For such a prominent series of figures in Japanese mythology, one would expect Kappas to appear more often in SMT. Of course, the series is predominantly Japanese, with a large amount of the demons belonging either to Japanese or Abrahamic mythologies, but many of the demons throughout the series are that Yokai are far more obscure or archaic. This, of course, can be observed in many demons based on Yokai that have barely crossed overseas, such as Amabie or Ippon-Datara, ironically leaving the yokai that typically see the light of day outside of the spotlight. However, there is one glorious exception to this rule- a specific kind of kappa that has appeared as a demon in the series, even if its overall species has not. That Kappa, of course, is today's Demon of the Day- Yamawaro.

Yamawaro are sometimes seen as a subspecies of Kappa, and while their relation is slightly disputed, they're still generally agreed upon to be connected to Kappa. What makes them different from Kappas is in the fact that they predominantly reside in mountain ranges, as their name literally translates to 'Mountain Child,' and this name can also be seen in some other denominations of Yamawaro, which each have similar but different meanings like 'Yaman ojiyan,' meaning 'Mountain Uncle.' (I can't read Japanese so, as always, take this with a mountain of salt- I'm going off of wikipedia sources for this.) My personal favorite alternate name of the Yamawaro is 'yamawarawa,' which is just fun to say, but that's beside the already off-track point.

So, what's the deal with the mountain child? The Yamawaro are similar in many ways to Kappa, as they seem to have a similarly childlike temperament. Another kappa-like attribute of these pranksters is in their appearance, being that of squat humanoid beings with superficial similarities to kappas, such as how the brown hair that covers their body crowns around the top of their head* for a similar effect to a kappa's dish.

*I can't really find much about this or where the original depiction of this comes from? A lot of old and traditional Yamawaro artwork depict the Yamawaro as just having an equally ugly bowl-cut. The earliest source I can find for this specific depiction is from the works of one Toriyama Sekien that seems to date back to the Edo period, but I can't find much about the work referenced and I'm unsure as to if it could be a forgery or not. You can never be too cautious in this space.

However, this is where these similarities end- they're similar to Kappa in terms of behavior, but they're far from actively malicious, just mischievous. Yamawaro have a major defining trait in that they have a single eye in the middle of their head, and are covered in greasy brown hair. Yet more Kappa-adjacent similarities come into view, though, with how they love sumo wrestling and absolutely despise horses. As they live up in the mountains of Japan, one may encounter a Yamawaro if they live up there alone, leading to you possibly even being able to recruit their help. If you offer them food in return for their services, they'll work to the best of the quality of the food, meaning that they're doing labor in return for the... quality of the reward. Marx would've loved these guys.

Still, if you offer them food upfront, they'll run away with it, so don't do that. Yamawaro will happily help out if you thank them for it, give them a reward equal to the value of their labor, and they may even return to help further, showing how actively helpful they can be, especially in comparison to the chakra-stealing anus-ripping kappas. As for their depiction in SMT, it's rock-solid given what I know about most of their contemporary depictions, albeit with the greasy brown hair being replaced with moss. Not much to comment on, outside of the fact that maybe they just put Yamawaros in SMT over Kappas because they had good work ethic.

Description: For some reason, you were always wearing a fox costume, while reading BSD. At least, BSD character were sure, that it's a costume.

Warning: OOC. Mentions of alcohol. I add eight links in the A/N, if you want to learn more about mentioned youkai or see, how BSD characters looked like in costumes. English is my second language.

You were having a time of your life. You had a plate of fried tofu, some good sake and new volume of BSD manga. You feet like a happy kitsune.

With your tails and ears visible, you were reading manga. Suddenly, you noticed, that your phone started to glow.

Two things happened.

First, a bunch of people appeared in your living room.

Second, you, for the first time in centuries, lost control and turned into a fox.

For one moment everything was fine. Then, you tried to set the intruders on fire. Perhaps, they were your fellow kitsunes, who decide to prank you.

Well, you didnt like it in one bit.

Time to teach them a lesson.

🐾 Okay, when they see you for the first time, they thought that you were wearing a costume. Like... You have fox ears and nine tails... You have to be wearing a costume.

🐾 But, when you transformed into a nine-tailed fox, because they startled you, when they appeared in your world, they realized, that you are, indeed, not a human. Especially, after you, an angry nine-tailed fox, tried to set them on fire.

🐾 After some explanations, fried tofu (thanks, Kyouka) and sake (thanks, Kaji) you calmed down and turned back into your half-fox half-human form.

🐾 And then, the time for an explanation from you arrived.

🐾 You told them, that your world has youkai, that were living near humans for thousands of years.

🐾 While youkai were hiding their existence from humans a secret, it doesn't mean, that youkais were hiding from humans.

🐾 With some cautious behaviour and with help from each other, youkais were secretly living among humans.

🐾 You quickly noticed, that BSD Cast looked guilty. They thought, that you will be uncomfortable with them knowing your secret. You assured them, that you are actually happy. You liked humans and were glad to have human friends who will accept you as a kitsune.

🐾 You bond with BSD Cast really quickly.

🐾 You, Dazai and Gogol formed a prankster group. You three became a worse nightmare for Kunikida, and, from time to time, for Dostoevsky.

🐾 You and Kyouka often eat tofu together.

Anything interesting in any of the volume extras (and in lotus eaters as well)? Kinda unfortunate they aren't appearing online as much since the ones for Forbidden Scrollery was nice. Also I remembering the yamawaro's first appearance actually being in a WaHH extra

Mm. Unfortunately all seven CDS books have nothing in the way of bonus comics and very few sketch etc. pages, with the Mizuchi reference sheet being the only thing really of note in that regard. Other than that, the books have small eyecatcher illustrations like the ones in this post at most. And the afterwords don't really say much.

Getting those extras that do exist and afterwords online is kind of just a forever project I fail to get around to because, while it shouldn't take that much time, none of them really spark that much immediate interest in me to spur me to work and are more just nice-to-haves. But I do still feel like it's something I "should" do, so I probably just have to make a day of it, as they say. For SCoOW series other than CDS too, but they rarely have much extra content either, which ironically makes it feel like a bigger rather than a smaller hassle.

The Lotus Eaters books I do not have. Shit costs money, and it ain't my circus.

Yet she languishes only one spot above Nemuno. -Kisune: My #1 vote every time. The hobo queen of Gensokyo who helpfully cleans up all the bones people throw down the well. She lives in a giant bucket, how can you not vote for her? -Eika: A little darling of a jellyfish girl and organizational expert, criminally overlooked by the fandom. She's one of my favorite 7th votes, personally, she's just adorable. Someday she will be an architect without peer ;_; -Takane: The other kappa airsoft yamawaro! The fulfillment of a promise made in WaHH, she is a natural foil to the ever popular Nitori, with all the implications you want from that. Her focus on war games makes her a natural for fun Wile E. Coyote type weapons silliness, tragically overlooked. She needs more love. -Sannyo: The subject of scandal last year, Sannyo was one of the least voted for, and some well-meaning but misguided soul tried to stuff the ballots for her. She deserves better, she deserves real votes. @sannyo-appreciation-posts would shank me if I didn't mention her here. There's an underappreciated character for everyone. Also let me know if I should scream about Jigoku Shoujo / Hell Girl main characters sometime because I have opinions. Yes, Wanyuudo is best boy; deal with it. Honeonna my beloved. Honneonna's two dozen onibi infesting her corpse my beloveds. Yamawaro is kinda meh and I feel his backstory ep didn't _quite_ justify his constant inclusion since je's otherwise a Kikuri interaction vehicle. Ichimokuren actually got character development over time which I was legir not expecting.

LET HONEONNA HAVE FRIENDS GODDAMMIT.

Kikuri is a necessary annoyance. Hellgirl herself is fascinating from a moral perspective and I really do want good things for her even if she's my most "meh" adjudication. Still think season 3 should have handled the posession better. And if one ever rewatches it, even if only a few eps chosen per season, it is indeed _very_ fun to see the progression in what the industry standard for animation was across the decades.

Btw shoutout to jinro soju peach. Absolutely delicious and smooth, yea dazzlingly smooth for a 13% alcohol punch.

Life updates!!! Odekake Kozame season 2 progressing smooooothly. Did y'all see the Aqualand tie-in?choukawaii! My pet leidyula floridiana slugs laid 18 eggys. I bought 2 zebra nerite snails in a 2-for-1 special a few days ago and they seem to be doing well, though one can hadly tell they're stripèd. They are refusing spirulina flakes tjough since our cashew tree keeps shedding cashew fruit into the pond, it's no wonder! Still doing overtime for the old job because it just feels nice to help. :) Discovered I can use excel to do dictionaries for conlangs: revolutionary. Thinking of wading into vowel harmony for my next project after I dominated consonant mutation with my last. And don't make fum of me!but! using minecraft plus a Buck list actually works well for implementing basic vocab, and even grammar when translating death messages/ subtitles. I'm on my fifth rewrite/redraw if the webcomic I want to start. AUGH it's frustrating because I want to lead into the story in the most succint and compelling way possible. Ah well, time and sleep mend all wounds. I just don't want to let down my friend, Metal.
