So I've finally come up with a name for the Japanese nation idea - I'm calling it "Yamatai" and the Yamatai AU.
Part 1
Part 2
This post will aim to cover some of Yamatai's history and culture.
First: history.
Solarians first arrived in the region some time before the Turbulent era - more specifically, they were actually an early Jie kingdom expedition that ended up wildly off-course and was eventually written off as lost.
The expedition eventually ended up on a distant island chain and spread from there.
Long story short, the region was not a nice place to live at the time, due to the presence of Yokai, mutated forms of local fauna that have abnormal abilities due to repeated and extended exposure to Fusang, and are generally considered a subspecies of their parent. This includes other Solarians if needed.
There was some suspicion and prejudice at first when Solarian Yokai began to appear, but they eventually put all that aside due to the fact that a lot of the local wildlife thought they looked like lunch.
Yamatai would spend the next several centuries isolated from the rest of Penglai, so when the other kingdoms made contact with them again, the cultures between the kingdoms and Yamatai had diverged so wildly that there was even a language barrier that hindered communication, although they eventually managed to solve that.
Jie eventually tried to declare Yamatai as their territory and tried to invade. Yamatai, having none of this, promptly told Jie to get bent and kicked them out. (A massive blow to the pride of Jie, it must be mentioned.)
The Fangshi guild would eventually offer to exchange information with Yamatai. This continued up until the disbanding of the Fangshi guild.
Second: Culture
Yamatai Solarians are fiercely independent; but at the same time are also concerned with honor and personal ability, one of the last remaining pieces they have of their Jie roots.
Their original religion was some basic Animism, the same as the Jie kingdom long before the Turbulent era. The long period of isolation from the other kingdoms led to this basic belief evolving into Shintoism, and when Lear started promoting Taoism, they would adopt some traits of it, but ultimately kept to their own thing.
When it comes to Yamatai Solarians, they generally fall into one of three categories - the standard Solarian, the Oni, and the Tengu. There are others, like the Obake, but usually it's one of these three. As a sidenote, most Yamatai would consider Ji an Obake.
The Solarian Oni is a Yokai subspecies of Solarian characterized by increased muscle density, a hardy constitution, and a large pair of horns on their heads. Your average Oni is highly opinionated and couldn't care less what anyone else thinks. They're friendly enough, but they can have a short fuse.
The Solarian Tengu is another Yokai subspecies, characterized by their wings and visible root-pattern markings on their face and body. This can be unsettling for other Solarians, especially those from outside Yamatai, so they tend to wear masks to hide them. All Tengu have a deep connection to the Fusang. Their noted similarity to the people of Yumin is a coincidence.
Once again, credit to @kai7kh for giving me the inspiration.

I actually forgot, but I'm finally posting more art from:
COLTOBER
When I read that the 11th was "poison" I couldn't resist and had to do the scene from chapter 3 of my Leshycat fanfic called: Pan's flute.
Uncensored image below:
Yamatai dug his own grave when he threatened Heket.
( I'm still learning perspective and anatomy, sorry if this looks weird)
I really wanted to draw this scene, in fact, I saw it during my work trip, during my lunch breaks :3 And I'm even proud of what I have done :D
Process below:
Yes, I had done it on the same day of day 10.

World Building continued: Backstory for the wars involving Flower Hill, Teikoku, and Usuhan Jiyeog, and subsequent occupations.
Apologies in advance for this being so long. I wanted to know how widespread Japanese weasels are in real life, and found something interesting I could use.
Japanese weasels originate from three areas of Japan, that being Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku.
Coincidentally, Japan famously has three Ceremonial Regalia in the form of a sword, magatama beads, and a mirror. These items are not seen by anyone other than the royal family and certain priests (images on the internet are recreations of what they could possibly look like, and those seen in public are symbolic stand-ins), but they symbolize the authority of the royal family.
Which allows me to make a backstory for my AU to help explain the wars and occupations, very loosely based off of events and locations in history, especially since animal biology limits certain events from happening.
In the past, there was an Emperor, who preferred for Teikoku to be in isolation. Under his rule, and of those before him, are smaller prefectures run by princes, lords, or other lessor royal families.
Contact with the United States Alliance and other nations led to a period of aggression and imperialism surrounding the empire of Teikoku, as they strove to fight against a stagnating economy that believed in its own superiority in the world, as well as a strict caste system preventing innovation.
Eventually, after some time, three princes are sent out to conquer the final few neighboring islands, so that may join the empire, and provide a larger force for when they make a move for the peninsula and the mainland.
The three princes are named after their prefectures, and the Emperor has given them each one of the Imperial Regalia as proof of their superiority.
The Sword
Honshu is the main island of Japan, and is also known as the dragonfly island. Teikoku will call it Tonbo, which refers to dragonflies, which are fierce and deadly creatures. As such, their Imperial Regalia is the sword, Yūki no ken (the sword of valor), and is based off of Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi (Grass-Cutter). Tonbo is the main physical fighting force of Teikoku.
The Magatama Jewels
Kyushu is smaller than Honshu, but it had a lot of trade circuits around the ocean and the mountains. So I will make a prefecture named Kairo (Circuit), and have the area be responsible for trade and roads around the empire, as well as in the fighting forces. I would use the famous Magatama jewels (Benevolence) to symbolize their rule.
The Mirror
Shikoku means four provinces, and is the least populated area of the three areas. Shikoku also has a lot of temples (perhaps run by green pheasants, the national symbol of Japan), which draws in a lot of pilgrims. But they also maintain a lot of gateways to other prefectures. So maybe Genkan for entryway. They are responsible for planning and strategizing for the other two. They can have the Michi no kagami, mirror of the path to represent wisdom/truth, based on the Yata no Kagami.
VERY loosely taking inspiration from The Tale of the Heike, a collection of Japanese epic poetry with many translations and retelling (actually written down 200 years after said events supposedly happened), which says that the royal families that held these Regalia were defeated in a naval battle, and threw themselves and the treasures into the sea. Subsequent legends suggest that many search and diving parties have been led to recover the Regalia.
In my AU, I hold that the items were thrown into the sea, with the princes believing that they could return for them later even if they were captured, although they managed to escape. It was a complete disgrace for the Emperor, as without the Ceremonial Regalia, the legitimacy of the entire palace was thrown into question.
And then the box holding the Magatama washed up on the shores of the peninsula.
It is returned as a gesture of good will, but as no good deed goes unpunished, Teikoku believes that they must have taken the other Imperial Regalia for themselves, starting a land invasion. The small army is annihilated by farmers, fresh out of overthrowing their own monarchy, wielding guns, which Teikoku has never seen before.
Which results in a larger army being sent, which is also defeated and the princes captured and possibly executed by the hedgehog army in the north of the country. At this point, without the authority of the Ceremonial Regalia, and increasing economical desperation, the country is forced to undergo a reformation. While there is still an Emperor, he does not hold as much political power as he once did.
Teikoku left behind settlements of soldiers and colonists controlling the southern portion of the peninsula, which they name Usuhan Jiyeog, who take up ruler-ship and fish farming.
The hedgehogs use the proof of their power in defending their areas to take control of what they would name Flower Hill.
It is a strongly held belief that before they backed away from Usuhan Jiyeog, the Emperor promised that anyone who managed to retrieve the Ceremonial Regalia from Flower Hill would be reinstated as the next emperor, and be rewarded with power beyond their wildest dreams.
Did the other two, heavier, items, even wash up on the shores of the peninsula like the jewels, locked in an airtight box? Or did they sink to the bottom, as they were heavier? Who is to say...
But alongside the greed, desperation for power, and food production issues, the temptation of finding the supposedly stolen Imperial Regalia locked away in some distant stronghold is a good enough reason as any to attempt to occupy Flower Hill.
Now, I'm not about to retcon what I have already written and say that Commander Jogjebi wanted the sword and mirror, and Huinjogjebi is a weasel of science who would likely not be interested anyway. But claiming that Flower Hill stole precious items and symbols of their country in the past, and them not being able to disprove it, is enough of an excuse to make quite a few countries in the international courts turn a blind eye to the happenings surrounding Flower Hill.
Oil Production
I did figure out the oil and gas situation. I did go ahead and give the Jindo Empire a large amount of oil. The Venezuela country below the United States Alliance is now the República de Cultivos Oleaginosos, and is trying to prevent the wolves' country from occupying their regions.
Meanwhile, the vast majority of the world's oil in my AU is being produced in this country.
While it used to be many different nations in the past, the leaders understood that their vast oil and gas reserves would result in large scale invasions, and agreed to band together into the Equatorial Allegiance.
#no one in my AU is ending up as the new ruler of Teikoku#Mulmangcho might be a prince in Lily Bell but he is a home grown prince#I'll say that now#this is just supposed to be a footnote in the backstory of the AU#why does it have to be so detailed and complicated me?#I knew some of the legends of grass-cutter from overly sarcastic productions#but I learned about grass-cutter falling into the sea and possibly washing up from usagi yojimbo#sah#SaH#squirrel and hedgehog#lily bell in the thorn thicket#the rod that blocks the lightning#it would be like a normal (not Arthur) person showing up at the PM office with Excalibur or the bone of scone#and claiming to be the new king#I hope mixing and matching legends and such from different countries and time periods is an ok thing to do#I mean no one stopped me from writing 145K words on Korean farming so#There’s a few stories about Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi and Yata no Kagami#Items like them show up in anime a lot but I wasn’t even thinking of it when I wrote this#kind of wanted a whole Yamatai and the sun queen descendants plot line for the giggles#but Yamatai might just be Kyushu

Lesbian Rand AU?
[Send me a potential AU and I'll answer with five things from that story!]
Oh boy, here we go-
A lot depends on the setup. A big part of Rand's character is reckoning with the failures of his past life and the foundation of a lot the interesting ways Jordan interrogates the gender binary is built on the idea that those mistakes are a remix of Paradise Lost/The Fall. LTT is at both at once Eve and Lucifer. Eve in that he acts without the consent or permission of his other half (Latra Posae Decume- the Adam of this version) and runs of on his own in defiance of her will. Lucifier in that in his pride, he believes he can match or surpass the Creator, by attempting to Seal the Bore with only saidin. As a result, paradise is lost- the AoL is destroyed in the breaking by LTT's sin, an entire Age results where all men take the blame to a greater or lesser extent, for the original sin of one man. Of course, Jordan isn't just running with this premise as simple fact- he's interrogating the idea of original sin, salvation, and redemption and raising inherent and complicating questions. Does it make a difference that LTT's intentions where pure and genuine? That he didn't know and couldn't have predicted the consequences of his actions? How does Rand suffering for LTT's do any justice to those who suffered and died in the Breaking? Is chasing the splendor of an Age that could shatter so easily even a worthwhile endeavor, or should the focus be on letting go of the past and building something new? Does that mean forgetting and forgiving and is that fair?
All this to say is that, I think for a Lesbian Rand AU to work the story would probably need a reversed gender dynamic to the one that is present in the books- which I don't know that I could ever write both because it would veer very uncomfortably close to the most misogynistic elements of our own historical societies, and probably have to exceed them in brutality to work (something I'm not very good at, since a lot of my world building energy is usually directed at reshaping and re interpenetrating those historical societies through more queer and equitable lenses), and because a lot of what I connect to in Rand's story has a lot to do with the specifically queer male reading of it. That said if I could or would do that, I think it could also work very effectively as a queer female reading in the same thematic ways.
Rand and male channelers in general in the WoT verse already fulfill a lot of the tropes commonly associated with medieval witches- individuals tainted by an otherworldly power that is poorly understood and inherently transgressive to the gender roles of their society, as well as threat to the established social order (to put it mildly). It's not hard to translate that to a theoretically tainted saidar and the feelings of a resulting broken world onto a theoretical female Dragon. Rand in this context fulfills a pretty familiar role- Joan of Arc, Himiko of Yamatai, Elizabeth Woodvile, etc- savior and hero to some, witch and monster to others.
My brain of course goes to female Mat to be Rand's love interest in this AU- trickster and guile heroine. Mat's specific brand is easy to imagine transcending into a female character in a strict patriarchy, both because Mat's role in the series is already pretty gender transgressive (as befits a trickster shapeshifting archetype), and because it's easy to imagine again that simmering homoerotic temptation Mat and Rand's relationship inherently invokes, but gender flipped: Mat representing a liberation a refusal of the traditional gender roles that Rand can't quite decide if she truly wants or only wants because she was raised to want them. Rand specifically being homosexual rather then my bisexual head canon means that, I would probably air on the side of it being compulsory heterosexuality/heteronormativity- and genuinely wanting the life of adventure and liberty offered by Mat's promises of running away together.
I could also see Min (again as her Gender Weird makes her surprisingly easy to translate into a traditional patriarchy without loosing core elements of her character) as Rand's love interest- again in largely the same role as the series. Someone who Rand could just be....herself around, who couldn't overawed or terrified or brow beaten into seeing a monster, but rather just a person- a woman sacred and overwhelmed and being crushed by the expectations of a savior, and all the fears of being a monster. Conversely I don't know that either Avihenda or Elayne's relationships would still function the same- not without flipping their genders as well which defeats the idea of the premise. A few extra thoughts (since 1 and 2 are basically just big disclaimers)-
While I find the idea of Lesbian Rand having to learn from Short Gay Ball of Anger Uncle Moiraine very funny conceptually (Moiraine is already a pretty strong riff of mentor characters like Obi Wan and Gandfalf, but genderflipped, and I find the idea flipping that back but keeping the more unique aspects of Moiraine's character to be interesting), I also can't help but find the idea of Moiraine as an older, slightly rattled/mad, female wilder Moiraine with the same motivation as in the series just as intriguing as a mentor figure to Lesbian Rand. It would give the entire series a very different vibe, but that's just a natural outcome of the premise as well. I once said Moiraine is a woman who, if she had be born into a patriarchy would have easily been burned as a witch- but the truth is, the idea of Moiraine as a witch to clever to burn, a witch who is surviving the curse of her power, and struggling to see the savior who may yet be able to reverse that curse and save their world...their is an Appeal There.
It's scary conversely, how easy it is to fit the Aes Sedai in general into a gender flipped Randland, and I think speaks to how effectively Jordan wrote them and their institutional flaws. Mired in traditions, secure in their power, comfortable in ordering the world to their will- a mix between the Catholic Church and an order of magi, angry and resistant to reform and change that alters the base of their power, presided over by ancient and yet ageless cabals of entrenched elders. The scene, easily one of my favorites, in the series, in Fal Dara, is almost sickeningly easy to imagine with the genders flipped- a young woman still bright eyed and scarred of what she is and what she is capable of, with three thousand years of tales of women going mad from power, declaring themselves the Dragon falsely in greed and lust for power and leaving the world to suffer for it, walking into a a room with three ancient wizards who tell her that this is her fate, to be this messiah and destroyer both, it hits sharply and exactly the right way.
Again, I don't know that I would do it, and I find what Jordan is doing with gender and sexuality already in the Wot Books inherently more interesting and....less....I don't know sticky? But it's a fun thought exercise.
#WoT#Wheel of time#WoT fanfic#AU Ask Game#WoT Book Spoilers#AMOL Spoilers#Rand al'thor#min farshaw#mat cauthon#cauthor#randmin#moiraine damodred#cw: sexism#cw: misogyny#discussed anyways#I'm a littttttle hesitant to post this one#As I am very much Not A Woman so it's hard for me to speak to this idea/experience#But it was a exercise that got me thinking pretty heavily and helped me articulate some of my complex thoughts#about the way Jordan writes gender#again I don't know that I could ever write as violently a patriarchal world as this au would necessitate#I struggle just to write in the HoTD world sometimes#but again I think it shows the strength of the world Jordan created that a lot of the core store would survive if you flipped the genders#and in some ways it would be...a lot more familiar to us and our sensibilities#which of course is why is why I think it shines the way it's written#anyways enough rambling

Readers And Writers Alike, BEWARE
I’m not a writer, but I have concepts and ideas! And also NOT proofread
Werewolf au where yamatai happened but instead of Himiko just possessing Sam, she gives sam a werewolf form where Himiko comes out and uses every full moon, and each full moon Lara is forced to tie up Sam and watch her turn into a vengeful rabid beast out to kill her.
Sam and himiko are separate entities in this au, so when Himiko turns, which is spontaneous, Sam is knocked out inside of the werewolf form, but Lara doesn’t know this, and neither does sam bc Lara always walk out on her, leaving Himiko tied up in a room nearby until morning.
Thinking she also killed Sam, Lara huddles over to Sam(Himiko) calls and waits for Jonah as she sobs into the beasts furs, but before Jonah could arrive, Himikos form turns to dust, leaving behind a curled up, asleep and unharmed Sam. At the surprise, she cries even harder and pulls Sam into a hug, which wakes her up. Sam soon realized Lara was covered in gashes, wounds and blood.
Sam, not waiting for Jonah, drives Lara to a hospital, which both were forced to make an elaborate lie on Lara being attacked by a bear. Almost half a month later, Lara was released from the hospital, finally being able to celebrate Himikos death, which consisted of Sam and Jonah drinking with Sam also looking out for Lara as she slept to her hearts content.

Hi. I’m back into Tomb Raider after 4+ months away. And do I have yet another WIP Fanfic in the works:
As you know, I love to kidnap my video game women. Including one certain Lara Croft. 2013 gets too much hate for it (even if they sorta went overboard first 20 mins with Torture Lara Croft Simulator 2013), but Lara eventually toughens up enough to save her friends and destroy the curse that is Yamatai and it’s Sun Queen.
When I finally played 2013 last year, some bad plot and aged/broken at times gameplay aside…it’s a brilliant and unique game that begins the road to this new Lara Croft being A SURVIVOR who still wants to honor her father, but in the right way.
In particular did I really love her surrogate father-daughter relationship with Conrad Roth, a English Royal Marine turned sailor and freelance treasure hunter. Roth was her dad’s best friend and bodyguard, promising to look after Lara upon Richard’s death. He’s watched Lara grow up into a young woman who’s too set for adventure. But his Endurance Expedition and it’s unfortunate marooning will not only test their relationship, but their bonds with the rest of the crew as well.
In essence, Conrad Roth is Lara Croft’s counter to Victor “Goddamn” Sullivan and his relationship with Nathan Drake.
With all of that said, let’s get to the fic setup: this is a planned Tomb Raider 2013 Fix It/AU. As usual with most of my fics, expect “Damsel Whump” a tad more often or two than even 2013 showed. Aka more Lara Croft and you guessed it: She WILL be properly BOUND AND GAGGED (likely too alongside her best friend Samantha Nishimura in THAT SCENE included).
But it’s not just damsel whump I want to feature: I want to do what 2013 unfortunately failed to do beyond certain dialogue and a very few select moments (unfortunates over half of Lara’s development in the Survivor Trilogy is via her Survivor comics set before and in-between 2013/Rise+Rise/Shadow) and that is CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. I want to tell more about Lara and Roth’s bond as well as the rest of the gang, including Lara’s best friendship Sam and how she is always doing her best even in the face of danger to boost Lara’s fragile confidence up.
Btw I will go ahead and spoil one plot point in which I want to do: I want Roth to LIVE PAST 2013 and INTO RISE. Granted, thanks to the events of my current WIP (crossover with Uncharted post-Lost Legacy featuring Sam Drake and Chloe Frazer), Roth will still perish. But I feel like he deserves more time to shine before his eventual demise in Lara’s arms.
And I will give one more major plot point I want to develop: Lara’s other mentor in 2013 is Dr. James Whitman, an American archeologist who to not say too much…doesn’t have the most outgoing or caring personality. How does he get to this point and will his and Lara’s bond ever be repaired? Find out already in this opening chapter!
With all that said and done, here’s Chapter 1 of Tied Up Tomb Raider 2013: Bondage of the Sun Queen! Chapter 1 alone contains creepy behavior including non consensual touching and oogling, kidnapping, non consensual bondage, and implied rape. But expect in future chapters the strong language, violence with blood, gore, and featuring of major character deaths through the fic to come along with of course more non con (won’t do explicit rape compared to many of my darkest stuff here, but for those fans of my darkest stuff: I’ll likely do some oneshot stuff or even short chapter AUs of Lara, Sam, and maybe even Joslin Reyes having their way with 😈)!
Oh and PS, hope you enjoy the manips down below too in addition to our opening chapter. PPS, now I’m wanting to write a weird out of left field crossover between Tomb Raider 2013 and Grand Theft Auto down the line. Read the captions and you’ll tell the potential plot bunny. 😏
#tomb raider#tomb raider 2013#lara croft#conrad roth#samantha nishimura#james whitman#damsel#bound and gagged damsel#kidnap whump#damsel in distress#fix it fic#manipulation#grand theft auto#crossover plot bunny

Because the idea won't leave my brain, I made some more drawings and ideas.
First off - The Seiman/Pentagram features HEAVILY in the nation's technology, most significantly in the Seiman unit - a sort of combination reactor/CPU. Full-scale ones are complex, generally used for large-scale operations like ships. (As a side effect, engineers from this nation generally expect power systems and core computer systems to be in the same room.) Smaller ones are used for things like vehicles or even personal items.
Combat talismans generally feature a Pentagram in the center, with a character in the middle of that determining what element a particular technique will be. The ones you saw on the previous post would be "utility" talismans.
The Kujiin limiter system is specifically for those who utilize their equivalent of the Jade system - specifically, it caps the amount of Ki a user can draw upon to prevent themselves from being exhausted due to expenditure - or worse. Disabling it is an intensive process to prevent arbitrary usage. (And even then, the passphrase and gestures to even turn it off are usually kept secret to make sure some idiot doesn't accidentally kill themselves trying to show off.) Before you ask, yes, it's the whole Rin-Pyo-To-Sha-etc... thing.
(Once again, credit to @kai7kh for putting the idea in my head to begin with)

Tried to go to bed last night and realized that I need more propaganda reasons for the weasel kingdoms to hate Flower Hill and want to take it over.
Then a few real life historical reasons hit me. But the real life events happen in different times in history, so I now have to do a massive amount of research and comparison since there are multiple different accounts of what happened and who was involved. It IS an AU, though, so maybe it doesn’t have to be completely accurate…
Which will require me to rework some things again.
#Might have to reintroduce Jollin and have that scene from HIS perspective to make this work#Kind of wanted a Lara Croft type OC who visits Yamatai for another AU#but this new AU backstory idea would have me remove that character and idea#the rod that blocks the lightning

To hell and back
Lara Croft/Kassandra (eagleraider)
—
She wouldn’t call these kinds of jobs her usual jobs.
No, her usual jobs were doing the dirty work of other people. She was a fixer, she fixed other people's problems, and in return, they paid for her extensive and skilful services.
-
Kassandra Agiadis is a mercenary hired by Conrad Roth to aid the search for Yamatai. A simple job in theory but things rarely go as planned.
(eagleraider AU where Kassandra joins the Endurance crew and meets the young Lara Croft on her first adventure.)
