Ladies and gentlemen, I want you to give a big welcome to the star of the evening, the main attraction, the one and only stand-up philosopher, the inimitable Monsieur… le Docteur… le Professeur… Émil Flostre! Give him a big hand!
[Flostre enters to enthusiastic applause. He is a tall rangy man, dressed all in black, sporting a beatnik-style beard around the edge of his jaw. He speaks with a barely perceptible French accent.]
FLOSTRE: Merci. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for your welcome. It's great to be here in the universe tonight. I hope you all think so too. [He perches on the edge of the stool in the centre of the stage.] As it's a new year, we have a special show for you tonight. Later on, there will be dancing girls. Before that, I've brought some very special guests with me, to help the show along.
A MUFFLED VOICE OFF-STAGE: Now?
FLOSTRE: [To side] No, not yet. I'll tell you when.
I'm here to talk about la philosophie – philosophy. Qu'est-ce que vous dîtes? You don't think that will be very entertaining? Well, I'll tell you, actually, philosophy has always been très amusante, even from the start in ancient Greece, about 2500 years ago, when a man called Thales had the first philosophical insight. Thales determined that everything is made out of water. It wasn't a great start, but it got him a few laughs.
Only fifty years later Pythagoras proclaimed that everything is made out of numbers. So you see, there was progress, even if nobody knows what he meant. Physics is a lot like that nowadays. Plus ça change, hein?.
But these ancient Greeks, they weren't satisfied for long. Another thirty years and Xenophones decided that everything was made of earth and water. And at more or less the same time, Heraclitus declared that the entire world was an everlasting fire.
THE MUFFLED VOICE OFF-STAGE: Get on with it. I'm waiting. Those guys weren't even philosophers. They just made stuff up. If you'd cut them out we could bring on the dancing girls.
FLOSTRE: Pay no attention to him. C'est un idiot.. After another sixty years of thinking, Empedocles thought about what Thales, Pythagoras, Xenophones and Heraclitus had said, and stated that there was much to be said in favour of each of their theories. So Empedocles proposed a new synthesis: everything was made out of [drum roll] earth, fire, air and water [cymbal crash]. And so that made everybody happy… except Pythagoras.

"I am going to put a stop to your fornication with the sea. She belongs to me."
-- Spartan general Callicratidas to general Conon of Athens for various reasons but none that justify this phrasing.

xenophon and socrates, sometime early on
there’s some back and forth about the identification on whether or not that one guy in raphael’s school of athens is aeschines or xenophon (there’s a lot of back and forth on a lot of things wrt to that painting), but I’ve decided to read it as xenophon because garrigues’ notes on identifying everyone in that painting annoys me 💕
⭐ places I’m at! bsky / pixiv / pillowfort /cohost / cara.app / tip jar!
#drawing tag#I am in fact a hater altho I usually complain more offline. however garrigues’ text pissed me off so much I had to mention it#usually I refer to that specific figure (xenophon/aeschines) as ‘that twink’ but unfortunately for me I got a little obsessed with xenophon#so now I care about things like this. the typical meaning of anabasis vs that of katabasis is so funny to me because technically they are antonyms but katabasis is usually used for a hero's harrowing journey to the underworld in which he experiences a metaphorical death and rebirth while anabasis is just. a march
#tagamemnon#aeneas's trip to the underworld which defines the second half of the aeneid vs xenophon's work on the march to persia#queueusque tandem abutere catilina patientia nostra

[ LEMNISCUS GUIDE BLOG!!! ]
☆Reading until end of blog will be much appreciated!!! (Psst, theres a discord server link i slipped in btw....)
Picture below isnt accurate with tumblr bc this was made for instagram post.
You may be wondering... "What is Lemniscus? Why do you keep mentioning it in your posts?"
TO BEGIN WITH, Lemniscus is one of the planets in this universe with Ribbaniuns the living beings in it! The population of Lemniscus consist the various anthropomorphic animals.
And thats where we begin sharing the story and contents of these characters by the name LEMNISCUS! You could say Lemniscus is a series/project my friends and i worked on together!!! (We took Lemniscus bc we literally only focus on this planet... No else.)
#Lemniscus -> tag used for Lemniscus related posts :3
SEE ALSO: Lemniscus Timeline
Lemniscus doesnt have a main plot honestly. We are just putting in characters in Lemniscus and let them live their life💥
Ah... So then, "Who are the characters? Why do they look like the characters from Sonic series?"
THIS. is a good one to explain and i reallly want you guys to keep in mind with this!!!!
Yes! The Lemniscus cast does look like the characters from Sonic the hedgehog because they do take the design and traits inspiration from them! BUT! The personality, backstories, interractions, lores, all of those... We worked and develop on it ourselves!!! (Theres similiarities still, but its only SLIGHT!!! Theres some differences when compared)
Thats why this is NOT counted as Sonic au, instead, its their own universe and story! The Lemniscus cast are original characters/ocs based on existing character that later we develop so they wont look EXACTLY like the existing char they took inspiration of!
I could say that this universe's origins of making is basically 'based on Sonic'. Throughout time, there are improvisasion little by little as we worked on building chars and stories, making it their own thing :D!! So, again, Lemniscus and Sonic are two different thing... I appreciate yall's understanding. I dont want any miscommunication between Lemniscus and Sonic franchise! <"3
The original characters belong to their respective owners <3 (Keep in mind we are 4 person putting our characters in ONE and worked together in this)
Alright!!! Now INTRODUCE THE CAST/CHARACTERS!
As in the main characters! Here ill list out the characters name with their profile links AND respective owners too! Get to know each of them by clicking their names:
Hz Railstar, Alora Quinn, Victoria Opal, Ezra (JULIE/HANA!!! ME!!! :D HOIHOI!!! I link you guys to my chars' masterpost in tumblr hehe,,, its more detailed!!!)
Gausberto, Nova, Puffin, Xenophone (Hani! NOTE: She doesnt put much infos of her characters, i'll most likely be the one to share the infos through source from her she is my own sister after all Infos about Hani's chars are most likely in the discord server!)
Aero and Noire ( @m3tr0n0m333 )
Rambutan Stoneheart ( @cherriosblog )
.
OH!!! But thats not it!! Theres more infos i'd like to share....
Slowly but surely, we noticed our Lemniscus contents dragged people to start being curious about it, even interested with the series/project we worked! Of course, with a warm welcome, we opened a discord server, ☆LEMNISCUS (Hz Universe), for the little community we have :D!!!
The server is a great place for you to learn more about the characters (bc again, SOME of the Lemniscus cast here are explained alot more in the discord server instead!) and LORESSS obviously! Its even easier and you can keep on track whenever new things are shared by us :)
The characters arent only the ones shown here... In fact, there are more than you think. Yes! Im talkin bout the side characters! Theyre mostly explained and digged alot more in the server soo....
Hop in and join to get more familliar of Lemniscus!! ☆
.
This must conclude the blog. Thank you everyone for the consideration and supports of this little project we worked on! <3 I, the one to start all this fun chaotic universe is very grateful that i'd make it this far by sharing contents of these silli cast, not only me, but by you dedicated supporters and friends that worked alongside me ☆
Live, laugh, burn Hertz!🔥🔥🔥🔥

For my master's degree, I've been learning Ancient Greek and during this quarter we're reading Xenophon's Anabasis. It's a lesser known piece of ancient literature. Basically its about this guy Cyrus gathering up an army to challenge his brother Artaxerxes for the throne but losing. Its got gossip and fighting and lots of petty stuff. Super fun and I have been joking it could be a musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
So I start to wonder if there ever have been any cool adaptations of Xenophon's Anabasis and when I look on Wikipedia I learn that in 1965, author Sol Yurick adapted Xenophon's Anabasis into a book called Warriors which reimagines the story to be about New York City street gangs. In 1979, the book was adapted into a film by Walter Hill.
On October 18, 2024 (one week from tomorrow), Lin-Manuel Miranda will be releasing a concept album with Elisa Davis which is based on that movie.
I just want to say that I called it. Nobody has ever called anything this hard in the history of calling it.

Greek horses were smaller (by perhaps some two hands on average than the average cavalry charger early this century), stockier, more cob-like than those we are used to seeing or riding. Stallions were not gelded, which did nothing to assuage their tendency – shared by the mares – to bite. Nor did the rider operate with such seemingly indispensable modern aids to balance and control as stirrups and saddle. The horses for their part went unshod. The nature of the beast meant that the horse was a hugely expensive commodity; the price most commonly paid for a horse in the fourth century was up to three hundred times the average daily wage of a skilled worker. The expense was especially magnified by a climate and terrain generally lacking in extensive lush pastureland. Only the seriously rich could hope to maintain a horse, let alone a stable or stud, and the horse correspondingly functioned as an obvious status symbol marking out the elite and often aristocratic few. It followed that even fewer Greeks could afford to own let alone breed racehorses – hence the quite prodigious extravagance implied by Alcibiades’ boasting that he had entered no less than seven teams of four-horse chariots at the Olympics of (probably) 416: this was the ‘blue-riband’ event of the Games (cf. Hiero 11.5), and Alcibiades not only won the first prize but had four of his teams in the first seven finishers. Small wonder that he commissioned Euripides to write a commemorative and celebratory ode, besides exploiting his triumph shamelessly for political purposes. The young Xenophon must surely have been hugely impressed.
Paul Cartledge in the introduction to Xenophon's (possibly?) On Horsemanship.
#ALCIBIADES MENTIONED. god the idea of young xenophon and alcibiades interacting is for some reason stupidly funny. in part because xenophon#was extremely devout. or wanted to be perceived that way#horses#ANYWAY im just sharing this because i want to force myself to read a bit before sleeping at least#and this is a way to motivate myself

Some Pet Dog Names from Ancient Greece
When the hound has caught the hare, or been otherwise victorious in the course, you should […] pat him with your hand and praise him, kissing his head, and stroking his ears, and speaking to him by name […] for, like men of generous spirit, they love to be praised; and the dog, if not quite tired out [from the hunt] will come up with joy to caress you. (Arrian, On Coursing, XVIII Pg 116 trans. William Dansey)
As many dogs were hunting hounds or guard dogs in Ancient Greece, it followed that the naming convention was dependant on psychology; to name the dog something strong or skilful was to boast of the animals’ superiority to others of its breed, just as it reflected on the owner. There are some well known dogs in Ancient Greek history that many are aware of, namely Cerberus, Odysseus’ faithful dog Argos, and Alexander the Great named a city after his dog Peritas. We are lucky to have two lists of excellent dog names from authors Xenophon and Ovid.
From Xenophon (~ 430 - 355 BC), in his treaties on Hunting, we have the below list:
Give the hounds short names, so as to be able to call to them easily. The following are the right sort: Psyche, Thymus, Porpax, Styrax, Lonchê (Lance), Lochus, Phrura, Phylax (Sentinel/Guardian), Taxis, Xiphon, Phonax, Phlegon, Alcê (Stout), Teuchon, Hyleus, Medas (Crafty), Porthon, Sperchon (Bustler/Hasty), Orgê, Bremon, Hybris, Thallon (Vigorous), Rhomê, Antheus (Blossom), Hebe, Getheus, Chara (Jolly/Ecstasy), Leusson, Augo (Bright), Polys, Bia, Stichon, Spudê, Bryas, Oenas (Blueskin), Sterrus, Craugê, Caenon, Tyrbas, Sthenon, Aether, Actis, Aechmê, Noes (Counsellor), Gnomê, Stibon, Hormê (Impetus). (Xenophon Kynegetikos On Hunting 7.5)
A kind person on Reddit suggested these names could also translate as:
Psyche = Psyche / Spirit
Thymus = Pluck
Porpax = Buckler
Styrax = Spigot
Lonche = Lance
Lochus = Lurcher
Phrura = Watch
Phylax = Keeper
Taxis = Brigade
Xiphon = Fencer
Phonax = Butcher
Phlegon = Blazer
Alce = Prowess
Teuchon = Craftsman
Hyleus = Foster
Medas = Counsellor
Porthon = Spoiler
Sperchon = Hurry
Orge = Fury
Bremon = Growler
Hybris = Riot / Insolence
Thallon = Bloomer
Rhome = Rome / Mighty
Antheus = Blossom
Hebe = Hebe / Youth (Young’n)
Getheus = Hilary / Happy
Chara = Jollity
Leusson = Glazer
Augo = Eyesbright
Polys = Much
Bia = Force
Stichon = Trooper
Spude = Bustle
Bryas = Bubbler
Oenas = Rockdove
Sterrus = Stubborn
Crauge = Yelp
Caenon = Killer
Tyrbas = Strongboy / Riot
Sthenon = Sky
Aether = Sunbeam
Actis = Bodkin
Aechme = Wistful
Noes = Gnome
And from Ovid (~ 43 BC - 17 AD), in his Metamorphosis, of the dogs that attacked their master Actaeon, we have:
First ‘Black-foot’, Melampus, and keen-scented Ichnobates, ‘Tracker’, signal him with baying, Ichnobates out of Crete, Melampus, Sparta. Then others rush at him swift as the wind, ‘Greedy’, Pamphagus, Dorceus, ‘Gazelle’, Oribasos, ‘Mountaineer’, all out of Arcadia: powerful ‘Deerslayer’, Nebrophonos, savage Theron, ‘Whirlwind’, and Laelape, ‘Hunter’. Then swift-footed Pterelas, ‘Wings’, and trail-scenting Agre, ‘Chaser’, fierce Hylaeus, ‘Woody’, lately gored by a boar, the wolf-born Nape, ‘Valley’, Poemenis, the trusty ‘Shepherd’, and Harpyia, ‘Snatcher’, with her two pups. There is thin-flanked Sicyonian Ladon, ‘Catcher’, Dromas, ‘Runner’, ‘Grinder’, Canache, Sticte ‘Spot’, Tigris ‘Tigress’, Alce, ‘Strong’, and white-haired Leucon, ‘Whitey’, and black-haired Asbolus, ‘Soot’. Lacon, ‘Spartan’, follows them, a dog well known for his strength, and strong-running Aëllo, ‘Storm’. Then Thoos, ‘Swift’, and speedy Lycisce, ‘Wolf’, with her brother Cyprius ‘Cyprian’. Next ‘Grasper’, Harpalos, with a distinguishing mark of white, in the centre of his black forehead, ‘Black’, Melaneus, and Lachne, ‘Shaggy’, with hairy pelt, Labros, ‘Fury’, and Argiodus, ‘White-tooth’, born of a Cretan sire and Spartan dam, keen-voiced Hylactor, ‘Barker’ […] First ‘Black-hair’, Melanchaetes, wounds his back, then ‘Killer’, Theridamas, and Oresitrophos, the ‘Climber’, clings to his shoulder. (Ovid Metamorphoses III 206-233 trans. A S Kline)
Theoi has Brookes More’s translation which offers a few English variations on the names.
A few fun ideas to keep in mind if looking to name a new pet in Ancient Greek style.
For I have myself bred up a hound whose eyes are the greyest of grey; a swift, hard-working, courageous, sound-footed dog[…]. He is most gentle, and kindly-affectioned […] as soon as he catches sight of me, showing symptoms of joy, and again trotting on before me. […] He is the constant companion of whichever may be sick; and if he has not seen either of us for only a short time, he jumps up repeatedly by way of salutation, and barks with joy as a greeting. (Arrian, On Coursing, V Pg 78-80 trans. William Dansey)
