Nonou is everything that Orochimaru is not.

She is warm and caring. She is ‘mother’ to countless children, selfless and nurturing. Yakushi Nonou sees a child on the streets and sees a soul in need; she sees someone who wants to be wanted and wants them in-return without any strings attached.

Nonou gives without expecting anything in-return, and that’s what makes her a better person than Orochimaru.

But she’s everything that he doesn’t want to be. People like Nonou have a life-span, and no matter how many children grow in the light of her motherly love, she will ,in time, pass-on and be forgotten.

Orochimaru is charming and magnetic, but it’s all a ruse, a tool to draw people in. He takes the concept of family and weaponizes it for his own benefit.

He sees a child on the streets and sees a pliable soul who can be worked between his fingers as easily as clay. He sees someone who wants to be wanted and wants them for everything they have to offer him.

He sows only for the promise of reaping, and that’s why he’ll last for all time.

Kabuto is the youngest crown prince of the elves, the kingdom of Seleem; the son of an elf and a dragon. He became king after the death of his own mother, Nonou Yakushi, who was killed by the resistance "Root". His first decree was the hanging of all those involved in the square. His older sister, Katsu Rinha, was promised to the king of the snake people (kingdom of Hebinoku), Orochimaru, as a bride and future queen, but she did not want either an engagement or a wedding. Orochimaru himself, at the first meeting, became very interested in the prince, courted him. But Kabuto gave a turnaround, because he obeyed his mother in everything. However, later he fell in love and allowed courtship (Katsu also did not mind). But since the death of his mother, he fulfilled her last will and closed himself in after he very rudely rejected Orochimaru, and literally ordered Katsu to get married.

One of the features of the elves and the royal family in particular is that they can sing to give nature strength and life, so they are good healers (they themselves came from nature and the common god of all peoples — the Mother of All).

Since Kabuto also came from dragons, he can create fire.

the mednin were excluded bc we wanted to see which women made it to official jounin rank without falling into the women-as-healers trope, so adding them would be somewhat counterproductive. (iirc this whole thing started bc of kurenai, which is why she's at the top of the list. the qualifications - must appear in naruto manga, must be confirmed jounin at some point in the generally understood naruto timeline, must not be a medical ninja, etc - were based on her, so women who otherwise might have been counted may have gotten disqualified from this specific list)

that said, in order to get to this point, we did round up as many naruto manga canon women as we could find, so here are the ones that didn't make the cut ("confirmed" is short for "last known confirmed rank"):

TW: Grooming mention, profanity from me

I can't believe people ship Kabuto with Orochimaru.

Like, ignoring the 31-year age gap, how Orochimaru scouted Kabuto out as a child, and how Kabuto started working for Orochimaru when he was 14, Orochimaru worked with Danzo and was just as responsible for getting Kabuto to kill Nono.

Orochimaru is responsible for ruining Kabuto's life and not only starting/worsening his identity crisis, but prolonging it as well.

What makes my blood boil is that, if Kabuto was female, then more people would reject any sort of romantic/sexual relationship between the two.

What am I supposed to gather from that? That you, the OroKabu shippers, are fine with an unequal relationship between a boss and subordinate that's absolutely FULL of grooming implications, as long as the one being groomed is a male?? What kind of horrific double-standard is that?!

And you can't go and say you have a different interpretation when you ship them because Orochimaru leading Kabuto to killing Nono isn't up to interpretation. Orochimaru sees Kabuto's skill as a medic and is there when Danzo threatens the Orphanage and is there again to take Kabuto in at his most vulnerable after they put him in that situation. If you take that out, then that character is no longer Kabuto.

Y'know what? Fuck ignoring the other things.

Orochimaru was 37-40 when first meeting Kabuto, who was around 6-9 (I don't have approximate ages because it isn't stated how long he'd been at the Orphanage by that time, but we know he was 6 when he was found and 9 when he left).

A person in their late 30s took special interest in a literal goddamn child and orchestrated his separation from any sort of protective parental figures. Then, years later when they are 45 and the child is 14, they put him in a situation where he kills his mother and shatters his sense of self, so that they can swoop in and exploit his extremely traumatized and vulnerable state and make him dependent on them. All because that child was skilled in something his mother taught him, and they wanted that skill for themselves.

How am I supposed to find that romantic or sexual in any fucking way? Why do you?

One of these days when I can freely write again, I want to explore the days when Orochimaru and Nonou were in ROOT and dissect any potential of a relationship there. Let’s say that he led her squad, and she felt obligated to respect him as a Sannin, but I doubt she thought very highly of him. She saw way too much on whatever battlefield they shared.
