the dangers of a slipper
pairing: jingyuan x fem!reader
genre: fluff, crack
summary: slippers are a dangerous weapon, even more so when you're the one holding it
word count: 704
a/n: wrote this cus i was inspired by that one meme of the mom scolding the son and the father intervening, but both end up being scolded.
he should’ve known that he was going to be in trouble, the moment he let yanqing run off and go fight in such a dangerous duel. word travelled fast in the xianzhou, so it was no surprise that the moment yanqing and the general stepped into the house, they were in danger.
“yan. qing.” your stern voice calls from the top of the stairs. a shiver of fear runs down the boy’s spine at your tone. sure, he was the strongest swordsman of all of xianzhou, but even so, he was terrified of his mother figure.
hanging his head guiltily, yanqing steps forwards, not daring to make eye contact with you.
from the side, jingyuan watches yanqing get scolded by you, his eyes are filled with mirth and amusement as he relishes in the drama. yanqing, kneeling obediently at your feet, head bowed in shame, shoots pleading looks at jingyuan.
finally, jingyuan decides to step in, trying to save his trusted little aide from your fearful wrath. with a sigh and subtle shake of his head, jingyuan steps into the firing line your line of sight.
“now now love,” he began, voice smooth, though his hands were clammy with fear. “yanqing is quite capable. after all, his master is yours truly.” he boasted, puffing his chest out in confidence.
unfortunately for him, he doesn’t win the fight. instead, he finds himself a victim of the deadly slipper, a swift but light bop to his head sening him dropping to his knees, mirroring yanqing’s posture of submission. his joy has been knocked off into one of sheepish submission.
anyone who sees such a scene would find it hilarious. the most powerful swordsman and the dozing general of xianzhou, both quiet and docile as they listen to your scolding. the proud, young swordsman and jingyuan, fearless dozing general, forced into reflection under your watchful gaze and the threat of the merciless slipper.
jingyuan, who finds the courage to lift up his head, assuring you that it wasn’t a big deal. his only response is another ruthless bonk on the head from your slipper. silenced and cowed, he lowers his head again, quietly reflecting on his actions. to yanqing, jingyuan can only offer a meek smile, as his hand rubs the tender spot where your slipper had made its mark.
to add salt to his wounds, even the general’s ever-loyal companion had betrayed his trust. when jingyuan spots his loyal companion, mimi, pass by, he shoots her a pleading look, hoping that she would bravely put herself between her owner and the threatening lady looming over them.
to his hurt and disbelief, mimi spares him a single glance of disinterest, before turn her tail and plopping down beside your feet with a huff of disapproval, even going as far as shooting him a condescending glare. jingyuan’s shoulders slump, the fight fleeing his posture.
how heartwrenching.
“mimi,” jingyuan groaned in exasperation. “what have i ever done to wrong you? did your mother give you more treats behind my back again?”
as though to mock him, mimi rubs lovingly against your leg, glee sparkling in her mischievous eyes. the large, white lion lets out a yawn, snuggling closer, as though saying, “you might’ve raised me, but boss lady here is better than you.”
letting out a dramatic gasp, jingyuan feigns a collapse. unfortunately for him, it doesn’t give him extra sympathy points. instead, he receives another repremanding whack from the slipper.
yanqing spares a single side-eye at his general, pity and suppressed amusement dancing across his face. it seemed that even the general was powerless in the face of big boss. with a pout, jingyuan sat back onto his knees, the duo casting looks of mutual pity at each other.
‘boss lady is scary,’ they telepathically communicated, determination etched on their faces. ‘next time, let’s not get caught.’
thwack. thwack.
“i know what the two of you are thinking.” you warned, slipper pointed at their faces. “don’t you dare, i’ll have mimi watch you and keep you out of trouble.”
tomorrow morning, the duo would have to explain why they have matching bumps on their head.
how embarrassing for them. well, maybe they should’ve thought twice before being stupid.

Are there more stories about what demons Erlang has faced? Or more stories about him or where his character is included? I'm aware of Journey to the West, fsyy, the story with his mother and Lotus Lantern, but I was wondering if there were other stories where his character appears.
There are a lot of stories with him but they are more like legends than like narrative tales so to speak. Xiyouji, FSYY, and Lotus Lantern are novels and plays that allow full narratives that Erlang Shen features in but none really show the full extent of his character as he is more of a feature character than ever the protagonist.
Erlang's control of water is Erlang Shen's first and greatest achievement was water control and water control and made him a famous water god. With Erlang God's water control as the core, it radiates into legends such as killing dragons and slaying dragons.
Carrying mountains to catch the sun was from the Kaixi Period of the Song Dynasty, the "Inscription of the Induction of King Zhaohui Lingxian" describes the Erlang Shen as "the majesty of disturbing the mountain to take advantage of the sun, and the bravery of crossing the sea to capture the dragon.
The legend of Erlang Shen leading his divine soldiers and generals to search the mountains and succumb to demons can be found in the volume "Searching the Mountains", also known as the "Erlang Shen Searching the Mountains".
In the Five Dynasties, there is a legend about Erlang capturing an evil dragon. "Shu Shu": "The New Year's Banquet in June, "Guankou Divine Team" by Jiaofang Haiyu. The image of the two dragons fighting, the sky and the earth were dark for a moment, and there was heavy rain and hail. The Qing Dynasty's "Sichuan General Chronicle" locks the dragon: " It is said that Erlang locked the evil dragon in it. When frost falls and water falls, you may sometimes see it locked in the clouds."
In the Song Dynasty, there were a lot of themes of Erlang killing dragons. The Erlang who spent money usually rode an eagle and followed the dog. The entourage held a bow and stood a three-pointed two-edged sword beside him to subdue the dragon or the dragon transformed into a human body.
In the early days, Erlang Shen's divinity mainly came from Li Bing, who controlled floods. Guankou Erlang Shen controlled wind and rain, and Li Erlang's main deeds were also to capture dragons and control floods.
The "Stele Record of the Divine Blessing King" written by Zhou Hu of the Southern Song Dynasty (1170-1231) records that in 1206 AD, that is, the second year of Kaixi, Erlang Shen helped him fight against the Jin Dynasty and achieved a major turning point. Therefore, Emperor Ningzong of the Song Dynasty named Erlang Shen "Saint Martyr Zhaohui to protect the country".
As the belief in Erlang Shen spread widely, the priesthood of Erlang Shen also expanded as he was seen as a protector of the country's spirit. The "Nangong County Chronicle" of the Republic of China quoted Lu Zhongfu from Jin Zhangzong as saying: "In the autumn of the fifth year of Zhenglong (1160), the giant locusts covered the sky and ate all the acres. There were reports of hunger everywhere, the price of grain soared, and county people rushed to pray at the temple of Erlang Shen. The locusts dispersed and did not stay in the area. Fortunately, they were harmless at this time."
Erlang Shen is not only a god with vast supernatural powers and remarkable spiritual responses, but he was also regarded as the god of drama in the Ming Dynasty and was worshiped by Liyuan.
The Cuju industry also respects Erlang as the god of the industry and follows his character of playing games in the world.
Erlang God was revered as the "Lord of Sichuan" and became the god who protected the people of Sichuan from living and working in peace and contentment.
Song Zhang Tangying's " Sichuan Prayer " records: "(Qiande) in the second year of August, (Wang) Yan patrolled the north, and Prime Minister Wang Kai judged the guards of the six armies. The banners and flags were inexhaustible for hundreds of miles. Yan's military uniforms, Wearing golden armor, a beaded hat, and brocade sleeves, he holds a bow and carries an arrow. The people look at him and say he is like a 'guan-kou god'." Erlang Shen is equipped with a hound, an eagle, and a slingshot. It is a standard image of the hunting god, capable of restraining birds, beasts, mountain spirits, and wild monsters.
Because Erlang Shen carried a slingshot, he was attached to the function of delivering children by later generations. Because the slingshot is homophonic with "birth", it means birth. Almost every Erlang temple has people seeking children, which is the basic priesthood of Erlang Shen.
Tianqi was built in southern Fujian during the Chongzhen period of the Fengshan Ancestral Temple in the Ming Dynasty, the belief in Erlang Shen has formed a water god worship with strong local characteristics of southern Fujian in southern Fujian. There are now three statues in the Fengshan Ancestral Temple, which are called "Ambassador", "Second Ambassador" and "Third Ambassador", and "Ambassador" is the Erlang Shen in people's minds
I'm taking this all from his page so if you want a more detailed explanation I would suggest looking it into yourself because there is SO MUCH information about Erlang Shen being such a well-known figure and hero of legend that no way I can fit it all in one post but I hope this gives people an idea just how grand Erlang Shen's legend is and just how rich in both history and lore he is!

Immortal Samsara makes an interesting point for the saying "love is the death of duty". Because Love and Duty are heavily interwoven in this show for the stakes of said duty are so high that love cannot exists without fulfilling it. Sovereign Lord Ying Yuan out of commission = heavenly realm on the edge of breakdown should any crisis occur whatsoever. The parents arc mirrors that too. Had his mother Ran Qing not decided to fulfil her duty Xuan Ye wouldn't be stopped like ever because clearly this family is the only one of any real influence over the entire world. Poor unfortunate souls really. 😆
So Ran Qing might actually have a point in forbidding love because with stakes like these it can lead to catastrophic deeds - it DID for a whole bunch of futures where Xuan Ye won. But Ying Yuan is also right for undoing that because Love is also what can make you the happiest you have ever been. What was his immortality even worth considering the listless life he lived before Yan Dan? Which also stands in contrast to his father who wanted immortality beyond everything else. But the love he held for Ran Qing made him happiest in the end because a world where he won and she died was also not worth living in.

Twelve Moons and a Fortnight by stiltonbasket
Post-CQL Canon 51 chapters (complete) 290K words
It is then that he notices that the child in front (a little boy around nine years old, if Lan Wangji had to guess) has the hilt of a jeweled dagger protruding from between his ribs, and a small novice’s bow clutched in his hands with an arrow still nocked to the string.
“They’re not alive,” Li Shuai gasps, clawing her way upright against one of the pavilion’s four corner pillars as the ghosts keep coming towards them. “That’s sixth shidi, the one with the bow, and our third shimei there in the pink—but they’re not corpses, I don’t know how they could have—”
The ghosts come to a halt, then, standing right in front of Lan Wangji’s ward with pensive looks on their faces. Some have clear death-wounds in their chests, and one of the boys wears a gown covered with dull black blood from the cruel gash in his throat—but all of them are looking straight at Li Shuai, and their lips shape her name with open wistfulness; some of the older ones call her A-Shuai, and the children call her Li-shijie, and then they nod once in Lan Wangji’s direction before stepping closer to the ward and disappearing into it.
He feels their spiritual energy pouring into the seals before he sees it in the ward, reeling back at the sudden shock of ninety-one ghostly golden cores taking up arms beside his—ready to defend their sect in death as they could not do in life, and then he finally understands why the land-eater went unnoticed for so long. The ghosts must have been suppressing it until its power surpassed theirs, and then they sought out Wang Hai for help when they could do nothing more—but for them to have taken shape like this, in something resembling their living selves even though their bodies must long since have rotted away—it should have been beyond them to do such a thing, unless…
“Auntie!” Xiao-Yan screams. “It’s Wei-zongzhu! He’s coming back!”
As Author stiltonbasket notes, this is the CQL (The Untamed) Universe with a few differences, the major one is that A-Qing is still alive during and after the Yi City events and is being treated for the damages Xue Yang did to her. There are other differences, given it's The Untamed version of the story. Second most important being that the Confession in Guanyin temple does not occur.
The story is written with both narrative point-of-view and letters to and from those involved. The style is most effective in moving the story forward.
Twelve Moons and a Fortnight begins months after the events of Guanyin temple. Lan Zhan is Chief Cultivator and Wei Wuxian has spent the following months near Gusu. He meets regularly with the Lan Juniors in Caiyi. It is at one of these meetings that he is told Jin Ling asked him to speak with Jiang Wanyin about something.
Wei Wuxian becomes Wei-zhongzhu, acting as Jiang sect leader while Jiang Wanyin aids Jin Ling in taking controlling power from the various factions in Lanling.
There is a brief stop in Yunping during an official tour of Yungmeng, where Wei Wuxian collapses and is taken somewhere to rest, which results in the adoption of a child, the eventual foundation of a lady's refuge, and the mystery of Wei Ying's illness begins.
There is the romance between Wei Ying and Lan Zhan that everyone except Wei Ying can see so plainly.
The world of Yungmeng is fleshed out in detail as the seasons pass. There is a land eater, and a mystery about its origins. Was a recent bout of illness in the area a result or the cause of the land eater? Did it have something to do with the summoning ritual Mo Xuanyu used to bring back Wei Wuxian? Why is Wei Wuxian having nightmares of Mo Xuanyu? There are discussions about golden cores and core sickness ... and an upset young child who has already seen one mother die.
The story is not centered only on Yungmeng. There are other important events occuring. Lanling is brought under control. In Gusu, Lan Xichen has healed the wounds Maiden Qing received as part of the Yi City story arc that precedes the story. There are junior shenanigans, including a rainy night and a bonfire involving Lan Xichen and the juniors.
We learn of Nie Mingjue's several Qi deviations. And the depth of the many betrayals of Jin Guangyao that still affect the living.
The stakes for all involved become higher as illness risks killing Wei Wuxian before he can reach a happy ending.
The resolution to most of what's going on hits like a hammer.
There is a night of terror, questioning using the qin language, reveals through empathy, several tense chapters with warning about body horror. And healing. Followed by 8 chapters in which some secrets are finally exposed, mysteries resolved and there are weddings to attend.
Author stiltonbasket has provided a number (47) of tales related to this one. Of these, one of the most poignant for me was The Trouble with Talismans: a Treatise on Time-Travel by Young Master Lan Xiaohui (Age 6)

🍬 anon here
just wanna say thank you for doing my request 🥰 I didn’t expect more anons to like my idea and see more continuation 😭🙇♀️ glad you enjoyed the idea! I was actually going to ask you what you think of jing yuan bringing you around yanqing? after seeing how you treat him so nicely and good with children- jing yuan thinks you will make a lovely mother to his children and tells you he wants to make a baby one day 😊 reader complaining it’s too early to think about that, but of course jing yuan just says it will be fine. if it happens by accident he will be the most loving and caring father you could ask for, so it’s no problem 👀
TW: yandere, pregnancy
Thank you too, many people including me like your idea <3<3 jing yuan who sent harassing messages is awesome (♡˙︶˙♡)
As for your question, Jing Yuan will definitely find an excuse to take you to see baby Yan Qing, like an introduction. He is my adopted son^^ Now working in Cloud Knights. Don't worry, don't look at him so young, he can already command dozens of swords flying and fighting^^ You are still a little worried and start taking care of him unconsciously. Jing Yuan noticed it, and the idea of giving Yan Qing a sibling appeared in his mind💡🌟!
He knows you can be a loving and supportive mother. He tells you about the baby's plans and of course you complain - like it's just the beginning of the relationship. Why did you already talk about having a baby?💀💔 Dude even skipped talking about marriage because Jing Yuan subconsciously thinks that you will definitely marry him, and there is no other choice. Jing Yuan tells you not to worry, as you said, he will be the most loving and caring father, never absent from the babies's life and pampering and teaching them.

Fangs of Fortune episodes 1-3
Random thoughts as I was watching.
Spoilers under cut.
ok wow, what an entrance. This is the first time I've seen Hou Minghao have so much physical presence. Usually his characters don't have much intimidation factor even if they're powerful - like I love Wang Ye but he looks tiny next to Zhuge Qing even as he's dominating the field, and Baili Dongjun looks like a 公子哥儿 (rich kid). And Wu Xie is, well, Wu Xie. Here, though, he is believable as a 1000-year old demon who can crook his fingers and kill everyone around him.
I think the costuming is a big factor - he's usually in the belted young master outfits that emphasize his slim waist, whereas here he wears cloaks and layers that conceal his figure. (The big furs remind me of a cat puffing up to look bigger :D) But also that slow deliberate stride. A different kind of murder strut, but very very effective.
The umbrella! Special shout-out to that fantastic prop. I adore the little red beads. Also, sheathing his sword in the umbrella??? Um....
omg the tension between them is delicious - are you satisfied with your gift (me)? now are you satisfied? (holding up his chained wrists). *fans self* I am looking not at all respectfully.
I'm glad to see Chen Duling with a little more sass - so far I've seen her as the sad ex (MLC), the sad wife/mother (MJTY), and as the sad orphan (ALHJ - though I only watched to ep 8 so far). I was enjoying her banter and shipping her and the lying demon :( Except what the heck was she doing putting two heaping spoonfuls of salt (sugar) in her noodles? Wasting food!
She still got nerfed, though. *sigh*
Her meeting with Zhu Yan is hilarious - he is so impressive as he just sets himself free, demonstrating his immense power, taunting Zhuo Yichen - looking him in the eye as he saunters around the dungeon and locks him in - that magnificent walk down the halls as he shows he can control all the jailers. Then he's like a kicked puppy with Wen Xiao when she drugs him and threatens to keep doing it.
It's so interesting the way he interacts with her versus Zhuo Yichen - he often 賣慘 with her - acting pitiable so he seems less powerful, like pretending to stay drugged (when he's able to just pop up) or pretending to be passed out on the floor when she comes to bring the token him. Versus with Zhuo Yichen he's usually showing off how powerful he is and how much knowledge he has. (There's so much flirting with both of them, though!)
Such a death wish though :((((((((
Clearly Zhuo Yichen is going to regret that vow in the future.
Another gorgeous entrance - blowing up the water jugs and then pacing through, and I adore the bit where he points at the damage and is like, isn't it obvious?
Oh the poor naive fools - the minute I heard the bad guy say just put your thumbprint at the end I knew what was going to happen. But it really irritated me - who stamps (signs) any document at the end, leaving a huge expanse of blank space? And they knew it's their enemy putting it in front of them: at this point they should be at the highest wariness. (I realize it's duplicate originals, so they could argue against any tampering, but at the same time, why take the risk, especially if the emperor seems to favor their enemy?) I hate plot points that rely on our heroes being making an obvious mistake. I mean, they are already using a magical plot. Why not just make it some other type of magic to change the words entirely?
Ah, is this another contract that the signers will regret?? Wow he's such a flirt. Leaning in like that to take her pen??? She has immense self control!
Oh my, this show really has a thing about gorgeous men in chains, hm? The jealous ex appears! Very much getting that vibe of crazy ex boyfriend here.
Yowza when Zhu Yan said kneel.... wow. Hot.
Awww and he got the fish demon medicine? He's such a secret softie.
Oh ho, here we go with the jealous ex Li Lun.
Geez, did he get even hotter with the demon marks????
Ok, when I first saw the trailer I was not vibing with his style - I saw the director got some criticism for making the actors ugly. But I think it really works - Zhu Yan is very alien, very powerful, and very very very very hot.

fate/grand order: beyond dreams of a slumbering princess ! fgo master verse, the default verse for this continuity. one of the masters stuck in cryostasis. due to a special ability, she has taken over the body of one of the staff members and is preparing to summon her own servant.
fate/grand order: a midsummer night's dream ! fgo servant verse. the pseudo-servant vessel of titania (alter), a ruler/caster servant embodying malicious fae of legends and folklore, similar to nursery rhyme and children's tales.

anonymous asked : Facts about Mo Yuan?
Son of mother god and Father God (in fact, the only ancient god that was conceived from parents as far as we know, barring his twin Yehua), Mo Yuan’s “real” form is a black dragon. As Father God adopted and mentored multiple other ancient gods at the time he also has an adoptive sibling/sibling-like relationship to Zhe Yan and Donghua, though Tang Qi’s description of his relationship to Donghua specifically cited in a q&a is “like friends from university.” Father God opened a school in the Water Marsh and collected representatives of every clan as students in the hopes of maintaining peace between the five clans - Mo Yuan was among these students, and became classmates with Shao Wan and Donghua and Zhe Yan and Bai Zhi, etc. Despite his reputation of being orchid-like (idiom for being pure of heart, elegant, polite and all things gentlemanly), because of the clan rivalry between Heaven and the Demons, he seemed to get into conflicts with Shao Wan often as a student - not necessarily fights, per se, but they were constantly on the school paper for their perceived rivalry. He was said to have taken the best notes in school.
Father God held high expectations for Mo Yuan to continue his work of keeping peace between t the clans, but when war broke out between the five clans, Mo Yuan joined the war to end it. He did this to keep Shao Wan from sacrificing herself to send the Mortal Clan to the ten billion mortal realms to ensure their safety from the ravages of the war between the rest of the clans. In 700 years, he ended the war and defeated the ghost and sprite clans. The demon clan fell apart into factions because Shao Wan opened the door to the mortal realms anyway and feathered. Mo Yuan became the king of the gods after the war, and he invested the gods, giving them each titles and duties corresponding to those titles. Three months after that he disappeared, and became missing for a long time. It’s later said that he went to the Water Marsh and began to live there like a hermit.
As of currently the timeline between that time and the present timeline of the novels has been unfilled, but - cut to 300,000 years later - Mo Yuan is the war god of Heaven. He has opened a school for men in Kunlunxu, is a connoisseur for good wine, and generally seems to believe in keeping peace between the clans. He appears to be a role model for the young immortals of the Celestial Clan - it’s considered an honor to be said to be similar to Mo Yuan (Yehua and Lian Song have both been “complimented” like so, though neither were particularly comfortable with it). He “died” sealing Qing Cang away when the Ghost Clan reignited the war, but was then resurrected through the Bai Qian and Yehua’s efforts. He went to Qingqiu as part of Yehua’s entourage for Yehua and Bai Qian’s wedding. As of the last time he was mentioned in the chronology of the novels, he lent Kunlunxu to become a “can” of sorts for the poisons Miaoluo created in the Starlight Ward in Pillowbook.

he sighs. ' i'll sing. as i am, at that. that's what you wanted, right? you won't suddenly change your mind again? ' tender guilt; a wrenched brow as he gently attempts to lay the other downwards. despite what ways they had always done for him, he can't bear to cover the other's eyes or keep a horrible palm at their cheek, though he still gingerly runs the edge of a rough finger along the pharaoh's softer mien in a pawing, repetitive touch.
' a lullaby ... is something that's supposed to be sung earnestly and kept close to the heart. i don't have anything like that from china, so anything i'd bother to sing would feel meaningless and empty. the only thing i do have ... ' his cheeks flare. he flushes and burns yet bravely does not turn his head from the other. ' sorry. it's the one you've always sung to me before. '
was it foul? did he dare? to lay his hands on what might not have rightfully belonged to him, a melody merely lent, belonging rightfully to ozymandias's blood and kin. yan qing can't help but expect fury and outrage . ' it's not my song... but it'll be my voice. ' only now does he look away, fleeing terrified from his own admission, nevertheless landing one last glance upon the other. ' does it ... w-would it --- ah, is it going to mean anything to you ? '
❝OF COURSE NOT. WHY would I?❞ Ozymandias was a rather decisive individual, and thus, once a decision was made me often stuck to it unless convinced otherwise. Yan Qing of all individuals should know that much, but he was aware of the other’s innate shyness. Many may think him a raucous outlaw, however, the fact of the matter was that he had always been rather bashful. When stripped of a role, he would be just as he was right now, and there was always something altogether endearing about bearing witness to this sight. ❝It would be easy to receive my wish if you transformed into another, but that is so dull. No, no, I much prefer to hear such melodious words pass from your lips. Not another’s.❞ Mind set in stone, he would not budge from where he stood in this regard. Saying nothing at first, he listened to the other’s words with a faint, yet curious tilt of his head. The only indication of some hint of surprise being the faint rising of brows. Ah…he should not be surprised at all, though, should he? After all, of course Yan Qing would have no such thing that can offer comfort in the dead of the night when shadows seemed more frightening.
None had given him this gift.
A lullaby was something bestowed to another; a heartfelt gesture to chase those shadows away and bring warmth even in the coldest of nights. For Yan Qing, that was just a dream of another, for he never had that warmth – never had that thing that could make those shadows recoil in their corners. It certainly did not help that the Assassin thought themselves unworthy of even being given something as basic as this. Lips curling into a smile, he could not help that flare of fondness felt. ❝Then sing that if you must. Not as my mother. Just as you, yourself. I will accept it. You need not worry and think your own voice unworthy of my ears. If anything, it is what I prefer.❞ He was one who disliked falsehoods. As one who had been surrounded by it, there was a kind of honesty in a gesture like this one. It was a gift to be offered from the heart for the sake of giving it. Not a means to gain his favor; a tool to be lauded over his head in the far flung future as some unwanted debt.
❝It would mean much and more.❞

〝 WHY ? 〞
All but one second required to process the question before his eyes are immediately narrowing in suspicion. 〝 What dubious reason could you possibly have for taking a sudden interest in my family ? 〞 It’s a trap. Some ploy or trick of kinds. A calculated intrusion of his private life sure to end in a headache one way or the other. Because this menace always finds a way, doesn’t he ? Most unfortunate for him, that Wolfram is already well aware and conscious of every questionable dynamic and quirk within his family ( beloved though it was ) , and has no plans of letting his tongue run loose and reveal anything damning enough to serve as further fodder for ridicule !
〝 My father passed some seventy years ago, but he was a valiant, reputable noble lord of distinguished heritage. 〞 And someone likely to have qualified, beyond a shadow of a doubt, and by Yan Qing’s offensively incomprehensible logic, as something of a show dog himself. 〝 My mother is a benevolent Queen and one among the most proficient magic wielders in our great kingdom. 〞 As well as negligent, free - spirited to a fault, unbound by all laws of propriety and ill - fitted for a throne. But that remains unsaid, all replaced by a pause wherein squinted eyes run up and down, down and up company’s form, the next piece of objective truth spoken with a certain degree of dismay, 〝 I'm sure she would take a fancy to someone like you. But most importantly, 〞 Jab, jab, jab goes an accusatory index finger square into nuisance’s chest, 〝 I thought I told you NOT TO CALL ME A SHOWDOG ! 〞

@tenkoseiensei / Yan Qing said . . .
' if any of those evil spirits are mean or make fun of you, ' he says, an over-thousand year old evil spirit himself, ' tell me, an' i'll definitely find a way to kill them. good luck! '
Out of all of the friends he made – none from school, of course – Yan Qing was probably one of his favorites. Rather than the endless screaming or the begging for help, or how it hurts, or how they don’t want to die like a broken record as some of the other spirits, he was actually able to do more than linger. He could talk, converse properly, and gave a show of support that not even his own teachers bothered with anymore.
“They’re fine. It’s some of the others at school mostly.” After all, little Keiji could only view them all as largely the same whether dead or alive, never having simply learned otherwise. Gaze lowered as he picked at the fraying edge of his shirt that he wore under his gakuran; getting new clothing had been unquestioningly out of the budget. All the money they had went for his mother’s medical care and other bills. “Would you kill someone from there for me?”

Love and Leather
Chapter 1
Introductions
Hello, my name is Cai Xia, and this is the story of how I fell in love with the Emperor and became the Empress of the Qing Dynasty. But first, I would like to introduce my family, teacher, hometown, and where my story begins. My family has lived in Chunsu, a somewhat wealthy town about three days from the capital, for generations, and it is where my parents met and fell in love. They met when they were teens and fell in love not long after. My parents were twenty years old when they married, and then they had my older brother, Cai Yan, a year later.
I was born five years after my brother Yan, and my family could not be happier to finally have a daughter after trying for so long. Now my family has been running a leather tanning/selling business since the founding of Chansu, and the whole family has been working it ever since. Even now that the Cai family is one of the five wealthiest families in Chansu and can hire people to do the work for us, we are still working in and around the business to ensure the quality of our leather is top-notch and second-best to none. My father, Cai Bo, and my brother Yan work in the tanning shop, providing the leather is clean and sellable to the public, while my mother, Cai Hui, and I work in the shop selling the leather to the people of Chansu.
We sell our leather to all people in town and travelers who are just passing through, but my favorite customer is Mr.Ling, a devoted customer, and my brother and I’s teacher since we were old enough to learn how to read and write. He is the one who instilled in me a love of reading and a thirst for knowledge of any kind. Mr.Ling is also the one I go to when I get myself into situations that require wisdom that I will not have until I am as old and wise as Mr.Ling. And lately, it feels like I have done nothing but pester my poor teacher with the most difficult challenge I have ever faced and will ever face. The son of the town magistrate, Xiang Chen, is a rude nobleman who uses his father’s position to terrorize the town and make people bend to his will.

Game, Set, Love: A Yu Qing Romance - Chapter 5
The next day arrived in a flash.
Qi Lin was the only one left in her classroom she stared longingly out the window when a cough caught her attention.
"Siyang! How'd you know I was here? I'm sorry for making you wait," she expressed. Packing up her bag as quickly as possible, when Siyang replies with a stoic face, "There's no rush. I just went here since Zhou Zhi said I could find you here."
"Okay, but I'm done packing already. Let's go to the office," she says, stopping in front of him as she gives him a warm smile. Siyang just stared at her dazed with his still poker face as he processed what she just said.
As they were walking towards the office, they passed by some students, who started gossiping at the sight of the two of them. Qi Lin starts to unconsciously hug herself. Siyang took notice and moved closer to her as his way of comforting her, but that only raised more looks from the students. Luckily for Qi Lin, they're at the front of the office already.
Siyang, being the gentleman that he is, opens the door for her. Qi Lin, on the other hand, can only bow at him for the gesture and hurries inside. Once she made it inside, she was finally able to breathe in deeply and try to compose herself. "Are you okay?" Siyang asks worried that maybe he was also a factor as to why she was agitated.
"Just fine," she muttered. Siyang nods and starts walking towards the stairs, while Qi Lin remains in her position, staring at her feet. "Aren't you coming?" He invites her. This broke her out of her train of thought and replied, "Coming!" and followed him up the stairs.
They settled themselves at the center of the room.
"Sooo. What are we gonna talk about again?" she starts.
"I just want to ask if you're interested in becoming our manager, since you're already helping out Coach Qi, why not make it official?" he said,
"I don't know about that." She instinctively answers as she stares at the ceiling.
"You don't have to decide right away, I just want to ask you and maybe take some tasks off Ah-Yan's plate."
She ponders some more then looks at him in the eye asking, "What tasks will I need to do if ever I agree to this?"
Siyang thinks of the tasks that he, Yan Zhiming, and Dayong have been doing before answering, "It would mostly be arranging some practice matches within the club, and some training regimens for the regulars and other team members. Collecting data about the other teams."
Qi Lin thinks and looks down at the table.
The advantage would be I could spend more time with Mom and spend my time on more useful things. The disadvantage would be hmmm... None? maybe less time to myself, which I just use to sleep so-
She then meets the Captain's eye, "Sure, I'll try my best."
Coach Qi then enters the room, "I see you're getting acquainted with the Captain well."
"Yeah, Captain Siyang was just asking me if I'd like to be their manager and I agreed."
"That's wonderful," her mom replied to her and turned to Siyang saying, "Please always look out for her Siyang. She's my precious baby-"
"Mom! I'm not a baby anymore!" Qi Lin interrupts her mother.
"Sure, but you're always my only daughter," her mom counters as she envelops her daughter in a hug.
Siyang just stared at the two when his eyes were drawn to the clock. He slightly coughs to get their attention. "Sorry to interrupt your mother-daughter time Coach but it's almost practice hours. We should get going and introduce you guys to the team."
"Of course, my bad Siyang. Let's go now." She said as she led the way to the outdoor courts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They were on the courts when the three spotted Huang Jing ordering around Xiuwen to get the ball from the speakers.
"Mom, that kid really spells trouble. Aren't you going to do anything about it?"
"Let's just see what I can do, later." She responded and called out, "Siyang, can I borrow your racket?"
Siyang unzips his racket bag and hands one to the coach.
"Qi Lin, would you like to do the honors?" she asks her daughter.
"I'll pass, Mom. Besides, I'm already pretty rusty not being able to use my dominant hand."
"Suit yourself," Coach Qi said then picked up a tennis ball that was just lying around and aimed it at the ball at the top of the speaker.
Coach Qi swung the racket, sending the ball toward the speaker. The ball struck the other ball, dislodging it.
Huang Jing flinched at this and looked back only for him to see the 'middle-aged woman' holding a racket.
Coach Qi smirked triumphantly as she returned Siyang's racket.
"Wow. you still got it, Mom." Qi Lin said proudly.
With a satisfied nod, she turned her attention back to the regulars practicing their swings.
"Everyone! Gather around." Siyang announces.
Jiale was the first one to notice the three and said, "Huh? Coach you're back!"
"Hey Qi Lin! You're here too," he adds.
Qi Lin just waves at him as the team gathers around them.
Siyang starts, "Let me introduce you to our Coach, Coach Qi. And her daughter, Qi Lin, who is going to be our manager. To prepare for the National Junior Tennis Selection Coach Qi has returned this semester to coach us, while Qi Lin will be helping out on the practice matches and data gathering within the team."
Coach Qi adds, "After being away for a year, I'm happy to see so many familiar faces in our club and we also have newcomers. Anyway, our goal never changes. We aim to win the national championship. For you, studying comes first. Only hardworking students can enter the qualifying matches. You have to be good at schoolwork and school tennis competitions. Then you may have the chance to compete for honors for our school."
She ends with her monologue asking the players, "Do you have the confidence to do just that?"
Everyone answers 'Yes' loudly.
Siyang then adds, "The qualifying match grouping details will be posted later. You can have a look then be prepared and keep practicing. Don't let your guard down!"
Everyone went back to practice, but Coach Qi specifically called out one person. "Huang Jing, come here."
Qi Lin smirked at this as she and Siyang went back to the office to fetch the groupings for the qualifying matches.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the two were at the office, Qi Lin went to her mom's desk to grab the papers while Siyang tried to find some tape.
Qi Lin took a look at the papers when she saw on the fourth page that Lu Xia was on it. Mom said before that the qualifying matches are only for grades 11 and 12. How come they considered Lu Xia?
"Found it already?" the voice from behind her made her slightly squeak and jump. Turning around she notices that Siyang already has the tape at hand and some scissors.
"Yeah. I did. I also noticed that Lu Xia is already part of the qualifying list. I thought that the qualifying matches were just for the seniors and juniors?" Qi Lin asked.
Siyang gestures for the papers before answering, "Well, typically freshmen aren't allowed in the qualifying matches since their skills have not been assessed yet."
Qi Lin hands him the papers as he continues, "However, Lu Xia has played a private match. Even if it was against the club's rules, I still had the time to assess his skill set."
This leaves Qi Lin to ponder how the captain knew about the match.
"Let's go"
She snaps out of her trance and follows the Captain out.

This is Er Tai.
Brother of Er Kang, best friend of Yong Qi. Voice of reason, whose internal monologue throughout season 1 entirely consists of “why am I friends with/related to crazy people with no sense of self-preservation?” Got himself put on a bus and peaced off to Tibet with his wife in season 2 because he can no longer deal with all this unnecessary drama. (His wife Saiya being a Tibetan princess being another reason why this drama would never fly in this day and age. I think even in the 2011 remake she was changed to be Mongolian?)
Saiya is Xiao Yan Zi 2.0. That’s it.
Saiya is not to be confused with Han Xiang, despite their practically identical fluffy headdress.
Han Xiang is the Uyghur princess who becomes the legendary Fragrant Concubine, and this drama had the audacity to run with the legend of her being a magical fairy who emits a natural flowery fragrant with absolutely zero logical or scientific explanation whatsoever attempted. Because why not.
Re Fan Bing Bing, I bet 95% of people reading this didn’t know that Huan Zhu Ge Ge was FBB’s first drama. And there’s quite a lot of tea around her role: apparently she was initially cast as Zi Wei but then Ruby Lin came along and Qiong Yao liked the look of Ruby better so FBB was demoted to a servant, a fact that if you believe cnet gossip, FBB is still salty about to this day.
Zhang Tie Lin also reprised the role of Emperor Qian Long in a thousand other dramas after this one and became the face of Qian Long so to speak. The rest of the cast and the public still call him Huang Ah Ma even IRL. (See also when Yong Qi, Xiao Yan Zi and Huang Ah Ma opened a restaurant in France.)
BTW, yes, Qian Long is this guy:
and also this guy:
Before Yanxi and Ruyi, Qian Long had such a good reputation, okay?
Anyway, HZGG season 1 also features Empress Ulanara as the main antagonist/villian.
Yes, this Empress Ulanara. I suggest don’t watch Ruyi after you watch HZGG.
In a pretzel of somehow cdrama-land being not that big, the actress who played the Empress in HZGG also went on to play her own mother 20 years later in Yanxi.
The Empress got a redemption arc at the end of season 1 which was promptly abandoned in season 2 simply because Zhen Huan the Empress Dowager came back to town. Not much to say about the Empress Dowager other than the fact that she’s a stuffy old lady who despite being called Lao Fo Ye (Old Buddha) is very quick to sentence people to death.
But she does bring along Qing Er, who is some vaguely-defined form of niece to Qian Long…or something, her father was a prince anyway, it’s not clear what kind. Qing Er is the Mary Sue (affectionate) of HZGG-verse. You’d think it’s Zi Wei, but it’s not. It’s Qing Er. Everybody loves Qing Er. Replaces Er Tai as the voice of reason and is even more chill than Er Tai when everyone around her is constantly courting death.
Qing Er eventually becomes the Juliet to Xiao Jian’s Romeo. Xiao Jian is (apparently? It’s not like there’s DNA tests back in the days) Xiao Yan Zi’s long lost brother. This is Xiao Jian in season 2.
This is Xiao Jian with a glow up and more depression in season 3. Yes, that’s Huang Xiao Ming.
Anyway, it turned out Xiao Jian (and Xiao Yan Zi’s) father was convicted of treason and sentenced to death, which means that Xiao Jian blames Qian Long for his father’s death. You can see how this may cause issues for Yong Qi and Xiao Yan Zi.
Which brings me to the only thing about season 3 other than Huang Xiao Ming that I will mention: Zhi Hua, who is HZGG’s entry into the land of harem drama. Summary: Yong Qi was forced to marry Zhi Hua, cue the Xiao Yan Zi/Yong Qi/Zhi Hua love triangle that was resolved in a way that I’m still salty about twenty years later. Let’s not get into it.
I also just want to mention Zhi Hua because she is played by Qin Lan, aka:
This is the reason Yanxi gave me an existential crisis. But not as badly as how much Ruyi trolled me.
By the way, in case you want to know how much HZGG x Ruyi x Yanxi overlap.
You can watch HZGG season 1 and season 2 with English sub here.
Huan Zhu Ge Ge (还珠格格), explained
Vox, don’t sue me for using this title.
Background: the other night, I suddenly had the OST stuck in my head. And I amaze my self by able to somehow sing the entire soundtrack?
Anyways, for those who either grew up in mainland China in the 90s or part the Chinese diaspora, Huan Zhu Ge Ge, princess returning pearl, was probably the OG idol historical. It’s adapted from a Qiong Yao novel. Huge hit across Asia. Influenced a whole generation.
Background plot — Xiao Yan Zi is a street orphan who met a girl named Zi Wei. Zi Wei turned out to be the daughter of Qian Long. Xiao Yan Zi accidentally gets mistaken as Zi Wei, takes on the title of princess, and hijinks ensues.
Tagging @huanzhuyulu for additions.
Anyways, this is Xiao Yan Zi
Perky, spunky, not super smart academically, and with a heart of gold. You know that female lead in idol cdramas these days? Xiao Yan Zi was the prototype. But also, she’s hilarious about Chinese proverbs.
This is Zi Wei
The prototype Ruby Lin character. I found Zi Wei rather corny when I was 7, TBH. Angsty back story involving being the unknown illegitimate daughter of the emperor, and then later getting whumped/tortured repeatedly by the empress.
This is the 5th Prince, Yong Qi
The emperor’s favorite son. The guy you thought would be the next emperor until you read anything about history. Smart and earnest. Xiao Yan Zi’s love interest.
(My first ever OTP!)
This is Fu Er Kang
Qian Long’s bodyguard. Zi Wei’s love interest. Done with Xiao Yan Zi and Yong Qi’s nonsense since episode 3 of season 1. He and Zi Wei had a lot of angsty moments that 7 years old me definitely was not into.
This is Jin Suo (on the right)
Zi Wei’s maid and BFF. Doubter of Xiao Yan Zi’s antics. Honestly not sure what personality she has other than “Fan Bing Bing is really pretty!”
This is Qian Long
Huang Ah Ma! The drama is Qian Long’s best publicist. Somehow manage to perv on women and threaten to off his kids, and is jovial enough that you spend your childhood going “what a loving father!”
This is Ling Fei
Yes, the same Ling Fei as Wei Yingluo from Yanxi. Super nice and motherly. The reason why my brain could not compute Ruyi for the longest time.
IN SUMMARY:
(Sorry, Er Tai — I don’t have enough GIF space to introduce you. Ditto, Qing Er. )
