XR in Healthcare: Exploring the Future of Medical Training
The integration of XR in healthcare (Extended Reality, which includes both AR and VR) is paving the way for new learning experiences that blend reality with the digital world. By immersing medical professionals in a simulated environment, these technologies allow trainees to practice a variety of procedures and diagnoses with virtual patients, thus enhancing the depth and breadth of their medical education.
AI patient simulators enhance XR technology by introducing dynamic and adaptive scenarios that change based on the user’s actions. This creates a more engaging and realistic training experience than traditional textbooks or video-based learning. Whether it's practicing surgery or handling a critical medical emergency, XR offers a practical, hands-on approach to education that is both scalable and cost-effective.
As healthcare training becomes increasingly digitized, XR-based medical simulations powered by AI are set to be integral in preparing future medical professionals for real-world challenges.

Reading this struck me to my core. This describes me to a T and sheds light on what is wrong with my brain, and I have never before heard it laid out so accurately. I have ADHD, and I have this form of it specifically - without hyperactivity but instead with paralysis. This problem, right here; has genuinely crippled me for many years and has ruined my life, particularly because it is alongside other problems like CPTSD and chronic pain and exhaustion. If I didn't have it, though? If I JUST had the CPTSD and the chronic pain issues and didn't have to deal with my will to act and function being paralyzed? I would be able to actually tackle those other problems... and so I am sure that my life would be radically improved in comparison to where it is now. Wow
I did get a wonderful doctor recently and was finally given an Adderall prescription. What it does for me is gives me the ability to act, it breaks me out of the paralysis. It's not a magic cure however, no drug is; it gives me a short window of maybe three or four hours where it really works its best (and has some irritating side effects.) It also doesn't fix the problem completely, just improves it considerably. But I am very happy to have it. I should look into getting an extended release version...
What I am really wanting to say, though, is to reflect on how utterly devastating invisible illnesses can be for people, and that those include mental ones; even ones like ADHD which people often don't take seriously. Having doctors who are understanding and empathetic, being able to easily get proper medication, and especially having a society that better accommodated disabilities like this and actually helped us out; would make a huge difference for many, many people who are suffering.
Some individuals with AD/HD, especially without hyperactivity, have an activation problem as described by Thomas Brown, Ph.D. in his article AD/HD without Hyperactivity (1993). Rather than a deficit of attention, this means that individuals can’t deploy attention, direct it, or put it in the right place at the right time. He explains that adults who do not have hyperactivity often have severe difficulty activating enough to start a task and sustaining the energy to complete it. This is especially true for low-interest activities. Often it means that they can’t think of what to do so they might not be able to act at all, or, as Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo say in You Mean I’m Not Lazy, Stupid or Crazy?!, they might experience a “paralysis of will” (pg. 65). “The clothes from my trip—a month ago—are just still lying in a heap in the suitcase.” “I spend a lot of time in bed watching TV but my mind isn’t watching TV. I’m thinking about what I should be doing, but I don’t have the energy to do it.”

In the rapidly evolving landscape of digital technology, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and extended reality (XR) have emerged as transformative tools in various industries. From gaming and entertainment to education and healthcare, these immersive experiences are revolutionizing the way we interact with digital content. Central to this revolution are 3D models, which serve as the building blocks for creating rich, engaging, and interactive environments. In this blog, we'll explore how 3D models power AR/VR/XR experiences and the role that 3D asset stores like Znanye play in this dynamic ecosystem.
The Role of 3D Models in AR/VR/XR
Bringing Virtual Worlds to Life
At the heart of any AR, VR, or XR experience are 3D models—detailed, lifelike representations of objects, characters, and environments. These models are meticulously crafted to provide a sense of realism and immersion, which is crucial for creating convincing virtual worlds. Whether it’s a food 3D model in a virtual restaurant or space 3D models for an educational VR experience, the quality and detail of these models significantly impact user engagement and satisfaction.
Enhancing User Interaction
In AR/VR/XR environments, users interact with 3D models in ways that are not possible with traditional 2D interfaces. For example, a 3D model viewer allows users to rotate, zoom, and explore models from different angles, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the object. This interactive element is especially valuable in fields like education and training, where users can engage with complex concepts and scenarios in a hands-on manner.
Customization and Personalization
One of the key advantages of using 3D models in AR/VR/XR is the ability to customize and personalize experiences. Example of how everything is breaking simultaneously: my X-rays aren’t getting read. I had to wait three days for a chest XR read. This should take hours, not days. The clinical usefulness drops substantially if I can’t make quick decisions based on a radiologist’s expertise.
(Do NOT tell me “well just get good at reading chest XR, they’re not that hard.” Go fuck yourself. They’re a tiny fraction of what I do; I’m not inpatient looking at six of them a day. I’m outpatient, doing a ton of psychiatric care in addition to everything else. Unless you want to show up to my rural clinic and manage all my complex bipolar and or psychotic patients who’ve been tried on 10-15 meds before and are still on the verge of suicide, and then go do an endometrial biopsy on someone with postmenopausal bleeding, and then go adjust meds on someone in a heart failure exacerbation who refuses to go to the hospital because the ER is in shambles, don’t tell me how to prioritize my learning time.)
Earlier this week I got an image of a maybe-broken hand. Got a prelim read, but those don’t show up in my inbox. Again, it should be hours, not days, to a final read. Still hadn’t gotten a final read by end of day Friday.
Something is really, really wrong, and it’s breaking the foundational elements of US healthcare.

VR/AR/MR:
XR, or extended reality, is an umbrella term that encompasses Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR). Although all three technologies share similar features, each serves distinct purposes and employs different technologies.
Augmented reality (AR):
Augmented reality is the technology where it overlays computer-generated information on top of our real-world view through glasses, smartphones, or other devices. This computer-generated information can be text, audio-visual, interactive 3d objects.
There are many used cases for AR technology, for example, in Smartphones AR games can use the phone camera to take images and overlay certain gaming features or objects to deliver the gaming experience combined with the real world.
AR smart glasses can also be used just to merge the real world and technology. It can also be used with medical devices to guide and assist navigation for blind or other disabled people.
AR is also used in many other places like architectural visualisation, medical science, education (children’s playbooks) and many more.
Virtual Reality (VR):
VR devices are used as wearable headsets which completely change use’s view from reality to a computer-generated virtual environment. This type of XR has been in existence for a while. The first use of VR for gaming can be traced back to the 1980s.
Virtual reality has mostly been used in entertainment media or games. The first consumer-ready VR product was launched in 2013. Soon the population of VR games grew with it.
VR is also used in some cases for educational and business purposes.
Standalone VR devices, such as the latest meta-Quest 3 can even deliver AAA gaming at ease. The advancement of XR devices and Innovation in technology is bridging the gap between high-end pc and console games to VR gaming.
Mixed Reality (MR):
Mixed reality is the combination of AR and VR, it merges the real world and virtual world. MR technology can be experienced through smartphone or AR wearable devices with virtual objects or characters superimposed into real-world scenes.
The Pokémon GO mobile game, released back in 2016, took the world by storm with its popularity. Pokémon Go which was always named as an AR game is a great example of an MR game. It blends the virtual world of Pokémons with the virtual gameplay mechanics on top of real-world maps and locations.
XR technologies have been establishing their presence in the market for a while now, and with advancements in technology and AI, Machine Learning is at the forefront of the IT world. These are XR's going to be mainstream.
With the recent launch of Apple’s Vision Pro, we have seen the potential of these XR devices growing from complex uses like healthcare, education, and retail, to normal day-to-day activities like watching a movie or a show.
