A teacher writes the word "eerie" on the chalkboard in front of her class and then asks the young students to tell the class the eeriest story they have. Their stories are strange. Alvin tells the first, "The Village That Vanished…", about two men who follow a map to a field filled with sheep where they meet a strange dude who tells them what happened to the town of Wattersbug. It's not horribly graphic, but it's also not a story I'd expect a kid to tell, though his teacher seems excited. Alice's story, "The Face In The Forest…" features a girl named Luanne who's expected to do everything for her aunt and uncle, though they don't seem happy that she's so helpful. When she goes into the forest in search of wood she meets a sympathetic head. Will it help her, or does it mean her no good? It's hard to say at first though the head seems very friendly, and it says it wants her help.

More stories follow. They involve drones, ghosts, spaceships, aliens, grandparents, and demons. When you're reading the book, don't jump ahead -- it has a fun ending, but you have to read every page to really enjoy it.

This is my favorite spooky kids' graphic novel in a while. I know a few kids who would have enjoyed it in grade school, but it's probably got more appeal for older students and adults, it would make a great read-aloud.

Go With The Flow by Lily Williams and Karen Schneemann

Go With the Flow is a 2019 graphic novel written and illustrated by Lily Williams and Karen Schneemann. The book follows a group of three high school best friends who meet the new girl Sasha, and after an unfortunate period incident welcome Sasha into their group. Each character has their own respective issues with their periods and trying to break the stigma surrounding menstruation. Abby, the artist and activist tries to rally for free and equal access to feminine hygiene products. Brit deals with the underdiscussed issues of painful periods and the complexities of the female reproductive system. Sasha is new to the whole period thing and is bullied after her embarrassing first period by the popular girls at school. In the end they come together to advocate and despite backlash really achieve their goals in breaking the stigma that surrounds something that happens to every woman. 

I thought this was a really cute book and I love the fact that it bluntly addresses a really taboo subject that we’re often times too ashamed to talk about as openly as we need to. It covers a lot of the big overarching issues, like equal access and the pink tax to basic things like accidentally getting your period in public and being shamed. The art style is very cute, I loved the shades of red. Every panel and all of their characters are always wearing or colored in some sort of hue of red which works really well for the point of the novel. I thought the characters were all very cute and relatable, although I had some issues with how fast they became friends. Otherwise, I think this is a really important book for young girls to read that should definitely make its way into the puberty narrative when we talk to our kids about something that is incredibly natural but still some how taboo. This was very cute, very simple and a fun quick read. It’s a good kind of “period fiction”. Get it, cuz, period. Not like historical period. Anyway.

Isaac has OCD, and his worst impulses and bad thoughts about himself buzz around his head, unseen by everyone else, whispering to him and distracting him. After class one day Micah introduces herself and her friend Jaime to him. They're both wowed by Isaac's sketch of a dragon (and so is Jaime's couldn't-be-more-different twin, Carmen), and they invite him to play Swamps & Sorcery with them. Carmen tells him to prepare to venture to the Tower of Greenmoon. Isaac is excited, and clearly a little attracted to Micah; the feeling seems to be mutual.

But his older sister Miriam thinks their mom might have issues with role-playing games, which she thinks lead to compulsions. And she does worry about that and everything else about Isaac's life, so much that Miriam can't get her mom's attention for more than a moment. It feels explosive even though his mom lets him attend a few gaming sessions, and it all comes to a head when Isaac gets a bad grade.

I loved the crush, the sibling relationship, and of course the D&D-like adventures. Every gaming group I've ever been a part of has at least one person who can draw better than everyone else, someone who asked to draw everyone's characters, and that's Isaac. Minor spoiler: It was tough to see his mom take that away from him, but heartening to see how others (including Miriam) help and support him in the end.
