Eerie Tales from the School of Screams by Graham Annable. First Second, 2023. 9781250195036. 364pp. http://www.powells.com/book/-9781250195036?partnerid=34778&p_bt
A teacher writes the word "eerie" on the chalkboard in front of her class and then asks the young students to tell the class the eeriest story they have. Their stories are strange. Alvin tells the first, "The Village That Vanished…", about two men who follow a map to a field filled with sheep where they meet a strange dude who tells them what happened to the town of Wattersbug. It's not horribly graphic, but it's also not a story I'd expect a kid to tell, though his teacher seems excited. Alice's story, "The Face In The Forest…" features a girl named Luanne who's expected to do everything for her aunt and uncle, though they don't seem happy that she's so helpful. When she goes into the forest in search of wood she meets a sympathetic head. Will it help her, or does it mean her no good? It's hard to say at first though the head seems very friendly, and it says it wants her help.
More stories follow. They involve drones, ghosts, spaceships, aliens, grandparents, and demons. When you're reading the book, don't jump ahead -- it has a fun ending, but you have to read every page to really enjoy it.
This is my favorite spooky kids' graphic novel in a while. I know a few kids who would have enjoyed it in grade school, but it's probably got more appeal for older students and adults, it would make a great read-aloud.

“Sometimes writing is running downhill, your fingers jerking behind you on the keyboard the way your legs do when they can’t quite keep up with gravity.” —Rainbow Rowell, Fangirl •——————————————————————————————• Writing feels like my life right now with project proposals, final papers, and scholarship essays ugh! I feel like I’m out of words, drained dry. I need to channel my inner Cath where the words can just spill out! My heart goes out to fellow grad students and undergrads working on final papers these next few weeks! We can do it y’all! •——————————————————————————————• #fangirl #rainbowrowell #yalit #yabooks #yagraphicnovel #graphicnovel #youngadultbooks #youngadultfiction #reader #readersofinstagram #readerlife #bibliophile #bibliophilelife #bookish #bookishlove #bookcommunity #graphicnovelart #beautifulbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl9XIfCPyCP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Well, would you? The two questions I get the most are, “where is the BEST place to buy your book?” and “how can I get a signed copy?” There are many wonderful places to buy my book but @bookpeople is the BEST bookstore in Austin and they are THE place to get SIGNED and PERSONALIZED copies of Passport. Click the link in bio for more details! And a HUGE thank you to all who have already pre-ordered Passport. Hello everyone!
I hope you are having a wonderful fall and getting ready for the turkey day. I have many exciting events coming up in November and early December that I would like to share with you guys.
DC BRAU HOLIDAY MARKET
3178 Bladensburg Rd NE
Washington DC 20018
November 30th Saturday, 1-5 PM I will be part of DC Small Business Saturday as a vendor at DC Brau's Holiday market. If you are in DMV area for thanksgiving, please visit the market and support small local businesses and also enjoy DC Brau beer! This is a free event for all ages. Here's the detail of the event:
http://dcbrau.com/holidaymarket19/
I have been honored to be part of the National Museum of Women in the Arts's 'DMV COLOR Book Art by Women of Color' exhibition. The District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia—known locally as the DMV—is a fertile center of art-making for women of color of diverse heritages. Washington, D.C. and its surroundings have long been home to a rich community of artists of color, ranging from those born and raised here to others who built connections to the region as short-term residents. The exhibition DMV Color features an eclectic assortment of contemporary works by women of African American, Asian American, and Latina heritage. The artists’ books, graphic novels, photobooks, and zines depict intimacies of family life, legacies of enslavement, effects of rampant development, dislocation and newfound freedoms tied to immigration, and other topics.
This exhibition is up now till March 4th 2020. You will find my work along with works of 18 other female artists based in DMV area. Please visit this awesome museum!

November 4, 2019–March 4, 2020
Betty Boyd Dettre Library and Research Center National Museum of Women in the Arts
Monday-Friday: 10:00am-12:00pm & 1:00-5:00pm
Closed on Weekends
Last month, I had an amazing opportunity to paint a mirror for the LINE HOTEL's restaurant, A Rake's Progress in Adam's morgan, DC. If you haven't been to this hotel, I highly recommend checking it out for their excellent decor and fine dining experience. This painting will be up until the end of this month, then it'll be erased for me to paint a new winter-themed painting on December 2nd, which will be up till the end of this year. If you are in the DMV area, you are welcome to come by and see me in action!
THE LINE HOTEL
1770 EUCLID STREET NW WASHINGTON, D.C. 20009
TEL: 202 588 0525
As some of you may know already, I have been part of DC women entrepreneur collective,
Femme Fatale DC
for two years now. I am so happy to announce that they have just opened a new winter pop up in Chinatown!
Location:
401 Massachusetts Avenue Northwest
Washington, DC 20001 This pop up will be up until the end of March 2020. Not only this will be the home for many DMV female entrepreneur's products, but we'll also be hosting lots of events and workshops to empower creative women in all walks of our lives. At this store, you'll find all of my prints and signed copies of Cook Korean!, along with eclectic works made by several dozen female DMV artists, including jewelry, stained glass, self-care products, apparel, fine art, and other gift items. Please join us for our opening party on December 5th 2019 to check out the new store and meet the makers! For more info: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/femme-fatale-dc-launch-party-a-cosmic-gathering-tickets-80372744041 Early-bird sale for the opening party ends on November 29th. Here's the flyer for the opening party that I designed. Feel free to spread the word about this event and Femme Fatale DC! You can also follow their Instagram to get informed on all of their upcoming events.
I am thrilled to have some of the best gift shops in DMV area to carry my work. These stores feature mostly local artists' work and would be great places to shop for your holiday needs. Now you can find my prints at SHOP MADE IN DC at their brand new location in Dupont, GIFT AND GATHER in Occoquan, VA, and STEADFAST SUPPLY STORE at both Ballston Quarter and Navy yard locations. If you are in DMV area, I highly recommend checking out these stores. You'd be amazed at their selections of beautiful and unique products.
Some of you may be aware that I have been working on a memoir graphic novel about immigrating from Korea to America for a while now. The book is called 'Almost American Girl' and it's coming out in just two months, on January 28th, 2020! You can pre-order the book here. It's been getting some starred reviews that I'd like to share it with you guys. https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/robin-ha/almost-american-girl/ https://www.publishersweekly.com/978-0-06-268509-4 I am both very excited and nervous about my book coming out. I will be posting more news on this book as well as info on my upcoming book signing events and artist's talk soon so stay tuned! Thanks for reading and I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! All the best, Robin Ha

How It All Ends by Emma Hunsinger. Greenwillow Books, 2024. 9780063158146. 298pp. plus the best "Thank You" page ever at the end of the book.
Tara is thirteen, and she's about to start high school with her older sister (Isla) because she skipped the eighth grade. To say Tara is nervous would be an understatement. (She has an active imagination we get to see on the page -- the color of what goes on in her head is red, as opposed to the way the rest of the book is colored.)
High school feels like complete chaos. One of the two other kids who skipped a grade with her, Jessup, already has a beard, so he kind of fits in. Tara does not and is freaked out. Then she goes into Mr. Tims's class for the first time and witnesses his "white-hot love of literature." He's amazing (to me at least), most of his students are dreadful, and his announcement of a group project brings forth apocalyptic imagery in Tara's mind…but it does lead to her making a friend, and one of the funniest presentations ever. That's about half the book -- the rest is great, too, but no spoilers.
This is one of my favorite depictions of family and sisterhood -- Isla and Tara are best friends in addition to being sisters -- plus figuring out what's going on in your own head and heart and then dealing with it. The depictions of high school misbehavior are hilarious and felt super real. Plus the art and especially the coloring is so good I had to stop several times to admire it. Great book.

“I’m tired of people thinking they have a right to my body.” Big thanks to @DCComics (#DCPartner) for sending an e-copy of this queer graphic novel Poison Ivy: Thorns by @kodykeplinger, illustrated by Sara Kirin! I read this origin story in one sitting! ——— review ——— Let me just start off by saying that I love how the DC Universe is really embracing queer characters as the norm like it should be. It’s so nice to see representation and to give teens people they can relate to! This book does contain the orphan trope and content for more mature teens (i.e. sexual harassment, parental abuse). This book is available now! I absolutely loved Poison Ivy: Thorns. The illustrations were simplistic, as well as the muted shades of color they used... it made the entire graphic novel have this creepy, gothic horror type vibe. This is a story about how someone sweet, kind hearted, and caring can be turned into a monster. We find Pamala, our *hero or future villain??* in an impossible situation. She’s a girl who loves plants like her mother and is determined to be reunited with her against all odds. Her relationship with her father is very strained, there are rumors about a boy at school, and through the mess she finds comfort in Alice, a student who had to evaluate due to a contagion being released at the park near her house. 👀 The ending left me wanting more; I can’t wait for the next installment! ——— tags ——— #Bookstagram #Bookstagrammer #BookNerd #BookReview #BookRecommendation #GraphicNovel #DCComics #BookLover #ReadersOfInstagram #BooksOfInstagram #BooksOfIG #Reading #Books #PTMBooks #YAGraphicNovel #BookNerd #BookLover #BookSeries #PoisonIvy #PoisonIvyThorns #BookReview (at Saint Joseph, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSE7dworENU/?utm_medium=tumblr

🌺Comics🌺 QOTD: Have you read any graphic novels (like mangas, comics, webtoons)? AOTD: I read more webtoons than mangas, but I have read a manga and I really want to read this! Side question, have you guys watched Bones? Honestly, as much love as I have for the show, by Season 9 I tend to get bored of it. I just feel like they keep going and going and going and going. I'm slowly powering through Season 9 though, so yay! 🌺 |Tags| #graphicnovel #yagraphicnovel #webtoons #paperroses #WiresandNerve #MarissaMeyer #bookishlove #alwaysreading #booklove #bookdragon #booksbooksbooks #allthebooks #bookishcommunity #booksofinstagram #unitedbookstagram #bookpics #bookishlife #readingforpleasure #readersgonnaread #bookshelves https://www.instagram.com/p/CEro5STAb25/?igshid=972zq53m4hpv

Yalll I’m back!!!!! My semester is over! 🥳 I’ve been so stressed my book buying may have gone a ~little~ overboard lately. Here are some new graphic novels I picked up! Do you stress-buy? It’s a bad habit of mine but I’ve actually gotten better even with all the new books I recently purchased. Progress! . #QOTD: What are you reading? I love YA but I’ve been reading only YA since January for school so I’m planning on reading some adult and middle grade books this week. I started The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren yesterday and I love it so far! . . . #newbooks #graphicnovels #currentlyreading #bookstagram #bookworm #yabooks #yagraphicnovels #bookhaul #booknerd #booksbooksbooks #librariansofinstagram #diversebooks #weneeddiversebooks #ownvoices #dunegraphicnovel #almostamericangirl #themagicfish #bookish #bookcommunity #beautybookcorner https://www.instagram.com/p/CPBpomhriE3/?utm_medium=tumblr

💬 If you were a superhero, what would your super power be? . Thank you to @dccomics #DCPartner for gifting me this copy of Nubia: Real One by @ll_mckinney! This is a poignant #OwnVoices YA graphic novel that brings DC’s first Black female superhero (and Wonder Woman’s Black twin sister) into the spotlight in a tale that explores the racist dichotomy of how Black vs. White superheroes are perceived and what it’s like growing up as a Black teen (and superhero) in a world filled with racial inequality, police brutality, school violence and more timely issues affecting young people today. . . Thank you to @vasaglefurniture for gifting me this gorgeous bookshelf! They have so many beautiful pieces, so be sure to stop by and check out their store! . . For the first time in 4 years I’ll be back at SPX. I know this is the first time back for a lot of folks, but oh man it is hard not to take stock of what a difference four years makes. In 2018 Passport was still *just* a mini comic that I was hoping would be taken seriously. This year, not only does it actually exist, but I get to talk about it on a panel with @katrionachapman @tommi_pg and @fffungirl. Come find me at table E13A and pick up a copy, or get yours signed or we can just beam at each other through our masks and glory in the bounty that is comics and @spxcomics 😘✌️✈️💕 . . . . . . . . . . #comics #comix #graphicnovels #yagraphicnovels #ya #spx #spxcomics #spx2022 #passport #comicbokks #comicart (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cif5vl-vOyq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
