Miss Françoise (17 janvier 1944 - 11 juin 2024)
Miss Françoise Hardy was someone whose work and voice transcended years of work. She was untouchable in her own right. Enigmatic, unforgettable – both on the stage, and off it.
Today she has passed after battling lymphatic cancer over the years, leaving a legacy of music, books and fashion in memoriam. A rock-and-roll Chanson muse with her finger firmly on the yé-yé French ballads of the mid-century, Miss Hardy was a master of soulful crooning.
We have Miss Hardy to thank in so many realms. She was coolest and most talented and beautiful people ever to live. Listen to her music, Watch her movie, read her books. Your life will improve by magnitudes.
Rest in Power !

Rest in peace Françoise Hardy (17 Jan 1944 — 11 June 2024).
"The spring that I wait for all year passes by more and more quickly with age and my heart clenches when I think how little time remains for me to see the lilacs blooming again, even though I want to believe that their beauty, like all forms of beauty, gives us a glimpse of the beyond. Whenever I get a chance, I fill my eyes with the enchanted sight of nature: the blue hyacinths of March, the pink magnolias and red tulips of April, the lilies of the valley, the roses, the peonies... all these marvels that help make our planet the earthy paradise described in the Bible, a paradise that many other humans have pillaged and trashed, and that others — bless them —have respected and maintained. When I am not too tired and time permits, I take a walk in the Parc de Bagatelle. During the week at lunchtime the only living beings that cross your path there are a couple of gardeners, peacocks, and ducks. I have identified four trees that I have arbitrarily established as my friends. First there is the holly on a little side lane; further on, the weeping beech that hangs over the pond, and faces a gigantic purple beech on the other side. I regularly say hello to them and give them my compliments. If there is no one in sight, I embrace the powerful trunks of each of these trees, one after the other, so they can give me a little of their energy if it is in their power to do so, and I thank them when I leave." — Françoise Hardy, 'The Despair of Monkeys & Other Trifles' (2018).

While searching for Halloween songs yesterday, this rocking cover of Ray Charles' classic came my way for some reason! I have seen numerous Viva Las Vegas animated gifs on @thetaoofzoe but haven't seen the film yet!
French singer Sylvie Vartan also covered it in

Stella - Le Silence (1967)
A mere sixteen years old when she recorded this "anti-yé-yé" tune, it has a gimmick that probably drove djs out of their mind. Fun stuff

A rock-and-roll Chanson muse with her finger firmly on the yé-yé French ballads of the mid-century, Miss Hardy was a master of soulful crooning. Tous les garçons et les filles, her crowning hit broke over 2.5 million units of sales. She donned Yves Saint Laurent, Paco Rabanne, Courrège and revolutionized the French-fille aesthetic, melding knits and leather with interchangeability. She was responsible for the naming of Comme des Garçons. Rei Kawakubo named her eponymous label after a Hardy song.
We have Miss Hardy to thank in so many realms. She was coolest and most talented and beautiful people ever to live. Listen to her music, Watch her movie, read her books. Your life will improve by magnitudes.

Rest in Peace, Françoise Hardy. The Queen of yé-yé and one of the most fashionable and creative presences in the French New Wave and beyond.

Please cherish her memory - I highly recommend the Godard film Masculin Féminin as well as her debut album and La Question.
We’ll never forget you.
