Race, Class, and Gender in the High School Curriculum

    I wanted to cover "wellness" from the female perspective. I wanted to feed two birds with one scone and teach about mental health while also providing female (race, class, gender) representation in literature. This year, a woman of color will be appointed to the supreme court, two years ago our nations first woman of color was elected vice president, and doggonit, I think women in the 2020's should have their own unit in English 9!

    Wellness is not linear, nor is the female experience. I chose: The Bell Jar (Plath), The Poet X (Acevedo), Jackpot (Stone).

    In The Bell Jar, Esther Greenwood navigates through young adulthood, as an aspiring author, who deals with depression. By the end of the novel, she has a better idea of what is good for her wellness. The students can discuss what Esther's life would have been like were she a male and how gender is dealt with in the book.

    In The Poet X, Xiomara Baptista grows up in Harlem and learns the love of poetry. It is through writing that she finds a catharsis, and creates an escape into her own wellness. This novel is written in poems, to tell a story of her year in high school. She is of Dominican Republic decent and was born into Catholicism. Her mother is strict and her father is uninvolved in her life. Students can discuss what her experience would have been like had she been born male, White, or Protestant (or Jewish, Muslim, Atheist, etc.).

    In Jackpot, Ricco (woman of color) struggles to balance school, work, and family, while making sure that her family does not get evicted in Norcross, or a suburb of Georgia. She lives with her mother, who works two jobs, and her six year old brother, Jax, who gets meningitis and has to be hospitalized. One day, she sells a winning lottery ticket (over $100,000,000) at her gas station job. Weeks go by and nobody has claimed cash prize. She teams up with Alex, a well off schoolmate, to hunt down the winning ticket and discovers that money can not buy happiness, but a hundred mill wouldn't hurt, either. Wellness is difficult for people who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. This book legit made me cry! Students can discuss what Ricco's life would have been like, were she born in the middle class, with two parents, or male. -Felix

I pretty much have been playing exclusively Sims 2 as of late, and my university Sims needed a cozy coffeehouse to come relax and study in. What's better than a coffeehouse? A _magical _coffeehouse, of course! Now my witches-in-training can go relax somewhere where they feel welcomed. A ton of content was converted from TS4, as I don't play it and don't plan on playing it but some of the objects are pretty nifty. a monologue on burning

At the age of four, Xiomara Hernandez shoved me on the playground when we were in Pre-K. She kicked sand in my eyes and called me a stupidhead. I remember it so vividly, it could have happened yesterday, but it happened about thirty years ago. I’d told her that she was bossy and ugly, but I’m a weak kid at this point. I burn at the thought of a girl overpowering me, I knew my older brothers and father would taunt me because this happened, but what could I do? I was a weak kid.

I’m eight years old, I like Tiffany Marks. Who didn’t? She was the prettiest girl in class. We got paired up to do a science fair project together. She insisted on me coming over to her house to do it, which was convenient because I really didn’t want to clean my room. Eight-year-old me was an absolute pig. I confessed my feelings to Tiffany after spending two weeks going to her house and sharing moments that are more intimate than I shared with later girlfriends. She told me she liked me too, but not that way. And I felt like I was lit on fire.

At the age of sixteen, I’m dating Janice Guggenheim. Our entire relationship is her telling me how much of a loser I am and berating me for the fact that I don’t drive a car. I’m sixteen and we have sex and she’s the prettiest girl who dared ever speak to me. My sixteen-year-old brain couldn’t fathom the thought that I could ever do better, so I took it and I loved Janice in ways I probably shouldn’t have. No one should be made to feel anything less than what they are, contrary, and that’s what I tried to do for Janice. One night, Janice goes to a party without me because I couldn’t drive. She fucks some other guy, calls me up the next morning and tells me about it, every detail, how much better he was than me and how they were going to go steady and how she was sorry.

She wasn’t sorry.

Coming into adulthood, my bones crackled like firewood and my flesh felt like a black smog. Coming out of childhood, my idea of women was that they hurt. They hurt and they hurt and I looked at my poor dad and how mom just left him with three boys to raise on his own. She died, shot while on duty, she used to be a police officer and dad never stopped drinking about it. He never stopped burning, I see it in the way he sits in his chair on some nights with a bottle of Brandy. Smoldering cinders, piles of ash, he looked like how cigarettes probably felt.

I grow older, I get wiser. I learn that the thoughts of the boy who became a man weren’t exactly right. I learn this around the age of twenty-two when I’m sleeping with any girl that’ll look at me any type of way to build up a destroyed confidence. I sleep with Nia Mills and she burns me in the worst way, the type that requires a shot in the ass from the family doctor. I learned the hard way to slow down.

At twenty-six, I meet her, Lilian Taylor. My future wife. The woman who I swear is my soul mate. She smiled and I wondered where five years of my life went when we were at the altar, exchanging vows. She was magic, the secret to everything and I loved her more than she’d ever know. That’s what I thought when we laid next to each other in bed and she looked into my eyes and told me how much she loved them when she could see them without my glasses on.

I was every bit in love with her when the divorce papers came in the mail.

I’m sitting in a dirty bar, back in my hometown, my dad who’s older and tired and wrinkled sitting next to me with a drink in hand. I want to cry, I want to break and fall apart, something vital had been taken from me and I was so broken that I couldn’t even bring myself to cry. I let my head hang, I stared down at the tumbler filled with glass and whiskey that warmed the place where my chest used to throb softly, in Morse code, to her, hoping she’d hear it.

"As your father, I’m supposed to say something that’ll make you feel better or…" He trailed off, I looked over at him, a relic of something long lost and saw my future. "As your father, I’ve prided myself on one thing, I always told you the truth. I never bullshitted you or your brothers. There’s no Tooth Fairy, there’s no Santa Clause, there’s no Easter Bunny."

I stayed silent, knocked back my tumbler of whiskey and placed it back down before asking the bartender to pour me another.

"There’s no recovering from this. You lose. You lost. That’s it." He said, sipping his beer. "The rest of your days are going to be miserable at best. Don’t kill yourself, if you kill yourself I’m going to fucking be pissed. College tuition wasn’t cheap for you to just throw it all away. But you know what? I’d understand. Don’t make it right, though."

That’s what my dad told me.

My entire life has been one long message. Women are fire, they’re born fire and they remain fire until they die. They burn you when they’re played with, they burn weakly or they burn strongly, but most of all when you’re in the cold of night, when you have them and I mean you really have them…they warm the space inside of you and if I had to burn a thousand times over for that feeling…

I’d burn a thousand times and then ask to burn again.

Where You Lead: Here Comes The Son Pt. III

Summary: There's always two sides to every tale. In this situation...there's five sides: the triplets and their parents'.

This installment takes place before the first part, before the dinner with Henry & Jacinda.

Mat knocked on the door of the yellow house that sat in the middle of Mockingbird Lane. He forgot just how many streets had those ridiculously cheery names, with equally pukeworthy houses. There was a reason he had wanted to escape the small town and get into the city. Stars Hollow had been home once, but there were times it just felt so…suffocating.

 The door opened and Lucy stood there, looking decent for having a 2-month-old. Her dark curls were tousled and she wore a light pink sweater, paired with white leggings. In her arms was the baby in question, little Sebastian. She looked exhausted and yet held the baby with such love, in a way he had only seen parents ever do with their babies. He supposed it was something that just couldn’t be explained to someone without kids.

 “Hey,” he said.

Lucy smiled. “Hey.” She gave him a quick hug and then stepped to the side. “Come on in.”

 He walked into the cluttered living room, realizing how little had changed since he was last there. Lucy was a photographer and Melody taught dance, so both of them were artists. That lead to their home being a bit of organized chaos. Mismatched furniture, with fuzzy throw blankets folded up for use. There was a baby swing in the corner, along with a few other items clearly meant for his new nephew. Photographs practically swallowed the room whole, ranging from family to Melody’s work to places they had visited.

 “Is Mel home?” Mat asked, wondering about his sister-in-law.

“No,” Lucy replied, placing her son into the swing and fiddling with a few buttons. “She’s got a tap class tonight.”

Xiomara exited the kitchen, wearing a blazer and jeans, her hair loose just like Lucy’s. They weren’t identical by any means but the sisters looked so much alike. “I am, though.”

“Xo.” Mat only got to hug her for a minute before feeling his legs be attacked.

“Uncle Matty!”

 Mat looked down and found Xiomara’s daughter standing there. At 5-years-old, she was so much like her mother: long dark curls, brown eyes and the widest smile you’d ever seen (though he noticed she was missing a tooth now).

 Little Wren entered the family how most of the first babies in the family did, unexpectedly and young. Xiomara was in her finishing up her junior year of college when she discovered that she was pregnant. Needless to say, it was a shock, but her parents stood by her side and supported whatever she wanted to do. The father wasn’t a boyfriend, moreso a friends with benefits situation and Xiomara gave him a choice, no guilt. He walked away and hadn’t been seen since. When the baby was born, she was named Wren Catalina Cassidy, after the man Xiomara had always idolized most. Despite how difficult it was, Xiomara finished college and went to law school, graduating right before Wren died. He finally got one lawyer in the family like he always dreamed.

 “Hey kiddo,” Mat lifted up his niece and pressed a kiss to her cheek.

“Where have you been?” Wren questioned.

Mat chuckled. “Working, lots.”

She dropped her head back dramatically. “That’s boring.”

“It is, isn’t it?” He put her down. “Hey, did you bring some toys or something?”

“She did,” Xiomara cut in. “Go play in Tia Lucy’s room, the adults have to talk.”

 Wren sighed, but stalked away, the sound of a door closing could be heard a few minutes later. Mat sat down on the couch, Lucy and Xiomara sitting with him.

 “So,” Lucy said. “Talk to Mom and Dad much lately?”

Mat pursed his lips. “Mom some. Dad…not so much.”

“You gotta just rip the band-aid off. You were able to open up to us, remember?”

He snorted. “That wasn’t so much opening up. That was more…me being a huge dick.”

Xiomara shrugged. “I think we all needed it.”

 The triplets had been super close as kids, doing everything together. Lucy and Xiomara were easily the ones in charge, with Mat following everything that they did. As they became teens, they slowly began to grow apart. Lucy and Xo were remaining the best of friends, but Mat resented them for how their parents acted, not realizing at the time that it wasn’t their fault. It was partially why he chose Stanford. He had gotten into Yale and NYU too, but so had Xiomara was attending their dad’s alma mater and Lucy was going to school in New York City. California was the furthest away, the place he could be his own person. Not a triplet, not a Cassidy, just Mat.

 Then when Xiomara got pregnant, he felt like he got even more lost in the shuffle with his parents. Every conversation was about making room for the baby at their house since she was moving out of the dorms and back with them, how awful the father was and everything they would need. They spent a trip out to California looking at numerous baby stores with Mat in tow, feeling the anger fester as they didn’t even ask about his studies or how he was doing in school, worrying far more about their pregnant daughter.

 It all lead to a huge blowup come that Christmas. Xiomara was only a month from her due date and it was all anyone could talk about. Mat was drinking and spent most of the time hiding out. When the three were alone in their dad’s old room at their Grandpa’s, trying to get him to join the party and Lucy made a joke about him being a hermit, he just snapped.

 “Maybe I just need some air from the damn Xiomara show!”

 The fight had probably been the worst they had ever had. It was lucky that loud music was playing and no one noticed them gone, because they went at it. Their entire childhood was dragged out. They replayed most moments, with Lucy and Xiomara vehemently defending their parents at first…until they couldn’t. Suddenly, it was all laid out in front of them. Mat would later apologize for taking it out on them, as it wasn’t their fault, but they felt guilty anyway. Even so, no one knew how to tell their parents.

 “I just don’t think they want to hear it,” Mat said.

“They’re not bad people,” Lucy told him. “They fucked up, and I don’t even think they realize it.”

“That’s the shit of it. If they did, that would be one thing. But they don’t and it just…I don’t want to have to be the one to say it.”

Xiomara shrugged. “But if you don’t, how is anything ever going to get done?”

 Mat sighed, thinking over his sisters’ words. A timer went off in the kitchen, which got Lucy to her feet and going in there. Wren started calling from the bedroom and Xiomara excused herself, heading down the hall. Mat pushed himself up, walking over to the swing and picking up Sebastian. He looked down into his nephew’s eyes, letting him wiggle and coo, feeling a tug at his heart. He hadn’t been there much after Wren was born, he started working in New York. She was getting older, now Sebastian was here.

 His mind floated to the past few months, all the doctors and the tests. The chest pains that had started and the fears. Sitting in the doctor’s office and wondering what would happen if he didn’t make things right with his family. Finding out that he had the same condition as his grandfather, but that he was younger, it could be treated with medication and exercise. He would live a long healthy life.

 “No need to make a bucket list,” his doctor had said.

 That didn’t mean that there shouldn’t be one.

 Lucy came back into the room, smiling at the two of them. “Wow, who knew you were good with babies.”

“You don’t know, I could have one, one day.”

“There’s still time, we’re not 30, yet.”

“We’ve got nothing but time.” Mat’s eyes stayed on the baby’s before looking back at her. “You know how Nana Belle wants to move, but she doesn’t know what to do with the house?”

“Yeah, she’s afraid of strangers owning it.”

“Well…I think I’m gonna buy it.”

Lucy tilted her head. “Really?”

“Yeah.” Mat looked back down at Sebastian. “Life is way too short to be far away from family.”

Within the Where You Lead verse : If Lucy had a kid with anyone.

So, I actually see Lucy refusing to get pregnant because her family has a lot of multiples running rampant throughout (she’s a triplet, Wren and Belle had twins. Alba ends up having twins herself.). Her wife Melody uses a sperm donor for them to have a child. Matias comes out as gay and adopts with his husband. Xiomara is the only one to actually get pregnant, but that’s another story for another day. Moving onto Light Song’s child.

Name: Sebastian Henry Gold-Oceano

Gender: Male

General Appearance: Dark hair and matching eyes. He actually tends to dress well and not just because he goes to a private school. He takes great pride in his appearance, taking longer than his mothers do in the bathroom.

Personality: Quiet, kind of shy, which is a rarity in the Mills-Gold family. He would much rather be curled up with a good book or doing school work then go out and party. He does have a good group of friends.

Special Talents: While he is an amazing writer like his grandpa and mom, he puts a lot of his focus into math. He’s one of the rare people to be really good at both and his dream is to one day be a math professor at Yale. His great-great-grandpa would be so proud.

Who they like better: Lucy understands him more and understands the overwhelming feeling that is their family. Melody grew up an only child so she really loves having so many people around and can be a bit much to handle. She and Sebastian still have a close bond, though.

Who they take after more: He’s not really like either of them in personality, though he looks a lot like Melody. His sperm donor is a friend of theirs from high school who visits once or twice a year (though he’s not a father figure at all, more an uncle) and he acts a lot like him, actually.

Personal Head canon: Wren passes away when he’s still quite young and he doesn’t have a lot of memories of him. However, he spends a lot of time with Neal and Henry, because he loves to hear stories about him.
