There’s a Variety article I read today that summarizes how I felt about “Deadpool and Wolverine”. It’s a movie that was made by a genuine Marvel fan, from the fanservice to the disses.
The fanservice in this movie feels like it’s targeting the fans that are really into Marvel. Of course, you have yellow suit Wolverine. But there are references that casual fans probably wouldn’t understand, like Channing Tatum playing Gambit, the Wolverine crucifix, and Henry Cavill Wolverine.
The disses in the movie feel like they also came from a Marvel fan. When Wade says stuff like, “You joined at a low point” and “You’ll be playing this role till you’re 90”, those are the kind of jabs that the fanbase would make. Think of it like this. A hater would probably say something along the lines of superhero movies are the death of cinema, or that we should be watching A24 over anything Marvel related. You know, surface level criticisms. A fan would make digs that they could only do if they’ve been following the universe for a long period of time.
For example, I’m a fan, and I know I’ve made jokes in the past about the whitewashing in Doctor Strange. Or that Agents of SHIELD is better than anything in the main movies. Or that the Netflix Marvel shows were so poorly organized that they failed to properly build up to the Defenders miniseries. Or that the people behind the Fox X-Men movies don’t know how to make a good story without Wolverine. Those are critiques, but I could only make those critiques if I’m a genuine fan who consumes this material.
That’s why I like how Variety described Deadpool as if he was a Marvel fanboy. Because he is! He spends a great deal of the movie fanboying over Captain America and Thor, he views the Avengers as the gold standard of what it means to be a hero, he jokes at the expense of Fox and Disney, and he winks at the audience when he knows that the next scene is something that the Marvel fanbase would truly love. Again, the movie is a love letter to Marvel and the Marvel fanbase and it shows.

Notice in the MCU:
Wanda falls in love with someone who helps her contextualize her grief and pain and view it in a more peaceful and positive light - which is exactly how her mutant father fell in love with her stepfather.
Vision at one point sits contemplatively in front of a chess set - the very game that his father-in-law and stepfather-in-law love to play.
Billy and Tommy escape death-by-disintegration when Billy transfers their consciousnesses into empty bodies - just as their step-grandpa once did.
Even across universes, the parallels manifest.

It's so nice to see people universally celebrating Hugh as Wolverine again. He deserves it and it's about damn time everyone understand why he is such a legend. I feel like a lot of folks either forgot or straight up didn't know due to MCU saturation. The amount of people I've run into who are only just now getting into the X-men movies astounds me. I know I'm not the only Millenial who grew up salivating over the pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe era. It was all we had, and a lot of those movies were and still are fantastic.
Even if it doesn't undo all the passive aggression and callousness us Fox-era fans received over the last five years, it's damn gratifying to know the second-biggest Marvel box-office success ever did so by honoring my childhood and having a damn good time doing it.
And now we've got Feige out here saying that there are no plans to recast Hugh right away and let me tell you, right after bringing the Fox films back and getting to see the UN cut of Dark Phoenix, is all I've ever wanted. I remember not too long ago telling some jaded older fans/friends of mine that I wanted Hugh back as Wolverine as a multiverse cameo, just to stake his claim as the first MCU Wolverine. Nobody believed it would happen. Everyone assumed Marvel wanted that clean slate, that fresh start, and bringing back an older star from a franchise that was dead and buried didn't make sense.
Looks like the power of nostalgia extends further back than 2008, eh~?
I got what I wanted. My guy, my childhood, the legend himself is back and he's here to stay for a while yet. The universe I loved so much is safe thanks to Deadpool and Wolverine--granted, if the other cameos are anything to go by, I have a feeling anything else we see of the Fox Universe will look more like X-men 97...which isn't ideal but I'll take it. Guess a world too grounded in reality doesn't stand out enough in this comic-booky multiverse.
Ah well, what does that matter? The Wolverine is BACK!

Not me crying during the Deadpool and Wolverine credits when the played the tribute to the older movies 😭 Not me absolutely sobbing because OG XMen was one of my first hyperfixations and I was so in love with Rouge and Wolverine that I shaped my personality around them 🥺🥺🥺

Her Harley Quinn video sounds like it really does prove that Lily can NOT go a single video without talking shit about the things she hates, even if it’s supposed to be a positive about something she loves.
What a miserable fucking creature…
Anon I'm trying to cover her fucking Magneto video right now and she talks about Korra SO MUCH the entire second half of my breakdown has almost nothing to do with The X-Men, let alone Erik. (And yes she did mention SU in that video too.)

I read the one joke that Disney asked to be cut out of Deadpool & Wolverine. Yeah, I get the reason for the cut. And honestly, I don’t think the movie would be missing much if it kept the joke in. They already did a “we can’t afford another X-Man?” joke in the other Deadpool movies. It’s not a bad cut, that’s what I’m saying.
Unlike…you know…the Hawkeye show cutting out Clint’s childhood backstory which paralleled Kate’s story…

I'm watching X-Men: First Class and Darwin dying is pissing me off again. "Adapt to this" HE SHOULD!!! THAT'S WHAT HE DOES! HE ADAPTS TO SURVIVE SO HE SHOULD SURVIVE THAT! THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT! Anyway new HC, he crumbled and they thought his was dead, but his powers just decided the best chance of survival was for him not to be a main character. He's fine.

BTW, Kamala's past as an Inhuman is not being erased. She's a mutant and an Inhuman, like the Beyonder.
Huh- I didn’t know the Beyonder was inhuman and mutant either (the only time that I cared about that character was when Claremont wrote him- Claremont really can make ANY character likable… or when Spider-Man was teaching him to poop 🤣)
I still…don’t care for it. I liked Kamala as an inhuman, there was no reason to change it other than “MCU-synergy” and frankly….it sounds like bad fan fiction…
Frankly it pisses me off comics are kowtowing so much to the MCU, because it SUCKS for people who don’t care for the movies.
I know I am going to make some people mad by saying this…but Martin Scorsese *is* a bit right- they DO feel like amusement park movies. They’re not deep cinema; they’re very simplistic writing and cinematography.
I don’t think something being purely entertaining IS bad or wrong- I actually think people who hype up Tarantino, Nolan, or Spielberg as not being this are also kind of wrong because while they’re great films… they’re often not exploring deep concepts.
I personally love old screwball comedies and swashbuckling films and musicals…but I would never argue it’s on the same level as Bergman, or even directors like Mankiewicz or Hitchcock….
The problem is that Superhero films used to have a “style”- they used to feel like a “creative project” instead of pure “cash grab” and “banging action figures together”.
Singer, no matter how you feel about him, his X-films had a “style” to them. So did Burton’s Batman films. So did Synder and Nolan. So did Raimi. So did Whedon.
Now, I can’t tell who the director is on most DC or Marvel movies. Synder (again, no matter how you feel about him) was the last director who had a clear vision and aesthetic for his films, whether you loved it or hated it.
I would say Star Wars has much of the same problem- love him or hate him, George Lukas at least had a clear aesthetic and style. His films were at least always visually interesting.
There’s a line between art and money- it’s fine for art to make money, but if you go too far into Capitalism…people start feeling it’s inauthentic and JUST about making money (the difficulty of Warhol and Damien Hirst’s legacies lol!). I think Disney crossed too far into Capitalism that people just feel annoyed watching their films.
Art has to somewhat “feel” like art…otherwise it just feels cheap. (I also feel like this is why Taylor Swifts recent album crashed and burned- too far into “Capitalism” that it feels unauthentic and “cheap”…but I already digressed enough lol)
So yeah- I think it’s a mistake for comics to embrace the movies and not be its own separate entity, because the movies kind of *are* a fad and creative project that’s losing steam….where comics can usually last for long periods of time
