A Very Subjective Show Recommendation
Basic Info:
Titles: Word of Honor
Main Leads: Zhang Zhe Han as Zhou Zi Shu and Gong Jun as Wen Ke Xing
Overall Tropes etc.: Morally Grey/Black Main Leads | Soulmates | Revenge Story | Childhood Friends to Lovers | Hidden Identity | WantedCriminal4WantedCriminal | Feral4Feral | Ride or Die | "I'm dying" vs "I won't let you" | Amnesia | Fake Identity | Found Family | Criminals adopting an orphan and being better parents | Villain(?) Fuckery | Non Traditional Husband-Wife dynamics | Playing House As Everyone Tries to Kill Them | "I WILL DIE FOR YOU" "no, I WILL DIE FOR YOU" | Villain Redemption Questionmark
How many episodes: 36
Trigger Warnings / Content Warnings: Non-graphic non-traditional self-harm, child abuse, child death, death of family members, death of loved ones, drugging, alcohol, torture, forced suicide via poison, non-graphic non-traditional suicide attempt, violence, brainwashing, hints of incest (between cousins), sexual harassment (background character perpetrator @ background characters, secondary femme character - perpetrator gets killed)
My plot description:
Zhou Zishu who is a former Wuxia-CIA leader gets so mentally unwell that he decides to leave his organization through a prolonged suicide to get at least few years of 'normal' life. He pretends to be a homeless alcoholic-beggar when a too pretty poetry-speaking Wen Kexing who sees Zishu's shoulder blades and decides 'that's my future husband'. Since that moment onward he stalks Zishu because yes he's that unwell. Zishu stumbled on a massacre and accidentally adopts an orphan in the process. The orphan has some very sought-after artefact so Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing try to keep him alive as the not-so metaphorical ghosts from their pasts try to kill them all.
MyDramaList plot description:
In order to leave the assassin organization The Window of Heaven, the leader Zhou Zi Shu performs an obligatory departure technique, leaving him with three years left to live. He disguises his face and tries to live the remainder of his days as a drunkard wandering the martial arts world. Three months later, he meets the mysterious Wen Ke Xing, who immediately notices Zhou Zi Shu’s façade. The two then grow closer when they get entangled in a conspiracy regarding the Glazed Armor, a protected legendary key to a powerful armory.
SCORING:
Chemistry between characters: Off the charts, convinced this show and the amount of the not subtle queerness in it is the reason why China did a temporary ban on queer romance adaptations. 1000000/10. Gong Jun made 'did you know i like men' into a facial expression.
Plot: 8.5/10, yes we have the artefact and armory thing but honestly the relationship of the leads and their relationships with others take the main chair. Overall though I liked the plot.
Ending: Cried. From two reasons. 10/10.
Did it drag aka did I feel the need to skip forward: Never, I rewatched it in full like 5 times by now I think. 10/10.
Was it easy to understand while going in blind: Honestly? Yes. It's more character driven than plot driven. 10/10.
Other characters: Honestly, loved everyone on screen. Obviously the villains were hate-able, but played well. Loved all of the supportive characters - especially Wen Kexing's and Zhou Zishu's little found family - so it was nice to watch even when main leads weren't on screen for X time. 10/10.
Other Big Pros:
Wen Kexing's costumes. His make up and wardrobe. Whoever was responsible - I hope your pillow is cool and you may never stub your toe. Chefs kiss.
Gu Xiang and her himbo husband - all they needed was her walking him on a literal leash along with the metaphorical they already have.
Zishu's wigs look amazing. Just wanted to say.
Everyone is so pretty I'm experiencing bisexual rage.
STRONG!!! WOMEN!! WHO ROCK!!! SHIT!!!! UPPPPPP!!!
Thoughts/Opinions with some spoilers:
I know this show gave a heart attack to few censors at least. I have no idea how they got away with so much - ZZS and WKX calling each other sOULMATES? Overall cannot recommend it enough. It's easily digestible, engaging and will have you crying, squeeing and fanning yourself. Sometimes all at the same time.

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost
Tumblr media
Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.
A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.
You can find all the songs on Bilibili. The official Weibo can be found here. The game's website, which includes all characters appearing so far in the game, can be found here, and its Weibo can be found here.
(If you prefer YouTube, I've also put together a handy playlist. Please know that most of these videos are reposts though, so please watch the original Bilibili MVs if you can!)
This blog is where I will be posting everything I feel like I need to say about the songs in this project. A lot of it is lifted from my Twitter account but will be in much more detail. Note that I probably won't touch collab songs, or songs that don't focus solely on the project's own characters.
Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese, nor am I an expert on Chinese history. Therefore, I cannot reliably translate the lyrics to these songs, nor my words should be taken as gospel. I am merely a nerd gushing about my hyperfixation.

AS BEAUTIFUL AS YOU, a review. (Chinese drama, 40 episodes)
"In my position, I have my own hardships. Love is not everything in my life... But in love, there is only you."  --- Han Ting
"As Beautiful As You" is a lovely tale about how a couple in the same field balances love and career despite differing perspectives and challenges.
Ji Xin and Han Ting are at a crossroads. Ji Xing is starting her own business after resigning from her job at a respected medical company. On the other hand, Han Ting had just been appointed CEO of Dongyang Medical, the most significant medical equipment company in China. Knowing and admiring Ji Xiang and her potential, Han Ting invested in her company, developing a complex personal and professional relationship. Their relationship was challenging but eventually became a testament to their love and commitment.
---------------------- WARNING: Spoiler Alerts --------------------------
Setting
The story is set in the field of medical advances, and I initially thought the backstory would be too complicated to understand. Fortunately, the drama demonstrated the need and the technical aspects of integrating AI into medical technology in an easily digestible form. For instance, Ji Xing's company re-creates tailor-made bones through 3D printing, a revolutionary technique that could potentially change the medical industry. I was surprised that I actually enjoyed learning about these possible medical advances. The director and scriptwriters did an excellent job showing this drama aspect.
On Men and Love
The beauty of Ji Xing's love story lies in the unique contrast between Zichen and Han Ting. This juxtaposition adds depth to the characters and intrigues the audience, helping them understand why Han Ting is the perfect match for Ji Xing.
Ji Xing is a passionate woman who wants to make a difference. She is willing to sacrifice and risk a comfortable office job to achieve innovation in her field.
The drama opens with Ji Xing in a relationship with Zichen, a kind and caring doctor. He prioritises her and seems to understand the demands of her job. He is a guy who will put family and relationships above his job, checking most of the boxes of an ideal boyfriend.
On the other hand, Han Ting, as CEO of Dongyang Medical, has many responsibilities. Intelligent and cunning, his work doesn't allow him to always prioritise personal relationships. He understands his role in society and China's medical advancement and has to make decisions accordingly.
On paper, Zichen may seem ideal for Ji Xing. However, Han Ting understands and supports Ji Xiang without resentment, as seen in the drama. As their fights illustrate, without giving too many spoilers, their shortcomings lead to decisions that hurt each other. And here lies the strength of their relationship. Despite not being the noblest of characters, they eventually understood each other and were willing to compromise—accepting each other's calling in life and developing a relationship around it.
The strength of this drama is that it shows that sometimes, our ideal partner is based on our choices and the person we choose to be rather than on what society dictates. Having said that, I like that Zichen is a likeable bro instead of the usual drama formula of an evil ex-boyfriend. He is an excellent boyfie, Han Ting is just a better one for Ji Xing.
Love to Hate: Wei Qui Zi
OMG, Qui Zi is the ultimate pick-me girl. Way before there were issues between Ji Xiang and Yichen, she had been showing Yichen how much of a "girlfriend' material she is and asking questions to create conflict between Ji Xing and Yichen. "Pick me, PICK me, PICK MEEE!!!!" Yuck!!! Even when Yichen turns her down, she will still go to his place to do her pick-me routine.
By the way, I'm not girl-hating here. As a comment I read said, when Yichaen and Ji Xing broke, he was free to date whoever he wanted. Qui Zi, supposedly still friends with Ji Xiang and part of her inner circle, should have cared about how her relationship would affect Ji Xing and their friendship. At the very least, and this is the bare minimum, she should have waited until after 6 months of relationship grieving before making the moves on Yichen and talked to Ji Xing if something was developing. Oh, and the way she put pressure on Ji Xing to attend her wedding--- so hateful. We all know it is to save her face from the possible societal backlash of being a snake.
Ultimately, the pick-me girl got what she wanted, but it will always be with the knowledge that she is the second choice and only because she is a helpful, unpaid maid with money.
Yes, I might have written this review to vent about the pick-me girl. But hey, we all need a bit of drama in our lives, right?
Cheers for the Girlies
One of the most endearing aspects of this story is the relatable and heartwarming friendship between Ji Xing, Lili, and Xiao Meng. Their bond, built on love, understanding, and respect, is a joy to watch and adds depth to the narrative. If I have one request, it is a need for a b?tch fest about pick-me girl.
Secondary Romances
While the secondary characters are charming, their stories, though cute, feel unnecessary and distract from the main narrative. The time invested in telling their stories made the drama feel excessively long, which might disappoint some viewers. Although it didn't deter Han Ting and Ji Xing's story, it didn't add to it either.
Ending
I'm all for a happy ending, but it was too perfect for me. Initially, the cunning Han Ting initiated Doctor Cloud as an open source, raising my eyebrows. Then I remembered that Volvo had opened a patent for the 3-point seatbelt because saving lives is more important than profit. Okay, my bad. But to have all girls, even the pick-me girl, have their happily-ever-after endings simultaneously... not to mention how Han Ting suddenly became admirable to those who plotted against him--- Hmmmmm...
Chemistry
Good, but not great.
Acting
Great! Even the secondary characters stepped up. However, if I were to nitpick, and this is coming from a loving place, I wish Tan Song Yun (Ji Xing) had a more natural, easy-flowing laugh. Love her, by the way.
Recommendation
If you are looking for a quick, easy-to-watch, kilig romance (which I super love), this is probably not for you. The drama could have been shorter, especially if they edited the secondary characters' love story. However, if you are looking for a good, well-developed story with a strong foundation for its characters, then I highly recommend this drama. It has an interesting take on romance, love, and China's medical technology advancement.
Rating
8 to 8.5, depending on my mood-- hehe:)

Boys Planet Dual Position Battle, final bits and thoughts
Tumblr media
This recap will cover the final point reveals from the end of episode 7, as well as my final thoughts on the performances, including my own ranking and my analysis of MNET screentime allocation (I have the numbers, my loves).
Ranking announcement from the end of ep 6
Ok, here’s the ranking announcement from the end of episode 6. At this point, ep 8 is probably out, so this is out of date, but it’s still kind of interesting.
What I did is, I put the votes in my spreadsheet and found the average number of votes per trainee, which turned out to be 818,005. Then I had the spreadsheet calculate what percent of the average vote each person’s vote was. I think that helps put the number of votes in perspective. For example, international sweetheart Sung Hanbin’s 3.3 million votes represented 404% of the average (in other words, more than four times the average!). Meanwhile, poor Feel Special member Lee Donggun’s 81,739 votes represents about 10% of the average. Ouch.
What’s kind of interesting is that the top 15 were all 123% or more of the average or higher, while from 16 to 51, they were all 89% or lower of the average. It’s really a kind of haves and have-nots situation here.
People who were on a team that got the 100,000 benefit will be marked in blue. People who also got the 150,000 personal benefit will be marked in purple. Members of Zoom are marked in green (because I think they should have won.)

The Performances, the votes, and the rankings
In the last ten minutes or so of episode 7, they gather the trainees together in what might be the space where the audience usually stands, and torture them for a bit before finally revealing how many votes each team got. The winner within each category gets to perform on MNET countdown, each member gets 100,000 extra points, and the number one ranked team member on that team gets an extra 150,000 extra points.
Below, I list the songs, the audience votes they received, and the total screen time (adding up the episode 6 segment and the longer segment in episode 6 or 7). I list them in order of audience vote.
Vocal and Rap
Tomboy 860 votes, 27 minutes of screentime
Man in love 752 votes, 14.5 minutes of screentime
Limousine 719 votes, 13.5 minutes of screentime
Not Spring… 617 votes, 15 minutes of screentime
Winner: Tomboy; Zhang Hao gets the extra benefit
My thoughts:
My favorite is easily Limousine. I just loved this performance. Man in Love and Not Spring were about tied for me; each had one singer I quite enjoy and a few singers I don’t enjoy as much, and neither was a song that I exactly want to listen to over and over. I guess Tomboy actually came in last for me -- I would rather listen to any of the other three again than listen to Tomboy again. If I’m watching the performances, then I’d rather watch Limousine the most -- the performance is so emotional and so good -- but after, that I’d obviously choose to watch Man in Love to see TaeRae’s weird elf face that I like so much. So, putting all that together, my rank is:
Limousine
Man in Love
Not Spring…
Tomboy
Vocal and Dance
Love Killa 840 votes, 20.5 minutes minutes of screentime
Home 716 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Feel Special 677 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Butterfly 664 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Winner: Love Killa; Kim Gyuvin gets the extra votes
My thoughts:
None of these performances exactly floated my boat. Love Killa was marred by sort of blank performances, in my opinion (though it’s cool with me if you liked it, hope I’m not yucking your yum). Home was lovely at times but marred by tight, strained vocals here and there. Feel Special was a mess, brightened by Woongki's cuteness and, honestly, Z-bo's cheerful performance (I'm not his biggest fan, but it's not like the audience vote came out of completely nowhere). And Butterfly just sort of fell apart, as beautiful as Chen Kuan Jui's dancing was. I don’t really want to watch any of these performances again, or listen to them either.
I tried thinking, ok, which one would I want to watch a fancam of? For example, if it was a fancam of Gyuvin from Love Killa vs. a fancam of Woongki from Feel Special vs. a fancam of Chen Kuan Jui from Butterfly vs. a fancam of Yoon Jong Woo from Home, which would I prefer? And I found myself just ranking them based on how much I like the song itself. So my ranking is meaningless. They're all tied for 2nd place. No one is in first. First place is held in reserve for how good Love Killa would have been if Yoon Jong Woo and/or Ricky had been in the group instead of Matthew and/or Seo Won. (Sorry! I love Seo Won and want to get fro-yo with him, but the song didn't really suit him.)
Rap and Dance
Law 846 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Zoom 813 votes, 14 minutes  of screentime
Gang 798 votes, 12 minutes of screentime
Rush Hour 742 votes, 20.5 minutes of screentime
Winner: Law; Park Hanbin gets the extra votes
My thoughts:
This one is easy. Zoom. Zoom is my winner, hands down.
I can see why Law won. It was exciting and sexy and the boys looked good. I like all five of these trainees a lot and think they're great performers. But here’s the thing about Law -- it’s so fucking good the first few times you watch it, but then it gets kind of dull. It’s just all kind of monotonous dancing, you know? Yeah, there’s the stupid flag wave, but there’s nothing else to break it up.
In contrast, I keep noticing more cool things about Zoom as I watch it over and over. Like, the detail of how, when Wumuti does that kind of lifted leg butt wiggle on the line, “Wumumutiti!,”  the other trainees do a far scaled down version of the move, so that they’re supporting him but your eye still stays on Wumuti. It’s so subtle, but it’s cool because it controls where your focus is. I like being led around visually as I watch a dance -- tell me where I should look, choreography! Also, and I’m aware that this isn’t a unique take, but I love the way that the end of each rap section connects to the beginning of the next one. It makes it all feel like this is a real team, not just trainees who got stuck with each other. And I get so excited when I hear Wumuti’s awesome screech “Lights Camera Action baby!” and I know it’s Haruto’s dance break. YES!!!! Haruto, hit that breakdance pose and hold it for the camera click sound! It’s also so fun to watch Haruto’s fan cam and see him cheerfully clowning around with the other trainees when they were on the sidelines, during the performance. Ollie's cute rap, Hyunbeen saying "braggadocious," it's all so charming. They’re just all having so much fun. They’re IN the performance.
For the record, I assume it was Keita behind most of what’s good here. From what I’ve heard, he did basically everything for this song, and did a lot in previous challenges, too. Keita’s so good that even MNET’s editing can’t hide him. The judges won’t shut up about him and every single other trainee respects him. I’m so glad that the audience sees it too.
So, Law won over Zoom in part (in my opinion) because Law was sexier -- I have a whole other post about how I think that Zoom’s styling really brought them down. But it may also have been the scheduling. I saw someone talking (in the comments section of The Bias List) about how she was in the audience for the taping of these performances! Jealous. According to her, it took ages and ages, with lots of time in between performances. She says Zoom was the last performance and by then, it was midnight and the audience was exhausted by then. But the team started performing and it was so energetic and fun that everyone in the audience jumped into life again. This is all according to a person on the internet, I can’t substantiate it, but I don’t know, it kind of rings true.
It would be like MNET to try to sabotage Keita. Production had to know how good Zoom was and that it was likely to win, which would give 100,000 points to Ollie, Wumuti, Haruto, and Park Hyunbeen, and almost certainly would mean 250,000 points for Keita. If you look at the vote list above, you can see how much 100,000 points would mean for most members on this team. Yes this is just an interim vote and the final tally would be bigger overall, but even so, 100,000 points would help lock Haruto into safe territory, it would probably ensure Ollie's survival, and it would give Wumuti and Hyunbeen a fighting chance. 250,000 more votes might also move Keita up one space in the top 9. Scheduling Zoom last meant that it was an exhausted, cranky crowd who were voting, and that probably hurt it.
Anyway, enough about Zoom and Law. What about the other two groups?
As for Ggang, I think it was never going to appeal to me much because the song itself isn’t really my style. It’s not the trainees’ fault at all -- they did a decent job. But nothing about this performance specifically grabbed my attention to where I’d want to watch it over and over, and my little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon's shirt lift joke didn’t strike my fancy.
And of course, Rush Hour just drags my spirit down when I try to watch it. I don’t know if I’d feel differently if I didn’t know the back story, but I do know the backstory, and I can’t turn that part of my brain off.
So in the end, I guess my rank is:
Zoom
Zoom
Zoom
The other teams
Oh, and here’s my pie chart of the number of minutes devoted to each team. It’s kind of wild to see how little time was devoted to Zoom compared to Tomboy, isn’t it?
Tumblr media
As for the new songs that they’re going to be performing for the “Artist Battle”...
Oriental Pop “Switch” - sounds like a lost NCT Dream song
Sentimental Hip Hop “SuperCharger” - fast paced, kind of like Law
R&B Pop “Over Me” is sexy and charismatic
New-tro synth pop “Say My Name” is cute and lighthearted
Funk Pop “En garde” is sort of weirdly forgettable.
Based on my theory on how important sexiness is, I think most of them will want #3, whether it suits them or not. Dancer types like Wang Zi Hao will probably want #2, and cutie pies like Woongki will probably want #4. It’ll be fun to see who ends up in which group, and whether it was the song they wanted or not. I’ll especially be interested in where the fans put Matthew, because he keeps trying to do sexy concepts and I think he’d be much better suited for something more like #4.
Ok! We're finally done! And episode 8 is out. In fact, it's been out for a week if you knew where to look, and I did know where to look, but I have held back and didn't spoil myself.
Hope you're having a lovely day, hope that good things happen to you, and hope that all your pants are real sparkly. See you in the next one!
