious & clever (which allows her to cause a lot more chaos in the plotline than anyone planned for lol).
Dream of Splendor is a historical drama about 3 women in the underclass who use their determination & talents to go against the grain and gain success in the capital city. The main female lead has just her brains to depend on and is the leader of the friend group -- multiple times falls down and then picks herself up again.
Legend of Zhouhua is a palace drama about a woman who fights to play an active role in the court. I didn't get far into it but I think it's intended to be this style of narrative.
Princess Wei Young is flawed but written & framed as this genre
Both Legend of Anle and Jun Jiu Ling are a revenge tales with a female protagonist. I haven't watched them yet but I'm pretty sure they intend to be part of this genre.
is girl/woman outwits everyone around her and rises in power a cdrama genre?

Binging Yanxi Palace Princess Adventures and a bit perplexed tbh because I had gotten the impression from The Online that people were torn on Erqing Hellspawn vs hotass mongolian prince and.... look not only is the bald in the front hairdo doing NOBODY favors... but dude basically cackles maniacally and sneers like a 2-bit villian. Might as well be stroking his cat while making diabolical plans in his lair. Just a two-faced jerk who manipulates a very young, very spoiled imperial princess in every interaction with her. Can't ship it because the person she's interacting with is merely a mirage created to play on her weaknesses. Obviously she and hot prince will work it out in the end.
But lbr the real reason to binging this series epilogue is the glimpses of established married Emperor & Yinglou just being themselves. And multiple gratuitous mentions of beloved former empress, because can't let the viewer forget that Yingluo loves her to xxxxinfinity <3333333333333333333

Yanxi Palace Princess Adventures is interesting because in terms of screen time and character arc, Fu Kang’an would normally be the ML - he gets more character development and a (sort of) redemption arc, or at least repents, and she clearly likes him more. At the end, it feels like Zhaohua settles for La Wang Duo Er Ji, who has kind of SML energy.
But perhaps it is meant to parallel the original, where Fu Heng was clearly Wei Yingluo’s heart, at least until he married someone else and she moved on. I don’t think she started out loving the emperor - perhaps she grew into that love but she made the choice to join his harem to avenge Rongyin and she is detached enough that she thinks about how to manipulate his actions and emotions and she fully knows she is not (and can’t be) his first priority. I want that loyalty, that devotion, ride-or-die, I-will-always-protect-you, you’re-the-only-one-for-me love for her though. Maybe in their next lives…

why is this spinoff so fucking trash... like I know I’m jumping the gun seeing as I’m on episode two but zhaohua is such a whiny little thing I’m sharting. on one hand I do not expect her to be like yingluo seeing as she never grew up besides her, and she was doted on by the empress dowager since she was young. she grew up a princess so it’s expected her behavior is written as is so I’m not saying it doesn’t make sense I’m just saying she is annoying. the scenes with yingluo are still good like she’s still the cornerstone of this whole series regardless of it being bad or not. she can make it better, but yanxi palace as a drama is done like it should’ve ended with the original series. not with whatever this was for.

I really enjoyed how at the end of Yanxi Princess adventures has the morally ambiguious lover change his ways but his female interest cannot forget the fact he set her up to be gang raped to get revenge on her mother. Yeah, He rescues her last minute because he cann’t go through with it. However the incident is still enough to give Zhaohua ptsd and it plays a role in her rejection of him in favor of the prince.
I accept that fact that he’s changed but i like the fact her feelings aren’t brushed off for the sake of his. If that makes sense in a lot of tv, i’ve watched it feels like characters abused by their love interests are gas lit into taking them back because their the main pairing they have to be together.  Here, Zhaohua is allowed to want better and she picks the Prince who never lied or abused her trust. Not because she’s a good girl  but because she’ll allow no one to disrespect her. I think that’s beautiful.

Yanxi Palace: Princess Adventures
One of the most satisfying things to come out of the Yanxi Palace: Princess Adventures was the exposure of Erqing’s misdeeds and the subsequent downfall of her lover / partner in crime.
There were a lot of vagueness surrounding Erqing and Fuk’anggan in the original show. Naturally so, she was not the main character and was killed off rather unsatisfactorily midway through the series. Erqing claimed that she slept with the Emperor, and that he ‘took advantage of her’, which to be honest, while he could have, he was also really drunk that night. That particular night, Erqing herself dressed up as a maid and purposely sneaked in under the guise of serving the emperor. She did so primarily to punish the Empress and Fuheng as she blamed Rongyin for ‘never helping her’ and doting on Yingluo more than her and Fuheng for being in love with YingLuo. She could not have Fuheng’s heart or person and became mad with ideas of punishing and taking revenge against them all. While we would never know whether she was forced into it / if she seduced the emperor or if they even really did have relations or otherwise, we know that Fuk’anggan was a product of Erqing’s tryst with her brother in law, Fuheng’s half brother.
I am pretty sure that during their marriage, Fuheng never touched Erqing because he knew of her schemes and hated her very existence. Therefore he knew that the son she had was not his. But the fact that he continued to cover up for her and raised Fuk’anggan like his own deserves a mention. Fuheng is a genuinely good person and it was a pity (but understandable) that he died because he was, yet again, helping Yingluo out of love.
Of course, a great portion of this was all made up and dramatized. In reality, Fucha Fuheng was married to one of the Maidens of the Yehe Nara clan (葉赫那拉氏) and Fucha Fuk’anggan was indeed his son with her. And unless I am very much mistaken, he had other concubines as well and fathered at least 4 sons and most likely had daughters too. While he did die of Malaria as mentioned in the drama, it was due to the unsuccessful Burma campaign and not because he was out in the remote wilderness there searching for a cure for Yingluo’s illness. Erqing’s character & background was fictionalized as was Fuqian’s (Fuheng’s brother)
