Rating 19th Century Men's Fashion Plates (based on how likely I would be to wear the outfit)

Le Beau Monde, 1807
Starting off strong with an early century example. We have this beautiful burgundy chestnut brown in the coat, bookended by the black hat and boots. It even features a walking stick, which as we all know I need to get anywhere, and my beloved snowy white cravat. It's giving winter in a Dickensian sort of fashion, like a young Ebenezer Scrooge. Unfortunately taking off two points for those atrocious sideburns which look like the matted tails of taxidermied squirrels. [8/10]

Le Petit Courrier des Dames, 1850
Something about this feels slightly off, proportions-wise. Maybe it's because my sensibilities lie a good couple decades later in the century later, but it all just seems a bit silly. The jacket hits the wrong place at the hips and the horizontally striped pants feel entirely wrong. But I always do love a double breasted coat, and of course we give points for a cravat. But taken as a whole I'm just not feeling it. [5/10]

L’Elegant, 1853.
Now we're getting somewhere again. The plaid! The lapels! The jaunty blue and green accents! I can't get behind that hair, scalp and facial both, but if we lop off both their heads and replace them with decorative household objects then everything can be forgiven. I'm just not sure how I feel about the pairing of the vest/jacket and the pants on the fellow in the middle, but I'm sure I can chalk up any weirdness to the drawing of the pattern. [7/10]

American Fashions, 1893
That's the real shit. That's the real stuff. My great love of Victwardian men's fashion begins in the 70s and really begins to peak in the 90s. The dignified shoulders! The length of the jacket! The tie! The shoes! The binoculars, held to the eyes of a man who hates to mind his own business! A bit understated in the coloring in comparison to some other examples in this post, but that's really what you get with the time period. [9/10]

L’Elegant, 1840
I need the guy on the left in a way I cannot describe on public television. Rating expunged.
