I genuinely am not quite sure what this means in general but it’s a self described future defining development and I believe Yuuko when she says things.

So is Watanuki still a dream in nature that will get to be real through gathered experience and wishing hard enough? 

(And what is Yuuko?)

Was Watanuki like… the dream reflection accidental existence baby version of Lava Lamp (because of Sakura being in the world of dreams??) who is now his own separate person fighting to retain his existence in the physical world? 

And what future did Watanuki change by wanting to exist to prevent others from being sad?

I think I can safely assume this isn’t the final moment but it sure feels like a big moment all the same.

THEY REALLY DID THIS TO US. 

I can’t believe (I can believe I really can) that they took all the vague details of the plot (like how the seasons change and Watanuki’s birthday happens every now and again and we have some yearly events, but the school situation was never addressed or delved into) and it was all so natural and seamless because like, that’s just how stories work. 

BUT JUST KIDDING THIS WAS ALL A CONSTRUCTION DELIBERATELY BUILT SO THEY COULD TILT IT SIDEWAYS AND SHOW YOU SOMETHING COMPLETELY NEW AT THE LAST MINUTE SO YOU QUESTION EVERYTHING

I love when they do this, but there’s an interesting mix of illusion and reality in the cover. The flowers are all drawn realistically, but are any of them actually there? The ones on her lantern and clothing are just images. The one dangling under the lantern is probably also an ornament. But what about the one in her hair? Ornament or real?

Where does the smoke floating around her also become part of the pattern on her clothing? Where does the real meet the unreal? Is there even a line at all?

You just can’t tell with Yuuko Ichihara!

Ok ok there’s a lot to unpack here

Firstly: the look Watanuki gives the phone when it starts to ring?

The most relatable thing of all. Any time the phone rings it’s an instant nightmare. No thank you. No calls ever.

Secondly: The stark contrast of black in white in the bottom panel? Like crossing boundaries and an inbetween place? Like a space between life and death? Gorgeous.

Thirdly: “You’ll meet many other people in many dreams. And it’ll seem like it’s the very last of parting ways.”

EXCUSE ME??? 

AM I READING THE IMPLICATION OF THAT CORRECTLY???
