3 Ways Automation is Revolutionizing Small Businesses
According to the most recent Small and Medium Business Trends Report, small businesses that are embracing automation are thriving, while those not embracing automation are struggling. As part of the report, Salesforce Research, a cloud computing company,  surveyed 500 small business owners representing companies with less than 200 employees. The study found that small businesses automating their processes are 1.6-times more likely to be growing than those that donât. Similarly, growing small businesses were found to be twice as likely to adopt artificial intelligence as stagnant businesses.
This report demonstrates that while automation is often heralded as a destroyer of small businesses, it can actually help them succeed. In particular, automation is a beneficial component in helping small businesses scale. Traditionally, small businesses looking to scale would have to invest in people and processes, but automation can help small businesses scale without having to hire more people or invest valuable resources in revamping processes.
Overall, automation can help small businesses digitize their enterprise by taking tasks that were previously done manually, such as customer information management and data analytics, and streamlining them. Here are three areas where automation can improve internal efficiency for small businesses.
Sales and Marketing
According to emailmonday, a marketing consultancy firm, 51 percent of companies are using marketing automation. With new technological innovations in marketing, small businesses can automate repetitive tasks, allowing them to reach a wider audience and increase sales. Marketing automation software allows small businesses to reach customers on multiple channels, including email, social media and websites. It can help small businesses generate new leads and allow them to act on leads more easily. Automation can also help small businesses more easily access information on how potential customers react to their marketing efforts. This can help small businesses adapt their marketing campaigns to better entice potential customers and convert these leads to sales.
Finance and Accounting
According to a recent report by software company Xero, 72 percent of small businesses continue to rely on human accountants despite advancements in automated accounting technology. But automation in the finance and accounting sectors is growing exponentially and for small businesses in particular, automating these processes can free up resources.  Recently there have been a number of technological advancements in payment processing. These new softwares speed up processing times and reduce costs. They also eliminate the need for manual accounting as payments are tracked automatically.
Human Resources
Automation can be utilized by human resource departments to streamline the talent acquisition process. According to a recent report by Ideal, a recruitment automation company, the processes human resources officers would most like to see automated are interview scheduling, background and reference checking, analytics/measurement, and sourcing candidates.  New software programs have been created to handle inbound talent searches. And new tech like chatbots and artificial intelligence is even being used to interact with candidates. Artificial intelligence alone is currently being used in job postings, sourcing, candidate rediscovery and resume screening. Companies are utilizing this technology to conduct interviews and evaluate candidate behavior. Automation can also help throughout the hiring process with applicant tracking.
By automating different sectors of their operations, small businesses can increase efficiency and focus valuable resources in other areas that allow them to grow and thrive.

The Future of Saas Marketing: What You Need to Expect
Software-as-a-service (SaaS) has been taking the business world by storm. Therefore, youâve been putting yourself in a position to allow the winds to work in your favor.
So far, your product or service is a winning one. Itâs all smooth sailing from here, right?
Well, only if you keep up with the trends in this constantly growing and changing area.
Research shows that the SaaS market was valued at $5.56 billion back in 2008. But its value is expected to reach $132.57 billion in 2020.
Of course, itâs hard to predict exactly what path the SaaS industry may take next. After all, this is all unchartered territory.
However, hereâs a rundown on what you can expect from the future of SaaS marketing.
Letâs jump in!
Going Beyond Vertical or Horizontal SaaS
How exactly are you positioning your particular software solution in todayâs market? This will ultimately affect how successful your SaaS solution is.
Letâs take a look at three types of SaaS you need to know about.
First, thereâs vertical SaaS. This refers to software solutions that cater to specific industries. Examples of these industries include legal, finance and health care.
Then, thereâs horizontal SaaS. This is software that is industry neutral and that caters to general business needs.
These needs include, for example, sales, marketing and accounting in a variety of fields.
During the past few years, the vertical form of SaaS has grown exponentially more than horizontal models have.
However, thereâs now a new kid on the block: On-top SaaS.
On-top SaaS is industry-neutral or targeted software that integrates with existing solutions or several solutions.
If you create this type of software, you can essentially enhance a currently popular product.
That means you can gain immediate access to the receptive customer base and audience members who are using the product.
Take Zapier, for example. This solution works with the likes of Slack, Salesforce and Xero.
Zapier can connect hundreds of applications, thus allowing them to communicate with one another. It essentially fits âon topâ of other solutions.
What makes on-top SaaS so unique is that it can be classified as both vertical and horizontal, too.
In the pioneering SaaS industry, there isnât a lot of room for solutions that are 100% original anymore. So your best bet is to focus on solutions that complement what is already existing.
Thatâs a sure way to continue to thrive in this competitive, vibrant industry.
The Role of Artificial Intelligence
Machine learning and artificial intelligence are two trends that will no doubt cause SaaS marketing to turn a corner in the years ahead.
Weâre in the middle of an unprecedented marketing revolution. Automated and intelligent technology are infiltrating nearly all aspects of modern life.
An obvious example of this on the SaaS front is Amazon Web Services, or AWS.
With AWS, Amazonâs goal is to reduce the costs and thus remove the barriers to artificial intelligence and machine learning. In this way, businesses both big and small can capitalize on these advanced solutions.
Hereâs why SaaS, machine learning, and artificial intelligence work so well together.
The fundamental ingredient of SaaS is data. Both machine learning and artificial intelligence enable automated ways of operating via the processing of these data on a large scale.
Here are some potential applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence for advanced SaaS marketing:
Predictive analytics
Pricing packages that are dynamic
Solutions that work without the need for manual input
Hands-off A/B testing
Drop-off alerts plus triggers, aimed at reducing churn (where subscribers or customers quit doing business with your company)
Assistants and chatbots, which eliminate the need for a lengthy sign-up form
Hyper-personalization (both offsite and onsite)
Without a doubt, these technologies, which are all-encompassing, will fuel SaaS marketingâs future.
The Marketing of Product Features
The whole point of SaaS marketing is to, of course, sell a product effectively. However, a new trend is to sell products indirectly rather than directly.
So, what exactly does this involve? It involves creating stand-alone or surrounding features.
Earlier, we talked about horizontal SaaS. In many situations, horizontal SaaS products become extremely large.
This happens because research and development teams coupled with product teams constantly add more features, widgets, layers, and tools.
Understandably, this may make you as a marketer feel more overwhelmed than ever before.
But it shouldnât.
The truth is, the more features youâre given, itâs like having a lot more marketing content at your fingertips.
It actually makes your job easier, as additional features help you to more effectively engage and inform your target audience.
Feature marketing is akin to side product marketing. This form of marketing is where companies produce parallel products that offer added value to the audience but are actually separate from their main products.
At a company that executes feature marketing well, the launch of a feature can feel like the launch of a brand-new product.
In addition, you can blow the competition out of the water by creating nurturing, robust side funnels.
For instance, a customer could sign up for your feature offering from your feature landing page and therefore start to receive emails about the feature. However, the customer would eventually be introduced to your companyâs main product, despite the fact that his or her entry point to the company was the feature release.
Another approach you could take is to have many landing pages that contain a number of videos, explanations, animations, GIFs and even micro-interactions.
These features have a couple of common goals: to nurture current users, and to engage new visitors and ultimately convert them to customers.
Detailed Customer Profiling
In SaaS marketing today, the ultimate aim is to achieve one-on-one communication with your audience.
In other words, you donât have time for second guessing. Thereâs no time for plowing ahead with an unsystematic ad campaign that focuses on hard selling.
Instead, you need to carefully craft messages that are relevant to each individual potential customer.
An important step in this process is to develop what are called ideal customer profiles. Your sales and marketing strategies need to align with these profiles.
Of course, to create accurate profiles, you need to collect customer and visitor data.
The more data-driven your one-on-one SaaS marketing communication is, the more youâll reduce churn and increase your average contract value, upsells and cross-sells.
Youâll also experience quicker time-to-conversion after freemium or free trial usage.
We mentioned Amazon earlier when discussing the companyâs AWS, but Amazon is worth another mention here simply because the company has mastered the science of customer profiling.
Amazonâs unparalleled philosophy is to know its customers as it would close friends, and it does it like no other company can in the current age of hyper-personalization.
With the right data and technology, you can follow in Amazonâs footsteps by marketing your SaaS solution to your target customers in the most personal way possible.
An Emphasis on Targeted Conversation
Another hallmark of SaaS marketing in the future? Targeted customer conversation.
Targeted conversation will make your SaaS brand look trendy, but itâll also help you to generate leads and onboard customers faster and more accurately around the clock.
Here, weâre not talking about your traditional lead forms or those pop-ups that annoy individual visitors. Weâre talking about implementing interactive chatbots and live chats that predict and analyze visitorsâ behavior.
These tools engage with customers at the right moments and provide relevant content in the same way that a human customer service representative would.
The âhumanâ conversation that they facilitate is part of what makes them so popular.
The other reason for their popularity is that they meet customersâ growing desire for immediacy; they quickly satisfy needs, qualify leads and drive conversions.
And the best part? They are much more efficient than human beings are, with the proper training and setup.
This is critical considering that you ideally want to respond to leads in no more than five minutes. After this, youâll drastically decrease your chances of qualifying them.
In addition, itâs not enough to simply have a chatbot ready to take customer inquiries when they come. You need one that will be proactive instead of reactive â something you can trigger them to do.
These conversational commerce tools will only become more advanced as artificial intelligence becomes even more sophisticated.
The Demand for Thought Leadership
If youâre an expert in your industry, you will quickly soar to the front in the race for leads.
For this reason, generating educational, innovative content will remain foundational to inbound SaaS marketing down the road.
The more you produce content that is thought leading, the more credible youâll appear, and therefore, the more youâll be recognized for your SaaS offerings.
If you want to take things a step further, donât just paint yourself as an expert who has always had it all together.
Instead, be vulnerable and transparent to your audience by sharing with them your experiences in your SaaS journey â both the positive and the negative ones.
If you focus on being extraordinarily visible, your audience will immediately view you as a fellow human being rather than a faceless corporation.
And thatâs paramount because humans purchase from other âhumans,â not companies.
A Fresh Focus on Customer Success
In the SaaS space, stellar customer service will continue to drive the strategies and approaches of leading companies.
Being focused on the customer is an extremely attractive trait to customers. So the more customer friendly you are, the more likely youâll see your revenue increase.
Thatâs because when you make customers feel important, theyâll want to buy from you and then tell others about you, thus bringing more business your way.
The need to ramp up your customer service will only grow as competition in the SaaS industry becomes fiercer.
When we talk about customer service, weâre talking about more than simply having a strong support team in place. Weâre referring to baking a customer-centric approach into your organizationâs overall culture and making sure that it touches all aspects of customersâ journeys with you.
Remember that customers are continuously bombarded with options. Therefore, if you donât provide them with the SaaS value they expect, theyâll simply go to someone who can.
Hereâs what you can do in practical terms: Gather immediate feedback about the value that your customers are getting from your product.
If you notice a major increase or drop in customer satisfaction, try to find out as soon as possible what happened.
This will allow you to discover issues â perhaps some that your customers might not even be aware of yet â and address them in a timely manner.
Itâll also allow you to respond to your good outcomes so that you maximize your potential.
So, focus on what your customer finds valuable (having his or her need met). Donât just focus on what you find valuable (making a profit).
The more you do this, the more your customer will take care of the latter.

How artificial intelligence helps small businesses
The evolution of artificial intelligence has led to the opening of unmanned convenience stores and self-service bank branches in China.
But AI also helps small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that work with lower budgets, which account for 97% of New Zealand businesses.
âLarge companies can afford to invest in technology to maximize their efficiency, but SMEs can not use much in the market,â says Brendan Roberts, founder and CEO of Aider.
Robertsâ Artificial Intelligence software company has developed a digital assistant, Aider, that works alongside existing digital applications from a small business.
Westpac announced a partnership with Aider and offers its SME customers a free trial of three months.
âFor example, if the SME leverages its accounting via Xero, uses Google Analytics, a point-of-sale system such as Kounta, and a list management tool such as Deputy, Aider integrates the software and reports it by conversational interaction,â Roberts said.
âPeople who work and run SMEs have so many hats to wear and this type of automation saves time. You can talk to Help via a voice assistant like Amazonâs Alexa or converse by text with it to view your data. You can ask Helping what your total expenses were last week or what were your best-selling products of the day, âhe added.
Founder and CEO of Helping, Brendan Roberts
WORLD, one of Westpacâs SME customers, has been using Helping for two months to improve the efficiency of its fashion stores.
âWe can see which stores or staff members are the busiest, which affects our membership,â said WORLD co-founder Benny Castles.
âHelp will also tell me straight away:â This product sells well today âorâ you should order more from this stock â, which means I do not have to spend three hours writing my own reports and consult data. â
âAs part of a small business, you can also be emotionally attached to your products. I had designed a dress that I felt very attached to, but after selling it on Instagram and selling it in stores, it just was not sold as well as others. Help was able to look at sales figures without emotion, tell us that he was not selling well and taking action in this regard, âadded Castles.
Unlike Siri and other chatbots, who only respond to requests, Help proactively indicates what needs to be reviewed after analyzing the companyâs data.
âWe use our algorithms to look for patterns and changes, then Help will say,â Hey, you usually sell that amount and now youâve lost this month, maybe you should look at that âorâ hey, your feed Net cash is low, you should watch this, âsays Roberts.
You can use Help to easily review your earnings and understand how you can do more. It helps you monitor your inventory and inventory to manage margins and people costs. Since its launch in late 2018, it has been very popular with hotels and retail businesses in Australasia.
Lewis Billinghurst, head of Westpac NZâs Digital Ventures, acknowledges that the AI ââis of great value to SMEs in an easy-to-use format.
âWe have recommended Helping our small business customers in Westpac and offer them a free three-month trial because itâs a very effective tool to help small businesses grow,â said Billinghurst.
While Aid helps SMEs, other AI programs are helping New Zealandâs banking sector fight against fraud.
Alex Ferguson, senior intelligence officer for Westpac New Zealand, said the bank used AI primarily to detect credit card fraud.
âIf a customer spends $ 40,000 on sneakers at four in the morning, the artificial intelligence will check his spending habits to see if itâs his normal behavior, which probably would not be the case in this case.
âWe have proactive risk management programs in place for AI to detect certain types of suspicious behavior. This type of artificial intelligence has a much higher accuracy rate than a human because of the speed of data processing, âsaid Ferguson.
